A young California bank executive has been identified as the third person killed in a freak caught-on-camera lightning strike near the White House last week.
Brooks Lambertson, a 29-year-old Los Angeles-based vice president at City National Bank, was identified by DC police as the third fatality from Thursday night’s strike that also left a fourth person in critical condition.
He was killed alongside James Mueller, 76, and Donna Mueller, 75, childhood sweethearts from Wisconsin who were in the capital celebrating their 56th wedding anniversary.
All four had been in Lafayette Park — yards from the White House fence — when cameras caught a huge bolt striking a tree they were near.
City National Bank said Sunday that it was “devastated to learn of the sudden death of one of our colleagues.”
“Brooks was an incredible young man who will be remembered for his generosity, kindness and unwavering positivity,” the bank said.
“Our thoughts and condolences are with his loving family, his many friends and our colleagues. His joyful spirit will live on in our hearts, ”the bank said.
The news sparked tributes for Lambertson, who previously worked as a marketing manager for the LA Clippers and was in DC for business when he was struck.
“He was a joy to work with and a wonderful colleague!” one shocked staffer said, while another wrote about how they “loved working with him.”
Brooks always lit up the room with his million-dollar smile,” that colleague wrote, while another praised his “generosity” and “kindness and unwavering” positive energy.
The fourth person, an unidentified woman, was listed in critical condition on Friday, the police department said. There was no immediate update early Sunday.
Secret Service officers had been among the first to respond to the tragedy and offer first aid, officials announced last week.
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said the administration was “saddened by the tragic loss of life.”
“This is the people’s house. It should be a place all can see,” she said.
Shoppers on Perth’s King Street were left shocked and frightened after spotting a man roaming around with what appeared to be a dangerous assault rifle on Sunday afternoon.
But after police responded under emergency conditions, it appeared to be a case of mistaken identity — with it revealed the gunman was a male stripper on his way to work dressed as a sexy SWAT officer.
Police quickly confirmed the 31-year-old man was no real threat to the community and that his weapon was part of his adult entertainment work attire.
Your local paper, whenever you want it.
And it turned out he was committed to giving an authentic performance, as the weapon he was carrying was believed to be a gel blaster.
Gel blaster firearms are prohibited in WA.
A person caught in possession of a gel blaster can face maximum penalties of up to three years in prison or a $36,000 fine.
WA outlawed the weapons — which shoot water-filled gel pellets at 100m/second — in July last year following a rise of criminals smuggling the replica guns into the State and converting them into real ones.
At the time, Police Minister Paul Papalia said police were unable to tell the difference between gel blasters and real guns out on the street.
“It is a far too dangerous situation to tolerate any longer,” he said.
“When a police officer is responding to a call out, they will be assuming someone is in possession of a firearm.”
The surge of gel blasters became an issue for police who reported being confronted by the weapons almost 150 times in 2020.
The adult entertainer was taken into custody clad in his SWAT uniform and ballistic vest and the gel blaster was seized.
Police said the man was “assisting with the investigation” as the firearm undergoes an inspection to determine whether it is functional.
“The investigation into the functionality of the seized firearm and the circumstances surrounding it being carried in public is ongoing,” a WA Police spokesman said.
Even though police determined there was not a legitimate threat to the community, the force’s spokesman said it was an important reminder that there are consequences for flaunting realistic weapons in public and for owning prohibited weapons.
“The members of the public who called for police assistance had genuine concerns for their safety and the safety of others,” the spokesman said.
“The firearm in question looks very real and it would be very difficult for any member of the public to be able to determine whether it was in fact real or not.”
Police are trying to track down some brazen thieves following a string of handbag burglaries at an East Victoria Park shopping center on Saturday.
Three women were targeted by the thieves throughout the afternoon, who snatched their handbags and purses while their backs were turned.
A woman in her 80s had her handbag stolen while she was unloading her shopping at about 2.00pm.
Your local paper, whenever you want it.
She was parked in a disability bay at the northern end of the shopping center on Albany Highway and placed her bag in the boot.
Two women approached the vehicle and stole the handbag.
Almost three hours later, a woman in her 30s realized her purse was missing after putting her shopping in the car at the same center. She initially went home, but returned to check whether it had been left in a trolley.
The purse was taken and the woman’s debit card had been used twice at a nearby bottle shop.
In another incident earlier in the day, a 45-year-old woman left her handbag in a trolley while she was browsing nearby.
When she turned back she saw a woman holding her purse.
Upon being spotted, the thief dropped the purse and fled the scene into a silver Holdon Commodore sedan.
It is believed several shoppers witnessed the attempted burglary and may have taken videos or photos of the offender.
Police have urged anyone with information about the three incidents to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or report it online at www.crimestopperswa.com.au.
Former President Donald Trump strongly indicated he is preparing to run for president and suggested an announcement will come soon.
Trump, who has repeatedly said that he’s made a decision on the 2024 race, was asked by Fox News Digital at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Texas when Republicans could expect a formal announcement.
“It’s certainly not a very long period, the time is coming,” said the former president. “I think people are going to be very happy, our country has never been in a position like this, we’ve lost everything.”
Trump said that America was facing both domestic and foreign policy crises. In particular, I have argued the country’s “prestige” had been damaged by President Biden’s botched withdrawal from Afghanistan.
“Our country has never been at a worse point,” said Trump. “They gave away $85 billion worth of equipment, dead soldiers, you still have Americans over there probably as hostages, eventually will be hostages, there has never been a time like this.
“We’ll be making an announcement in the not too distant future,” Trump added.
The remarks came shortly after CPAC unveiled its straw poll showing Trump as the overwhelming favorite for the 2024 GOP nomination among the conservative grassroots. Trump captured nearly 70% of the ballots cast at the conference, with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis coming in at a distant second at 23.7%.
Since leaving the White House in January 2021, Trump has maintained an active presence within the Republican Party.
The former president has endorsed an expansive list of candidates running for everything from local and state offices to the United States Senate.
ORLANDO, Fla. – The National Hurricane Center is watching a tropical wave for possible development after weeks of silence in the Atlantic.
The wave is located off the west coast of Africa and is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms over the far eastern tropical Atlantic, according to the NHC.
“Environmental conditions appear generally conducive for gradual development of this system while it moves westward to west-northwestward at 15 to 20 mph across the eastern and central tropical Atlantic, and a tropical depression could form around the middle part of this week.”
The area has a 40% chance of development over the next five days and could potentially become a tropical depression by mid-week.
“If it were to become anything, this would be Danielle,” FOX 35 Storm Team Meteorologist Ian Cassette said.
There has been no major hurricane to form this season, just three tropical storms: Alex, Bonnie, and Colin, and even though this is less active than past seasons, it is on schedule for an average season.

