Phone company Circles. Life fined $300k by telco regulator over customer breaches

A telco company has been slapped with a $300,000 fine because it exposed nearly 2000 Australians to potential scammers.

Circles Australia Pty Limited, trading as Circles.Life, must pay a $199,800 infringement notice as well as $100,000 in compensation to fraud victims.

On Tuesday morning, the telco regulator, the Australian Communications and Media Authority’s (ACMA), announced the hefty costs.

Circles.Life breached the rules for phone number transfers a whopping 1,787 times when it sold SIM cards in retail stores between August and December 2021, according to the regulator.

The phone company was found to have failed to properly check the identity of purchasers, which meant cyber criminals then “took advantage of these lapses”.

As a result, 42 consumers experienced “fraud-related issues” which included their email and bank accounts being breached.

Of those, at least seven lost money to scammers.

The costly penalty is part of the ACMA’s broader crackdown on the telco industry, after implementing sweeping changes last month to combat phone scams which are on the rise.

The phone company should have adhered to multi-factor identification rules, according to ACMA Chair Nerida O’Loughlin.

“It is deeply concerning that Circles.Life did not have proper processes in place for such a long period and that so many people were affected or put at risk of identity theft and fraud,” she said.

“Combating these types of scams requires concerted action by all telcos and one weak link exposes all consumers to harm.

“It is the customers of other telcos who have fallen victim in this case by having their number transferred to Circles.Life without their knowledge.”

The ACMA also added that while the breaches should not have occurred, Circles.Life “responded quickly” when they realized the extent of the problem.

News.com.au has contacted Circles.Life for comment.

In a statement, the company said it had protocols in place for a one-time password verification for online port-ins, but the same rules didn’t apply for SIMs purchased at brick and mortar stores.

In April, the ACMA announced that phone companies will need stronger customer identity checks for “high-risk transactions” like SIM swaps, account changes or switching providers.

The new requirements, called the Telecommunications Service Provider (Customer Identity Authentication) Determination 2022, came into effect on June 30.

Since then, telcos must use multi-factor authentication of their customers’ identities such as confirming personal information and responding with a one-time code, similar to how banks operate. Before the changes, telcos mostly only required a customer’s name, phone number, date of birth and address to authorize a change.

The ACMA warned that noncompliance can lead to “strong action” including “pursuit of significant civil penalties” like in the case of Circles.Life and also potential Federal Court proceedings.

News.com.au has extensively reported on a particularly ominous phone scam known as a SIM swap hack in the past.

A SIM swap hack is when a cyber criminal ports – or re-routes – the victim’s mobile number onto their own phone, allowing them to intercept text messages and reset passwords to things like bank accounts.

In many cases, scammers were able to do so by impersonating the customer to their telco provider, then convincing the company to switch the SIM card over to an eSIM card.

Often the scammers will transfer the phone number to another provider to make it harder for victims to regain control of their account.

News.com.au reported on a Sydney man waking up to find $52,000 stolen from him by SIM hackers, while an Adelaide schoolteacher lost her entire life savings, $43,000, from a similar order.

Between 1 January and 30 September last year, there were at least 510 incidents of reported SIM swaps, resulting in 163 cases of financial loss, according to the ACMA.

These losses amounted to $4.68 million, with the largest single reported loss being $463,782.

Micron is producing faster GDDR6X modules, presumably for next-gen Nvidia GPUs

Prior to the launch of the RTX 30 series, Micron and Nvidia worked closely on GDDR6X memory to bring a speed boost to Nvidia’s graphics cards. Now, Micron has begun production of faster GDDR6X modules, seemingly in preparation for next-gen Nvidia graphics cards.

In an update to its website (via Videocardz), Micron revealed that 24Gbps GDDR6X memory is now in production, bringing a speed bump over the 21Gbps GDDR6X memory found on current-generation graphics cards. This news comes just a couple of months before the expected launch window for Nvidia’s next-gen GPUs. Currently, the RTX 4090, RTX 4080 and RTX 4070 graphics cards are expected in Q4.

Previously, only Nvidia has used Micron’s X-series memory. This was the case with GDDR5X and has been the case so far with GDDR6X. With that in mind, it is likely that Micron is producing these faster GDDR6X modules for new Nvidia graphics cards.

