‘Lucky to be alive’: Actress Anne Heche survives horrific car crash that left her “engulfed in flames”

US actress Anne Heche is in hospital following an accident in which her car smashed into a house and flames erupted.

“Anne is currently in stable condition,” Heather Duffy Boylston, Heche’s friend and podcast partner, said in a statement on Saturday.

“Her family and friends ask for your thoughts and prayers and to respect her privacy during this difficult time.”

Another source close to Heche told CNN “she’s lucky to be alive” and has severe burns.

The source said Heche should expect a long recovery ahead.

Heche’s car rammed into a garage, before speeding off and driving into a house in Los Angeles’ Westside shortly before 11AM on Friday, police said.

The car came to a stop inside the two-storey house and erupted in flames.

The fire took nearly 60 firefighters more than an hour to douse, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Footage showed a blue Mini Cooper Clubman, badly damaged and burned, being towed out of the home, with Heche sitting up on a stretcher and struggling as she was put in an ambulance.

She was originally in a ‘critical condition’, but friends have now said the actress is stable.

Police are still investigating the incident, however so far no other injuries have been reported, and no arrests have been made.

According to CNN, authorities are yet to question Heche about the circumstances of the incident due to the significant nature of her injuries.

She first came to prominence on the soap opera Another World from 1987 to 1991, in which she won a Daytime Emmy Award for the role.

In the late 1990s she became one of the hottest stars in Hollywood, a constant on magazine covers and in big-budget films.

She co-starred with Johnny Depp in 1997’s Donnie Brasco; with Tommy Lee Jones in 1997’s Volcano; with Harrison Ford in 1998’s Six Days, Seven Nights; with Vince Vaughn and Joaquin Phoenix in 1998’s Return To Paradise, and with an ensemble cast in the original 1997 I Know What You Did Last Summer.

Her relationship with Ellen DeGeneres from 1997 to 2000 heightened her fame and brought immense public scrutiny.

In the autumn of 2000 soon after the two broke up, Heche was hospitalized after knocking on the door of a stranger in a rural area in California.

Authorities said she had appeared shaken and disoriented, and spoke incoherently to the residents.

In a memoir released the following year, Call Me Crazy, Heche talked about her lifelong struggles with mental health and a childhood of abuse.

She was married to camera operator Coleman Laffoon from 2001 to 2009, with whom she had a son.

He has another son with actor James Tupper, her co-star on the TV series Men In Trees.

Heche has worked consistently in smaller films, on Broadway, and on TV shows in the past two decades.

She recently had recurring roles on the network series Chicago PD and All Rise, and in 2020 was a contestant on Dancing With The Stars.

Senate Dems skipping COVID testing to push spending bill vote: report

That’s sick!

Senate Democrats are embracing a “Don’t Test, Don’t Tell” policy this weekend as they try to ram a $764 billion spending bill through the 50-50 chamber — knowing that even one COVID-19 positive could blow up their plans.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has set a Saturday test vote for the so-called Inflation Reduction Act, which needs all 50 Democrats on board so Vice President Kamala Harris can cast a tiebreaking vote in its favor.

“They’re not going to delay it if a member has gotten COVID,” a senior Senate aide told Puck News. “Counterparts are saying they’re not going to test anymore. It’s not an official mandate but we all know we’re not letting COVID get in the way. The deal is happening. Less testing, just wear masks and get it done.”

Another source told the outlet that even if a senator did catch the virus, “you can bring your ventilator and still vote.”

Unlike the House, the Senate does not allow proxy voting, meaning members who cannot make it to the floor due to illness are out of luck.

Earlier in the week – before moderate Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.) got on board with Schumer and Sen. Joe Manchin’s (D-WV) climate and energy plan – the Democratic leader insisted his party was “going to stay healthy” ahead of a potential vote.

“We’re not talking about a plan B,” Schumer said at the time.

Concerns about having all 50 Democrats and Democrat-voting Independents present on the Senate floor have grown in recent weeks, as several senators have tested positive for COVID or been absent for other health reasons.

In late June, Senate President Pro Tempore Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) fell in his Virginia home and broke his hip – keeping him out of Washington until this week. He ultimately underwent two surgeries.

Sen. Kyrsten Sinema agreed to a compromise for the spending plan — likely giving Democrats 50 votes for the bill in the Senate.

Just a week before, Republican Sen. Kevin Cramer of North Dakota seriously injured his hand during a yard work incident.

