Why young men support Andrew Tate’s ideologies

According to Sydney student Ben Smith, Andrew Tate is exactly the role model his generation needs.

The 19-year-old started following the self-proclaimed “self-help guru” – whose violent and misogynistic videos have amassed more than 11.6 billion views on TikTok – for his takes on relationships and success.

“He just says it like it is. It’s like, he doesn’t worry about what people think about him,” Smith told The Oz.

“He just says what he wants to say.”

Comments under news.com.au’s own coverage of the former big brother contestant and kickboxer’s rise to infamy have echoed a similar sentiment.

“Tate is KING!!! He’s exposing the corrupt, the matrix styled control system and pathetic elite ruling class,” declared one, while another called for “Andrew Tate for PM”.

“Pushing back against all the crazy feminists,” said a third.

“Love him or hate him, he is making bank on leftist outrage. For that he deserves a salute. Not that I would want my son watching or emulating him.”

It seems incomprehensible that the views espoused by Tate – that rape victims “must bear some responsibility” for their attacks; or that women should be choked by their male partners and stopped from going out – could be perceived as anything but vile.

Yet men around the world – especially young ones in western nations – are not just resonating with the content creator, but making TikTok accounts using Tate’s picture and name to further perpetuate his message.

“It’s in the interests of men to return [Tate’s] views, because they serve the status quo power, and reinforces the idea that women are there to serve men,” FullStop Australia CEO Hayley Foster told The Oz.

“Perpetuating these views results in them having more access to power and using women for their own purposes.”

Teachers from an all-boys secondary school shared with New Zealand’s Shit You Should Care About podcast last week that Tate “is becoming an almost poisonous addiction” of their students.

“The majority of our students, especially the juniors, are OBSESSED with him and the outlandish views he portrays,” they wrote.

“What’s more terrifying is they actually see him as a role model. They’re starting to genuinely believe being successful is synonymous with abusing women.”

The school’s 13- to 15-year-old students “are doing speeches at the moment and they all want to do speeches on how inspiring he is”, the teachers added.

While in the playground, and around the classroom, they’d overheard boys parroting Tate’s points of view – that “women who are sexually assaulted are ‘asking for it’ due to ‘what they wear’”, that “some women ‘dress like hookers’”, and that “if a woman has had abortions already she loses the right to use the statement ‘her body her choice’”.

“[We] just wanted to fill you all in on the genuine terror that your young female teachers are most likely facing at the moment. Especially if a school refuses to acknowledge it as a community issue,” they said.

“We know we cannot control what our boys watch but we do want to educate them on moral decisions and viewpoints due to the poignant age they are at.”

Off the back of a segment about Tate on The Project on Sunday night, radio host and former reality TV star Abbie Chatfield said she’d “absolutely” seen evidence of the British-American’s influence in her own experiences online of late.

“I’m getting DMs from what appear to be early-teen boys saying, ‘I hope Andrew Tate destroys you’, or things along that line,” the 27-year-old said.

“I also get comments calling me ‘Abbie Tate’, and comments on TikTok especially. That’s where it’s really, really rife.”

Fellow co-host Rachel Corbett called out the social media platform for failing to remove Tate’s “dangerous” content.

“When kids look at Instagram and TikTok, and the idea of ​​11.6 billion views as a success, that then says, ‘Well those views must be good, because they look at how famous he is. So I want to emulate that.’ It’s just really dangerous,” she said.

As National Director of White Ribbon Australia, Allan Ball, explained to news.com.au, “the use of gaming, extreme bravado and music [in the videos of Tate] overlays his deplorable actions with a filter of normalcy”.

“Impressionable young minds are drawn in by money, power and unwavering confidence, to become part of a tribe,” he said.

Behavioral scientist Juliette Tobias-Webb agreed, telling The Oz that figures like Tate attract younger audiences specifically because they’re prone to risky behaviour, and are less likely to understand the consequences of their actions.

