2 found dead as McKinney fire grows in Northern California

In the 20 years they’ve lived in Yreka, Calif., Vina Swenson and her husband have packed up their car and prepared to flee from fire five times — twice in the last two years.

“We haven’t ever had to leave,” Swenson said Sunday, as flames burned less than five miles away. “So the reality probably hasn’t hit me” that this one could swallow up their home.

As of Sunday night, the McKinney fire — the largest yet of this year’s fire season in drought-stricken California — had ripped through 52,498 acres in Klamath National Forest near the California border with Oregon, destroying homes and threatening hundreds more. It was 0% contained.

Authorities announced Monday that two people were found dead inside a car in the fire zone.

“Sunday fire personnel located two deceased individuals inside a vehicle located in a driveway along Doggett Creek Rd, off HWY 96, W of Klamath River, CA. There will be no additional info pending positive identification & notifications to next-of-kin,” the Siskiyou County sheriff said on Twitter.

Swenson, 54, watched as firefighters cut down brush across the street from her home, which sits in a basin surrounded by heavily forested mountains in the Northridge neighborhood, squarely in the town’s evacuation zone. The sun was trying to peer through the smoke, turning her neighborhood an eerie orange.

“It’s reassuring that they’re keeping us safe, but the fact that they’re clearing brush here makes me think they expect the fire to reach here,” Swenson said. She said they’ll leave as soon as they see flames coming over the surrounding mountains.

About 650 firefighters battling the blaze were contending with triple-digit heat and possible thunderstorms that could set off dangerous conditions. A red flag warning was in effect due to searing temperatures, which averaged about 100 degrees on Sunday, officials said.

“The fire becomes more energetic, and the potential for fire spread increases,” said Jonathan Garner, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. “It just becomes a more active fire when temperatures warm up like that.”

Thunderstorms were expected in the afternoon, which he said could cause gusty, erratic winds and lightning, which could ignite new blazes.

That all makes for unpredictable fire behavior. “And that’s dangerous for firefighters,” Garner said.

By Sunday afternoon, forest officials said, there were about 10 other smaller fires burning in Klamath National Forest.

One of the firefighters on the front lines is Tyler Johnson, 21, who checked in with his mother, Diane, on Sunday morning before heading out on a shift.

That’s their routine, she said. At the end of his rest break, he’ll call to say that he’s headed to the command center, then back into the fray.

“It’s just a quick ‘I love you, be safe,’” Diane Johnson said, a hitch in her voice.

The 49-year-old county planner had evacuated to Placerville about four and a half hours away. Her husband de ella, a sheriff’s deputy, stayed behind to help with evacuations in Yreka and ensure that homes are not looted.

Some neighborhoods on the western side of Yreka were ordered to evacuate, though officials said they saw little progression overnight on the fire’s edge closest to the city.

“Definitely Yreka is of concern as is the other populated areas like Fort Jones,” said Caroline Quintanilla, spokesperson for the US Forest Service. “So we’re focusing on protecting people, life and property.”

Officials said firefighters Sunday were prioritizing protecting Fort Jones, Yreka and other communities in the Highway 96 corridor from the blaze, which could burn for weeks. Highway 96 was shut down along the Klamath River, where crews worked overnight to keep homes and buildings from burning, forest officials said in a social media update.

Quintanilla said firefighters were tapping old bulldozer lines from past fires in the region.

“This area gets lots of fires,” Quintanilla said. “But the particular area where the fire is actually burning right now has not burned since the mid-’50s. So that’s part of the concern as well, and part of the complexity, because it hasn’t burned in a long time.”

Jonathan Dixon, 37, who lives on the western edge of Yreka, told The Times his home will probably be among the first to be scorched as the fire continues to spread.

He said he’s fled to the Bay Area, and that he expects his collection of art nouveau antiques, sculptures and other artworks to perish.

“I’m terrified that my house is going to burn down, and I’ve kind of accepted it,” Dixon said.

Dixon, a card dealer and games supervisor at the local casino, tried to put a positive spin on his losses, saying that he was “kind of a hoarder” and that he’s been intending to get rid of things.

“That’s a problem that’s solved, but not in the way I wanted,” he said.

Still, he said the casino might have to close as well, and if that happens he could lose his home and a source of income. He’s been urging other reluctant relatives to leave Yreka as soon as possible and to forgo trying to save their possessions.

“I was telling them don’t worry about packing up, your life’s more important, just get out of there,” Dixon said.

Many residents in this neighborhood around Humbug Road are elderly, Dixon said, and will probably face significant hurdles trying to leave.

