Suburbs struggling the most amid RBA’s interest rate hikes revealed

An estimated one in five mortgage holders – or 551,000 Australians – will struggle to pay back their mortgage if interest rates continue to rise as expected.

Comparison site Finder found a whopping 20 per cent of mortgage holders will be in serious mortgage distress if their home loan interest payments increase by three per cent. Home loans have already increased by 1.75 per cent since May.

It comes as separate data from S&P Global revealed which suburbs in Australia are most at risk of defaulting on their home loans.

The Northern Territory came out as the worst state, with the highest percentage of mortgage holders more than 30 days behind on payments.

A fringe suburb in Perth topped the list in terms of debt overdue to the bank, while Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide as well as some regional areas also received a poor rating.

Of even more concern was that the research was conducted before the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) starting increasing the cash rate, meaning these areas will be even more at risk of defaulting on their loans now.

For four consecutive months the RBA has hiked interest rates. Last week, after its August meeting, the central bank brought up the cash rate to 1.85 per cent.

The cash rate has already risen by 1.75 percentage points since May, following two years of interest rates sitting at a record low of 0.1 per cent.

According to S&P Global, rising mortgage repayments have hit suburbs on the fringes of big cities the hardest.

Their research measured the weighted average of arrears more than 30 days past due on residential mortgage loans in publicly and privately rated Australian transactions.

The Perth suburb of Maddington, 20km from the city centre, topped the list of “Worst performing postcodes” in the report.

As of early April, 4.67 per cent of homeowners in Maddington are in arrears.

That was closely followed by Dolls Point, located in southern Sydney.

Of the mortgaged houses in that NSW suburb, 4.33 per cent are behind on payments.

In third place was another WA postcode, Byford, in Perth’s southeastern edge, with an arrears percentage of 4.16 per cent.

Western Australia had one more suburb on the list – Ballidu in the Central Midlands – while NSW had a total of four.

Bankstown and Castlereagh, from Sydney’s west and southwest, were also experiencing substantial pressure. Katoomba from the Blue Mountains, south of Sydney, also earned a spot in the report.

Victoria, Queensland and South Australia each had one suburb on the list – Broadmeadows in Melbourne’s north, Barkly in Queensland’s Mout Isa region and Hackham, an outer suburb of Adelaide.

A breakdown of each state showed that the Northern Territory was the most behind in its mortgage repayments, at a rate of 1.75 per cent.

Western Australia came in at 1.40 per cent, as of April this year, before interest rates started to be hiked.

Victoria received a score of 0.87 per cent while 0.85 per cent of NSW mortgage holders were also in mortgage arrears.

The ACT fared the best, with an arrears rate of only 0.33 per cent.

Overall, the national average was 0.71 per cent for Australia’s arrears rate, as of April.

“The swift pace of interest rate rises will create debt-serviceability pressures for households with less liquidity buffers and higher leverage,” the report noted, forecasting that sometime in the third quarter of this year a higher arrears rate would show up in new monthly date .

Finder also released a damning statistic about the state of Australia’s home loan debt.

A recent survey conducted last month concluded that more than half a million homeowners would be “on the brink” if interest rates rose by three per cent.

Of those, 145,000 Australis said they would consider selling their home if rates jumped because they would “struggle a lot” to repay them. That represents about five per cent of Australia’s mortgage holders.

The survey also found that 14 per cent of admitted respondents they might fall behind on their repayments or other bills.

Nearly half (48 per cent) would be able to manage, but would have to cut down on their spending, according to Finder.

Only a quarter of participants said a rate rise would not change their lifestyle or spending habits at all.

Netflix Games Are an Absolute Failure – Review Geek

The Netflix logo and a gamepad.

Less than 1% of Netflix users are engaging with the company’s mobile game offerings, according to Apptopia (via CNBC). About 1.7 million subscribers have downloaded Netflix’s 24 mobile games 23.3 million times since the company launched the gaming apps in late 2021.

The failure to engage its audience with games coincides with an exodus of users from the streaming giant. Netflix lost nearly a million subscribers in the first quarter of 2022 and 200,000 in the second quarter. The service also hiked its prices for all its streaming plans in January.

