South Sydney star Latrell Mitchell ready to fire in first NRL finals series since 2019

Latrell Mitchell says September football is “what I live for” as he eyes off four upcoming blockbuster club clashes and playing finals footy in a Rabbitohs jersey for the first time.

Mitchell, who starred in the 38-point walloping of the Warriors on Saturday with a personal haul of 24 points to lift South Sydney to sixth position on the ladder, has not played in a final since winning the 2019 decider with the Roosters.

Since joining the Rabbitohs he missed the 2020 finals series with a ruptured hamstring tendon and last year’s finals due to suspension.

He has a sensational record in football finals, winning six of seven games and two premierships with the Roosters. He throws in five tries, with a try in each of his first five appearances, and it is his time to shine.

The 25-year-old custodian is not satisfied with what he has done. It is what comes next that drives him. Winning a competition with South Sydney is his quest from him, but huge games against the Eels, Panthers, Cowboys and Roosters in the next month could make or break the Rabbitohs

“I just love the pressure of this time of year. I love the competitiveness. It is what I live for. I strive for that,” Mitchell said.

“When you know what semi-finals tastes like, it is where you want to be.

“Let’s focus on getting there first… but it would be a different feeling winning [a title] here at South Sydney. I know the passion of the South Sydney fans, members, sponsors and investors… everyone who has put their blood, sweat and tears into it. It is time to repay that.

“I am definitely putting my hand up to do that because I haven’t played [finals] since 2019 and I am really excited to feel the pressure and see what unfolds.

“The next month, I think it is definitely what we need. It is only going to be a positive for us. It will outline a few things that we need to work on. This week’s done. Next week is Parra’.”

Mitchell said he had learned a lot about getting the best out of himself, while reflecting on his three-year absence from the business end of the season.

“That is a real eye opener, but it is a disappointing thing as well… with injury and suspension. Things happen in a split second,” he said.

“I have taken a lot of things out of the last three years, just with my growth. I’ve learned how to be a better teammate, and a better dad off the field as well. When your off-field is making you happy it translates into your footy, and vice-versa. I am continuing to build my legacy.

“I want to keep working on the little things and put myself in the best position.”

The Rabbitohs have won five of six matches since Mitchell’s return from a nine-week absence due to a hamstring injury suffered in round five. After putting the Warriors to the sword, South Sydney coach Jason Demetriou said Mitchell’s best of him was yet to come in the next month.

The Rabbitohs fullback said the entire side had another gear.

“We still haven’t got our full strength back yet,” Mitchell said. We still have Campbell Graham to come back into the team and a few others. It is exciting. It is a great time of the year to give everyone a taste and see where our depth is at.”

Woolworths worker pays for Melbourne mum’s groceries in kind act

A Woolworths customer has been left “mortified” after a staff member stepped in to help her out during a tough moment.

The Melbourne woman explained she was having technical issues while paying for her groceries during a recent trip to the supermarket.

At the same time, her newborn baby was “kicking off”, prompting a Woolworths worker to step in and pay for the woman’s groceries.

The customer took to Reddit to explain that while she was very “grateful”, she was also “mortified” over the experience – and wanted to see if there was a way she could thank the woman without getting her in trouble.

“I just got back from Woolworths where I tried to pay with my phone on self-checkout,” she said.

“It wasn’t working so they printed me a barcode and took me to the service desk to pay, but my phone payment still didn’t work.

“After trying a few times and my newborn kicking off, the staff member said, ‘Don’t worry it’s on me.’

“I was really taken back and asked if I could transfer her the money.

“She said no and then said, seriously it’s on me. My baby was screaming the place down by this point. I was so grateful and also mortified.”

The encounter left the woman asking questions about the Woolies staff member was allowed to do this or if it was “dodgy”.

“I want to go back and give her something to say thank you, but don’t want to get her in trouble if she’s done something she’s not supposed to have done,” she said.

