Gogglebox star Di Kershaw is farewelled at funeral by grieving husband Mick

Di Kershaw enjoyed the fame she found late in her life on Gogglebox Australia, happily posing for selfies with fans of the show.

She liked a lot of things in her 77 years: shopping, trashy gossip magazines, fashion and kombucha and vodka on the rocks in a wine glass.

But as mourners heard at the part-time TV star’s funeral in Sydney on Friday, most of all she was devoted to her husband Mick, children Alex and Victoria and six-year-old grandson Harvey.

To those who knew Di only from Gogglebox she was the stylishly dressed master of withering put-downs as she and Mick dissected television shows on their couch.

The art dealing couple would have celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary last Thursday and had been together 60 years all up.

Mick and Di had been on Gogglebox since its first season in 2015 and were among the most identifiable participants in the Channel 10-Foxtel program.

Diane Lesley Kershaw died of stomach cancer aged 77 on July 22 and chose to be farewelled in a plain timber coffin at the the Garrison Church at Millers Point.

Son Alex, 45, and daughter Victoria, 43, came to the Anglican service to celebrate a life well lived with their 80-year-old father.

Mourners from the art world celebrated the life of Di Kershaw

Alex Kershaw said Mick and Di did everything together – movies on Sunday nights, travel, collecting art – and were out more nights a week than most of his hipster students.

After a long courtship they tied the knot in 1967, the same year Johnny Cash and June Carter released the classic country song Jackson.

‘They got married in a fever, hotter than a pepper sprout,’ Alex said, quoting the opening lyrics of the hit single.

The art lecturer described how Mick and Di did everything together – movies on Sunday nights, travel, collecting art – and were out more nights a week than most of his hipster students.

‘Di’s friends all know she knew how to throw a bloody good party,’ he said.

Alex recalled how his mother liked a glass of red wine – as viewers of Gogglebox would know – ‘but she could not care less if it was a $10 bottle or a $100 bottle’.

She was a woman who did not suffer fools gladly and could run roughshod over anyone who got in her way but cared deeply about all those she loved.

Mick, 80, told Daily Mail Australia that 77-year-old Di fell ill about three months ago when she began having trouble keeping food down. She spent nine weeks in St Vincent's Hospital at Darlinghurst in Sydney's inner-city and her de ella last fortnight in the Sacred Heart Hospice

Mick, 80, told Daily Mail Australia that 77-year-old Di fell ill about three months ago when she began having trouble keeping food down. She spent nine weeks in St Vincent’s Hospital at Darlinghurst in Sydney’s inner-city and her de ella last fortnight in the Sacred Heart Hospice

‘She liked to be in control and she wasn’t particularly happy when she wasn’t,’ Alex said.

The service heard Di was an extrovert who stood out in any crowd. She did not watch the nightly news, she believed in astrology and ‘arranged’ food rather than cooking it.

She had always seemed indestructible.

Alex told a series of anecdotes that summed up his mother’s character from all stages of her life.

A natural beauty who had modeled as a teenager, Di described herself before meeting Mick as ‘a gal from Newport that couldn’t be caught’.

She had been expelled from school at 15 after being found at an arts students ball at the old Trocadero dance hall in George Street.

'The cancer spread and was inoperable,' Mick said. 'The only alternative to that was chemo or radiation but she was far too weak to be put through that. Di is seen bottom row, second from right, with the cast of Gogglebox Australia

On a 1976 trip to San Francisco she was approached by singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell who wanted to buy the Victorian night dress she was wearing. Say told her she couldn’t have it.

‘Life is for living,’ she used to say.

‘There was a vitality that you could call infectiously effervescent,’ Alex said. ‘She was a warrior queen who walked her talk about her.’

Being asked to appear on Gogglebox had been a chance to find a new kind of fun in old age that she and Mick wholeheartedly embraced.

‘She adored being on Gogglebox,’ Alex said.

Mick and Di were approached to be on the show by a production scout for EndemolShine at a cocktail party for the opening of an art exhibition at Paddington.

The couple was unfamiliar with the original British Gogglebox but the scout saw they had something together that would appeal to audiences of a local version.

Mick and Di didn’t think about the proposition for long. They had sold their Indigenous art galleries in Darlinghurst and Cairns and had some spare time in semi-retirement.

The pair grew up close to the production staff they invited into their loungeroom, welcoming births and attending the wedding of one member.

They had been looking forward to settling back into the couch to appear on the next season of Gogglebox which begins airing on August 25.

I spent nine weeks in St Vincent’s Hospital at Darlinghurst in Sydney’s inner-city and the last fortnight in the Sacred Heart Hospice next door.