In early July, Schumer and Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) tested positive for COVID-19, both reporting mild symptoms. Days later, Manchin and Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska also reported positive tests.

Ironically, Schumer accused Senate Republicans of not taking COVID-19 seriously in the fall of 2020, when a spate of positive tests threatened to derail the confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett.

“Every Senator and relevant staff must have negative tests on two consecutive days and have completed the appropriate quarantining period, and there should be mandatory testing every day of the [confirmation] hearing,” Schumer said in a statement on Oct. 5 of that year. “Testing must be administered by an independent entity, such as the Attending Physician of the United States Congress. Failure to implement a thorough testing approach would be intentionally reckless, and could reasonably lead some wonder if Chairman [Lindsey] Graham and Leader [Mitch] McConnell may not want to know the results.”

If the bill clears the planned Saturday test vote, a series of debates and votes on Republican amendments is expected to follow before a potential vote on final passage sometime Sunday. The legislation would then go to the House.

Sinema agreed to support the measure on Thursday after a provision taxing profits earned by hedge fund, venture capital and private equity executives known as carried interest was removed. In exchange, a 1% tax on corporate stock buybacks was added.

Despite its name, several economic experts — and even the White House — have suggested the Inflation Reduction Act would have little impact on the historic price spikes being felt across the country.

Swanbourne: Ginger Owl’s cacti ‘hacked down by vandals’ for second time in just over a year

A Perth cactus which has provided the backdrop for countless photos has been hacked down for the second time in little more than a year.

Staff at Swanbourne fashion boutique Ginger Owl vented their fury after the four-meter tall plant was damaged on Friday night.

“Our beautiful cactus has been targeted again… one year on but this time it’s worse,” a post from the business on Instagram read.

Your local paper, whenever you want it.

“Two low-life a**holes decided to hack, steal and vandalize our beautiful plant just after midnight (Friday).”

The cactus was planted over three years ago and at the time was barely one meter tall.

It has now quadrupled in size since then – and garnered quite the following.

“This cactus has become iconic. The love and attention it gets is unbelievable,” Ginger Owl’s post read.

“We have witnessed wedding parties in front of it, bloggers, brides and grooms, fashion labels, influencers and the general public.

“It was the perfect backdrop and specimen.”

Staff rounded out the post by saying the plant needed to be protected from “low-lifes” who think “they can hack an arm or two off it”.

It is understood that no official complaint has been made to the police. Ginger Owl management were sought for comment.

MORE:

In July last year police were called to investigate after a thief was caught on camera carving off a large branch from the plant.

Police said a man got out of a car on North Street with a machete before getting to work.

“He just gets out a machete and he’s gone,” Senior Sergeant Peter Gilmour said at the time.

“In my time in the western suburbs I’ve investigated wildflowers and rose bushes being stolen, so it’s quite common here.”

Osborne Park: Crowd spotted dumpster diving for shoes at Betts

Forget dumpster diving for food — the lure of free shoes had these thrifty sandgropers raiding a skip bin outside the head office of a popular shoe retailer.

A crowd of people were spotted outside Betts’ headquarters in Osborne Park on Saturday afternoon after word spread of two big bins full of shoes.

“I’m sure it’s already been shared on the Perth feral community pages … but hurry on down to (Betts’) head office in Osborne Park and help raid the two giant skip bins full of shoes,” a social media user posted on Facebook.

“Or if that’s too much work check out any of the markets or some IGAs around Perth tomorrow.”

Betts Group chief executive Todd Wilner was on his way to the office with another senior executive to clean up the mess on Sunday when he told The West Australian the shoes were samples, some of them with holes drilled into them, and none were in pairs.

Mr Wilner said the company was very conscious about waste and had reached out to charities in the past but were told the shoes were not wanted unless they were in pairs.

He said if there was a charity who would be interested in using the samples he wanted to hear from them.

“If there is an organization out there who is prepared to work with us and take single shoes, we are absolutely happy to work with them to reduce our waste,” he said.

Dumpster diving — when people rummage through bins to find edible food, usually discarded at shopping centers — has made headlines recently after a City of Fremantle councilor was caught in the act last month.

Elon Musk’s dad Errol Musk denies he is ‘not proud’ of his son after Kyle and Jackie O Show comments

Elon Musk’s father created a whirlwind of controversy this week after telling Australian radio hosts he is not proud of his billionaire son.

