Essendon Bombers, Gold Coast Suns

Essendon captain Dyson Heppell doesn’t “owe” Essendon anything and the club wouldn’t begrudge him joining Gold Coast next season, according to Bombers coach Ben Rutten.

The Suns have reportedly tabled a four-year deal to the out-of-contract defender, comprising two years as a player and two as an assistant coach.

But Essendon have also offered Heppell a new contract, believed to be far inferior to the Suns’ deal, and Rutten said the Bombers weren’t putting a timeline on when they needed Heppell to make a decision on his future.

“He is really clear on where he stands with us and we’d love to have him around next year. He knows that,” Rutten said at Tullamarine on Wednesday.

“He’s been a great servant for our footy club, he doesn’t owe us anything, so we’ll be really supportive of Dyson and all of our players whatever decisions they make.”

While Rutten said there would be “something special” about seeing Heppell finish his career as a one-club player, he tempered that by saying it wasn’t “the be all and end all” in the modern era – a view backed up by the likes of Hawthorn premiership heroes Luke Hodge, Sam Mitchell and Jordan Lewis all finishing their glittering careers at other clubs.

Meanwhile, veteran defender Michael Hurley won’t play against Port Adelaide on Sunday evening despite continuing to make progress after overcoming a nasty hip infection that has sidelined him for the past two seasons.

He has now played four VFL games, and while he might be a chance to play Richmond in the final round, Rutten still couldn’t guarantee that or whether Hurley would be offered a new contract for next year.

“It’s something we are thinking through, the dynamics of that, there’s still some uncertainty around ‘Hurls’ moving forward,” Rutten said.

“We haven’t made a decision on what we’re doing there but there’s plenty of options for us.”

“All time Swans great” Emotional goodbye | 03:24

Rutten admitted the uncertainty surrounding Hurley’s playing future could affect his prospects of playing against the Tigers next week.

“There’s a fair bit to weigh up from our end, from Hurls’ end, which we’re talking through all the time,” Rutten said.

“He understands the rigors of AFL footy and the demands that you have to be up for.

“At the moment, he’s getting through a game and a half a training session – that’s not sustainable for him, or for anyone, to play a full season of footy.

“I think he’s still got the passion to play and the desire, (but) marrying that up with the physical part of it is the bit he and we are working through at the moment.”

One factor that might earn Hurley a new contract is Essendon being light on for experienced players.

Feet rebound from cap scandal | 02:10

There are only three players aged 30 or older at the Bombers this year – Hurley, Heppell and ruckman Andrew Phillips.

“They’re certainly the things that we’re considering, that’s all part of the bigger picture for us,” he said.

“It’s important that we best support our less experienced players through the early parts of their career.

“In his time out, he’s spent a lot of time with our younger key position players in particular, and he’s now loving playing with them and they’re loving playing with him.”

KEY DEES TRIO MEET WITH PIES STAR

Not only is Melbourne interested in Brodie Grundy, the club has met with the star ruckman, according to Sportsday reporter Sam McClure.

the Herald Sun reported on Tuesday night that the Demons, as well as Geelong, had emerged as “potential new suitors” for Grundy, who’s now central to ample trade speculation despite being contracted to the Pies until the end of 2027 on a deal reportedly worth around $1 million per season.

Giants football boss Jason McCartney was seen meeting Grundy’s manager last month, while Port Adelaide has also been linked to the dual All-Australian.

Speaking on 3AW’s sports day on Tuesday night, McClure said the Dees had been proactive and met with Grundy “in recent days”.

“Simon Goodwin was definitely there, Alan Richardson was definitely there and Max Gawn was definitely there,” McClure told 3AW.

“Clearly Melbourne are of the belief that Luke Jackson is going to Fremantle, so they are on the lookout early and are getting in early in the queue for a direct replacement.”

While Jackson appears increasingly likely to request a trade to Fremantle, the Demons are keen to continue with a two-ruck strategy — and pairing Gawn and Grundy would bring together two of the AFL’s premier ruckmen in the past decade.

Collingwood coach Craig McRae declared on Fox Footy’s AFL 360 last month he wanted Grundy at the club next season, but remained tight-lipped on whether he was up for trade.

