Google Posts Yet Another Plea for Apple to Support RCS Messaging in iMessage

Google is making yet another attempt to persuade Apple to support the RCS phone-messaging standard in its own iMessage service, but this time it’s aiming the sales pitch at iPhone users.

At a “Get the Message” site posted Tuesday, Google calls out the least-common-denominator aspect of texts between iPhone and Android users: Everybody loses such features as encryption, typing indicators, and read receipts supported separately by Apple’s iMessage and the Google -backed Rich Communications Services (RCS), also called “chat features” in Android.

“Apple creates these problems when we text each other from iPhones and Android phones, but does nothing to fix it,” the page declares. “Apple turns texts between iPhone and Android into SMS and MMS, out-of-date technologies from the 90s and 00s.”

Subsequent paragraphs emphasize how iPhone users don’t only suffer the indignity of seeing Android-using friends’ messages in green bubbles but also miss features they enjoy in conversations with other iPhone users. For example: “Without read receipts and typing indicators, you can’t know if your Android friends got your text and are responding.”

Privacy also loses out in cross-platform conversations, the page notes: “SMS and MMS don’t support end-to-end encryption, which means those messages are not secure.”

(But while RCS supports end-to-end encryption in one-to-one Android chats, group Android chats today only get encryption in transit, with “e2e” security advertised as coming later this year. Bringing this same security to chats between different apps and different platforms would be much harder.)

Apple has never shipped an iMessage client for Android, and court documents unearthed during Fortnite’s lawsuit against Apple revealed that the Cupertino, Calif., company rejected an iMessage port because it might weaken iMessage’s customer lock-in effect.

Google has instead tried in vain to get Apple to add RCS support to iMessage–most recently, at its I/O developer conference in May. But while this latest sales pitch may win over some iPhone users, Apple has a history of ignoring requests from users that don’t square with its own product vision.

Google, meanwhile, has struggled to get RCS going in Android. It didn’t get all three major carriers lined up to ship its own Messages app until 2021, leaving an enormous installed base of Android phones running carrier- or manufacturer-specific messaging apps that don’t speak RCS. And Google still hasn’t persuaded Google to add RCS support to its own Google Voice calling and messaging service.

Finally, Google has yet to provide third-party developers with the coding framework they’d need to add RCS support to such SMS-capable apps as Signal and WhatsApp–the two services Google’s new page endorses as alternatives for iPhone users anxious to avoid today’s “broken experience” of cross-platform communication.

Developer posts in a thread on Signal’s site blame that on Google not providing the right API, and Google has yet to say when it might ship that framework.

iOS 16 Beta Tips Return of Battery Percentage Icon

There’s a lot to look forward to with Apple’s upcoming iOS 16 launch—chief among them the potential return of the battery percentage icon.

Released this week to developers for testing, iOS 16 beta 5 includes a small but impactful feature that displays your device’s remaining battery in numerical form (not just a decreasing bar), MacRumors reports. It previously appeared to the left of the battery icon, but Apple removed it from certain screens in 2017 with the introduction of iPhone X and its space-consuming notch.

Assuming the function makes it through to the final operating system rollout, this will be a welcome change for many iDevice owners, who currently have to swipe down to the Control Center or use the battery widget for a precise measurement of remaining juice levels.

Those enrolled in the developer beta can toggle on or off the indicator via Settings > Battery > Battery Percentage. The icon, as described by Engadget, appears slightly larger than what most people are used to, but otherwise remains the same. It still turns green and displays a lightning bolt while charging and appears yellow when in low power mode.

Not everything Apple tests in beta becomes part of the final release, but we should find out about the battery indicator soon enough. Apple typically releases the final version of iOS each year in mid-September, though you can check it out now via the iOS 16 public beta. Additional features coming to Apple’s mobile OS include Lock Screen customization, Live Text improvements, security enhancements, and the ability to turn your phone into a webcam.

AI asked to create an image of what death looks like

An artificial intelligence has been asked to create an image of what death looks like, and the results are simply stunning.

