NYC carriage horse on the mend after scary collapse: stable worker

The sick carriage horse that collapsed on a busy Manhattan street won’t be sold off or euthanized as a result, a stable employee insisted to The Post on Thursday.

The horse, named Ryder, spent the night at the West Side Livery stables on West 38th Street after he was filmed lying in the middle of the street in Hell’s Kitchen as his driver repeatedly struck him and ordered him to “get up.”

Christina Hansen, a carriage driver who works at the stable, told The Post it was “highly unlikely” the 14-year-old horse would be put down or sold off following Wednesday’s caught-on-camera order.

“He’s not going to be sold,” the top hat-wearing Hansen said, adding that she’d spoken to the horse’s owner earlier Thursday.

Ryder was examined by a veterinarian after being brought back to the stable by the NYPD’s mounted unit following his collapse — and the diagnosis was Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis, a neurological disease caused by possum droppings, Hansen said.

Hansen said it was unlikely the horse would be put back to work immediately because he’ll need treatment for EPM.

Ryder collapsed in Midtown Manhattan on Aug. 10, 2022.

“It would be irresponsible,” Hansen, who is also a union shop steward, said of having him lug a carriage right away.

“We have all the time in the world. We’ll do what’s right by the horse. He’s going to be treated and we’ll figure out one of the best places for him to retire to,” she added.

The stable worker said Ryder, who has only been in the Big Apple since April after being used as an Amish buggy horse, was already doing “really well.”

“He’s been great. He’s been plowing through there. He’s been eating his carrots,” Hansen said.

Her insistence that Ryder won’t be cast aside came after the president of NYCLASS — an anti-horse carriage group — claimed the horse was at risk of being sold for slaughter following his collapse.

“If the owner simply sells Ryder, he is at serious risk of ending up being sold for slaughter or in some other terrible situation,” Edita Birnkrant said in a statement.

Birnkrant said the organization had already offered to “place Ryder in a sanctuary where he would receive lifelong love and care and proper veterinary care.”

Meanwhile, animal activists — including NYCLASS — descended on City Hall on Thursday to call on the City Council to fast track legislation that’ll phase out horse carriages in the Big Apple. That bill was introduced by Councilman Bob Holden last month.

If passed, the new measure would give horse drivers preferences for electric carriage licensure and require they be paid union wages.

“The collapse of Ryder in peak rush hour traffic in Midtown Manhattan is tragic, unforgivable … and entirely preventable,” said Dr. Jim Keen, director of Veterinary Sciences for Animal Wellness Action and the Center for a Humane Economy.

“Whether he collapsed from overwork and heat exhaustion, or, even worse, overwork, heat exhaustion and untreated EPM, there is no excuse to treat a horse like an expendable machine. There is a simple solution: prohibit carriage horses from dense urban areas, and replace them with electric carriages as Councilman Bob Holden proposed.”

Ashley Byrne, PETA’s director of outreach and communication, said the legislation, if passed, would “be a win for everyone.”

“It would be a win for the workers. Their jobs would be preserved and would be much better and have benefits. It would also protect the public from accidents and run away horse incidents, that we have seen far too many of. And obviously a win for the horses,” she said.

Mayor Eric Adams didn’t answer questions about the horse collapse Thursday.

One protester, Lisa Forsee, 60, took direct aim at Hizzoner over his silence.

“I am ashamed of him. He is running this city. He is allowing animal abuse. It’s documented. He needs to do something about it,” she said.

NYC smash-and-grab nets over $2 million in jewelry: NYPD

A classic smash-and-grab heist in the Bronx netted a clutch of thieves more $2.15 million in “high-end diamond jewelry” during a wild, caught-on-video robbery on Friday, police said.

The foursome scurried into Rocco’s Jewelry on Webster Ave. in Fordham after they were buzzed in by a manager, cops said.

Surveillance video shows a suspect, clad in a white T-shirt and a black cap and wearing sunglasses, acting like a customer when he’s buzzed in around 2:30 pm Instead of going inside, the man let in the robbery crew, video shows.

