Texas ‘Honor Killing’ Dad Yaser Said Molested Girls Years Before Allegedly Shooting Them, Mom Testifies

The Texas father accused of fatally shooting his daughters in the back of his taxi in an “honor killing” allegedly sexually assaulted the two girls years prior—and then threatened to kill their mother if they didn’t recant their claims to police.

The shocking accusation against Yaser Said came during testimony by his ex-wife, Patricia Owen, in Dallas County Court on Thursday during his capital murder trial. Breaking down several times on the stand, Owens testified that her daughters, Sarah and Amina, told her in 1998 that Said had touched them.

After learning about the allegations, Owens said that she went with the daughters to the Hill County Sheriff’s Department “to make a report” before moving to another town to be near her sister. At the time, Amina would have been around 8 years old and Sarah would have been 7.

The charges were ultimately dropped after the girls recanted out of fear of their father, she said.

“He wanted me to go back to him and if I didn’t go back to him, he threatened to kill me and my family,” Owens said, adding that Said stated he wanted to kill her after she filed the charges. “He said nothing would happen to him.”

As Owens testified, Said sat emotionally across the room.

Years later, on New Year’s Day in 2008, prosecutors allege that Said shot his daughters in an “honor killing” outside Dallas after learning they had begun dating and could no longer “control them.” The grisly execution came days after Owens and her daughters de ella had escaped from Said, even successfully relocating to Oklahoma before returning to Texas after he reported them missing.

Prosecutors allege that after the murders, Said evaded authorities for 12 years, landing him on the FBI’s Most Wanted List before he was ultimately found in 2020 hiding about 40 minutes away from the crime scene in Justin, Texas. Said, 64, has pleaded not guilty to the capital murder charge for the crime that his lawyers have insisted was only pinned on him because he is Muslim.

Owens’ appearance marked the third day of testimony in the prosecution’s presentation against Said, whom they allege was “obsessed with possession and control.” That control, Owens said, included choosing where the family would live and who they would communicate with.

She’s asking for help and she names her killer, her father, Yaser Said.

“I have controlled what they did, who they talked to, who they could be friends with, if they—and who they—could date. And he controlled everything in his household, ”prosecutor Lauren Black said during opening statements on Tuesday.

While she left Said several times throughout their marriage, Owens said she always returned out of fear.

One of those times, she said, was in 1998 after her daughters accused him of abuse. After leaving for Garland, Texas, Owens said that she ultimately had to file another report with local police after Said Ella and his brother repeatedly called her and threatened harm if she did n’t obey them and return.

While she dropped the Garland charges, Owens said that in October 1998 she applied for a protective order against Said on behalf of her girls. She never went through with the protective order, however, because she and her daughters de ella “went back” to Said.

Shortly after, her daughters recanted their sexual abuse allegations to the police.

“I was scared not to go back,” she told jurors. “Yaser was abusive.”

In the weeks leading up to the murders, prosecutors allege Said had grown “angrier” after feeling he had lost control of his wife and daughters, who had been dating non-Muslim men. Owens said that while she knew about her daughter’s boyfriends, the trio kept the information from her husband out of fear of her reaction.

It wasn’t until December 2007, however, when prosecutors allege Said put a gun to Amina’s head and threatened to kill her, that the teenagers and their mother began to hatch their plan to escape shortly before Christmas.

Owens said that on Christmas Day, after Said went to work, she and her daughters escaped to Oklahoma with their clothes “in trash bags.” The next day, however, Said reported them missing to the Lewisville Police Department—forcing Owens to call an officer to insist she was “alive and well” but she was fearful of her husband.

Amina and Sarah would eventually return to the Dallas area on New Year’s Eve, after Owens said that Said and his brother repeatedly called begging her to return. She said that Said left messages that he had changed and that he would leave the house if they didn’t want him there.

The mother added that part of her decision to bring the girls back to Dallas was so Amina could finish high school and not jeopardize her college scholarship. Prosecutors allege that Said eventually lured his daughters into his taxi, where Amina was sitting in the front passenger seat and Sarah was in the back.

Owens was told “to stay home” as her husband drove around her daughters to talk. Authorities believe that the daughters were shot before 7:30 pm near the Omni Hotel. Around the time, Sarah Said called 911 twice, stressing she was “dying” after her father shot her.

“She’s asking for help and she names her killer, her father, Yaser Said,” Black said about Sarah’s 911 call.