The artificial intelligence (AI) that was asked to create the images seen in the above video is called MidJourney, which was created by David Holtz, co-founder of Leap Motion, and is currently run by a small self-funded team that has several well-known advisors such as Jim Keller, known for his work at AMD, Apple, Tesla, and Intel, Nat Friedman, the CEO of Github, and Bill Warner, the founder of Avid Technology and inventor of nonlinear video editing.

MidJourney is an incredible piece of technology, and it recently went into open beta, which means anyone can try it by simply heading over to its dedicated Discord server. Users can enter “/imagine“, followed by a text prompt of what they want the AI to produce. Users have been testing the AI’s capabilities by entering descriptive words such as HD, hyper-realistic, 4K, wallpaper, and more. All of which work perfectly.

As for the predictive capability of MidJourney, none of the images seen in this article or any other source should be taken as a prediction. MidJourney was created to expand the human species’ imaginative power, not predictions.

Using MidJourney’s image generation algorithms, users are able to create ultra-realistic images of whatever they wish. The possibilities are truly endless, and with accurate text inputs, you can create wallpaper-worthy images. I tested the AI and created several images that are now being used as wallpapers, but what was more impressive was what the other users in the Discord were making. Below are some examples of what I found and what the user inputted into the AI to get the result.

How to Lock Down Your iPhone From Abusive Partners

Granting family members the ability to see your location and personal information on your iPhone can be helpful under normal circumstances. But if you feel threatened by a partner or other family member who has become abusive or violent, you can take action with Safety Check.

Introduced in iOS 16, this new feature allows you to sign out of iCloud on all your devices, revoke the access you have given to others, limit messaging to just one device, and stop sharing location data. The new mobile OS should launch in mid-September, but you can check it out early by downloading the iOS 16 beta.

Set Up Safety Check

Review Personal Safety Guide

You can set up Safety Check under Settings > Privacy & Security > Safety Check on your iPhone. Tap the learn more link to read Apple’s Personal Safety User Guide, which outlines how to protect yourself and your sensitive data if you do feel threatened by someone else.

At any time during this process, you can tap the QuickExit link at the upper right. This will immediately take you back to the Home screen, if you don’t want anyone to see what you are doing.

Start Emergency Reset

Tap the EmergencyReset button, then confirm the action through Face ID, Touch ID, or PIN. This will stop location sharing and revoke access to all apps. You will also be able to change your Apple ID password, review your security settings, and add or remove emergency contacts. Tap the Start Emergency Reset button to continue.

reset access

To revoke shared information with other people and apps, tap Reset People & Apps to start the process. Anyone you cut off from sharing won’t be notified of your action, but they may notice that the shared information is no longer visible to them. To revoke access for everyone and all apps, tap Reset. To revoke access for only certain people and apps, tap Manage Sharing & Access.

Remove or add trusted phone number

If you opted to reset the access for everyone and all apps, the next screen displays your trusted phone numbers. Tap the minus () button to remove a number you no longer trust. Tap Add a Trusted Phone Number to add a number. That number will then receive a text message with a verification code that you must enter on your current phone. Tap Continue.

update password

You are then asked to update your Apple ID password. You can tap Update Later in Settings if you wish to skip this step for now. Otherwise, tap the UpdatePassword button. Type and retype your new password, then tap the UpdatePassword button.

Remove or add emergency contact

You can then manage your emergency contacts. Tap the minus () button next to an existing emergency contact to remove that person, or tap Add emergency contact to add a different person. Tap Continue. You will then be told that the Safety Check is Complete. Tap donate.

Manage Access Manually

Manage sharing and access

Instead of going through the entire Safety Check process, you can choose to manually remove access to specific people and apps. To do this at the Safety Check screen, tap Manage Sharing & Access instead of Emergency Reset. You will then be able to review the people, apps, and devices that have access to certain information. Tap Continue.

Manage people and information

From the Sharing with People screen, you can see which contacts have access to your information and which services are being shared with your contacts. Under the People tab, you can select the people with whom you no longer wish to share your data. Under the Information tab, select the type of data you no longer want to share with others.

Tap the ReviewSharing button to make any further changes, then tap Continue. The next screen displays the apps able to access certain data. Review the list of apps and select any you wish to remove. Tap the Yo icon to see all the bits of information a specific app is able to access. You can then select any specific types of data to remove.