Di kept her terminal diagnosis a secret from all but those closest to the art dealing couple. The former model, who had been unable to eat and was being fed intravenously, spent her last days surrounded by family

Di kept her terminal diagnosis a secret from all but those closest to the family. ‘She was strong willed and she was brave,’ Alex said.

‘Mick is certainly going to miss being bossed around.’ She was ‘giving lip’ right to the end.

Mick previously told Daily Mail Australia that Di’s cancer was inoperable and she chose to stop being fed intravenously.

‘Part of that decision was thinking about us,’ he said. ‘A big part of that decision was not wanting to put us through that.’

Filming of the next season of Gogglebox began early this month and Mick said he would not be doing the show without Di: ‘We were a couple’.

The humble one-bed flat London Olivia Newton-John called home almost 50 years ago

Residents living in flats in a property where Olivia Newton-John bought her first London home – before she found global stardom – have called for a blue plaque on the building to commemorate her life.

The singer, who died at the age of 73 on Sunday, invested in the humble one-bed apartment almost 50 years ago.

The modest one-bedroomed property in upmarket West Hampstead is a far cry from the £4m luxury ranch in Santa Ynez, Southern California where the star spent her final days with her husband John Easterling, surrounded by family and friends before her death this week.

Deeds show that on March 19, 1973, Newton-John, then aged just 24, spent £19,500 on the second-floor flat with its own small roof terrace just off West Hampstead’s main thoroughfare West End Lane.

A copy of the title deeds and 99-year lease for the property is kept in storage at the Land Registry along with millions of others. The flat’s value, in Dennington Park Road, now rented out, is estimated at around £600,000 these days.

One current occupier of the five other flats in the same building said he was intrigued to notice that groups of people on walking tours would stop outside in the street and gaze up at the second floor.

‘I popped outside and asked them why they were there,’ he said, ‘and they told me Olivia Newton-John used to live there. I went back and looked at the property deeds, and there was her name de ella, barely legible.

‘I think there should be a blue plaque marking this as the first flat she owned in London, which I’m sure it must be.’

In 1973 Olivia’s fledgling career was going well, but she was still nowhere near the superstar status she would enjoy with her starring role in Grease, playing Sandy opposite John Travolta’s Danny, five years later.

Born in England in 1948, Olivia was aged just five when her parents emigrated to Melbourne, and she said in later life that she always regarded herself as an Australian.

However she returned to London in 1966 after winning the plane ticket and (Aus) $300 in a talent competition called Sing, Sing, Sing the previous year while still at school.

By then her parents, Brin and Irene, had divorced and Olivia’s mother accompanied her daughter to London for her crack at the big time.

Online sources suggest Dennington Park Road was Olivia’s first home in London, as early as 1965, but our research shows she lived in a succession of other rented properties before buying the flat.

Initially Olivia and mum Irene lived in a £9-a-week flat in Perons Court, Hampstead and struggled to get by as Olivia worked the club circuit, later forming a duo for a spell with a friend from Down Under, Pat Carroll.

Olivia’s debut solo single in 1966, Till You Say You’ll Be Mine, written by US songwriter Jackie DeShannon, was recorded at Decca Studios and duly released by the label as part of the prize for winning the Australian television talent competition.

The one-off single was a flop, and it was not until 1971 that Olivia’s first big break came with a cover of Bob Dylan’s If Not For You.

For several years she was in a relationship with The Shadows’ Bruce Welch, living at his flat in London, after working as a support act for the group and Cliff Richard on stage and TV.

Also in 1971 she became a regular guest singer on the prime-time Saturday night BBC TV variety show, It’s Cliff Richard.

Hits followed by Olivia with the country ballad Banks of the Ohio and Let Me be There, both of which did well in the United States.

In 1974 she was chosen to sing the UK’s entry at Eurovision, Long Live Love, coming joint fourth to Abba’s massive debut hit, Waterloo for Sweden.

Dame Olivia, as she would become in the 2020 New Year’s Honours, became a prominent campaigner for breast cancer research, after being given the first of three cancer diagnoses in 1992.

Following her initial battle with the disease, she had a partial mastectomy and reconstruction. Subsequent diagnoses followed in 2013 and 2018, when she told fans she was treating the illness ‘naturally’ and was using cannabis oil for the pain.

Drivers warn Australians about the MG3: ‘Deserves to be in hell’

Straight-talking Aussies have unleashed on the MG3, a Chinese-made car that’s soaring up the sales chart across the country.

Normm Jean wrote a scathing review of the MG3, which can be purchased for $18,990 drive-away, making it the cheapest new car in the country.