A defense attorney for Said, however, insisted in opening arguments that his client was targeted because of his faith—and that the calls to police only indicate that Sarah was in an extreme moment of trauma. Attorney Joel Patton also repeatedly called into question Owens’ ability to answer questions, accusing prosecutors of leading her and stressing that some of the mother’s allegations of her were false.

“It is wrong for the government to generalize an entire culture, criminalize an entire culture, to fit their narrative, and to fit their objective,” Patton said on Tuesday. “The state wants to convict Yaser for being Muslim in 2008.”

ChromeOS 104: Dark theme, Launcher, Cal widget

ChromeOS 104 is rolling out starting today with several big interface updates that improve how you use the operating system.

ChromeOS 104 introduce proper dark and light themes that touch every aspect of the user interface. This includes the shelf, app launcher, Files app, and the backgrounds of various settings pages. You can enable the dark theme from the second page of Quick Settings. Google also created wallpapers that “subtly shift from light to dark,” depending on the set theme.

After updating, you’ll notice that the month and day now appear to the left of the time on the shelf. Tapping opens to monthly calendar with the ability to tap a day to see all events, with an additional click opening the Google Calendar PWA. You can see other months and quickly return to “Today.”

This takes up the same size as Quick Settings, while any available alerts appear just above. Notifications from the same sender are now grouped together, while there are bigger touch targets for alert actions.

the redesigned Launcher that’s more compact and does not take up your entire screen is seeing wider availability. Additionally, some might be able to quickly search for Android apps from the Play Store with an inline rating.

Version 104 of ChromeOS introduces a more full-featured Gallery app (with a new purple icon) that can open PDFs with the ability to fill out forms, sign documents, and make text annotations, like highlights.

There’s also a new wallpaper&style application that’s accessed by right-clicking the shelf and selecting the last option. Besides the collections curated by Google, you can set wallpapers from your Google Photos library. There’s the ability to select an album and have a new background appear daily.

This experience also lets you set the device theme (auto-switching available), and Screen saver with three styles available: Slide show, Feel the breeze, and Float on by.

Batgirl star Leslie Grace thanks fans, directors ‘shocked’ at movie’s axing

The directors of the scrapped Batgirl movie say they are shocked by the news their work won’t make it to screens.

Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah responded to the axing alongside star Leslie Grace who described the seven months of “hard work” that went into filming.

Warner Brothers opted to shelve the $90-million movie planned for subscription service HBO Max as the reorganized studio revamps its approach to streaming and DC Comic films.

The decision has sent shock waves through the industry with the directors and cast taking to social media to express their disappointment.

“We are saddened and shocked by the news. We still can’t believe it,” El Arbi and Fallah said in a statement posted online.

“As directors, it is critical that our work be shown to audiences and, while the film was far from finished, we wish that fans all over the world would have had the opportunity to see and embrace the final film themselves.

“Maybe one day they will.”

The duo, best known for Bad Boys for Life and episodes of Ms Marvel, thanked their “amazing cast and crew” including Grace, who said they portrayed Batgirl with passion, dedication and humanity.

Grace, who previously starred in In the Heights, posted to social media a “thank you” to every Batgirl fan for their belief and allowing her to become her “own damn hero.”

“On the heels of the recent news about our movie Batgirl, I am proud of the love, hard work and intention all of our incredible cast and tireless crew put into this film over seven months in Scotland,” she said.

“I feel blessed to have worked among absolute greats and forged relationships for a lifetime in the process.”

The film’s production wrapped up in April but instead of making it to a streaming debut or cinemas, Warner Brothers decided to completely write off the film which was given the green light before the company’s merger with Discovery Inc.

Warner Brothers Discovery on Thursday reported its second-quarter 2022 earnings during a meeting in which a Deutsche Bank analyst asked CEO David Zaslav about the decision to kill the movie.

“This idea of expensive films going direct to screening, we can’t find an economic case for it,” Zaslav said.

“We can’t find an economic value for it so we’re making a strategic shift.”

Zaslav added Warner Brothers Discovery wasn’t going to put a movie out unless the company believed in it.

“We’re not going to release any film before it’s ready,” he said.

“We’re not going to release a film to make a quarter.”

An early cut of Batgirl had recently undergone one test screening.

While its scores weren’t good, poor test results aren’t rare for Warner Brothers.

