New documents from the Johnny Depp v Amber Heard trial have been unsealed – and things have only got uglier | Arwa Mahdawi

Hear that nervous click-click? It’s the sound of celebrities quietly removing their likes from the victorious Instagram statement Johnny Depp posted after winning his libel case against his ex-wife, Amber Heard, earlier this year. Approximately a gazillion words have been written about the case, so I’m sure I don’t need to recap it. In brief, though, Depp sued Heard for a 2018 op-ed piece in which she said she was a victim of domestic violence but she did not explicitly name him as the culprit. The televised trial was a sickeningly sordid spectacle – one lawyer described it as the “litigation equivalent of Squid Game. Heard endured merciless mocking and walked away with her reputation for her in tatters, while Hollywood largely rallied around Depp.

Now, however, it seems that attitudes toward Depp might be souring. Twitter detectives have noticed that more than a dozen celebrities appear to have “unliked” the actor’s Instagram post over the past two months. That list includes Bella Hadid, Halle Bailey, Amanda Knox(!) and a bunch of other people I’ve never heard of but are apparently very famous.

What could be behind this Great Dislike? Probably the fact that more than 6,000 pages of court documents were recently unsealed, providing a lot of unpleasant new information about Depp. Funnily enough, Depp fans were the ones responsible for thrusting this information into the public eye – they crowdfunded the fees required to get hold of the unsealed documents, which contain allegations that lawyers for Depp and Heard managed to keep out of the trial itself. The idea was to dig up dirt on Heard, but their efforts seem to have backfired: the documents are packed with nasty nuggets of information about Depp and illuminate the extent to which his legal team weaponized misogyny throughout the trial.

One of the nastiest bits of information in the documents might be the claim that Depp’s legal team tried to submit “nude pictures” of Heard into evidence and attempted to bring up her “brief stint as an exotic dancer”. It’s not clear what nude pictures they were referring to, and these were ultimately not relied on in the trial. But, in 2014, Heard’s iCloud account was hacked and hundreds of naked photos of her were released online, causing her understandable distress. If Depp did try to have these photos trotted out in a televised trial, it looks a lot like revenge porn – pure nastiness designed to humiliate Heard. It’s also a horrible reminder that if a woman doesn’t lead a perfectly chaste life, the world will find a way to cast her as a “slut” who is responsible for anything that happens to her.

It has been reported that It has also been reported that in the unsealed documents were: text messages from Depp’s then assistant about the time the actor allegedly “kicked” Heard on a flight; Depp’s legal team’s cynical attempt to implicate Heard in the death of a friend who died in a car accident; the fact that Heard willingly walked away from “tens of millions of dollars” she was entitled to in her divorce proceedings with Depp; a statement from Depp saying Heard had never caused him physical or mental injury; disturbing text messages between Depp and the musician Marilyn Manson, who has been accused of abuse by more than a dozen women, all of which he denies; claims that photos and audio tapes submitted by Depp had been digitally manipulated and edited.

While none of this makes Depp look good, it is important to note that it’s not as if he looked like a boy scout in the first place. This is a guy who lost a libel case against the Sun in 2020 after the newspaper described him as a “wife beater”. This is a guy who joked with a friend about how they ought to murder Heard. “Let’s drown her before we burn her!!!” he wrote. “I will fuck her de ella burnt corpse afterwards to make sure she’s dead.” Depp has a well-documented history of toxic behavior and yet, throughout the trial, there was a very long line of people ready to dismiss his bad behavior from him while jumping on any excuse to paint Heard in a negative light. Will the information in the court documents significantly change people’s minds about Depp and Heard? Beyond some celebrities distancing themselves from Depp, I doubt it. If the trial showed us anything, it’s that misogyny is more alluring to many people than facts.

NRL 2022, Sydney Roosters, Tedesco 200 games, milestone man in good company with Brett Stewart and Billy Slater

As Roosters skipper James Tedesco prepares to step foot onto the hallowed turf of the SCG for his 200th NRL game, his place among rugby league’s great fullbacks is assured.

