‘$15 beers’: biggest tax hike in 30 years paints sobering future for Australia’s ale drinkers | beer

Pour one out for Australia’s beer drinkers as the price of an ale at the pub surges up to $15 following the largest tax hike in more than three decades.

The Australian Tax Office announced the excise on beer would be lifted by 4%, or $2.50 more a liter on Monday under its CPI indexation review.

The Brewers Association of Australia said it was the biggest increase in more than 30 years to hit a market that was already taxed more than “almost any other nation”.

“We have seen almost 20 increases in Australia’s beer tax over the past decade alone,” CEO John Preston said.

“Sadly, we’re now seeing the impact as pub patrons will soon be faced with the prospect of regularly paying around $15 for a pint at their local.

“For a small pub, club or other venue the latest tax hike will mean an increase of more than $2,700 a year in their tax bill – at a time when they are still struggling to deal with the ongoing impacts of the pandemic.”

Australia’s excise on beer is adjusted twice a year according to inflation, which is growing at its fastest pace in more than two decades with a peak not expected until the end of the year. Wine operates under a separate taxation system.

A report by economist and University of Adelaide professor Kym Anderson AC, commissioned by the Brewers Association in 2020, found Australians paid the fourth-highest beer tax in the world compared with advanced OECD and EU countries.

Only Norway, Japan and Finland paid more.

The next highest-taxing countries were the United Kingdom and Ireland, but their rates were still about 30% lower than Australia’s between 2018 and 2020.

At $2.26 a liter of alcohol, Australians paid a whopping 18 times more than Germany, 15 times more than Spain, seven times more than the US and six times more than Canada. It also paid nearly double its neighbor in New Zealand.

In 2020-2021, the government received $2.5bn in excise and customs duty on beer, including draft and packaged beverages. The beer tax accounted for about 42% of the retail price of a carton of beer.

At the same time, Australians have been named the heaviest drinkers in the world – spending more time drunk than any other nation in 2020. And beer is a popular drop.

According to the latest ABS figures, beer accounted for 39% of the 191.2m liters of pure alcohol available for consumption around Australia in 2017-2018.

Preston said brewers and operators were “extremely disappointed” the former government didn’t reduce the beer tax in the March budget as was proposed, and called for beer tax relief prior to another raise in February 2023.

Greens Senator Lidia Thorpe calls the Queen a ‘coloniser’ in oath and gives Black Power salute as she’s sworn into parliament

Greens Senator Lidia Thorpe has been forced to undertake her parliamentary oath for a second time after referring to the Queen as a “coloniser”.

The outspoken Senator for Victoria lifted her fist into the air in what appeared to be a black power salute as she marched towards the central table of the chamber on Monday morning.

She then sarcastically recited the oath of allegiance and added her own spin, which was swiftly shut down by other senators.

“I sovereign, Lidia Thorpe, do solemnly and sincerely affirm and declare that I will be faithful, and I bear true allegiance to the colonizing Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II,” she said, drawing uproar from the Senate.

“You’re not a senator if you don’t do it properly,” interjected one Senator.

“None of us like it,” Ms Thorpe said amid the commotion.

Senate President Sue Lines reprimanded Ms Thorpe for directing her “to recite the oath as printed on the card.”

Ms Thorpe reluctantly finished the correct oath and was sworn into Parliament.

She later took to Twitter to declare: “Sovereignty never ceded.”

Greens leader Adam Bandt threw his support behind Ms Thorpe’s gesture, tweeting: “Always was. Always will be.”

Ms Thorpe has been highly outspoken about the nation’s colonialist history, and has repeatedly argued the Australian flag represents “dispossession, massacre and genocide”.

“The colonial project came here and murdered our people well I’m sorry that we’re not happy about that,” she told ABC radio in June.

“I’m sorry that this flag represents so much trauma for so many people, not all people but so many and they’re the people that I’m representing.”

Last week, Ms Thorpe posted a tweet criticizing the oath of allegiance.

“It’s 2022 and we’re swearing allegiance to a queen of another country,” she wrote.

Politicians are required to recite the oath before taking their seat in parliament.

Ms Thorpe has previously revealed she was only a member to “infiltrate” the system.

“I am here for my people, and I will sacrifice swearing allegiance to the colonizer to get into the media like I am right now, to get into the parliament like I am every day,” she told Network Ten’s the Project.

“To make this country put a mirror up to itself and ask, who are we? Where do we come from and where are we going?”

The rate at which Biden has driven the US economy into the ground is ‘genuinely astounding:’ Steve Hilton

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

“‘The Next Revolution” host Steve Hilton blamed President Biden on Sunday for turning a strong US economy into a ‘weak, stagnant’ one, calling the rate at which the country has entered a technical recession “genuinely astounding” – considering the state of the economy under former President Trump.

