League MMO executive producer: ‘We will do big announcements and answer big questions when we have more confidence’

Development of a League of Legends MMORPG has been kept under wraps since its soft announcement last year. The team working on the project at Riot Games has made no official reveal for the game and its development is still largely in the preliminary stages.

With the development (and mere existence) of the project in question due to a lack of announcements or reveals, the MMO’s head developer and executive producer Greg “Ghostcrawler” Street answered one of the team’s most frequently asked questions on Twitter earlier today: Why was the “announcement” for the League MMO is unconventional?

“We thought it made sense to low key announce to help with recruiting (we need a lot of MMO vets), to excite players, and because we thought it would likely leak anyway,” Street said in a thread of tweets earlier today. “Often in this business, you worry about someone scooping you, but that is harder to do with an MMO. Everyone more or less knows how to make one. The challenge is actually doing so, and the massive cost and time it takes.”

Despite the fact that the game was confirmed to be in development in 2020, there has been no major announcement from Riot regarding the League MMO and most fans have been receiving news of the project through Street’s Twitter feed over the course of the last year-plus. Through social media, Street has been asking League fans (as well as fans of the MMO genre) for feedback and input on the development process, inquiring with prospective players on what they’d like to potentially see in the game.

Related: 5 things we want to see in a League of Legends MMORPG

One of the biggest issues League MMO’s development team has come in contact with has been the challenge of keeping potential players interested in the game and its development cycle. Since the game is still so far out from its release date, keeping fans tuned in is a difficult process. “It’s hard to keep players engaged and excited for years,” Street said. “They might get impatient with the trickle of information, or even worse, interpret the normal rate of development as something gone wrong.”

Earlier this year, Street threw fans into a state of questioning when he mentioned the possibility of the game not even being released at all. “I am just being honest that Riot’s game standards are high, and so are the expectations of players. [What I mean is] we won’t ship a disappointing game,” Street said in April.

Image via Riot Games

Today, Street confirmed that “more confidence” is needed in the product for an official announcement or reveal to come forth. “We will do big announcements and answer big questions when we have more confidence that the direction will stick,” Street said. “We don’t need 100% confidence. But we need more than we have today.”

Street also left the door open for “massive pivots” in the development process, if needed, saying today that delaying the game would not be out of the question if the team felt it was necessary.

And although the future of the League MMO remains in question—largely considering the fact that the game hasn’t even been officially announced—there’s still a heavy chance Riot dedicates itself to the title. the League MMO, in spite of secrecy and seclusion from the public eye, has been one of the most talked-about games in the developer’s history. The creation of the League Universe site in 2019 opened up all of Runeterra to speculation from players and fans, while the release of the League-based animated series Arcane in 2021 proved just how far Riot is willing to go with its intellectual property.

fans of the League franchise and potential MMO players can look forward to further updates from Street and the rest of the development team in the future. In his thread of tweets posted today, Street, a self-proclaimed “huge believer in communicating to players,” vowed that the League MMO team will put forth “engineers, artists, producers, writers, audio, voice actors, QA, community, [and] basically anyone who is interested in doing so” to speak to players about the game and its development cycle.

The upcoming League MMO does not currently have a release date, although fans should expect it to come sometime later down the line since production is still in its very early stages.

The billion-dollar TV war between House of the Dragon, The Rings of Power, The Sandman and Andor

An epic battle is about to be waged and it’s not between warring houses or mythical creatures.

It’s the fight between mega TV franchises, and it’s going to mean a very exhausting few months for audiences who are being asked to deeply invest in not one but four huge genre series, which between them have cost something in the region of a billion dollars.

The main event is the showdown between a game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragongo to Lord of the Rings prequel, The Rings of Power.

And if you think the media are hyping up this TV war, consider this: at this time last year, Amazon announced it would premiere The Rings of Power on September 2, 2022. It gave everyone 13 months’ notice. Then HBO swooped in and picked August 21 as the date for House of the Dragonas though spoiling for a fight.

The two shows will air their finals in the same week. That’s a deliberate choice – and not everyone may emerge victorious. It’s going to be a sh**fight.

It’s like if Marvel and Warner Bros decided to release an Avengers and Justice League movie on the same day.

Both shows are gambling huge money on the pulling power of two established brands with rusted-on fans. But will audiences commit to two very demanding, complex fantasy shows?