“Anyone work at Woolworths and can tell me what the deal is?”

People were quick to tell the woman to leave it and not draw attention to the worker’s actions.

“Maybe accept the kindness shown and pay it forward to someone else in need. In that way, you don’t risk getting the staff member in trouble,” one person said.

Another added: “What’s more likely? They risk being sacked or even arrested for a total stranger, or pays a few bucks to help out someone obviously trying their best but struggling.

“My partner works at a supermarket and has paid for people before. It feels good. Pay it forward.”

A third, who works at a different supermarket, said: “I’ve paid the difference for a few people that have come up short a couple of times and as far as I’m aware that is completely fine, even seen my boss do Item.

“Don’t know why it would be any different at Woolies. Sounds like excellent customer service to me.”

Another added: “I work at Woolworths, the company only cares if the products are paid for. She likely paid out of her own pocket for you, I’ve done it before.”

NRL star Bryce Cartwright subject of restraining order to protect anti-vaxxer ex-wife Shanelle

NRL star Bryce Cartwright is hit with restraining order on behalf of his anti-vaxxer ex-wife – after the couple split up

  • Bryce Cartwright and his ex-wife Shanelle split in early 2021 after difficult 2020
  • NRL star and his ex-partner are anti-vaxxers, stating it is their personal choice
  • Cartwright refused mandatory influenza vaccination during 2020 NRL season
  • Walked away from $450,000 contract on Gold Coast to link up with Parramatta
  • Police have now taken out an AVO against the footballer on behalf of his ex-wife
  • Do you know more? Email [email protected]

NRL star Bryce Cartwright will front a Sydney court this week after police took out a restraining order to protect his anti-vaxxer ex-wife.

Cartwright split from his former wife Shanelle early last year, just months after walking away from a $450,000-a-season contract with the Gold Coast Titans.

The 27-year-old forward returned to New South Wales in September 2020 with Shanelle, the mother of his two children, citing personal reasons. He now plays for the Parramatta Eels.

Police have sought an apprehended violence order against Cartwright on behalf of Shanelle and the footballer is due to appear in Waverley Local Court on Thursday.

An interim order states that Cartwright must not assault, threaten, stalk, harass or intimidate his former partner as well as other standard conditions he does not damage her property or harm any animal she owns.

Cartwright is not facing any criminal charges.

An incident which led to the AVO being sought was described by sources as a ‘domestic dispute’ which was in no physical way, according to The Daily Telegraph.

The former couple’s beliefs about vaccinations, expressed mostly on social media, were widely condemned by medical experts in 2020.

At the time of their split, Cartwright’s agent Allan Gainey of Pinnacle Sports Management said the split was a ‘personal matter’.

‘Look, the kid is in a good spot at the moment and I want to keep him in that spot,’ Gainey said in January last year. ‘He does n’t need any publicity surrounding his personal life.’

Concerns for Cartwright’s mental state began after he and Shanelle were sent a number of threats on social media due to their controversial stance on vaccinations.

Some of the threats involved harming the couple’s young children.

‘At some point it does take a toll,’ Cartwright said at the time. ‘I speak to a counselor every now and then just to clear my mind.

‘I have little things I like to do, like meditation… it clears my head and can be as simple as just going for a swim, staying off my phone or taking the kids to the beach.’

Cartwright, a standout Penrith junior before making his first grade debut in 2014, was granted permission to continue playing in the NRL in May 2020 despite refusing a mandatory influenza vaccination.

That vaccination was part of the NRL’s return-to-play regulations at the height of the Covid pandemic.

The Titans submitted an application for a medical exemption which was granted by Queensland’s chief medical officer Jeannette Young.

Cartwright and his wife sparked then controversy when they publicly declared they would not vaccinate their young children.

The couple called themselves ‘pro-choice’ rather than ‘anti-vax’.

Once touted as a NSW State of Origin prospect following a strong start to his career with the Panthers, Cartwright made the move to the Titans to work under ex-coach Garth Brennan in 2018.

