Samuel Johnson portrait wins Archibald Prize People’s Choice Award

Artist Jeremy Eden has won the Archibald Prize People’s Choice Award with a portrait of actor Samuel Johnson.

A record 35,268 gallery-goers voted in the 2022 award, the most since the prize was first offered in 1988.

After receiving the award at the Art Gallery of NSW, Eden said he was ecstatic to have won the popular vote in his second consecutive year as an Archibald finalist.

“It’s been life-changing… I just hope I can grow with it and be one of those people that’s here every year,” he said.

Being a finalist has alone meant more commissions, and he hopes Wednesday’s win will lead to gallery representation.

“I went from being an emerging artist with nothing to back me up, to people somewhat knowing who I am, which is lovely.”

The Sydney-based artist first met Johnson in 2021 while the actor was recovering from a near-fatal car accident.

He was in a neck brace when they first spoke on a video call, and the pair bonded over their shared experience of losing close family members to cancer.

Eden’s mother died from the illness in 2008, while Johnson founded the cancer charity Love Your Sister with his sibling Connie before she died in 2017.

The winning portrait depicts Johnson holding a photo of Eden’s mother Annette, after the actor encouraged Eden to include his personal story in the portrait too.

The painter flew to Melbourne for a live sitting with Johnson, then worked six hours a day for 10 weeks to finish the portrait.

“The people have spoken and they loved Jeremy the most,” Johnson said in a statement.

“He is an extraordinary storyteller, has a huge heart and he deserves this acknowledgment so fully.”

Love your Sister has a substantial public following and has raised more than $15 million for cancer research.

The Archibald, Wynne and Sulman prizes are on show at the gallery until August 28, and the Archibald finalists will tour regional Victoria and NSW until July 2023.

Cody Simpson’s mum Angie weighs in on her son’s ‘love triangle’ with Emma McKeon and swimmer Kyle Chalmers

Cody Simpson’s mum Angie and sister Alli have weighed in on the singer-turned-swimmer’s love triangle with Emma McKeon and Kyle Chalmers.

Appearing on Sunrise live from the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, Angie and Allie told hosts David Koch and Nat Barr that the former singer’s background in the spotlight — particularly his relationship with Miley Cryus — made him uniquely qualified to handle his private life making global headlines.

“I think he has been lucky because he has had so much history with press and media before, performing on stage for thousands of people,” Angie said.

“So I think the pressures of what he has dealt with in camp and at the Commonwealth Games has been pretty easy for him.

“It has given him an advantage to deal with a lot of those stresses and not let that stuff bother him.”

Alli added: “I think he’s used to it, growing up from a very young age in the entertainment world a lot of this stuff is what comes with it, the public eye and the public world.”

Nashville votes down holding 2024 GOP convention, leaving Milwaukee as likely RNC host city

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Nashville council members on Tuesday night voted down a draft agreement to host the 2024 Republican National Convention, effectively taking Tennessee’s capital city out of the running in its battle with Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to host the GOP’s next presidential nominating convention.

Republican Gov. Bill Lee of Tennessee and Republicans in the state legislature heavily lobbied for Nashville to host the convention, but the city’s Democratic dominated Metro Council voted down the draft agreement. According to numerous local reports, only 10 council members voted in favour, with 22 against and three abstentions.

Milwaukee approved its draft resolution in June, and two weeks ago the Republican National Committee’s (RNC) Site Selection Committee — which oversees the 2024 convention planning — recommended Milwaukee over Nashville.

The committee will make its formal presentation on Thursday to the full RNC membership in a closed session, as the national party committee holds its summer meeting in Chicago. The full RNC membership on Friday will vote in a public session on the Site Selection committee’s recommendation for Milwaukee to host the convention.

Tuesday night’s vote appears to be the final nail in the coffin for Nashville’s chances of hosting the convention. But a source familiar with the RNC’s convention selection process told Fox News following Nashville council vote that “nothing has changed, and the final vote will still be on Friday.”

The two national parties often hold their conventions in competitive general election states. While Tennessee is a reliably red state in presidential contests, Wisconsin’s a key battleground.

Earlier this year Salt Lake City, Utah and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania were dropped from contention to host the 2024 GOP convention.

Democratic National Committee officials are continuing to visit the cities hoping to host the Democrats’ 2024 presidential nominating convention. The DNC may announce their choice when they hold their annual summer meeting in early September.

ASX LIVE: Australian shares to open lower; Wall Street down on US/China tensions; $A at US$69.18¢; Aust bond yields down; oil up. Ahead: Pinnacle, Genworth earnings.

The Australian dollar returned to the black on Wednesday, but was still nursing hefty losses from its 1.5 per cent slide overnight. It took a beating after the Reserve Bank opened the door to a slower pace of interest rate increases at its policy meeting. It stood at US69.20¢ in afternoon trading.

Australian government bond yields regained some ground, tracking higher US rates after hawkish comments from several Federal Reserve officials, in contrast to the RBA’s more cautious approach.

