Tyson Fury retires, Fury vs Anthony Joshua, Oleksander Usyk, Derek Chisora, news,

WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury said he is retiring from boxing on his 34th birthday on Friday, having previously performed a number of U-turns over his future in the sport.

“Massive thanks to everyone who had an input in my career over the years & after long hard conversations I’ve finally decided to walk away & on my 34th birthday I say Bon voyage,” Fury posted on Twitter.

The announcement has been greeted with skepticism as Fury has previously stated his intention to withdraw only to return to the ring.

He was expected to fight the winner of Oleksandr Usyk’s rematch with Anthony Joshua on August 20 for the chance to unify the world heavyweight titles.

As recently as Tuesday, Fury suggested his most recent spell in retirement was over in order to set up a trilogy fight against Derek Chisora and even claimed to have appointed a new trainer in Isaac Lowe.

However, he has now announced the intention to retire undefeated with a record of 32 wins and one draw from 33 bouts.

Fury went onto thank his wife, promoter Frank Warren and a series of other training partners and television companies who have bought rights to his fights over the years.

The Brit stated ahead of his win over Dillian Whyte in March that he would retire after that fight as he has “150 million in the bank and nothing to prove.”

However, earlier this week, Warren had cast doubt on the suggestion Fury will not fight again.

“I think what’s going to happen is, see what happens on 20 (August) and the outcome of that, and that’ll determine what he intends to do in the future,’ Warren told talk SPORT.

“I think he will (return), because he’s a fighting man and he misses it. That’s what he does, he wants to fight.”

Tyson Fury comes out of retirement, Anthony Joshua, Derek Chisora, heavyweight blockbuster, announcement

WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury has announced that he’s coming out of his brief retirement from boxing to chase a unique piece of history.

Fury, 33, indicated in April that he was ready to walk away from the sport after his successful title defense against the heavy-hitting Dillian Whyte.

The Gypsy King was adamant that his fighting days were over after the fight with Whyte at Wembley, saying that “no amount of money” could change his mind, although many remained skeptical he had retired for good.

Less than four months later, one of the biggest names in world sport will return to the boxing ring after calling out Derek Chisora (33-12-0, 23 KOs) for a trilogy bout.

After a highly entertaining series of bouts against American Deontay Wilder, Fury (32-0-1, 23 KOs) said that he wants to become the first heavyweight to ever fight two different opponents three times.

“I’ve decided to come back to boxing because I can be the first heavyweight champion in history to have two trilogies, one with Deontay Wilder and a second one with Derek Chisora,” Fury said on video shared on his social media pages.

“I always said I’d fight Derek Chisora at the end of my career and here we are, breaking all records again and setting precedents.”

Chisora ended a three-fight losing run against Bulgarian Kubrat Pulev (29-3-0, 14 KOs) last month by split decision.

The Zimbabwe-born fighter had lost to Ukrainian Oleksandr Usyk in 2020, before two consecutive losses to New Zealander Joseph Parker.

Fury also revealed that he has a new trainer, with boxer Isaac Lowe having taken the reigns ahead of the potentially “massive” fight with Chisora.

Lowe replaces the 33-year-olds previous trainer SuperHill Steward, who played a crucial role in Fury’s two wins over Wilder.

“Why I’ve chosen Isaac Lowe as my trainer is because when I was with Peter, Isaac with there. When I was with Ben (Davison), Isaac’s always been there,” Fury added.

“When I with SugarHill, Isaac’s always been there, he’s always given me information, he knows me better than anyone on the planet and we’re a good team.

“We’ve always been together and we’re going to finish this out together. We’ve always worked very well together and here we are, about to take on a massive, massive, massive event.”

Famous boxing promoter Eddie Hearn doesn’t believe that Fury is the biggest name in boxing anymore, with Anthony Joshua set to fight Usyk for his belts on August 21.

Fury became the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world when the then 27-year-old ended Wladimir Klitschko’s control over the division.

But with the world at his feet, the Englishman then fell into a deep depression and had planned to take his own life as he drove his Ferrari 190mph towards a bridge.

Gallen’s BIG plan: Two bouts, one night | 00:38

After putting on weight, getting bigger than 180 kilograms, Fury worked his way back to the ring and quickly became one of the biggest names in world sport once again.

While his showmanship both in and out of the ring has won him many fans, Hearn told GQ earlier this month that Joshua was still the biggest name in the sport.

With Fury having ended his retirement, the door remains open for a potential blockbuster against Joshua – which could be the biggest bout that the sport has seen since Fury’s date with destiny against Klitschko.

Justin Hodges has lit a fuse ahead of his fight against Paul Gallen, declaring he’d knock the Blues legend out “easy” and provided a brutal reminder of who won more Origin series.

And just as there was bad blood as footy players in the feisty Origin clashes, it seems that no love has been lost since all three talked the talk at the press conference.

Gal made a wild bet that if Hodges put $10,000 on the line and knocked the Sharks great out, Hodges would receive $50,000.

“Put your money where your mouth is, put your balls on the line,” Gallen said.

“Have $10,000 on it. I’ll give you five-to-one.

“You’re not man enough… Shake my hand on $10,000. Shake my hand on the $10,000 bet.”

