Salt Bae’s London restaurant has made £7m in just four months despite getting hammered by everyone

Salt Bae’s restaurant in London has reported an impressive £7 million ($8.55m) in sales in its first four months of trading despite receiving poor reviews and criticism over its prices.

All it took was one customer purchasing one of the restaurant’s gold leaf-covered steaks and a bottle of wine.

Okay, admittedly it took a little bit more than that, but the infamously high prices at the restaurant will no doubt have gone a long way in helping the Nusr-Et Steakhouse in Knightsbridge earn into the millions within its first few months.

The restaurant, owned by viral sensation Salt Bae (Nusret Gökçe), opened its doors in September 2021 before revealing its takings in a financial report filed to the UK’s Companies House.

The report revealed that the company brought in £7m in its first four months of trading, with an overall profit of £2.3m ($2.79m) in the year to December.

Nusret UK Limited, which owns the restaurant and is controlled by the Turkish conglomerate Doğuş Group, said the Knightsbridge location had ‘performed higher than the expected results’ in spite of the impacts of coronavirus on the hospitality industry.

The high earnings also come in spite of the mixed reviews the restaurant has received, with its rating on Google coming in at just 2.9 stars and a TripAdvisor rating placing it among the worst places to eat in London.

Reviews from customers have been varied, with some praising the food, atmosphere and overall experience while others just can’t get over the prices, which according to receipts shared by customers include £18 asparagus, £11 Red Bulls and a staggering £850 steak .

One review from a not-so-impressed customer reads: “Bang average for what it’s supposed to be….I went with the intention of hoping I’d have at least a half decent experience. But slow service, average food, with the ridiculous price they charge for what they’re giving… in short, if you can avoid going, definitely do so.”

Another says: “Not even mentioning the money I knew where I was going but service and food are not worth it. Getting food before drinks, stake [sic] was very good but had better in GAUCHO for half the price and with better wine selection. Don’t get the fuss around this… maybe superficial reasons for the rich to feel rich. my macdonald’s [sic] after was great tho.”

Though the restaurant obviously isn’t for everyone, it’s at least received enough praise to edge it towards a three-star rating on Google, and there are a number of five-star ratings from customers who were blown away by their experiences. Plus, the report of his earnings indicates it’s not doing too badly either way, so for once Salt Bae will probably have no issue ignoring the saltiness.

Raising prices and getting away with it

All this is why the latest leap in inflation has led some economists to worry that, if expectations become “unanchored”, inflation may become entrenched at a much higher level.

This fear explains why many are anxious to use higher interest rates to get actual inflation back down ASAP. If falling real wages help to speed the process, so much the better.

Two small problems with this. For a start, there’s little evidence – either here or in the other rich economies – that expectations have moved up. Sensibly, everyone expects that, before too long, the inflation rate will go back to being a lot lower.

Our modern oligopolised economy gives many big businesses a lot of power over the prices they’re able to charge.

In the real world of price-setting by firms and workers, it takes a lot longer for expectations to shift prices than it does for prices in share and other financial markets to bounce around.

But the deeper reason worries about worsening expectations are misplaced is that, since this theory became so influential in the ’70s, the mechanism by which the expected inflation rate becomes the actual rate has broken down.

Businesses retain the ability to raise their prices when they decide to – and to discount those prices should they discover they’ve pushed it too far and are losing sales – but organized workers have largely lost their ability to force employers to grant higher pay rises.

If you doubt that, ask yourself why the number of days lost to strikes is now the tiniest fraction of what it was in the ’70s. We’ve seen a little strike action lately, but it’s coming almost wholly from workers in the public sector – the main part of the workforce that’s still heavily unionized.

But the breakdown of the inflation-expectations theory and the “wage-price spiral” as explanations of the relatively modern phenomenon of inflation – a continuing rise in the general level of prices – leaves us looking elsewhere for explanations.

A big part of it is the message those economists who specialize in studying competition have to give financial economists such as Lowe: you don’t seem to realize that our modern oligopolised economy gives many big businesses a lot of power over the prices they’re able to charge.

Oligopoly is about the few huge firms dominating a particular market reaching a tacit agreement to keep prices high and stable, and limit their competition for market-share to non-price areas such as product differentiation and marketing.

loading

As former competition czar Rod Sims has pointed out, this greatly reduces the ability of higher interest rates to influence prices in many big slabs of the economy.