MG made its debut as one of Australia’s highest-selling marques in March 2022 and has kept its place in the top 10 thanks to big sales of all three of its models – including the MG3, the best-selling vehicle in its segment.

The vehicle comes in three specifications, the Core priced at $18,990, the Core with navigation at $19,400 and the Excite, which has a price tag of $20,490.

He said he had been ‘unfortunate’ enough to take the Excite model for a spin and that he soon found he and the car were incompatible.

Straight-talking Aussies have unleashed on a car currently taking the country by storm as one driver describes the vehicle as a 'truly hateful car' (pictured, the MG3 Excite in white)

One MG3 owner described it as a ‘truly hateful car’ and said people were better off buying a second-hand car. Pictured is a stock image of a man driving a car

‘The salesperson told me she didn’t think I would like it when she gave me the keys to the demo Excite model, so we were starting off good,’ he said.

Mr Jean explained he was around 177cm tall and ‘not a giant’, but struggled to find a comfortable position in the hatchback.

‘Not to mention the rattles that a car with 50 km shouldn’t have,’ he said.

The car enthusiast complained there was only one cup holder, no digital speedometer, and the sun-visors were too small.

‘The plastic on the A-Pillar is so poorly fitting that it doesn’t like up with the windscreen properly,’ he said.

He said that in 2019 the MG3 Excite was selling for $17,490 drive away.

‘The exact car is now $20,490. It hasn’t been updated, or refreshed. It’s just had its price hiked up. I told my friend it was a sh*t heap and went back to the dealer.

For most of its history, MG was associated with British open-top roadsters but that changed with the collapse of Rover in 2005, which saw the Chinese state-owned SAIC group take over (pictured is Scottish actor Ewan McGregor with a classic MGA from 1962 )

For most of its history, MG was associated with British open-top roadsters but that changed with the collapse of Rover in 2005, which saw the Chinese state-owned SAIC group take over (pictured is Scottish actor Ewan McGregor with a classic MGA from 1962 )

‘In conclusion, if the MG3 was $12,990 drive away, I would absolutely buy one. Because it’s so cheap, who cares?

‘Drive the wheels off it, and send it to the wreckers when it’s stuffed. But there is no way on earth that I would spend $21,000 on this car.’

Mr Jean told Daily Mail Australia the car’s popularity was down to the reputation MG earned in the 1960s as the makers of a classic English sports car.

For most of its history, MG – also known as Morris Garages – was associated with British open-top roadsters, but that changed with the collapse of Rover in 2005, which saw the Chinese state-owned SAIC group take over.

Since then, MG has become synonymous with budget SUVs and hatches made in China – a far cry from its 1924 origins as a sports car badge.

‘It’s based on the badge,’ he said.

‘If you take the MG badge off them, they are just a cheap Chinese-made car that’s similar to a 2004 Hyundai Getz.’

‘The 1.5 engine and 4-speed car deserves to be in hell. It’s slow, and I mean slow. I can only compare it to a 1.2 Kia Picanto, but even that felt better.

‘But by far the worst thing for me, I couldn’t get the seat to lower, nor could I get the steering wheel to go high enough for me to get even remotely comfortable.’

Normm Jean has issued a scathing review of the MG3 Excite (seen here in blue), which can be purchased for $20,490 drive-away to Facebook page 'S*** Cars of Australia'

Normm Jean has issued a scathing review of the MG3 Excite (seen here in blue), which can be purchased for $20,490 drive-away to Facebook page ‘S*** Cars of Australia’

Another motorist who asked to remain anonymous, described the MG3 Excite as a ‘truly hateful car’ and said people were better off buying a second-hand car.

‘There is a place for these types of cars, for people who want to get from A to B and don’t really care for a car or a brand,’ he said.

‘However, to charge $21,000 for a car of this quality, you would be better off buying a second-hand Corolla, Yaris or Mazda 2.

‘They are what I feel a very expensive disposable car that has been disguised as something cheap and cheerful.’

MG has previously said buyers also didn't care that it was Chinese owned and Chinese built - and that sales are soaring accrross the country because the vehicle has a seven year unlimited kilometre warranty

An MG spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia that in becoming the number-one seller in the segment, it has beaten its new vehicle rivals.

‘The continued popularity of the MG3 is testament to how many Australians have found this model to suit their needs both in style and performance,’ they said.

‘Additionally, for peace of mind, the MG comes with a comprehensive seven-year unlimited kilometer warranty and access to more than 100 dealers around Australia and New Zealand.’