Or will fans decide they prefer elves over dragons, or scheming royals over the rise of Sauron, and reserve the other little time they have every week for something entirely different, maybe a workplace comedy? Each series is wooing the same pool of fans.

The fact they both happen to be high fantasy shows would’ve been unthinkable 25 years ago, when the genre was considered a nerds-only niche.

And yet the biggest cultural flashpoints in this relatively young century have been fantasy ones. Harry Potter is a juggernaut of books, movies, theme parks, merchandise and stage shows. game of Thrones has dominated the TV zeitgeist in a way that nothing else has to the same degree of obsession, including The Sopranos and breaking bad.

Part of that is because game of Thrones came along at a time of increased online pop cultural discourse, when TV recaps and Reddit were on the rise, which fueled the level of fervor around the show. The series spawned an online industry.

But it’s also because fantasy epics are now mainstream and every studio and streamer wants one, or two or three or four or five. And they’re willing to pay for it.

The Rings of Power has the honor of being the most expensive TV series ever made. In addition to the $US250 million Amazon paid for the rights to JRR Tolkien’s Second Age, the production budget was reportedly $US465 million. At eight episodes, that’s $US58 million per episode.

Keep in mind that The Rings of Power doesn’t have any big name actors who would be commanding large paycheques, so that money is going almost entirely into the production, splashing big on the world-building.

When that first trailer dropped during Comic-Con, you couldn’t argue that it didn’t at least look spectacular.

House of the Dragonwhich will stream in Australia on Binge and Foxtel*, is comparatively paltry, coming in between $US150 million to $US200 million for the 10-episode season, which equates to under $US20 million per episode.

Fantasy shows don’t come cheap, especially when there are 17 dragons involved.

In the middle of all this are two scrappier though no less ambitious contenders in the wings, The Sandmana long-awaited adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s legendary comics, and Andorto Star Wars streaming series.

Such is the insanely timed state of things that a Star Wars TV show is not even the second most anticipated upcoming streaming series.

Which is probably why this morning Disney blinked, saw the unhinged landscape and went, “Yeah, nah, we don’t want in on that,” and pushed Andor‘s release by three weeks into late September. Wise choice.

disney would have done Andor no favors if it had kept its original August 31 premiere date, sandwiched between House of the Dragon and The Rings of Power. It’s not high fantasy but sci-fi is a very close genre cousin.

By moving it to September 21, Andor will drop three episodes at once and it’ll have a bit of clear air. Disney will be hoping that fans will have made their House of the Dragon and The Rings of Power choices and settled in, ready to consider a third option.

And Netflix also has a horse in the race, The Sandmanwhich is releasing on August 5. Netflix would be hoping that The Sandman is releasing early enough to avoid the main fray.

The Sandman is a high-stakes story about Dream, the being responsible for our subconscious state, who is captured and held captive for a century, unleashing chaos across the realms.

It’s not the most accessible narrative and the title has been in various stages of production since the 1990s, having landed across the desks of several filmmakers and onscreen talent, including Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Roger Avary and Terry Gilliam.

It’s only now, after the runaway commercial successes of Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogies and the original game of Thrones series that TV executives even have the confidence to greenlight and fund a show based on a relatively esoteric comic series. The Sandman reportedly cost $US165 million to make.

Decision-makers have witnessed the appetite for genre art and they want to tap into that audience desire by throwing lots and lots of money behind these works.

Everyone is trying to find the next game of Thronesincluding game of Thrones. HBO is feverishly hoping House of the Dragon will be able to recapture the same obsessive fandom as the original series.

of course, game of Thrones only happened because of Jackson’s Lord of the Rings.

Like Jaime and Cersei, it’s all very incestuous. Also like Jaime and Cersei, everyone is about to head into battle. Wonder whose head is going to be crushed by a caving ceiling.

The Sandman is on Netflix from August 5, House of the Dragon is on Binge and Foxtel from August 21, The Rings of Power is on Amazon Prime Video from September 2 and Andor is on Disney+ from September 21.

Australia is set for wet spring after negative Indian Ocean Dipole declared

Wet weather is set to continue into spring across parts of Australia.

The Bureau of Meteorology today reported a negative Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) is underway, which means Australia looks set for a wetter-than-average season for much of southern and eastern Australia.

