NRL 2022: Lara Pitt reveals 'hardest part' of her job, Round 22 preview, premiership dark horse, Sharks, Dragons

The race for the NRL finals is heating up and this weekend will see several tantalizing match-ups that are certain to shape the make-up of the top eight.

The Panthers face the Storm tonight, before Parramatta take on South Sydney on Friday night and the Roosters play the Cowboys on Saturday afternoon.

“I think the top four battle is heating up for sure,” Fox League’s Lara Pitt told news.com.au ahead of round 22.

“I think the Storm have probably got a tough one to win against the Panthers even though Penrith don’t have (Nathan) Cleary and (Jarome) Luai — they’re always extremely tough to beat at home.

“The Eels-Rabbitohs game is one of the hardest of the round, equally Roosters-Cowboys. Those two games are massive. I found those the hardest to pick but I’ve gone with the Roosters and Parramatta.

“The Parramatta Eels, that’s a huge game against the Rabbitohs, if they win that they’re into the top four.

The Panthers sit three games clear on top of the ladder and are red-hot favorites to win back-to-back premierships, but Pitt believes Cronulla are a “dark horse” heading into finals.

“I’ve been at the last couple of Sharks games on the sideline and been really impressed with how gritty and the style of football they’re playing,” she said.

“They can get into an arm wrestle. They still haven’t hit peak form, there’s still improvement to come for them.

“They’re winning ugly, they’re winning tough, then when they play well they can score points. I’d say the Sharks are possibly the dark horse.

“I think the eight is pretty much settled when I look at the standings at the teams that have kind of fallen over at the wrong end of the season — Manly, Raiders and Dragons unfortunately have left it a bit too late.

“I think the eight is probably the way it is now but everyone will be jostling for where they actually finish in the eight. I back the Roosters and the Broncos to secure their place in finals, it’s just about how high they can finish.”

Gruesome injuries ‘hardest part’ of the job

In her role as Fox League’s sideline reporter, Pitt has witnessed several nasty injuries this season including Stephen Crichton’s mauled ear, Ryan Papenhuyzen suffering a fractured knee cap and Aaron Booth rupturing his ACL last weekend.

Pitt said having to interview players after they’ve suffered season-ending injuries is the “hardest part” of her job.

“The Stephen Crichton one stands out the most,” she said.

“I think even he probably was in shock himself and didn’t realize his ear was hanging off walking around the stadium saying g’day to the fans at the end of the game, then had to head off to hospital and have a plastic surgeon sew his ear together.

“There’s been that one and obviously seeing Aaron Booth go down for the Titans last week, he has sustained the most serious knee injury you can get.

“I spoke to him after the game. He knows he’s got a long road to recovery but I was pretty surprised at how strong he was and how he looked like he was going to take it head on, which is pretty incredible when he’s just sustained a horrific knee injury.

“It’s probably not the best part of the job at all and speaking to players just after they’ve ruined their year or they’ve got that long comeback trail ahead of them, that’s probably the hardest part.

“I don’t like watching the replays of horrendous injuries, that’s for sure. I’ll certainly look away. I’m not too frightened by the blood and the gore of it, but I’m not watching the replays of knees going the wrong way, that’s for sure.”

Dragons need star power around Hunt

St George Illawarra take on the Raiders in a Fox League exclusive game on Sunday and while both sides appear out of the finals race, they will be desperate for a win.

Pitt believes the Dragons need to recruit some star players in the spine to support Ben Hunt, if they are any chance to make finals in 2023.

“The club has made some moves to change the support staff around Anthony Griffin. Clearly they can see it’s not working,” she said.

“The concern is now that they’re not bringing on board any high caliber players into the roster to help Ben Hunt and he desperately needs the help. It’s hard to see how they’ll be any better next year with just some assistant coaching movements.

“If that’s the case, then the pressure will be firmly on the club and the coach early next year if they don’t make any movement in performance on the field.

“Overall, just hugely disappointing that they haven’t improved this year and they’ve failed to make finals.”

Sharks star Nicho Hynes has vowed to dedicate the rest of his season to his “best mate” Aaron Booth after suffering a gross knee injury against the Storm.

The 26-year-old’s knee buckled in thick scenes, collapsing underneath his weight in right angles while attempting to tackle Storm playmaker Cooper Johns.

Titans coach Justin Holbrook was clearly emotional when speaking about Booth’s injury which will end his 2022 campaign.

“I feel for Boothy,” Holbrook said.

“He’s fought really hard to get his shot this year and it’s going to be really nasty for him unfortunately.

“It’s really bad for him.”

Speaking after his side’s big win over the Dragons, Hynes said Booth “pretty much saved my life.”