US ECONOMY ENTERS TECHNICAL RECESSION AFTER GROWTH TUMBLES 0.9% IN THE SECOND QUARTER

STEVE HILTON: Just out of interest, I went back and read Biden’s inaugural address again, and I noticed something amazing. Not the endless disingenuous policies about unity, but the fact he barely even talks about the economy. He it’s hardly mentioned and now we know why. Because Biden’s current economic plan now coming into full horrific view was this: how quickly and how comprehensively can we take a strong growing economy and turn it into a weak, shrinking, stagnant one? And the answer is, pretty damn quickly.

Revised GDP numbers show the economy shrank at an even faster rate than previously reported during the first quarter, and now it is down again. So that does mean we’re in a recession. The rate at which this Biden regime has driven our economy into the ground is actually genuinely astounding.

It was only just a few years ago with Trump that we had the best economy for half a century. Blue collar boom, the lowest unemployment levels we’ve ever seen, especially for women, Black people and Latinos. But now look, we went from becoming a net energy exporter to waging a self-defeating war on energy… we went from affordable gas prices to the highest average cost per gallon on record, from pro-growth to anti-growth, pro-America to anti-America. This is Biden’s mad agenda and this is Biden’s avoidable recession.

Reason many Aussies are ditching supermarkets

Supermarkets are forcing many people to overspend, costing households an extra $1,200 each year, new research has revealed.

A survey of more than 2000 Australians found about two in five people frequently overspend their food budget and 82 per cent now splurge up to $200 on their weekly grocery shop.

The research, conducted by meal kit delivery service HelloFresh, also found 71 per cent of respondents were worried food items would continue to become more expensive.

Other key findings from the research found:

  • Ninety per cent of people are spending up to $100 per month on discounted impulse buys, while 88 per cent are doing the same for full-price impulse buys at the supermarket;
  • About two in five people frequently purchase discounted items they did not plan to buy; and
  • Three in five Australians are frequently traveling to multiple supermarkets to find all the ingredients they need for a meal.

The rising cost of food at supermarkets has led to some people turning to meal kit services.

Rebecca from Victoria told NCA NewsWire she used to shop at Coles and Woolworths, depending on which was closest to home or work on any given day.

“I would usually pop in multiple times throughout the week to get ingredients for dinner that night; I’d end up spending at least $40 every time I went into the supermarket, if not more,” she said.

“I switched to HelloFresh because I was getting tired of going through the same process every day when it came to thinking about dinner.

“I had to think about who’s around, what they’d want to eat and what I could be bothered making.

“Knowing that I wouldn’t have to do the mad dash to the supermarket after work was the biggest thing that made me swap to using HelloFresh.”

Rebecca’s partner has two children who are with them on weekends, so by making the move away from supermarkets, she says she is now saving about $100 per week.

HelloFresh chief executive and founder Tom Rutledge said his company offered a better value option for people wanting to save on dinner, while also saving time and reducing food waste.

“At this challenging time, it’s more important than ever that Aussies get the most out of their weekly food shop,” he said.

“As grocery prices go up and the cost of living continues to be a concern for Aussies, people are looking for better-value options for their groceries.

“We want to remind Aussies that there’s an alternative to shopping at the supermarket. By using HelloFresh, Aussies can save up to 24 per cent on the cost of dinner, while also saving time and food waste, with convenient home delivery and pre-portioned ingredients.”

TikTok ramps up its gaming initiative by adding mini-games to the platform

Video platform TikTok has added mini-games to the service to test the waters before making a push into gaming.

As reported by TechCrunch, TikTok’s gaming pilot includes partnered developers such as Voodoo, Nitro Games, FRVR, Aim Lab, and Lotem, with these developers being involved with the nine currently available mini-games. This comes off the heels of TikTok partnering with mobile gaming developer Zynga for the release of the game Crazy Disc 3D exclusively on TikTok.

A spokesperson from the company revealed to TechCrunch that “we’re always looking at ways to enrich our platform and regularly test new features and integrations that bring value to our community,” and continued to state “currently, we’re exploring bringing HTML5 games to TikTok through integrations with third-party game developers and studios.”

It is also noted that “the initiative is in the very early stages of testing”, and that none of the games are currently monetized with adds or in-game purchases, with the pilot simply being a test to see how users of the service interact with and create content around the games.

The games can be accessed via the “Add Link” option, which leads to a “MiniGame” tab, however Crazy Disc 3D is listed separately at the time of publication. The games are available in both the UK and US versions of the app.

TikTok also released mini-game Garden Of Good for the app last June in partnership with Feeding America, and is accessible to all US users over the age of 18. The description reads: “Garden of Good is centered around the education of food items that are most in-need at local food banks across the nation.” The platform worked with the nonprofit organization “to incorporate these insights and nutritional facts about these food items,” with it providing “real-time updates/progress in the fight to provide hunger relief.”

