Lisa Keightley steps down as England Women head coach

Lisa Keightley will leave her position as England Women’s head coach at the end of the summer after deciding not to pursue the option of a contract extension.

Keightley was appointed in late 2019, and guided England to the final of the 2022 ODI World Cup. She also oversaw runs to the semi-finals of the 2020 T20 World Cup and Commonwealth Games, where England were beaten in the bronze-medal match on Sunday.

She will continue to coach the team until the end of the home season, with limited-overs series against India scheduled next month. It is understood the decision to part ways was mutually agreed on before the Commonwealth Games.

The ECB will now begin the process of recruiting a new head coach ahead of the next Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa in February.

Although England failed to defend the World Cup they won in 2017, and missed out on successive T20 titles, Keightley’s period in charge was marked by an injection of younger talent into the side, with Sophia Dunkley establishing herself as a first-choice pick and the likes of Issy Wong, Alice Capsey and Freya Kemp coming through.

Jonathan Finch, the ECB’s director of England women’s cricket, said: “We are incredibly grateful for the commitment and passion Lisa has shown over the last two-and-a-half years in the role. We have seen increased competition for places over the Last 12 months and the squad Lisa leaves is an exciting blend of youth and experience.

“Leading an international team is challenging at the best of times. It is more challenging during a pandemic, and Lisa has been able to continue the development of the team during what has been the toughest period we have faced off the field.”

Clare Connor, ECB interim chief executive, said: “I’d like to place on record our sincere thanks to Lisa for all her efforts across the last two-and-a-half years.

“Lisa was always a fierce opponent when she represented Australia, and she’s brought that same pride, passion and will to win into everything she’s done with the England Women’s team.

“The team have enjoyed working with her immensely and I know they’ll join me in wishing her all the very best for her next challenge.”

Keightley’s departure follows that of her senior assistant and fellow Australian, Tim Macdonald, who announced in June that he would be leaving after the Commonwealth Games to take up an assistant coaching post with the Perth Scorchers and Western Australian men’s teams.

Farewell Barangaroo restaurant Bea, hello Rekodo Restaurant + Vinyl Bar

Bea, the upmarket restaurant in the multi-level Barangaroo House, will close on August 14.

But in good news for Barangaroo regulars, a succession plan for the space is already in place. Co-owner Matt Moran has revealed that Bea’s replacement, Rekodo Restaurant + Vinyl Bar (inspired by Japanese vinyl-spinning “listening rooms”) will open mid-September.

Bea opened in late 2017 with a big-name chef (Cory Campbell, ex-Vue de Monde and Noma) in charge of the kitchen. Tweaks and chef changes followed before the decision was made to rebrand the space.

Moran says after nearly five years operating the sprawling Barangaroo House, they have a good read of the area and believe Rekodo fills a need.

“The crowd down here has changed, even since we opened,” he says. “Rekodo will be fun, with large tables but still serious about its food.”

He adds the menu will offer more dishes than Bea, giving customers greater flexibility about how much they eat and spend.

While the refit will include a Klipsch La Scala sound system, much of the reinvigoration will be driven by chef Paddy McDermott, who worked out of Hong Kong and whom Moran credits with having an enviable knowledge of Japanese food.

While listening rooms are typically bars in Japan, Moran says Rekodo will be more of a “restaurant-bar” – one that includes its own DJ.

McDonald’s Australia: ‘Disgusting’ trend takes off on social media

‘Disgusting’ McDonald’s trend takes off across Australia – but fast-food workers are NOT impressed and it’s ruining their days: ‘Grow up mate, that’s not funny’

  • Disgusting new TikTok trend has emerged with Aussies pranking Maccas staff
  • Prank sees people replace Filet-O-Fish patty with a dead fish
  • Customers then attempt to pass it off as a mistake to McDonald’s workers

A ‘disgusting’ new trend has emerged where young Australians are mocking McDonald’s staff and uploading videos of their encounters to TikTok.

A tradie named Dylan posted a video of himself replacing the processed Filet-O-Fish hoki patty with a dead fish – before attempting to pass it off to McDonald’s staff as their mistake.

