Why Cheerios are better than coffee for breakfast, new study claims

When it comes to eating healthily, it seems there’s a new piece of advice every week.

Take eggs. Once demonized for being high in cholesterol, they gained hero status when protein-rich diets became the holy grail for weight loss. No wonder we’re so confused.

But a new study could be the definitive guide that we’ve all been looking for.

Researchers from the US have created the Food Compass, which, they say, is the most comprehensive system ever devised to assess the nutrition content of what we eat. The team in Boston spent three years looking at more than 8,000 foods and drinks, from melon to a McDonald’s, and used cutting-edge science to rank them according to 54 different attributes.

They gave each food a score between 1 and 100 — the higher the score, the healthier the food. Foods scoring between 100 and 70 are encouraged, those between 69 and 31 should be eaten only in moderation, while anything under 30 is bad news.

Researchers from the US have created the Food Compass, which, they say, is the most comprehensive system ever devised to assess the nutrition content of what we eat

Some of the highest scoring foods will come as little surprise. Legumes, nuts and seeds (average score 78.6), fruits (73.9) and vegetables (69.1) all do well. Savory snacks and desserts (average score 16.4) are on the no-go list.

But there are some surprises. Sweet potato crisps get a score of 69, the same as bulgur wheat, usually considered a healthy grain. The vitamins and minerals in both are comparable. But break it down further, and other factors emerge.

Sweet potatoes have more vitamin A and potassium, and are low in sodium.

Bulgur wheat does have more protein and fiber than sweet potatoes, but it also has more starch (a bad thing) and fewer healthy fats.

And those of you who have ditched cereal in favor of eggs for breakfast might be surprised to find that Cheerios (95) and Shredded Wheat (83) are not only top scorers in the grain category, but score more highly than a boiled egg (51 ).

‘Cereals aren’t inherently bad. In fact, if they have a high whole grain content then they will get a good score for that, and if they don’t have added sugar, they won’t lose any points,’ explains Professor Jeffrey Blumberg, one of the co- authors of the study.

Coffee addict? Curiously, an espresso (55) isn't the best choice, according to the Food Compass

What’s more, although eggs are a great source of protein, they may not contain as many nutrients as, say, a cereal that’s been fortified with vitamins and minerals, hence the lower score.

Fancy super-charging your diet? Here’s what to choose—with their Food Compass ratings in brackets.

FOLLOW THE FOOD COMPASS

Highest scoring foods – 100/100

  • avocado
  • Raw or lightly cooked broccoli
  • celery juice
  • raw salmon
  • Watercress
  • red kidney beans
  • cherries

Lowest scoring foods – 1/100

  • fizzy drinks
  • white pitta bread
  • boiled sweets
  • Frankfurters
  • biscuits
  • fudge
  • instant soups

BREAKFAST

For juice, opt for celery (100), which contains a range of vitamins and minerals including potassium, magnesium and calcium, or tomato (100), which is a great source of the antioxidant lycopene.

Coffee addict? Curiously, an espresso (55) isn’t the best choice. The healthier option is a skimmed milk cappuccino (73), which has some protein and, unlike the full-fat version (58), not too many saturated fats.

As for cereals, Special K might seem a good option, but with a score of 18, it’s on a par with Cornflakes (19) and not much better than Frosties (15).

Eggs alone, boiled or poached, score only 51. But make an omelette and you can push that up or down, depending on what you put in it. A ham and cheese omelette cooked in butter drags the score down to 15, but with an egg-white omelette with vegetables, you’ll hit 59. If toast is your thing, ditch jam on white (1) for reduced-fat peanut butter on whole wheat (63).

LUNCH

Unadulterated sashimi (thinly sliced seafood) is a good choice (100), while a sushi-style California roll (1) has almost no health benefits thanks to its starchy rice, sugary vinegar and processed crab sticks.

White rice noodles (17) might look healthy but they’re almost empty calories. But if you go for wholegrain spaghetti (70) you get a lot more fiber, plus iron and potassium. Add a tomato-based sauce, with seafood and vegetables, and you’ll score 78.

Sandwiches aren’t a great choice, regardless of filling. Even a vegetable submarine sandwich with fat-free spread only gets 14, while roast beef gets 11. If you must grab a sarnie, go for grilled chicken on a wholewheat roll with lettuce and tomato (68). Sadly, but predictably, cakes (1) and cookies (4) aren’t advised.

dinner

You won’t be surprised to learn that a McDonald’s cheeseburger (8) isn’t massively nutritious. Ditch the meat and starchy carbs in favor of seafood — it’s high in protein, low in saturated fats, and packed with vitamins and minerals.