The movie wasn’t as pricey as many superhero films, which typically cost $150-200 million to make, but it was a bigger budget movie for an HBO Max title.

South Brunswick abduction: Search for truck, yelling woman seen in video found to be misunderstanding

SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ (WABC) — An all-out search to find a big rig truck and its driver, believed to be involved in a possible abduction of a woman in New Jersey, turned out to be a big misunderstanding.

The search began when South Brunswick Police say they responded to Route 130 near Dayton Toyota on Wednesday, after receiving a report of a woman seen yelling for help inside a white tractor-trailer cab around 2 pm

A witness told police they saw a woman bleeding from her face and a male truck driver pulling her back into the cab as it headed to Route 130 south and then got off at the Ridge Road exit.

Detectives recovered video Wednesday that showed the tractor-trailer cab on Route 130.

“You look at a video like this and the hair starts to stand up on the back of your neck a little bit and say, you know what this is something, we really gotta look into this,” South Brunswick Det. Sgt. Timothy Hoover said.

But what many feared as a kidnapping or incident of domestic violence, turned out to be a huge misunderstanding.

The story was so compelling that cops got tips from across the country, but the break in the case came from Gabrielli Truck Sales, a truck parts store located on Route 130 near where the incident took place.

Workers thought the description of the man and woman sounded familiar, so they checked their video. Turns out, the pair had bought a battery there minutes before the incident. The video allowed detectives to identify the truck as well as the woman.

“There’s a lot of truck out there, there’s a lotta trucks,” said John Efthimiades of Gabrielli Truck Sales. “The initial video they couldn’t read the logo. So they had another video when they figured out they were here and they got a better shot of the truck.”

After a more than 24-hour search, detectives located the truck and the man and woman seen in the video. The were found in Woodbridge just after 5 pm on Thursday.

Shortly after, the man and woman agreed to come to police headquarters, where the true series of events came to light.

It was determined by South Brunswick Police that the woman had fallen and hit her head while standing in the moving truck, causing severe bleeding.

The truck stopped abruptly and the woman called out for help, but the driver pulled her back in and rushed off to get to a hospital.

They instead stopped at a warehouse where they had friends and put pressure on the wound and stopped the bleeding.

Police determined this through selfies and text messages sent by the woman during the order. The man and woman never had any idea they were the subject of a massive search, that spanned locations in Middlesex and Union counties.

“Too often in our profession outcomes are sad,” said Deputy Chief James Ryan of the South Brunswick Police Department. “The fact that she’s safe, the fact that we have all the parties here, we’ll take success when we can.”

Authorities say they made significant progress in the investigation after receiving several pieces of video and tips from the community which helped police build out a timeline of events leading up to and after the incident.

In the end, the incident turned out not to be criminal at all, but cops said that it shows the system works.

“All these different partners came together and this shows collectively if we rally around an issue we can make a positive outcome,” Ryan said.

Super Mario 64 Becomes A First-Person Horror Game

A guy gets a mysterious letter from his girlfriend, arrives at a castle to find her missing, and loads of rooms full of monsters…it’s the setup to 1996’s classic Super Mario 64sure, but it’s also very much also a survival horror pitch, which is why this new fan-made project is such a perfect fit.

Via nintendo lifethis is Another Princess Is In Our Castle“a Super Mario 64 inspired horror experience”, where you “decide to come back to Peach’s castle a few years after the princess’ death, but something isn’t quite right…”

While this looks like a first-person mod it’s actually an entirely fan-made project from the ground up, designed with the perspective in mind, and while it’s currently just a short playable demo, its creator Claudio Mondin hopes to eventually flesh it out into something more substantial.

Here’s a trailer made by Mondin:

And here’s some gameplay footage, showing how the main point is to sneak around the castle collecting items, all the while trying to avoid a Princess who is definitely not peachy:

Like Mondin says, it’s pretty much just a demo, so don’t go expecting too much out of it outside of some sneaking (and the very cool novelty of it). I’m going to play some more later today though just to see what the promised mystery really is though (hopefully the ghost is just upset that her cake turned out dogshit).

You can download the demo and play it yourself here. I don’t want to hear anything about lawyers in the comments, either, just go and enjoy something cool that a fan made.

Kyle Sandilands slams MKR’s Manu Feildel after they have a VERY heated interview on his radio show

Kyle Sandilands slammed My Kitchen Rules judge Manu Feildel on his radio show on Friday after the pair had a tense chat live on-air.