A story that had a harrowing beginning in 2012 with a torn ACL in his debut game, has blossomed into a modern-day masterpiece, and there’s plenty more chapters to be written yet.

At 29, Tedesco is at the peak of his powers, both as a leader in his craft and a leader of men, so more glory at club, state and international level is well within his grasp.

One aspect of his game that occasionally gets overlooked in the blur of dancing feet, meter-eating exploits and an unbreakable work ethic is Tedesco’s ability to find the tryline.

When talk turns to gun number ones with a penchant for four-pointers, the names Billy Slater and Brett Stewart roll off the tongue, followed in quick succession by Matt Bowen, Rhys Wesser and 302-game Rooster Anthony Minichiello, who scored 102 of his 139 career tries at fullback.

Ever since the ‘Little Master’ Clive Churchill changed the fullback’s focus from defense to attack, the man at the back has been evolving from try-saver to try-scorer and try-creator, chiming into the backline to deliver sweetly timed cut-out passes to grateful wingmen.

From the time the young Tiger Tedesco chased down a Robbie Farah grubber to bag his maiden try in round five, 2013, to career try No.108 courtesy of a Joseph Suaalii assist against the Knights three weeks ago, he has been a constant threat to opposition defences.

Tedesco finishes blindside raid by Roosters

Like Stewart and Slater before him, Tedesco has an uncanny knack of being in the right place at the right time, knowing where to run and who to run off to make best use of his sublime skills and speed.

After notching eight tries in 19 games in his first full season in 2013, Tedesco found the stripe in 12 of his next 16 matches, eventually finishing with 50 tries in 90 games for the Tigers before hopping aboard the bus to Bondi in 2018.

The Roosters had made it to a preliminary final in 2017 and the addition of Tedesco and Cooper Cronk proved to be a master stroke as they powered to back-to-back premierships in 2018-19, the 14th and 15th titles in the foundation club’s proud history.

Tedesco’s first year at the Roosters yielded him nine tries as he found his feet and established combinations with Cronk and Luke Keary in the halves and the gifted Latrell Mitchell at left centre.

Come 2019, and ‘Teddy’ was ready to explode, peeling off 15 tries in 21 regular season games before scoring in each of the Roosters’ three finals, against the Rabbitohs, Storm and Raiders.

On the grandest of stages on grand final night, with the scores locked 8-8 and eight minutes to play, Keary launched a short side raid from the Roosters’ 40-meter line… an all or nothing play born of unwavering confidence in his own ability and that of the men around him.

Rd5: Storm v Wests Tigers (Hls)

As he hit the halfway line, Keary found Mitchell who delivered an audacious flick pass to Daniel Tupou, the giant winger seemingly covering 20 meters in four strides before looking inside and finding Tedesco, looming in support as he had done all season long.

With a tense and tight decider in the balance, four of the defending premiers’ big guns had stood tall, conjuring a try for the ages, the 77th and possibly most cherished of Tedesco’s glittering NRL career.

A career that already has him being spoken of as one of the great fullbacks, to which you can most certainly add great tryscoring fullbacks.

Building commissioner’s resignation letter referred to ICAC

Premier Dominic Perrottet has revealed a confidential resignation letter from the NSW building commissioner has been referred to the state’s independent corruption watchdog.

David Chandler resigned abruptly last month, prompting speculation about the circumstances of his departure amid scrutiny over the conduct of recently dumped minister Eleni Petinos, to whom he reported.

Perrottet on Wednesday revealed during question time that Chandler’s resignation letter was sent to the secretary of the Department of Customer Service, who referred it to the Independent Commission Against Corruption on August 1.

Petinos was sacked over workplace bullying allegations the day before the letter was sent to ICAC. She had denied the bullying allegations.

“This is a personal letter related to an employment matter. I’ve been advised by the secretary that appropriate action was taken by her in relation to the contents of the letter,” Perrottet said.

