University of West Georgia professor charged with murder in 18-year-old’s death

A now-fired professor at the University of West Georgia has been accused of fatally shooting an 18-year-old woman, officials said.

Richard Sigman, 47, was arrested and charged with murder shortly after Anne Jones, 18, died after being shot in a parking deck in Carrollton, Georgia on Saturday, the Carrollton Police Department said.

Police said the officers were initially called to the Tanner Medical Center in Carrollton at around 12:30 am over reports of a woman who had been shot.

Jones was pronounced dead at the medical center and Sigman was arrested and charged with murder, three counts of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of crime, police said.

Callers told police that the incident unfolded off Adamson Square in a courthouse parking deck after Sigman got into a verbal altercation with another man at Leopoldo’s, a popular pizzeria in the square.

Police said the other man was alleged to have told at least one security guard that Sigman had threatened to shoot him. When security approached Sigman, they saw that he had a weapon and ordered him to leave.

Sigman left and began walking to the parking deck, where he began shooting into a parked vehicle, striking Jones, police said.

“Friends immediately drove her to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead,” police said.

In a statement provided to WXIA, an NBC affiliate based in Atlanta, a spokesperson for the University of West Georgia said Sigman was fired on Saturday.

“On behalf of the university, we wish to convey our deepest condolences to Anna’s family and many friends,” said Dr. Brendan Kelly, UWG’s president, in a statement shared with WXIA.

“We know this news is difficult to process and affects many members of our university community. We ask that you keep Anna’s family, friends, and all who have been touched by this tragedy in your thoughts during this tremendously difficult time,” the statement said.

The university did not immediately respond to a request for comment from NBC News. A webpage listing the school’s faculty with the Department of Management in the Richards College of Business had as recently as last month named “Rick Sigman” as a lecturer at the school. His profile of him has since been removed from the page.

According to WXIA, Jones had been enrolled to attend UWG in the fall, but police said she was not one of Sigman’s students, according to the outlet.

The teen had recently graduated from Mount Zion High School, according to a statement posted on social media by school leaders.

“Anna loved this school and this community and she will be missed dearly by many,” the statement said, sharing a link to a GoFundMe page set up to help cover funeral costs. As of early Monday, more than $17,800 had been raised.

Disney’s New Free-To-Play Racer Wants To Be Distinct From Mario Kart With “Combat Racing”

Disney Speedstorm Mickey Mouse
Image: Gameloft

Gameloft’s free-to-play racing game Disney Speedstorm has already been compared to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe numerous times. With its character-focused racing and themed tracks, it was inevitable — especially on the Switch! But, in an interview with Nintendo Everything, the developer is keen to set out what makes this title stand out from Nintendo’s juggernaut kart racer.

While Mario Kart 8 has different types of karts, stats, and even racer weights, Disney Speedstorm will have four different classes. When asked about what makes this game “stand out”, Gameloft Barcelona’s game manager — Aska Suzuki — put forward this unique element first:

“In Disney Speedstorm, characters aren’t just broken up by general types. We’ve given them one of four classes: Speedster, Brawler, Trickster, and Defender to support the strong combat racing element to this game. Boost management is really important , and each class builds extra boost in different ways, such as a brawler gaining more boost through stunning other racers, or a speedster gaining extra boost by going across boost pads. This provides the opportunity for very strategic racing if players wish to race that way .”

The class doesn’t just change how the character races, but it also affects how you get extra boosts, which adds an extra layer of strategy to the game! It sounds like a really interesting difference, especially with the focus on “combat” and confrontation. So we’ll be racing against all of our least-favorite Disney characters so we can justify ramming into them on the race track, then!

But that’s not the only unique element. Suzuki went on to explain what other differences classes bring to the table:

“Additionally, individual characters don’t just have special abilities, but they are pre-loaded with specific power-ups, so a trickster character will be more inclined to get items that negatively impact other racers, or a defender might get more defensive items On top of that, each power-up can be charged in order to perform a different action! More than any other racing game I can think of, character choice in Disney Speedstorm is closer to picking a character in a MOBA game.”

This element of the game is similar to Mario Kart Double Dash!!, but instead of just having unique abilities, they’re also more likely to get items that fit their playstyles. What items and skills these are, we don’t know yet, but it looks like character selection will be going beyond simply picking your favorite Disney and Pixar character.

Of course, Disney Speedstorm is a live service game with seasonal content, and Suzuki outlined a few things that will be added to the game once it’s out:

“…players will have access to regular new content via updates and season passes. New Disney and Pixar racers will be added regularly to Disney Speedstorm, bringing special skills for you to master (or overcome) and unique tracks to pump fresh strategy into the mix. Support crew characters, environments, customization options, and collectibles will also drop in regularly, so there’s always more to experience.”