“I want to try and dedicate the rest of this year to him, he is my best mate and he pretty much saved my life,” Hynes said.

The pair’s bond began when they were teammates at the Mackay Cutters.

Then when both Booth and Hynes were contracted at the Storm they lived together — becoming close mates.

“He’s had a terrible run with injuries and it just breaks my heart to see,” Hynes said.

“He’s worked so hard to get back to where he is each time to play NRL and he unfortunately just has no luck with injuries.

“I love him to death and I can’t wait to see him.”

As it stands, the extent of Booth’s injury is currently unknown — with further scans set to reveal how long the playmaker will stay off the field.

CHELSEA BEAT CITY! (TO A SIGNING, AT LEAST)

Chelsea have signed Spanish defender Marc Cucurella from Premier League rivals Brighton on a six-year contract, the London club announced Friday.

No fee was disclosed but British media reports have valued the deal at £60 million – the equal-highest fee for a fullback.

The 24-year-old should now be available for Chelsea’s Premier League opener away to Everton on Saturday.

“I’m really happy; it’s a big opportunity for me to join one of the best clubs in the world and I’m going to work hard to be happy here and help the team,” Cucurella told Chelsea’s website.

The Spain wing-back has now become Chelsea’s latest pre-season signing with Kalidou Koulibaly, Raheem Sterling and Carney Chukwuemeka all having arrived at Stamford Bridge for a total spend of £172m.

Cucurella’s move has paved the way for young Chelsea centre-back Levi Colwill to head in the opposite direction, on loan, to Brighton.

Both Manchester City and Chelsea have been interested in Cucurella, although the Premier League champions are understood to have baulked at Brighton’s asking price.

But Chelsea, under new owner Todd Boehly’s consortium, remained interested.

“He’s young, hungry, mobile and a very intelligent player,” said Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel of Cucurella, with the German explaining the new recruit would take some of the pressure off Ben Chilwell during the England wing-back’s recovery from knee surgery.

“It helps in depth and in quality, and it helps with Ben, to escape the pressure of I have to deliver and we need you absolutely now,” Tuchel said.

“We have of course at the moment in this position Marcos Alonso, Kenedy and Emerson.

“And I think he (Cucurella) can play very well in the back three, so it’s a bit of a profile of Azpi (Azpilicueta) on the left side. He gives us many options.”

Boehly added: “Marc is an elite defender of proven Premier League quality and he further strengthens our squad going into the new season.

“We continue to work on and off the pitch, and we’re delighted Marc will be a part of the present and future at Chelsea.

ROONEY BAGS SIXTH SIGNING ALREADY

Belgian international striker Christian Benteke, who has spent the past 10 years in the Premier League, joined Wayne Rooney-coached DC United of Major League Soccer on Friday, the club announced.

United obtained the 31-year-old forward on a permanent transfer from Crystal Palace and signed him to a deal through the 2024 season with a club option for 2025.

“Christian is a top player who has played at the highest level for a long time,” former England and Manchester United star Rooney said.

“His experience and ability to score goals and help the team will be invaluable. It’s exciting for the team and myself to get him in and playing. He will make a huge difference.” United will need all the help it can get with a record of just six wins and three draws for 21 points, the second-worst in the 28-team North American league.

Benteke scored 86 goals in 280 Premier League appearances with Aston Villa, Liverpool, and Palace.

Benteke becomes the sixth player to join United since Rooney was named coach last month.

David Moyes has said West Ham will still be involved in the transfer market after signing Maxwel Cornet.

The Ivory Coast forward has joined the Hammers following Burnley’s relegation from the Premier League in a move worth a reported £17.5 million.

His arrival at the London Stadium ahead of the new season comes after Nayef Aguerd, Flynn Downes and Gianluca Scamacca joined the club, with goalkeeper Alphonse Areola signing a permanent deal following a loan spell.

However, defend Aguerd, who cost £30 million, is expected to be out for three months with a knee injury.

Having also lost the retired Mark Noble, and the released duo of Ryan Fredericks and Andriy Yarmolenko, from what was already a thin squad, West Ham manager Moyes is keen to sign more players.

“We’ve made good signings,” Moyes said Friday. “We’ve had one or two injuries as well, which we have to take into consideration, but we’re far from finished in that regard.

“We lost three outfield players and a goalkeeper this summer. We didn’t bring any players in during January so we need to fill these voids. We want to bring in quality players and we’re working to do that.”

Scamacca will help fill the void in West Ham’s ranks left by last year’s departure of striker Sebastien Haller.

But the £30 million signing from Sassuolo is short of match fitness and so not expected to feature in West Ham’s opener against champions Manchester City on Sunday.