In other news, PUBG: Battlegrounds is getting an Assassin’s Creed crossover event next month.

Kate Moss wasn’t just naturally slender, she wasn’t fed | Kate Moss

The controversies and criticisms surrounding Kate Moss have often been unfair and highly contradictory (Take off your bra! Put on some weight! After decades of being talked down to, Kate Moss speaks out, 25 July). However, Zoe Williams’ assertion that Moss’s famously slender figure was “just the way she looks” is both inaccurate and unhelpful. Moss’s exact statement in the Desert Island Discs interview was “I was thin because I didn’t get fed at shoots or in shows and I’d always been thin”, which highlights the problems in the modeling industry and, therefore, the role of environmental factors.

This may not seem like an important distinction to make. But to people with eating disorders, or the millions of young girls who see these models and wonder why they can’t seem to achieve that ideal stick-figure, it is essential to show that this is not normal or healthy. At the height of her modeling career, Kate Moss had a BMI of around 15 to 16. This is well beneath the BMI of 17.5, which is considered anorexic. Even if Moss herself did not suffer from the disease, it is clearly not a healthy or natural weight to be – a BMI under 16 even indicates starvation by the World Health Organization’s standard. Countries such as France, Spain, Italy and Israel have laws banning ultra-thin models, in the latter case any below the minimum healthy BMI of 18.5. This is not to discriminate. It is simply meant to combat unhelpful beauty standards, the spread of eating disorders – and the physical and mental strain on the models themselves.

Fernando Alonso signs for Aston Martin in 2023, news, latest, Sebastian Vettel retirement, Formula One, Oscar Piastri

Fernando Alonso will join Aston Martin from 2023, clearing the way for Oscar Piastri to make his full-time debut next season.

Alonso made the shock announcement on Monday, confirming the switch on a multiyear deal starting in 2023.

The two-time champion said he was convinced the team, currently ninth in the standings with 20 points, less than half his own current tally, was capable of success during his contract term.

“This Aston Martin team is clearly applying the energy and commitment to win, and it is therefore one of the most exciting teams in Formula 1 today,” he said. “I have known Lawrence [Stroll] and Lance [Stroll] for many years and it is very obvious that they have the ambition and passion to succeed in Formula 1.

“I have watched as the team has systematically attracted great people with winning pedigrees, and I have become aware of the huge commitment to new facilities and resources at Silverstone.

“No-one in Formula 1 today is demonstrating a greater vision and absolute commitment to winning, and that makes it a really exciting opportunity for me.”

Alonso had signaled he wanted to stay with Alpine for at least two more seasons, but the French team was reportedly prepared to offer him only one more year before shifting his to sportscars to avoid losing Aussie junior Piastri to a rival constructor.

The Spaniard, who said he returned to the sport last year to fight for a third championship, said he wasn’t prepared to give up on his long-held goal.

“I still have the hunger and ambition to fight to be at the front, and I want to be part of an organization that is committed to learn, develop and succeed,” he said. “I intend to win again in this sport and therefore I have to take the opportunities that feel right to me.”

His defection paves the way for Aussie young gun Oscar Piastri to be promoted to his seat alongside Esteban Ocon next year.

Piastri will be the second full-time Australian driver on the grid alongside Daniel Ricciardo.

The team has been agonizing over Alonso’s future knowing that the Mark Webber-led Piastri was determined to see the reining F2 champion in a competitive seat as early as possible.

As recently as last week the team was talking publicly about loaning Piastri, most likely to backmarking the Williams team. Webber was meanwhile rumored to be attempting to engineer a switch to Ricciardo’s McLaren seat despite the senior Aussie being under contract.

Alpine is yet to comment on Alonso’s announcement.

Leclerc burnt by ANOTHER Ferrari blunder | 01:14

Aston Martin team owner Lawrence Stroll said Alonso’s signature was a vote of confidence in his team’s plans to move forward on the grid.

“I have known and admired Fernando for many years and it has always been clear that he is a committed winner like me,” he said. “I have set out to bring together the best people and develop the right resources and organization to succeed in this highly competitive sport, and those plans are now taking shape at Silverstone.

“It seemed natural therefore to invite Fernando to be part of the development of a winning team, and we very quickly established in our recent conversations that we have the same ambitions and values, and it was logical and easy to confirm our desire to work together. .”

Alonso is replacing four-time champion Sebastian Vettel, who announced his end-of-year retirement from the sport last week.

Desperation over money led to brutal 1995 murder, court hears

Desperation over money and the claimed theft of $1000 led to the brutal murder of Hasan Dastan in 1995, at sydney jury has been told.
The body of 52-year-old Hasan Dastan was found inside a workshop (Supplied)

Dastan was found dead in a pool of blood at his Esy Auto Dismantlers business on Monday December 11, 1995 after being bludgeoned with a heavy object.