Nvidia has not yet made any official announcements for its next generation of GeForce graphics cards.

KitGuru Says: This is a pretty good sign that Nvidia is producing new graphics cards. Whether or not 24Gbps GDDR6X memory will be used on the first batch of new GPUs, or if it’ll be reserved for a high-end Ti or Titan series GPU, still remains to be seen.

The Block 2022 exclusive: How teams reacted to Joel and Elle quitting The Block

When the remaining block contestants were told Joel and Elle had left the show, most were confused and shocked by the sudden departure.

But not Tom and Sarah-Jane who sensed the Bondi couple might not have settled into life on the building site as well as everyone else.

Stream the latest episodes of The Block for free on 9Now.

“Something was just off, you could just tell something was off,” Sarah-Jane revealed in an exclusive video interview with 9Entertainment.

“We thought that because we’d just done a 48-hour challenge maybe that was so stressful for them, they were so sleep deprived and that’s why they were really stand-offish – but obviously they were not coping at all and that came across .”

For Ankur and Sharon, the abrupt exit was unexpected because Joel and Elle seemed “upbeat” when they chatted to the couple during their all-nighters in the 48-hour challenge.

“When I heard Joel and Elle were leaving it was more so that there must have been a massive reason for them to go,” Ankur said.

Sharon added, “I think it’s very easy to say ‘Oh they just gave up, too hard’ – I don’t think that’s fair because it’s OK to say it’s too much, it’s too hard or it’s not for us.”

EPISODE 1 RECAP: Five new teams arrive in the country and realize their tree change will be tougher than they thought

Dylan and Jenny were equally shocked with Jenny left wondering why Joel and Elle hadn’t mentioned their plans before leaving.

Dylan and Jenny wondered why Joel and Elle didn’t say goodbye. (Nine)

“I thought it was weird they didn’t say goodbye or didn’t tell anyone because we saw them the night before at judging, and they just told us they were going for dinner and they never came back,” she explained.

In contrast Omar and Oz had a great experience with Joel and Elle who said always made time to have a chat with them.

“It’s very hard to say any bad things about them, I think they’ll be very regretful of it but it is what it is,” Omar said.

The teams found out about Joel and Elle’s exit on the day of The Block‘s promo shoot. This was meant to be their third day on set and followed the House Decider challenge bedroom judging, where Joel and Elle received some harsh feedback about their design choices.

Host Scott Cam broke the news to contestants and explained Joel and Elle had said The Block “is not on brand for them”.

It wasn’t long after executive producers had told him the pair had quit and he was still processing the news when he spoke to the teams.

“We weren’t quite sure why they left, because they didn’t actually mention it to us. The thing is, The Block‘s not for everybody and we wished them well, but we just didn’t know why they’d left, and to get to the bottom of that you’ll probably have to ask them,” he said.

Joel and Elle’s exit meant a new team had to be found at the last-minute.

“It was a bit of a shock, because I know the opportunity that The Block presents and we weren’t ready for that, but that’s all right. We scrambled, we got another new couple and they were fantastic. So, an opportunity lost is an opportunity gained for someone else.”

READMORE: Scott Cam’s house renovation so far

While Scotty’s co-host Shelley Craft wasn’t on set when it happened she wasn’t as shocked as the others because she knows how tough The Block es.

“I can’t believe it hasn’t happened before,” she told 9Entertainment.

“You know, it’s not for everyone. It’s bloody hard, and there are much easier ways to have your 15-minutes [of fame]. The Block is virtually impossible until it’s done, and then the reward and the amount of just personal growth that comes out of it is enormous.”

West Bromwich Albion 1-1 Watford: Ismaila Sarr scores from own half, then misses penalty

Ismaila Sarr celebrates
Ismaila Sarr has been linked with a move back to the Premier League this summer

Ismaila Sarr scored a spectacular David Beckham-style chip from his own half but then had a late penalty saved as Watford drew with West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns.

Despite being second-best for most of the match, Watford took the lead in sensational style on 12 minutes when Senegal forward Sarr took down a clearance, nudged the ball out from under his feet and coolly lifted it over the stranded David Button from almost 60 yards.

That came against the run of play, Watford keeper Daniel Bachmann having already been kept busy, with one superb save from Darnell Furlong’s volley and two from Karlan Grant – and there were more to follow as new man Jed Wallace again showed his class.

