Here’s what Sony, Ubisoft, WB, Riot and others think of Microsoft’s Activision Blizzard deal

We’re over six months on from Microsoft announcing plans to acquire Activision Blizzard, kicking off the lengthy process of gaining approvals from anti-trust organizations across the world. Most of the time, these investigations are highly secretive, but we do know that they involve seeking opinions from competing companies across the industry. Now thanks to recent filings in Brazil, documents containing these opinions have been posted online, giving us insight into what the likes of Sony, Ubisoft, WB and others think of the deal.

Recently, Brazil’s administration has been seeking feedback on the deal and posted documents online, giving us a look at what major publishers across the industry think of the impending merger. The list of companies included includes major rival console, Sony, as well as game publishers like Ubisoft, WB and Riot Games. Tech companies with an interest in the gaming market, like Google and Apple, were also contacted. Resetera user, Idas, discovered the filings on Brazil’s government website, and while much of the documents contain redacted information, we do get a good idea of where the industry stands on the deal.

Sony naturally has the most to say, as it competes with Microsoft on both the console hardware front and the software front. As we all know, great software can give a hardware platform an advantage over another. Sony points out that while it is possible for almost anyone to make and release a game nowadays, there are just a handful of developers capable of producing AAA titles. Sony also adds that it would be very difficult for another company to create a franchise to rival Call of Duty and that the IP is powerful enough to influence a consumer’s console choice.

Sony also estimates that Xbox Game Pass has captured up to 70 percent of the global subscription services market, and that it would take several years and a lot of investment to create a true competitor. There are concerns that the lower cost of a subscription will lead to upfront sales for games and will create a difficult competitive environment for developers who choose to release their game for an upfront fee, rather than packing it in a subscription.

WB, which has been toying with the idea of selling off its gaming division, is of the opinion that the industry has plenty of competition and adds that the industry does not have a high barrier for entry for developers to release software. Ubisoft is in a similar boat, saying that there are alternatives to Activision Blizzard games and putting forward the opinion that there is plenty of competition in the industry.

Riot Games and Bandai Namco also both responded with answers that suggest both companies believe there are alternatives to Activision Blizzard titles and lots of competition across the market.

The major tech companies, like Apple, Amazon, Meta and Google did not respond with much and most of their answers were redacted. Ultimately, none of them seem to have any interest in stopping the acquisition and acknowledge the distinction between the mobile games market and console/PC. However, Apple does seem to think that Apple Arcade is a competitor in the wider gaming market.

KitGuru Says: It doesn’t sound like there is much opposition to the acquisition amongst established publishers. Still, regulators like the FTC and the European Commission may have concerns and still need to finalize their own investigations into the acquisition.

Cristiano Ronaldo leaves Old Trafford before final whistle of Manchester United draw

Cristiano Ronaldo left the stadium before the end of Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Rayo Vallecano after being substituted at half-time.

Ronaldo, 37, made his comeback against the Spanish side after missing United’s tour of Thailand and Australia to deal with a family issue.

– ESPN+ viewers’ guide: LaLiga, Bundesliga, MLS, FA Cup, more

I have started the game before being replaced after the first 45 minutes. He was pictured leaving Old Trafford before the final whistle, with United sources afterward refusing to comment on whether his early exit from him was sanctioned by manager Erik ten Hag.

Ronaldo is keen to leave the club this summer in a bid to find regular Champions League football elsewhere. He has been linked with moves to Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Atletico Madrid, although sources have told ESPN that United are yet to receive a serious offer for the Portugal forward.

Sources have told ESPN that Ten Hag encouraged the squad members who played against Atletico Madrid 24 hours earlier to attend the friendly against Rayo.

Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Scott McTominay were among the players who watched from the directors’ box while others were in hospitality boxes. They looked on as Ronaldo’s replacement, Amad, opened the scoring for United early in the second half before Alvaro Garcia equalized for the visitors soon afterwards as United ended their preseason campaign with three wins, two draws and a defeat from their six games.

“Overall, I am happy, we made a good preseason,” Ten Hag said. “We make good progress and we’re ready for the season, but still I know there is a lot of room for improvement and we have to improve.