But if many big businesses can improve their profitability by deciding to raise their prices, why did they wait until only a year ago to decide to start whacking them up? Because it ain’t that simple.

All firms would like to raise their prices all the time. What stops them is the knowledge that they can’t charge more than “what the market will bear”. They worry about two things: what will my competitors do? And what will my customers do?

When there’s a big rise in input costs, the knowledge that all my competitors are facing the same cost increase gives me confidence we’ll all be passing it through to the customer at the same time.

That’s why it was the sudden, large and widespread increase in the cost of imported inputs caused by the pandemic and the Ukraine war that started the latest bout of prices rises at the retail level.

RBA Governor Philip Lowe's says “inflation psychology” is just as important as “inflation expectations”.

But, as Lowe keeps saying, the supply chain cost increases don’t explain there the rises in retail prices. He makes the obvious point that firms find it easier to raise their prices at a time when demand is strong and people are spending. His interest-rate rises are intended to stop demand being so strong and conducive to price rises.

But the less obvious point – especially to people mesmerized by the neoclassical way of thinking – is the role of psychology. I’ve got a great justification for increasing my prices, but no one’s counting. If my costs have risen by 5 per cent, but I increase my prices by 6 per cent, who’s to know?

Sims reminds us that this is just the way firms with pricing power behave. They raise their prices and profits in ways that aren’t easy for their customers to notice.

That covers big business. In the main, small businesses don’t have much pricing power. But “what the market will bear” is greater when the average has spent months softening up their customers with incessant talk about inflation and how high prices will go.

Lowe can’t say it, but it’s not uncooperative workers that are his problem, it’s businesses using the chance to slip in a little extra for themselves.

Raiders Dragons finish, Matt Feagai, Corey Harawira-Naera, penalty, no call, referee Andrew Gee, Round 22, Round 16

Rugby league has a funny way of balancing itself out.

The Dragons and Raiders have now been handed wins against each other this season in “almost identical” controversial fashion.

Canberra led 24-22 on Sunday afternoon when St George Illawarra winger Matt Feagai made a 70-metre break with just 10 seconds left in the game.

Feagai was tackled 15 meters out from the Raiders’ line when Corey Harawira-Naera laid on top of him as time expired.

“They’re told to get up, penalty brewing, but referee (Adam Gee) says that will do us, oh it’s almost identical,” Brenton Speed said on Fox League.

“Round 16 all over again in reverse. The Dragons are thinking ‘where’s our penalty’ that the Raiders did not get in Wollongong but Adam Gee says that is full-time and Canberra’s season is still alive and the Dragons are done.”

Back in July, the Raiders were robbed of an opportunity to kick a penalty goal to send their clash with the Dragons to golden point.

Canberra had the ball in front of the goalposts on the fifth tackle, when Ben Hunt and Jack Bird intentionally slowed the play-the-ball.

The Raiders were awarded a six again before Hunt charged from market to tackle dummy-half Tom Starling — a play which NRL head of football Graham Annesley later admitted should have been awarded a penalty.

Annesley also conceded a penalty could have been awarded for the flop and an off-side call in the lead-up to the fifth tackle.

The scenes reversed on Sunday afternoon as a stunned Dragons coach Anthony Griffin looked on in disbelief.

“He should have been penalized at the very least for a professional foul,” Braith Anasta said on Fox League.

“There was just one last shove from (Harawira-Naera), because as Feagai was getting tackled the clock was ticking down… but there was a little shove,” Greg Alexander said.

“It’s incredible that we’ve had both teams win games in very similar circumstances.”

But speaking in the post-game press conference, Griffin wasn’t too upset about what he had played out — he even conceded it was “a little bit ironic” given what had happened in Round 16.

Asked if I found the ending frustrating Griffin said: “Nah, it’s probably a little bit ironic compared to the first game.

“We just ran out of time, it was a fantastic linebreak at that time of the game and the captain did everything he could with his kicking game to get us into field position and put Matty away,” he added.

“We just needed one more play the ball but that’s the way the world works.”

How to keep bath towels ‘soft and fresh’ for longer – the laundry product to avoid

Laundry can be a chore, especially when it comes to bath towels. While it is important to wash them at high temperatures and not mix them with other fabrics, with energy bills on the rise, this may not be possible for some people. According to one expert, Britons should avoid using bleach and fabric softeners.