But Albion found an equalizer two minutes into first-half added time when Grady Diangana’s fine lofted pass found Grant, who took the ball down excellently before finishing right-footed from close range.

Watford remained on the back foot for much of the second half, yet they came closest to winning it when Sarr went down easily in the Albion penalty area under pressure from Semi Ajayi.

But Sarr’s spot-kick was tame, struck far too feebly to Button’s left – and the Albion keeper swooped to save.

It leaves Rob Edwards’ Watford with four points from two games, going into their next game – when they host another side with four points from two games – Vincent Kompany’s Burnley, at Vicarage Road on Friday.

They will both have an early chance to overtake Blackburn Rovers, the only side with a 100% record in the Championship after two games.

Steve Bruce’s Albion, by contrast, have now lost just three of their past 14 Championship games – and, although they have only drawn the first two matches, the Baggies have come from behind in both.

And, although they were hampered by the loss of big money January signing Daryl Dike with a thigh injury, they should still have plenty to feel positive about when they head to Blackburn on Sunday.

From the Sarr-blime to the ridiculous…

Sarr stole the show and made all the headlines as he unleashed his early contender for goal of the season with such a stunningly audacious piece of impudence – a wonder strike that drew comparison with any other goal in this very limited genre.

A young Beckham’s entrance on to football’s big stage, with that amazing effort at Selhurst Park in August 1996 maybe tops the bill,.

Only just ahead of similar pieces of brilliance from the likes of Xavi Alonso, Charlie Adam, Wayne Rooney or Nayim (from the halfway line) for Real Zaragoza, to cost Arsenal the 1995 European Cup Winners’ Cup.

But none of them, having netted from nearly 60 yards, then went on and missed from 12 yards in the same game.

Just as Sarr’s goal was sublime, his missed penalty was bordering on the ridiculous – as poor a spot kick as could be imagined.

‘A moment of genius’

West Bromwich Albion boss Steve Bruce told BBC Sport:

“Sometimes you don’t always get what you deserve, but that’s as good as I’ve seen us play and to do it against such a good side made it feel even better.

“It’s very frustrating that we didn’t go on to win but it was still a tremendous reaction from the players after conceding such a wonder goal against the run of play.

“It’s desperate news that we have lost Daryl Dike with a thigh injury in training. He so wants to play for his country at the World Cup, he’s a popular lad and he knew as soon as he’d done it.”

Watford manager Rob Edwards told BBC Sport:

“It was an incredible strike from Sarr. As soon as it left his foot I knew it was in.

“A moment of genius. It’s pretty special when you see a goal like that – and against the run of play too.

“It would have been pretty unjust if we had nicked that second goal from the penalty as Albion were up for it and were clearly the better side. But I’d have taken it.”

South-east Queensland infrastructure funding not keeping pace with development, majors say

The mayors of two booming south-east Queensland councils say funding for critical infrastructure to support hundreds of thousands of incoming residents is falling short of demand.

Ipswich, Logan and Moreton Bay councils on the west, south and north of Brisbane are all doing the “heavy lifting” of welcoming south-east Queensland’s booming population.

But Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding and Logan Mayor Darren Power both say they need more funding to build trunk infrastructure — roads, stormwater, public transport and community facilities — to cope with the influx of new residents expected over the coming decade.

“To me there’s an inequitable distribution of how the money is being spent,” Ms Harding said.

“We’re the fastest growing area in Queensland yet we’re not getting that corresponding funding.”

Mr Power said Logan was “getting the rough end of the pineapple” without any major infrastructure commitments such as new sporting facilities.

“We’re [welcoming] 10,000 people a year, Ipswich is doing 6,000 a year, Moreton is probably doing more than us, and … we’re not even getting the infrastructure,” Mr Power said.

“They’re putting all the Olympic facilities in and around the city [but] forget Logan — you’re going to do the heavy lifting, but we’re not giving you anything.”

Population on the up and up

South-east Queensland’s population is expected to grow by 2 million people to 5.3 million by 2041.

Moreton Bay’s population will rise by 210,000 to 690,000 by 2041.

Ipswich is predicted to increase from 240,000 to 520,000 people by 2041.

Logan expects to grow from 345,000 in 2021 to 500,000 in 2036.

