Some Epson Printers Are Programmed to Stop Working After a Certain Amount of Use

Printers remain one of the most frustrating pieces of consumer electronics, but it turns out a thirst for pricey ink and occasionally chewing up and choking on paper aren’t the biggest challenges of using an Epson printer. Ace some users have discoveredthe hardware might be programmed to simply stop working one day, if used too frequently.

The phrase ‘planned obsolescence’ gets thrown around a lot with consumer electronics, as a practice where a product is specifically designed and built with a limited lifespan so that it needs to be upgraded or replaced in just a few years’ time. Most companies deny using this approach, or will cite very specific but questionable reasons as to why it’s necessary, as Mark Havena writer and lecturer at the University of New Haven in Connecticut, recently discovered.

Haven recently took to Twitter to share a frustrating experience with their wife’s “very expensive @EpsonAmerica printer” which, seemingly out of the blue, displayed a warning message stating that “it had reached the end of its service life.” It then simply stopped working, requiring either a servicing to bring it back from the dead, or a full-on replacement.

So what was the issue with the printer? A dead engine? A faulty circuit board? Nope. The error message was related to porous pads inside the printer that collect and contain excess ink. These wear out over time, leading to potential risks of property damage from ink spills, or potentially even damage to the printer itself. Usually, other components in the printer wear out before these pads do, or consumers upgrade to a better model after a few years, but some high-volume users may end up receiving this error message while the rest of the printer seems perfectly fine and usable .

According to the Fight to Repair Substack, the self-bricking issue affects the Epson L130, L220, L310, L360, and L365 models, but could affect other models as well, and dates back at least five years. There’s already videos on YouTube showing other Epson users manually replacing these ink pads to bring their printers back to life. The company does provide a Windows-only Ink Pad reset utility that will extend the life of the printer for a short period of time, but it can only be used once, and afterwards, the hardware will either need to be officially serviced, or completely replaced.

A few years ago, Epson released its EcoTank line of printers, which were specifically designed to address the extremely high cost of replacing the ink cartridges for color inkjet printers. The printers featured large ink reservoirs which could be easily refilled with cheaper bottles of ink, and although Epson’s EcoTank printers were more expensive as a result, in the long run they would be cheaper to operate, especially for those printing a lot of color imagery. But that assumes they actually keep working for the long run. Videos of users manually replacing their Epson printers’ ink pads seem to indicate that the company could redesign the hardware to make this part easily user-serviceable, which would extend the life of the hardware considerably. But as it stands, the company’s solution runs the risk of contributing to an ever-growing e-waste problem and forcing consumers to shell out for new hardware long before they really need to.

We’ve reached out to Epson for comment about this functionality and have asked the company which models specifically are affected by this limitation. We’ve also asked whether servicing is covered under the printer’s warranty, and what the cost may be if not, and will update this story when we hear back.

16-year-old reported missing after attending party near campground

Detectives are seeking the public’s help to locate a 16-year-old girl who has disappeared in northern California.

Kiely Rodni was last seen around 12:30 am Saturday near the Prosser Family Campground in the town of Truckee, according to the Placer County Sheriff’s Office.

Rodni attended a large party that night, alongside more than 100 young adults, detectives said Sunday. Her phone from her has been out of signal since she went missing.

The teenager was last seen wearing Dickies pants, a black tank top and has numerous piercings, including a nose ring. She stands 5 feet, 7 inches tall, weighs 115 pounds and has blonde hair and hazel eyes.

According to authorities, Rodni’s vehicle — a silver 2013 Honda CRV with a California license plate No. 8YUR127 — has also been reported missing.

The teen’s mother, Lindsey Rodni-Nieman, issued a desperate plea for the public’s help Sunday evening, saying that her family “just wants her home.”

“We’re so scared and we miss her so much, and we love her so much,” Rodni-Nieman said in the video message. “If anybody else out there, if you know where she is, if you know anything about where she might be… please come forward and share them.”

An anonymous tip line has been set up to assist with the search. Anyone with information regarding Rodni’s whereabouts is urged to contact authorities at 530-581-6320, and press option 7.

This Pokémon GO 3D Billboard Is The Reason We Invented Technology

All advertising is evil, obviously. But sometimes, despite this, it can be extraordinarily entertaining. This latest 3D billboard from outside of Tokyo’s Shinjuku Station is maybe the best use of this optical illusion tech I’ve seen, and it’s cross-promoting Pokémon GO and, er, World Cat Day.