Jessica Hanley, founder of Piglet in Bed, said: “Wash your new towels before you use them.

“Nearly all new towels are coated with softeners that are often used during the finishing process, which provides that extra-fluffy look that you see at the store.

“The coating can restrict the absorbency of your towels, so it’s best practice to wash them before your first use.”

According to the expert, this can affect the color and quality of the towels.

READ MORE: Five kitchen items you ‘need’ to give your space the ‘wow factor’

“Washing towels with clothes can transfer a lot of bacteria between each item in the washing cycle.

“Putting towels in their own load allows towels to dry easier, as damp towels typically dry slower than clothes.

“Make sure you shake any excess water from your towels before placing them in the dryer, as this will help fluff the material and keep them absorbent.

“Avoid leaving wet towels to sit in the washer for a long period of time, as this can result in an unpleasant musty smell.”

Drying towels on a high heat can damage the cotton fibers.

Opting to dry towels outside can make them crisper, which some people may like.

If choosing to dry towels in a tumble dryer, especially in the winter months, the expert recommended drying at 40 degrees.

Jessica said: “This will help achieve your desired softness, eliminating bacteria in the process.

“In the summer months, take advantage of the sun to let your towels air dry – the ultimate all-natural dryer that helps maintain the integrity of the fabric, and keeps your towels soft and fresh.”

When it comes to storing towels, the expert recommended folding them to achieve a square shape.

NRL 2022: Best league facility on the planet

The facility includes a multi-lane swimming pool (with a custom-made Wests Tigers logo mosaic), ice bath and heated bath for recovery and rehabilitation. There’s also a steam room and sauna.

The gym, arguably the biggest of all NRL clubs, also includes a wrestling arena and a mini-scaled league field for team walkthroughs.

The facility will be home to both the football department and the club’s administration.

The NRL head coaches office, which currently has Sheens’ name tag and mug on the desk, overlooks the gym.

There’s also a theater, sleeping room, mental health hub, barbecue area, juice bar and barber included in the facility.

The club has also paid tribute to the history of both Balmain and Western Suburbs, erecting a walk of fame with the greatest players from the Tigers and Magpies on display through the corridors.

The second stage of the complex is still under construction but will include multi-purpose sports courts for basketball, netball and indoor soccer.

Pascoe has copped the brunt of criticism in regards to the team’s on-field performances under his rein.

However, his legacy at the club will be the lobbying with government and corporate partners to turn the club’s dreams into a reality.

Inspired by visits to the New York Jets, New York Giants, LA Dodgers and Atlanta Braves facilities in the United States, the center of excellence takes into consideration all aspects of the business.

The Tigers have been the nomads of the NRL, shifting home grounds and training bases throughout the joint venture’s existence.

They’ve traditionally spent more time at training than other teams given how much time they spend on the road between different sessions.

“We’ve been in and around different places, training in Leichhardt, training in Concord, training in Campbelltown,” prop Alex Twal said.

“To have one ground where it’s a one-stop shop where we can do all our things from here, it’s going to be a massive boost for the players, especially for us players who have been here quite a few years.

“It’s been a long time coming. It’s going to be a really good thing for the club. We’ve never had something like this at the club. There’s a lot of exciting times ahead.”

The club has long been using images and simulated footage to show prospective players and coaches the new facility.

They took Cameron Ciraldo through the facility when they tried to lure him to the club, and also showed Isaiah Papali’i around when he first started to get cold feet.

“I think it will definitely increase our recruitment,” Twal said.

“When you’re coming in to a new club and you see these sorts of facilities and opportunities to work around this space, I think it’s definitely going to be something that people and players look forward to.

“It means so much to the players. It’s only going to be a positive for the club going forward, and the team.”

David Elliott launched extraordinary attack on Matt Kean

Premier Dominic Perrottet warned both Elliott and Kean this year as the pair clashed over the reasons behind the Coalition’s loss at the federal election, warning ministers needed to do their jobs or face the sack.

loading

Unless a deal can be struck early this week, commuters face major disruptions on the T3 Bankstown, T8 Airport and South, and the Southern Highlands lines on Wednesday when another six-hour stoppage by workers is due to occur.