All three councils are now developing new planning schemes as they grapple with where to house so many new residents.

Priority Development Areas were designed by the state government to house thousands of new residents.(ABC NewsAlice Pavlovic)

Councils are also working with the state government on a new regional plan to replace 2017’s Shaping SEQ, expected to be finalized in the next two years.

Deputy Premier Steven Miles said almost 50,000 new residential lots had been unlocked since October 2020.

“We understand that it’s not just about unlocking new lots to help with housing availability, we also need to ensure that people, goods and services can efficiently move around and that there is access to affordable housing, green space, schools and health services,” Mr Miles said.

Priority development areas

State agency Economic Development Queensland manages three 12-year-old south-east Queensland priority development areas (PDAs): Ripley Valley in Ipswich, and Greater Flagstone and Yarrabilba in Logan.

Ripley Valley is set to house 131,000 people, Flagstone 138,000, and Yarrabilba 50,000.

The newest PDA is Caboolture West in Moreton Bay, set to house another 70,000 people, with negotiations now focused on the suburb’s critical infrastructure.

The state charges property developers in PDAs a per-lot infrastructure contribution.

Flagstone’s is set at about $47,000 per residential lot, of which $5,000 is a “catalyst” charge for critical infrastructure, and $1,000 for public transport.

In Ripley, the developer charge is about $35,000 per lot.

distant communities

Caboolture West and Ripley Valley are within 15 minutes’ drive of their city centers, but both Yarrabilba and Greater Flagstone PDAs are 20 to 30 kilometers south-west of Logan Central, nearly 30 minutes’ drive.

“We would never, never develop Flagstone and Yarrabilba, because it’s too far away and it’s stretching our resources,” Mr Power said.

“[EDQ is] expecting us to fill in the gaps between where the developer [contribution] ends and where Flagstone and Yarrabilba starts.”

Mr Miles said a $150 million Catalyst Infrastructure Fund provided money to developers to “accelerate” infrastructure within PDAs.

“To date, EDQ has provided $45 million to the Ripley Valley PDA and $106 million to the Greater Flagstone PDA in catalyst infrastructure funding to assist in providing significant trunk infrastructure to facilitate development,” Mr Miles said.

Three-scheme Ipswich

For Ipswich, planning problems are three-fold.

Ipswich has two masterplanned communities — Ripley Valley, and the city of Springfield, masterplanned by a private owner to become an entire city.

Only last week, the council sent off a fast-tracked new planning scheme to Mr Miles for review, to replace its current 16-year-old scheme.

Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding.

“That’s three planning schemes for us to work with, three different ways to interact with the state government, and developers as well,” Ms Harding said.

And while more new homes means more rates in council coffers, it will still take decades to recoup millions spent now on new roads, water and sewers.

regional funding

Ms Harding said she wanted a clear commitment that the regions facing the most growth would receive funding proportional to their needs.

“If there’s a regional plan where a council is being asked to commit to certain population growths, I would like some type of commitment for a corresponding amount of money or proportion of money spent on trunk infrastructure,” she said.

“Because it’s not happening at the moment.”

Mr Miles said the $50 million Growth Acceleration Fund would help fund critical trunk infrastructure outside of PDAs, including Caboolture West.

He also cited the $1.8 billion City Deal, which includes a $210 million “growth areas compact”, funding Caboolture West infrastructure, and business cases for Logan and Ipswich transport corridors to Flagstone, Yarrabilba and Springfield.

“I look forward to continuing to work with all Mayors to plan for and invest in South East Queensland’s growing future,” Mr Miles said.

Biden tours flood-ravaged Kentucky as White House highlights climate crisis | Joe Biden

Joe Biden on Monday toured parts of eastern Kentucky devastated by the worst flooding in the state’s history and pledged to help recovery, while his spokesperson warned that the climate crisis was having an impact on such events there and across America.

At least 37 people have died in the flooding since a deluge late last month that dropped up to 10.5in of rain on Kentucky in only 48 hours.

The US president said the nation had an obligation to help all its people, declaring the federal government would provide support until residents were back on their feet.

Behind him as he spoke was a house that the storm had dislodged and dumped on the ground, tilted sideways.

