$9 for milk and $84 for instant coffee: The Aussies hit hardest by soaring grocery costs

Milk costing more than $9 and a tin of instant coffee for an astounding $84. These are real prices – and they show just how dire things are for some Aussie shoppers.

Consumers all across the country are being hit by the cost-of-living crisis, which has sent the price of everyday goods such as lettuce and milk soaring.

But shocking photos shared to social media show how grocery bills cost more in some places – and expose just how dire the situation has become.

Watch the latest News on Channel 7 or stream for free on 7plus >>

One photo of an April receipt from a store in the town of Kaltukatjara, southwest of Alice Springs, showed a two liter carton of milk costing $9.20.

At a Sydney Woolworths, the same product was being sold for just $3.10 this week.

Milk was spotted at a high price in one remote community. Credit: Facebook

Donna Donzow, an operations manager for the non-profit EON Foundation which helps grow and supply fresh produce to communities in Western Australia and the Northern Territory, said she noticed the unusually high grocery prices in June when she was in Minyerri, a town 240km southeast of Katherine.

“The cost of a mixed salad pack was $17,” Donzow told 7NEWS.com.au.

By comparison, a mixed bag of salad at a Sydney Woolworths this week cost just $3.

The high grocery prices in remote areas are due to a range of issues including long supply chains, poor quality roads and freight costs – and experts say more needs to be done to sort out the problem.

A long-time problem

Food has cost more in the regions than in our biggest cities for years – as photos on social media show.

One photo shared in 2020 showed a tin of instant coffee selling at a Hope Vale grocery store, in remote Queensland, for $84, according to the poster.

According to a 2021 report by healthcare policy organization Aboriginal Medical Services Alliance Northern Territory (Amsant), food in supermarkets is 56 per cent more expensive in remote communities than in regional supermarkets.

A 2020 inquiry by federal MP Julian Leeser echoed these findings, stating that “the cost of purchasing food is considerably higher for remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities than for people living in larger population centers in urban and regional Australia”.

A tin of instant coffee was being sold at a Hopevale Island and Cape grocery store, in remote Queensland for $84. Credit: Facebook

The Australian Bureau of Statistics says the cost of groceries has increased by 5.9 per cent across all of Australia’s capital cities since June last year – and there’s reason to believe costs are also going up in rural Australia, where prices were already astronomically high.

In Minyerri, for instance, Donzow said she saw signs around the shop advising community members of that fruit and vegetable costs had gone up due to flooding in Australia’s southern states.

EON Foundation executive chair Caroline de Mori said she’d had a similar experience.

“I heard people complaining the other day about a lettuce for sale in Sydney for $8, but can you imagine what it’s like when you go a few thousand kilometers inland?” de Mori said.

“You end up paying $12 for one brown-headed broccoli.”

‘It’s only getting worse’

The enormous costs aren’t just an issue for getting food on the table now – they have flow-on effects for the future.

De Mori told 7NEWS.com.au that the lack of cheap fruit and vegetables meant some shoppers were turning to processed food.

“By the time it all gets (to remote communities) it’s moldy and not fresh, so it’s not necessarily an option,” she said.

“This means we see astronomically higher disease rates and health issues in these communities, and it’s only getting worse.”

The foundation helps set up community gardens to encourage locals to grow their own fruit and veg. Credit: EON Foundation

De Mori added some communities only have one store selling essentials for the whole town.

“Because they’ve got the monopoly, they can charge whatever they like and it just seems to be a terrible downwards spiral,” she said.

University of Queensland public health policy professor Amanda Lee told 7NEWS.com.au while experts recommended numerous solutions over the years, little has been done overall.

Lee recommends subsidizing freight costs and preventing supermarkets from marking up fruit and vegetables.

“Unfortunately, while there’s a long list of recommendations from all the inquiries over the past 40 years … there’s been very little collective action to address it.”

As celebrities shamed for ‘excessive’ use of private jets, which eco-spouter is the BIGGEST poser?

Quaffing champagne at 40,000ft, flying from glitzy party to awards dos and back again in time for bed — it’s a hard life being an A-lister with your own luxury jet. But the high life has come under fire this week, as celebrities are being named and shamed for their excessive use of private plans.

A private jet emits as much carbon dioxide in an hour as the average person does in a year

A private jet emits as much carbon dioxide in an hour as the average person does in a year

A single private jet emits as much carbon dioxide in an hour as the average person does in an entire year, with private flights 14 times more polluting (per passenger) than a commercial plane.

Yet their super-rich owners — many of whom boast about their apparent eco credentials — are hopping on and off their jets for trips that last less than 15 minutes.

Using data compiled by an international flight tracker, British marketing agency Yard compiled a list of the worst offenders.

So whose plane is the worst polluter? And who’s the biggest climate hypocrite among the high fliers?