Try mussels in a tomato-based sauce (95), or a tuna salad made with light mayo (73). For top marks, go for a seafood salad with lettuce, tomato, carrots and other vegetables. The bad news is you need to hold the dressing to get a perfect 100.

If you can forgo meat, a curry isn’t a bad option. Vegetable curry scores 90, beef curry just 51.

Finally, while an ice cream sundae, with chocolate sauce and whipped cream, scores 10, you can still get a chocolatey fix — chocolate frozen yogurt made with skimmed milk scores a pretty impressive 81.

Chrissie Swan shows off her 90kg weight loss in activewear as she trains for 300km charity walk

Chrissie Swan looks fit and determined as she gets in the steps for her charity walk in Melbourne following her dramatic weight loss during Covid lockdowns.

On Friday, the radio host, 48, donned an all-black STAX activewear set which included tights and a zip up, long-sleeved shirt.

She kept her brown hair loose and flowing in the wind as she lugged along a Coles shopping bag and a backpack with mustard in the side pocket.

The television presenter had a set of earphones plugged in as she walked to raise funds for the Fred Hollows Foundation, browsing some shops and her local Sussan along the way.

It comes after Chrissie lost a significant amount of weight, starting in early 2020 during lockdowns.

The Masked Singer judge, who has lost 90kg since the start of her journey, previously credited her slim-down to daily walks and quitting alcohol.

Chrissie has more recently decided to no longer discuss her weight loss publicly.

‘I think the reason I’m not talking about anything now is because I have done that in the past 20 years,’ she told Stellar magazine in July.

‘I’ve waded into that kind of toxic environment, and it didn’t make me feel good. And it didn’t help me, and it didn’t help anyone else. And it just propagates the interest in a woman’s body, which is irrelevant,’ she added.

Chrissie briefly touched on her weight loss in an interview with The Australian Women’s Weekly earlier this year.

She said the ‘enormous’ lifestyle changes she’d made over the previous 12 months had improved her life in so many ways.

‘I’m not going to talk about the size of my a**e. I’m not going to tell you what I eat in a day. Because I’ve read those stories and they make me feel bad about myself,’ she told the magazine.

Chrissie has continued to smash her fitness goals by setting herself a new target: to walk 300km in one month for the Fred Hollows Foundation.

She announced last week she’ll be ‘pounding the pavement’ every day in August to raise money for the blindness charity.

‘I’m doing it again! It’s August and that means I’ll be walking 300km to restore sight to those with avoidable blindness,’ she wrote on Instagram.

‘It only takes $25 to restore someone’s sight. That’s amazing to me! Will you get behind me? Last year we raised over $80,000 (that’s over 3,200 people who can see again because of you!?) This year I’m aiming for $100,000!’

She concluded: ‘Whatever you can spare – there’s a link in my bio. I’ll keep you updated as I go. Let’s do this!’

Chrissie took part in the challenge this time last year, initially aiming for 150km before later extending her goal to 300km.

According to an Instagram post last year, she clocked more than 310km and told her followers that a company had offered to match her donations for the next $15,000.

Australian mum goes viral on TikTok for 60kg weight loss

An Aussie mum who lost 60kg in a bid to save her life now looks unrecognizable.

After suffering postnatal depression following the birth of her son, Brisbane mum Brooke Hoggan struggled with her weight.

She would turn to food for comfort, while she stopped being as active as she once was – causing her to gain weight rapidly.

After hitting her heaviest weight of 120kg, the eyelash technician decided to see her doctor for help to slim down – but soon discovered that the weight was not her only issue.

“After having my son, I struggled with postnatal depression which caused major weight gain,” Brooke, 29, said.

“I was eating takeaway all the time, and wasn’t very active. I tried lots of different methods to lose weight, but nothing worked.

“I decided to go see a doctor to get help losing weight, but that’s when I found out about more serious issues.

“I had a fatty liver due to my weight. My levels were quadruple what they were meant to be.

“It was a life or death situation. My doctor told me that I’d have to either lose weight straight away, or I would need to go in for a liver transplant.

“It was terrifying.”

Brooke said her GP gave her a grim diagnosis – either she lost weight, or she could die.

Her only option was to either get a gastric sleeve to help jump start her weight loss, or to undergo a risky liver transplant, which could take time she did not have.