He played just three games for Gold Coast in 2020 before linking with Parramatta, where he made 19 appearances last year.

Cartwright has turned out for the Eels seven times this year, including coming off the bench in a 36-20 win over Manly on Friday night.

Sydney Pork Rolls cop heat for charging its patrons 20 cents just to CUT a roll in half

Cost of living gone crazy? Café cops heat for charging its patrons 20 cents just to CUT a roll in half – but they have a simple explanation

  • Vietnamese restaurant Sydney Pork Rolls has a list of extra surcharges
  • One of them is 20 cents for the restaurant staff to cut your banh mi in half
  • The café told FEMAIL that due to staff shortages they needed to charge extra
  • They separate the halved rolls into different paper bags

An Australian sandwich shop has copped criticism for charging a 20 cent surcharge just to cut their famous banh mi rolls in half.

A photo posted to Reddit showed Vietnamese restaurant Sydney Pork Rolls’ list of surcharges if customers want to add extra salad, chilli, meat, ham, egg, pate and mayo.

A banh mi is traditionally a short baguette with thin, crisp crust and savory ingredients inside, including pickled carrot and cucumber.

Purchasing one banh mi from the store in Haymarket, Sydney, ranges in price from $5.50 and $8.50. Extra salad will set you back 50 cents, while extra meat, ham and egg is $1.50 on top of the regular price.

Even an extra bag will cost you 10 cents, although it’s not clear why you’d need to purchase an extra one.

WHAT IS A BANH MI?

A banh mi is traditionally a short baguette with thin, crisp crust and savory ingredients inside, including pickled carrot and cucumber.

At the bottom of the list is a surcharge titled ‘request roll cut in half’ which totals 20 cents and it has baffled frequent customers with its vagueness.

‘Which way to cut in half?’ one Reddit user commented. ‘Long ways? Sideways? Across ways? So many questions here.’

’50 cents to ask why it costs 20 cents to cut,’ said another.

‘With a two-second cut… that equals $360p/hr. I’m getting into the sandwich biz,’ one comment read.

‘They should ask “would you like to cut it in half?” like a fast food worker upselling (by) asking if “you want fries with that”,’ said another.

The sandwich bar told FEMAIL that the purpose of charging the extra 20 cents was because it does take them time to cut the sandwiches just right.

'They should ask "would you like to cut it in half?" like a fast food worker upselling (by) asking if "you want fries with that",' said another

‘They should ask “would you like to cut it in half?” like a fast food worker upselling (by) asking if “you want fries with that”,’ said another

‘Due to a shortage of staff it does take some time for us to cut it in half so it costs more for us in service time,’ a spokesperson said.

‘When we cut it in half we will wrap them separately so the filling doesn’t come out so this requires extra time and an extra paper bag.’

Others on Reddit agreed with the extra cost and said the restaurant was well within their rights to charge.

‘Getting it cut in half means the two halves are wrapped and packaged separately. It’s completely reasonable to charge extra,’ one user posted.

Qantas moves managers and executives into baggage handling

Qantas senior executives and managers will step down from their usual roles to pitch in as ground handlers, as the airline continues to suffer from major staff shortages.

The shake-up is part of an extraordinary contingency program expected to last three months and help the airline get back on its feet before the busy summer holiday period.

While the airline has rehired close to 2000 staff after letting about 1700 ground handlers go during the pandemic, it has struggled to stay on top of baggage, flight delays and cancellations.

Chief operating officer Colin Hughes told staff that during the contingency program, they would be an “embedded resource within the ground handling partners”, Australianreports.

“This means you’ll receive a roster, be scheduled to operate and be supervised and managed in the live operations by our ground-handling partners.”

Staff participating in the program would be required to sort through and scan bags, and drive airport tugs to carry luggage onto planes and between terminals.

