Sydney Pork Rolls bakery lashed on Reddit over extra charge for cutting rolls in half

A Sydney bakery has been lashed online for charging customers a 20c surcharge just to cut their lunch in half.

A photo posted to Reddit revealed the Vietnamese bakery, Sydney Pork Rolls, has a list of surcharges for the addition of extra ingredients such as salad, chilli, meat, ham, egg, pate and mayo.

When purchasing a banh mi from the store in the inner Sydney suburb of Haymarket, the sign informs customers extra salad will set you back an extra 50c, while extra meat and egg is an extra $1.50.

However, the one surcharge that had customers smoking online is the extra charge for cutting the banh mi in half.

At the bottom of the surcharge list, the sign states a “request to cut your roll in half” will cost an extra 20 cents.

Users on Reddit were quick to express their disbelief at the extra charge.

“This is a joke!” one user commented. “This pricing is getting outrageous, all in the name of inflation,” another said.

“They should ask ‘would you like to cut it in half?’ like a fast food worker upselling (by) asking if ‘you want fries with that?’,” another declared.

However, some Reddit users defended the shop, saying the outlet was well within its rights to charge extra for the service.

“Getting it cut in half means the two halves are wrapped and packaged separately. It’s completely reasonable to charge extra,” one user commented.

WA regional and FIFO flights at risk of disruption as Virgin aircraft engineers prepare to strike

Air travel in WA — including in the FIFO sector — is at risk of further severe disruption as aircraft engineers servicing Virgin Australia’s regional fleet this week joined their Qantas Group counterparts in preparing for a wave of industrial action.

A ballot of about 1000 Qantas Group engineers on their support for a potential strike in protest over their pay and conditions closes on August 10, with the union representing the workers confident it will be decisively backed in.

The West Australian has revealed the Australian Licensed Aircraft Engineers Association this week launched a second ballot of the approximately 50 technicians working at Virgin Australia Regional Airlines.

Both polls — launched after obtaining protected action orders from the Fair Work Commission — canvas “work stoppages up to 12 hours in length” and “overtime bans”.

Between them, Qantas Group — which includes Jetstar and Network Aviation — and VARA operate the vast majority of both regular passenger and FIFO flights in WA.

VARA provides FIFO services for Rio Tinto and BHP and flies between Perth and a number of regional destinations including Broome, Darwin, Kalgoorlie, Karratha, Newman and Port Hedland.

ALAEA federal secretary Steve Purvinas said engineers at both airlines had endured years of pay freezes despite larger workloads, leading to fatigue and burnout.

He said Qantas Group engineers would commence “a token move of industrial action” within the next three weeks in the hope of prompting the national carrier back to the negotiating table.

The earliest VARA engineers would be able to engage in industrial action would be seven working days after their ballot closes on September 14.

Mr Purvinas claimed the union “do not intend to structure industrial action to disrupt services”.

“Our contest is with the airline, not the public,” he said.

“To that end we can have work stoppages but offer labor via overtime to cover the deficit in work. Certain options appear on the ballot paper but that does not necessarily mean they will be used.”

It remains to be seen what impact any kind of engineering downtime would have for airlines accustomed to operating on finely-tuned schedules.

Virgin Australia did not directly address questions about whether the airline was concerned about disruption to its WA services, a spokesperson saying only that the company was aware a protected action ballot had been launched.

“We intend to continue discussions with our team members and the ALAEA to understand the issues and work towards a new enterprise agreement,” the spokesperson said.

In a previous statement, Qantas Group said it was “disappointed” the union was threatening “completely unnecessary” industrial action.

“The latest claim by the ALAEA was for a one-year agreement with a 12 per cent pay rise for Qantas engineers,” the statement said.

“That’s something we simply can’t afford and is well above wage increases for other employees across the group.”

Mr Purvinas said the 12 per cent claim equaled to 3 per cent for each of the four years engineers’ pay had been frozen.

Both Qantas and Virgin Australia made headlines for their poor performance during the winter school holidays, including hundreds of flight cancellations and widespread delays.

In June, VARA had the worst on-time performance of any airline with nearly half of all flights either delayed or cancelled.

Travelers at Perth Airport endured another evening of chaos on Tuesday after severe storms cut off power to the site and backup generators servicing the terminals failed.

That forced all outgoing flights to be canceled — wrecking the travel plans of thousands of West Australians.

A man accused of fatally shooting three members of the same family kept his gun license more than a decade ago despite police applying to revoke it.

