The Block: Elle and Joel quit because she ‘didn’t want to wear hi-vis for 12 weeks’

The Block’s executive producer has accused ‘quitters’ Joel Patfull and Elle Ferguson of throwing in the towel because they couldn’t handle 12 weeks on a building site in country Victoria.

Julian Cress, the show’s creator who has overseen all 18 seasons of Nine’s popular renovation show, said the crew was blindsided when the Sydney couple downed tools during the first week of shooting in April.

While Elle and Joel insist they quit because of a family emergency, Mr Cress told the Herald Sun it may have been due to more superficial concerns.

He claimed Elle, a 36-year-old fashion influencer from Bondi, baulked at the idea of donning hi-vis workwear instead of her usual chic wardrobe.

Mr Cress also cast doubt on the couple’s claim they were forced to leave the show to care for Joel’s ailing mother after she had a nasty fall at her home in Adelaide.

‘[Elle] It seemed a bit shocked that she was going to have to spend 12 weeks in hi-vis on a worksite,’ he said.

Mr Cress said he was impressed by the couple’s performance in the first challenge of the season, so it was ‘dumbstruck’ when they called him late on April 15 to say they weren’t enjoying themselves and feared the show ‘was not quite on brand for them’.

He arranged to have a meeting with them the next morning, but by the time he arrived at the building site they had already packed up and left.

‘They never spoke to any of us again,’ he added.

While the pair insist they quit the production because of a family emergency, Mr Cress told the Herald Sun that Elle (pictured), a 36-year-old fashion influencer from Bondi, baulked at the idea of donning hi-vis workwear instead of her usual chic wardrobe

Mr Cress acknowledged Joel’s mother did have an accident in Adelaide, and confirmed production had paid to fly the couple interstate to see her the week before filming began.

But he disputed claims in the media that Joel and Elle only quit because they had been unable to get confirmation from producers that they could ‘come and go’ from the construction site in Gisborne to visit his ailing mother in South Australia.

‘I can understand why they did not feel they didn’t get an answer to that question, because they never asked it,’ he said.

Mr Cress added that The Block is always willing to accommodate teams during family emergencies, and once shut down production for an entire week in 2013 when the mother of one of the contestants fell ill.

‘We are not the kind of program that says no to somebody going to visit a sick mother. We never have been, we never will be,’ he said.

Elle and Joel, a 37-year-old retired AFL player, downed tools in April – just two days into filming – after his mother Trish fractured her neck during a fall at her home.

The blogger later posted a cryptic message on Instagram hinting at their exit: ‘Wherever you are in the world. Whatever you are doing. Family always comes first.’

As reported by TV Week, The Block host Scott told the other contestants they left because the show wasn’t ‘on brand’ for them as glamorous influencers.

He also said they had complained ‘the toilet paper was too scratchy’.

Like Cress, Scott wasn’t convinced by the team’s reason for quitting the show, saying: ‘Of course, family comes first on The Block – we’ve stopped production before when people have had family emergencies.

‘And of course, I wasn’t referring to somebody going to visit their sick mother… It was because they’d given us no reason.’

Scott previously said at the Logie Awards that Elle and Joel giving up so soon into the competition was ‘unAustralian’ and ‘p**s poor’.

He told TV Tonight: ‘We had a 48-hour challenge to choose the house that you get and they scarpered after 48 hours. It’s something that’s never happened before.’

‘Forty-five thousand people applied to be on The Block and win life-changing money. These guys got on and they just couldn’t handle the pace after 48 hours,’ he continued.

‘Which to me is a bit unAustralian! Have a go! It’s p**s poor.’

The couple made the difficult decision to leave the Channel Nine renovation show two days into filming, after Joel’s mum suffered the nasty fall.

The former footy star’s mother reportedly broke her coccyx and fractured her wrist.

A Nine spokesperson confirmed their departure to Daily Mail Australia, saying: ‘Over the weekend, we were surprised to have one of our new contestant teams depart The Block a few days into filming for the upcoming season.