The IOD is also expected to bring warmer days than usual in northern Australia.

Head of long-range forecasting Dr Andrew Watkins said the Bureau’s three-month climate outlook is for above average rainfall for much of Australia, particularly for the central and eastern states.

“With wet soils, high rivers and full dams, and the outlook for above average rainfall, elevated flood risk remains for eastern Australia,” he said.

All climate model outlooks surveyed indicate that negative IOD conditions are likely to continue into late spring, the BoM said in its latest climate driver update.

According to Weatherzone’s Ben Domensino, it is the first time there have been negative IODs in consecutive years since records began in the 1960s.

The BoM said there’s still a 50 per cent chance of a La Nina weather system forming later in the year.

Eight shot in Detroit dispute over parking: ‘It’s blood everywhere’

Sofhia Steen was surrounded by chaos, but she couldn’t move from her front porch.

“I’m still standing there as the bullets fly by me. It’s blood everywhere. It’s bullets everywhere. I couldn’t move,” Steen said. “Everyone around me was running, hiding.”

Steen was at her home on Coyle Street with family, celebrating her sister’s birthday Saturday night and into the early hours of Sunday. They had a great time, Steen said — until the gunfire started.

“This has scarred me for the rest of my life,” Steen told the Free Press outside of her west-side home Monday.

Detroit resident Sofhia Steen, 34, talks about a shooting that killed two people and injured six, including several of her family members while they were celebrating her sister's birthday at her home on Coyle Avenue near Plymouth Road in Detroit on Monday, Aug. 1, 2022. “It feels so heavy in there – my cousin is still cleaning up blood,” said Steen. “I haven't slept since it's happened. Every time I close my eyes I see everything.”

Two people were killed and six others injured when a gunman with a high-powered weapon opened fire, apparently over a parking dispute, according to police and witness accounts.

“I haven’t slept since it happened,” Steen. “Every time I close my eyes… I see everything.”

The shooting suspect lives right across from Steen on Coyle Street, according to police.

Gail Beamon, who lives next door to the suspect, said the two people killed were close friends of her children. The pair weren’t there for the party across the street, Beamon said. They were at her home of her visiting her children of her when the suspect got into an argument with them about where they had parked — near his driveway of her.

Melbourne councils push for kerbside electric vehicle charging

“People are doing this stuff already. It would be much better if the council fixed the underlying problem and allowed them [electric car owners] to do it in a safe way.”

Councilor Jolly referred to similar trials being undertaken by local councils in the UK, where shallow trenches are dug into the footpath to embed charging cables or chargers are installed in street lights.

The kerb model would only be for residents who live in detached homes and those who had paid for a charger would not have ownership of the car spot next to the charger, as it remained on public land.

But despite these issues, Jolly said he believed the move could be a “small, worthwhile addition to the fight against climate change and encourage electric vehicle use”.

If the Yarra council agrees to a motion on Tuesday night, a report with various options would be created by council staff and presented at a later date for a decision.

loading

A similar motion will also be considered at a Hobsons Bay City Council meeting next Tuesday.

Independent Hobsons Bay councilor Daria Kellander, who is bringing the motion, said she had also been contacted by a resident who canceled an order for an electric car because of the lack of charging facilities in the area.

“When we look at our municipality, we only have three public electric vehicle chargers in an area with 100,000 residents and one has been down [out of order] for a number of months,” she said.

“Governments are implementing planning changes for future developments, but no one has looked at the legacy [residential] issues and that’s something that needs to be addressed.”

Melbourne company Kerb Charge is partnering with Port Phillip Council for its trial, which was greenlit in September last year. The first charger will be installed this month.

A pilot scheme in Central Bedfordshire Council in England allows electric vehicle owners to charge their cars on the street outside their homes with a charging cable embedded into the pavement.

Kerb Charge spokesman Rod Walker said the units to be placed next to residential street gutters were “about as tall as a Coke bottle and a bit wider in circumference”. The chargers can slide flat into the ground when not in use and can even be mowed over.

The most recent available data shows there were 10,311 electric vehicles registered in Victoria as of June 2021, up from 6749 the previous year.

Electric car chargers across the city have been plagued by ongoing faults and outages that providers have blamed on supply chain issues.