It was reported to police that on Friday, August 5, 2022 at approximately 1438 hours, at Rocco's Jewelry located at 2521 Webster Avenue, an unknown individual approached the front door and was buzzed inside of the store by an employee. This individual then held the door open for an additional three individuals. Once inside the store, the three individuals used a hammer to smash open the display cases and removed a large amount of high-end diamond jewelry. The jewelry was placed into bags being carried by the individuals, who fled the location on a foot heading southbound on Webster Avenue. The total value of stolen property is approximately $2.15 million. No injuries were reported.
The caper lasted about 30 seconds, the security footage shows.

NYPD cops shoot 3 males who opened fire on Queens house party with 75 to 100

NYPD cops who were monitoring a Queens house party Friday night shot three males after the group rolled up and opened fire on the 75 to 100 partygoers, according to police.

The violence erupted about 11:35 pm Friday night at Springfield Boulevard and 130th Avenue in Laurelton and sent the three alleged shooters to the hospital with injuries, NYPD’s Chief of Patrol Jeff Maddrey said.

The plain-clothes officers in unmarked vehicles were watching the party because they feared there was a “potential for violence by some of the local street crews,” police said.

The melee began when plain-clothes officers spotted a group of men showing up to the party, threatening revelers with guns and open fire.

As a number of party attendees shot back, the cops drew their weapons and fired at the gunmen, according to sources.

80% of NYC gun suspects get released from custody following arrest: Eric Adams

More than 80% of pistol-packing perps were put back on the streets after getting busted for gun possession in New York City this year, Mayor Eric Adams said Wednesday.

“When it comes to guns, this year, 2,386 people were arrested with a gun. Of those, approximately 1,921 are out on the street,” Adams said during a news conference on bail reform and recidivism.

“Arrested with a gun, out on the street.”

Adams added: “Gun arrests in custody: 19.5%. Out of custody: over 80%.”

“How do you take a gun law seriously when the overwhelming numbers are back on the streets after carrying a gun?” I have asked.

Adams also highlighted the number of gun suspects who’ve been re-arrested — and re-released.

“This year, 165 people were arrested with a second gun charge,” he said.

“Of those, 82 — out on the street. Not one arrest but two gun arrests — back out on the street,” he smoked.

This is the highest percentage in years.
Major Eric Adams questioned how anyone could take a gun law seriously if they are released from custody so quickly.

Adams didn’t specify how many defendants were released without bail or how many posted bail to get sprung.

All gun-possession charges are eligible for bail under New York law, which requires judges to impose the least restrictive conditions necessary to ensure defendants return to court.

In 2019, the year before the state’s controversial bail reform law took effect, “we arrested 80 people for a gun crime who had an open gun arrest,” Adams said.

Robert Miller

In 2021, he said, “the number was 259” — more than three times as many.

Adams also said that in 2019, 20 people arrested in shootings already had pending gun-possession charges but that last year, the number spiked nearly fourfold, to 77.

Also during Wednesday’s news conference at One Police Plaza, NYPD Chief of Crime Control Strategies Michael Lipetri said, “We like to talk about credible messengers when we work with our social service providers … to deliver the message to the crew member about stop the violence. ”

But Lipetri said that “the credible messenger today in New York City is the crew member that was arrested with a gun yesterday, that’s out today, that’s telling that crew, ‘Well, look at me, I can carry a gun in New York City .’”

Lipetri said the NYPD was investigating 716 suspected of committing 30% of the roughly 2,400 shootings that have taken place since 2021.

“Of those individuals, 54% — almost 385 — today have an open felony,” he said.

Man tries to rape woman as she walked her small dog in NYC

A fiend tried to rape a woman as she walked her small dog on a Brooklyn sidewalk Saturday morning, cops say.

Video footage released by the NYPD shows the attacker approaching his 30-year-old victim from behind around 8:30 am near Woodbine Street and Ridgewood Place in Bushwick and place her in a chokehold.

He then wrestles her to the sidewalk behind a parked car.

The woman’s dog can be seen frantically barking as the man gets on top of the woman, footage shows.

Police said the perp continued to strangle the victim and assault her over her clothing before he fled east on Woodbine Street.

“This scumbag literally placed her in a chokehold and pushed her to the ground and almost choked her unconscious,” a police source told The Post on Sunday.

The victim originally turned down medical attention but was later treated at Interfaith Medical Center, police said.

She sustained a cut to her neck and bruising and swelling to both eyes, a police source said.