“Out of the abundance of caution, the letter was provided to the ICAC for information.”

The NSW opposition on Tuesday said it would use Legislative Council powers to compel the government to release the letter after it was revealed that Petinos met representatives from a property development company that employed former deputy premier John Barilaro. The letter is expected to be released to the upper house on Thursday.

The opposition has queried the meetings between Petinos and Coronation Property, given a stopwork order had been placed on one of its major projects. Chandler had oversight of stopwork orders and whether to revoke them. It is not yet known whether Chandler’s resignation letter relates to that issue.

Both Petinos and Barilaro have issued statements saying that Barilaro was not in attendance at a June 2 meeting between Petinos and Coronation Property.

Treasury Wine Estates (TWE) wins Chinese court case against Rush Rich

Treasury Wine Estates has secured a win in China’s highest court against a company it alleges is a copycat operator that has been exploiting the ASX-listed winemaker’s Penfolds brand.

Treasury has been involved in a six-year legal battle with Rush Rich in Australia and China over allegations the company had been copycatting the Penfolds brand in China.

Penfolds is the jewel in the crown for Treasury Wine Estates, which is doing better than expected in the June half.

On Wednesday, Treasury confirmed it had a landmark win against Rush Rich in the Supreme People’s Court of China, which found Rush Rich’s registration of Chinese characters for its brand that sound similar to Penfolds was not valid.

The court decision was made in the context that Rush Rich acted in “bad faith” and had been engaged in illicit conduct, given that the company had also registered a large number of trademarks for other luxury brands including Bentley, Treasury Wines said in a statement .

Penfolds managing director Tom King thanked Chinese authorities for their commitment to protecting the integrity of the company’s brand.

“Our long-term commitment to China, together with international legal protections to prevent infringement of our trademarks, gives our consumers the confidence to continue enjoying award-winning quality wine from the Penfolds collection,” he said.

Penfolds has brought a number of cases against Rush Rich since 2016, and won them all, including a Federal Court action over infringement of its brand.

Treasury’s global director of intellectual property, Anna Olsen, said the business would always prioritize the protection of its brands.

“We’ll spare no effort to protect our brands and will pursue our rights to the highest courts where necessary,” she said.

The Sandman: Netflix’s glossy adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s beloved story

In a story filled with magic and fantastical elements, it’s only fitting that the streaming adaptation of The Sandman is something of a miracle.

Attempts to mount The Sandman, based on Neil Gaiman’s immensely beloved comic books, has been ongoing since the early 1990s. It went through so many rounds of development, it was starting to become like Lucy and the football.

It’s safe to assume then that for The Sandman devotees, this Netflix miniseries is like a gift from the gods, or in the series’ parlance, the Endless, the immortal beings which personify concepts such as dreams, death and destiny.

But what if you’re not a mega-fan? What if you haven’t spent the past 30 years waiting for your screen dreams to be realized? Will The Sandman offer the same intoxicating allure?

Yes and no. The series is definitely high fantasy, which means its complex world can be dense and a little inaccessible at times. Of course, if you’re well-versed in the genre – and fantasy is the de jour in pop culture – then it shouldn’t prove too onerous.

Still, newcomers may struggle for the first few episodes as they wrap their heads around The Sandman‘s deep lore. And the pacing of the show struggles in the early half of the series as you bed yourself into its demanding narrative.

But if you stick it out until at least episode five, the stylish and visually arresting series really pays dividends.

For the uninitiated, The Sandman centers on Dream/Morpheus (Tom Sturridge), an Endless who rules over the Dreaming as well as humanity’s sleeping selves. When Dream is kidnapped by an early 20th century occultist (Charles Dance), he spends one hundred years in captivity.

When he is finally freed, he finds his realm in disarray and various threats on the loose. Dream must journey across realms, encountering a raft of characters who help and hinder his quest to restore order.

The Sandman is structured as episodic television, which means there are highs and not-so-highs depending on the focus. You also get a murderer’s row of guest stars who pop in, such as Gwendoline Christie’s (game of Thrones) arch Lucifer Morningstar or Jenna Coleman (Doctor Who) as the wily Johanna Constantine.