We’ve covered the amazing 3D billboard before, funnily enough the last time it appeared to house a cat. Its cunning use of a two-storey curved screen that reaches around the corner of a building creates anamorphic optical illusions that are impressively effective. In this case, as spotted by nintendo lifeit’s to have poor Pikachu seemingly squished, then hounded off the screen by a series of Pokemon cats. Here, you can watch the full loop:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2HQDmvy5TcQ

So you’ve got Meowth, Alolan Meowth, Galarian Meowth, Skitty, Purrloin, Litten, Espurr, Glameow, and, um, Vanillite? Clearly someone wanted to do a whole frozen thing, and then realized there are no Ice type cat-likes!

The effects are just fantastic. The Poké Balls cascading to fill up the space, then seeming to spill out the front, must have people below putting up arms to shield their heads. But creepy ol’ Glameow’s moment is by far the most effective, as she appears to entirely float out of the screen.

So much about it is the fake framing of the billboard, especially those mocked up bits of scaffolding at the bottom, that allows characters to appear to reach beyond the boundaries of the screen. I could watch it all day.

This is, apparently, just the first of a series of Pokemon ads that will be appearing on the billboard between now and September 5, this first one inspired by how today is International Cat Day. No, seriously, it’s a thing. Presumably organized by cats.

It seems worth keeping an eye on Pokémon GO Japan’s YouTube channel over the month, as they’re uploading videos of the billboard there.

Man United in talks to sign Benjamin Sesko and Marko Arnautovic

Manchester United are in talks to sign Benjamin Sesko and Marko Arnautovic, sources have told ESPN.

United have made contact with Bologna about former Stoke and West Ham striker Arnautovic after Erik ten Hag pressed the club to sign an experienced forward who would be content with a back up role off the bench.

– Dawson: Familiar flaws on display as Ten Hag’s United lose opener

Arnautovic is 33-years-old and sources have told ESPN that Ten Hag is a fan of his character after working together during his time as a coach at FC Twente.

Sources have told ESPN that the move for Arnautovic is considered separate to the move for Benjamin Sesko and that talks remain ongoing with FC Salzburg for the 19-year-old forward.

Chelsea are also interested in Sesko, although sources have told ESPN that Salzburg would rather keep him until next summer. United are hopeful of adding at least one attacker to the squad before the transfer deadline on Sept. 1.

Anthony Martial is injured and Cristiano Ronaldo is still building up his fitness after a summer away from the squad while he dealt with a family issue.

Ronaldo was only named among the substitutes for the 2-1 defeat to Brighton at Old Trafford on Sunday with Ten Hag forced to use midfielder Christian Eriksen as a false No. 9.

Ten Hag was asked after the match about the need for new players but the Dutchman refused to give anything away.

“I don’t go into names and I think in this preseason 250 players are involved or linked with Man United, so that’s it,” he said. “We have two strikers [Ronaldo and Martial] maybe a third one, [Marcus] Rashford.

“We considered him as a striker, but he had a really good season on the left side and he had two really good chances but the typical nine wasn’t available today.”

Pro Clubs and VOLTA FOOTBALL combined

a

Taking the headlines, Pro Clubs and VOLTA FOOTBALL progression is now combined. VOLTA is the pick-up-and-play, launched in FIFA 20. A take on street football (RIP FIFA Street) where small-sided games and skills reign, with thousands of unlockable cosmetics available.

Now, wherever you play, your two avatars earn the same progression items. You’ll earn VOLTA coins and XP/skill points across both modes, taking the grind out of either mode. Great when you fancy casual VOLTA Arcade games over focused soccer.

In FIFA 22, Pro Clubs fans played for hours without making a dent in their level. Thanks to community feedback, the player progression system has been increased to 100 levels, allowing players to level up sooner.

There’s a host of new perks to unlock including ‘poacher’, ‘interceptor’, ‘light passes’ and an exciting new signature ability called ‘take flight’. You’ll be high-jumping at corners like Cristiano Ronaldo in no time.

At the end of a match, you’ll now see an accolades screen showing the top performers from your game, such as most distance covered and most tackles made. This is a great way of comparing yourself against the rest of your party without looking at the scoresheet.