Grundy, who hasn’t played an AFL game since Anzac Day due to a knee issue, had been nearing a return to the AFL before suffering a stress fracture in his ankle in a VFL match, ruling him out for the rest of the home and away season.

BOMBERS EYE OFF-CONTRACT ROO

Gun Kangaroos goalkicker Cameron Zurhaar has received “preliminary” interest from Essendon, SEN reports.

Zurhaar, who’s been one of the Kangaroos’ most important forward 50 players over the past four seasons, in May put off contract talks, with his manager Anthony McConville telling the Herald Sun the timing was “not right to have fruitful discussions”.

That call to park negotiations, though, came before North parted ways with senior coach David Noble. And Zurhaar has been in excellent form under caretaker coach Leigh Adams, booting 13 goals from his past four games — including four from 18 disposals and seven marks against Essendon in Round 20 — to take his season tally to a career-high 32.

Bombers inflict more misery on Kangaroos | 01:11

SEN reported the Bombers had “some interest” in Zurhaar, but the Roos also had hope he would re-sign with them after a senior coach is appointed.

The report also suggested the Bombers are looking to acquire a big-bodied midfielder during the AFL exchange period.

Zurhaar, 24, has blossomed at North since being selected as a rookie in 2016.

He’s been among the top two leading goalkickers at the club for the past four straight years, including topping the table in 2020 with 18 majors from 16 games.

HEPPELL GRILLED OVER FRESH SUNS LINK

Essendon skipper Dyson Heppell has been quizzed about his playing future amid reports of a juicy Gold Coast offer.

As Heppell weighs up a one-year offer to stay at Essendon, the Suns have reportedly upped their offer to the veteran defender and are prepared to offer him a two-year deal with the potential of a coaching future at the club post-playing career. .

While no formal deal had been tabled yet, SEN reported on Tuesday the Suns were preparing a four-year offer that would likely entail two seasons as a player then two as an assistant coach.

Suns succumb to Hawks hot streak | 02:07

Speaking to TV reporters on Tuesday, Heppell said his manager and the Bombers were “working through” negotiations, adding he was hopeful “something will be sorted soon.”

Asked if he was torn on his decision, Heppell told reporters: “We’re working through that at the moment. I’m really just honing in on trying to finish off the year well with the Dons and see how we go from there.”

Asked if a longer term deal would be more appealing, Heppell said: “Who knows at the moment? Everything will get sorted ASAP. I’m just trying to lead the club as best as I possibly can.”

As an unrestricted free agent, Heppell could walk to another club without a trade being made.

Commonwealth Games 2022: Kelsey-Lee Barber wins javelin result, Aussie is a freak

However, you want to describe it, Aussie Kelsey-Lee Barber simply has that champion quality that all the great legends are made of.

Fresh from her record-breaking world championships victory last month, Barber pulled off a famous win in the javelin at the Commonwealth Games on Sunday night (AEST), taking the lead with her final throw.

Barber was pushed to her limits by Aussie Mackenzie Little, who had led all the way until the second-final throw of the event.

Barber won the gold by just 16cm with a monster final throw of 64.43m.

Little threw two personal bests in the competition and it still wasn’t enough as Barber produced a monster effort right at the death.

It was a super-human comeback after she tested positive to Covid last week and was isolated from the rest of the Aussie team.

Athletics commentator David Culbert said in commentary on Channel 7: “That is extraordinary, take a bow. That’s unbelievable.”

Barber, who won bronze at the Glasgow Games in 2014 and silver at the Gold Coast Games in 2018, was also stunned when interviewed after the final throws.

“I am in shock still. I went over to the fence and I said… my brain is a bit fuzzy,” she said.

“I don’t know what just happened. But you are right it is a beautiful story to share over my Commonwealth Games journey and I am happy to come away with a gold.”

Barber had thrown 66.91 in the final at the world championships in Oregon.

Izak Rankine Adelaide Crows contract offer, Touk Miller and Tony Cochrane urge him to stay at Gold Coast Suns

Gold Coast’s leadership group has made an impassioned plea for out-of-contract young star Izak Rankine to reject Adelaide’s advances and remain a Sun.

News Corp revealed last week that the Crows were making a major play for Rankine, offering him a five-year deal worth as much as $800,000 per season to return to his home state.