Tasmanian rural council’s $8.2m plan for agricultural town’s main street met with tractor protest

Historic charm and farming roots have coexisted in the northern Tasmanian town of Longford for decades, but a plan for the main street to be redeveloped and beautified has angered some within the community — culminating in tractors being driven into town in protest.

The works on a 600 meter stretch of Wellington Street, would see new garden beds and street furniture installed, and safety improvements for motorists and pedestrians.

Local veterinarian Michael Morris was one of a number of concerned community members who took to the street to protest against the project, which is expected to cost $8.2 million, paid for by the local council with around $2 million coming from the federal government.

He said the development is threatening Longford’s agricultural identity.

“I find it strange that a town like this, whose heart blood is the agricultural community, that you are going to put through an application like this that is essentially going to alienate the rural heartland,” he said.

“This is a strong rural community. This road is used by a heap of farm users, a lot of machinery, a lot of trucks. This development is going to make it extraordinarily difficult for that machinery and those trucks to navigate.”

Rob Bayles said he’d like the Northern Midlands Council to reconsider the design, and joined other farmers in a tractor conveyed down the main street.

“There is probably no other town in Tasmania that has more agricultural produce traveling down the main street from one end to the other, and here we are wanting to make the street narrower,” he said.

“Longford is an agricultural town and it needs to be open for traffic to get through it.”

Cyclists not happy either

The council received a number of representations from the public against the project, identifying 21 issues of concern.

According to the Council’s Heritage Advisor David Denman, the proposed design would not change the character of the town.

“The proposed roadworks and streetscape works are sympathetic with the existing historic streetscape elements and will therefore make a positive contribution to the overall street and townscape aesthetic,” he said.

Mr Morris, who is also a keen cyclist, said he had concerns about what the works meant for those riding through town.

“We have got a strong cycling community here in Longford and the reality is this development is going to narrow the effective roadway for us,” he said.

“At the moment, we’ve got room to cycle along between the park cars and the main thoroughfare, but if this goes through we will be out in the main thoroughfare.”

The council says “new protuberances” would come out no further than parked vehicles, but farmer Rob Bayles said the plan would “make it narrower in every spot”.(ABC News: Damian McIntyre)

Ebony Brooks, who works at JJ’s Bakery that’s on Wellington Street, said the street needed a revamp but wasn’t sold on the existing proposal.

“I have heard a lot of mixed reviews, both positive and negative,” she said.

“We are a rural town, every second or third vehicle is a tractor or truck, so it will affect them driving through.”

In a statement, Northern Midlands Mayor Mary Knowles said Wellington Street’s width would not be affected and the works would not impact on heavy vehicles and cyclists.

“The new protuberances at the intersections come out no further than the parked vehicles in the street,” she said.

“The protuberances will improve safety for all users. Particularly drivers of vehicles leaving side streets will have improved visibility when entering the main street; and safety will be increased for pedestrians traversing the roads.”

Mr Bayles disagreed.

“The system is not broken now, why does it need to be changed? There is room to pull off, there is room for trucks to get around corners, and they are just going to make it narrower in every spot.”

Council officers recommended the works be approved, but councilors voted to defer the decision until after it was considered by the Northern Midlands Bicycle Advisory Committee.

The works have been approved by the Department of State Growth.

Georgia offers guidance on how to claim an embryo deduction on state taxes

Once fetal cardiac activity is detected, the law allows expectant mothers to file for child support to cover the costs of pregnancy and delivery, and it requires state officials to count an unborn child toward Georgia’s population in census counts. It also expands the definition of “natural person” to “any human being including an unborn child” at any stage of development and grants rights to an embryo or fetus, called “personhood” provisions.

Gov. Brian Kemp signed Georgia’s abortion law in 2019, but the courts blocked it until last month. Many state agencies said in the days after the law took effect that they had not determined how to implement the “personhood” provisions.

Activists on both sides of the abortion debate began speculating in December that the US Supreme Court would overturn Roe v. Wade, the nearly 50-year-old decision that guaranteed a constitutional right to an abortion, after analyzing oral arguments made about an abortion law in Mississippi.

A draft copy of the Supreme Court opinion overturning Roe was leaked in May, setting the stage for the inevitable final decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization that was made in late June. Last month, the 11th US Circuit Court of Appeals issued its order, allowing Georgia’s law to take effect.