The female worker dismisses the attempt, saying she was aware of the viral trend.

‘Yeah, real funny guys. I’ve seen it on TikTok, not tonight,’ she replies.

The clip shows the young man standing in a high-vis vest outside a McDonald’s restaurant, opening the burger to reveal the dead fish inside.

Dylan then walks inside the chain and up to a staff member where he claims to have a complaint.

He again opens the burger for her, before she immediately recognizes what he’s doing.

‘That’s funny guys, it didn’t come from here,’ she says.

‘It’s real funny, not tonight, we’re busy.’

Australians weren’t impressed with Dylan’s attempted joke and stood up for the hospitality worker.

‘Grow up mate, that’s not funny,’ a man replied.

In a response to Daily Mail Australia, a spokeswoman from McDonald’s said: ‘We can assure our customers, our Filet-O-Fish comes scaled, cooked and delicious.’

Australians slammed for showing no manners at McDonald’s

Australian fast food diners have been slammed for having no manners after leaving a city fast food restaurant littered in rubbish.

A customer waiting for their takeaway order filmed the dining area of the Melbourne city McDonald’s restaurant last month.

Garbage is piled up on the floor and tables – including food wrappers, half-eaten burgers, scattered fries and discarded drinks.

The mess didn’t seem to bother plenty of customers, who took a seat amid the rubbish to eat their food.

‘Melbourne Maccas is something else… They would have to fire me before I cleaned any of this up,’ the uploader wrote.

Aussies were shocked at the messy surroundings and questioned how people could brazenly throw their rubbish where other customers were eating.

‘Who would sit in that cesspit? I would be furious about the state of that,’ one person wrote.

‘How can people be so inconsiderate, just use the bin,’ another said.

‘And Melbourne is one of the top ten most livable cities in the world?’ a third said.

Some commenters tried to provide an explanation for why the restaurant would be that messy.

‘If this is near the clubs on a Friday or Saturday night it’s not that out of the ordinary,’ one person said.

‘The manager probably tolerates it for the amount of business they’re getting,’ added another.

‘If it’s after midnight the employees might be told to just leave it as it’s a health and safety issue,’ a third said.

Family lost in outback NSW drank from puddles to stay alive

A young family reported missing to police between Queensland and NSW on Monday have been found safe after two days of searching between three states.

Darian Aspinall, 27, her children Winter Bellamy, 2, and Koda Bellamy, 4, along with their grandmother Leah Gooding, 50, were traveling from the Noccundra Hotel in Queensland to a planned destination of Packsaddle in far west NSW on Sunday.

The children’s father Linny Bellamy told of his family’s actions to ensure they’d survive while stuck alone in the outback for two straight days.

He said they relied on roadside puddles for sustenance and used a mirror to attract the attention of a police search aircraft.

“I can’t believe they managed to stay as strong as they did,” Mr Bellamy said.

“They looked after each other and just tried to ration everything out.”

He said other than looking tired, his family seemed themselves.

The family had made plans to travel to Adelaide, where they were originally from, police were told.

But when the four never arrived at their planned location in NSW and were unable to be contacted, Barrier police were alerted and the investigation into their whereabouts began.

The family, who were traveling in a Hyundai Tucson, were found inside their vehicle, off track, about 4.15pm on Tuesday afternoon by helicopter.

The aircraft confirmed it was the missing family, and they were assessed by an on-board paramedic.

They were then flown to Tibooburra for further assessment and care.

“Could not feel more relief,” Mr Bellamy said in a Facebook post sharing the good news.

“My family has been found safe.”

Police officers involved extended their thanks to the community for their support and assistance.

He was described by police as “behaving suspiciously” on school grounds before leaving the area.

Parents revealed shocking details about the terrifying order to 7NEWS on Wednesday, saying they were told the female Year 4 student was dragged down a school corridor by a man she did not know.

They say the man walked onto the grounds, entered a classroom building and climbed the stairs to the second floor, where he grabbed the girl outside the toilets in front of her friends and teachers.

