RIP Paul Green: High school sweetheart’s heartbreaking tribute, NRL news 2022

Paul Green’s high school sweetheart has shared a heartbreaking tribute to the former rugby league coach after his tragic death rocked the NRL community this week.

The 49-year-old was found dead at his Brisbane home on Thursday morning, the day after his son’s ninth birthday. It has been confirmed he took his own life from him.

The Courier Mail reports Green called his friend and longtime manager George Mimis at 4.30pm on Wednesday to speak about his son’s birthday celebrations.

The News Corp publication also reports the footy legend’s wife Amanda found him unresponsive at their home after returning from doing pilates at the gym.

Green’s death comes 11 months after he was sacked as head coach of the Maroons following Queensland’s loss in last year’s State of Origin series, which included a 50-6 win for the Blues.

Speaking on Gold Coast’s 92.5 Triple M Breakfast show, radio announcer Ali Plath fought back tears while grieving the loss of her first love.

“My heart is breaking today for his wife Amanda and his beautiful kids and obviously his parents, and his four siblings,” she said.

“Paul and I went to high school together, he was my first love. You only get one first love.

“We were together when I was in Year 12 for a year and then we split up. I had kids with (former partner) Mark and when that didn’t work out, Paul and I got back together.

“We then did nine years of on-off, long-distance, de facto… I guess we were that couple that I think our family and friends were so much happier than we were when we finally split up.

“Paul was a wonderful stepdad to my two older kids Jesse and Jake when we all lived in Sydney together when I finally had the courage to move them.

“For him to swallow his pride and I guess take my kids under his wing, I really didn’t appreciate how big that was at the time. It’s a big responsibility taking on someone else’s family.

“Paul was extremely loyal, he was highly intelligent — even though I used to tell him I was smarter than him. When I was in Year 12, he was two years older than me, and he was getting up for not doing my schoolwork.

“He just had such a great sense of fun as well as being so capable. If Paul said to you, ‘I’m going to be a pilot’, (you knew) he was going to be a pilot. And he did – he was a commercial pilot.

“My mum let him take me to Hervey Bay in this mosquito airplane when he was doing his training. That’s how capable Paul was. You trusted him, you knew he could do it, I never doubted him.

“He was just one of those people who you knew you could rely on. (As an NRL player), he was one of those players you could count on and he would give his all of him.

“I can’t believe that he’s done this, I can’t believe this has happened.

“That’s not Paul. I’m actually in complete and utter shock. I only spoke to him a couple of months ago.

“It’s horrible.”

Meanwhile, Green’s family is still coming to terms with the footy legend’s passing and revealed plans for a celebration of his life.

Green’s brother Rick told The Sunday Mail the family had come together to plan a public funeral, expected to be held August 23 or 30 at Kougari Oval, the home of the Wynnum-Manly Seagulls, a team Green both played with and coached to premiership glory.

But Rick also revealed the family was struggling to come to terms with the enormous loss.

“Everyone is feeling overwhelmed,” he told The Sunday Mail.

“There’s certainly a lot of stories that we’re sharing about our times with Paul but as we reflect on those good times, there’s a great sadness at his passing.

“It’s still very raw and difficult to process.”

The family had earlier released a statement after the news broke of Green’s death.

“Today we are devastated,” the statement began.

“We have lost a devoted husband, loving father and wonderful brother and son. We cannot find the words that would come close to expressing our feeling, however we would like to extend our thanks to those who have reached out to us with their love and support.

“Paul was loved by so many and we know that this news will generate immense interest, however at this time we ask for privacy.

“Our family is still trying to understand this tragedy and we request space and time as we come to terms with this loss. Thank you.”

How to break Sanctuary Rocks in Tower of Fantasy

Throughout Tower of Fantasy, players will come across Sanctuary Rocks that will lead to a hidden room on the other side. These rocks are giant walls with cracks in them that are highlighted when a player targets them. It takes more than a simple target and attack combination to open them up, however.

youtube-cover

The only way to break open the Sanctuary Rocks and access the area on the other side is by using a Relic called the Missile Barrage. This can be obtained fairly early in the game, in one of the very first dungeons.

Players will quickly realize that Sanctuary Rocks are near-indestructible, even though they look somewhat destroyed already. Moreover, Tower of Fantasy doesn’t really explain how they can be fully broken at the start. To do that, the Missile Barrage is the tool needed.