Kylie Jenner

Kylie Jenner, 24, shared a picture on Instagram showing two private plans — her own and one belonging to her rapper boyfriend, Travis Scott — with the smug caption: 'You wanna take mine or yours?'

THE-JET: Kim Kardashian’s younger sister Kylie has been labeled a ‘climate criminal’ for repeated shorthaul trips on her £60million jet.

Last month, the billionaire social media star, 24, shared a picture on Instagram showing two private plans — her own and one belonging to her rapper boyfriend, Travis Scott — with the smug caption: ‘You wanna take mine or yours?’

She bought the all-white 59.6ft-long Bombardier Global 7500 on a reported spending spree in 2020. The exterior features her name and a Barbie-pink strip, while the interiors have white seats, pink satin pillows and eye masks (bearing ‘Kylie Skin’, the name of her make-up range) and colored lights that can be set to different hues depending on the time of day.

There are Hermes blankets for guests, two bathrooms, a master suite and an on-board wardrobe.

FLIGHTS TAKEN: 64 this year.

SHORTEST FLIGHT: 12 minutes (Van Nuys to Camarillo, both in California).

CO2 EMITTED: 1,682.7 tons — 240 times the average person.

ECO BOASTS: Kylie prides herself on buying eco-friendly products for her daughter Stormi, four, and made her make-up range vegan last year, telling followers she was going ‘vegan and clean’ because it was ‘time to elevate’ for the planet.

Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift, 32, used to own two jets but sold the smaller one (worth a mere £4.9 million) in early 2020.

THE-JET: The 32-year-old singer — worth an estimated £470 million — bought her private plane, a £33million Dassault-Breguet Mystere Falcon 900, in 2011.

With its plush cream interiors and in-built flatscreen TVs, it features 18 fully reclining seats and a distinctive number 13 on the side (her lucky number and birth date in December).

She used to own two jets but sold the smaller one (worth a mere £4.9 million) in early 2020.

FLIGHTS TAKEN: 170 this year

SHORTEST FLIGHT: 36 minutes (Missouri to Nashville, Tennessee).

CO2 EMITTED: 8,293.54 tons — 1,185 times the average person’s annual carbon emissions of seven tons.

ECO BOASTS: In 2020, Taylor was branded a ‘sustainable fashion influencer’ by Vogue.

In another interview that same year, she branded climate change a ‘horrific situation’.

A representative defended her apparent air miles, saying that her jet is ‘loaned out regularly to other individuals’. They added: ‘To attribute most or all of these trips to her de ella is blatantly incorrect.’

Oprah Winfrey

Oprah Winfrey (pictured with her husband Stedman Graham) bought a £62million Gulfstream G650 in 2016

THE-JET: With an estimated net worth of more than £2 billion, it’s no wonder TV host Oprah has her own posh plane. The 68-year-old bought a £62million Gulfstream G650 in 2016, reportedly after becoming irritated when a female fan asked her for a hug while she was waiting in an airport queue.

The opulent jet, which can comfortably fit 16, is divided into four themed areas: dine, work, entertain and relax. There’s a double bed, a conference room and a dining area as well as an on-board chef.

The aircraft, nicknamed the limousine of the jet world, is decked out with a Jacuzzi and top-of-the-range cinema room, as well as elegant soft furnishings.

The actor often flies his private plans himself, having qualified for his pilot’s license in 1994.

He also sends them on free gifting missions around the world. Last Christmas, he reportedly flew 300 cakes by private jet from his favorite bakery in California to London for the cast and crew of the Mission: Impossible film franchise — a round trip of 5,500 miles.

SHORTEST FLIGHT: 12 minutes (Shannon to Killarney, Ireland).

CO2 EMITTED: 149.6 tons — 21.4 times the average person.

DeSantis-you DA Andrew Warren insists he’s still working despite suspension

The Florida state attorney suspended by Gov. Ron DeSantis insisted Friday that he still has a job — but the Republican governor’s office said he ca n’t even get into his old office.

Andrew Warren, who served as Hillsborough County’s top prosecutor until DeSantis announced his Thursday, insisted to CBS that he was still on the job.

“He does not have the authority to suspend me,” he told the network, adding that “the people elected me to serve in this position and I am going to continue doing it to keep our neighborhoods safe.”

Warren asserted that the move was “unconstitutional” and that he refused to recognize its legitimacy.

Those comments drew a Twitter rebuke from DeSantis spokesperson Christina Pushaw Friday, who said Warren was being “delusional.”

“Andrew Warren tells the media that he is still the State Attorney because he identifies as a State Attorney,” she wrote. “Sorry but that doesn’t fly here. In Florida we live in the real world. His badge from him wo n’t even work to access his former office from him today. ”

DeSantis said he removed Warren because he wasn’t prosecuting serious crimes and had pledged to ignore current or future restrictions on abortion or gender-reassignment surgeries on minors.