The RBA raised interest rates by 0.5 percentage points to 1.85 per cent on Tuesday, saying future tightening would depend on data and the environment.

Investors trimmed their RBA cash rate outlook with interbank futures are fully priced for a 0.25 percentage point lift in the cash rate in September. They imply the cash rate at 2.9 per cent by Christmas with a peak expected in March at 3.3 per cent.

“We expect the RBA to hike to a terminal rate of 3.35 per cent to contain the upside risks to inflation – but we have slightly lowered the subjective probability of 50bp hikes in each of September (60 per cent) and October (55 per cent) alongside the incrementally cautious tone of today’s statement,” said Andrew Boak, chief economist for Australia and NZ at Goldman Sachs.

Three-year government bond yields edged up to 2.8 per cent, from a low of 2.7 per cent on Tuesday, but were still well under a peak of 3.8 per cent in mid-June. Likewise, the 10-year yield nudged up to 3.1 per cent, but away from above 4 per cent as recently as mid-June.

Australian retail sales volumes topped forecasts in the June quarter, as consumer demand proved resilient despite soaring inflation.

Retail sales in April-June rose an inflation-adjusted 1.4 per cent from the previous quarter, beating market forecasts of a 1.2 per cent gain, the Australian Bureau of Statistics said on Wednesday.

Yet, Tapas Strickland, director of the economics and markets team at NAB, warned of emerging signs of moderation in food and household goods, probably related to steeper prices and already elevated spending, rather than the impact of higher rates.

“Volumes should moderate in the quarters ahead given recent interest rate increases, an erosion of real incomes due to higher prices and some associated reductions in discretionary spending,” he said. “The question will be to what extent will some categories of services spending hold up more.”

The consumer discretionary sector led the losses on the ASX, down 1.5 per cent with Domino’s Pizza down 3.6 per cent to $71,215. Star Entertainment shed 2.8 per cent to $3,005, Aristocrat eased 2 per cent to $$34,615 and JB Hi-Fi dropped 1.58 per cent to $42.92.

WhatsApp and Facebook security alert issued over malicious Android apps

A top security group has issued a warning to smartphone users running Android over multiple apps that were available on the Google Play Store.

Dr. Web listed over 30 mobile apps that were identified to contain trojans, spyware, adware and other security problems.

The apps related to theme customizations, photo editors and apps that changed the phone’s wallpaper. Alarmingly, an emoji keyboard that had racked up millions of downloads and a note-taking app were found to contain malware.

When the apps were installed, Dr. Web found them to display intrusive advertising within both the apps and notification bar, log identifying information on the user and device, download additional software and even target WhatsApp private messages.

It is also revealed that some of these malicious apps were found to be taking photos and videos without the user’s knowledge, as well as read text messages, track the location of a device, turn on the microphone, read the browser history, and log keystrokes to reveal passwords and other sensitive user information.

‘Hint – Photo Editor’ was found to redirect a user to a fake Facebook login screen which would intercept personal information.

Google has removed most of the affected apps after Dr. Web alerted the tech giant to the issues, however, these apps can still remain on a smartphone even after they are taken off the Google Play Store.

Dr. Web is advising users to check their smartphones for any of these apps, uninstalling and then changing login information to things like banking, streaming and social media accounts. It’s also recommended to run a virus scan from a trusted brand such as Norton.

Warner Brothers shelves upcoming Batgirl film in post-production stage

Warner Brothers has made an 11th-hour announcement it will not release Batgirl, a film which had reached the post-production stage.

The film stars In the Heights actor Leslie Grace as the title character, with Michael Keaton reprising his role as Batman.

The Mummy’s Brendan Fraser also appeared in the film, which was due to be released through streaming service HBO Max.

Hollywood sources report Warner Brothers predicted the film would not earn enough money to cover its budget.

The Hollywood Reporter said Batgirl’s budget of $US90 million ($130 million) was lower than the average DC film, so “the film is said not to have the spectacle that audiences have come to expect from DC fare.”

The New York Post, which broke the news, cited a source who said the film’s budget had exceeded $US100 million and the film had tanked during audience tests.

The studio also scrapped another entry in the Scooby-Doo animated film series.

“The decision to not release Batgirl reflects our leadership’s strategic shift as it relates to the DC universe and HBO Max,” a Warner Brothers statement said.

“Leslie Grace is an incredibly talented actor and this decision is not a reflection of her performance.

“We are incredibly grateful to the filmmakers of Batgirl and Scoob! Holiday Haunt and their respective casts and we hope to collaborate with everyone again in the near future.”

Grace is yet to speak publicly about the decision.

Comancheros bikie boss Mark Buddle in police custody in Australia after extradition from Turkey

Comancheros bikie boss Mark Buddle has been deported from Turkey and is in police custody in Australia.

Buddle is suspected of being involved in major drug shipments to Australia and is a person of interest in the 2010 murder of NSW security guard Gary Allibon.

SEE THE ARREST FOOTAGE IN THE VIDEO PLAYER ABOVE

Buddle left Australia in 2016 and has been living in various locations in the Middle East since then.