Errol Musk, 76, told Daily Mail Australia his three daughters were so upset with the comments on Kyle and Jackie O they refused to speak to him for days.

But the retired electrical engineer said the comments were misunderstood and that he didn’t properly hear the question.

‘Elon knows it’s not true, so he would never get upset about it. He just laughs this kind of stuff off,’ Mr Musk said.

‘But the last message Elon sent to me was ”Dad, the press play you like a fiddle so please keep quiet”.’

While the two have shared a somewhat rocky relationship over the years, Mr Musk said he had been proud of Elon since ‘the day he was born’.

Errol Musk (right) said his billionaire son Elon (left) knows his comments to Kyle and Jackie O are ‘not true’ – ‘he would never get upset about it. He just laughs this kind of stuff off’

The media storm follows bombshell revelations last month that Mr Musk has fathered two children with his stepdaughter Jana Bezuidenhout, 34.

It also comes on the heels of Elon’s ongoing tensions with US President Joe Biden – as well as his bitter legal fight to pull out of the $44 billion ($63billion AUD) Twitter buyout, something his father says he may partly be responsible for.

The Australian radio interview

During Monday’s radio interview on KIIS FM, Jackie O said: ‘Your offspring is a genius. He’s worth so much money and has created so many things, you can’t take that away from him. Are you proud?’

But Mr Musk shocked listeners by replying ‘no’.

‘You know, we are a family that have been doing a lot of things for a long time, it’s not as if we suddenly started doing something,’ Errol replied.

I have clarified the awkward mix-up by saying: ‘I didn’t actually notice her question about being proud? I thought she asked “were you expecting this coming?”

‘It was only when I listened to the recording afterwards that I realized.’

Mr Musk, who was calling from South Africa, said he simply got lost in the conversation of the energetic hosts.

‘It was a bit more confusing because the other chap (Kyle), who was a nice fellow, was laughing a lot so I never quite picked up what she (Jackie O) was saying while I was talking,’ he said.

‘If you ask any parent if they are proud of their son, you are proud of them from the day they are born.’

But while he knows Elon is far too busy to be concerned about how his comments were reported, he revealed his daughters were extremely upset.

‘I still fly airplanes but my kids think I should go to a retirement home after that,’ he joked.

‘All three of them got a hold of me and said “what’s wrong with you, how could you possibly say something like that?”

‘Alexandra wouldn’t even speak to me. I kept sending her messages from her but she refused to talk.’

Mr Musk has since explained his mistake and he and his daughters are once again on good terms.

Backlash after having children with his stepdaughter

Kyle and Jackie O also asked Mr Musk about his relationship with 34-year-old stepdaughter Jana Bezuidenhout – who he was married to and shares two young children with.

He was married to her mother Heide Bezuidenhout in the early 1990s for two years before they divorced and Jana was placed in foster care.

‘I never really saw her much at all after that but Then in about 2014, she wrote to me and said she was in a desperate situation living in a store room with some chap and they had no food and her eight-year-old daughter had been put into care,’ Mr Musk said.

‘The next day I went to see her and I sorted her out with some funds. She was so thin – I couldn’t believe anybody could be as thin as she was.

‘She is a real princess but she was dressed in rags so I took her [shopping] for clothing and food.’

Mr Musk continued to provide her with money for a number of years and the two grew closer.

‘She left her boyfriend and came to me at one point when she was about 30 years old,’ he said.

‘Obviously there was a big generation gap but we really liked each other and enjoyed each other’s company.

‘We had a little boy, Elliot Rush who is now five, and I can’t imagine a world without him.’

Jana also welcomed a girl, Asha Rose Musk, in 2019.

‘She since has gone back to that boyfriend, and he is more her age, but I provide them with an apartment and medical aid, a car and whatever they need,’ he said.

‘We’ve never had DNA tests done because we love her anyway, no matter what. The main thing is we all love her.

‘They both have their little life and I don’t interfere. I get along with her boyfriend great. And Jana’s mother loves them too.’

Elon’s battle with Biden and the Twitter deal

Mr Musk said he’s never had any doubts about Elon when it comes to his work ethic or scientific mind.

The 51-year-old is the world’s richest person after amassing a fortune of US$242billion, following his incredible success with the payment service platform PayPal, solar car company Tesla and the rocket-building firm Space X.

But his father does ‘worry’ about his recent political statements and the immense pressure he’s under.