While tonally consistent, each episode can vary wildly. A standout is episode six, co-starring Kirby Howell-Baptiste (The Good Place) as Death, Dream’s sister. She and Dream venture through a sequence of Death meeting various people at their life’s end and it’s a beautiful and poignant 20 minutes of storytelling.

Another episode features David Thewlis (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban) as the pained man John Dee, who uses Dream’s enchanted ruby to expose people’s darkest wants while Jenna Coleman’s chapter is steeped in the philosophies of regret.

That’s The Sandman‘s strength, the way it imaginatively weaponises its wider story to explore smaller stories about love, time, loneliness, friendship and the shadows that lurk where we dare not look.

Not every episode hits you in the same way just like not every emotion has the same effect. What felt like a cold exercise one moment can envelope you whole the next.

And it’s all packaged up in a glossy, spellbinding series which enthrals more than it distances.

The Sandman is streaming now on Netflix

Melbourne’s most wealthy suburbs identified in tax office data

“They’re pretty expensive and large houses,” she said. “It creates a requirement to have a wealthy owner to purchase and maintain properties like that.”

Fowler said having the airport within a 35-minute drive was also appealing to a cashed-up clientele, particularly people who traveled regularly for work.

Greater Macedon Ranges Shire Jennifer Anderson said while Mount Macedon had a veneer of wealth and was home to some rich people, there were many in the wider community who were also struggling.

“People might come up here and see it’s a beautiful environment with all these large houses and rich people, but you can forget that among that we have a diverse community,” she said.

The latest census data showed Mount Macedon had a median weekly income of $2,647 with median monthly mortgage repayments of $2,604. The median weekly rent was $330.

loading

Anderson said the council offered outreach services to local residents who were struggling.

“Often these people don’t want to say they’re at risk if they’re surrounded by others doing well,” she said.

Stonnington councillor Matthew Koce, whose ward covers Toorak, also insisted his municipality took in an economically diverse community with some residents of public housing living not far from some of Melbourne’s most pricey real estate.

He said the calls he took from Toorak residents echoed the concerns of other areas, which typically included problems with street trees, footpath damage and required upgrades to drainage.

“I find the community to be reasonable across the board,” he said.

Brighton and North Brighton were among the wealthiest postcodes with an annual average income just shy of $140,000. The Red Hill postcode was also on the rich list pushing past $108,000.

Burning body found hanging from tree in Los Angeles’ Griffith Park

A burning body was found hanging from a tree in Los Angeles’ Griffith Park, according to authorities in the city.

Los Angeles Fire Department says that the gross discovery was made near the park’s merry-go-round on Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities say that the victim’s age, gender, and race are not yet known.

Firefighters called to the scene said that the victim was already dead when they arrived, according to NBC Los Angeles.

“It’s a death investigation. We’re assisting with body recovery,” an LAFD spokeswoman told Los Angeles Times.

Los Angeles Police Department has launched an investigation into the death.

Griffith Park is one of the largest urban parks in the United States, covering 4,210 acres of land in the city’s Los Feliz neighborhood.

“Situated in the eastern Santa Monica Mountain range, the Park’s elevations range from 384 to 1,625 feet above sea level,” states the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks.

“With an arid climate, the Park’s plant communities vary from coastal sage scrub, oak and walnut woodlands to riparian vegetation with trees in the Park’s deep canyons.”

It is not the first body found in the park this year.

In April the body of a hiker who went missing two weeks ago was found in the park with his pet dog still sitting loyally by his side.

Oscar Alejandro Hernandez, 29, was found in a remote area of Griffith Park after being reported missing on 16 March. His Golden Retriever from him, King, was emaciated but alive, having faithfully remained with his owner until his body from him was discovered.

A search and rescue team used a helicopter to remove Hernandez’s body from the steep hillside, also near the merry-go-round in the east end of the park.