Company executives anticipated that it would take some time for them to succeed in the gaming market. Last year, COO Greg Peters stated, “We’re going to be experimental and try a bunch of things, but I would say the eyes that we have on the long-term prize really center more around our ability to create properties that are connected. to the universes, the characters, the stories that we’re building.”

Netflix’s games are often associated with popular shows like stranger things and The Queen’s Gambit. Games are downloaded separately from the mobile Netflix app through the iOS and Google Play app stores.

Despite a lackluster first year, Netflix isn’t giving up on its gaming venture. The company intends to expand its game offerings from 24 to 50 by the end of 2022.

Thong Has Officially Been Revealed On The Masked Singer Australia

The Masked Singer Australia has unveiled the face behind maybe my favorite costume of all time: thong. And Thong was in fact bonafide Aussie legend Pia Miranda all along. Yes, the rhyme was intentional.

Yes, current Josie Alibrandi of Looking for Alibrandi fame. Nineties and noughties Aussie kids just let out a collective gasp.

And look, Miranda may not have won The Masked Singer Australia but she did actually win Australian Survivor: Champions v Contenders. There is a bona fide Australian screen icon on our hands here.

How can you not love that little Thong face? I’m dazzled by the smile.

The judge’s guesses for this one were, in a word, rogue.

Hughesy insisted Thong was rapper Iggy Azalea, despite there being no rapping. In fact, Thong performed P!nk’s song ‘So What’. Not exactly an Azalea tune.

Chrissie Swan initially guessed Carly Rae Jepsenbut then switched to Bindy Irwin at the last second. Both guesses were wrong so she shouldn’t feel too bad.

Mel B went for RubyRose whereas Abbie Chatfield guessed Fisher Island.

In maybe the tensest battle since the Australian Federal Election, Thong faced down against Blowfly in the battle. I am only slightly devastated it wasn’t to Sisqo’s ‘Thong Song’, but perhaps that would’ve been an unfair advantage.

The clues shrouding Thong’s real identity were:

clue 1: I’m Thong, and I’m elastic like rubber!

clue 2: Nobody notices Thongs, that’s fine by me! It worked in my favor big time!

clue 3: That looks tender.

clue 4: My childhood dreams faded, but art can imitate life.

clue 5: I love this car! It’s ageless and doesn’t need to spend much time in the garage.

Clues 6: I’m a cleanskin now, but I wasn’t always.

Clues 7: I’m Thong, and I will be champion again!

Honestly, I think the clues confuse me more.

If you’re desperate for more Thong content, you can catch up on The Masked Singer Australia on 10Play.

The Penrith Panthers Stadium budget blowout that will blow your mind

1. “Government says a 25,000-seat new stadium will cost $300m. This is nonsense.

two. “The going rate for new stadia is between $15,000 to $20,000 per seat.

3. “This means a 25,000-seat new stadium at Penrith will range between $375m to $500m.

Four. “Current construction industry price escalator is between 5% to 7% per annum.

(I looked that up and it means how much a bid can be expected to actually cost when it’s finally finished, taking into account the annual rise in building costs.)

“So for a new stadium assuming three-year construction, add another $70m to $100m at least in escalation.

5. “These costs do not include compulsory acquisition of paceway.

(They do harness racing at the Penrith Paceway, and that is where they want to build the new stadium.)

6. “Paceway land currently valued at $20m. This is land only.

Are you still with me, tree people? God bless you, I am singing for you too. Onwards!

7. “Of course to move the paceway to new site will also need the government to fund associated infrastructure for new paceway – track, training facilities, steward facilities, drug testing, stables, training facilities, clubhouse, grandstand, seating, betting facilities.

8. “Estimated cost of this around $80m. So added all up you get a new stadium with a total cost of well over $500m, and more likely closer to $600-$650m.”

Staggering, yes?

My source points out that a refurb on existing site is engineering-wise very easy and would be much more cost effective. (And all the more cost effective, can we agree, if – and stay with me on this one, because it is a revolutionary idea – the Panthers kicked in some money, too?)

For those who still doubt his figures, my source had an even neater way of calculating its likely final cost.