Jan Williamson, 66, fled her house in the Northridge neighborhood along with her husband and 40-year-old daughter Leanne, a quadriplegic with cerebral palsy.

Williamson said the evacuation has been especially difficult on Leanne because she is severely autistic and has been agitated as her daily routines of watching TV and listening to music are disrupted. The Williamsons have had to isolate themselves in their motor home because of the heavy smoke in the air.

Trapped and with no ability to speak, Leanne tends to bite herself “hard and often” when she’s frustrated, her mother said.

Jan Williamson and her husband have had to leave behind an array of equipment used to care for their daughter, including an electric lift system that ferries her from the bed to the bathroom.

“Whenever it’s especially bad like this, we just have to take one or two minutes at a time, and just manage to get through each day,” Jan Williamson said.

The Red Cross late Saturday opened a shelter in the town of Weed after closing its location in Yreka when the area was ordered to evacuate, said Stephen Walsh, a spokesman with the organization.

Twenty-two people are staying at the shelter, where they’re being offered beds, food and spiritual care, Walsh said.

“They can stay as long as they need to, and obviously the shelters are open to everybody,” he said.

Siskiyou County officials set up a webpage to help residents find rescued dogs, cats and livestock within the evacuation area. The animals were being cared for at various shelters.

The fire started about 2:38 pm Friday near Highway 96 and McKinney Creek Road southwest of the Klamath River, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. The cause is under investigation.

Made In Abyss: Binary Star Falling Into Darkness File Size Seemingly Revealed

Made In Abyss Screenshot Two Characters
Image: Spike Chunsoft

Next month, the first video game adaptation of the hit anime series Made in Abyss will be hitting the Switch. And thanks to the eShop and Nintendo Everything, we might have a good idea how big a hole you’ll need to dig to make room for the game.

The upcoming RPG from Spike Chunsoft, Made in Abyss: Binary Star Falling into Darkness, will have both a retelling of the anime (with production supervised by the creator Akihito Tsukushi) plus an original story set after main characters Riko and Reg leave for the Abyss .

Luckily, the game doesn’t seem to need much space, with the eShop stating it will take up approximately 5.9GB. That’s a little bigger than Super Mario Odyssey’s 5.5GB, but comparable to other RPGs on the system such as Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch (5.7GB) and Atelier Shallie: Alchemists of the Dusk Sea DX (5.9GB).

So, despite the game being packed with two different modes, this cave isn’t too deep at all! Of course, as with all Switch file sizes pre-release, this is subject to change, but it doesn’t seem like you’ll need to carve out a ton of space for this upcoming game.

We’re sure fans are anticipating the game’s 2nd September release, and we are too. Let us know what you think of the upcoming Made in Abyss action RPG in the comments!

“It is especially not a word that I am ashamed of saying or ashamed of identifying as by any means.”

The issue rose after Siwa told Yahoo! Life she didn’t like using the term to refer to her own sexuality.

In her video, Siwa explains this is simply because she doesn’t like how “lesbian” sounds phonetically, in the same way that some people don’t like the sound of the word “moist.”

“I don’t hate the word lesbian… just whenever somebody talks to me, I just say that I’m gay,” she explains, adding, “It’s not the word that flows off the tongue for me, if that makes feel.”

Celtic vs Aberdeen result, Ange Postecoglou reaction, Jota, Scottish Premiership, updates, latest

Ange Postecoglou called for a more “decisive” Celtic after the Hoops opened their Scottish Premiership title defense with a 2-0 home win against Aberdeen.

In front of 60,000 fans at Parkhead, Celtic made the perfect start when defender Stephen Welsh scored in just the third minute.

However it took until the 75th minute for the Hoops to seal their win via a brilliant goal from Portuguese attacker Jota.

Former Socceroos coach Postecoglou – embarking on his second season in charge of the Glasgow giants and now having a coaching staff that includes Australian great Harry Kewell – wasn’t entirely satisfied with his side’s performance despite the victory.

Postecoglou was especially frustrated with Jota’s lack of cutting edge in the first half.

“There is no doubt the boy has talent and he is determined to be the best footballer he can be,” Postecoglou told Clyde Radio.

“But, he was one of the main culprits in the last 15 minutes of the first half.

“He was wasteful with the ball and he gave away possession when he didn’t have to. These are the kind of things we have to avoid.

“We have to keep these guys on track and not let them get away from the things we want them to do.

“The good thing is he addressed it at halftime and in the second half, not just his goal but his general play was really good.”

It wasn’t just Jota that was wasteful in front of goal, but the entire team too.

“It was a solid performance but we were just wasteful in front of goal,” Postecoglou said.