‘At the beginning of this year Elon started making a lot of political statements because of this Biden situation in the United States,’ Mr Musk said.

‘You have this really strange thing where you have this guy who can’t put two sentences together who is supposed to be the President.

‘I told Elon, you are getting into the political side now. How is your security? You have to be careful because the political situation is very dangerous.’

The US President earlier this year ruffled Elon’s feathers by ignoring Tesla and calling rival manufacturer GM – the nation’s electric car leader.

Mr Musk said Elon’s growing appetite for politics coincided with his ambition to purchase the social media platform Twitter for $44billion ($63billion AUD).

‘Elon had this idea that both sides have their chance to give their opinions, not just one side,’ his father said.

‘Then he decided he was going to go after Twitter with a plan to make it a neutral platform – that’s all he wanted. But from my experience that was a bit naïve.’

Now the tech billionaire and Twitter are set to go to court after Elon blew up the deal, accusing the company of drastically under-estimating the number of fake accounts.

‘A little while ago I tried to join Twitter and it told me I already had a profile with over 400 posts,’ Mr Musk said.

‘It was a fake account. It had foul language and all sorts of stuff like that. It was not me.

‘I mentioned that to Elon recently and told him to keep it in mind – and Elon has realized that now and he’s said ‘I’m not going to buy this platform if it’s full of a bunch of fake accounts’.’

'I told Elon, you are getting into the political side now. How is your security? You have to be careful because the political situation is very dangerous, 'Errol Musk said he advised his son Elon

WA roads: Fatal Safety Bay motorkbike crash extends horror weekend for State’s drivers

A horror weekend on WA roads has continued after a motorbike rider was killed in a tragic crash in Perth’s south.

The Harley Davidson rider was traveling along Safety Bay Road when he left the tarmac and struck a powerpole near the intersection of Malibu Road about 2am on Sunday.

The 44-year-old rider suffered catastrophic injuries and died at the scene.

It brought to four the number of fatalities on WA roads this weekend.

On Friday night a woman behind the wheel of a Ford Fiesta died after crashing her car into a tree in Kondinin, 280 kilometers east of Perth in the Wheatbelt.

The 23-year-old driver was traveling west along the Corrigin-Kondinin Road near Skyes Road about 11.45 when tragedy occurred.

She suffered critical injuries and died at the scene.

Meanwhile a 50-year-old man was killed when his car clipped a sign and smashed through a southern suburbs recreation store in Perth’s south on Friday night.

Authorities said a Holden Commodore and Toyota Hilux were traveling along South Street, approaching Stock Road, in O’Connor about 7.15pm when they collided, setting off the tragic set of events.

A witness described the horrifying moment the Commodore hurtled through the air, flipping multiple times as it narrowly missed a petrol station and smashed into a neighboring shop.

“I just was standing there in shock, thinking like ‘what just happened’,” Dev Mankar said.

“I heard the crash… and looked out my window and saw the car flip,” Mr Mankar added.

“It was a very fast crash … with a lot of air time.”

The 47-year-old man driving the Toyota managed to escape with only minor injuries.

Trump speaks at 2022 CPAC

Former President Trump addressed the Conservative Political Action Conference on Saturday.

“The proud patriots here today are the beating heart of the conservative movement,” Trump said after taking the stage to the stirrings of The Village People’s hit “YMCA”

“You are the loyal defenders of our heritage, culture, our Constitution and our God-given rights. You never stop fighting for America, and I will never ever stop fighting for you.”

Trump was frequently interrupted by raucous applause from the GOP activists who gathered for the CPAC conference in the Hilton Anatole’s Trinity Ballroom in Dallas.

In a nearly two hour address, the former president threw out hefty chunks of red meat, coming out in favor of stop-and-frisk policing and the death penalty for drug dealers — a punishment he said was used in China for such offenses.

The speech also came with the standard denunciations of old foes like Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell — who he branded an “old broken crow” — and, of course, President Joe Biden.

“You could take the five worst presidents in American history and put them together and they would not have done the damage Joe Biden has done to our country in two years,” he said.

Trump, however, was mum on whether he would seek a rematch with Biden in 2024.

“I ran twice and won twice and I did much better the second time than I did the first. And now we may have to do it again,” was all he offered.

The question of whether or not Trump will seek to reclaim the White House in 2024 has dominated GOP political circles in recent months. The former president — now 76 years old — has publicly teased the possibility with little subtlety.