Station staff are also planning to leave ticket gates open from this weekend until September 6.

The rail union wants the government to sign the deed guaranteeing that it will modify the new intercity trains at a cost of $264 million, before completing negotiations over a new pay deal.

The government wants both the train fleet modifications and a new enterprise agreement completed together. The deed will be conditional on an enterprise agreement being ticked off by both sides, with senior government figures expecting it to be presented to the unions early this week.

loading

As negotiations drag on between the government and unions, some government MPs have indicated they’re concerned Elliott has not taken the government’s offer directly to the transport workforce.

“David Elliott’s idea of a negotiation is just to give everything away to the unions in order to make himself look a hero,” a Liberal source said.

But the transport minister said he was working closely with the unions to come to an agreement on the intercity fleet and broader bargaining agreement.

Elliott said he did not believe the industrial stand-off with the rail union would prove to be a political headache for the Coalition ahead of the March state election given Labor leader Chris Minns was already calling for an end to action on the network.

“I don’t think it’s going to be necessarily a political issue between the government and the opposition because [Labor] is smart enough to know where public opinion is on this,” Elliott said.

“Of course I’ll be talking again to the union this week and reiterate my plea for them to lock in both the deed and the enterprise agreement as a matter of urgency because I think they have lost public support and I’m worried commuters will start taking it out on front-line workers.”

Both Kean and Tudehope were contacted for comment.

Rock was wearing a red Swans cap and was enjoying the action on his visit to Sydney.

The Swans posted a photo of the actor and comedian holding a jersey signed by the whole Sydney team.

Channel 7 commentator Brian Taylor couldn’t help himself, making a not-so-subtle reference to when Rock was famously slapped by Will Smith at the Academy Awards earlier this year.

“Famous face here Chris Rock, of course of Grow Ups fame and he just accepts a slap really well these days doesn’t he, Chris Rock,” Taylor said tongue-in-cheek.

Alister Nicholson valiantly tried to get the commentary back on track, adding: “I reckon in terms of A-listers he’s just behind Buddy Franklin in terms of No. 1 at the SCG today BT.”

AFL fans couldn’t believe Taylor had made ice cold remark on live TV.

The Swans controlled the first half and took a 37-22 lead into the main break.

The Magpies are still in touching distance and the match appears set to go down to the wire in typical Collingwood fashion.

Kostecki ‘closer’ to securing NASCAR cameos

Brodie Kostecki

Brodie Kostecki is closer to finalizing his plans of making a start in select NASCAR races next year, in addition to re-signing with Erebus Motorsport in Supercars.

It was announced over the OTR SuperSprint weekend that both Kostecki and Will Brown will stay on at Erebus in the Repco Supercars Championship through to the end of 2024.

However, Kostecki earmarked a tilt in NASCAR after a trip to the United States earlier this year.

Kostecki’s plans are closer to reality, set to be finalized once the 2023 Supercars calendar and NASCAR schedules get released.

The 24-year-old and his manager, Nathan Cayzer, are targeting road course appearances in either the Cup Series or second-tier Xfinity Series.

“I’m trying to do more racing, in general, I love racing,” Kostecki told Speedcafe.com.

“I’m pretty lucky that I get to do it for a job, but I’ve always loved the experience I had in America.

“So I want to grab every opportunity that I have to race.

“If I get an opportunity to race over the next year, which is looking likely, one of the road courses in a Cup, or an Xfinity car will be pretty cool.

“SW [my management team is] just trying to work on a few things and getting sort of closer, but we’re just waiting for the schedules to get released [to] work out how we can work in a few races.”

Kostecki previously competed in what is now known as the ARCA Menards Series East during his formative years before returning home to pursue a career in Supercars.

The Gold Coast-based driver acknowledged it would be a major step up the ladder to make it into the Cup Series, but believes it would be the easiest option.

That’s largely down to the all-new ‘Next Gen’ NASCAR machinery having similarities to both the incumbent Gen2 Supercar and new-for 2023 Gen3 Supercar.

“It’s been pretty lucky, they’ve sort of taken a direction with the new Next Gen car they have, it’s very similar to a Supercar in a way,” Kostecki added.

“The aero is a little bit different, but the main mechanical part of the cars [is] very similar to what we have now and even our Gen3 package that we’re going to be racing next year.