“It’s a stage when you haven’t had serious relationships or you probably haven’t been held accountable for really poor behaviour,” Dr Tobias-Webb said.

“They haven’t developed the empathy skills and that inhibition to sort of curb some of these urges.”

Mr Ball said that “we need to reframe Tate’s commentary and ask the hard questions to better understand what young men believe are the benefits and drawbacks of having these beliefs”.

“We need to be sharing messages of equality, respect and the ways we can work together to stop violence – hate and abuse don’t have a monopoly on what constitutes viral content,” he added.

“If Tate’s body of hateful, demeaning and misogynistic musings are not sufficient for TikTok to act, then we must work together as a community to provide young men with an alternate lens of respect, compassion and equality.”

Matt To’omua spills on divorce from Ellyse Perry, engaged to Naomi Cameron

Former Wallabies fly-half Matt To’omua has opened up about his “brutal” divorce from Australian cricketer Ellyse Perry, admitting the taxing order was “not fun at all”.

The sporting power couple, who tied the knot in 2015, announced their divorce in July 2020, confirming the news in a joint statement.

“It’s with the greatest of respect for one another that we decided to separate earlier this year,” the pair said at the time.

“We felt this was the right course of action and is in the best interests of each other and our current lives. This is something that has evolved and is a mutual decision.

Throughout our relationship we have remained private and we ask that our space and privacy continue to be respected during this difficult time for both of us.”

The couple went public in 2013 when they appeared at the John Eales Medal awards night together before getting engaged the following year.

To’omua has since started dating forensic psychologist Naomi Cameron, who he met in 2020. They recently got engaged.
Earlier this year, the 32-year-old announced he would head overseas and join Japan’s League One, signing with an unnamed club.

To’omua represented the Wallabies in 59 Tests after making his international debut in 2013, also playing 130 Super Rugby games for the ACT Brumbies and Melbourne Rebels.

Meanwhile, rumors emerged last year that Perry was dating Fremantle Dockers captain Nat Fyfe.

Throuples: US couple reveal how their bridesmaid became their girlfriend

A US couple have opened up about how their best friend – and bridesmaid at their wedding – became their girlfriend.

Tyler, 29, met 26-year-old Angel on a dating app in 2018 and quickly fell in love.

But after becoming engaged three years later, the pair from Memphis, Tennessee asked Angel’s college friend Sam to move in with them, forming a “throuple”.

The 23-year-old was right by their sides when Tyler and Angel tied the knot in May, performing the dual role as bridesmaid and girlfriend of the bride and groom.

Now the trio have detailed the struggles of being in a three person relationship – revealing how they navigate their sex life and the shock reaction from one disapproving family member.

At the beginning of their relationship, Angel said she experienced “jealousy” but explained they have worked through it now.
“We were scared to open up to each other, it’s intimidating to add a whole other person into your life that you can depend upon,” she told truly.

“I was being selfish but have worked through my jealousy. Now they go on dates, we go on dates, and all three of us go on dates.”

Their sex life works similarly, with Angel, Tyler and Sam all sharing one bed, but rarely being intimate as a trio.

Instead, two of them take the bedroom while the other “watches TV, cooks or cleans”.

But while adjusting to life as a threesome ran pretty smoothly, their relationship hasn’t been accepted by everyone.

A week before Tyler and Angel’s wedding, Tyler’s cousin found out about his polyamorous relationship and refused to attend – despite the fact he was set to be a groomsman.

However, Sam and Angel’s family found out through the throuple’s TikTok channel, and were very accepting.

Their social media platforms have however made them the target of online abuse, with the throuple admitting “backlash is a daily thing”.

But the trio – who realized they shared a connection after enjoying a “one night thing” at a festival – say they are stronger than ever.

In a recent video, they revealed they have “finally found the courage to show PDA in public as a throuple”.

And Tyler says he has plans to propose to Sam down the track too.