“It’s also a process that continues during the season, but for next week it’s about a result as well. The reception was fantastic. I felt the vibe in the stadium, I felt the vibe they want to send to the team.

“There has to be co-operation between fans and the team so we get the right emotion and, especially, the right results.”

Aboriginal staff laid off, youth left in limbo as ‘inspirational’ center abruptly closed

Young Aboriginal staff are being offered “small amounts” of money to leave their roles quietly, after a decision by owners to shut down operations at Redfern’s National Center of Indigenous Excellence.

The property, which has operated on George Street for 16 years, is currently owned by the NSW Aboriginal Land Council (NSWALC) after it was transferred from the Commonwealth’s Indigenous Land and Sea Corporation (ILSC) on June 30. The ILSC is still in charge of running operations at the site.

Services at the fitness and aquatic centers are set to stop on the 8th of August, with all staff notified on Monday morning.

Former NRL star Dean Widders told NITV News he got an anxious phone call from his son, Dean Jnr, an employee of the Centre, after he received the news.

“He just got called into a meeting without any notice, any explanation, to say that his job is going to be gone in five days and he’s not gonna have any work. He has to find out how he’s going to survive for the next few months,” he said.

Speaking from outside the Centre, Widders described how busloads of children were turning up to the NCIE for their afternoon programs only to be met with locked gates.

“Their hearts are broken,” he said.

It’s not just about paychecks, it’s a place of inspiration and building aspirations.

“Changing the ripple effect of how this community works in a positive direction. That’s the big loss out of this.”

NCIE youth

Gomeroi and Wiradjuri woman Margaret Haumono, co-founder and CEO of non for profit Redfern Youth Connect, posted a video on the group’s Instagram page from the scene.

“A lot of the young Aboriginal kids were quite distressed this morning,” she told NITV News.

“They’ve been told to sign non-disclosure agreements. They’ve also been given a small amount to actually be redundant from their jobs as well. And I was quite distressing to walk into that.”

Dean Widders said a parting offer of $500 was a slap in the face for his son.

“That was to say ‘keep your mouth shut, go away silently’. That was a bit of an insult to him, to say this is what your livelihood is worth,” he said.

Natascha Haupt, who works admin at NCIE, said not one member of staff was aware of the shutdown.

“There was no community consultation, no talks with anyone about this. It’s disrespectful,” she told NITV News.

“They’re basically closing down the centre, they gave us a letter that was stating the money they would give us depending on our salary, how long we’ve been there, how many hours we did – paying us out basically.

“But it isn’t enough to survive. One of the boys would get $700, that won’t even make the next rent.”

NCIE

‘They’ve insulted us’

Prominent Redfern community man Shane Phillips, who is a regular user of the Center and has been invested since its inception, said he was devastated by the news.

“It took us from, and I know this sounds bad, but it took us from getting on the charge and the streets being all over the place to a place where we could see our own strength,” he told NITV News.

“There are Elders there and there are families and I am gutted myself. If they stopped this now, without thinking about this properly, I can’t even imagine some of the crazy shit that could happen here.”

Mr Phillips said the communication from the ILSC has been “really poor” throughout the process and that community members felt “insulted.”

“They’re not interested in that social cost and the benefits of it… they’re just all about the numbers and I’m really saddened,” he said.

“They just thought it was beyond our people to be able to think about a model that could work socially and commercially. And that is how they’ve insulted us.”

Shane Phillips

‘Worked together in good faith’: ILSC & NSWALC

Ms Haumono said it was a surprise following a meeting with the NSWALC on Tuesday.

“They assured us there would be a three-year waiting process and then an EOI would go out for the fitness and aquatic center and the community would get the first option at the tender,” she said.

“This completely came out of the blue.”

In a statement, the NSWALC said they will be seeking new management for the centre.

“We will be opening a process to secure a suitable third-party to manage the fitness and aquatic center on the site,” said NSWALC’s Chairperson Danny Chapman.

“The process will be open to both community and industry to apply.”

Today’s events come after both ILSC and NSWALC could not come to negotiate a mutual agreement about the business.