Gold Coast is highly unlikely to match that financial offer and will instead rely on convincing him that his best chance of realizing his potential is at the Suns, while still being willing to pay him about $650,000 a year.

Adelaide is increasingly confident Rankine will request a trade to play for Matthew Nicks’ side, but that wouldn’t come until after Gold Coast’s season ends.

Suns chairman Tony Cochrane told News Corp on Monday they would do “all we can to retain him”.

“I think the club has proven over four years we’re doing everything possible to keep him there and obviously he’s a required player,” Cochrane said.

“We’ve got a great association and relationship with Izak, as everyone has around the club. He’s bought a house up here, he’s very much settled in up here, so that’s just our position for the moment.

“He’s an incredibly popular person around the club. I know first-hand how much time and effort people like (coach) Stuart Dew have put into him and, importantly, I know how highly Stuart rates him.

“He’s got that message loud and clear at the Gold Coast footy club.”

Co-captain Touk Miller also made it clear that convincing the “special” small forward to stay was a top priority, having already re-signed Ben King, Jack Lukosius, Ben Ainsworth, Elijah Hollands and Mac Andrew this year.

“I know there’s a lot of speculation around him and his future, but for us we really want him to be at this club. He’s a special person, a special player,” Miller said.

“We’ve gone to him and had a few chats about how much he means to us and means to the club, so whether that plays a part in the decision, hopefully it does.

Stay or go? Izak Rankine has a big call to make on his playing future. Picture: Getty ImagesSource: Getty Images

“As a leadership group; that’s part of what you have to do. This club wants success, and he can be a key part of that.”

Miller sympathized with Rankine’s situation as he weighs up a career- and life-changing decision, especially with the Suns looking to have turned the corner as a club.

“I know speculation like that can make it really hard around the club and can make things awkward and nervous, but we want him to feel as comfortable as possible, feel like he can still be himself and play his best footy,” he said.

“He’s human. I can say it’s not easy for him and you probably do have your head down a bit more. In saying that, we’ve still got a lot of good things out of him on game day.

“I’m not in his head, I can’t exactly say what he’s going to do, but we really want him to stay. He’s such a special part and key part to our club going forward. We’d love to have him.”

Miller was famously forthright with ex-Gold Coast co-captain Tom Lynch when he revealed in 2018 he was exercising his free agency rights to join Richmond after meeting with several Melbourne-based clubs.

NRL star Bryce Cartwright subject of restraining order to protect anti-vaxxer ex-wife Shanelle

NRL star Bryce Cartwright is hit with restraining order on behalf of his anti-vaxxer ex-wife – after the couple split up

  • Bryce Cartwright and his ex-wife Shanelle split in early 2021 after difficult 2020
  • NRL star and his ex-partner are anti-vaxxers, stating it is their personal choice
  • Cartwright refused mandatory influenza vaccination during 2020 NRL season
  • Walked away from $450,000 contract on Gold Coast to link up with Parramatta
  • Police have now taken out an AVO against the footballer on behalf of his ex-wife

NRL star Bryce Cartwright will front a Sydney court this week after police took out a restraining order to protect his anti-vaxxer ex-wife.

Cartwright split from his former wife Shanelle early last year, just months after walking away from a $450,000-a-season contract with the Gold Coast Titans.

The 27-year-old forward returned to New South Wales in September 2020 with Shanelle, the mother of his two children, citing personal reasons. He now plays for the Parramatta Eels.

Police have sought an apprehended violence order against Cartwright on behalf of Shanelle and the footballer is due to appear in Waverley Local Court on Thursday.

An interim order states that Cartwright must not assault, threaten, stalk, harass or intimidate his former partner as well as other standard conditions he does not damage her property or harm any animal she owns.

Cartwright is not facing any criminal charges.

An incident which led to the AVO being sought was described by sources as a ‘domestic dispute’ which was in no physical way, according to The Daily Telegraph.

The former couple’s beliefs about vaccinations, expressed mostly on social media, were widely condemned by medical experts in 2020.

At the time of their split, Cartwright’s agent Allan Gainey of Pinnacle Sports Management said the split was a ‘personal matter’.