“We have the capacity to do this it’s not like it’s beyond our control,” Biden said, adding that “the weather may be beyond our control for now” but pledging “we’re staying until everybody’s back to where they were.”

Earlier in the day, en route from his holiday home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, having emerged from coronavirus isolation, to Kentucky, Biden hailed historic health and climate action legislation that passed the tough hurdle of the US Senate on Sunday.

He called the Inflation Reduction Act, which could pass the House and be on the way to his desk to sign into law by the end of the week, “a big deal” and said he expected it to help Democrats’ prospects in November’s midterm elections , which had been looking bleak.

Then, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre addressed the issue of climate change in her media briefing aboard Air Force One on the way to Lexington with Biden and the first lady, Jill Biden.

“The floods in Kentucky and extreme weather all around the country are yet another reminder of the intensifying and accelerating impacts of climate change and the urgent need to invest in making our communities more resilient to it,” she said.

Jean-Pierre called measures in the new bill “so vital”, alongside previous infrastructure legislation that aims to boost climate resilience.

“Over the long term, these investments will save lives, reduce costs and protect communities like the one we are visiting today,” she said.

Independent analysis of the Inflation Reduction Act shows it should slash America’s planet-heating emissions by about 40% by the end of the decade, compared with 2005 levels.

This cut would bring the US within striking distance of a goal set by Biden to cut emissions in half by 2030, a target that scientists say must be achieved by the whole world if catastrophic global heating, triggering escalating heatwaves, droughts and floods, is to be avoided.

Biden has called climate change the “existential crisis of our time” and the president had been under pressure in recent weeks to declare a national climate emergency, as the legislation that passed the Senate on Sunday had seemed out of reach, while record heatwaves and wildfires were ravaging the American west.

On Monday, Kentucky’s governor, Andy Beshear, said the flooding was “unlike anything we’ve ever seen”. It followed deadly tornadoes in the western part of the state that killed almost 100 people last December.

Last week, China cut off defense and climate talks with the US amid aggressive military exercises in the Taiwan Strait, in retaliation for House speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, the island democracy that claims independence but which Beijing claims is part of the communist People’s Republic of China.

More than 1 in 3 Aussies say they will never be able to buy a home, study reveals

More than one third of aussie don’t think they will be able to buy a home despite property prices falling in 2022, a new study has revealed.
A significant 37 per cent of Australians say they don’t think they will ever be able to afford to buy a home in 2022, marking an increase on the 23 per cent of Aussies who said the same thing last year, according to new research by Finder.

Among gen Z non-homeowners – Australians aged 25 and below – the percentage who feel they will never be able to afford property has increased from six per cent in 2021 to 15 per cent this year, the research has shown.

Among millennials – those aged 26 to 41 – the amount feeling they will never be able to buy has increased from 21 per cent to 34 per cent.

Finder home loans expert Richard Whitten has said it is sad but understandable that many young people are worried about the prospect of owning a home.

“House prices have skyrocketed over the past few years, and have become downright ridiculous in some areas,” he said.

“But with economists predicting a recession and interest rates finally rising from their rock-bottom lows, it’s likely we’ll see house prices fall in the second half of 2022, especially in Sydney where prices can be more volatile.”

Investment bank Jarden has forecast that property prices in Australia could fall by as much as 20 per cent over the next 18 months.

However, Whitten has suggested a ‘small’ decline in house prices may not mean much after the significant price growth in recent years.

Less people thought it was a good idea to buy property in July than 18 months earlier. (SMH)

“That said, the situation should improve as interest rates continue to climb, and prices fall further,” he said.

The Finder research further showed that only 33 per cent of Australians believed it was a good time to buy property in July, compared to 67 per cent of people thinking it was a good time in December 2021.

Whitten has advised people wanting to save to keep their money in a high-interest savings account as interest rates continue to rise.

“Share trading is also a way to build wealth, and you can get started with as little as a dollar with some platforms, or even investing your spare change through micro-investing apps,” he said.

Finder surveyed 2521 people around Australia who don’t own a home online for the research.

Owner Roland Le Gal says the section has been prone to flooding since a subdivision was built on a marsh at the rear of the property.

