UFC 2022: Champ’s brother Mohammed Usman stuns with brutal KO to win The Ultimate Fighter

The UFC heavyweight division could have another superstar on its hands if a brutal knockout finish on Sunday (AEST) is anything to go by.

Mohammed Usman, the younger brother of UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman, defeated Zac Pauga via TKO to win the season 30 finale of The Ultimate Fighter.

Usman had a lackluster opening round but only needed 36 seconds to end the bout in the second round.

He landed a heavy but deft left hook on Pauga, who immediately fell to the canvas, where he lay motionless.

The referee stopped the fight and launched himself over Pauga to ensure Usman didn’t do any more damage.

Usman flexed and slapped his chest as he claimed victory in The Ultimate Fighter — the reality MMA series run by UFC boss Dana White.

Kamaru and Mohammed became the first brothers to both win the competition.

Mohammed’s performance blew fans away and had many predicting big things for him if and when he makes his UFC debut.

CBS Sports’ Shakiel Mahjouri tweeted: “WOAH! Mohammad Usman erases a terrible first round and evaporates Zac Pauga from this universe.”

ESPN’s Myron Medcalf joked: “Imagine being a kid on the playground and you decide to mess with one of the Usman kids.

“And then they’re like, OK. Let me go and get my brothers. And those dudes show up. Ain’t gonna be fun.”

Kamaru, who is No. 1 in the UFC’s pound for pound rankings, defended his welterweight belt against Colby Covington last year and is set to return to the octagon against Leon Edwards at UFC 278 later this month.

UFC Fight Night 2022, Thiago Santos vs Jamahal Hill, time, how to watch, Bryan Battle knockout, video, reaction, record

It has not even been a year since Bryan Battle won The Ultimate Fighter 29 but the 27-year-old has quickly risen up the ranks and just made his biggest statement yet.

Entering the octagon for his welterweight debut, Battle (8-1 MMA, 3-0 UFC) landed a thundering head kick to send Takashi Sato to the canvas (16-6 MMA, 2-3 UFC).

It secured Battle a brutal knockout win just 44 seconds into the fight.

“Bryan Battle wants everyone to know he is for real,” Brendan Fitzgerald said in commentary.

“Stop doubting him. He was still feeling a little bit disrespected and under-the-radar in anticipation of this fight.”

Sato had not been finished with strikes since 2015 but Battle said post-fight that the head kick was something he was aiming to use, perhaps not that soon though.

“It’s crazy,” Battle said.

“It’s something that we saw, it’s something we anticipated. I didn’t see it happening quite so soon. That was probably the most beautiful strike I’ve ever thrown.”

It certainly earned Battle plenty of accolades from former UFC fighters Rashad Evans and Din Thomas, who were sitting octagon-side during the fight.

“Oh my God, that kick was absolutely amazing,” Evans said.

“The timing on it was absolutely perfect. He got Sato throwing a punch at the same time as he was throwing a punch and then followed through with a kick. It was just absolutely amazing. Just the sound of it was nasty.

“It put him right out. Bryan Battle makes a big statement.”

“He looked good from top to bottom,” Thomas added.

“Even in the beginning, he looked smooth on his feet. It sounded like he hit a watermelon with a baseball bat, it was a nasty sound to be sitting next to the octagon.”

Battle took the opportunity to call out Bryan Barberena and Ian Garry post-fight, even mistakenly taking aim at the former for spelling his name ‘Brian’.

“I’m not saying this man’s ducking me, but at the least, he’s being protected,” Battle said of Garry.

“I want you. I want all the clout. Neither one of us ranked, nothing is holding us back.”

Barberena was quick to respond on Twitter, taking a cheeky shot at Battle for the name mix-up.

UFC news 2022: Israel Adesanya, Alex Pereira, UFC 281, Dana White, November, title fight

Israel Adesanya will have the chance to re-write some personal history when he defends his UFC middleweight title against Brazilian Alex Pereira on November 13 (AEST).

World champion Adesanya announced on Sports Center that he’ll fight old rival Pereira in a title fight at UFC 281 at New York’s Madison Square Garden.

The highly anticipated grudge match pits the two old foes against each other for the first time in mixed martial arts, after fighting twice before in kickboxing.