French chef Manu, 48, awkwardly said goodbye to Kyle, 51, after being grilled about his new co-host Nigella Lawson and why she didn’t want to do the interview with him.

After Kyle’s co-host Jackie ‘O’ Henderson mentioned how uncomfortable the interview was, Kyle blasted the culinary star, saying: ‘Who gives as**t what he’s sick and tired of talking about!’

Kyle then ranted about Manu promising that ‘no topic was off limits’ on their KIIS FM show.

‘I’m not here to facilitate other people’s s**t. I like Manu, he can come on and I like the show [MKR]but I’m very shocked about the Nigella [Lawson] thing.’

‘The end was very awkward, I wasn’t sure what was going on there guys? But whatever,’ Jackie O said.

‘What do you mean? I think he felt embarrassed by his co-host (Nigella) let him down, ‘Kyle shot back.

‘Or he’s sick of talking about it,’ Jackie said.

During the chat, Kyle wouldn’t stop probing Manu about why the British TV chef Nigella was a no-show.

‘What’s her problem, apparently I hear, correct me if I’m wrong producers, the network is upset because Nigella’s team said “no way, you’re not going on that filthy show.” Our show, how does that happen?’ Kyle asked.

‘I have no idea, that’s news to me buddy! I will make sure she talks to you next time,’ Manu said with a laugh.

‘How am I meant to support you when the woman besides you loathes the thought of me… you just wriggled out of that and made a false promise. I think she’s amazing, she’s the queen, but when you find out someone doesn’t like you, you can’t help but not like someone back,’ Kyle added.

‘I think you’re just being upset for no reason, Kyle,’ Manu said, keen to get off the subject.

Kyle said he thought Nigella was a ‘sweetie’ but isn’t a fan of her management team.

‘Can you sort her team out…’ Kyle asked Manu towards the end of the chat, which was greeted with awkward silence.

Nigella is joining Manu on the My Kitchen Rules reboot this year, replaced disgraced chef Pete Evans.

According to The Australian, she will only appear in half the episodes of the show.

The publication reported Nigella ‘will appear only for the first round of the show with Manu Feildel.’

Chef Matt Preston will then replace her for the second round, before Colin Fassnidge and Curtis Stone man the show’s finals.

Nigella’s scant appearance comes despite her ‘reputedly huge fee’ the publication reports.

Global home-cooking sensation Nigella is replacing disgraced Pete Evans, who was axed from the Seven network in 2020 amidst the show’s falling ratings in its then eleventh year of production.

Daily Mail Australia has reached out to Channel Seven and Nigella’s management team for comment, in relation to this story.

Australian boxer Alex Winwood left devastated after games ‘outrage’

Alex Winwood has been left dumbfounded after his boxing quarter-final was stopped early in the second round against Zambia’s Patrick Chinyemba, in what was described as an “outrage” at the Commonwealth Games.

Winwood dominated the first round with four of the five judges awarding it to the Aussie, landing two right hands.

At the start of the second round, the Australian was dropped by a right from his opponent, but he got up seemingly unaffected by the shot. However, he was bizarrely ruled to have been knocked out with the bout waved off despite the 25-year-old appearing stable.

“I find that impossible to believe, absolutely impossible to believe. That fight should not have been stopped. That’s not a stoppage. That’s an outrage,” Jon Harker said in commentary for Channel 7.

The Aussie was emotional when he spoke after the fight, with the boxer close to tears.

“It was a pretty fast call. I won the first round, and I thought I won it pretty easily,” he said.

Harker added: “She didn’t give him a chance to get up, she was waving it away before he got to his feet. And look at the way he is walking, not a problem whatsoever.

“That fight should not have been stopped. I’m not saying he was going to go on and win, who knows? But that is not a stoppage.”

Australian Olympic bronze medalist Harry Garside said the fight was called off too early, but Winwood had left the decision open as he looked away after getting up off the ground.

“That’s heartbreaking for Alex. No way that’s a stoppage,” Garside said.

“He wasn’t hurt, he did turn his back which gives the referee some empathy, but you’ve got to wait for the person to get up and give them eight seconds,” he said.

“She waved it off way too soon.”

A library police officer was killed during a training exercise in the Anacostia Neighborhood Library in DC

It happened around 3:30 pm Thursday.