“Parramatta Stadium (30,000 seats) opened in April 2019 at end cost of $360m = $12,000 per seat.

loading

“Allianz, which will open in two weeks, 42,000 seats at total end cost of $820m = $19,500 per seat. Right there is a glaring example of the cost escalation in just a couple of years.

“So Penrith at 25,000 seats on today’s construction cost of $19,500 per seat will be $500m if they start this year. Of course they won’t. So by the time they do tend (2023) the cost will have escalated another 7% minimum = $535m to start if they are lucky. Este [stadium] will end up costing in excess of $600m given a three-year construction time frame.”

My source had one last killer point.

“There has been almost no focus or scrutiny of even more largesse to the NRL:

“Almost $200m in two rounds for centers of excellence, which is for the exclusive use of NRL clubs. There is even less justification for these. A few weeks ago the government announced round two of funding, with $130m for four more centers of excellence. Dragons gifted $50m! Of course you can bet your life, the final cost of these centers will far exceed the figures contained in the announcement (given construction industry price escalations.)”

All up, you get the drift. I always knew this kind of expenditure was outrageous. Until drawing on the inside knowledge of this expert, I had no idea just how outrageous.

Premier Perrottet, you received a lot of deserved kudos for standing up to the NRL. But the job’s not done. Stop the Penrith outrage, too. Refurb instead, instead, despues de you refurb Leichhardt Oval, to at least make it safe!

Yes, the NRL will hate you. But they already hate you, and in this struggle between the needs of the people and the needs of the NRL, you have already demonstrated that you get the needs of the people must come first. I humbly submit you need to act on that instinct once more.

Launceston thief who scooped coins from monkey enclosure pond ‘now at risk of herpes’

An intruder who broke into a snow monkey enclosure to scoop coins from a pond could have unwittingly exposed themselves to “potentially fatal” herpes, with authorities urging them to seek immediate medical attention.

Tasmania’s City of Launceston issued a press release today, following the break-in at the City Park monkey enclosure on Tuesday night.

The enclosure, which houses a population of macaques — established as part of a sister-city relationship with Ikeda in Japan — is popular with tourists and locals, who toss coins into the pond.

Major Albert Van Zetten said the intruder caused damage to an electric fence and stole “coins out of the surrounding moat”.

“Unfortunately, this action has potentially exposed the intruder to the herpes B virus, which is carried by the City Park monkeys,” Mr Van Zetten said.

The macaque enclosure is a popular tourist attraction in Launceston.(Wikipedia)

“The virus is not considered a risk to the monkeys and exhibits symptoms similar to that of cold sores in humans.

“However, it is potentially fatal to humans, with more than 30 known deaths recorded worldwide… [and] only one confirmed case of human-to-human transmission.”

Mr Van Zetten said symptoms of viral infection included “blistering, pain, numbness near the infection point, flu-like symptoms, including fever, muscle aches, headache, and fatigue, respiratory distress, encephalitis and neurological dysfunction.”

Most macaques around the world carry diseases, authorities said.(City Of Launceston)

The majority of macaques around the world carry the virus and there is signage at the Launceston enclosure stating that the monkeys on-site are infected.

Mr Van Zetten said Tasmania Police and the Tasmanian Department of Health “have been advised of the break-in”.

“We ask that anyone with information regarding the break-in contact Tasmania Police immediately.

“But importantly, council urges the intruder to seek medical attention as a matter of some urgency.”

Air NZ brings home its largest planes from US desert amid surging flight demand

Air New Zealand is bringing home its 777-300 after almost 700 days in an American desert.

In 2020, the airline sent four of its largest plans – the 777-300ER – to a storage facility in Victorville, California, in the Mojave Desert amid Covid-19 decimating international travel.

At that time it was unknown when they would return.

But now, given the sheer demand for flights, the airline is bringing its largest widebody jet aircraft out of hiding to bolster its network.

Air New Zealand chief operating officer Alex Marren said one of the most exciting things about bringing back these aircraft is the airline is going to hire and rehire people to service them and the rest of it fleet.

“Since April 2021, we have welcomed back around or hired more than 2000 people across cabin crew, pilots, maintenance, engineers and airports and we’re looking for more,” Mr Marren told news.com.au.

“In our cabin crew alone we’ve hired and rehired around 1000 people, all of whom are really excited to welcome customers on-board.”