Gigabyte M27Q X – Review 2022

Gigabyte has proven a reliable gaming monitor manufacturer, delivering high-refresh-rate QHD monitors at affordable prices. The company delivers again with the Gigabyte M27Q X ($529.99), a 1440p monitor that, like the Gigabyte Aorus FI32Q before it, comes equipped with just about everything you want and need from a gaming monitor. It may not be a 4K panel, but it more than makes up for its lower resolution in performance, bringing a whopping 240Hz refresh rate and a host of unusual features, including an onboard KVM and plenty of ports. It’s a great performer, though low brightness levels and a so-so contrast ratio keep it short of top marks.

Design: With Gaming Monitors, Sometimes Simple Is Better

Simplicity is always a plus when it comes to tech that makes PC gaming enjoyable, and the Gigabyte M27Q X delivers just that. The 27-inch monitor sports thin bezels on three sides of the screen, while the Gigabyte logo takes up the bottom strip, giving the monitor a utilitarian design. That’s not to say it’s ugly. Rather, it’s family friendly. The display is connected to an adjustable (albeit noisy when in motion) stand that rises and drops about 5 inches. The V-shaped base offers ample support, though there’s no tilt or swivel to speak of.

Gigabyte M27Q X side view

Size-wise, the monitor measures in at 21 by 24.2 by 7.6 inches (HWD), about the same size as most other 27-inch monitors we’ve reviewed, like the MSI Optix MAG274QRF-QD. It’s also only 11.6 pounds, much lighter than the ViewSonic Elite XG270QG or Sony Inzone M9. That’s with the stand, of course. If you choose to ditch the base and fasten your monitor to a VESA mount or arm, the panel alone is a mere 7.7 pounds.

Taking a look at the display itself, the 27-inch “Super Speed” IPS panel technology promises a 1,000:1 contrast ratio, in addition to a VESA DisplayHDR 400 rating—both claims we’ll run tests against later. Fast IPS displays, known under various marketing names, claim to deliver response times four times faster than normal IPS displays, thanks to a thinner liquid-crystal layer and higher driving voltage. The screen supports AMD FreeSync Premium, and is rated for a 1ms gray-to-gray (GTG) response time.

Gigabyte M27QX KVM

Behind the monitor, you’ll find two top-firing 2-watt speakers and an analog stick for controlling the onscreen display (OSD). Above the stick, you’ll find a button for the built-in keyboard/video/mouse (KVM) feature, which allows you to control multiple attached devices with a single mouse and keyboard. To take advantage, you have to plug your mouse and keyboard into the monitor and then tether a compatible second PC or other device using a USB-C cord. (The device must support DisplayPort over USB-C.) Press the KVM button, and voila: You’ve switched which computer shows on the display, and shifted the input devices to it.

The KVM might steal the show in terms of unusual features, but the I/O hub in the back has plenty worth mentioning. All the essentials are here: one DisplayPort jack, two HDMI 2.0 ports, one earphone jack, three USB 3.0 ports (two downstream, one upstream), and one USB-C port. There is no HDMI 2.1 port, but the high-bit-rate 3 (HBR3) DisplayPort jack offers plenty of bandwidth to hit the monitor’s peak refresh rate, full color depth, and HDR at the same time.

Gigabyte M27Q X back side

Perhaps the best part of all of this is that the Gigabyte M27Q X often can be found at well less than its list price—we’ve seen it, at times, down closer to $400 than $500—placing it in budget monitor territory for its kind, if only just barely.

Testing the Gigabyte M27Q X: Refresh Rate Highs, Contrast Ratio Lows

The Gigabyte M27Q X proves itself a real contender for gamers who appreciate seeing the fruit onscreen of their video card’s high frame rates. But to really understand how it compares with other monitors on the market, we’ll run it through our standard gaming monitor tests using Datacolor’s SpyderX Elite tool and its companion software. First, we test the display in its default picture mode with an SDR signal. Here, the Gigabyte M27Q X reached a brightness of just 210 nits and a black level of 0.93, which yields a contrast ratio of just 230:1. That’s well under the promised 1,000:1 rating.

The higher the contrast ratio, the deeper the blacks and the brighter the whites a monitor can produce. It makes a huge difference in picture quality, especially during dark scenes in gameplay. Since 1,000:1 (the standard for IPS panels) is the lowest contrast-ratio rung among gaming monitors, the 230:1 ratio is that much harder to swallow.