Speaking of comparing performances, player ratings have had a refresh, and are now fairer on Pro Clubs players who play defensive roles and don’t score goals.

New, larger VOLTA stadium in rotation which has much bouncier walls and a bigger goal area. More space equals more time on the ball, and this will change the way VOLTA plays. Fans of the small, current arenas don’t fear – the new stadium will appear 50% of the time along with other arenas.

With every new game comes new cosmetics, and finally in FIFA 23, your Pro Clubs and VOLTA player can have tattoos! There are also loads of the latest soccer boots and facial accessories including the broken nose protector. Sadly, some of the sillier items won’t be usable in Pro Clubs. As ever, players can expect new content to be released in batches throughout the year.

Michigan: inquiry urged into claims of Republican-led voting-machine breach | Michigan

Michigan’s attorney general has called for a special prosecutor to investigate allegations of a Republican-led effort to gain unauthorized access to voting equipment in the aftermath of the 2020 national election.

Attorney General Dana Nessel, a Democrat, called for the investigation on Friday after Michigan state police examined whether Matt DePerno, a lawyer and presumptive Republican candidate for the office, may have orchestrated the alleged effort.

It came after reports that Donald Trump supporters persuaded clerks to give them access to the voting machines in an effort to prove that fraud cost the former president a second term. Such claims of a fraudulent election have been repeatedly shown to be false.

Nessel’s office said on Friday that an investigation had led them to DePerno who, it claimed, had “orchestrated a coordinated plan to gain access to voting tabulators”. Calls for a special prosecutor were first published by Politico, citing a petition from Nessel.

The attorney general’s office claims that investigators found that voting tabulators had been removed, broken into and tested at hotels and short-term rentals.

“When this investigation began, there was not a conflict of interest,” Nessel’s petition said. “However, during the course of the investigation, facts were developed that DePerno was one of the prime instigators of the conspiracy.”

Reuters reported on Sunday that DePerno had led a team to examine a vote tabulator from Richfield Township, a conservative stronghold of 3,600 people in northern Michigan’s Roscommon county, in one of four possible breaches of Michigan law prohibiting unauthorized access to voting equipment under investigation.

According to Nessel’s petition, five tabulators were taken from Roscommon and Missaukee counties in northern Michigan, and Barry county in western Michigan.

The request for a prosecutor also names Ben Cotton, Jeff Lenberg, Cyber Ninjas founder Douglas Logan and James Penrose. Each have been involved in efforts to question the 2020 election and were allegedly involved in the Michigan “tests”.

Under Michigan law, obtaining undue possession of a voting machine used in an election is a felony punishable by five years in prison.

DePerno is the Trump-endorsed candidate for the state’s republican attorney general nomination and supports the ex-president’s false claims about his 2020 loss in the state, which was instrumental in his defeat to Joe Biden. He has been endorsed by Michigan attorney general by state Republicans and is likely to be officially nominated later this month.

At the CPAC conference in Dallas earlier this month, Trump said DePerno is “going to make sure that you are going to have law and order and fair elections.”

If Nessel’s petition for a special prosecutor is successful, the prosecutor would then be called to determine if the state should bring criminal charges against DePerno and eight other associates alleged to have taken part in the effort.

DePerno’s campaign manager, Tyson Shepard, accused Nessel in the Detroit News of having a “history of targeting and persecuting her political enemies.”

Shepard added: “Dana Nessel knows she is losing this race. She is desperate to win this election at all costs and is now targeting DePerno, her political opponent of her.

He called Nessel’s actions “unethical” and said they would “demonstrate to the voters that she is unfit for office.”

Why it’s not the end of the world if Carlton misses the top eight

It’s not the end of the world if Carlton falls out of the top eight from here, according to David King.

The Blues need to win one more game to make it, with the Bulldogs likely to overtake them on percentage if they don’t.

Losses to Adelaide and Brisbane on the road have left them still needing that 13th win, with Melbourne and Collingwood to come.

With an injury list in double digits all season and the pending suspension of Patrick Cripps, that final victory feels unlikely.

However, King believes Carlton has laid out their game style, since they have the tools and shouldn’t be too dismayed if they miss out.

“We were there at the start of the season for their practice game at IKON Park to work out who they are. They were going flat out at every training session, flat out at every pre-season game. It’s a long year,” King told SEN Breakfast.