“I was disappointed because I thought we could have been a lot more clinical.

“Sometimes you can fall into the trap of knowing we will create loads of opportunities and because of that you are not as focused as you should be.

“My view is we are creating opportunities so let’s take as many as we can. “

Socceroos midfielder Aaron Mooy, who joined Celtic less than two weeks ago, was among the substitutes and entered the contest in the final 10 minutes as a replacement for Matt O’Riley.

Why everyone is talking about Florence Pugh and Olivia Wilde.

You may have heard rumors about Olivia Wilde and Florence Pugh feuding, while Harry Styles holds Pugh hostage in an utopian community and whispers ‘Don’t worry, darling’ in her ear, and Ted Lasso serves Wilde custody papers live on stage.

Confusing, huh?

Don’t worry (darling), I’ve got you covered.

Here’s everything you need to know the Olivia Wilde and Florence Pugh feuding rumors and their upcoming movie, Don’t Worry Darling:

Let’s start with the basics. what even is Don’t Worry Darling?

Don’t Worry Darling is an upcoming (sexy) thriller movie directed by Olivia Wilde. It stars Florence Pugh as a 1950s housewife who is living with her husband de ella (Harry Styles) in a utopian experimental community run by the company he works for. Soon she begins to worry that her glamorous company might be hiding some dark secrets.

Think The Stepford Wives but… sexier.

Watch the trailer for Don’t Worry Darling. Post continues below.

OK, this movie sounds brilliant. Why do people think Wilde and Pugh are feuding?

So it all comes back to Harry Styles. Doesn’t everything?

Wilde and Styles met on the set in 2020 and allegedly began having an affair while she was still married to Jason Sudeikis aka Ted Lasso.

According to “sources” and also “insiders” the pair were openly hooking up on set and Pugh was not happy about it.

“I can tell you for a fact that Flo seeing Olivia and Harry all over each other on set did not go down well as Olivia was still with Jason when she first hooked up with Harry,” one insider told The New York Post’s Page Six.

“Jason and the kids visited Olivia on set at the beginning a few times, so I think this all made people feel a little uncomfortable,” the insider added.

Wait… Ted Lasso is involved?

Well, kind of.

Wilde and Sudeikis got engaged in 2012 and they have two kids together – Otis, eight, and Daisy, five.

They separated in November 2020.

Knights coach under pressure, Adam O’Brien, sacked, press conference, Buzz Rothfield, coach fired, news, highlights, NRL 360

Knights coach Adam O’Brien has reportedly conceded the club’s 2022 campaign is over — putting a timeline on his own tenure as the man to lead Newcastle forward.

The Knights have struggled this season, recording only five wins from 19 games, with pressure mounting on the men from the Hunter to turn their fortunes around.

O’Brien’s future as the club’s head coach has been firmly thrust into the spotlight, and now the 44-year-old has admitted he may have “six to eight weeks” at the start of the 2023 season to save his job.

Stream every game of every round of the 2022 NRL Telstra Premiership Season Live & Ad-Break Free During Play on Kayo. New to Kayo? Start your free trial now >

“I spoke to Adam O’Brien this morning, he asked me ‘how are the punters seeing it from outside’,” The Daily Telegraph’s Buzz Rothfield said on NRL360.

“I said I think everyone is happy that you are safe for the rest of the year, I then said I think you have six to eight weeks at the start of next year.

“I have agreed, 100% I have agreed.”

But NRL360 co-host Paul Kent disagreed, questioning why the club would take a gamble on a coach that has failed to meet expectations in 2022.

Meanwhile, Newcastle have signed Peter Parr as the director of football, handing over control of the Knights’ football operations.

How long will Carrigan get for hip drop? | 03:22

Kent believes that Parr won’t be willing to gamble at the start of next season as beginning each year strong is crucial to slotting into the top eight.

“If that is the case, I would now shorten that, Peter Parr has now come into the club, why would Newcastle take a gamble on the start of next year?” Kent asked.

“If you gamble the first six to eight weeks next year, after that it is all over.”

“What he is saying is this season is over, what he is saying is that the patience and the loyalty that he expects from the board will go for six to eight weeks next year,” Rothfield said.

NRL360 host Braith Anasta likened O’Brien’s situation to that of embattled Titans coach Justin Holbrook — who is also facing the ax after a tumultuous 2022 campaign.

Both made the decision to dump experienced halfbacks in Mitchell Pearce and Jamal Fogarty, and both are paying the price.

“The start of next year is just everything for both coaches,” Anasta said.

“The six weeks to start next year is going to be everything.”