Hodges hit back with a cutting reply.

“I beat you in every series at Origin,” Hodges said.

“I’ll knock you out easy.”

The Broncos legend was also blunt as to how the fight would end.

“I’m going to knock him out,” Hodges said.

“That’s what I’m training for.

“I’ve been working my guts off the last couple of fights preparing myself to what I need to go to.

“I know at some stage he likes to walk forward and that’s going to suit me to a tee, I’m going to catch him.

“I’ll see you in a couple of weeks.”

Ben Hannant was the first man to fan the flames when the former NRL star described Gal as someone who’s more “like a Queenslander” than the proud New South Welshman that he is.

“The most hated New South Welshman in history would have to be Paul Gallen,” Hannant said.

“The reason why is because what he brings. He’s actually like a Queenslander, to be honest.”

Gallen smoked: “Please don’t disrespect me like that. Come on.”

Hannant explained his claim further.

“He puts in effort, he keeps showing up, he never gives up,” Hannant said.

“Against everyone that he goes up against, he thinks he can beat.”

Mike Tyson lost pet tiger when he tried to eat neighbor’s dog, boxing news

Mike Tyson lost his famous pet tiger after the white Bengal tried to eat his neighbours’ dog.

The boxing legend was convinced into buying the wild cat after coming out of prison in 1995 following a three-year stretch.

Tyson is believed to have had three tigers in all, costing him over $US80,000 each at the time.

But, according to his former boxing manager Shelly Finkel, he was forced to give them up after one fateful walk.

Finkel, who SunSport spoke with in New York, recalled: “His house was between two houses in Vegas.

“And on the right side, facing the street was a famous Vegas performer. And on the left side was a businessman who had some dogs.

“Mike decided to walk one of his Bengal tigers, he’s walking the tiger, and the tiger saw the dog and scales the wall to go and eat the dog.

“The man is looking out his window and sees a tiger coming over the wall to try and eat his dog and Mike is pulling him down.

“He gets him off the fence and that night Mike calls me and says, ‘Shelly, the ASPCA is here, I’m not allowed to keep cats in captivity, how do you think they found out?’

“I said, ‘How do you think they found out? Your neighbor sees him coming over the wall to eat his dog. How do you think they found out.’

“That to me was my favorite story with Mike.”

Finkel managed Tyson right up until his retirement in 2005.

But their history dates back to when Iron Mike was a teenage amateur sensation.

And they first worked together in 1988 when Finkel brokered a closed-circuit pay-per-view deal for Tyson’s win over Michael Spinks.

But following the heavyweight’s infamous 1997 disqualification for biting Evander Holyfield’s ear, Finkel became his full-time manager.

He said: “It was one of the greatest trips of my life. The adventures with Mike Tyson were phenomenal.”

Finkel was in touch with Tyson as recently as two years ago, when the boxing icon made a shock comeback.

Tyson, now 56, drew over eight exhibition rounds with Roy Jones, 53, and talk of a trilogy with Holyfield emerged.

But following Holyfield’s painful beating against former UFC champion Vitor Belfort, 45, the plug was rightfully pulled.

Boxing 2022 news: Paul Gallen to fight twice in one night, Justin Hodges, Queensland

Paul Gallen is set to end his boxing career in the most spectacular way possible; by fighting twice in one night.

Foxsports.com.au understands negotiations are nearing completion for the unique boxing extravaganza, with Gallen to feature in two fights on a star-studded card being planned for a date in September. And in another twist, the NSW Blues legend will attempt the feat deep in enemy territory in Queensland.

Gallen is already regarded as one of Australia’s toughest athletes but the prospect of trying to defeat two opponents on the same night — something rarely seen in professional boxing — will put that reputation to the ultimate test.

One of Gallen’s opponents will likely be a fellow former NRL star Justin Hodges, who recently won two fights in the space of three weeks by defeating Ben Hannant (via UD) and Jordan Simi (via UD).

Gallen’s second opponent is yet to be decided but foxsports.com.au understands the shortlist includes several former footy stars. Hannant, Sam Thaiday, Russell Packer and Chris Walker are among those to have been sounded out.

With several of the prospective opponents hailing from Queensland, Gallen has the chance to realize a dream he teased recently.

Speaking to foxsports.com.au ahead of Hodges’ fight against Hannant in June, Gallen claimed the opportunity of “getting to bash two Queenslanders in one night would be fun.”

Hodges and Gallen have engaged in a war of words after the pair made a bet that whichever state won this year’s Origin series would host a fight between the two.

Despite the Maroons great being willing to give up hometown advantage such is his desperation to fight Gallen, he is set to get to fight in front of a hometown crowd for just the second time in his boxing career.

The time frame between fights is one element yet to be confirmed. Gallen could either take on one opponent earlier on the card and return to the ring for the main event, or fight back-to-back fights in a grievous test of endurance.

Gallen has suggested on numerous occasions he will hang up the gloves at the end of the year, if not before.

But in a career already featuring wins over UFC legend Mark Hunt and Aussie former world heavyweight champion Lucas Browne, the chance to win two fights in the same night would be the perfect way to bow out of the sport for good.