This is certainly something that sets the game apart from Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which many might be worried about. However, despite there being special events and Season Passes, Suzuki reiterated that “all characters can be unlocked through gameplay”, while also finding items to help level up their chosen character.

There will be specific events focused on a single Disney or Pixar film, or other ones focused on certain characters. So Gameloft is planning to go all out on the game.

Disney Speedstorm is due out sometime this summer. We’ll let you know as soon as we have an official release date. Have you decided on whether you’ll be downloading the game? Do you think the combat racing elements will make this one stand out? Let us know down below!

Beauty and the Geek Australia 2022: Four more Geek makeovers

Beauty and the Geek’s four remaining ‘Geeks’ underwent their makeovers during Monday’s episode of the reality series – and one got an instant tick of approval from his ‘Beauty’, who leapt into his arms for a lingering kiss.

Check out the impressive makeovers below…

Jason

Victorian muso Jason, 29, had perhaps the night’s biggest transformation, losing his shaggy hair and beard – and stepping out with a discernible new air of confidence and even a few male-model poses.

He said he’d changed a lot since the show started, explaining that on his first day, he could “barely muster standing within 20m of the Beauties.”

Jason came out to wild reactions from the rest of the contestants, one of whom summed up the mood by saying: “Who the hell IS that?”

The Beauty he’d been paired with, Emily, could not stop screaming.

“When I saw myself in the mirror, I didn’t recognize myself. I saw someone new…almost like a long-lost brother or something. It was really wild to see myself like that,” Jason said.

“I feel like a weight has been lifted off me. Something as simple as not having beard hair to fiddle with or hair on my face to block my view of things is tremendously powerful for my confidence.”

Aaron

NSW train driver Aaron said he had come “so, so far” on the show, listing a few of his “firsts”.

“I’ve conquered my fear of dogs, jumped off a train through a firewall, posed with my shirt off and grown so much. I’ve changed so much through this experience,” he said.

Emerging post-makeover with a new haircut and outfit, Aaron said he felt “so, so happy… I’m ready to start living now.”

His Beauty Karly was full of praise, dubbing him her “sexy Aaron-cini ball.”

anthony

A self-proclaimed Harry Potter superfan, 26-year-old Anthony suffered bullying at high school and had never quite built his self-confidence after that trauma.

So it’s understandable that his makeover was an emotional experience – he shed a tear or two when he first looked at himself in the mirror.

“It was very emotional,” he said. “It was like, ‘why can’t you love yourself? Why can’t you be proud of who you are?’”

Thankfully his Beauty Tegan was there to be his biggest cheerleader, dubbing the new-look Anthony “a bad boy rich sugar daddy.”

Michael

Fans who’ve been watching this season will know that 25-year-old children’s party entertainer Michael has already developed quite the connection with his Beauty, Tara.

Even so, it was a shock when the new-look Michael stepped out – and an overwhelmed Tara immediately ran into his arms to give him a long, lingering kiss on the lips.

For Michael, it was the dream outcome.

“That was so romantic. I have dreamt of a moment like that. I really felt, really happy… very wanted. I didn’t know she could move that fast in heels!” he said.

Tara couldn’t hide her excitement at the new-look Michael.

“Obviously I fell for you before (the makeover) but this is a cherry on top – I’m not complaining,” she said.

“A sexy bonus?” asked host Sophie Monk.

“I’m glad to be your sexy bonus,” said Michael.

After that loved-up moment, it was a bittersweet end to the episode, as Jason and Emily were eliminated from the competition.

The four makeovers came after fellow contestant Christopher underwent his big transformation last week.

Brownlow Medalist calls out “over the top” reaction to Blues’ loss

1988 Brownlow Medalist Gerard Healy believes the reaction to Carlton’s Round 20 loss has been “over the top”.

The Blues lost to Adelaide by 29-points and were comprehensively outplayed by a tougher, harder Crows outfit at Adelaide Oval. Michael Voss’ men had their chance to cement a top eight spot with a win, but will now almost certainly need a triumph in their remaining three games if they are to play finals.

That may be easier said than done, given their opponents, Brisbane, Melbourne and Collingwood, are all ahead of them on the ladder.

However, Healy called on Blues supporters to stop the negativity, saying he’s still “glass three quarters full” on the club.

“Yes, it was a horrible loss by the Blues on the weekend, but the negative reaction to it has been over the top,” he said on sports day.

“It seems Blues fans, or many of them, want to death-march their team to ninth on the ladder, despite being so good for most of the year and doing so with a lot of injuries.

“I reckon the team is entitled to a mulligan and they got it on the weekend, and (they’re also entitled to) a bit more belief from those who have already written them off.