Adesanya was visibly shocked by the judges’ decision after his first fight with Pereira, with the Brazilian winning by unanimous decision.

The pair had their rematch less than a year later in March 2017, with a left hand knocking the Nigerian-born fight out during the third round.

While he hasn’t felt the need to chase revenge after losing both fights, Adesanya vowed to “slam this b****” ahead of their meeting at the famous New York venue later this year.

“Have I ever shied away from a fight? I’ve always picked the guy no one wants to fight,” Adesanya said on Sports Center.

“The guy that everyone runs away from, I run towards. So I run towards the fire and this is no different.

“After he beat me in Brazil, I never had any plans of trying to get revenge or anything like that because I don’t hold onto things.

“I’m telling you, the universe has presented this to me and it’s right there. It’s the perfect alley-oop and I’m going to slam this b****”.

Adesanya held onto his middleweight crown with a unanimous decision win over American Jared Cannonier at UFC 276 last month.

The victory extended the 33-year-old’s unbeaten run to three fights, after losing to Polish fighter Jan Blachowicz by unanimous decision in the UFC light heavyweight title fight last year.

As for his opponent, Pereira is undefeated from three fights so far in the UFC whilst he’s undefeated in his last six MMA fights.

The Brazilian is coming off a first-round knockout of the highly rated Sean Strickland.

MMA world slams ex-UFC star for ‘soccer kicking’ knocked out opponent in the face

Mixed Martial Arts fans smoked at fighter Daichi Abe after he landed a brutal soccer kick on his already knocked out opponent.

The former UFC welterweight flatlined Brazilian Marcos Yoshio de Souza in the second round of their 176lb showdown at RIZIN 37 late last month, The Sun reports.

Abe shut De Souza’s lights off with a picture-perfect one-two in the second round of their showdown at the Saitama Super Arena in Japan.

De Souza crumpled to the canvas after the right hand connected and lay flat on his back unconscious.

But Abe didn’t stop there, launching into and landing a brutal soccer kick straight on the fallen and defenceless De Souza.

And fight fans were far from happy with the sickening strike.

One tweeted: “Soccer kick def uncalled for. Guy should be ashamed.”

Another said: “I’m all for soccer kicks, but IDK about when the dude is already f***ing knocked out.”

And another said: “Unfortunately… this is legal.”

Soccer kicks are illegal in most MMA promotions across the world including the UFC, which has adopted the unified rules of the sport.

But the sickening strikes — as well as knees to the head of a downed opponent — are legal in Asian-based fight promotions ONE Championship and RIZIN.

Several fans, however, have called for the strikes to be allowed in all promotions.

One fan said: “Best rule set in MMA.”

Another said: “MMA needs soccer kicks and knees to a downed opponent. The Unified MMA rules is garbage.”

Victory over De Souza saw 30-year-old Abe move to 5-1 in his last six outings.

UFC 2022: Julianna Pena plastic surgery after defeating Amanda Nunes, photos, video

The Washington star, 32, took on Amanda Nunes at UFC 277 in Texas on Sunday (AEST). But she took several thick blows to her head and ended up looking like something out of a horror movie as blood poured down her face.

UFC chief Dana White confirmed she was immediately taken to see specialists as soon as her defeat was confirmed by the judges after lasting the distance.

“Julianna’s got a big chunk missing from her forehead,” White said.

“She’s going to see a plastic surgeon right now.”

He then admitted it could prove the end of Pena’s incredible career, which saw her crowned UFC bantamweight world champ by beating Nunes in a major shock last December.

“It takes some time to heal and then I don’t know,” he added.

“She got pretty banged up tonight, she got five or six knockdowns in the first two rounds.

“She was hurt. She needs to take some time off, relax, spend some time with her daughter de ella and then we will go from there. ”

Nunes is widely regarded as one of the greatest UFC fighters of all time. And she proved exactly why with a superb performance to regain her status as the two-weight queen at the American Airlines Center in Dallas.

The Brazilian won with a comfortable unanimous decision – 50-45, 50-44 and 50-43 – and was carried out of the cage on one of her team’s shoulders.

And then to top it off, Nunes brilliantly downed a pint of beer that she’d been desperate to drink.

The 34-year-old roared in her post-fight interview: “We are here making history again. Double champion again baby. Let’s go.”