Police arrived in the library on Good Hope Road Southeast for a report of a shooting. They found a library police officer who had been shot and was unconscious and not breathing. They took her to the hospital where she was pronounced dead, DC Police Chief Robert Contee said in a news conference.

There was an ASP baton training taking place at one of the library’s room that involved some six people, including the trainer — a retired DC police officer — and several officers, Contee said.

At the end of the training, the trainer, who was contracted by library police to conduct training, fired a shot and struck the officer.

Contee said the findings are preliminary and a lot of investigation needs to be done, but he’s not sure why the trainer had a live weapon in a training environment.

“It’s not good practice to do that,” Contee said, adding that what happened was a very “unfortunate” and “tragic” event.

Below is a map of where the shooting occurred.

Reserve Bank wary of cautious consumers amid falling house prices, as global economy sours

The Reserve Bank has slashed its forecasts for economic growth as rate rises, house price falls and a souring global economy weigh on Australia’s outlook.

The bank has dramatically scaled back its forecasts for household consumption, which accounts for about 60 per cent of Australia’s economy.

“Higher consumer prices, rising interest rates and declining housing prices are expected to weigh on growth in private spending, at the same time as growth in public demand slows,” the bank noted in its latest Statement on Monetary Policy.

The bank slashed its consumption forecast for the middle of next year from 4.4 per cent to 2.8 per cent, echoing the results of surveys that show consumer sentiment approaching recessionary levels.

Higher interest rates are expected to be a major factor behind tightened belts, with the RBA basing its forecasts on an assumption that its cash rate would hit 3 per cent by the end of the year – up from 1.85 per cent currently – before falling back a little by the end of 2024.

It is important to note that this is not an RBA forecast for the cash rate, but an assumption based on market pricing and economist forecasts.

The outlook for Australia’s gross domestic product (GDP) has been cut by a full percentage point from around 4.2 per cent for December 2022 to 3.2 per cent.

Those cuts continue for the rest of the forecasting period, with the economy expected to grow just 1.75 per cent for the next two years.

Falling house prices, combined with the previous construction boom inspired by ultra-low interest rates and the previous government’s HomeBuilder grant, will result in dwelling investment falling sharply (-4.8 per cent) over 2024.

State and federal governments are also not expected to provide any assistance, with expectations that public spending will shrink next year.

Real wages to keep shrinking

Despite the slowdown in GDP growth, the RBA expects the jobs market to remain strong.

It is now predicting that unemployment will bottom out at about 3.25 per cent later this year before gradually creeping back up to 4 per cent by the end of 2024, as economic growth slows and migration flows start to ease some labor shortages.

Despite this leading to a modest pick-up in wage rises to about 3.5 per cent next year, the Reserve Bank still expects real wages to fall for at least the next year – that is, prices will keep rising faster than pay packets.

After peaking at 7.75 per cent by the end of this year, inflation is still expected to be about 6.2 per cent by the middle of next year, and 4.3 per cent at the end of 2023.

A key reason for this will be further pain for electricity and gas users.

“Contacts within the bank’s liaison program generally expect further significant increases in retail electricity prices in 2023,” the RBA observed.

“This is largely because the recently announced regulated price increases for 2022 were decided before the latest run-up in wholesale prices and because wholesale prices are expected to remain elevated.”

Consumers can also expect to see more manufacturers and retailers passing the increased cost of their inputs on in retail prices.

“A significant share of firms in the bank’s liaison program have increased prices or expect to do so over the coming months as a result of earlier increases in input costs,” the report noted.

“Some upstream cost pressures are showing signs of easing but it will take some time before this affects prices paid by consumers.”

Risks ‘skewed to the downside’

However, even those downgraded forecasts remain vulnerable to a weaker global economy.

The IMF recently slashed its global economic forecasts, while the Bank of England overnight warned of a long recession in the UK even as it raised interest rates there by half a percentage point.

“The risks to the global outlook are skewed to the downside,” the RBA warned.

“The synchronized nature of the tightening in monetary policy globally could prove quite contractionary, and is occurring at a time when fiscal policy is offering less support.”

Closer to home, the Reserve Bank has an eye on Australia’s biggest trading partner, where economic growth has virtually ground to a halt in recent months.

“Restrictions to control the spread of COVID-19 in China led to an unexpectedly large contraction there in the June quarter; further outbreaks could both weigh on growth in China and disrupt global supply chains,” the bank cautioned.

“The Chinese economy is also contending with weak property market conditions and increasing levels of distress among developers.”