“It’s been a tough journey over the last 10 years for Blues fans and they’re getting used to disappointment too much, but I wouldn’t be writing them off just at the present time.”

The Blues have built a brand based on pressure, but the Crows winning the contested ball count was always going to leave the visitors up against it.

Healy believes the potential reintroduction of midfielder George Hewett will be a big benefit in Round 21 given he’s missed the last two games with back soreness.

The Sydney Hall of Famer also suggested Harry McKay – who’s kicked three goals across the last three weeks – needed to lift, while further labeling the decision to drop Jack Silvagni for the clash a failed experiment.

“The Blues’ best is still very much top end, but to achieve it they have to get back to winning the contest, and to that matter, get George Hewett back in the middle, (who was) sadly missed on the weekend,” Healy continued.

“Get Harry McKay back in form, and Harry needs to start taking more contested marks in one-on-one battles, which currently is running at about 1 in 20. For someone so big, athletic and gifted, that’s nowhere near good enough, but in other ways, it’s an area to get excited about, because he can get much, much better come the finals, in fact over the next few weeks.

“The rucks, well it’s an issue, and you’ll need more than one poor match to determine the outcome, but from what I’ve seen over the year, Silvagni’s impact in the forward line should not be dismissed lightly and I’m sure it hasn’t been Michael Voss and co.

“It was an experiment that didn’t work, it’s probably going to get another run or two, but I reckon Silvgani will play a big role in the final month of the year.

“So much to think about for Michael Voss, but at this stage, it’s still glass three quarters full for me for the Blues, not the totally empty schooner or pot too many Carlton fans appear to be drinking from this weekend.”

Richmond and St Kilda both kept their final chances alive with wins over the weekend, meaning there are still 10 clubs with genuine chances to be there in September.

Flight attendant reveals why they won’t stow passengers’ carry-on bags

A flight attendant has revealed the “real” reason cabin crew won’t stow passengers’ carry-on bags for them – and it’s left many online users fired up.

If you have recently been on a plane and noticed flight attendants don’t offer to place your suitcase or backpack into the overhead locker, there’s a reason.

According to US flight attendant Cierra, none of the crew get paid while passengers are boarding.

“We actually don’t start to get paid until the moment that airplane door shuts and the handbrake gets lifted,” she said in a viral TikTok.

“On top of that, if it’s because you’re having trouble lifting it, you can easily get your packed [luggage] checked at the gate for free.”

Cierra’s clip, which has amassed almost one million views, has left hundreds shocked.

“Think it’s ridiculous that you don’t get paid until the door shuts. Should be as soon as you enter the airport,” one person wrote.

“It’s ridiculous that you don’t get paid until the doors close,” a second person agreed.

Some claimed that with the current global chaos surrounding airports, airlines and lost baggage, they would rather not have their bags checked in, while others didn’t take lightly to Cierra’s clip.

“OK asking for help to lift a bag shouldn’t ruin your day if someone is asking kindly. There’s plenty of people too short to reach the cabins up top,” one person commented.

“So you’re not gonna help someone with a simple thing like their bags because you’re not getting paid? Seems a little messed up – it’s not that big of a deal,” a second person wrote, while a third added: “Last time I went on a plane they announced if you need help putting luggage overhead just ask since it’s just common courtesy to help people.”

While the rules vary for different airlines, some can have policies preventing flight attendants from lifting passengers’ suitcases, according to the travel brand Matador Network.

Flight attendant Jamela Hardwick told Insider why she won’t help passengers with their luggage.

She explained that it not only comes down to pay, but if they get injured while performing the act, they’re not covered.

“We do not get paid until the boarding door is closed,” she said. “If we get hurt while putting that bag in the overhead bin, we do not get to write it off as an on-job injury.”

Kat Kamalani, a flight attendant for more than six years, said while it is “crazy” it is true that it’s not their job to lift luggage into the overhead lockers.

“A tonne of airlines tell (flight attendants) not to do this because there are so many injuries with it, so if we get injured it’s not even covered,” she said in a TikTok. But she said while the flight crew won’t stow the luggage for you, if you ask for help while you put your luggage in the overhead compartment, they will gladly give it.

“Ask the flight attendant to assist you and they will totally help you put it up there.”

AFL news 2022: David Koch unloads over prison bar jumper, Port Adelaide, Collingwood

Port Adelaide president David Koch has gone nuclear after his club was once again denied the opportunity to wear the famous prison bars.

Koch let rip after it was revealed the club’s request to wear the prison bar Guernsey’s for the round 23 showdown against Adelaide had been denied.