‘Look, the kid is in a good spot at the moment and I want to keep him in that spot,’ Gainey said in January last year. ‘He does n’t need any publicity surrounding his personal life.’

Concerns for Cartwright’s mental state began after he and Shanelle were sent a number of threats on social media due to their controversial stance on vaccinations.

Some of the threats involved harming the couple’s young children.

‘At some point it does take a toll,’ Cartwright said at the time. ‘I speak to a counselor every now and then just to clear my mind.

‘I have little things I like to do, like meditation… it clears my head and can be as simple as just going for a swim, staying off my phone or taking the kids to the beach.’

Cartwright, a standout Penrith junior before making his first grade debut in 2014, was granted permission to continue playing in the NRL in May 2020 despite refusing a mandatory influenza vaccination.

That vaccination was part of the NRL’s return-to-play regulations at the height of the Covid pandemic.

The Titans submitted an application for a medical exemption which was granted by Queensland’s chief medical officer Jeannette Young.

Cartwright and his wife sparked then controversy when they publicly declared they would not vaccinate their young children.

The couple called themselves ‘pro-choice’ rather than ‘anti-vax’.

Once touted as a NSW State of Origin prospect following a strong start to his career with the Panthers, Cartwright made the move to the Titans to work under ex-coach Garth Brennan in 2018.

He played just three games for Gold Coast in 2020 before linking with Parramatta, where he made 19 appearances last year.

Cartwright has turned out for the Eels seven times this year, including coming off the bench in a 36-20 win over Manly on Friday night.

Kangaroos squad, Mal Meninga, World Cup teams, Nation eligibility, Joseph Suaalii, Roosters young gun, news, highlights

Kangaroos coach Mal Meninga has dropped his biggest selection hint yet, revealing Roosters young gun Joseph Suaalii is a “genuine selection option”.

Meninga has a big job on his hands ahead of this year’s World Cup, with a number of players opting to represent their nation of heritage as opposed to the Kangaroos.

Maroons gun Josh Papalii will reportedly ply his trade for Samoa, joining Jarome Luai and Brian To’o, while Felise Kaufusi, Siosifa Talakai, Daniel Tupou and Kotoni Staggs are set to represent Tonga.

But in a huge boost, the Kangaroos are set to pick the Tricolours 19-year-old flyer in the Australian squad — should he chose to represent his country of birth.

Suaalii is currently in his first full season of first grade and was included in Brad Fittler’s Blues squad, scoring 13 NRL tries to date.

“I’m a fan of Joseph, absolutely, and he is right in the picture, particularly if the Roosters keep their run going to the finals,” Meninga said to the SMH.

“He is a genuine selection option, definitely. He’s just a talent. He has always been a talent. I like his courage from him.

“I remember ‘Izzy’ (Israel Folau) came in at a young age, so did ‘GI’ (Greg Inglis), so if you’re talking about age, there are no questions about Joseph handling the international stage.”

Meninga also referenced reports suggesting Australia’s rival code were in pursuit of the young gun, revealing it is “hardly a shock” the Wallabies could make a play.

“I read the reports that the Wallabies are looking at him, which is hardly a shock. They wouldn’t be doing their job if they weren’t looking at league players like him and wanting him to convert,” Meninga said.

“We do the same thing. Because Joseph has played union before, it only made it inevitable. He’s right in the mix for us.”

The Kangaroos incumbent wingers from their last game played in 2019 are Josh Addo-Carr and Nick Cotric.

With Cotric is unlikely to feature, and Addo-Carr being tipped for selection on the edge, Suaalii could find himself in the green and gold.

Suaalii made his intentions clear earlier in the week, making it clear he wants to compete in the end-of-year showcase.

“I honestly haven’t thought about it too much but I want to be there playing at the World Cup,” Suaalii said.

“I’m trying to make that Australian team and if I’m lucky enough I’ll make that Samoan team as well.

“If I get picked for either of them it would be an honour. If I’m playing at the World Cup I’ll be happy.”