“They’ve shown this season that in 2023 and 2024 they’re going to be a force. They’ve set standards.

“They aren’t as physically imposing as they were in the first eight weeks of the season, they aren’t as brutal in the contest and clearance, their top players maybe aren’t in ripping form, they’ve hit the wall a little bit for me

“Which is probably expected. I probably expected this with Collingwood, Hawthorn, the first-time coaches coming in have got to set standards and get rolling so early in pre-season and there’s no tapering.

“It hasn’t happened at Collingwood, but it has happened at Carlton. There’s no shame in that.

“If Cripps gets a few weeks and they go in without three or four of their midfield set, they’ll get what they get, but there’s so many positives out of Carlton this year.

“It doesn’t really matter if you finish seventh, eighth, ninth or 10th. It doesn’t change where you’re going next year.

“I just think the positives far outweigh the negatives.

“I’d love to do a study on teams that have finished seventh and eighth the last few years and how it’s impacted the following two to three seasons. Has it actually helped them or is it a false economy?

“They go so hard in the last three weeks to limp into eighth and more often than not they’re out week one and all the talk and all the excitement, it just becomes a nonsense.

“In terms of the way they play, I think there’s been enormous gains this year. Michael Voss has done a great job.

“They’ve run out of personnel. Injuries have got them.”

On top of likely losing Cripps for the final two games, the Blues will likely be without Matt Kennedy (broken jaw) and George Hewett (back) from their starting midfield group.

The Blues will seemingly have at least 14 players unavailable for Saturday night’s clash with Melbourne.

The Spy Who Loved Me Is The GoldenEye 007 Sequel You Need To Play

Gaming legends don’t come much bigger than golden eye 007and while we never got a sequel to Rare’s Nintendo 64 classic, the legacy of golden eye 007 went on to inspire everything from Perfect Dark to Call of Duty. Although first-person shooters were largely defined by DOOMit was golden eye 007 that proved their worth on home consoles.

Based on the 1995 movie of the same name, golden eye came to the N64 in 1997 and changed the way we game forever. While the story continued with Eurocom’s 2010 remake for the Wii U, plans for a long-rumored new-gen remaster have ground to a halt. If you want to get your fix, how about playing The Spy Who Loved Me?

What Is The Spy Who Loved Me?

As the work of modder Graslu00, The Spy Loved Me imagine a Bond game made by Rare. Instead of jumping off the dam and touring the USSR with Natalia, we’re teaming up with Anya Amasova and heading to Egypt to take on Jaws. While Graslu00 doesn’t explain why they picked The Spy Who Loved Me out of all the Bond movies, it’s still a lot of fun.

Based on the 1977 movie that starred Roger Moore, this mod reimagines the basic mechanics of golden eye 007 as a whole new game. The hour-long video runs through a variety of levels. From the iconic parachute opening of the Alps to Karl Stromberg’s underwater lair in Liparus, we get to see the whole game play out. With this being a Moore movie, the character model of Pierce Brosnan is swapped out for Moore’s likeness of him as 007.

The Spy Who Loved Me runs 4K at 60 frames per second through an emulator, but retro gamers will also be able to play it on an N64. If you’re sold, you can play The Spy Who Loved Me demo and the first three levels thanks to N64 Vault. Even though there’s no release date for the actual game, the reaction from fans proves it’s one we should be keeping an eye on.

Fans React To The Spy Who Loved Me

The Spy Who Loved Me GoldenEye 007

N64 Vault

We aren’t the only ones who loved The Spy Who Loved Me. One supporter cheered, “Fans prove again the modding community can put out absolutely God-tier creations. Seriously kudos to everyone behind this! Looks amazing.” Another said, “This was really well put together, I thought it was going to be a copy and paste of renamed levels with different objectives. Nah You went all out dawg. You nailed it! It’s like a legitimate Goldeneye 2.” A third concluded, “This really is amazing! My favorite game of all time meets my favorite film of all time!”

Unfortunately, modding is the best we can hope for at the moment when it comes to golden eye 007. Last year, footage from a canceled Xbox remake appeared online. Way back when, Microsoft had been working on a remake, but due to the Wii U remaster, it was axed at the last minute. This isn’t the first time Graslu00 has headed into the world of golden eyewith us previously writing about their impressive Mario 64 and golden eye 007 crossover. Once again, the modding community does what the devs never could.