Danny Lenartic, MG’s general manager of electric vehicles in Australia and New Zealand expects the marque to become a big part of Australia’s automotive future

Earlier in the year, Danny Lenartic, MG Motor’s general manager of electric vehicles in Australia and New Zealand, told Daily Mail Australia he expects the mark to be a big part of Australia’s automotive future.

Mr Lenartic said buyers also didn’t care that it was Chinese-owned and Chinese-built despite Communist President Xi Jinping’s trade sanctions against Australia.

‘Country of origin to me today isn’t as important as the core values that the people behind the brand stand for,’ he said.

‘The MG history has always been a value brand, so it’s always been the affordable sports car, that’s how it gained its popularity.

‘Realistically, the core values of MG haven’t changed – for me, we’ve held on to that identity.’

Speaking on GMB, she said: ‘We heard from so many people, in the business, that surprised us more than anything. The fans, not so much.

It was never ever a thought to replace her, no one in TLC can be replaced. Nobody can fill those shoes.’

She went on to explain that while she and T-Boz were adament that there would be no new members, it took some time for others to see their point of view.

Chilli added: ‘It took a while for people to get it. But through touring it keeps her memory of her alive, we never mute out her raps of her or anything.’

Aldi Australia introduces smaller trolleys in stores

Shoppers thrilled after Aldi introduces a VERY in-demand new feature in stores: ‘We’ve been waiting for this moment for years’

  • Aldi Australia has introduced smaller sized trolleys in stores in a national rollout
  • A photo showing the size was shared online, sending customers into a spin
  • The new size will provide shoppers with ‘greater convenience’

Customers are praising Aldi after small trolleys were spotted in Australian stores.

A photo posted to the Aldi Mums Facebook group shows the new trolleys in a bay and is believed to be the first of a nationwide rollout.

Shoppers complained online saying the large trolleys, which are 1.1m high, are ‘enormous’ and were unsuitable for pregnant women, new mums carrying babies and the elderly.

In June the supermarket confirmed to Daily Mail Australia the smaller trolleys will provide shoppers with ‘greater convenience’.

‘We recognize that customers are looking for greater convenience when they visit our stores, as it’s almost impossible not to pick up the excellent value products on offer,’ an Aldi spokesperson said.

‘That’s why we’re introducing smaller trolleys across all our locations, so our customers can more efficiently pick up products while doing smaller grocery shops.’

The image of the small trolleys received more than 2,400 ‘likes’ and shoppers seemed obsessed with the new offer.

‘Sooo much easier for when I’m wearing baby in the carrier!!!’ one mum wrote, another added: ‘Yes I just used one. I was surprised to see them. A great addition.’

‘Thank god, I’m sick of falling into the trolley trying to get my groceries out,’ a third joked.

A short woman said: ‘About time, for me 144cm of shortness the trolleys are sooooo big, almost climbing in every time. well done Aldi for the newer half cart smaller trolleys.’

It follows after Aldi shoppers were left pleasantly surprised by the retailer’s decision to rollout shopping baskets across all their Australian stores.

The German-owned retailer posted to Facebook in April to reveal the decision which many customers believe has been ‘a long time coming’.

‘Goodbye octopus arms,’ they wrote in the post.

‘We’re rolling out baskets across all our stores, to help you with your weekly shop and dash in top-ups.’

The baskets, which were first trialed in select stores in July, will be available nation-wide in 2022 – according to a spokesperson for the German-owned store.

Customers said the announcement was ‘about time’.

Steph Claire Smith is doing the 30-day sex challenge with her husband

Fitness star Steph Claire Smith, 28, shares the month-long ‘sex challenge’ she’s trying with her husband – and the strict rules they’re sticking to

  • Fitness star Steph Claire Smith revealed she’s taken on a 30-day sex challenge
  • She and her husband have to be intimate daily for a month straight
  • The 28-year-old said the pair have defined intimacy as anything ‘beyond kissing’
  • She said some days sex can be a ‘full-on task’ and she ‘can’t be bothered’
  • But admitted increased intimacy has bought the couple closer together

Fitness entrepreneur Steph Claire Smith has revealed she and her husband are completing a 30-day sex challenge where they must be intimate with each other every day for a month.

On her KICPOD podcast, the mum-of-one confessed to co-host Laura Henshaw that she was on day 13 of the challenge with her husband, Josh Miller, and listed the rules they’ve set.

Steph said she and Josh have to be intimate with each other beyond kissing every day and while it’s been ‘really hard’ and there are times she ‘just can’t be bothered’, the test has brought the pair closer together.

‘The way we’ve defined it is further than kissing but doesn’t necessarily have to be all the way to sex, if you can read between the lines,’ she explained and added they decided to take on the challenge after Josh saw it on-line.

Laura was audibly shocked by the saucy news and asked Steph if she was tired.