Grandmother claims Gold Coast McDonald’s staff mocked her and refused her service

Grandmother claims McDonald’s staff mocked her and refused to serve her after ‘cold fries complaint’ in front of her granddaughter – who is now too scared to return

  • Grandmother bullied and refused to be served by staff at Gold Coast McDonald’s
  • Tracey Lantern claims she attended Ormeau chain last month and complained
  • She returned last Saturday where staff laughed at her and granddaughter
  • Special needs child cried and is too scared to go back to the restaurant

A grandmother claims workers at a McDonald’s bullied and refused to serve her – with her granddaughter now too scared to return.

Tracey Lintern said she visited the Ormeau fast food outlet on the Gold Coast more than a month ago, asking staff to keep her fries warm while she ordered other food.

She then attended the same restaurant last Saturday, and claimed staff mocked and belittled her, before refusing to serve her food.

A grandmother says the treatment of workers at a Gold Coast McDonald's bullied and refused to serve her - with her special needs granddaughter now too scared to return

A grandmother says the treatment of workers at a Gold Coast McDonald’s bullied and refused to serve her – with her special needs granddaughter now too scared to return

Ms Lantern was with her granddaughter at the time, who has anxiety and PTSD, who started to cry after the alleged treatment.

‘She’s crying saying “Grandma what’s going on”,’ the grandmother told the Gold Coast Bulletin.

‘No one served me, so I just walked out.’

Ms Linter picked up an order of a single hot fries for a friend the first time she visited the McDonald’s.

She had recently moved into the area and was ‘so excited’ there was a McDonald’s nearby.

After arriving she decided to order more food, asking servers to keep the food warm.

When the chips were given to her, Ms Linter said they were cold and asked for a new order, which staff did.

The grandmother then turned up last Saturday, where she claims staff immediately treated her poorly.

‘I was buying dinner for all the family so I decided to go inside with such a large order,’ she said.

‘The same [worker] was on. As soon as she saw me she started to talk about me to other staff members.

‘I wasn’t even at the counter yet, then they all turned around at me to see who she was talking about.’

Ms Lantern said a worker alerted other staff, who turned and laughed at the grandmother.

After walking to the counter to complain about the treatment, a female employee said she wouldn’t serve her because ‘last time you came in you were rude’.

The employee then allegedly threatened to call security, prompting Ms Linter’s granddaughter to burst into tears.

‘I was so excited when I moved here that McDonald’s was so close, as I would normally go twice a day, but now I can’t bring myself to go,’ Ms Linter said.

‘Why would you want to go back for that treatment, all over wanting hot chips?’

McDonald’s said it was investigating Ms Linter’s complaint.

‘We do not tolerate anti-social behavior and won’t accept abuse, intimidation, threats or violence towards our employees,’ it said.

‘Our employees have the right to be treated with respect and feel safe in their workplace.

‘We have received the customer’s complaint and it is being reviewed by our team.’

Commonwealth Games 2022: Michelle Jenneke result, 100m hurdles final

Michelle Jenneke has missed out on a bronze medal but just 0.09 seconds as she finished fifth in the final of the 100m hurdles at the Commonwealth Games.

The 29-year-old was just 0.02 seconds off her personal best with a negative wind blowing in her face and it still wasn’t enough for a medal as she fell away in the final 40m.

Defending champion, world champion and world record holder Tobi Amusan won the gold in a Games record time of 12.30 seconds.

Jenneke’s time — 12.68 seconds — was just 0.03 seconds off the previous Games record, but in a lightning race all three of the best runners smashed that previous record.

Aussie athletics great Tamsyn Manou said on Channel 7 after the race that Jenneke would be happy with the result and will be filled with confidence as she begins her preparation for the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

It was another brutal end for Jenneke after she also missed out on a bronze medal at the 2018 Gold Coast Games by just 0.01 seconds.

The difference this time is that the field was red hot, with five of the runners also featuring in the World Championships final last month in Oregon.

“I would have liked another PB, but it wasn’t to be today,” Jenneke told Channel 7 after the race.

“To back up my run from worlds, go fast with a slight headwind there… so really happy with that performance. It’s just tough when you’re racing a field of that quality.

“That’s the fastest race there has ever been at the Commonwealth Games.”

She went on to say how happy she is that she has resurrected her career after so many injuries set backs in recent years.