Both ILSC CEO Joseph Morrison and NSWALC CEO Yuseph Deen said, in a joint statement, that both organizations “worked together in good faith” to try and secure NCIE’s future.

“Unfortunately, we have not been able to reach agreement on terms for ongoing support of the organization and as a result, it will close. We are disappointed by the outcome and will work to support affected staff and community.”

NCIE

‘We will fight’

For one of the young people outside of NCIE this afternoon, today signals the end of a long journey.

“I’ve been here for about half my life, since I was nine-years-old,” they said.

“I’ve been coming here every single day after school, so it’s going to be a big change.

Saying that NCIE was a “safe place” for them and their friends to come together, the youth told NITV News that things won’t be the same in the suburb if the space changed.

“I feel like this is kind of like a special spot for us because it’s somewhere can just come,” they said.

“It’s a place that we all rely on, like something we can always go back to. So, just like can’t even imagine the notion of it not being there anymore.”

Shane Phillips and members of the community have planned to turn up again on Tuesday at 1pm to protest.

“I will shackle myself to that fence. If they try and go do it the wrong way without the community being involved,” he said.

“Let them see what happens this time we will fight hard.”

University of West Georgia professor charged with murder in 18-year-old’s death

A now-fired professor at the University of West Georgia has been accused of fatally shooting an 18-year-old woman, officials said.

Richard Sigman, 47, was arrested and charged with murder shortly after Anne Jones, 18, died after being shot in a parking deck in Carrollton, Georgia on Saturday, the Carrollton Police Department said.

Police said the officers were initially called to the Tanner Medical Center in Carrollton at around 12:30 am over reports of a woman who had been shot.

Jones was pronounced dead at the medical center and Sigman was arrested and charged with murder, three counts of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of crime, police said.

Callers told police that the incident unfolded off Adamson Square in a courthouse parking deck after Sigman got into a verbal altercation with another man at Leopoldo’s, a popular pizzeria in the square.

Police said the other man was alleged to have told at least one security guard that Sigman had threatened to shoot him. When security approached Sigman, they saw that he had a weapon and ordered him to leave.

Sigman left and began walking to the parking deck, where he began shooting into a parked vehicle, striking Jones, police said.

“Friends immediately drove her to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead,” police said.

In a statement provided to WXIA, an NBC affiliate based in Atlanta, a spokesperson for the University of West Georgia said Sigman was fired on Saturday.

“On behalf of the university, we wish to convey our deepest condolences to Anna’s family and many friends,” said Dr. Brendan Kelly, UWG’s president, in a statement shared with WXIA.

“We know this news is difficult to process and affects many members of our university community. We ask that you keep Anna’s family, friends, and all who have been touched by this tragedy in your thoughts during this tremendously difficult time,” the statement said.

The university did not immediately respond to a request for comment from NBC News. A webpage listing the school’s faculty with the Department of Management in the Richards College of Business had as recently as last month named “Rick Sigman” as a lecturer at the school. His profile of him has since been removed from the page.

According to WXIA, Jones had been enrolled to attend UWG in the fall, but police said she was not one of Sigman’s students, according to the outlet.

The teen had recently graduated from Mount Zion High School, according to a statement posted on social media by school leaders.

“Anna loved this school and this community and she will be missed dearly by many,” the statement said, sharing a link to a GoFundMe page set up to help cover funeral costs. As of early Monday, more than $17,800 had been raised.

Disney’s New Free-To-Play Racer Wants To Be Distinct From Mario Kart With “Combat Racing”

Disney Speedstorm Mickey Mouse
Image: Gameloft

Gameloft’s free-to-play racing game Disney Speedstorm has already been compared to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe numerous times. With its character-focused racing and themed tracks, it was inevitable — especially on the Switch! But, in an interview with Nintendo Everything, the developer is keen to set out what makes this title stand out from Nintendo’s juggernaut kart racer.