“So yeah, Cup would probably be the easiest to adapt to.

“But the competition is obviously very high in that sort of category. So yeah, we’ll see what happens.”

Kostecki is currently eighth in the Supercars standings, with the Penrite Oil Sandown SuperSprint coming up next (August 19-21).

Samsung 990 PRO PCIe Gen 5 M.2 SSDs Confirmed Once Again, Blazing Fast Consumer Storage Speeds Imminent

Samsung’s next-generation 990 PRO SSDs featuring the PCIe Gen 5.0 M.2 protocol have once again been confirmed, this time by PCI-SIG.

Samsung’s Next-Gen 990 PRO PCIe Gen 5.0 M.2 SSDs Confirmed, Microsoft DirectStorage API Compliant & Pushing Storage Speeds To The Next Level

The Samsung 990 PRO Gen 5 M.2 SSDs were also spotted within the Korean RRA certification list earlier this month. We came to see two SSD configurations, a 1 TB and a 2 TB model which will be using Samsung’s own proprietary solution to power its next-gen SSD solutions.

While PCI-SIG only provides us the naming and confirmation that these are indeed PCIe Gen 5.0 M.2 certified SSDs, the earlier listing revealed two models, the “MZ-V9P1T0” and the “MZ-V9P2T0”. For reference, the existing Samsung 980 Pro PCIe Gen 4.0 SSDs are labeled as “MZ-V8P1T00”. One can come to the conclusion that these are Samsung’s next-generation 990 Pro 1 TB & 2 TB PCIe Gen 5 SSD models.

Samsung’s next-gen 990 PRO PCIe Gen 5.0 SSDs have been confirmed by PCI-SIG. (Image Credits: PCI-SIG)

It should be pointed out that Samsung has already launched its first PCIe Gen 5.0 SSDs for servers in the form of the PM1743 which offers speeds of up to 13 GB/s (random read) and 2,500K (IOPS). The drives come in up to 15.36 TB capacities but one shouldn’t expect such ludicrous capacities for the consumer platforms. We know that the next-generation PCIe Gen 5.0 SSDs are going to offer speeds of up to 14 GB/s and up to 8 TB capacities so this is also what we should expect from the Samsung storage solutions. We cannot confirm the full details yet but Samsung’s 980 Pro Gen 4 SSDs were one of the best solutions for the PCIe 4.0 platform until just recently as competitors started pushing out their top-of-the-line designs.

It remains to be seen if the vendor develops some brand new cooling solutions or thermal coating for the NAND & DRAM chips since the upcoming drivers are expected to run hot. Samsung already made a custom 980 PRO SSD with a heavy-duty industrial heatsink for the PS5 so something similar may be coming to the next-gen 990 PRO SSDs too. These SSDs will be ultra-fast consumer devices & will utilize Microsoft’s DirectStorage API to deliver the best performance.

Samsung could announce its next-gen 990 Pro 1 TB & 2 TB PCIe Gen 5.0 SSD solutions by end of the year or at CES 2022 as Gen 5 platforms from Intel and AMD will be readily available by then.

Canterbury Bulldogs name Cameron Ciraldo as NRL head coach from 2023

Cameron Ciraldo has signed a five-year deal to take over as Canterbury head coach next season.

The in-demand Penrith assistant has helped mastermind the defending premiers’ climb to dominance under Ivan Cleary.

However, Ciraldo has decided to take the step up into the head coach role at the Bulldogs after previously knocking back the Wests Tigers’ job.

Interim Bulldogs coach Mick Potter was keen to stay on after taking over from sacked coach Trent Barrett earlier this season.

However, Canterbury general manager of football Phil Gould wanted Ciraldo — who has been in various coaching roles at the Panthers since 2014 — to fill the position.

Ciraldo’s arrival at Belmore will likely keep star playmaker Matt Burton at the club.

Burton worked with Ciraldo at the Panthers before linking up with the Bulldogs this season.

“As the club continues to build for long-term, sustained success, we are pleased Cameron shares the vision of ensuring our football programs are best-in-class,” a Bulldogs club statement read.

The Panthers confirmed Ciraldo would depart the club at the end of the season.

“On behalf of all at Panthers, we would like to congratulate Cameron for his appointment as an NRL head coach,” Panthers chief executive Matt Cameron said in a statement.