We are now moving closer to the peak of hurricane season, which is Sept. 10, and roughly 90% of tropical activity occurs after Aug. 1. Therefore, both NOAA and Colorado State remain confident in their predictions.
The experts at Colorado State University and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released their updated 2022 Atlantic hurricane season outlooks Thursday. Both organizations decreased the forecast number of named storms from what they initially predicted in earlier outlooks, but they say you should still prepare for an active season.
CSU is still expecting an above-average season with 18 named storms, eight of which could become hurricanes with winds of at least 74 mph. Experts say out of the hurricanes, four of them could be major (Category 3 or higher) with winds of at least 115 mph.
NOAA expects a similar outcome to the Atlantic hurricane season, predicting 14 to 20 named storms, six to 10 hurricanes and three to five major hurricanes, which is a slight decrease from its initial outlook in May.

If you’re not in Europe escaping the chill, you could instead bask in the glow of a good bargain when dining out. Melbourne restaurants and pubs are tackling the notoriously quiet winter months with all kinds of specials on food and drinks.
Monday might be pasta night, Tuesday brings deals on schnitzels and the bargains continue right through until Sunday, if you know where to look.
Seddon restaurant Superchido serves a Mexican menu that’s broader in reach than many others around town. But on Wednesdays, people eat for tacos. Two tortillas loaded with pork, beer-battered barramundi or grilled veg are available for $10; desserts are the same price.
While it was initially a night targeted to locals, the restaurant now gets people traveling from all over Melbourne for the deal.
“It’s equivalent to the foot traffic we get on a Friday,” says chief marketing officer Beatrice Pineda.
Pineda says that business is steady throughout the week, but the Wednesday special provides a mid-week boost. “That alleviates the pressure on Friday and Saturday night trades.”
While Wednesday diners will mostly stick to the discounted items on the menu, they will often spend more on drinks.
Get the latest news and updates emailed straight to your inbox.
Superchido, like other venues, has been offering these deals since the start of the year and say they haven’t noticed any change in their popularity in recent months, despite four consecutive interest rate rises and surging costs of essentials like fuel.
Specials like these could be helping to fuel continued growth in transactions on dining out and takeaway, which grew by 8.6 per cent in the June quarter according to latest ABS data.
Ripponlea Food and Wine has noticed that Friday and Saturday trade continues to be strong, with people ordering lots of cocktails. But on Wednesday and Thursday, diner spend per head is half what it is on weekends.
A long-running pasta and wine night for $40 each Wednesday helps keep tables full.
“Mid-week, you need to tap into value for money. Diners are not necessarily looking to spend $100 a head,” says director Lisa Slaughter.
Dining deals often become more common in winter, as venues compete against the pull of staying indoors.
Throughout August, restaurant booking platform The Fork has set up deals where venues offer set menus at $99, $79 or $49. In Victoria, 49 restaurants are participating, including big names like Turkish restaurant Tulum and Federation Square’s Taxi Kitchen.
“It’s a good way for venues to acquire new customers,” says head of marketing James Walmsley. “We know it’s expensive for venues to do their own marketing… but the most expensive thing for a restaurant is an empty table.”
As interest rate decisions catch up with consumers, some say they’re starting to pull back their discretionary spending, or plan to in future. A third of those surveyed in July by restaurant booking platform SevenRooms said dining out would be the first budget item they’d cut.
That could mean more bargains are on the table for savvy diners in coming months, even as warmer weather arrives.

A grandmother claims workers at a McDonald’s bullied and refused to serve her – with her granddaughter now too scared to return.