‘We wish them all the best for the future and we’re excited to cast two new Aussies for the opportunity of a lifetime on The Block. The Block Tree Change will air as scheduled later this year.’

Their exit from The Block will be a major storyline in the first few episodes of the new season, which premieres Sunday, August 7, on Channel Nine and 9Now.

After their exit, Elle shared this photo to Instagram of their suitcases at Melbourne Airport, and wrote: 'Wherever you are in the world, whatever you are doing, family always comes first'

A Sydney schoolboy has gone viral for an electrifying 13-second performance of a 1950s rock-and-roll hit he heard for the first time while watching Top Gun: Maverick.

Robbie Hunt, who attends St Joseph’s College at Hunters Hill, belted out a rendition of Jerry Lee Lewis’ 1957 hit ‘Great Balls of Fire’ in one of the school’s music rooms.

The TikTok clip has amassed a whopping 23 million views and shows the 18-year-old wearing his school uniform and playing piano while singing the first verse of the Jerry Lee Lewis classic.

Robbie Hunt, 18, has gone viral after sharing a 13-second TikTok clip (pictured) where he plays piano while belting out the first verse of Jerry Lee Lewis’ 1957 hit ‘Great Balls of Fire’. The video has amassed 23 million views

Mr Hunt admitted to 2GB host Ben Fordham on Monday that he had never heard the song but was inspired to learn it after watching the Top Gun sequel.

‘I heard the song a couple times and I wanted to learn it but never really took the time to do it,’ Mr Hunt said.

‘I sat down and heard the song and started kind of playing around and I thought, “oh, there it is”.’

Hunt said he did not think the video would receive so much attention and that his new-found fame was ‘pretty crazy’.

‘I just posted it and went to bed,’ Hunt said.

‘When I woke up and my phone kept vibrating, I was like, “that’s very annoying at this time in the morning” and then I went and looked at it.

‘I was like, “Oh, it’s over 500,000 [views]oh that’s a huge number.”

He then went to class and came back to one million views – which has since soared.

Ben Fordham described Hunt as ‘looking like a movie star’ and social media users agree, with some even asking for his hand in marriage.

‘Holy moly, hot and can sing’, one user wrote.

‘He’s Australian OMG I am too, I want you [for real],’ another user wrote.

A third user chimed: ‘So are you single or what?’

‘Who is this kid and when can I marry him,’ another user commented.

Hunt, who has been singing for ‘nearly [his] whole life’ and playing piano since ‘early primary school’, said he wants to pursue music after school and is focused on doing well in his exams.

Hunt noted his family and friends love how the video has gone viral with some calling it ‘hilarious’. However, his grandparents have warned him not to ‘get a big head’ and let the attention distract him from his HSC trials.

‘Obviously music and that stuff is what I want to do with my life but I think the way I can give back is to put my head down and go well in school and sport,’ Hunt said.

The teen is in the midst of preparing for his HSC trials and has already been accepted into the prestigious JMC Arts Academy.

Elon Musk’s dad says he isn’t proud of Tesla founder and explains kids with stepdaughter

Elon Musk’s father has admitted he isn’t proud of his billionaire son and explained why he married and had a baby with his stepdaughter in a candid radio interview.

Errol Musk, 76, called in to the Kyle and Jackie O show on Monday morning for a bizarre 20-minute interview in which he joked he could be Kyle’s biological father.

The father of the Tesla CEO said Elon had ‘surpassed the mark’ of what he deemed success but said the Musk family had ‘been doing a lot of things for a long time’.

‘Your offspring is a genius. He’s worth so much money and has created so many things, you can’t take that away from him. Are you proud?’ Jackie O asked.

‘Nope. You know, we are a family that have been doing a lot of things for a long time, it’s not as if we suddenly started doing something,’ Errol replied.