Faced with this unimaginable choice, Brooke decided to undergo gastric sleeve surgery in March 2021.

The surgery involves the removal of 80 per cent of the stomach organ and is performed under a general anesthetic using advanced laparoscopic keyhole surgery.

While this helped her initially lose 20kg, after three months Brooke noticed it “stopped working”, and no matter what she did, the weight wouldn’t budge.

Going back to her doctor, she was told this was “very unusual”.

“I couldn’t understand what was happening. Everything had been going well and they bam – no more weight loss” she said.

“I’d seen people who could lose way more than me after having this done, so I couldn’t understand it.”

It turned out she had an underactive thyroid, and the gastric sleeve could only do so much before it stopped working.

Determined not to let herself gain the weight back she had already lost, she sought help from a personal trainer, and followed a strict high-protein meal plan, along with regular PT sessions that included a mix of strength and cardio exercise.

“After the tests revealed I had thyroid issues, I knew it was up to me to put in the extra work to get the weight off.

“I’d already lost 20kg, so I had that motivation. I found an amazing personal trainer who set up an eating and exercise plan.

“In the past year, I have managed to drop another 40kg through a strict diet and exercise program.

“I could never have done it without this change.”

Now, after losing a total of 60kg, Brooke said she feels like she has her “life back”.

When she shared her journey on TikTok, the mum-of-two went viral – racking up nearly two million views on her video.

“My liver is totally back to normal, and I owe it all to weight loss” she said.

“I could have lost my life. I might not have been there for my kids, and that terrifies me.

“Everything I do is for them. I feel like a different person now, and a better mum.

“I’m so much happier, more confident, and I have the drive to go out there and do things.

“At my biggest, I only wore black clothes. Now I’m wearing all types of bright colors.

“I’ve got my life back and kicked old Brooke to the kerb for good.”

“Your offspring is a genius. He’s worth so much money and has created so many things, you can’t take that away from him. Are you proud? Jackie O asked.

“Nope. You know, we are a family that have been doing a lot of things for a long time, it’s not as if we suddenly started doing something,” Errol replied.

Elon Musk’s dad Errol Musk gives savage Kyle and Jackie O interview

Elon Musk’s 76-year-old father has given a stunning interview to Australian radio, taking aim at his tech billionaire son and opening up about his controversial relationship with his 34-year-old stepdaughter.

South Africa-born and based Errol Musk, who has seven children including two with his stepdaughter from a second marriage, Jana, spoke with KIIS FM’s Kyle and Jackie O this morning in a bizarre 20-minute interview, in which he dismissed his son’s success .

Elon is his eldest son with his ex-wife, model Maye Musk, who joined the Tesla CEO at the Met Gala this year. Maye and Errol also share are Kimbal and daughter Tosca.

Errol said his billionaire son feels as though he is running behind schedule in his career achievements. The father agreed with that sentiment.

“He is frustrated with progress and it’s understandable,” he said.

“I know it sounds crazy, but we tend to think like that as a family. He’s 50 now and I still think of him as a little boy. But he’s 50, I mean he’s an old man.

He went on to sledge his son’s body and diet while discussing recent shirtless photos of Elon on a yacht in Greece.

“Elon is very strongly built but he’s been eating badly,” he said, adding that he’s recommended a supplement called garcinia cambogia, which supposedly aids weight loss without additional exercise or dieting, to his son.

Jackie O then asked if the South African engineer drove a Tesla, to which he replied he instead drove a Bentley, Rolls Royce and Mercedes. He then told the hosts it was Elon’s younger brother Kimbal who was his “pride and joy” about him.

Asked about marrying his 34-year-old stepdaughter Jana Bezuidenhout – who he had raised since she was four and now shares two young children with – Errol said the relationship was “completely normal”.

Last month, the 76-year-old revealed he had had a daughter with Ms Bezuidenhout in 2019, a year after they had their first child, Elliot Rush, now aged five. The children do not live with their biological father, with Errol telling The Sun they “get on their nerves” when they visit.

He refused to rule out having even more children, however, saying: “The only thing we are on Earth for is to reproduce.”

According to The SunElon finds his dad’s relationship with Jana “creepy”.

Recently, it emerged Elon welcomed twins last November with a senior executive at one of his companies, 36-year-old Shivon Zilis.

The twins were born just a few weeks before Musk had a second child via surrogate with his on-off girlfriend, Canadian pop star Grimes.

The father-of-nine also has five children with his first wife, Canadian author Justine Musk.