“We are not going to allow the pathogen that’s been around the country of ignoring the law, we are not going to allow that to get a foothold here in the state of Florida,” the governor said Thursday. “We are going to make sure our laws are enforced and no individual prosecutor puts himself above the law.”

Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister backed the suspension, asserting that local law enforcement had grown frustrated with what they viewed as Warren’s prosecutorial leniency.

Warren has ripped his removal, arguing that his office has not handled any cases related to abortion or gender-reassignment surgeries and that he was being punished for hypothetical misconduct.

DC cop shot dead during training session, ex-lieutenant charged

A retired Washington DC police lieutenant has been arrested on a manslaughter charge after he shot and killed a library cop during a baton training exercise on Thursday, police said.

Jesse Porter, 58, was wrapping up a training session in a conference room at the Anacostia Neighborhood Library just after 3:30 pm. when he fired a shot that struck 25-year-old Maurica Manyan, the DC Metropolitan Police Department said.

The public library special police officer, from lndian Head, Maryland, was rushed to an area hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

An investigation revealed that Porter, who retired as a Metro PD lieutenant in 2020 and was working as a private contractor, was providing instruction on the use of retractable batons to library officers when he allegedly fired the shot that killed Manyan.

A firearm was recovered on scene, police said.

There were about six people in the conference room at the time, including other library police officers, but no one else was hurt.

Porter was arrested on an involuntary manslaughter charge.

The city’s public library system has its own force of full-time special police officers who can be armed and are responsible for ensuring the safety and security of the library branches.

Porter was arrested on an involuntary manslaughter charge after police consulted with the US attorney’s office in Washington. He remained in custody on Friday.

At a news conference shortly after the shooting, DC Metro Police Chief Robert Contee said it was unclear why Porter was armed with a gun during the training exercise.

Generally, law enforcement agencies take stride to ensure trainers and participants do not have access to live ammunition or actual firearms during training programs, to avoid the possibility of accidental gunfire.

“It’s not good practice,” Contee said. “I’m not sure in this situation why the trainer had a live weapon in the training environment. But it is not a good practice to do this.”

The training took place at the Anacostia Library in DC.

Police did not say why Porter fired his weapon, but unnamed sources told NBC4 that the retired cop allegedly drew his gun to show how quickly it could be done and discharged the live round that hit Manyan in the chest.

Milwaukee to host 2024 GOP convention after Nashville pulls out

Beer, Brats, and Elephants.

The Republican National Committee has officially tapped Milwaukee to host the party’s 2024 national convention, where state and territory delegates will officially select the GOP’s next nominees for president and vice president.

“Milwaukee is a world-class city, and we are eager to see it shine in the spotlight come 2024,” RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel said. “I look forward to working with the members of the Republican National Committee, Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson, the Milwaukee Host Committee, and Visit Milwaukee to deliver an incredible convention for our Party and nominate the next President of the United States.”

Milwaukee was the last candidate city standing after Nashville’s city council rejected a draft agreement to host the event on Tuesday. However, the RNC’s site committee had already recommended last month that Milwaukee be the pick.

The choice marks a return to the Midwest for the GOP’s quadrennial extravaganza. The Republican Party has held 14 presidential nominating conventions in Chicago since its first election in 1856. Since the last Chicago Republican Convention in 1960, the party has picked Kansas City (1976), Detroit (1980) Saint Paul, Minn. (2008) and Cleveland (2016) as notable convention sites.

Milwaukee was due to host the 2020 Democratic National Convention, but the COVID-19 pandemic intervened and forced all events to be held virtually. The city used its preparations for that convention to argue to Republicans that it had a “turnkey” operation ready to host for real in 2024.

“Milwaukee welcomes the 2024 Republican National Convention. My city is ready to show the world what a great destination we are for conventions and tourism,” Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson said. “We look forward to the positive economic impact of the Presidential nomination convention, and, as the host city, I am confident all the attendees will find Milwaukee to be a splendid location for the event.”

Like most big cities, Milwaukee leans heavily Democratic. In the 2020 presidential election, Milwaukee County residents backed President Biden over Donald Trump by 40 percentage points, helping the Democrat to a narrow win in the Badger State after Trump pulled off an upset in 2016.

The winner in Wisconsin has been elected president the past four elections.

“My stance, and I think that most Democrats understand this, is that this is not a political decision, it is a business decision,” Johnson told CNN. “It will present an opportunity for us to have millions of dollars of economic impact … for us to fill our restaurants, our bars, our hotels, and to support our hospitality industry that’s been battered by COVID, of course, over the last couple of years.”