“(He) had dragged her halfway along (the corridor), which is about where my daughter’s classroom is, and … then he got scared, maybe she was screaming, and then he ran away,” one mum told 7NEWS.

“It’s really horrible to think they got that far in and no one had stopped them. It’s a long way to get into the school.”

A friend of the victim said the man had looked at the girl under a toilet stall door and took photos of her before she ran screaming, The Adelaide Advertiser reports.

“He came into the school building, he was looking at her, taking photos of her under the door when she was in the toilets,” Seva, 11, told the newspaper.

“She screamed, and then she ran out and the man started chasing her up the stairs.

“Everyone in my class is scared. I don’t really feel safe at the school anymore, because I’m afraid it might happen to me.”

The claims have left parents shaken, with another concerned mum telling 7NEWS “it’s madness”.

“I think it’s terrifying, I can’t believe it happened,” she said.

“What that child went through must have been devastating,” another said.

“(I felt) scared for the children, you want it to be a safe place when they come to school.”

Police were called to the school about 10am, but by the time they arrived no suspect could be found.

The man is described as being about 180cm tall, bald and was wearing a knee-length light blue shirt, black pants, a black face mask and was carrying a beanie.

Parents claim they were left in the dark about the terrifying order.

“I heard nothing, they just said there was an incident and that was it,” one told 7NEWS.

A letter was sent to parents stating police were investigating an incident on school grounds but made no mention of an abduction attempt.

The school principal declined an interview request by 7NEWS, but said the student involved and her family have been offered support.

Government spokesman Tom Koutsantonis said the claims were “terrifying”.

“We will make sure police have all the resources they need to investigate and get to the bottom of this,” he said on Wednesday.

Anyone who may have seen a man matching the description, or has dashcam footage near the Diagonal Road school, is urged to contact police.

The North Coast Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care has since warned residents to “use caution” when walking pets around the areas of Buddina, Minyama, Point Cartwright and La Balsa, which are part of one continuous coastline.

“We, unfortunately, have had a series of patients presenting with alike symptoms that may suggest a toxicity by ingestion,” it said.

“Although we are unable to confirm the cause of these presentations, the link to these patients is the area that they have walked within the 12 hours prior.”

Symptoms include gastrointestinal upsets, breathlessness, lethargy, or any change in the behavior of your pet.

‘Absolutely heartbroken’

One man claimed his six-month-old puppy fell ill after visiting Kawana Beach on Wednesday. On Saturday, she was put down.

“This doesn’t seem like a coincidence, so I’d recommend steering clear for now. Please share around, as I don’t want any other beloved pets to die or anyone else to go through what I have,” he said.

“Absolutely heartbroken.”

Buderim dog day-care centre, Doggie Adventure Playhouse, also shared that one of its dogs, Billy, appeared to have been a victim of poisoning after visiting Buddina on Sunday. He died on Monday morning.

“Our loving thoughts and cuddles go out to Billy’s beautiful and heartbroken parents,” it said.

Silver Lining Pet Rescue Inc said one of her dogs, Sophie, also died over the weekend while on an adoption trial.

“Both Sophie’s now owner and foster mum are devastated at her passing. Please take care until the cause is known, ”she said.

Some locals had expressed concern online that communal drinking bowls might have been contaminated.

Queensland Police told 7NEWS.com.au that it had been “made aware of several instances of alleged dog poisoning in the Sunshine Coast area and are looking into the matter”.

“Anyone with information is being urged to contact police.”

While the exact cause of the poisonings is unclear, a Sunshine Coast Council spokesperson confirmed it was assisting the Queensland Police Service and RSPCA Queensland in the investigation.

“In the meantime, the Council has taken precautionary measures to reduce the risk of animals drinking possibly contaminated water by emptying and sanitizing all dog water bowls in the area,” she said.

“We are also working to remove any loose water bowls and seal any fixed bowls to prevent access.”

The council also encouraged pet owners to keep their dogs in sight at all times while in off-leash areas, ensure their dog is responsive to voice commands before letting them off-leash and contact their vet at the first sign of any symptoms.