While Mario Kart 8 has different types of karts, stats, and even racer weights, Disney Speedstorm will have four different classes. When asked about what makes this game “stand out”, Gameloft Barcelona’s game manager — Aska Suzuki — put forward this unique element first:

“In Disney Speedstorm, characters aren’t just broken up by general types. We’ve given them one of four classes: Speedster, Brawler, Trickster, and Defender to support the strong combat racing element to this game. Boost management is really important , and each class builds extra boost in different ways, such as a brawler gaining more boost through stunning other racers, or a speedster gaining extra boost by going across boost pads. This provides the opportunity for very strategic racing if players wish to race that way .”

The class doesn’t just change how the character races, but it also affects how you get extra boosts, which adds an extra layer of strategy to the game! It sounds like a really interesting difference, especially with the focus on “combat” and confrontation. So we’ll be racing against all of our least-favorite Disney characters so we can justify ramming into them on the race track, then!

But that’s not the only unique element. Suzuki went on to explain what other differences classes bring to the table:

“Additionally, individual characters don’t just have special abilities, but they are pre-loaded with specific power-ups, so a trickster character will be more inclined to get items that negatively impact other racers, or a defender might get more defensive items On top of that, each power-up can be charged in order to perform a different action! More than any other racing game I can think of, character choice in Disney Speedstorm is closer to picking a character in a MOBA game.”

This element of the game is similar to Mario Kart Double Dash!!, but instead of just having unique abilities, they’re also more likely to get items that fit their playstyles. What items and skills these are, we don’t know yet, but it looks like character selection will be going beyond simply picking your favorite Disney and Pixar character.

Of course, Disney Speedstorm is a live service game with seasonal content, and Suzuki outlined a few things that will be added to the game once it’s out:

“…players will have access to regular new content via updates and season passes. New Disney and Pixar racers will be added regularly to Disney Speedstorm, bringing special skills for you to master (or overcome) and unique tracks to pump fresh strategy into the mix. Support crew characters, environments, customization options, and collectibles will also drop in regularly, so there’s always more to experience.”

This is certainly something that sets the game apart from Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which many might be worried about. However, despite there being special events and Season Passes, Suzuki reiterated that “all characters can be unlocked through gameplay”, while also finding items to help level up their chosen character.

There will be specific events focused on a single Disney or Pixar film, or other ones focused on certain characters. So Gameloft is planning to go all out on the game.

Disney Speedstorm is due out sometime this summer. We’ll let you know as soon as we have an official release date. Have you decided on whether you’ll be downloading the game? Do you think the combat racing elements will make this one stand out? Let us know down below!

Beauty and the Geek Australia 2022: Four more Geek makeovers

Beauty and the Geek’s four remaining ‘Geeks’ underwent their makeovers during Monday’s episode of the reality series – and one got an instant tick of approval from his ‘Beauty’, who leapt into his arms for a lingering kiss.

Check out the impressive makeovers below…

Jason

Victorian muso Jason, 29, had perhaps the night’s biggest transformation, losing his shaggy hair and beard – and stepping out with a discernible new air of confidence and even a few male-model poses.

He said he’d changed a lot since the show started, explaining that on his first day, he could “barely muster standing within 20m of the Beauties.”

Jason came out to wild reactions from the rest of the contestants, one of whom summed up the mood by saying: “Who the hell IS that?”

The Beauty he’d been paired with, Emily, could not stop screaming.

“When I saw myself in the mirror, I didn’t recognize myself. I saw someone new…almost like a long-lost brother or something. It was really wild to see myself like that,” Jason said.

“I feel like a weight has been lifted off me. Something as simple as not having beard hair to fiddle with or hair on my face to block my view of things is tremendously powerful for my confidence.”

Aaron

NSW train driver Aaron said he had come “so, so far” on the show, listing a few of his “firsts”.

“I’ve conquered my fear of dogs, jumped off a train through a firewall, posed with my shirt off and grown so much. I’ve changed so much through this experience,” he said.

Emerging post-makeover with a new haircut and outfit, Aaron said he felt “so, so happy… I’m ready to start living now.”

His Beauty Karly was full of praise, dubbing him her “sexy Aaron-cini ball.”

anthony

A self-proclaimed Harry Potter superfan, 26-year-old Anthony suffered bullying at high school and had never quite built his self-confidence after that trauma.