The Democratic Party has yet to announce where it will be holding its 2024 convention, but Atlanta, Chicago, Houston and New York have all submitted bids.

Commonwealth Games 2022 – Australia’s team of matchwinners will take some stopping

Take an inch against Australia and they’ll still win by a mile. That’s the realization other teams have come to in recent years as the depth of talent enjoyed by the reigning ODI and T20I world champions has come to bite them again and again.

In the opening match of the Women’s Ashes in January, England started brightly with an 82-run opening stand to reach 169 for 4 from their 20-over allocation. Then Alyssa Healy fell for just 7 and Australia were 26 for 1, only for Tahlia McGrath to smash an unbeaten 91 in a 144-run stand with Meg Lanning and Australia won by nine wickets. England didn’t win another match in that series, despite challenging in the drawn Test.

Against India in their opening match of the Commonwealth Games, Australia slid to 49 for 5 chasing 155 before Ashleigh Gardner and Grace Harris launched a successful rescue mission with a 51-run partnership for the sixth wicket. And when McGrath and Beth Mooney dug Australia out of trouble at 19 for 2 in their final group match to beat Pakistan by 44 runs, a key to their success was rammed home yet again – if one or two players fail, someone else inevitably steps up .

“We were in a bit of a sticky situation early,” McGrath said after the Pakistan game. “Then Moons and I both probably struggled a bit early and had to work through that. Then that sort of allowed us to have that freedom at the end and get us to what was a really good total.”

McGrath has been a revelation in T20Is, going unbeaten in four of her six innings in the format, although she said her approach wasn’t so much about valuing her wicket.

“In T20 cricket I sort of just go out there with no fear, a bit of freedom,” she said. “I get to play my shots and I know that the batters I’ve got coming in before me are world-class, that allows me to play with that freedom.

“I’ve just been lucky that I’ve had a few not-outs because it doesn’t happen very often in T20. So I’ll just ride it for as long as I can do it.”

Her partnership with Mooney has also been key, in this instance yielding 141 runs for the third wicket.

“We’re both very chill,” McGrath said. “I remember there was a game in the Gold Coast where we got caught in traffic and it was Moons and I in the car and we literally rocked up two minutes before the start of warm-up. The security guard said to us he was glad it was us two because everyone would be freaking out.

“We’ve batted a fair bit together now. I really enjoy with Moons and we both recognize when each other is struggling.”

Mooney agreed: “She’s awesome to work with. I think we’ve got a pretty good understanding of each other and each other’s games. We’re both pretty level-headed people.

“She just comes out and plays to her strengths straight away and takes some pressure off the person at the other end, so she’s a very impressive player and hopefully she can continue that form for a while yet.”

Their union against Pakistan was all the most important after Healy, the hero of Australia’s ODI World Cup triumph in April, fell for four runs, as did Lanning, the captain. In six innings since her knock of 170 in the World Cup final against England, Healy has not passed 23. But Mooney wasn’t concerned.

“She’s looking really good in the nets,” Mooney said of Healy. “Ella She’s just been a little bit unlucky. We also know that when we get into semis and finals, that she steps up and is one of the best players in the world.

“So there’s no doubt in our changeroom that she’s going to show up and do that again for us. We’re really behind her and we know that she’s got the capacity to do some serious damage against the opposition, so I’m sure she ‘ll be fine.”

With Australia having set such a high standard for themselves, Mooney warned against seeing them as “robots” in light of “a couple of low scores”.

With the ball, Australia are also in a good place. McGrath took 3 for 13 against both Pakistan and Barbados, while spinners Alana King and Jess Jonassen have been in fine form.

New Zealand are well aware of the task they face in Saturday’s second semi-final of the Commonwealth Games, scheduled to start at Edgbaston at 6pm local time, which will be 3am on Sunday in Sydney and 5am in Auckland.

Having managed just 71 for 9 in their final group game – a seven-wicket loss to England, who will play India in the other semi-final earlier on Saturday – Sophie Devine, the New Zealand captain, was keen to put their latest result behind them .

“We were well below par and it wasn’t through lack of effort or lack of planning or anything like that, I think you just get days like that,” Devine said. “It’s never nice to be a part of but we’ve got to flush it down the dunny pretty quickly and move on to something that’s actually really exciting for us, playing in a semi-final against Australia at a Commonwealth Games.”

And Devine embraced underdog status against a side New Zealand, like everyone else, knows are capable of great things.

“I think a lot of the pressure is going to be on Australia,” she said. “They’ve certainly come into this competition as favorites and hopeful of taking that gold medal whereas a lot of people didn’t think we’d maybe make the semi-finals.

“We can really take that on board and just play with a bit of freedom and take it to the Aussies. We obviously know them really well, so I think our plans are going to be pretty spot on and likewise they know us really well too It’s always just a great battle against the Australians.”