He was also charged with the attempted murder of Graham’s brother Ross, who survived the alleged shooting on Thursday morning and raised the alarm.

7NEWS understands that Young has held a gun license for decades. But in 2010, police rejected his renewal application.

He challenged the decision in the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal, saying he “used weapons on two properties to control feral animals”.

He also answered that he “had not contravened the weapons-related laws at any stage”.

Police argued at the time: “You are presently not a fit and proper person to hold a license.”

QCAT ruled in Young’s favour, saying: “Mr Young is a fit and proper person to hold a weapons license… (I) set aside the refusal to allow him to renew his license.”

Young’s case was heard early on Monday morning, the accused shooter appearing via video link.

His charges were read out before he was remanded in custody until November.

Ross remains in hospital, recovering in a stable condition.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to raise money for him and his family.

“We have created this fund to help them with the aftermath of suddenly having their worlds turned upside down,” it said.

“Please help us lessen some of this burden and unforeseen future costs.”

On Monday morning, almost $11,000 had been raised.

It’s understood that police will allege Young met his neighbors at the boundary line of their properties before the alleged shooting occurred.

Ross managed to flee by car before raising the alarm and being airlifted to Mackay Base Hospital, undergoing multiple emergency surgeries.

Police then swept the surrounding rural cattle properties.

Young and four other people were taken into custody, with all but the accused released without charge.

He will next appear in court on November 1.

Florida prosecutor Andrew Warren vows to fight Gov. DeSantis suspension

ST. PETERSURG, Fla. — A Florida prosecutor vowed Sunday to fight his suspension from office by Gov. Ron DeSantis over his promise of him not to enforce the state’s 15-week abortion ban and support for gender transition treatments for minors.

Andrew Warren, a Democrat suspended last week from his twice-elected post as state attorney in Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa, said in a Facebook video message and news release Sunday he plans a “vigorous defense” by his legal team but did not give specifics.

“I’m not going down without a fight,” Warren said on the video. “I refuse to let this man trample on your freedoms to speak your mind, to make your own health care decisions, and to have your vote count.”

Warren was suspended Thursday by DeSantis, a Republican seeking re-election in November and potential 2024 presidential candidate, who cited neglect of duty and other alleged violations. The governor contended that’s because Warren signed statements with dozens of other prosecutors nationwide vowing not to pursue criminal cases against people who seek or provide abortions or gender transition treatments.

Texas alleged drunk driver Miguel Espinoza leaves 4 dead in golf cart crash

Four people were killed and two others seriously injured in Texas when an alleged drunk driver blew a stop sign and caused a collision, cops said.

The two adults and two kids were traveling in a golf cart in Galveston when Miguel Espinoza, 45, allegedly flew through a stop sign and hit both the cart and a pickup truck at around 11:30 pm Saturday, according to Galveston police.

The golf cart driver was pronounced dead at the scene, while a woman and two juvenile passengers were rushed to an area hospital, where all three died.

The two remaining passengers, an adult and a juvenile, remain hospitalized in critical condition Sunday, police said.

Espinoza, of Rosenberg, TX, and his passenger suffered minor injuries and were treated in the hospital and released.

Espinoza was subsequently charged with four counts of intoxication manslaughter. He is being held in Galveston County jail on a $400,000 bond, police said.

The occupants of the pickup truck were unharmed.

The victims’ names and ages have not yet been released. Galveston police said they are members of two different families who had rented the golf cart, which they were legally driving on the city street.

Golf carts have become a popular transportation mode in the resort area roughly 50 miles southeast of Houston and city officials have created ordinances aimed at making them safer.

S1 Zeus: “I played very poorly. I’m incredibly mad at myself… I got greedy for POG votes, which led to misplays.”

On day 40 of the 2022 LCK Summer split, T1 defeated Nongshim RedForce 2-1 and secured a spot in round 2 of the playoffs. Despite NS showing fight in game 2, there was no upset in the series.

After the match, Choi “Zeus” Woo-je joined Inven to talk about his disappointment in his performance that day.

Zeus was brutally honest on his self-feedback:

“I played very poorly. I’m incredibly mad at myself. The Camille pick in game 1 was not only bad, but also played poorly on her. By taking Press the Attack on Renekton in game 2, I tried to pressure the enemy in lane very hard, but I couldn’t do that at all. I even died helplessly to a gank. In game 3, everything aligned for me to carry, but I couldn’t do that as well.