Missile Barrage is a Relic that can be utilized in and out of combat. In both instances, the Relic spawns a missile launcher behind the player and fires several missiles forward.

The Relic can be made to shoot missiles wildly or in a specific direction by targeting hostiles and rock walls. Each missile that lands deals a solid 34.8% damage based on the player’s ATK stat, which means the entire barrage can dish out a lot of hurt.

Players just need to open the Relics menu and select the Missile Barrage. It can be assigned to one of the Relic shortcut buttons or activated right from the Relics page.

If missiles are used on Sanctuary Rocks, they will break. A massive hole will be opened that Tower of Fantasy players will be able to enter, revealing an area devoid of enemies. Players can rest here for a moment and potentially find a lot of treasure as well.

Getting the Missile Barrage Relic depends on how fast players move through the first chapter in Tower of Fantasy. Those that focus on the story and its missions instead of exploring aimlessly can get to that point rather quickly.

By completing the main questline, players will eventually be introduced to the dungeons. These are called Ruins, and the first one, Ruins A-01, must be completed to forward the story.

While inside Ruins A-01, players will stumble upon a character named Smart Servant Peanut. Interacting with this NPC will grant them the Enchanted Cube Relic. This item can be opened to reveal the Missile Barrage Relic.

This is the first weekend with #ToF! Have you and your team joined us yet? 🤗Share your best footage of you&your teammates with #ToFweekendparty and @ them! We will draw 1 team to win a $50 pizza voucher + more mystery gifts from our friends! 🍕Stay tuned for more prizes! 💰 https://t.co/C1ImKzcN0c

The game will provide a brief explanation regarding the Missile Barrage tool and allow players to use it for the first time; several Sanctuary Rocks are found inside Ruins A-01 that can be broken down with the Relic.

The remainder of the dungeon needs to be beaten, including its final boss, so that players can continue exploring in Tower of Fantasy and utilize the Missile Barrage on Sanctuary Rocks elsewhere.

Ian Foster has ‘no idea’ if he will remain as head coach

New Zealand head coach Ian Foster concedes that his future remains uncertain, despite their momentous victory over South Africa on Saturday.

Following a dreadful run of five defeats in six, including a 26-10 reversal at the hands of the Springboks last weekend, Foster has been a man under significant pressure.

There were reports that another loss to the Boks would pretty much guarantee his departure, but he has perhaps kept himself in the role until the end of the competition following Saturday’s success.

That is not guaranteed, however, with suggestions before the game that even a victory at Ellis Park might not save the beleaguered head coach.

enjoying the win

And asked by Sky Sports if he would still be in charge for the Argentina games, Foster responded: “I have no idea, I am just going to enjoy tonight.

“It’s never easy when you are coming off a couple of losses, but so proud. Just so proud of the effort. It’s swings and roundabouts… they hung in and finished strong.”

Foster also felt a certain amount of vindication after saying their performance last week was the ‘best of the year’ as they built on aspects of that display to emerge triumphant in Johannesburg.

“I know I got a little bit mocked for saying that last week, after the loss, but we made a big shift last week through our forward pack,” he added.

“The work (forwards coach) Jason Ryan has done out there was strong, and I really felt we were creating a few opportunities. We wanted it so much we were rushing things. Whereas today, we were just more patient.”

‘Pride’ was the watchword for the All Blacks, who overcame a series of poor results and the stinging criticism that has come with it to defeat their great rivals at the hostile Ellis Park.

“Proud is an understatement, mate,” captain Sam Cane told SuperSport.

“Through adversity, it really challenges your character and this group has got plenty of character. It’s never been a question of how much we care or how much we want it.

“We just needed to get a few parts of our game right and yeah, a massive challenge coming here, one of the toughest places in the world to play and the group stepped up massively.

Hugely proud. I’d just like to say a massive thank you to everyone who has been supporting us, particularly the last month which has been pretty challenging. We feel all that support and jeez, it means a lot.”

Key facets in the victory

Cane also identified several areas which were key to their huge triumph over the Springboks, which put them in Rugby Championship contention.

“Look, we were a lot better at the breakdown tonight and we dealt with the box kicks, the contestables, a lot better,” he added.