How David Jones is targeting 582m Chinese customers via WeChat

Upmarket legacy retailer David Jones is arguably better known for its old-fashioned shops and traditional customer service than its online innovation.

But the department store appears to be one of the only Australian retailers tapping into the gigantic Chinese market on a social media platform that boasts 582 million active users a month.

The retailer’s chief marketing officer James Holloman has described the platform Weibo or WeChat as “world leading” combining the elements from other social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram and WhatsApp, as well as the ability to pay bills and buy everything from fashion to beauty products .

With more than 40,000 followers and three years on WeChat, Mr Holloman said David Jones’ Chinese clients were “incredibly important” to the retailer, which has signaled unrivaled “commercial success” on the social media platform.

“WeChat is a full ecosystem for mainland China … and it’s almost a one-stop shop for mainland Chinese where they are doing kinda like Facebook, Instagram and a payment wallet all in one,” he told news.com.au.

“You technically follow different accounts and different individuals, and you use it essentially as a WhatsApp version between your friends in terms of messaging, but then you also follow different brands and it’s similar to a really immersive email.

“It’s basically a full immersive ability to shop directly from incredibly immersive posts … and you can follow everyone from Louis Vuitton, Coca Cola, Estee Lauder to Dior.”

For David Jones, many of his followers are part of the Chinese community living in Australia and the bulk are aged between 25 and 36, Mr Holloman revealed, which has given the retailer “massive growth” from younger shoppers.

One of the department store’s big moves has been around Singles Day, an unofficial holiday and shopping event held on 11 November every year in China, that celebrates people who are not in relationships.

“Last year during the Singles Day shopping event, which is almost the biggest shopping day worldwide and it’s bigger than Black Friday, we did our first live stream,” Mr Holloman said.

“It’s the equivalent of shopping television where we had an hour and a half of fully engaged viewers watching our life stream of all of amazing products and key specials happening over that day and we had 13,000 viewers watching that on WeChat.”

For the Lunar Year in February, they introduced the little red packets which are a traditional gift of money, and allowed people to send them virtually to friends from their account.

Influencers have also been key to the brand’s success, I added.

Mr Holloman said mainland Chinese are important clients for buying premium goods, with a report from consulting firm McKinsey revealing that 50 per cent of the global luxury goods will be purchased by the Chinese by 2025.

“It’s a very hot market for the stuff that we sell,” he added.

“Secondly, there is an audience in Australia that want to be communicated to. There are 1.2 million Chinese born Australians so that’s a huge proportion as it’s almost 5 per cent of the Australian population.

“We want to talk to our clients in the language and way they best feel most comfortable in… and understanding and engaging in and on a platform that they feel most comfortable in.”

This approach has also been translated into stores as well with sales associates who speak fluent Mandarin, he added.

WeChat recently praised David Jones’ SS20 Beauty campaign as a part of a global showcase of best-in-class activity and it was the only international retail store featured on the list.

The beauty campaign, themed Full Bloom, included video, imagery, emails, in-store visual merchandising, a 36-page print booklet and shoppable article pages.

“With clever use of shoppable product display functions and rich graphic design elements, the campaign achieved a click through rate of more than double that of industry benchmarks,” WeChat said.

Another “incredible success story” for the China market has been landing Kim Kardashian’s popular Skims line, Mr Holloman said.

“She can be polarizing, but it’s been a commercial success and from what we hear from customers, they are excited to have such exclusive brands across our network,” he said.

The retailer copped fierce backlash when it announced it was stocking the star’s products, with loyal fans of the store accusing the world-famous influencer of diminishing the retailer’s “class” after DJ’s shared a video to their Instagram page of Kim promoting the brand.

However, despite its investment in WeChat, David Jones has no presence on another social media platform that has been blowing up – TikTok – which has over one billion users.