Mr Marren said when the hard decision was made to park their 777 fleet, they knew the desert was an ideal environment due to its warm and dry conditions.

“After being stored for almost two years in this climate, they are coming out of long term parking in good condition,” he added.

He explained it takes around six to eight weeks to get a desert-based 777-300 ready to fly and the team are working with a local maintenance provider to reanimate its aircraft out in the desert.

“The process starts off with a good wash to get rid of the dust and grime that has accumulated in long term parking out in the Mojave Desert,” Mr Marren said.

“Our engineering teams then remove the protective shrouds and materials on the wheels, sensors and wings and undertake a thorough servicing and maintenance program to get these aircraft serviceable and ready to fly again.”

He said a lot of work goes into making sure the aircraft is ready to fly — including servicing the wheels on the landing gear to checking upholstery and the in-flight entertainment system.

When is takeoff

The first 777-300 aircraft, registration ZK-OKP, is due to leave Victorville in late August for

Auckland where it will have scheduled maintenance before rejoining the 777-300 operating

fleet from late September.

It can carry up to 342 customers with up to 154 cubic meters of cargo capacity available.

“It’s a welcome change from the type of flying our operating aircrew did through the height of the pandemic and for those stepping back onto a 777-300 for the first time in more than two years, it will be an emotional reunion with one of their favorite aircraft,” Mr Marren said.

ZK-OKP is the first of four Victorville-based 777-300 aircraft to be reanimated and the airline

is working through a program to bring back the three remaining aircraft over the next

year. The airline also has three 777-300 aircraft that were stored in Auckland for the last two

years. Two of these aircraft are back in service, with 777-300 ZK-OKO due to re-enter service

in the coming weeks.

Murder at Castle Nathria impressions

Hearthstone’s latest expansion, Murder at Castle Nathria comes with 135 new collectible cards, a new keyword, and a new card type. And of course, these new cards include many new, legendary hero cards that will surely shake the current meta and keep you on your toes!

I’ve been playing the game for the past week with the new expansion cards and loved the many deck possibilities – with the Priest and Mage being my favorites for this expansion.

New collectible cards

Thanks to Blizzard, I was gifted the Hearthstone: Murder at Castle Nathria Mega Bundle (that you can purchase separately) to check the cards out. The Murder at Castle Nathria Mega Bundle includes 80 Murder at Castle Nathria card packs, 5 Golden Murder at Castle Nathria card packs, two random Murder at Castle Nathria Legendary cards, the Sire Denathrius Warrior hero skin, the Denathrius card back, the Sandy Shores Battlegrounds Board, and 10 Mercenary Packs.

After opening the packs, here are some Legendary cards that I’ve got:

Priest

If you are playing a Priest Deathrattle deck (I used to play this and the annoyance it gives to your enemies is satisfying enough), Masked Reveler is an awesome choice for a board control + a quick summon of your more powerful Deathrattle minions. You can also play Creepy Painting and then sacrifice a Deathrattle minion to become a copy of it.

I actually enjoy my new Priest deck that steal cards from the enemy players’ decks. The new expansion totally suggests and encourages this deck, and it creates a hectic, random, dynamics on every game (since it depends on what kind of deck is your enemy playing). If you are planning to play this “stealing cards” deck, you can add Invitation Courier, Identity Theft (which is a must-have card for this deck), The Harvester of Envy, and Mysterious Visitor.

This was my deck for a while because every game is a challenge that you must overcome, and every game also creates a new, weird combo that you wouldn’t know exist (since it combines the cards that the enemy is playing with your own cards ). However, it also creates randomness which can make you lose the game as there won’t be any synergies with your deck.

Criminal Lineup is a late card with 8 mana but if you can summon 3 copies of a very powerful minion, you are guaranteed to win.

mage

After playing the Mech-deck for some time (with the Mage and Paladin classes), I’m happy to make the “Skeleton Mage” deck to be my primary deck. It is so fun and I have a win rate about 80-90% so far with this deck. Thanks to new Volatile Skeleton and all the cards that utilize this new minion like Cold Case, Deathborne, Nightcloak Sanctum, and the ultimate card – Kel’Thuzad, the Inevitable, you’ll get massive random 2 damage per Volatile Skeleton that can clear the whole board or win you games.