“Set-piece was good, we defended the maul really well so lots of little parts of our game which is what Test footy is about, getting little parts of your game right time and time angina so you can build some pressure. Massively stoked.”

Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered PC Nearing 65000 Concurrent Players on Steam

Marvel’s Spider-Man has become a cult classic since it’s 2018 release. Insomniac Games’ spectacular work on the game has led to an amazing experience, and PC players have finally joined the fun.

The web slinger’s last entry on PC platforms was well over 7 years ago. Spider-Man is finally back on PC, and his return from him has been incredible. Before release, Spider-Man Remastered managed to reach the second spot on the Steam best sellers list. However, this was just the beginning.

Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered has nearly accumulated 65000 concurrent players on Steam.

Source: Steamdb

The web slinger has now joined former PlayStation exclusives in the list of successful PC releases. Spider-Man Remastered has captured the PC audience with its fluid web swinging, varied combat, and heart wrenching story. Moreover, the PC release also comes with all the features from the PlayStation 5 version, with the added benefits of PC hardware.

However, the game is still not PlayStation’s most successful release on Steam, at least in terms of concurrent players on Steam. That title is still held by God of War with 73,529 concurrent players. Despite Spider-Man being older and more popular than Kratos, it seems like God of War has managed to best the web slinger in this regard.

Perhaps some of this could be attributed to Spider-Man Remastered’s PC port. The game runs well for the most part, but users have reported abnormally high CPU usage from the game, especially when using ray-tracing. Spider-Man Remastered has also launched at a higher price than God of War, though the difference is limited to $10. However, the game has just been released, and this number could go up soon.

The PC release includes all the features fans have come to expect from a PC port. Ultrawide support, high frame-rates, and an FOV slider are all included in the game. Additionally, the PC port also comes bundled with all previous DLC stories.

Marvel’s Spider-Man has been a monumental title for Sony. Nearly four years after the original release, Marvel’s Spider-Man is still doing well. The PC release has rekindled the hype for Spider-Man games, and this will likely continue with the release of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

All Blacks beat Springboks, New Zealand Rugby CEO calls press conference, Ian Foster, Mark Robinson

Under-fire All Blacks coach Ian Foster praised his team and criticized the New Zealand media after a 35-23 triumph over South Africa in The Rugby Championship in Johannesburg.

The second-round victory halted a horror run in which New Zealand lost five of six matches, including three to Ireland and one each to France and South Africa.

Some pre-match media reports claimed a second loss to the Springboks within a week would lead to Foster quitting or being sacked. The victory still might not save his career from him, with New Zealand Rugby CEO Mark Robinson calling for an afternoon press conference.

In his post-match interview on field, Foster was asked whether he expected to continue coaching the All Blacks throughout the Rugby Championship.

Foster responded by saying he had “no idea”.

A South African columnist also labeled the visiting team “Foster’s Impostors”.

“It (media criticism) comes with the job, but it has been a pretty vicious onslaught, particularly from the New Zealand media,” Foster told reporters.

“Calling them ‘popgun selections’ I feel is quite insulting to players who are giving their all for the country. But these times are the best test of character.

“I’m intensely proud of the performance. I could not be more proud. To do that at altitude with the game swinging around — there were times we could have won and times we could have lost.

“It was 0-0 for a long time and you could feel it was a real arm-wrestle, but that is what South Africa are like here.

“You have to bide your time and we wanted to target the second half and tired legs with the way we wanted to play.”

All Blacks skipper Sam Cane has also been under constant media fire, with some questioning not only his leadership skills, but whether he has served a starting place.

“Adversity really challenges your character and this group has got plenty of character,” said try-scorer Cane.

“There has never been a question of how much we care or how much we want it,” he added.

Springboks coach Jacques Nienaber said they lost for a sixth time in 15 Tests against the All Blacks at Ellis Park because they failed to reproduce the form that brought a 26-10 win last weekend.

“We did not control the game in the first half, we were not as accurate as last week. So they kept offloading, taking high-risk options, but we did not contain them.

“We did well to come back, but then they controlled the game again until the end. Generally they control the set-pieces and the kicking game. Our kicks were not accurate enough.”

South Africa captain Siya Kolisi said “it does not feel good at all to lose, especially to our great rivals.

“We have been saying all week that the All Blacks just need one moment to click. They really imposed their game on us and they came with a lot of energy today.