“I’ve already made that decision,” he told New York Magazine last month, adding that the only decision left for him was whether he would announce something before or after the midterm elections.

Party grandees privately hope he holds off until after November so as not to jeopardize GOP candidates in the midterm elections, but generally accept they have no power to influence his timing.

Trump handily won the CPAC straw poll suggesting enthusiasm among base Republican voters has not wanted despite his social media ban, two impeachments, and an ongoing probe about his actions during the Jan. 6 riots.

Celeste Barber wants to make people laugh by ‘taking the p***’ out of celebrities

Celeste Barber wants to make people laugh by “taking the p***” out of celebrities.

The 40-year-old social media star rose to fame by parodying A-listers on Instagram and explained that her work is a look at the “multi-billion dollar body shaming industry”.

She said: “I realized that there were all these kinds of images being put out there, that were sold off as being normal and every day.”

“When you bought a magazine you knew, oh that’s Cindy Crawford being Cindy Crawford but on social media, it got sold as, ‘this is what everyone looks like,’ and I was like, ‘no, I don’t reckon that’s how people really look,’ or ‘I know I don’t look like that,’ so I did ap***-take on it.

“It’s a look at celebrity culture, the beauty industry, the fashion industry, the multibillion-dollar body-shaming industry so it’s just kind of nice to cut through that a bit.”

The comedienne – who has garnered almost 10 million followers online and has impressed the likes of Naomi Watts, Bella Hadid, Halle Berry, Gwyneth Paltrow and Drew Barrymore with her videos – explained that Hollywood stars realize that she is commenting on a “bigger” issue when she creates a parody of them and is able to “cut through” industry norms with her photos.

She told the New York Times’ Page Six column: “They understand it’s a look at something bigger than the individual. The world that they’re in… it’s cutting through the industry, you’re not taking it too seriously.”

“But I think the success that I’ve had is that I’m funny … My goal is first and foremost to make someone laugh. You make someone laugh and then we all kind of even out. That’s always been my goal, to make people laugh.”

Kyle Chalmers lands at Adelaide airport after Commonwealth Games Cody Simpson and Emma McKeon drama

Kyle Chalmers is collected by his mum as he returns to Australia after threatening to quit swimming during the Commonwealth Games over ‘love triangle’ drama with Cody Simpson and Emma McKeon

  • Kyle Chalmers all smiles as he arrives at Adelaide Airport on Saturday
  • The swimmer won three golds and a silver at the Commonwealth Games
  • Chalmers was greeted by his mother, sharing a laugh as they walked
  • Chalmers considered leaving the sport over ‘love triangle’ claims at Games

Champion swimmer Kyle Chalmers was all smiles arriving home from a successful Commonwealth Games, looking to put the ‘love triangle’ drama that almost derailed his campaign in the rear-vision mirror.

Chalmers was met by his mother at Adelaide airport and appeared in good spirits.

He donned a black hoodie with a pair of Australian swim team tracksuit pants.

The Commonwealth Games gold medalist beamed at waiting media as he wheeled his luggage through the airport alongside his mother.

During the game he said he was considering quitting the sport after the drama surrounding the reported swimming ‘love triangle’ between himself, former girlfriend Emma McKeon and her new beau Cody Simpson.

The drama made headlines when the 4×100 mixed relay team won gold on the opening night but the celebrations appeared tinged by awkwardness as McKeon and Chalmers did not shake hands after securing victory.

Speaking at a press conference in Birmingham, Chalmers threatened to quit swimming altogether if ‘false news’ continued to circulate that he was in a feud with McKeon and Simpson.

After taking gold in the 100m freestyle on Tuesday, Chalmers put his fingers to his lips in a gesture that suggested he was silencing his critics after taking gold.

He had also said there were moments he had felt like he ‘could not continue on’ and said he hoped his latest win was ‘a learning point for everybody’ – including the media.

Chalmers also rubbished reports of a rift in the team, saying after his last race at the Games he was ‘relieved’ it was now over.

‘There’s so many things to be grateful for: being part of the team, it’s special,’ he told Channel 7 after swimming the anchor leg for Australia in their 4x100m mixed medley.

‘And we are all so close and it’s been a very, very successful week in the pool for us and, hopefully, we’re able to celebrate a little bit tonight as a team and, obviously, we all depart tomorrow.’