“It’s our singular company focus to support our teams to get our operation back to where it should be and provide our passengers the experience they expect from the airline,” Mr Hughes said in his note to staff.

A Qantas spokesperson said the measures were introduced as a result of staff shortages caused by flu and Covid, as well as the tight labor market.

“We’ve been clear that our operational performance has not been meeting our customers’ expectations or the standards that we expect of ourselves – and that we’ve been pulling out all stops to improve our performance,” they told news.com.au .

“As we have done in the past during busy periods, around 200 head office staff have helped at airports during peak travel periods since Easter.

“While we manage the impacts of a record flu season and ongoing Covid cases coupled with the tightest labor market in decades, we’re continuing that contingency planning across our airport operations for the next three months.”

Qantas is filing an appeal in the High Court after the Federal Court found it was in breach of the Fair Work Act for sacking almost 2000 staff during the pandemic.

It has yet to fully staff its operations since domestic and international travel summarized following the Covid shutdown period.

Qantas’ reputation has suffered immensely in recent months with furious customers complaining about delayed and canceled flights, missing luggage and extreme customer service wait times.

At the time, I told The Herald Sun: ‘We are really excited. He is a beautiful, healthy baby, very calm like his mother, he is sleeping well and eating well.’

‘Jess couldn’t be better. We are looking forward to a great year.’

Wayne added that he has high hopes one of his children might follow in his sporting footsteps, adding: ‘I’d be lying if I said I wouldn’t want him to play the game his father loved playing and being a part of so much .’

Wayne was first linked to Jessica at the Australian Open in January 2018, making their romance on Facebook official months later.

Wayne detailed his 2002 affair with Kelli Stevens, the wife of his then-teammate Anthony Stevens.

His revelation left Ant, 41, shocked, as Wayne said: ‘It’s haunted me for over 20 years. I was in self-destruction mode. You know, I guess my life started to unravel.’

The sports star was married to Sally McMahon at the time, and Anthony had even acted as a groomsman at their wedding just a year earlier.

Wayne later issued a public apology to his former best friend in 2016, insisting the affair had been a one-night only event.

Following the highly publicized affair, he left his football club and struck up a relationship with model Kate Neilson, who he later proposed to, and things turned from bad to worse.

He was arrested and charged by Miami police during a holiday with Kate after she alleged that Wayne had smashed a wine glass on her face during dinner, cutting her mouth and neck.

‘In America, I’ve been charged with assaulting police. I got accused of glassing my girlfriend,’ he told Ant.

‘I went over to throw wine on her in a restaurant, which is clearly wrong. The glass touched her lip, the headlines were that I glassed her.’

Seemingly not convinced by Wayne’s version of events, a cynical Ant asked him: ‘What the f**k are you playing at? What went through your head?’

Wayne said that the incident was ‘one of the biggest regrets of my life’, but insisted the glass had only ‘touched her lip’.

‘[It] didn’t break. I wasn’t trying to glass her,’ he said.

Ant then asked Wayne if he was ‘an aggressive person’.

‘All my partners will say I’ve never been physically abusive, but have I been mentally abusive and also, I guess, intimidating? Absolutely,’ Wayne said.

Added Ant: ‘You have this f**king attitude, “I’m the world’s greatest footballer, I do what the f**k I want.”‘

But Wayne said Ant’s assessment of him wasn’t true, and his bad behavior was ‘due to a number of reasons’.

‘Actually being physically violent to someone, I saw that everyday growing up… Horrific stuff,’ he said.

‘And that’s why when people close to me said, “That is unacceptable,” I’d say, “What do you mean? I raised my voice, I stood up. You know, I put my arm on her.”‘

He added: ‘I now know how warped my thinking was. You don’t actually have to hit someone to be abusive.’

Michael Lichaa: NRL faces fresh calls to scrap no-fault stand-down rule

Rugby league’s no-fault stand-down rule has come under fire once again, with a lawyer for Michael Lichaa calling for it to be scrapped after it was revealed the ex-Bulldog was blocked from playing park football last year.