I combine my deck with Sire Denathrius (that you can get without having to craft it) and Mordresh Fire Eye, just in case I don’t get enough Volatile Skeleton summons to seal the deal. Thanks to Magister Dawngrasp, I can make the Hero power more and more powerful as the game progresses. As long as I keep stalling while gathering one of these three “sure-win” combo, it’ll always be a win even during a very late, late game.

Just check out this screenshot on a recent game I played, where I could hold my ground barely with the deck and still win at the end!

Otherclasses

I haven’t explored the other classes’ decks because I’m having so much fun (and lots of wins) using my Frost Mage deck. But there are few cards worthy of a mention here. For example, Shaman’s Criminal Lineup is a late card with 8 mana but if you can summon 3 copies of a very powerful minion, you are guaranteed to win. The Warrior’s Riot is a great board clear while keeping your minions alive, assuming you have enough minions on the board to begin with. The Paladin class also has many cool ones like Buffet Biggun and Steward the Steward if you are playing Silver Hand decks. I’ve also seen many Warlock class players creating a new Imps deck, which is quite devastating with all the buffs when you have Imps in play.

New Keyword: infuse

Infuse gets triggered each time a friendly minion die and if you have Infuse cards in your hand, the cards can transform into a more powerful version. The requirements are varied as some cards can only get powerful after you sacrifice enough number of minions, but other cards will gain something each time a friendly minion dies, like Sire Denathrius.

New Card Type: Locations

Locations are new cards that can be played on the battlefield with just the initial cost. It has abilities that you can activate (for free) with -1 durability cost and has a 1-turn cooldown. These cards can only be removed with a card like the Demolition Renovator.

Murder at Castle Nathria is probably one of the best Hearthstone expansions so far. It adds many, new collectible cards with many great, new, fun, synergies and none of them feel too strong or ridiculous to counter. I’m honestly having great fun with the latest expansion and find that I’ve been playing Hearthstone more often than before with the latest expansion.

It’s definitely a great time to come back to Hearthstone and utilize these new expansion cards and make a whole new, fun deck of your own!

Tracy Grimshaw dramatically stops interview with Olivia Newton John’s grieving niece

Tracy Grimshaw was forced to abruptly end an interview with Olivia Newton-John’s niece after admitting she’d pushed her grieving relative ‘too much’.

The iconic Grease star died peacefully at the age of 73 at her home in southern California on Monday, surrounded by her family and friends.

Tottie Goldsmith, 59, revealed her aunt Olivia’s health had deteriorated in the days leading up to her death after decades of fighting breast cancer and was ‘really skinny and unwell’ in the days before her passing.

The former Neighbors actress broke down when asked what Olivia was ‘most proud of’ after more than eight minutes of intense grilling from Grimshaw.

‘Hang in there, are you OK,’ Grimshaw said after Goldsmith burst into tears.

Goldsmith replied that Newton-John was proud of her 36-year-old daughter Chloe Lattanzi.

‘She loved her girl so much, and her husband, and all of us. And the hospital, the work she did, but Chloe, she loved her girl so much.

‘Chloe is doing it really tough, but she is amazing. I’ve been in touch with her a lot, and she is incredible.’

Grimshaw replied: ‘I’m going to let you go because I think I probably pushed this too much with you.’

However, the A Current Affair host threw in one last question, asking if the family would accept Victorian Premier Dan Andrews’ offer for a state funeral.

‘We will on behalf of the family, but I think Australia needs it, she’s so loved. I think our country needs it, so we are going to accept it, but I won’t cry at that. I’m so sorry, it’s just happened today’ Tottie said as she broke down again.

‘Darling, you can cry. I won’t let you cry anymore, but it’s good to see you, and it’s a terrible day,’ Grimshaw finished the segment.

Earlier in the interview, Tottie revealed Olivia’s final days when the legendary singer’s health had taken a turn for the worse.

‘It’s not a shock, we’ve known how sick she’s been, especially in the last five days,’ she told host Tracy Grimshaw of her passing.