Tracey Lintern said she visited the Ormeau fast food outlet on the Gold Coast more than a month ago, asking staff to keep her fries warm while she ordered other food.
She then attended the same restaurant last Saturday, and claimed staff mocked and belittled her, before refusing to serve her food.
A grandmother says the treatment of workers at a Gold Coast McDonald’s bullied and refused to serve her – with her special needs granddaughter now too scared to return
Ms Lantern was with her granddaughter at the time, who has anxiety and PTSD, who started to cry after the alleged treatment.
‘She’s crying saying “Grandma what’s going on”,’ the grandmother told the Gold Coast Bulletin.
‘No one served me, so I just walked out.’
Ms Linter picked up an order of a single hot fries for a friend the first time she visited the McDonald’s.
She had recently moved into the area and was ‘so excited’ there was a McDonald’s nearby.
After arriving she decided to order more food, asking servers to keep the food warm.
When the chips were given to her, Ms Linter said they were cold and asked for a new order, which staff did.
The grandmother then turned up last Saturday, where she claims staff immediately treated her poorly.
‘I was buying dinner for all the family so I decided to go inside with such a large order,’ she said.
‘The same [worker] was on. As soon as she saw me she started to talk about me to other staff members.
‘I wasn’t even at the counter yet, then they all turned around at me to see who she was talking about.’
Ms Linter said the staff mocked her before refusing to take her order – humiliating her and her granddaughter (stock image)
Ms Lantern said a worker alerted other staff, who turned and laughed at the grandmother.
After walking to the counter to complain about the treatment, a female employee said she wouldn’t serve her because ‘last time you came in you were rude’.
The employee then allegedly threatened to call security, prompting Ms Linter’s granddaughter to burst into tears.
‘I was so excited when I moved here that McDonald’s was so close, as I would normally go twice a day, but now I can’t bring myself to go,’ Ms Linter said.
‘Why would you want to go back for that treatment, all over wanting hot chips?’
McDonald’s said it was investigating Ms Linter’s complaint.
‘We do not tolerate anti-social behavior and won’t accept abuse, intimidation, threats or violence towards our employees,’ it said.
‘Our employees have the right to be treated with respect and feel safe in their workplace.
‘We have received the customer’s complaint and it is being reviewed by our team.’
Confronted with someone else’s wallet, most would like to think they’d drop it off to the nearest police station with the money and cards left inside.
But for one woman, the temptation of a wild night out on the town, an all-expenses-paid trip to a sex shop and pricey Qantas flights proved too strong.
University of Wollongong student Kirsten McNeice revealed her credit card was stolen and used for an extraordinary range of purchases, including bras, booze, food and sex toys.
Ms McNeice wasn’t aware of the woman’s weekend of paywaving until she looked at her bank statement earlier this week – something she now urges everyone to do more often.
The unknown woman spent more than $3,000 dollars on Ms McNeice’s card, according to bank statements seen by Daily Mail Australia.
She appeared to have made multiple trips to a popular Wollongong club, splashing cash around each time.
University of Wollongong student Kirsten McNeice (pictured) has revealed how her credit card was stolen before the thief went on a spending spree
The woman had multiple innings’ at Mr Crown (pictured) in Wollongong and spent nearly $400 at the venue
The thief’s daytime trips to Mr Crown, a public bar and nightclub, were broken up with visits to a Shellharbour bra and lingerie store and a $200 manicure.
She also ensured she would have a quick getaway when her hijinks outgrew the small industrial city – spending $876 on a Qantas ticket.
An $876 ticket would enable her to go to almost anywhere within southeast Asia and the Pacific, according to Qantas’ current offers.