SCHMEICHEL DOES NICE DEAL

Danish goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel said Friday he has “high ambitions” to replicate his success with Leicester City at new club Nice.

The 35-year-old was the mainstay of the most successful period in the English club’s history winning the Premier League, FA Cup and Community Shield in his 11-year spell.

“In football, if you have a feeling, you have to go with it,” said the former Leicester captain, who wants to turn the Riviera outfit back into the “top club” who won four Ligue 1 titles, the last in 1959.

“Leicester is a club that I love. The decision to leave family members is difficult,” Schmeichel told a press conference.

“But I am 35 years old. It was time to challenge myself, with the desire to continue to grow as a player and person — a new language, a new experience for my family.

“But the main reason was the fact that Ineos (owners) have very high ambitions for Nice. They want to make it a top club. I see similarities there with when I joined Leicester.” The son of former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel joined Leicester from Leeds in 2011 and soon became a fans’ favorite with his 479 appearances the third most in the club’s history.

Nice finished fifth in Ligue 1 last season and open their new campaign at Toulouse on Sunday.

Cameron Munster has produced a breathtaking display as Melbourne Storm marked a history-making night with a 32-14 win over gutsy cellar-dweller Gold Coast Titans at AAMI Park on Friday night.

But the returning Brandon Smith will be facing a nervous wait after he was put on report for a hip drop tackle late in the first half.

With the Storm leading 16-4, Smith, who had been out for the last three matches after he was banned for referee Adam Gee a “cheating bastard”, landed himself in hot water when making a legs tackle on the Titans’ Tino Fa’ asuamaleaui.

But in a week where the hip drop has been a hot topic after the Broncos’ Patrick Carrigan was banned for four weeks after his tackle saw the Tigers’ Jackson Hastings break his leg.

Unlike a usual hip drop where two players hold a player before the third man attacks the legs, Smith was in motion, slipping off the tackle and onto Fa’asuamaleaui leg.

But referee Peter Gough said: ““I understand it’s wet and he’s sliding, but what it is, is he throws his legs out which drops the weight on the backfoot.”

Premiership winning coach turned Fox Sports commentator Shane Flanagan wasn’t thrilled with the tackle.

“You can’t do it. You know you can’t put your weight on the back of the legs when a player is going away from you, and he gets himself in a bad position,” Flanagan said.

Post match, Storm coach Craig Bellamy called for the judiciary to look at the incident on its own merits.

“I just hope it gets judged on the tackle, not some of the hysteria that has gone on this week,” Bellamy said.

“That is all we ask.

“If you go on one last week, but how many have there been? If there is one in however many games since the last one.

“Pat Carrigan doesn’t go out on the field to break Hastings’ legs, they are an accident.

“I don’t see it as a real big issue in the game, but I understand that it can injure people, but there hasn’t been a whole heap this year I don’t think.

“I just hope it gets judged on that and not on it being in the news a lot this week.”

It was otherwise a good night for the Storm as they celebrated Bromwich brothers, captain Jesse (290 games) and fellow forward Kenny (211), became the first pair of brothers in NRL history to combine for 500 games (501) with the one club .

Kenny produced a first half try to make it the perfect start to the night.

But it was a hat-trick hero Munster who kickstarted the Storm surges with two first-half tries before adding a third in the second half on a night of brilliance.

Returning to the full back position where he started his career, Munster was safe at the back, dazzled with the extra room to move to rack up 252 run meters and offered tremendous leadership with his voice.

Winger David Nofoaluma, loaned from the Wests Tigers, showed off his speed and elusiveness in an impressive first start with the Storm, while center Young Tonumaipea scored a try in his first game for the Storm since 2018.

Hooker Harry Grant and five-eighth Cooper Johns were also influential for the Storm.

The Storm made a barnstorming start with three tries in the opening 22 minutes.

Xavier Coates, returning from a long-term injury, scored one of the easier tries of his career after Grant flicked out a quick pass to find him unattended in the corner.

Munster rose into the night sky to catch, spin and make his way across the line, before Kenny Bromwich got his try burrowing under Titans defenders Phillip Sami and David Fifita.

It would be a horror night for the Titans after hooker Aaron Booth succumbed to a knee injury.

The 26-year-old had to be helped off the ground by the trainers against his former club after his leg collapsed while attempting to tackle Johns.

CARLTON has suffered some significant injury blows after the loss to Adelaide.

corey durdin is set to miss a week with a shoulder injury he suffered during the game, while George Hewett’s back issue will see him miss a second straight game, which this one being a crunch clash against Brisbane at the Gabba.