Mr Lichaa, 29, was forced to withdraw from the game he loves amid an 18-month legal battle to clear his name that culminated when a magistrate last week acquired him of domestic violence offences.

The former Lebanon international’s world was turned upside down in February last year when he was charged with a string of offenses after a late-night incident at his Connells Point home.

But it can now be revealed that Mr Lichaa was blocked from playing park footy after being charged when the NSWRL refused to register his contract.

The NRL in 2019 introduced its no-fault stand-down rule under which any player facing serious criminal charges, which carry a jail term of 11 years or more, is automatically sidelined.

The NSWRL adopted similar guidelines.

“The NSWRL did not register a contract for Michael Lichaa last season for bringing the game into disrepute after he was charged with several serious offences, including common assault and intimidation,” a NSWRL spokesman said.

“The NSWRL reviewed the situation this season and registered a contract for Lichaa.”

Mr Lichaa’s 113-game NRL career came to an end in 2019 when Canterbury did not offer him a contract for the following year.

He did not pick up a contract with a rival club and signed on to play for Cronulla Caringbah in the Sydney Shield in an effort to keep fit and in the hope of attracting a suitor.

However, his career was put on hold while he fought the charges after the NSWRL refused to register a contract.

Mr Lichaa was eventually found not guilty on Friday. His former partner of him declined to testify against him.

Mr Lichaa was acquitted of charges of common assault and intimidation, though he pleaded guilty to one charge of destruction of property after he punched a glass door.

The Sutherland Local Court was told last week that he had since retired from rugby league and was now working as a project manager.

Sam Saadat represented the former Cronulla and Canterbury hooker throughout the horror 18-month ordeal.

He said he understood the intent behind the no-fault rule but argued it hadn’t had the effect it was supposed to.

In the summer of 2018-19, the NRL was hit by a string of scandals – 17 incidents and allegations between September and mid-February – that prompted then ARLC chairman Peter Beattie to draft the rule.

But Mr Saadat, who is also heavily involved in rugby league and has coached at the Bulldogs and Sydney Roosters in the women’s and developmental ranks, said the rules needed a rethink.

“I understand where the NSWRL and NRL are coming from, but I think it needs to be revisited. If you look at the examples… almost every single one was acquitted,” he said.

“And as a result, if you look at the impact it’s had on their careers and mental health, I think the prejudice far outweighs the policy’s purpose.

“The game has a right to administer itself how it wants and the Federal Court found that when (Jack) de Belin challenged it. But I think they need to revisit that decision. We now have examples of where it hasn’t worked.”

Tristan Sailor, Dylan Walker and Tui Kamikamica were all stood down after being charged by police before either being found not guilty or having the charges dismissed.

De Belin did not play for the entirety of the 2019 and 2020 NRL seasons before he was allowed to return midway through last year when the Director of Public Prosecutions elected not to pursue a third sexual assault trial.

Two juries could not arrive at a verdict, though he and co-accused Callan Sinclair were found not guilty of one count following their second trial.

Manase Fainu is facing trial in the Parramatta District Court where he has pleaded not guilty to wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and denied stabbing a church youth leader in the back.

Penrith’s Tyrone May was the only player stood down under the policy to be convicted.

May narrowly escaped jail after he pleaded guilty to four counts of intentionally recording an intimate image without consent.

Mr Saadat called for the NRL to hold a conference between players, administrators and lawyers to look at the policy.

“The game is supposed to be a reflection of society,” he said.

“Legally, everyone is entitled to the presumption of innocence.

“In this case even if it’s worded as a no-fault policy, it’s somewhat prejudicial. In people’s minds it creates an impression they must be guilty. I think it’s fundamentally unfair.”

