Manly Sea Eagles young gun Manase Fainu court hearing, stabbing

NRL rising star Manase Fainu has denied plunging a steak knife into the back of a church youth leader, saying he backed away from a wild brawl after he heard someone yell “knife, knife”.

Mr Fainu, 24, is standing trial in the Parramatta District Court where he has denied stabbing Faamanu Levi in his back near his shoulder during a bloody brawl outside the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at Wattle Grove on October 25, 2019.

Fainu has pleaded not guilty to one count of wounding a person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and he on Monday took the witness stand as he fights the allegations.

The court has heard that Mr Levi had earlier in the night spoken to two men who were involved in an altercation on the dance floor.

Mr Levi and his friends were later attacked by a group of men inside the church parking lot in a brawl in-between two parked cars but Mr Fainu said he played no part.

The Manly Sea Eagles hooker on Monday told the jury he went to the dance with his friends, including Uona “Big Buck” Faingaa, who the court heard was attempting to recover money he was owed from a man.

Mr Fainu said he saw two of his mates including “Big Buck” being escorted off the church grounds and followed them, apologizing to a security guard for his friend’s behavior on the way out.

CCTV played during the trial has shown Mr Fainu jumping the fence from a Coles car park back into the church grounds shortly before the brawl.

Mr Fainu has told the court he told his friends he would go inside to collect Big Buck’s money by himself, however his friends followed him over the fence.

He said he was walking through the car park to the chapel when he saw a brawl erupt about 10 to 15 meters away.

“I just saw something, like a brawl going on,” Mr Fainu said.

“I started, like, back-pedaling and walking backwards,” he said, arguing he knew he couldn’t defend himself.

The court has heard he had undergone shoulder surgery and his arm was in a sling at the time.

Asked by his barrister Margaret Cunneen SC if he had a knife that night, he said “no, mam”.

He said he never saw a knife in any of his friends’ possession and ran away when he heard someone yell “knife, knife”.

“I just saw (the brawl) for, like, a minute or two and then I ran away; I was scared for myself,” he said.

He said he took his sling off to jump back over the fence and while in the parking lot, he talked to his friends about the brawl.

Mr Fainu told the court he heard “Big Buck” say he “dropped someone” and none of his friends told him about someone being stabbed.

Mr Levi has previously told the court he did not see who stabbed him.

Witness Tony Quach last week told the court he saw Mr Fainu stab Mr Levi in the back during the brawl and could identify him from his sling.

“Sir, you were the one who plunged the knife into the back of Faamanu Levi on the 25th of October, 2019, weren’t you?” crown prosecutor Emma Curran asked

“No, mam,” Mr Fainu replied.

CCTV played to the court showed Mr Fainu in the parking lot with a white towel on his head.

He denied it was an effort to hide his identity, saying he had soaked it in cold water because he had a headache, adding it was a common practice at Manly training

The video showed him scaling a fire hydrant to get over the fence about 11.20pm.

He said he climbed the fence because it was the quickest way to get back into the church, despite telling Ms Curran he could have walked back in via the front gate because he wasn’t kicked out of the dance.

He said he thought he was going by himself but after he had got over the wall he realized his friends had followed.

“Why did you jump over?” Mr Fainu claimed he told his friends about him.

He said he told “Big Buck” and his other friends to “wait there” but “Big Buck” was angry and said “f*** that, I’ll go get it.”

“Why did you feel such a responsibility to Big Buck to go and get the money for him?” Ms Curran asked.

“Because I was the driver, I was just a good friend,” Mr Fainu said.

The trial continues.

New Hampshire father says things will never be ‘normal’ after tragic deaths of wife, 2 sons

NORTHFIELD, NH – The father who lost his wife and two young sons in a shooting at their home in New Hampshire last week said “things will never be ‘normal’ again.”

Sean Sweeney made his first public comments about the horrific incident in a Facebook post Sunday.

His wife, 25-year-old Kassandra Sweeney, and their 4-year-old son Benjamin and 1-year-old son Mason were found dead in their home on Wethersfield Drive in Northfield August 3.

Autopsies showed each died from a single gunshot wound and the medical examiner ruled all three deaths as homicides.

There have been no arrests and no one has been charged yet. However, Attorney General John Formella said Friday they have identified everyone involved in the shooting.

“Thank you to everyone who has spent the last few days ensuring that the random idiots online are properly informed and while I still am unable to confirm anything as to what happened and who is responsible I’m beyond words to those who just know better and are stopping my name from being dragged through the mud and for making sure the rest of the world knows that my beautiful wife was the most amazing, caring, sweetest all around good person that anyone could ever meet and just how much she loved our boys, Sweeney said in his post Sunday.

“It is our job now to keep their memories alive,” he added. “They will be forever loved and missed and forever in my heart.”

Formella said Friday investigators had spoken to Sean Sweeney.

“The father is somebody we have been in contact with who has been very cooperative and helpful in this investigation. Our victim witness advocate is working with him and his family in providing services. He’s obviously beyond devastated as a result of these crimes,” Formella told reporters.