Nick Newman is set to miss the rest of the regular season after sustaining a shocking cut to his knee.

Newman was injured by his opponent’s footy boots which dragged across his leg as he attempted to lay a tackle.

RICHMOND admits it is “doubtful” star defender Dylan Grimes will play again in the home-and-away season after his latest hamstring injury.

Grimes suffered the injury in the second half of Sunday’s thrilling win over Brisbane, adding to a streak of soft tissue injuries for the 31-year-old.

Tigers fitness boss Peter Burge said on Tuesday that Grimes’ injury required “further investigation”.

“At this stage it’s probably looking doubtful that he’s going to play in the last three home and away games of the season.

“So, we’re going to need to have a look at what lies beyond that. We’ll gather some information over the next couple of days and we’ll give everyone an update.“

Meanwhile, Dustin Martin remains in a “holding pattern” with his hamstring injury.

The club says it’s “hopeful” a round 23 return is still on the cards, but admits, “if we’re not able to progress significantly in the next week or so, that starts to become a little less clear.”

The Lions Also Lost Zack Bailey in the first half of Sunday’s contest, with the mid-forward taken to hospital with a chest issue after a collision with Richmond’s Marlion Pickett.

Remarkably, despite Bailey spending Sunday night in hospital as his teammates returned home without him, the Lions are yet to rule him out of Round 21.

Scans cleared the 22-year-old of any serious injury and he was able to be discharged.

“Bailey spent the night in hospital in Melbourne after receiving a knock to his sternum in Sunday’s match with Richmond at the MCG,” the Lions said in a statement.

“Bailey was released from hospital on Monday and cleared to fly home to Brisbane.

“He will be further assessed to determine his availability for Sunday’s match against Carlton at the Gabba.”

COLLINGWOOD will be without star taylor adams for the remainder of the home and away season after he limped off in the win over Port Adelaide.

Coach Craig McRae confirmed Adams’ suffered a groin injury.

After scans, the club released a statement confirming the extent of the injury layoff.

“Collingwood vice-captain Taylor Adams will miss the remainder of the AFL home and away season after scans revealed a strain to his groin,” the statement read.

“The 28-year-old will be assessed further in the coming weeks.”

But there is good news for defending Jeremy Howeafter he suffered a heavy knock.

“Howey just got a knee in the backside and unfortunately just couldn’t function,” McRae said.

“He’ll be fine but he just couldn’t get back on the ground.”

Howe was able to complete a pool recovery session with teammates on Monday.

“He is expected to complete limited training on Tuesday before being assessed on Thursday,” the club said.

Brodie Grundy is no certainty to receive an AFL call up for Round 21, while Brody Mihocek is in a race to provide his fitness after missing Round 20 with a hip injury.

Grundy made his return in the VFL last weekend after 13 weeks on the sidelines with a PCL injury.

“Grundy played into the fourth term and collected the typical bumps and bruises sustained during a first game back,” the club said.

“He will also be assessed on Thursday.”

GEELONG are set to be without Gary Rohan for the clash with St Kilda after he was subbed out with a head knock.

Coach Chris Scott was unsure if Rohan was officially concussed, but said he was told Rohan “couldn’t go back on”.

“He said to me he’s perfectly fine, so that’s a good sign,” Scott said post-match.

“You never know how these guys are going to pull up.

“You know when it’s bad… but this isn’t one of those if appearances are anything to go by.”

HAWTHORN coach Sam Mitchell is counting the cost of the loss to St Kilda.

The Hawks gallantly fought back in the final term, despite being down to three on the bench.

mitch lewis injured his knee early in the contest but tried to run it out, Josh Morris suffered a shoulder injury while Jacob Koschitzke suffered a cork.

“We lost three today,” Mitchell said.

“Tank Morris, he was going really well. I was sad for him – he finally got his chance. He’s put together a really good month of footy.

“He popped his shoulder, it came back in but obviously wasn’t going to come back on the field.”

Mitchell said the club wasn’t going to risk Lewis even though he tried to play on with his knee injury.

“Mitch Lewis has had a little bit of a sore knee for a while and just landed on it awkwardly,” he explained.

“It wasn’t OK to keep going.

“It’s one of those injuries where there’s a small amount of risk to it… the game was put away so we weren’t going to risk an important player like him.”

Mitchell praised Koschitzke’s ability to play on despite being clearly hampered by injury.

“Kossie really worked hard. He has got a really nasty corky – he could hardly walk even to half time but we were already three on the bench so we needed him to soldier on,” he said.

“I have committed to that and gave us what I could. He couldn’t run or lead very much but he gave us a reply.