“The halfback, Mitchell Pearce going, he took them to finals two years in a row and he walked,” Rothfield added.

Meanwhile, O’Brien came under fire for referencing his resume as an assistant after the club’s poor performance against the Bulldogs.

O’Brien worked under Craig Bellamy during a successful period for the Melbourne Storm, explaining he knows how to win premierships.

“Previous to getting this job here I was involved in four grand finals,” O’Brien said.

“I know how those teams prepared. I know the systems they used defensively.

“You don’t unlearn that knowledge. Applying it and getting it ingrained is clearly going to take some time.”

Kent slammed O’Brien’s claims, explaining there is a major difference between watching someone else teach a system and implementing it in your own team.

“If Adam O’Brien had his chance again he would have shut up and said nothing,” Kent said.

“And what he said there is irrelevant because it doesn’t matter if you have seen it… you have got to start being the head coach and making decisions.

“There is a big difference between being the assistant and the head coach, to know what it looks like doesn’t mean you can teach it.

“Everyone just looks at what everyone is doing, okay we will start coaching that.

“We spoke about it earlier in the year when Trent Barrett was trying to integrate Penrith’s style of attack into Canterbury.

“They are two different playing groups and sometimes you can’t just sit down and teach a fifth grader four-unit maths, you need to take the stepping stones to get there.”

17-year-old killed, 4 hurt in stabbings while tubing on Wisconsin river

SOMERSET, Wis. (AP) — A Minnesota teenager died and four other people were seriously hurt after being stabbed while tubing down a Wisconsin river, authorities said.

St. Croix County Sheriff Scott Knudson the victims and suspect, a 52-year-old Prior Lake, Minnesota man, were all on the Apple River when the attack happened Saturday afternoon. Knudson said investigators were working to determine what led to the stabbings and whether the victims and suspect knew each other. They were tubing with two different groups that included about 20 people.

“We don’t know yet who was connected to who, who knew each other or what precipitated it,” Knudson said.

The knife attack happened on a difficult-to-access section of the river near the town of Somerset, Wisconsin, which is about 35 miles (56 kilometers) east of Minneapolis. The suspect was arrested about an hour and a half later while getting off the river downstream.

“Thank goodness a witness had taken a photo of him,” Knudson told the Minneapolis Star Tribune. “Another witness located him at the exit of the tubing area, where he was taken into custody.”

A 17-year-old boy from Stillwater, Minnesota, died. Two of the other victims were flown to a hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota, and two others were taken there by ambulance. The sheriff’s office said Sunday that the condition of all four surviving victims — a woman and three men in their 20s — ranged from serious to critical. They suffered stab wounds to their chests and torsos.

The sheriff’s office didn’t name the victims, but did provide a few details about them. The victims included a 20-year-old man and a 22-year-old man from Luck, Wisconsin; a 22-year-old man from Elk River, Minnesota; and a 24-year-old woman from Burnsville, Minnesota;

The name of the suspect wasn’t immediately released, but St. Croix County jail records show a 52-year-old man was being held without bond on suspicion of first-degree homicide, four counts of aggravated battery and four counts of mayhem.

‘Among Us’ development almost ended in 2019

A co-founder at Among Us developer Innersloth has explained how the studio almost stopped active development of the social game in 2019.

Innersloth’s Marcus Bromhander appeared on the Visionaries Podcast last week (July 27) and talked about how the team was “basically done” with the game’s development in 2019 (transcription via PCGamesN).

“We were basically done with [Among Us] at the start of 2019,” said Bromhander, after the game was released in late 2018 and received updates and extra content before 2019.

Bromhander added that the team thought “that’s it, no more, time to work on something else,” and that some staff started “prototyping some other game ideas that got pretty far.”

Check out the full podcast episode below:

It was around this time in early 2019 that InnerSloth saw its social deduction game get immensely popular, so the studio changed its mind and decided to continue developing and supporting the idea.

“Should we do Among Us 2 or should we update the game that everyone is already playing?” added Bromander. “There’s so many people playing, I wanted to experience releasing updates like that to a lot of people.”

Among Us
Among Us. Credit: InnerSloth

It was then in late 2020 that InnerSloth announced it was canceling plans for an Among Us 2instead opting to push all the ideas for content into the original game.

The updates for Among Us are still coming as well, as it has had crossovers with both Space Warlord Organ Trading Simulator and Fortnite in the last few months alone.

In other news, it’s been revealed that developers and publishers at Gamescom 2022 could be paying upwards of £71,000 to show a game off during Opening Night Live. Developers will need to pay not just for the spot itself, but also make sure the studio has a presence on the show floor.