Keep in mind that we test all of our monitors fresh out of the box at factory settings, so that doesn’t mean there aren’t ways to improve the brightness level. For example, switching over to the monitor’s Movie mode made a significant difference, measuring 430 nits of brightness in SDR mode. Your viewing environment is also important to consider, as a lower brightness reading might benefit a user who is in a well-lit room, for example.

Switching to HDR mode provided better results, but not by much. The brightness more than doubled from the default SDR setting, to 408 nits, nailing the promised DisplayHDR 400, working out to a contrast ratio of 600:1.

On the flip side, while the contrast was low, the color gamut results were pretty good, as Gigabyte M27Q X registered 100% of sRGB coverage, 96% of Adobe RGB, and 93% of DCI-P3. These are better results than some other QHD monitors we’ve looked at, like the Razer Raptor 27.

Color accuracy also fared pretty well, with an average Delta E result of 1.66. When parsing color accuracy, a higher Delta E number means common colors tend to stray from the “purest form” of a color—a rating of under 1 is the sweet spot for true color. This is likely more important to those who work with content creation tools and will be less important to your typical gamer. Those who put that factor first are better off checking out a monitor better suited for photo editing.

Media and Gaming Performance

If you’ve read our monitor reviews before, then you’ll be familiar with this next part: Response time is not the same thing as input lag. Input lag is the amount of time it takes for the monitor to display a signal, while response time is the time it takes for pixels to change from one color to the next.

Gray-to-gray or GTG measures how long it takes for a pixel to transition from one gray level to the next. It’s not a standardized measure, though, because vendors measure levels differently. The same applies to other measurements like black-white-black (BWB) and white-black-white (WBW).

Instead of testing for response time, we test for input lag using the HDFury Diva Matrix. In this case, the Gigabyte M27Q X measured a very good input lag of 1.6 milliseconds. You might’ve already guessed, but when it comes to input lag, the smaller that number, the better. While other monitors like the Corsair Xeneon 32QHD165 do measure under 1 millisecond, the difference here will be unnoticeable except, perhaps, in edge cases at the far extremes of competitive esports.

Non-gaming viewing was great, with no glare detected no matter the viewing angle. And of course, the games looked great, too; I detected no noticeable ghosting when playing Halo Infinite or Guardians of the Galaxy.

Refresh Rate and Resolution Find a Middle Ground

The Gigabyte M27Q X provides itself a sweet-spot monitor, thanks to its 240Hz refresh rate and QHD resolution. Its contrast and brightness, especially compared with the Gigabyte Aorus FI32Q, hold it back from earning top honors, but gamers looking to reach blazing-high frame rates—without their wallet bursting into flames—will find a value-priced 1440p monitor here worthy of praise.

Kanye West, Kim Kardashian: Insta post mocks Pete Davidson saying ‘Skete is dead at 28’

Kim Kardashian is reportedly furious with Kanye West over a poor taste post on Instagram targeting Pete Davidson who the reality TV star had recently broken up with.

The rapper, 45, shared a screenshot of a fake newspaper front page with the headline “Skete Davidson dead at age 28” on Instagram on Monday, reported the US Sun.

West has now deleted the post, apparently following Kardashian’s intervention.

The photo was a mock-up of the New York Times and was dated Monday, August 8 2022.

West has been using the nickname “Skete” for Davidson, 28, for months.

West’s latest post comes just days after it was revealed that Davidson and Kardashian have split following nine months of dating.

The Kardashians star and former SNL funnyman have broken up, and decided to just be friends, E! News reported late last week.

A source said: “They have a lot of love and respect for each other but found that the long distance and their demanding schedules made it really difficult to maintain a relationship.”

An insider later claimed Kardashian broke up with Davidson because she was “totally exhausted” by his “immaturity” and their 13-year age gap.

The split occurred sometime last week, according to the site.

Kim ‘incredibly upset’ with West

But despite the break up Kardashian has come into bat for Davidson saying the Insta meme posted by West was “appalling”.

“Kim won’t stand for this. She is demanding that Kanye take the post down, but he won’t,” a source told the Daily Mail.

“She has been vigorously defending Pete. Ella she’ll never get back together with Kanye over the way he’s treated the people she loves and respects.

“She won’t stand for this type of behavior from him.”

the new york post had further details from Kardashian sources.