He is expected to face court on Wednesday.

Footage has emerged of Comanchero bikie boss Mark Buddle being frogmarched into a police station in handcuffs.

Buddle is suspected of having moved to Northern Cyprus to avoid extradition to Australia, where he faces questioning about his alleged involvement in drug and murder investigations.

Northern Cyprus is not officially recognized by any country other than Turkey and does not share an extradition treaty with Australia.

Buddle took over as head of the Comancheros in 2009 following the jailing of former boss, Mahmoud 'Mick' Hawi.

Buddle took over the leadership of the Comancheros in 2009 when former boss Mahmoud “Mick” Hawi was jailed over a fatal brawl at Sydney Airport.

Hawaii was later shot dead outside a gym in Sydney.

Buddle fled Australia in 2016 after being named a person of interest in the murder of a security guard and has evaded authorities ever since.

In 2010, 59-year-old Gary Allibon was shot in the back during the early-morning robbery of a cash-in-transit van on Sydney’s Sussex Street.

It is understood he had handed over a cash box and had his hands in the air when he was shot.

Buddle is believed to have been one of the focus points of police investigations — although no charges have been laid.

It is understood Buddle has spent the past several years in different countries with partner Melanie Ter Wisscha and their two children.

For several years, Buddle lived with long time partner Melanie Ter Wisscha and their two children in Dubai.

Last year, video surfaced of Buddle in an altercation with tourists at a Dubai pool.

Soon after, he left the country and the Sydney-born fugitive is believed to have traveled to Turkey, Greece and Iraq, before finally settling in Northern Cyprus.

In 2021, Cypriot newspaper Kibris Gercek reported Buddle had been granted residency by high-ranking politicians until August 6, 2022.

The reason for the residence permit was reported to be his “high income”.

A statement by the interior ministry said police had later determined Buddle’s presence was “inconvenient in terms of public peace and security”.

Indian start-up Zepto’s founders share tips on how to build a business

When Kaivalya Vohra wanted to drop out of Stanford University to run his startup, it took “a couple of long conversations” to convince his parents.

But bringing them on board wasn’t too difficult, he said.

“They saw how this business was growing in front of them, they saw how quickly we achieved what we achieved.”

It took just nine months for Vohra and his co-founder, Aadit Palicha, to bring Zepto — an app from India that promises to deliver groceries in less than 10 minutes — to a valuation of $900 million.

Going in with the mindset that you’re wrong and learning where to get right… that journey has been humbling.

Addit Palicha

Co-founder and CEO, Zepto

How did two teenagers build one of India’s fastest-growing quick commerce apps? CNBC Make It finds out.

1.Talk to customers

Finding a good product-market fit is important, said Vohra. His advice from him on how to do that?

“Speak to customers. Just use that as a holy grail [to] ensure you’re on the right track to finding product market fit.”

“One of the hardest things is actually getting to that point where you have a product that people love… It is much easier and much faster if you’re constantly speaking to customers, getting feedback from them and learning from them,” he added.

In the early days of Zepto, the 19-year-olds handled customer support themselves and delivered groceries to consumers just so that they could have a quick chat with them.

Zepto isn’t the only quick commerce startup in India, and competition is heating up both domestically and globally. The country’s online grocery market is set to be worth around $24 billion dollars by 2025, according to Redseer.

Zepto

“We still do it till this day… We’ve got millions of customers, with hundreds of thousands of orders every day. [We still] spend a significant amount of time just speaking to customers, learning from them,” said Palicha.

“Going in with the mindset that you’re wrong and learning where to get right… that journey has been humbling.”

2. Fall in love with your product

Palicha and Vohra weren’t always taken seriously — not just because of their age, but also because of the “craziness” of an under-10 minute delivery idea.

“When we started this 12 months ago, every conversation we had was, ‘You’re totally out of your mind, this is never going to work,'” said Palicha.

But their conviction in their product kept them going.

“Kaivalya and I fell in love with the product so much that we just saw ourselves as custodians of what would probably end up being a large phenomenon in consumer internet in India,” said Palicha.

“If we don’t build it, somebody else will. When you operate with that mentality, everything becomes less intimidating.”

Falling in love with the product and building that conviction really just pushes you to… see that product through.

Addit Palicha

Co-founder and CEO, Zepto

That’s why the duo could take on “challenging conversations” with investors, senior executives, and even a government official, Palicha added.

Despite being just one of many businesses to join the instant commerce wave, it has caught the attention of investors. Its latest cash injection of $200 million in May brought Zepto one step closer to unicorn status.

“Falling in love with the product and building that conviction really just pushes you to… see that product through,” said Palicha.

3. Be accountable

Palicha and Vohra have been friends since they were seven-year-olds — a major advantage as they turned from childhood pals to business partners.

“Kaivalya and I really complement each other’s skill set. He has always been more technically sound than I am, so he’s made a great chief technology officer,” said Palicha.

“12 months ago, when we were building the first iteration of the product, I don’t think we’d been able to get it off the ground [without him].”