“They were very good at the breakdown, they were a little more accurate than us and cleaned us out there. Especially when we were gaining momentum, they were quicker than us to get there.”

‘Marvel’s Spider-Man’ PC mod gives players the black symbiote suit

A mod for the recently released PC port of Marvel’s Spider-Man finally lets players equip a version of the iconic symbiote suit.

The remastered version of Insomniac Games’ take on the wall crawler was released earlier this week (August 12) on Steam, and Nexus Mods is already no stranger to a number of visual and mechanical mods for the title.

One in particular is a take on the iconic black symbiote suit, from jedizosh920, which came from a symbiote that bonded itself to Peter Parker in the 1984 comic event Secret Wars, and it’s now available for PC players to download. It combines the Advanced suit from Marvel’s Spider-Man with an all-black look.

While this mod was shown off for the PS4 version of the game in 2020, it’s now available to download for PC players – check it out in the video below.

What makes this take on the suit significant is that we could be seeing Insomniac take a swing at its own version of it in next year’s Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. The sequel is confirmed to include Venom, who gets the symbiote after Spider-Man in the comics, but it also looks like Kraven The Hunter is involved.

Throughout the trailer an unseen figure says they’ve been looking for an equal, “one who could push me, one who could surprise me, one who could even beat me. Yet all I found was disappointment.”

Whilst unconfirmed, this sounds a lot like Kraven, as the character hunts Spider-Man as the ultimate prey. In fact, the character takes Spider-Man’s suit in the 1987 comic Kraven’s Last Hunt, with the hunter wearing it after he thinks he has killed the hero. Whilst this looks like the same black suit, it is actually a standard cloth one made after Peter and the symbiote depart, but the imagery could certainly play into the next game.

If both Kraven and Venom are in the game, we could expect the black symbiote suit simply because both characters have been tied to the look in some way in the past. You can find the symbiote suit mod here.

Clean Cats eclipse Suns – bay 93.9 Geelong

CLEAN ball movement in trying conditions has helped Geelong to a convincing AFLW practice match win over the Gold Coast.

The Cats ran out 36-point winners over the Suns, 8.4 (52) to 2.4 (16), as persistent rain fell on the outer ground at Metricon Stadium.

“A lot of our focuses over the last two or three months – and even towards the back end of last season – around our ball movement to make sure that we’re a bit more clean and efficient, those signs were really evident today, which is really promising,” coach Dan Lowther told Geelong Broadcasters

“In trying conditions, they moved the ball quite well at times.

“And our new players that we’ve brought into the team over the last 12-18 months added a bit of class around the ball and (on) the outside.

“Our efficiency moving the ball from one end of the ground to the other allowed for a cleaner game, even though the conditions would have come otherwise normally.”

Several players who pulled on a Geelong jumper for the first time stood out for Lowther, who has a relatively injury-free list to pick from.

“Shelley Scott played down back for us and was a really solid contributor,” he said.

“Her experience and her smarts down there really steadied the ship at times for us, which is pleasing.

“Jackie Parry up forward tried really hard.

“Her composition at the ball was really important at times.

“Mikayla Bowen on the wing did a very good job in the first half.”

Geelong got through the match injury-free, although Geelong fans watching the live stream may have been concerned when captain Meg McDonald was forced from the ground during the last quarter.

“(It was) just a really good upper-thigh cramp,” he said. “It looked like she’d gone down for the count.

“She had some issues cramping early.

“We had 20-minute flat quarters today, so less rotations meant she played longer minutes.

“She’ll be fine.”

Geelong starts AFLW Season 7 against Richmond at GMHBA Stadium on Sunday, August 28.

Open-source rival for OpenAI’s DALL-E runs on your graphics card

Open-source rival for OpenAI's DALL-E runs on your graphics card

Image: Stable Diffusion

Der Artikel kann nur mit aktiviertem JavaScript dargestellt werden. Bitte aktiviere JavaScript in deinem Browser und lade die Seite neu.

OpenAI’s DALL-E 2 is getting free competition. Behind it is an AI open-source movement and the startup Stability AI.

Artificial intelligence that can generate images from text descriptions has been making rapid progress since early 2021. At that time, OpenAI showed impressive results with DALL-E 1 and CLIP. The open-source community used CLIP for numerous alternative projects throughout the year. Then in 2022, OpenAI released the impressive DALL-E 2, Google showed Image and Parti, Midjourney reached millions, and Craiyon flooded social media with AI images.