I actually practiced a lot of Renekton recently. I should’ve played better when he hit his power spike, but I didn’t. I couldn’t play as well as I could have. My opponents also played well, but there were things that were definitely disappointing on our end.”

On Renekton’s item build, Zeus commented,

“There’s a player on the Challenger solo queue ladder that takes Press the Attack and builds Blade of the Ruined King [BorK] into Prowler’s Claw. If that Renekton gets fed, then his damage output is insane. He can just delete the enemy bot laner, so I took reference from how he plays. I thought I could build the same way in game 2, but looking back, it may not have been so good. To be honest, the item build wasn’t the issue; the plays were. Ever since last year, I always seem to perform poorly on Renekton, so it’s a bit of a sore thumb in my career.”

However, there were some good things to take from the series for Zeus, as he added Renekton and Zac in the champions played during the Summer split. He tied with Kim “Canna” Chang-dong with 13 champions in first place.

“The fact that I had a chance to play the champions that I couldn’t on stage is a good experience in itself. There are so many champions that can be played in the top lane. The more champions I play, the more options I’ll have in the future, so I’m proactively trying to play different options in the top lane.

Zac is a very good champion when there are these prolonged, ‘wet noodle’ fights. Not only did my opponent first pick Ornn, Zac also seemed like the best option in that scenario. I practiced him quite a bit in solo queue recently, and he was really good. So I decided to try him tonight.”

On his performance on Zac in game 3, he also added,

“When there was that lane swap, I died trying to interrupt Kalista’s recall. That was when Ornn got ahead because he farmed a lot of waves. I thought that the damage was irreparable, so I decided to rotate bot lane to get our bot duo ahead. However, because of that, I fell behind in levels; I had to level E to get good engage angles, but due to such, I couldn’t find good jump angles. So I just jumped in whenever I saw potential angles.”

T1 has two matches remaining in the regular split, against Liiv SANDBOX and DWG KIA. On the matchups, I have commented,

“I think it’s more important for us to regain our form, rather than to focus on the opponents’ game plan. I recently received a lot of POG votes, so I got greedy, which led to my misplays. I’m reflecting on it, and I’ll make sure to put my team’s victory over my personal performance.”

Video catches teens crash stolen Kia, take off running on highway

Video from traffic cameras on a Minnesota highway shows a group of teenagers crash a stolen Kia and take off running.

It happened Saturday on Interstate 35E northbound, according to Fox 9. Footage shows a stolen Kia smash into a median after the driver attempted to avoid police stop sticks. Four teens then jump out of the smoking car, run and dodge traffic to get to the other side of the road where state troopers were waiting. All four were arrested: a 14-year-old boy and three girls ages 15-17.

Two of the girls had minor injuries and were taken to the hospital, authorities said.

The incident began around 5:30 pm when a rental car company contacted St. Paul Police saying they had a GPS tracker on a 2021 Kia Forte that had been stolen in Minneapolis and was headed to St. Paul, a police spokesman said.

“St. Paul Police requested assistance from a State Patrol helicopter, and the pilot used the coordinates from the GPS tracker to locate the car as it came to a stop on Portland and Dale streets in St. Paul,” Fox 9 reports.

The teens got back in the car as police squad cars approached. Officers stood back as the car traveled through a residential neighborhood, but the helicopter continued to track the Kia as the driver drove erratically down city streets and onto the highway, the police spokesman said.

The crash occurred roughly 15 minutes after the incident first began.

Law enforcement in the area have expressed concern about a nationwide trend this summer involving Hyundai and Kia thefts. A viral Tiktok video from the so-called “Kia Boys” shows thieves how to use a USB cable to steal rides.

Video captured the teens running away from the stolen car.

The automaker is so familiar with the rash of thefts it has issued the following statement to media outlets, including Fox 29 Philadelphia.

“Kia America is aware of the rise in vehicle thefts of a subset of trim levels,” the statement read. “All 2022 models and trims have an immobilizer applied either at the beginning of the year or as a running change. All Kia vehicles for sale in the US meet or exceed Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. Kia customers with questions regarding their Kia vehicle should contact the Consumer Assistance center directly at 1-800-333-4542.

“Hyundai Motor America is concerned with the rise in local auto thefts. The safety and well-being of our customers and the community is and will remain our top priority. These vehicles meet or exceed Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and engine immobilizers are standard equipment on all new Hyundai vehicles.