Kyle and Jackie O were joined by the billionaire’s father for a candid interview on Monday in which Musk revealed why he wasn’t proud of his son

Errol said his billionaire son isn’t as happy as he could be when it came to his success and said he feels as if he is running five years behind schedule.

‘He is frustrated with progress and it’s understandable,’ the 76-year-old said.

‘I know it sounds crazy, but we tend to think like that as a family. He’s 50 now and I still think of him as a little boy. But he’s 50, I mean he’s an old man.’

In reference to recent shirtless photos of his son on a boat in Greece, he said he had been encouraging his son to eat better and take a supplement.

‘Elon is very strongly built but he’s been eating badly,’ he told the hosts.

In a ruthless aside, Errol said he had recommended garcinia cambogia – a supplement that can supposedly aid weight loss without additional exercise or dieting – to his son.

Errol then revealed he never once received a handout from his billionaire son (pictured in May) and that it was his younger brother Kimbal who was his 'pride and joy'

Jackie O asked the South African engineer if he drove a Tesla to which he replied he instead drove a Bentley, Rolls Royce and Mercedes – similar to Kyle’s car collection.

Errol said he had not once received a handout from his billionaire son and that it was Elon’s younger brother Kimbal who was his ‘pride and joy’.

‘We are a very frugal, stingy family. If I want to spend anything I have to answer 100 questions of why,’ he explained.

‘Elon lives a very frugal life. He’s up at work at six o’clock.’

Errol said he worried Elon, who is currently single, will never find a woman who will give up her career to be part of his life, like Kimbal’s wife had done.

Errol was then asked about the relationship he shares with his 34-year-old stepdaughter Jana Bezuidenhout – who he is married to and shares two young children with.

He said he was married to the 34-year-old’s mother for two years in the 1990s and that he hadn’t seen or spoken to Ms Bezuidenhout after the divorce until 2014.

He said it was when she reached out to him during a difficult time that their friendship turned into a romance.

When Kyle said he thought Jana was his biological daughter, Errol interjected.

‘No, it’s not completely normal,’ he said, to which Kyle agreed, despite the 42-year age gap.

Kyle then bizarrely asked what Elon’s penis looked like and if it was circumcised, blaming the personal question on the ‘promiscuous’ Australian women who wanted to know.

‘I’ll get him to send a photo,’ Errol joked.

Kyle concluded the interview by asking the father-of-seven if he could be his father.

‘Maybe I am. Has your mother ever been to South Africa?’ Errol replied with Kyle screaming ‘daddy’ to the Musk patriarch.

Errol Musk revealed his Tesla CEO son Elon Musk (pictured in 2019) had never given him any money and admitted they were a ‘frugal, stingy family’

Last month, the 76-year-old revealed he had had a daughter with Ms Bezuidenhout in 2019, a year after they had their first child, Elliot Rush, now aged five.

He told The Sun he would like to have the children living with him but the last time they visited ‘the kids were starting to get on my nerves.’

He refused to rule out having even more children, however, saying: ‘The only thing we are on Earth for is to reproduce.’

Errol told the publication that his CEO shared the opinions of his three sisters, who were creeped out by the relationship he had with their half-sister.

‘They still don’t like it. They still feel a bit creepy about it, because she’s their sister. Their half-sister,’ Errol said.

Meanwhile, it also emerged Elon had welcomed twins last November with a senior executive at one of his companies, 36-year-old Shivon Zilis.

The twins arrived just a few weeks before Musk had a second child via surrogate with his on-off girlfriend Canadian pop star Claire Boucher, who goes by the alias Grimes.

The father-of-ten also has five children with his first wife, Canadian author Justine Musk.

A sixth child, their first, died of sudden infant death syndrome when they were just ten weeks old in 2002, prompting them to use invitro fertilization.

Then Justine gave birth to twins — Vivian and Griffin — in 2004, followed by triplets — Kai, Saxon and Damian — in 2006.