Tottie then went on to reveal her heart-wrenching final moments with Olivia, continuing: ‘I couldn’t get to America in time and I wanted to say goodbye, so I asked [her husband John] if he could hold the phone up to her ear… But he got me on FaceTime so I managed to see her.’

‘I told her all the things I needed to say,’ Tottie continued. ‘She was leaving us… but I feel like she got it.’

Tottie went on to reflect on Olivia’s decades-long battle with cancer.

‘There was one day at the Olivia Newtown John Center and she was really skinny and unwell and I said to her, “Are you afraid of dying”, and she said, “Plonker, I’m not afraid. I’ve done more in my life that I could have ever imagined.”‘

‘She’s struggled with a lot of pain and it’s been a tough road,’ Tottie added.

‘It wasn’t just the cancer that got her. It was other complications and being in a hospital with a very susceptible immune system.’

Tottie is best known for her turn in the pop group, Chantoozies, who had hits with their songs Witch Queen, He’s Gonna Step On You Again, Wanna Be Up, and Love the One You’re With in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Her father Brian Goldsmith, a renowned night club owner and restaurateur in Melbourne, died in 2020. Her mother is Olivia’s sister, Rona.

Tottie appeared with her aunt at G’day USA in LA in 2020 – where Olivia candidly spoke about beating her cancer.

‘Gosh, life is a gift and I’ve had an amazing life and I intend to keep going with it and I want to help other people with cancer of course,’ she told DailyMail.com in the January 2020 interview.

‘I have my wellness center in Melbourne and I want to see an end to cancer in my lifetime so other people don’t have to suffer.’

Olivia was first diagnosed with the disease in 1992 but announced she had overcome the cancer in 2013, the year after her Wellness Center first opened, but in May 2017, she was told cancer had metastasized and spread to her bones.

Reflecting on her fight to beat the condition, she admitted: ‘I don’t see it as a battle. I don’t think about it a lot, to be honest.

‘Denial is a really good thing and I’m getting stronger and better all the time! I am doing well!…I am feeling wonderful.’

She also admitted that she had hope for her future, adding: ‘I’m winning over and living with it well and that’s how I see it.’

Newton-John also reflected on her delight at still being remembered for Grease more than four decades after its release.

She confessed: ‘We did something very special together. That movie is still loved.’

She recalled how caring co-star John Travolta was during the filming of the musical romantic film.

Asked about her favorite memory on set, she relied: ‘His kindness to me. When there was one scene in the movie – it was my close up, when Rizzo pulls me forward in the bonfire scene – and in the middle of my take, he stopped it and came over to me and whispered in my ear: “I think you can do better.”

‘So that’s really generous. For an actor to do that for another actor. I wasn’t as experienced as him. He was very nurturing and sweet.’

During that same event, lifelong friend Travolta praised her positive outlook on life, despite her health worries.

He said: ‘Olivia is a survivor and she’s smart and she’s got a lot of life in her and I think she looks at it from the glass half full always and that’s her beautiful, natural approach towards life and I think we all need to do that.’

Basketball legend Lauren Jackson named in World Cup squad after 12 year absence | Sport

Basketball legend Lauren Jackson will suit up for her fifth World Cup after a 12 year absence, making her return to the national team. The 41-year old has been included in a 12-strong Opals team for the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup which gets underway in Sydney on September 22.

Retiring from international basketball nine years ago, Jackson’s last World Cup appearance was in 2010. The four-time Olympic medalist and three-time WNBA MVP had a dominant and decorated two-decade career across the globe until she was forced into retirement in March 2016 due to persistent knee injury.

Jackson moved into basketball administration after her playing career, working for WNBL club Melbourne Boomers before moving to Basketball Australia to head up the league and oversee women’s hoops in the country. But after starring for Albury-Wondonga in the recent NBL1 season, Jackson earned a call-up to an Australian squad camp in June before impressing in Opals practice matches in New York last month.

“Congratulations Lauren Jackson, you’re going to another World Cup,” Opals coach Sandy Brondello announced via video call. “You should be incredibly proud, Lauren, and I’m incredibly proud because what you did to achieve this is really amazing. It shows a lot about you as a person and your hard work and dedication.”