Brett O’Dea case: New trial over Perth ‘vigilante’ bashing of Alimamy Koroma

A Perth man who severely bashed an African migrant in a misguided vigilante attack has had his conviction overturned by the High Court and will face a retrial.

Brett Christopher O’Dea, 46, was found guilty by a jury of committing grievous bodily harm with intent to Alimamy Koroma, a 35-year-old migrant from Sierra Leone, in the driveway of a Manning home in January 2018.

Mr Koroma had been chasing a young woman who had attempted to steal from the bowling club where he worked as a cleaner when he was attacked by O’Dea and another man, Jacob Jefferson Webb.

O’Dea testified he had heard the woman screaming she had been raped and ran out to protect her, responding in a manner he felt was appropriate at the time.

He attacked Mr Koroma with a weapon similar to a hockey stick, kicked him in the face and punched him in the head at least 10 times while he was on the ground.

The father-of-one suffered a traumatic brain injury and a fractured skull. He was forced to move into a rehabilitation facility after suffering cognitive impairments that left him unable to work or drive.

O’Dea’s trial in the District Court of Western Australia was told Mr Koroma’s brain injury was more likely to have been caused by O’Dea than Webb. It was also possible it was caused by a combination of their acts, prosecutors said.

A father-of-one suffered a traumatic brain injury and a fractured skull. He was forced to move into a rehabilitation facility after suffering cognitive impairments that left him unable to work or drive.

O’Dea was found guilty in 2019 and sentenced to a minimum of four years and three months in prison.

The jury was unable to reach a verdict for Webb, who later faced a retrial and was convicted of the alternative charge of unlawfully doing grievous bodily harm.

O’Dea’s conviction was upheld last year by WA’s Court of Appeal.

But Australia’s highest court on Wednesday ruled O’Dea had suffered a miscarriage of justice because the trial judge had erred in his instructions to the jury.

A majority of High Court judges found the instructions, based upon the “broadest” interpretation of the relevant legislation, left it open to the jury to attribute acts to O’Dea that Webb may have been carried out.

“That direction was an error of law amounting to a miscarriage of justice,” Justices Michelle Gordon, James Edelman and Simon Steward said.

The jury needed to be satisfied beyond reasonable doubt that O’Dea’s acts, in isolation, were sufficient to have caused the brain injury and were not undertaken in self-defence or because of an honest or reasonable mistake, they said.

In dissenting remarks, Chief Justice Susan Kiefel and Justice Stephen Gageler found the jury had been entitled to convict O’Dea.

The court ordered his conviction be set aside and a new trial held.

Mark McGowan in security scare after University of WA student targets him over abortion at press conference

A University of Western Australia student gate crashed a press conference being held by Premier Mark McGowan and had to be ushered away by his security team as she demanded to know whether abortion would be made free across the State.

The female student approached Mr McGowan as he was preparing to answer questions from reporters after announcing a contract had been awarded for the installation of 98 electric vehicle chargers as part of WA’s electric highway.

“I’m a student here at UWA and I just wanted to know if you were planning to make abortion free in WA,” the young woman said as she walked towards Mr McGowan.

The Premier’s minders immediately jumped into action, getting between the woman and Mr McGowan and attempting to move her away from the gathered media.

She asked one of Mr McGowan’s male bodyguards why he had placed his hands on her but seemed to accept the explanation when told he was part of the Premier’s personal security team.

“I just, I don’t understand why Mr McGowan can’t just answer my question,” she shouted as she was moved away.

“I’m just a student at UWA and I want to know if abortion will be made free?”

Mr McGowan remained silent throughout the encounter, but later addressed the protester’s question — after she had been moved well away from the site of the press conference — when it was repeated by the media.

“We’re reviewing the law in relation to abortion reform as to whether or not further reforms need to be put in place to make it nationally consistent with other states,” the Premier said.

“You may not know but I was in the Parliament when abortion was made legal in Western Australia. I’m one of the few members still left from that period and I voted in favor of it.”

Health Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson in June revealed work was underway to modernize WA’s abortion laws, which have been described as among the most oppressive in Australia.