Kangaroos squad, Mal Meninga, World Cup teams, Nation eligibility, Joseph Suaalii, Roosters young gun, news, highlights

Kangaroos coach Mal Meninga has dropped his biggest selection hint yet, revealing Roosters young gun Joseph Suaalii is a “genuine selection option”.

Meninga has a big job on his hands ahead of this year’s World Cup, with a number of players opting to represent their nation of heritage as opposed to the Kangaroos.

Maroons gun Josh Papalii will reportedly ply his trade for Samoa, joining Jarome Luai and Brian To’o, while Felise Kaufusi, Siosifa Talakai, Daniel Tupou and Kotoni Staggs are set to represent Tonga.

But in a huge boost, the Kangaroos are set to pick the Tricolours 19-year-old flyer in the Australian squad — should he chose to represent his country of birth.

Suaalii is currently in his first full season of first grade and was included in Brad Fittler’s Blues squad, scoring 13 NRL tries to date.

“I’m a fan of Joseph, absolutely, and he is right in the picture, particularly if the Roosters keep their run going to the finals,” Meninga said to the SMH.

“He is a genuine selection option, definitely. He’s just a talent. He has always been a talent. I like his courage from him.

“I remember ‘Izzy’ (Israel Folau) came in at a young age, so did ‘GI’ (Greg Inglis), so if you’re talking about age, there are no questions about Joseph handling the international stage.”

Meninga also referenced reports suggesting Australia’s rival code were in pursuit of the young gun, revealing it is “hardly a shock” the Wallabies could make a play.

“I read the reports that the Wallabies are looking at him, which is hardly a shock. They wouldn’t be doing their job if they weren’t looking at league players like him and wanting him to convert,” Meninga said.

With Cotric is unlikely to feature, and Addo-Carr being tipped for selection on the edge, Suaalii could find himself in the green and gold.

Suaalii made his intentions clear earlier in the week, making it clear he wants to compete in the end-of-year showcase.

“I honestly haven’t thought about it too much but I want to be there playing at the World Cup,” Suaalii said.

“I’m trying to make that Australian team and if I’m lucky enough I’ll make that Samoan team as well.

“If I get picked for either of them it would be an honour. If I’m playing at the World Cup I’ll be happy.”

Rita Ora’s fiance sparks rumors they’ve secretly married as he wears ‘wedding ring’ in new snap

Rita Ora’s fiance Taika Waititi has sparked rumors they couple have married after the filmmaker was seen wearing what appeared to be a wedding band.

Taika, 46, was seen wearing a piece of jewelery on his left finger while lapping up the rays and having a drink, in a picture snapped by Rita’s sister Elena, The Sun reports.

Ora started dating the Thor: Ragnarök Director Taika 18 months ago.

She opted to share the photo too, but decided to cover Waititi’s ring finger with a caption that read: “Perfect day for a bev @avaline Thank you @camerondiaz.”

Taika could be seen sporting a white patterned shirt and white sunglasses as he lapped up the sun and poured a glass of wine.

The ring snap follows reports that Ora and Waititi are preparing a low-key ceremony before a glitzy celebration later in the summer.

a pal awning The Sun that: “This isn’t about them doing a big showy thing and crowding about it beforehand. It’s just about them being in love and deciding the time is right to formalize their relationship.

“They couldn’t be happier.”

The pair moved back to the UK and into a very impressive London mansion.

Ora has spent much of the past two years in Los Angeles and Australia and wore a black sports top and overcoat in snaps as she lugged bottles of water, while New Zealander Waititi was in a denim jacket, baseball cap and shades.

They later held hands while strolling to a pub near the North London property Ora bought for £8 million (A$11.5 million) last year.

An onlooker said: “It’s unusual to see Rita in the neighborhood these days – she bought the house but left the country almost immediately afterwards and has barely spent any time there.

“But they were shopping for things and loading bits in and it’s obvious this is going to be where they call home, at least for a while.

“They’re a very jetsetting couple, and have homes all over the place, but it felt as though this was quite a permanent move watching their behaviour.”