Blizzard hitting less than 100M MAUs, sets up good press for fall releases

There was some troubling news for Activision Blizzard this week after it was confirmed that the number of monthly active users had decreased to less than 100 million. Microsoft has also revealed that the game developer has no must-have titles recently.

“There is nothing unique about the video games developed and published by Activision Blizzard that is a ‘must have’ for rival PC and console video game distributors that give rise to a foreclosure concern.”

Activision Blizzard's last earnings report surprised investors – changes disappointed fans

© Jae C. Hong | Associated Press

Activision Blizzard will have to change this image soon or be left in the dust by other game developers. It’s banking on Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 and Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 to do that this year. Blizzard’s reputation has also taken a hit, but manages to keep their loyal fanbase. However, player numbers are continuing to deteriorate.

Here was a recent statement from the developers in a press conference, following the news regarding the number of monthly active users in:

“The fourth quarter will usher in a new era for the Call of Dutyand franchise. Anticipation is high for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, planned for release on console and PC on October 28. The sequel to 2019’s Modern Warfare, the most successful Call of Duty title to date, will lead the most ambitious rollout yet across the franchise . An all-new Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 experience, tightly integrated with the premium game, will launch as an extension of the Modern Warfare universe later this year.”

The exact figures were also presented during the press release with only 94 million monthly active users in June. Just as concerning were the quarterly figures, which had dropped to 361m from last year’s 408m for this quarter. There hasn’t been such a drop since 2019 but this should definitely go up before the end of the year because of the releases of the two titles mentioned earlier.

The issue here is that this can’t be a temporary upswing and the statement from Microsoft suggests that there are larger issues at hand. There also seems to be a trend here with last season’s figures for this quarter also seeing a drop from the year before that. The increase in 2020 was perhaps due to the pandemic forcing everyone indoors.

Setting up for fall releases

Most game developers do see periods of such dips, with Microsoft themselves having gone through it in the past. There are still some exciting projects coming up from Activision Blizzard that should see more monthly active users. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II is set for a Beta in September, and an October release. Overwatch 2 and World of Warcraft: Dragonlight are also pretty massive games, both with large fanbases and releasing this fall.

All three games will likely bring a large enough user base to boost Activision Blizzard above the 100M mark, just in time for a per-acquistion investor call. The acquisition from Microsoft is yet to take place, and judging by recent comments, they have big plans for the developer and want to tap into some new ideas.

Wests Tigers won’t take legal action, but say ‘everyone knows’ they were robbed of a win against North Queensland Cowboys

Wests Tigers won’t appeal a loss to North Queensland despite the NRL granting it needs to clarify the captain’s challenge rule as a result of the controversy.

The Tigers still maintain the Cowboys didn’t have the right to challenge a play late in the game that allowed a match-winning penalty to be awarded.

But the club will accept the NRL’s call and not pursue legal action despite releasing a fiery statement declaring history would show the wrong team won the match.

“We extracted a concession from the NRL that the obstruction penalty which was given was erroneous and therefore, by implication, Wests Tigers should have won that match,” the statement read.

“We know it, everyone knows it… unfortunately, the history books will not record it that way.”

Tigers chairman Lee Hagipantelis and chief executive Justin Pascoe met with NRL heavyweights Peter V’landys, Andrew Abdo and Graham Annesley last Thursday.

The Tigers’ statement noted “robust and earnest discussions”, saying the NRL admitted sufficient ambiguity in the rule to allow their interpretation.

They said independent legal advice determined they would “reluctantly” not take further action, despite a senior counsel seeing “cogent” arguments.

The Tigers said they did not believe a legal challenge would be in the best interests of rugby league.

“Litigation is, at best, inherently risky and Wests Tigers is not prepared to commit to what would be speculative litigation, particularly in light of the cogent arguments which are available to both parties,” they said.

While the NRL accepts the last-second escort penalty given to the Cowboys was wrong, it does not agree with the Tigers’ complaint that no challenge was legally permitted as no penalty was made on the field and the siren went.

Coroner: Smoke inhalation killed at least 5 of 10 in fire

NESCOPECK, Pa. — Authorities say at least half of the 10 people found dead after an early morning fire in northeastern Pennsylvania died of smoke inhalation.

The Luzerne County coroner’s office said autopsies on the victims of the early Friday blaze in Nescopeck began Saturday. Examinations by Dr. Gary Ross were completed on three women, one man and a girl, the office said in a news release Saturday afternoon.

Determining the manner of death — classifying the deaths as accidents or homicides, for example — for the victims is pending the outcome of the fire investigation, the coroner’s office said. Positive identification of the victims is pending review of medical records, dental records and DNA if required, the coroner’s office said.

State police said seven adults ranging from late teens to age 79 were killed along with children aged 5, 6 and 7.

The county’s district attorney, Sam Sanguedolce, said a preliminary investigation suggests the fire broke out on the front porch at around 2:30 am on Friday. He said it appears that “the fire started and progressed very quickly, making it very difficult to get out.”