Jackson wept when Brondello told her of her selection. “There were a lot of emotions when Sandy rang me, I had a bit of a cry to be honest,” Jackson said. “I have been working my body hard, and I didn’t honestly know if it was going to hold up to my intense training regimen, but it has and I’m feeling good.”

After her retirement, Jackson revealed she experienced the “shakes” as she weaned herself off prescribed medication she’d relied upon during her playing career. In a 2018 Fox Sports documentary, the daughter of two national basketball players also spoke of struggling with lack of support from the basketball fraternity in retirement.

But Jackson also revealed she’d started training again in her home town, in the hope of suiting up for the local team Albury-Wodonga Bandits. Four years later, and 27 years since she first made the Opals squad as a 14-year-old, she’s back in the green and gold.

Brondello, herself a four-time World Cup athlete, said Jackson deserved her spot. “Making the final cut to twelve is always difficult with so many great athletes pushing for selection,” Brondello said. “The training camp in New York demonstrated how much each of these athletes wanted to compete on home soil, the competition for a spot on the team was fierce.

“Of course, the inclusion of Lauren is the talking point but from my perspective, she has put in the work and deserves to be here, she will add another dimension to our team dynamic.”

The Australians are looking to improve on the silver medal they won in 2018 in Spain under current coach Sandy Brondello. The Opals are ranked No 3 in the world, and have drawn Group C, with pool matches against France, Serbia, Japan, Mali and Canada.

Underlining the experience in the squad, Bec Allen and Cayla George will return for their third tournament and Marianna Tolo, Steph Talbot, Sami Whitcomb, Tess Madgen and Ezi Magbegor are playing in their second World Cup. Sara Blicavs, Darcee Garbin, Anneli Maley and Kristy Wallace will make their debut.

There are five current WNBA players including Allen (New York Liberty), Magbegor (Seattle Storm), Whitcomb (New York Liberty), Wallace (Atlanta Dream) and Talbot (Seattle Storm).

Missing is Liz Cambage, the former champion, who controversially drew from last year’s Tokyo Olympics squad under a cloud over allegations she made racist remarks to rival Nigerian players. The 30-year-old Cambage last month split with WNBA franchise the Los Angeles Sparks after just 25 games – a ‘contract divorce’ that also has the four-time All Star Center unlikely to play for Australia again.

The World Cup tips off on September 22 in Sydney.

Australian Opals 2022 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup Team: Bec Allen, Sara Blicavs, Darcee Garbin, Cayla George, Lauren Jackson, Ezi Magbegor, Tess Madgen, Anneli Maley, Steph Talbot, Marianna Tolo, Kristy Wallace, Sami Whitcomb.

Rabia Saddique’s husband, WA doctor Anthony Jenner Bell, charged with domestic violence

A magistrate in Fremantle has lifted a suppression order, allowing the reporting of a domestic violence charge against a prominent WA doctor accused of assaulting his wife, human rights lawyer Rabia Saddique.

St John of God doctor Anthony Jenner Bell has pleaded not guilty to the aggravated assault of Ms Saddique in Mount Pleasant.

An interim suppression order was in place until this morning, when Magistrate Adam Hills-Wright lifted it.

The court heard Dr Bell had sought the suppression order to prevent his identity from being reported.

Magistrate Hills-Wright said Dr Bell had stated in an affidavit that the complaint against him was made in the context of a separation.

Dr Bell also suggested the allegations were “baseless” and said the complainant had expressed a desire to “ruin his life”.

He said his wife had suggested she would do this by using connections with people in the media.

Dr Bell also stated that reporters had contacted St John of God asking whether his position was under question.

He said his employer was supporting him, but if the matter got into the media, it could lead to him being stood down and he may not be able to see some patients.

Not in interests of justice: magistrate

Magistrate Hills-Wright said Dr Bell was presumed to be innocent.

He said publicity increased the community’s understanding of how the justice system worked, and for a suppression order to be made, the court had to be satisfied there were exceptional circumstances.

While widespread publicity could cause “significant embarrassment”, the court process applied “equally for all”, he said.

Magistrate Hills-Wright said the court was being asked to weigh the potential wider ramifications for patients and institutions.

He told the court suppression was not in the interests of justice.

Dr Bell is scheduled to appear in Perth Magistrates Court next month for a trial allocation date.