Startup Stability AI now announced the release of stable diffusionanother DALL-E 2-like system that will initially be gradually made available to new researchers and other groups via a Discord server.

After a testing phase, Stable Diffusion will then be released for free – the code and a trained model will be published as open source. There will also be a hosted version with a web interface for users to test the system.

Stability AI funds free DALL-E 2 competitor

Stable Diffusion is the result of a collaboration between researchers at Stability AI, RunwayML, LMU Munich, EleutherAI and LAION. The research collective EleutherAI is known for its open-source language models GPT-J-6B and GPT-NeoX-20B, among others, and is also conducting research on multimodal models.

The non-profit LAION (Large-scale Artificial Intelligence Open Network) provided the training data with the open-source LAION 5B dataset, which the team filtered with human feedback in an initial testing phase to create the final LAION-Aesthetics training dataset.

Patrick Esser of Runway and Robin Rombach of LMU Munich led the project, building on their work in the CompVis group at Heidelberg University. There, they created the widely used VQGAN and Latent Diffusion. The latter served as the basis for Stable Diffusion with research from OpenAI and Google Brain.

Stability AI, founded in 2020, is backed by mathematician and computer scientist Emad Mostaque. He worked as an analyst for various hedge funds for a few years before turning to public work. In 2019, I have helped found Symmitree, a project that aims to lower the cost of smartphones and Internet access for disadvantaged populations.

With Stability AI and his private fortune, Mostaque aims to foster the open-source AI research community. His startup from him previously supported the creation of the “LAION 5B” dataset, for example. For training the stable-diffusion model, Stability AI provided servers with 4,000 Nvidia A100 GPUs.

“Nobody has any voting rights except our 75 employees — no billionaires, big funds, governments, or anyone else with control of the company or the communities we support. We’re completely independent,” Mostaque told TechCrunch. “We plan to use our compute to accelerate open source, foundational AI.”

Stable Diffusion is an open-source milestone

Currently, a test for Stable Diffusion is underway, with new additions being distributed in waves. The results, which can be seen on Twitter, for example, show that a real DALL-E-2 competitor is emerging here.

Stable Diffusion is more versatile than Midjourney, but has a lower resolution than DALL-E 2. | Image: Github

Unlike DALL-E 2, Stable Diffusion can generate images of prominent people and other subjects that OpenAI prohibits in DALL-E 2. Other systems like Midjourney or Pixelz.ai can do this as well, but do not achieve comparable quality with the high diversity seen in Stable Diffusion – and none of the other systems are open source .

Stable Diffusion is already expected to run on a single graphics card with 5.1 gigabytes of VRAM – bringing AI technology to the edge that until now has only been available through cloud services. Stable Diffusion thus offers researchers and interested parties without access to GPU servers the opportunity to experiment with a modern generative AI model. The model is also supposed to run on MacBooks with Apple’s M1 chip. However, image generation takes several minutes instead of seconds here.

OpenAI’s DALL-E 2 gets an open-source competition, led by an open-source community and startup Stability AI. | Image: Github

Stability AI itself also wants to enable companies to train their variant of Stable Diffusion. Multimodal models are thus following the path previously taken by large language models: away from a single provider and toward the broad availability of numerous alternatives through open source.

Runway is already researching text-to-video editing enabled by Stable Diffusion.

Stable diffusion: Pandora’s box and net benefits

Of course, with open access and the ability to run the model on a widely available GPU, the opportunity for abuse increases dramatically.

“A percentage of people are simply unpleasant and weird, but that’s humanity,” Mostaque said. “Indeed, it is our belief this technology will be prevalent, and the paternalistic and somewhat condescending attitude of many AI fans is misguided in not trusting society.”

Most stresses, however, that free availability allows the community to develop countermeasures.

“We are taking significant safety measures including formulating cutting-edge tools to help mitigate potential harms across release and our own services. With hundreds of thousands developing on this model, we are confident the net benefit will be immensely positive and as billions use this tech harms will be negated.”

More information is available on the Stable Diffusion github. You can find many examples of Stable Diffusion’s image generation capabilities in the Stable Diffusion subreddit. Go here for the beta signup for Stable Diffusion.