The 28-year-old admitted daily sex can sometimes feel like a ‘full-on task’ and the couple, who have a one-year-old Harvey, find it difficult to keep up the challenge if they’ve had an argument.

‘There have been days where we have had an argument and then it’s like ‘oh now we have to have sex as well’,’ she said.

‘But in the back of our minds, we really want to do this for each other so you just work through it and it happens and then you’re in a really good mood before you go to bed.’

Steph said some days are easier than others and she sometimes ‘just can’t be bothered’.

‘There are some days, as there are without a challenge, where you genuinely really feel up to it naturally without it being a task so there have been times where it’s felt easier and it has felt like more of a habit but it’s still hard, ‘she said.

She said her and Josh are typically intimate at the end of the day but they’re ‘trying to fix that’ and the challenge has had its benefits on their relationship.

‘When we are close and intimate like that everything is better we get along better, we’re more cuddly throughout the day and we’re nicer to each other,’ she said.

‘I’m interested to see if it gets easier or it gets harder and what comes from the rest of the challenge.’

Dad sets daughter up with a cute guy at the pub

Single woman, 30, was set up with a ‘hot stranger’ at a pub by her DAD in a saga followed by millions on TikTok – and you won’t believe what happened next

  • An Australian publicist has shared the incredible way she met her now-boyfriend
  • Alice James, from Melbourne, said her dad asked for a cute man’s number for her
  • The 30-year-old and her father were enjoying beers at the pub
  • Her dad amused her attention to the ‘total hottie’ at the bar before talking to him
  • Since then the two went on a number of ‘amazing dates’ before making it official
  • Alice says her dad is her ‘ultimate wingman’ and owes it all to him

A ‘very single’ Australian publicist has shared the moment her ‘ultimate wingman’ dad asked for a cute guy’s number on her behalf at a pub, which led to becoming her now-boyfriend – and thousands are eager to know who he is.

Alice James, from Melbourne, was enjoying her father’s company while sipping on a pint of ale after the opening night of Six The Musical.

The 30-year-old told FEMAIL the two were ‘talking garbage’ before her dad James diverted her attention to the ‘total hottie’ sitting at the bar.

‘I had obviously noticed this stunning gentleman with his mate at the bar as soon as we walked in. Dad said “leave it with me” then jumped off his seat and proceeded to talk to these two guys,’ she recalled.

James struck up a conversation with the young men asking if they ‘go for Collingwood’, then turned to the eligible bachelor asking how old he was and if he was single.

‘Dad then pointed to me saying “well this is my daughter and she is very single”. As the night went on we all kept chatting until the two boys at the bar got up to leave and dad stopped them saying: “Wait! You can’t leave! You haven’t exchanged numbers!”,’ Alice recalled.

In a rush James ran to the bar, grabbed the order pad and made the two write down each other’s digits.

‘The boy was so nervous that he actually handed his number to my dad instead of me – hilarious!’ Alice said.

The following morning Alice sent the man a text saying ‘Sorry about my dad’ with a laughing emoji.

‘I wasn’t sure if he was interested or dad had just forced him to talk to me. But he replied and said it was a treat to meet us both and invited me out to dinner a few nights later,’ she said.

‘After our first date we both just had such a good time, there were a lot of laughs and chemistry and it just felt refreshingly right.’

Since then the two have continued to go on ‘amazing’ dates and both are ‘just so happy’.

A few weeks prior to the pub night Alice had also stopped using dating apps and wanted to take a break because she ‘wasn’t having fun anymore’.

But to her surprise she was able to meet someone in public thanks to her dad.

‘We had both been single for a while with some pretty grim dating history so we feel very lucky to have this connection that we do,’ she said.

Dad James struck up a conversation with the single man and pointed out how Alice is also single. When the man and his friend of him got up to leave James said: 'Wait! You can't leave! You haven't exchanged numbers!'

And now after getting to know each other, the guy from the pub asked Alice to be his girlfriend – and she said yes.

‘I definitely owe it all to dad, the ultimate Wingman and the Maverick to my Goose because there is no way either of us would have made the first move at the pub and how sad that this relationship may never have happened,’ she said.

‘It also made the first meeting of the parents very stress free, because I think he was pretty confident that he already had dad’s tick of approval!’

The two singles started texting and went on a number of 'amazing dates' before he eventually asked Alice to be his girlfriend - and she said yes

Many praised James for his action and being the ‘best wingman ever’.

‘Ummm any chance I can like, borrow your dad?!’ one person wrote in the comments, another added: ‘My dad needs to step up.’

A third added: ‘This is LEGIT the best.. go Daz!’