So it’s understandable that his makeover was an emotional experience – he shed a tear or two when he first looked at himself in the mirror.

“It was very emotional,” he said. “It was like, ‘why can’t you love yourself? Why can’t you be proud of who you are?’”

Thankfully his Beauty Tegan was there to be his biggest cheerleader, dubbing the new-look Anthony “a bad boy rich sugar daddy.”

Michael

Fans who’ve been watching this season will know that 25-year-old children’s party entertainer Michael has already developed quite the connection with his Beauty, Tara.

Even so, it was a shock when the new-look Michael stepped out – and an overwhelmed Tara immediately ran into his arms to give him a long, lingering kiss on the lips.

For Michael, it was the dream outcome.

“That was so romantic. I have dreamt of a moment like that. I really felt, really happy… very wanted. I didn’t know she could move that fast in heels!” he said.

Tara couldn’t hide her excitement at the new-look Michael.

“Obviously I fell for you before (the makeover) but this is a cherry on top – I’m not complaining,” she said.

“A sexy bonus?” asked host Sophie Monk.

“I’m glad to be your sexy bonus,” said Michael.

After that loved-up moment, it was a bittersweet end to the episode, as Jason and Emily were eliminated from the competition.

The four makeovers came after fellow contestant Christopher underwent his big transformation last week.

Brownlow Medalist calls out “over the top” reaction to Blues’ loss

1988 Brownlow Medalist Gerard Healy believes the reaction to Carlton’s Round 20 loss has been “over the top”.

The Blues lost to Adelaide by 29-points and were comprehensively outplayed by a tougher, harder Crows outfit at Adelaide Oval. Michael Voss’ men had their chance to cement a top eight spot with a win, but will now almost certainly need a triumph in their remaining three games if they are to play finals.

That may be easier said than done, given their opponents, Brisbane, Melbourne and Collingwood, are all ahead of them on the ladder.

However, Healy called on Blues supporters to stop the negativity, saying he’s still “glass three quarters full” on the club.

“Yes, it was a horrible loss by the Blues on the weekend, but the negative reaction to it has been over the top,” he said on sports day.

“It seems Blues fans, or many of them, want to death-march their team to ninth on the ladder, despite being so good for most of the year and doing so with a lot of injuries.

“I reckon the team is entitled to a mulligan and they got it on the weekend, and (they’re also entitled to) a bit more belief from those who have already written them off.

“It’s been a tough journey over the last 10 years for Blues fans and they’re getting used to disappointment too much, but I wouldn’t be writing them off just at the present time.”

The Blues have built a brand based on pressure, but the Crows winning the contested ball count was always going to leave the visitors up against it.

Healy believes the potential reintroduction of midfielder George Hewett will be a big benefit in Round 21 given he’s missed the last two games with back soreness.

The Sydney Hall of Famer also suggested Harry McKay – who’s kicked three goals across the last three weeks – needed to lift, while further labeling the decision to drop Jack Silvagni for the clash a failed experiment.

“The Blues’ best is still very much top end, but to achieve it they have to get back to winning the contest, and to that matter, get George Hewett back in the middle, (who was) sadly missed on the weekend,” Healy continued.

“Get Harry McKay back in form, and Harry needs to start taking more contested marks in one-on-one battles, which currently is running at about 1 in 20. For someone so big, athletic and gifted, that’s nowhere near good enough, but in other ways, it’s an area to get excited about, because he can get much, much better come the finals, in fact over the next few weeks.

“The rucks, well it’s an issue, and you’ll need more than one poor match to determine the outcome, but from what I’ve seen over the year, Silvagni’s impact in the forward line should not be dismissed lightly and I’m sure it hasn’t been Michael Voss and co.

“It was an experiment that didn’t work, it’s probably going to get another run or two, but I reckon Silvgani will play a big role in the final month of the year.

“So much to think about for Michael Voss, but at this stage, it’s still glass three quarters full for me for the Blues, not the totally empty schooner or pot too many Carlton fans appear to be drinking from this weekend.”

Richmond and St Kilda both kept their final chances alive with wins over the weekend, meaning there are still 10 clubs with genuine chances to be there in September.