Ms McNeigh posted the bank records (pictured) on social media to the excitement of many University of Wollongong students
The unknown thief then parted at Mr Crown again, appearing to have ordered generously at the bar.
After leaving the pub, the woman bought a dinner at a local kebab shop with the $27 card swipe suggesting she opted for multiple kebabs or ‘snack packs’, perhaps to share with her friends.
The woman, at some point, retreated home for the evening, reloading for a Tuesday morning visit to the shops.
The mystery shopper made two matching purchases at Myer, a quick trip to Chemist Warehouse, and dropped a cool $80 at pajama store Peter Alexander.
The Wollongong grifter made an online fruit purchase before trundling down to a local Boost Juice, perhaps still craving a fruity hangover fix.
She then trekked to a quieter part of Wollongong, spending more than $400 at a discreet sex store, the Adult Warehouse, in the west of the city.
After that, her spending spree appeared to come to an abrupt stop.
Ms McNeice is already on track to receive her money back she said, but the culprit is still on the run.
‘Now it’s just a matter of finding her,’ she told Daily Mail Australia.
‘Thirteen rounds of drinks for your girlfriends at Mr Crown followed by a snack pack at King Kebabs? Respect.’
Ms McNeice said she believes she already had the name of the woman behind the in-and-out spree after asking a few of the businesses where the cash was spent.
Purchases made at a discreetly named company were actually for this Adult Warehouse store in the industrial area of Wollongong
Ms McNeice has left a statement with the police as they try to find the culprit.
Students in a local University of Wollongong Facebook group have followed developments in the case with interest, with one joking the episode needed to be a true crime podcast.
Ms McNeice had posted the expense sheets originally to the group, allowing the others to follow the inglorious money trail for themselves.
A later post in the group spurred a flurry of messages guessing at where the mystery woman would be by then.
‘She’s either at Mr Crown or Bras and Things, or on her way back to Mr Crown from Bras and Things,’ joked another.
‘Damn, did she get around… she wouldn’t have gotten that far on my bank card that’s for sure.’
EXCLUSIVE: Amber Heard is spotted in Israel with controversial journalist who was banned from her defamation trial with Johnny Depp for live-Tweeting in the courtroom
Amber Heard was pictured pushing an empty stroller while on vacation in Tel Aviv following her heated defamation trial with ex Johnny Depp