“The deceased was located in his workshop where he had been subjected to a severe attack to his head, face and body,” crown prosecutor Brett Hatfield said on Monday.

A metal pipe was found in Dastan’s mouth, a sledgehammer lay nearby and a bloodstained note with a partial footprint lay close to the body, the NSW Supreme Court jury heard.

Dastan’s employee Kubilay Kilincer was a suspect in the initial 1995 police murder investigation but was not charged until 2020 after detectives took over the unsolved homicide case two years earlier.

Kilincer was accused of murdering his Fairfield Heights employer but has pleaded not guilty.

On Monday, Hatfield said Kilincer frequently asked to borrow money from members of the Turkish community in Sydney.

“The deceased was aware of this and often would complain about it and tell people not to loan the accused money,” the barrister said.

These financial requests allegedly included $500 that was desperately and urgently needed for a friend and $1200 required to secure a housing commission home.

Kilincer was accused of stealing around $1000 paid by a customer picking up their Ford Laser hatchback at the Blacktown business a few days before the alleged murder.

Kubilay Kilincer was named as a “main suspect” in a coronial inquest into Mr Dastan’s death in 2000, but he was never charged. (9News)

With Dastan suspecting Kilincer had been pilfering money from his business, he was on the verge of firing him when the murder occurred, the jury was told.

The eight-week trial in front of Justice Helen Wilson continues.

All-clear given after suspicious package forces evacuations of ticket counters in Terminal 3 at LAX

Traffic was backed up at LAX and Terminal 3 was largely shut down after a suspicious package was found Sunday night.

The package was reported at about 10 pm, and passengers and employees have been removed from the ticketing area of Terminal 3, an LAX spokesperson said.

By about 11:45 pm, the airport was given the all-clear.

“Police have determined it is safe to open Terminal 3 and traffic will begin moving on the upper level shortly. Thank you for your patience as safety is our first priority,” LAX said on Twitter.

During the investigation, the airport urged travelers to allow for delays.

“Traffic coming into the airport is slow and backed up due to the police activity on the upper level. Please allow extra time to get to the airport,” LAX said on Twitter.

The airport also suggested “using the lower level during this time if dropping off or picking up.”

“Traffic coming into the airport on the upper level is being diverted near Terminal 1 so please use the lower level for much faster access. Traffic is very heavy along major access routes so please allow extra time to reach the terminal area,” the airport added.

Real estate: Property investment firm under fire for ‘cringe’ email celebrating rising rent repayments

A property manager has come under fire after appearing to boast about upping rent in an email to tenants.

Property investment firm Ironfish sent an email to its customers last week stating the highest weekly increase and average rent increase in Melbourne in June.

“Achievement in June: Biggest rent increase – $225 per week,” the email states, before adding that the company leased 1,103 properties in the last financial year.

The email also includes two references, one from a landlord and another from a renter, which suggests there was no target demographic for the email.

A renter who received the email posted a screenshot to reddit, with the caption: “My rent just went up $400 a month and the agency sent me an email bragging about it.”

The email is accompanied with a photo of two young children jumping on a bed, having a pillow fight with smiles on their faces.

It’s caused a stir online, with both tenants and landlords disapproving of the email, and many left shocked after reading its contents.

“As an owner and provider that’s cringe. If my real estate (agent) boasted like that I’d be out,” one user said.

“I received the same email and had the same disgusted feeling, and I’m an owner (just not with them),” said another.

“That’s just disgusting. They are literally celebrating ripping off desperate people. It’s just deplorable,” a third commented.

Meanwhile others have raised concerns about how much the rent had increased by.

“Can they actually do that large an increase? I mean legally? What do they have in your lease on how it’s calculated? Fairly sure Tenants Victoria may have a bit more to say about it,” one user commented.

“How can a $225 rent increase be justified?” another user questioned. “Heck, even $98 is a lot.”

“So nuts. Ours tried to raise it by $90 a month which I thought was ridiculous and we just said no and they agreed to stay the same if we signed a 12-month lease,” another said.

News.com.au has contacted Ironfish for comment on the email.

According to Consumer Affairs Victoria, landlords are not allowed to increase rent during a fixed-term agreement unless stated otherwise, and have to give tenants at least 60 days’ notice.

The law doesn’t state how much a landlord can increase weekly repayments by however it should be changed in line with the consumer price index, average rent prices, by a fixed percentage or by a fixed dollar amount.

Renters also have the right to challenge their increase if they believe their repayments have been raised too high.

Despite the sharp increase stated in the email, data from CoreLogic suggests Melbourne has the cheapest rental market with a typical home costing a renter $480 a week.

The rising cost of living, low vacancy rates and increasing interest rates are some of the reasons why landlords are choosing to hike weekly rent repayments.