Nescopeck is a small town on the Susquehanna River, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) southwest of Wilkes-Barre. The house was on a residential street of largely owner-occupied, single family homes.

S1 Zeus: “I played very poorly. I’m incredibly mad at myself… I got greedy for POG votes, which led to misplays.”

On day 40 of the 2022 LCK Summer split, T1 defeated Nongshim RedForce 2-1 and secured a spot in round 2 of the playoffs. Despite NS showing fight in game 2, there was no upset in the series.

After the match, Choi “Zeus” Woo-je joined Inven to talk about his disappointment in his performance that day.

Zeus was brutally honest on his self-feedback:

“I played very poorly. I’m incredibly mad at myself. The Camille pick in game 1 was not only bad, but also played poorly on her. By taking Press the Attack on Renekton in game 2, I tried to pressure the enemy in lane very hard, but I couldn’t do that at all. I even died helplessly to a gank. In game 3, everything aligned for me to carry, but I couldn’t do that as well.

I actually practiced a lot of Renekton recently. I should’ve played better when he hit his power spike, but I didn’t. I couldn’t play as well as I could have. My opponents also played well, but there were things that were definitely disappointing on our end.”

On Renekton’s item build, Zeus commented,

“There’s a player on the Challenger solo queue ladder that takes Press the Attack and builds Blade of the Ruined King [BorK] into Prowler’s Claw. If that Renekton gets fed, then his damage output is insane. He can just delete the enemy bot laner, so I took reference from how he plays. I thought I could build the same way in game 2, but looking back, it may not have been so good. To be honest, the item build wasn’t the issue; the plays were. Ever since last year, I always seem to perform poorly on Renekton, so it’s a bit of a sore thumb in my career.”

However, there were some good things to take from the series for Zeus, as he added Renekton and Zac in the champions played during the Summer split. He tied with Kim “Canna” Chang-dong with 13 champions in first place.

“The fact that I had a chance to play the champions that I couldn’t on stage is a good experience in itself. There are so many champions that can be played in the top lane. The more champions I play, the more options I’ll have in the future, so I’m proactively trying to play different options in the top lane.

Zac is a very good champion when there are these prolonged, ‘wet noodle’ fights. Not only did my opponent first pick Ornn, Zac also seemed like the best option in that scenario. I practiced him quite a bit in solo queue recently, and he was really good. So I decided to try him tonight.”

On his performance on Zac in game 3, he also added,

“When there was that lane swap, I died trying to interrupt Kalista’s recall. That was when Ornn got ahead because he farmed a lot of waves. I thought that the damage was irreparable, so I decided to rotate bot lane to get our bot duo ahead. However, because of that, I fell behind in levels; I had to level E to get good engage angles, but due to such, I couldn’t find good jump angles. So I just jumped in whenever I saw potential angles.”

T1 has two matches remaining in the regular split, against Liiv SANDBOX and DWG KIA. On the matchups, I have commented,

“I think it’s more important for us to regain our form, rather than to focus on the opponents’ game plan. I recently received a lot of POG votes, so I got greedy, which led to my misplays. I’m reflecting on it, and I’ll make sure to put my team’s victory over my personal performance.”

Sir Nick Faldo breaks down crying in TV farewell retirement with Ian Baker-Finch

There wasn’t a dry eye on the desk when golf icon Sir Nick Faldo bid farewell to television after 16 years on the microphone.

The 65-year-old will withdraw from commentating, his final gig being the Wyndham Championship which Kim Joo-hyung won on Monday morning (AEST).

At the conclusion of the tournament, Faldo farewelled the audience and his three CBS colleagues – Australian great Ian Baker-Finch, Jim Nantz, and Frank Nobilo.

Faldo – a six-time golf major winner – suddenly broke down crying and could barely get any words out, at first only muttering, “I blew it”, as he was patted on the back by Baker-Finch and Nantz.

“I’m a single child and at 65 I found three brothers, thank you,” the English legend managed to say.

“So I was on a boat in Ireland… they gave me a call and said, ‘How would you like to sit next to Jim Nantz?’ I literally fell out of the boat. I really did. That was 2006, and here we are, 16 years later.”

Baker-Finch and Faldo shared a brilliant on-course rivalry during their illustrious careers, and the two men have shared the microphone for many years since as commentators and analysts.

The Aussie also broke down crying as he said goodbye to his close friend and colleague.

“We played together in the final round of 1984, in the final group on Saturday, that was the first time we got to meet,” Baker-Finch said.

“We played many final rounds, and many great rounds paired together over the years, especially in the Open Championships. I watched you in awe win in 1990 at St Andrews when we played in that final pairing together.

“You taught me so much, for that I’m grateful. I’m honored to have my name sandwiched between yours on the claret jug (The Open trophy) – (Faldo win) ’90, (Baker-Finch win) ’91 , (Faldo win) 1992 – I look at that all the time with great pleasure.

“I’m sad to see you go, like all of us are here, it’s so sad.”