Their eldest child, Vivian, 18, recently filed a legal request to change her first name to reflect that she is transgender and her last name to signal she doesn’t want ‘to be related to my biological father in any way, shape or form ‘.

Traders, investment bankers, law and mining graduates demanding six-figure salaries after university

Graduates are demanding salaries of up to $350,000 as firms fight to nab the best and brightest workers just weeks after they leave university.

Those completing university as medical practitioners, dentists, software engineers and stock traders can command exorbitant six-figure salaries, and can also expect a bunch of added bonuses and perks.

Australia is facing a dire skills shortage and struggling labor market as the two-year hangover from our strict border closures meant many backpackers fled the country and migrants are slowly returning.

The huge amount of jobs on the market – with fewer people to fill them – has meant the balance of power falls into the hands of jobseekers.

Major recruiters are now expanding their entry-level programs by offering high salaries and perks as smaller players attempt to also attract degree holders, the Australian Financial Review reported.

Jeffrey Duncan, the co-founder of Prosple, a site that advertises graduate roles and internships, said he was shocked at how high graduate salaries were in 2022.

‘I’ve never seen salaries jump so much in one year before,’ he said.

‘Top employers in traditionally high-paying sectors have taken it to a new level in the last 12 months.’

He crunched some numbers with the publication, explaining that the ‘most sought-after graduates’ were commanding $350,000 as traders and $200,000 as investment bankers.

Mr Duncan said salaries for graduate jobs in mining, oil and gas were also nothing to scoff at, paying up to $145,000.

Law graduates could also demand up to $130,000, while those in technology could request $120,000 and management consulting salaries were up to $115,000.

But the most highly-paid graduate roles, besides traders and investment bankers, come in the form of medical practitioners and dentists.

A job search done by Daily Mail Australia showed medical practices regularly offer salaries between $200,000 and $400,000.

For those in the medical field, practices usually require entry-level medical practitioners and dentists to relocate.

The tech industry also provides entry-level roles with six-figure salaries, with software engineers amongst the highest earners.

Data compiled for The Australian showed annual graduate salaries for the top 10 tech firms range from $147,000 to $350,000.

Jane Street tops the list, offering a $350,000 salary for a software engineer graduate, almost six times the median salary of an Australian worker.

Optiver and IMC each pay $250,000 for the same position while Akuna Capital, Atlassian and Google all offer $200,000.

A first year product manager at Microsoft can look forward to a $187,000 salary while software engineer salaries at Canva start from $173,000

Rounding out the top 10 are Amazon, which offers $153,000 for a graduate software engineer, while a graduate business analyst Kearney offers $147,000.

Gym membership, weekly massages, daily breakfast, lunch, an annual company trip, a work-from-home allowance and competitive relocation package are some of the perks in Optiver’s job description for graduate software developer.

The firm also offers internship salary packages of up to $175,000, plus benefits and says the attractive salaries reflect the demands for graduates’ skills and expertise.

BP executive Tony Beaumont gave up $200K job to run Jim’s Cleaning Bayview

Tony Beaumont’s story is not rags to riches but rather riches to (cleaning) rags.

As a high-flying corporate executive he had all the trappings of success including a $200,000 salary, shares in oil giant BP, a company car and 45 staff under him but he gave it all away to scrub floors.

He now owns Jim’s Cleaning Bayview in Sydney’s northern suburbs and says despite taking a ‘financial hit’ he is much happier.

Tony Beaumont was a high-flying corporate executive with oil giant BP but he found the job had taken over his life in a way he didn't like

Tony Beaumont was a high-flying corporate executive with oil giant BP but he found the job had taken over his life in a way he didn’t like

The BP role required him to spend time in Melbourne each month away from his family, leaving behind his wife and two young children in Sydney.

‘My peers were all career-focused, and I had no desire to go to Melbourne ongoing – the corporate culture, drinking until midnight, couldn’t speak to my wife and kids,’ Mr Beaumont told the Sydney Morning Herald.