Manage apps

Tap the Information tab and select any pieces of information or features you no longer wish to share with apps, such as your location, camera, microphone, or media library. Tap the Yo icon to see all the apps with access to the selected data or feature and remove any from the list. When done, tap Stop App Accessthen tap Continue.

Remove selected devices

The next screen displays any devices currently signed in with your Apple ID. Select any that you wish to remove from your account. Then tap Remove Selected Devices.

update password

You can then tap UpdatePassword to change your Apple ID password. Tap Update Later in Settings to skip this step for now. Next, remove any existing emergency contact and add a new one if you wish. Tap Continue.

update passcode

The next screen lets you update your device’s passcode. To proceed, enter your existing passcode and then type a new one. You can also tap skip if you don’t want to change your passcode.

Reset FaceID

If you have previously set up an alternate or second appearance on a Face ID-enabled iPhone, you’re next given the chance to reset Face ID and remove that second appearance. To do this, tap Reset FaceID and follow the steps to scan your face.

Review other actions

The last screen tells you that the Safety Check is complete but describes other settings and features that may be sharing data or access with other people. Review the suggestions on this screen and take any further action that you may feel is warranted to protect your location, your privacy, and yourself.

Experimental Earbuds Can Detect Ear Infections With a Chirp

A picture of the galaxy buds pro worn in ear

photo: Gizmodo

Do you remember how your parents tried to convince you to eat your vegetables as a kid by promising they were good for your health? That’s the same tactic a lot of wearable makers are using today, by adding health-tracking features to devices like smartwatches. Now, researchers have developed a way for earbuds to track your ear health, too.

Every time Apple holds an event, it spends a few minutes touting the health benefits of wearing an Apple Watch, which has heart rate tracking features that can potentially identify heart problems before they become a serious complication. Yot’s also rumored that the long overdue update to Apple’s AirPods Pro wireless earbuds will potentially include body temperature measuringallowing the devices to detect a fever: an early symptom of countless other conditions.

It turns out the inherent capabilities of earbuds—namely blasting sound into your ears—also allows them to potentially detect conditions that can afflict the inner ear and the ear canal, as researchers from the University of Buffalo have found with an experimental device they’ve called EarHealth.

A diagram of the EarHealth system

What’s most interesting about EarHealth is that it relies on earbuds that more or less feature off-the-shelf hardware, although with an upgraded microphone inside designed to pick up sounds in the ear, not around the wearer. Based on shared images of the prototype, the EarHealth doesn’t even appear to rely on wireless earbuds, although an official release on the research on the University of Buffalo website does specifically mention the use of Bluetooth earbuds—which is good, because none of us want to go back to wires.

whereas the Apple Watch uses optical detection tricks to monitor heart health, the EarHealth uses sound instead. The earbuds emit a quick chirp which reverberates through the ear canal, producing unique sounds and echoes which are captured by the microphone. The captured sounds are then processed by a custom app on a connected smartphone that relies on a deep learning algorithm to generate a profile of the user’s inner ear geometry.

The first chirp is done while the user is healthy to generate a baseline profile of their inner ear, while later chirps, which can be regularly scheduled, generate profiles that are compared against the original to spot differences. estos can be used to diagnose one of three different conditions: earwax blockage, ruptured ear drums, and otitis media, which is a common infection or inflammation of the middle ear caused by colds or sore throats.

In tests done with 92 users that included 27 healthy subjects, 22 with ruptured eardrums, 25 with a confirmed case of otitis media, and 18 with earwax causing a blockage, the EarHealth had a diagnosis accuracy of 82.6%, but that can potentially be improved as the researchers refine both the hardware and the sample base of users. The benefit to using AI-powered algorithms is that they will continue to improve and become more accurate at making diagnoses over time as more sample data is made available.

New iOS App Blocks Those Annoying ‘Open in App’ Pop-Ups in Safari

You’ve probably experienced visiting a website like Reddit or LinkedIn on your iPhone only to be greeted with an annoying, almost full-screen pop-up urging you to view the content in their app instead of on the website.

banish safari app pop ups
It’s a common practice for websites that have accompanying iOS apps to push users to open (if they already have the app installed) or download their app from the App Store to view the content they’re trying to view. It can be very annoying for end-users, though, as these pop-ups are usually rather intrusive to the actual content, creating a subpar experience.