“Sometimes as a young player having to fight through when your body is nowhere near its best is an important lesson to learn.”

MELBOURNE coach Simon Goodwin says young ruckman Luke Jackson will be right to go against Collingwood after passing his concussion test in Perth.

Jackson came from the ground in the win over Fremantle appearing to be dazed but was given the all clear.

“He just had a little knock late in the game. He was checked by the docs and got the all clear,” Goodwin said.

“There’s nothing wrong with him, he’ll be fine. He’ll be ready to go next week.

“He got checked and passed his test.”

Goodwin also said Christian Salem would be able to back up after a blow to his face left him bleeding from the nose.

“Salem had a bit of a cut to his face, but we’ve come through unscathed,” Goodwin said.

james hames (concussion) and ben brown (knee soreness) will both need to provide their fitness to face the Pies on Friday night.

“Brown, following two weeks on the sidelines due to knee soreness, has ramped up his training program this past week and will also look to be available for selection,” the club said.

Joel Smith played his first VFL minutes since suffering a serious ankle injury back in Round 7.

the WESTERN BULLDOGS are sweating on star Adam Treloar‘s fitness ahead of this weekend’s must-win game against Fremantle.

Treloar has been battling a calf complaint and finished his past two matches early.

“Adam suffered some calf tightness in the game against Melbourne,” Dogs head of sports medicine Chris Bell said.

“He still wasn’t 100% during his fitness test last Thursday, so was unavailable for selection.

“We will again assess Adam as this week progresses and make a call on his availability towards the back end of the week.”

Anthony Scott (concussion) and hayden crozier (ankle) remain in the hunt for selection.

Scott was now “symptom-free” after being convicted in the clash with Sydney in Round 17, while Crozier has made steady progress since his ankle injury suffered in the VFL a month ago.

“We couldn’t be happier with how he has progressed over the last two weeks since coming out of the CAM boot,” Bell said.

“He will start to integrate back into training this week and we will determine if he returns to playing this weekend or next.”

Jarrod Brander‘s first season with GWS is over after the utility injured his hamstring playing the VFL.

Jacob Wehr is also unavailable for selection this weekend through injury.

Wehr suffered a calf strain against the Swans, ending his run of 10 straight game since debuting in Round 10.

Matt Flynn (ankle) and Conor Stone (hamstring) will have to provide themselves fit to face Essendon on Saturday.

In some good news for the club, Bobby Hill has been medically cleared to return after undergoing surgery for testicular cancer.

Hill hasn’t played since his shock diagnosis back in May.

PORT ADELAIDE are confident Travis Boak may back up against Richmond, despite fracturing his hand in the loss to Collingwood.

The 34-year-old was able to play out the match, after suffering the injury in the second term.

“He will be monitored throughout the week with an expectation that he will be able to take on the Tigers,” the club said in a statement.

Darcy Byrne-Jones will need to pass a fitness test after spraining his ankle early in the clash with the Pies.

The club expects Riley Bonner to be available for selection after he clears the AFL’s Health and Safety protocols, while dan houston could come into the mix after serving his 12-day concussion break.

FREMANTLE will be without skipper Nat Fyfe until at least Round 23 as he recovers from a hamstring injury.

Fyfe hasn’t played since the Round 19 draw with the Tigers and remains no guarantee to play before finals.

“We’ve got a target of round 23 for Nat, obviously there’s a bit of work to do before we get there but that’s our target,” Dockers footy boss Peter Bell said.

Sam Switkowski is another Docker pushing to return before finals, as he recovers from a serious back injury.

“Sam’s a really important player for us, so if he is to come back it will be really positive,” Bell said.

The club it was still to put a line through Jye Amiss despite the rookie’s kidney injury landing him in hospital.

“Jye is going pretty well, we’ll be in constant dialogue with the specialist,” Bell said.

“Every day he’s getting better, it’s great to have him back out there. We haven’t put a line through him for the season, that’s for sure, so he’s training well.”

Cleary will miss the rest of the regular season after he was sent off and banned for five matches for an ugly spear tackle on Parramatta’s Dylan Brown, while Luai continues to recover from a knee injury.

O’Sullivan has shown he can fill in for the rep stars when required, but it’s a huge call bringing in Salmon, given he hasn’t started a game at five-eighth since 2019 when he played seven games for the Eels in the No .6 jumper.

Coach Ivan Cleary could yet spring a late change with rookie Kurt Falls named in the reserves for Saturday’s trip to take on the resurgent Raiders.

In a boost for the Panthers, center Stephen Crichton returns from his sickening head clash with Cronulla’s Dale Finucane which required emergency plastic surgery to repair an ear.