“I had a pretty rough two years. There were times people in my inner circle were saying to me, ‘Are you sure you want to be doing this?’ And I was just saying back to them, ‘I’ve got more in me’. It shows that I have and I’m really glad I could show the world what I’m capable of,” she said.

Fellow Aussie Celeste Mucci also ran an impressive race to finish seventh.

Jenneke had run the fastest time of her life — 12.63 seconds — two days earlier to thunder into the final, but the time did not count as a new personal best because it was wind-assisted.

Jenneke also ranked a career-saving personal best time of 12.66 at the World Championships.

Jenneke’s time in Oregon made her the second-quickest women’s 100m hurdler Australia has ever produced, behind only Sally Pearson.

She said after the semi-final that she was in “the shape of my life”.

She said her peak physical condition is simply the result of finally being able to have a stretch without injuries where she could get in an extended training block.

“I haven’t really changed things. It’s just one of those things where I’ve been able to string together some training where I haven’t been injured,” she said.

“So I’ve actually been able to get every session done. When you do that things seem to come together. That’s really all it is. Nothing too special.”

Jenneke had finished fourth at the 2018 Games on the Gold Coast, but she did it in a time of 13.07 seconds.

Bulldogs vs Cowboys, Murray Taulagi no-try, Valentine Holmes knock-on, video, result

Just a fortnight after they were gifted a win from a controversial Bunker call, the Cowboys were on the other end with a try being disallowed in their 28-14 win over the Bulldogs.

Although the Cowboys walked away with the win, there’s question marks over a Murray Taulagi try that was disallowed half way through the second half.

Taulagi crossed untouched in the corner to give his side a two-point lead with 20 minutes to go only for the referee to send it up to the Bunker.

Ricky apologizes for salmon spray | 01:04

“I’m looking for a bat-on, whether it goes forward,” referee Adam Gee said.

The play in question was Tom Dearden’s cutout pass to Taulagi that clipped Valentine Holmes’ shoulder before landing in Taulagi’s hands.

“It’s not a knock-on when it comes off his shoulder,” Fox League commentator Brenton Speed said.

“It goes back anyway,” Steve Roach added.

Speed was confident that “this try will stand”, however, Bunker official Matt Noyen ruled it a no-try saying “the ball touches the upper-arm, shoulder of Valentine Holmes… we’re supporting the on-field decision of the ball traveling forward.”

‘He pretty much saved my life’ | 01:07

Both Speed and Roach were stunned by the call.

“It seems to me that we always find a way of why it’s not a try now,” Roach said.

“He was standing behind him, so how does it go forward?”

Sideline commentator Billy Moore agreed with Roach saying, “for me that was a try.”

The call didn’t mean too much in the context of the game though, with the Cowboys going on to score three more tries to seal the win.

It comes just two weeks after the Cowboys were on the other end of a contentious Bunker decision when they escaped with a controversial 27-26 win over the Tigers.

The Cowboys were awarded an escort penalty and Valentine Holmes slotted a goal on the siren to steal the win. Even coach Todd Payten conceded afterwards that the call was “debatable.”

But the Knights were able to hang on and end their four-game losing streak… and finally move on from a dramatic week following the David Klemmer saga.

MATCH PREVIEW

The Wests Tigers will chase back-to-back wins for just the second time this season when they take on the Knights at Campbelltown Stadium in the final game of Round 21.

The Knights got the bragging rights last time these two teams faced off but a lot has changed since then.

Both are languishing near the bottom of the table, but the Tigers are coming off an inspiring win over the Broncos last week, while the Knights have lost four consecutive games — and are coming off a dramatic few days for the club.

The Knights will be without David Klemmer after the star prop was stood down from selection due to disciplinary reasons in a storyline that has since blown up in the club’s face.

Jacob Saifiti takes Klemmer’s place in the starting pack, while star center Bradman Best makes a welcome return from a thumb injury.

For the Tigers, Jackson Hastings is out for the season, opening the door for young gun Fonua Pole to start at lock.

Filling Pole’s spot on the bench is 27-year-old debutant Tom Freebairn — captain of the Western Suburbs Magpies’ NSW Cup side.

A win for the Tigers will see them leapfrog the Knights on the ladder and move further away from the wooden spoon. But if the Knights get a much-needed win, they will jump to 13th, ahead of the Warriors.