“We are incredibly strong on Instagram and on Facebook, we have in excess of 400,000 followers on Instagram and 600,000 on Facebook,” Mr Holloman said.

Queensland University of Technology retail expert Dr Gary Mortimer said David Jones’ use of WeChat is a “great strategy”.

“They are taking advantage of a growing middle class affluent Chinese market that does often look for Australian brands and often international brands and David Jones has the ability to provide those brands to that particular audience,” Dr Mortimer told news.com.au.

“When you look at what they are doing in that space they would be aligning themselves with Chinese influencers that connect really well with that Chinese market.

“They would be leveraging really large online promotional events like Singles Day that runs on the 11 November every year and it gets bigger and bigger.

“Singles Day is a bit like Amazon Price day but it turned over about $US85 billion ($A122 billion) last year. The Chinese market is a very valuable and viable market for Australian business and brands.”

Dr Mortimer said China’s population of 1.3 billion compared to the “tiny” 26 million living in Australia also showed it was a lucrative field to play in.

“Trust is huge issue for the Chinese population who are concerned about counterfeiting, so working on a Chinese platform gives legitimacy for David Jones in that market,” he added.

“Woolworths is playing in that space as well.”

In 2015, Woolworths opened its first overseas flagship store on the Tmall website and has also partnered with supermarket 7 Fresh since 2020 offering WeChat as a payment system.

Elon Musk has begged his father to “please keep quiet” after he gave an interview about their relationship to the Kyle and Jackie O show on Kiss FM.

Errol Musk, 76, told the Australian radio station he was not proud of his billionaire son when quizzed on the matter live on air earlier in the week.

But the retired electrical engineer later said he misspoke at the time because he hadn’t heard the question properly.

Speaking to the Daily Mail Australia, Errol said his three daughters were so upset with the comments he made on Kyle and Jackie O they refused to speak to him for days.

“Elon knows it’s not true, so he would never get upset about it. He just laughs this kind of stuff off,” Errol said.

“But the last message Elon sent to me was: ‘Dad, the press play you like a fiddle so please keep quiet’.”

It comes after Elon accused Twitter of fraud, alleging the social media platform misled him about key aspects of his business before he agreed to a $44 billion buyout, as their court battle heats up.

The Tesla boss lodged the claim late Thursday as he fights back against Twitter’s lawsuit seeking to force him to close the deal, which he has tried to cancel.

Elon argued in the filing to a Delaware court that the number of users who can be shown advertising on the platform is far below the firm’s figures.

“Twitter’s disclosures have slowly unraveled, with Twitter frantically closing the gates on information in a desperate bid to prevent the Musk Parties from uncovering its fraud,” the claim alleged.

In its own filing, Twitter rejected the mercurial billionaire’s argument, calling it “as implausible and contrary to fact as it sounds.” “According to Musk, he – the billionaire founder of multiple companies, advised by Wall Street bankers and lawyers – was hoodwinked by Twitter into signing a $44 billion merger agreement,” Twitter said.

Elon last week filed his countersuit, which was finally made public on Thursday, along with a legal defense against Twitter’s claim that the billionaire is contractually bound to complete the takeover deal.

‘Distortion, misrepresentation’

“The counterclaims are a made-for-litigation tale that is contradicted by the evidence and common sense,” Twitter argued in the filing.

Twitter, whose stock price closed at $41.06 on Thursday, has stuck by its estimates that less than five per cent of the activity on the platform is due to software “bots” rather than people.

Twitter told the court that Elon’s claim that the false account figure tops 10 per cent is “untenable.” The company also disputed Elon’s assertion that he has the right to walk away from the deal if Twitter’s bot count is found to be wrong, since he didn’t ask anything about bots when he made the buyout offer.

Twitter accuses Elon of contriving a story to escape a merger agreement that he no longer found attractive.

“Twitter has complied in every respect with the merger agreement,” the company said in the filing made to Chancery Court in the state of Delaware.