“Kim is livid and incredibly upset … Kanye is back to his old ways and Kim will not tolerate his bullying behavior towards the people she loves and cares about,” a source close to the SKIMS founder told the Post’s Page Six column.

The musician – who has four children with Kardashian. – repeatedly targeted Davidson on social media after he began dating Kardashian in October.

He called Davidson a “d**khead”, threatened to “beat his a**” and accused the actor of trying to “destroy” his family in various rants.

Davidson has been spending part of the summer in Australia working on his new movie, David Michôd’s comedy Wizards!

The split comes amid rumors that Kardashian and West have reconciled.

They have four kids together – North, nine, Saint, six, Chicago, four, and Psalm, three.

The SKIMS founder filed for divorce from the rapper in February 2021 after nearly seven years of marriage.

However, Kardashian has seemingly dropped several hints recently that the two may be back on.

Earlier this month, she wore white bikini bottoms, and a matching white top that says “The Incredibles.”

Fans pointed out that West once talked about his love for the Disney movie, The Incrediblesduring an interview on Keeping Up With the Kardashians.

Kardashian has also taken to wearing clothes from West’s label Yeezy again.

Just last week, she posed with her daughters North and Chicago while all three of them wore Yeezy sunglasses.

They rocked black leather outfits and matching silver oversized shades in the series of selfies and photos.

One wrote: “YEEZY SHADES I’M TELLING YOU THEY’RE BACK.”

Another added, “They were cute together though for real,” and a third posted: “Kimye is alive.”

LIV Golf texts between Greg Norman and Sergio Garcia revealed

Text messages exchanged between Greg Norman and Sergio Garcia in the lead-up to LIV Golf have emerged.

Golfers who joined Norman on the Saudi-backed LIV Tour face an indefinite ban from the PGA Tour, and a group led by Phil Mickelson is suing them for antitrust violations, claiming the Tour does not have the authority to levy that punishment. As part of that suit, the golfers presented text messages between Norman and Garcia, who joined the rebel tour in June.

The text messages reveal Garcia was relaying the PGA Tour’s plans to execute the bans on golfers when the LIV defections occurred.

After sending brief pleasantries on February 11, Garcia got down to business, texting Norman: “I just wanted to see how things are going with the League, cause it seems like a lot of those guys that were loving it and excited about it last week , now are s***ting in their pants.”

Norman responded: “Morning. All going very well. I have not heard the white noise of s***ting their pants. Who are you referencing so I can run a check?”

Garcia answered that it was “some of the younger guys” and that he thought “the (PGA) Tour reached out to them and scared them a bit and because they are young, I think it worked”.

Norman was adamant that the PGA Tour did not have the legal standing to issue a ban.

“If you have names I can reach out to them,” he texted.

“In regards to the Tour if they were going to ban players they would have already. They know they cannot hence no action outside of verbal threats. If you can get them or any player threatened to get it (in writing) fantastic. Thanks.”

The text messages in the lawsuit were uncovered by Dylan Dethier of Golf Magazine.

Six days after the initial exchange, Garcia informed Norman that the “Tour has told our managers this week that whoever signs with the League, is ban(ned) from the Tour for life! I don’t know how are we gonna get enough good players to join the League under (these) conditions. What do you think.”

Norman again assured Garcia that this would not be legally possible.

“They cannot ban you for one day let alone life,” Norman texted. “It is a shallow threat. Ask them to put it in writing to you or any player. I bet they don’t. Happy for anyone to speak with our legal team to better understand they have no chance of enforcing.

“Who said there would be a lifetime ban? And to whom? You? Or your agent? What are they saying specifically? Important to know these facts. Also I will get something to show you why they cannot.”

Garcia explained his understanding of what had happened.

“The commissioner had a meeting with the 5 or 6 biggest agencies of golf managers, mine included, and first told them that if any of their players had signed with the (LIV) league, that they should leave the room and after that they talked about what the (PGA Tour) is going to do going forward and that whoever signs with (LIV) they would be (banned) from the (PGA Tour) for life. I would love to get it in writing but I doubt they will do that,” he wrote.

Garcia ultimately joined LIV Golf after an epic meltdown directed at the PGA Tour in May.

Star golfers who have reportedly earned over AU$143 million apiece from LIV Golf include Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau.