“Cost is an issue and… women do fly interstate to access abortions past actually about 15 weeks. There are only two private providers and often their hours are limited,” she said.

Abortions cost vary from state to state and can run into hundreds of dollars depending on the medications or surgical procedures required.

In WA, women who seek an abortion after 20 weeks must have their request reviewed by an “ethics panel” consisting of six medical practitioners, two of whom must agree the mother or fetus has a severe medical condition that justifies the procedure.’

Mr McGowan said he understood the review of WA’s abortion regime would be completed by the end of the year.

“It’s obviously come into more focus recently with the Supreme Court decision in America and we’re looking at what we need to do to make it more nationally consistent and if there are anomalies that make it difficult for women in certain circumstances,” he said .

“They’re the sorts of things we’re looking at changing and repairing.”

Freak beach accident leaves Florida man Sean Nagel dead

A Florida man died after getting buried alive by a sand dune that collapsed while he was enjoying the sunrise, authorities said.

The freak accident happened early Sunday morning at Rock Beach on Hutchinson Island — where a passerby spotted a pair of human legs sticking out from the sand and called for help, the Martin County Sheriff’s Office said.

The grim discovery was made just south of the House of Refuge Museum at around 9 am

Sean Nagel, 37, has died in a suspected accident when a beach dune under which he was recording a sunrise on a Florida beach collapsed on top of him on Sunday.

Officials have determined that the man in the sand, who has been identified as 37-year-old Sean Nagel, from Stuart, “died hours earlier from asphyxia as a result of being trapped in the sand.”

Sheriff William Snyder confirmed to WPTV that when first responders dug up Nagel, sand was discovered in his lungs.

The release from the sheriff’s office stated that detectives believe Nagel was laying underneath a sand dune with his feet up while recording video of a sunrise between 5 and 6 am when the dune collapsed, trapping him. They do not suspect foul play.

A GoPro camera and a plastic bag were found next to Nagel’s body in the sand, reported TCPalm.com.

The sheriff’s office added that investigators were awaiting the results of toxicology tests, as per standard procedure, but it noted the results were “not likely to change the outcome of this incident being a tragic accident.”

Nagel’s older brother confirmed his death resuming from an accidental dune collapse in a Facebook post on Monday.

“I am grief-stricken and still in disbelief to tell you all that my younger brother Sean Alexander Nagel is no longer with us on this earth,” Will Nagel wrote. “Please remember to enjoy your life and don’t take a single second for granted.”

Sean Nagel’s old Facebook posts suggest that he is survived by a young son.

In May, an 18-year-old was killed when a sand hole he was digging at a New Jersey beach suddenly collapsed.

Meg Lanning takes indefinite break from cricket for personal reasons

Australia captain Meg Lanning will take an indefinite break from the game for personal reasons.

It means Lanning, who recently led Australia to the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games to follow their T20 and ODI World Cup titles in 2020 and 2022, will miss the Hundred where she would have played for Trent Rockets. Australia’s domestic season starts in late September with the WNCL ahead of the WBBL in October.

Australia’s next series is an away T20I tour of India in mid-December ahead of hosting Pakistan next January before the T20 World Cup in South Africa.

“After a busy couple of years, I’ve made the decision to take a step back to enable me to spend time focusing on myself,” Lanning said in a statement. “I’m grateful for the support of CA and my team-mates and ask that my privacy is respected during this time.”

Cricket Australia’s head of performance, women’s cricket, Shawn Flegler said: “We’re proud of Meg for acknowledging that she needs a break and will continue to support her during this time.

“She’s been an incredible contributor to Australian cricket over the last decade, achieving remarkable feats both individually and as part of the team, and has been a brilliant role model for young kids.

“The welfare of our players is always our number one priority, and we’ll continue to work with Meg to ensure she gets the support and space she needs.”

Melbourne Stars general manager Blair Crouch said: “We’re fully supportive of Meg’s desire to have a break from cricket and we will give her all the time, support and space she needs.”

Lanning made her international debut in 2010 and was named captain as a 21-year-old in 2014. She has led the team in 171 matches across all formats with 135 victories. Since 2017 she has only missed five internationals.