Earlier in the week, she was spotted visiting a bookstore in the city and enjoying lunch with controversial journalist and friend, Eve Barlow
Barlow has remained close with Heard and was barred from the defamation trial for repeatedly taking her phone out and trying to advise Heard’s team

Amber Heard was spotted walking around Israel and dining at a central Tel Aviv cafe on Monday with her friend, Eve Barlow, the controversial Zionist journalist who got herself banned from the Johnny Depp defamation trial.
Heard was out and about wearing a black dress, flip-flops and a blue cap.
While in Tel Aviv, she was also spotted browsing bookstores and enjoying lunch with Barlow, who stood by her during the trial and was prevented from observing proceedings in April, after she was caught texting and tweeting from the front row of the courtroom, which is generally reserved for legal counsel.

Fresh off her defamation lawsuit with ex-husband Johnny Depp, Amber Heard was spotted in Tel Aviv earlier this week
She also reportedly tried to provide legal counsel to Heard’s team by showing them social media posts of a Depp witness, which she alleged were compromising. Depp’s lawyers successfully filed a motion to have Barlow permanently barred from the courtroom.
After gaining backlash online for her fervent support of Heard, Barlow claimed that the negative comments against her were fueled by misogyny and anti-Semitism.

Barlow (right), the former deputy editor of the music bible NME and contributor for New York Magazine, remained by Heard’s (left) side over the past year
JC Halper, owner of Halper’s Book Store in the Israeli city, said he was surprised to see Heard walking through his aisles on Tuesday as she purchased his book detailing his adventures at the store.
‘Say what you want about Amber Heard, (and what little I knew about her was negatively influenced by the media as well), the person who browsed my store last Tuesday for almost an hour, with her toddler baby girl and a couple of friends , was a modest, polite, friendly, inquisitive self-effacing customer with high literary tastes,’ Halper wrote.
Heard was also spotted earlier this week visiting a bookstore in Tel Aviv (pictured)
‘In fact, I had no idea that it was her until she presented her credit card. She is also now the proud owner of my book “The Bibliomaniacs” and she promised to send me feedback on it.’
The bookstore trip came a day after Heard was seen eating with Barlow, the former deputy editor of the music bible NME and contributor for New York Magazine.
Heard’s outing in Israel comes as both she and Depp filed appeals on the verdict the jury reached in their heated defamation case, which awarded Depp $10.35 million and Heard only $2 million.
She was ordered to pay Depp a total of $8.3 million after being found guilty of defamation, but says she doesn’t have enough cash to do so.

Ironically, The Daily Beast reported that attorneys for the actress were begging her to pursue what they felt were ‘tens of million of dollars’ she was entitled to through Depp’s ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ profits prior to their trial.
They alleged that because Depp made Pirates of the Caribbean 5 during the marriage, it was ‘community property’ and an asset Heard was entitled to half of.
Heard would not allow them to chase that money, with her lawyers saying via email that she was being ‘true to your word’ that it wasn’t about cash.
The prime suspect in two Dayton, Ohio, shootings that left four people dead has been taken into custody, police confirmed on Saturday.
Stephen Marlow, 39, was apprehended in Kansas by the Lawrence Police Department, Butler Township Police Chief John Porter said at a press conference. The suspect was captured around 10 pm
Porter said local authorities are making arrangements to extradite Marlow.
This puts an end to a multi-state search for Marlow, who was considered to be armed and dangerous. The Dayton area shooting on Friday included a teenage girl and her mother of her.
Eva and Clyde Knox were found dead in their home Friday morning. Sarah Anderson and her 15-year-old daughter Kayla were also discovered dead shortly after.
The suspect had fled the state in a white 2007 Ford Edge SUV bearing an Ohio license plate following the shootings.
Marlow was charged with four counts of aggravated murder on Friday.
On Saturday, prior to the apprehension, the US District Court for the Southern District of Ohio issued a federal arrest warrant on a charge of unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.