Thankfully, there is a new way to block these pop-ups within Safari on ‌iPhone‌ and iPad. Developer Alex Zamoshchin has created a new Safari extension called “Banish” (via daring fireball) that can run on iOS and iPadOS and is designed to specifically get rid of those pop-ups. The app, which costs $2, helps eliminate a majority of those pop-ups in popular web versions of apps, but it doesn’t get rid of similar banners that show up at the top of Safari to recommend opening the current page in an installed app.

The banner at the top of Safari is built into Safari and WebKit itself, so to get rid of those, you’ll have to uninstall the respective app from your device. Banish, instead, gets rid of pop-ups implemented in the websites themselves.

To use Banish, download it from the App Store and follow the on-screen instructions to give the app the needed permission within Settings, Safari, and Extensions. You can learn more about Banish here.

The redesigned Eve Aqua has improved mechanics and a new look to help HomeKit owners keep their gardens well-watered.

Following the release of the all-new Eve Motion, smart home accessory maker Eve Systems is out with its latest product. It has redesigned the Eve Aqua, with a refreshed design and durability improvements.

“Eve Aqua looks gorgeous and makes smart gardening easy, safe and joyful,” says Jerome Gackel, CEO, Eve Systems. “Thread eliminates the need for a digital bridge, while the brass faucet adapter ensures a rock-solid physical connection. And of course, our beautiful Eve app brings it all together, making scheduling, and monitoring consumption, a breeze.”

The new Eve Aqua has an IPX4 resistance rating and runs on a pair of AA batteries. It has a sleek new space gray body with a matte black front. The physical watering button has increased in size to make it easier to control.

It requires no bridge outside of your existing Home Hub and supports up to seven watering sessions per day.

On the inside, Eve has upgraded it to a brass faucet connector and magnetic valve that provides increased durability, helps prevents leaks, and is near-silent when opening or closing.

Like the second-generation Eve Aqua, the new model is able to connect via Bluetooth as well as Thread. This marks the 14th product Eve has released with support for Thread.

When Matter is released this fall, Eve Aqua (third-generation) will be updated for free to support the new standard and be compatible with other smart home platforms.

Linus Torvalds uses M2 MacBook Air to release Linux 5.19

AppleInsider is supported by its audience and may earn commission as an Amazon Associate and affiliate partner on qualifying purchases. These affiliate partnerships do not influence our editorial content.

The latest release of Linux 5.19 has more of an Apple angle than usual, with Linus Torvalds releasing it using an M2 MacBook Air running a version of Linux ported to Apple Silicon.

Linux, like other operating systems, receives updates periodically, with the open source software being no exception. Linus Torvalds, the driving force behind Linux, recently released version 5.19 of the operating system, enabling maintainers of the different Linux variants to incorporate the changes.

spotted by AsahiLinux, Torvalds has passed comment about the use of Apple products in an email to the Linux Kernel Mailing List. Posted on Sunday, Torvalds writes “the most interesting part here is that I did the release (and am writing this) on an arm64 laptop,” referring to the use of Apple Silicon.

Torvalds doesn’t specifically name the model of Mac he is using. But, Asahi Linux claims it is an M2 MacBook Air running its port.

“It’s something I’ve been waiting for for a long time [sic] time, and it’s finally reality, thanks to the Asahi team,” Torvalds continues. In July, the Asahi Linux for Mac project released an update that added Mac Studio support as well as experimental M2 support and fixing Bluetooth.

Torvalds mentions that there has been arm64 hardware running Linux for a while, but that “none of it has really been usable as a development platform until now.”

This marks the third time Torvalds has used Apple hardware for Linux development. He previously did so “for powerpc development on a ppc970 machine,” then over a decade ago with the MacBook Air as it was “the only real thin-and-lite around.”

He admits its usage has been limited, as it hasn’t been used “for any real work” so far. It has been used for “doing test builds and boots and now the actual release tagging.”

Torvalds anticipates using it while traveling “and finally dog-fooding the arm64 side too.”