Watch every blockbuster AFL match this weekend Live & Ad-Break Free In-Play on Kayo. New to Kayo? Start your free trial now >

The Power were famously denied the chance to wear their black and white stripes in 2021, and warned they could be stripped competition points if they went against the AFL’s wishes.

Instead they produced an act of elite-level trolling in the dressing rooms after the game when the club changed their jumpers to the club’s controversial black and white stripes Guernsey.

The heritage jumper has been at the center of one of football’s most petty feuds and it’s back in the limelight after Koch’s latest spray as he shut down suggestions the club was advised back in March their request would be denied.

“That is the greatest load of rot I’ve ever heard,” Koch said on FIVEaa radio.

“In fact, two weeks ago the Collingwood president Jeff Browne rang me out of the blue and said: ‘Kochie look mate, we’re taking your request really seriously, we understand how important it is to your members, we understand the history of it … I’ve been canvassing opinions both in Melbourne and South Australia and I’m putting it to my board (last week) and I don’t want to get your hopes up, but I’m quietly confident we could have good news for you.’

“So that was just two weeks ago the president of the Collingwood Football Club rang me out of the blue and told me this.”

Koch said they had been taken advantage of by Collingwood as the ugly saga drags over into another season.

“Remember Collingwood have always said: ‘We own black and white in the AFL/VFL. They are our colours’ – as if you can own two colours. Don’t get me started on that,” he said.

“On the weekend, Collingwood VFL played the Southport Sharks in the VFL who are black and white. So why can’t we play in our traditional prison bar guernsey, Showdown in Adelaide, that’s all. Not against Collingwood. Not for the rest of the year. I don’t think it’s unreasonable.

“I can’t help but feel that we’ve been played in this for being nice and a bit mislead by the club and also conversations I’ve had with the president.

“It just shows, dare I say, the pettiness of this which has got completely out of hand. I don’t know whether it’s a case of the big Victorian clubs once again going: ‘Hey, you just keep in your place you interstates, South Australian clubs. We run this competition, you do as we say.’”

Port Adelaide entered the AFL in 1997 with an agreement in place the prison bars could only be worn during heritage round. The league no longer has a dedicated heritage round with clubs holding their own celebrations each year.

“Yes, an agreement was signed when we came into the AFL – that’s 30 years ago. Times have changed and clubs are celebrating their heritage,” Koch said.

“Why can’t we declare a Showdown as celebrating our heritage?

“I’m fuming because we have done the right thing, we’ve just quietly gone about it, and I can’t help feel as though that good nature has been played.

“You look at virtually every AFL club being allowed to play in their heritage guernsey this year … but we’re not allowed to do the same.”

Territory rights bill to attempt to overturn Andrews bill and allow ACT, NT to debate voluntary assisted dying

In recent years, the federal ban has seen the ACT and NT become outliers as states legalized voluntary assisted dying, with NSW the last to do so in May this year. The most recent vote to overturn the ban, in 2018, was narrowly defeated 36 votes to 34. But the composition of the parliament has significantly changed since then.

Payne said she was “optimistic” the different dynamics of the Senate meant it would pass this time.

Coalition NT Senator Jacinta Price is the only federal representative from either territory to indicate she might not support the bill, saying she did not trust the NT Labor government to consult with Indigenous communities when it came to legislating voluntary assisted dying laws.

“I haven’t fully formed my decision,” Price said. “My concern around assisted dying, which would be a decision for the Territory to make obviously, is the way the current [NT] Labor government have conducted themselves. I see them continuing to fail in terms of trying to support the lives of vulnerable Indigenous Australians.”

In Labor’s ranks, opposition is most likely to come from members aligned to the conservative Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association.

Leader of the “shoppies” grouping, Trade Minister Don Farrell and his allies Deborah O’Neill and Helen Polley voted against the repeal attempt in 2018, as did Senator Pat Dodson.

loading

Farrell declined to comment. O’Neill said she would consider the legislation “on its merits” but she stood by her position articulated in the 2018 debate that “assisted suicide cannot … be safely legislated”. Polley and Dodson could not be reached for comment.

The recent federal election has seen the Senate become more progressive.

The Greens’ ranks have swelled to 12 members, from nine, all of whom are expected to back the bill. It will also have the support of independent ACT senator David Pocock – who campaigned on territory rights and defeated Liberal Zed Seselja, a staunch opponent of voluntary euthanasia. On the Coalition side, senior Liberals Simon Birmingham and Marise Payne backed the challenge of the bill in 2018, and are expected to be joined by colleague Andrew Bragg if they adopt the same position this time.

Independent Tasmanian senator Jacqui Lambie, who was not in the Senate for the 2018 vote, has signaled she will back the bill, as has her newly elected colleague Tammy Tyrrell.