Mr Beaumont was getting 150 emails a day and was expected to be ‘on’ 24/7.

‘I thought “bugger it”. I had to make a change,’ he said.

As a teenager he cleaned McDonald’s restaurants and thought he might try getting behind a mop again.

‘I wanted to be my own boss,’ Mr Beaumont said.

Mr Beaumont has swapped his corporate suit for casual cleaning attire as the owner of Jim's Cleaning Bayview in Sydney's northern suburbs

‘I didn’t want to manage others anymore. I had had 10 direct and thirty-five indirect people reporting to me. I didn’t want any staff that I had to worry about.’

It seems he has found his niche.

‘I love cleaning as I love to see the happy faces of my clients when they come back to their property and find it perfectly cleaned, freshened up and smelling great!’ he writes on his business website about him.

Mr Beaumont admits he has taken a ‘financial hit’ but says money isn’t everything.

‘I would much rather have a happy family life and watch my kids grow up,’ Mr Beaumont said.

The so-called ‘great resignation’ has been seen many Aussies take advantage of worker shortages to decide on a career change.

Mr Beaumont says the job swap was important to him to spend more time with his young family

Mr Beaumont says the job swap was important to him to spend more time with his young family

With the unemployment rate at four per cent, which is the lowest it has been since 1974, many workers have taken the chance to quit jobs they weren’t happy with.

Nearly 10 per cent of the workforce, 1.3 million people, swapped jobs in the year up until February 2022, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

This was the highest rate of job change in over a decade.

The professional, scientific and technical services areas were particularly notable for an increase in job mobility.

Nearly 40 per cent of managers who left their jobs went into another field, while in sales it was more than 50 per cent of job hoppers who tried something new.

CommSec chief economist Craig James said earlier this year that low unemployment was gave people the opportunity to leave unsatisfactory roles.

‘The great job market shuffle is underway,’ he said.

‘For the first time there are more people that say they are unemployed because they left their lost job rather than those that lost jobs through redundancy, business failure or poor performance.’

Mr Beaumont said even though taking over a cleaning franchise meant he took a 'financial hit' it was worth it

Mr Beaumont said even though taking over a cleaning franchise meant he took a ‘financial hit’ it was worth it

Job availability and mobility may change with rising interest rates expected to slow the economy and borders open once more to let in foreign workers.

With higher unemployment and reduced consumer spending, people may be less willing to leave jobs or take chances on setting up their own businesses.

For Mr Beaumont, however, he says he would make the swap again ‘without a shadow of a doubt’.

Mum is stumped by a bizarre object found in rental property

Mum is stumped by a bizarre object found in her rental property – so do YOU know what it is?

  • A woman sought advice online after finding odd objects in her rental property
  • Ruth shared images of two house-shaped items stuck to the wall
  • At first many thought the product was a broom, mop or dog lead holder
  • But others said the unusual item was instead a key holder missing a few pieces

A woman has been left scratching her head after finding two house-shaped objects stuck to a wall in her new rental.

Seeking advice Ruth shared a series of images to a popular Australian Facebook group – but others were just as confused.

‘I just moved into a new house. The previous owners were VERY organized (far more so than me!) They had places and systems and nooks for everything,’ she wrote.

‘We can’t work out what some of the things they installed are for.’

Ruth said the identical objects looked like ‘little plastic house-shaped’ items placed on the side of the fridge wall.

In the comments many were quick to guess if the item was a broom and umbrella holder or dog lead holder, but both were incorrect.

After some investigation, another person said the products are key holders that once featured two birds perched inside the tiny houses.

Once the purpose was discovered, others asked why the previous tenants only took the bird key holders and not the entire wall device.

Ruth added: ‘There aren’t any birds among the keys they left behind.’

In the kitchen she was also stumped by a strange device stuck underneath one of the cabinets.

Dozens of people were quick to comment, suggesting it could be a cigar cutter with others suggesting it could be a more risky device like a sex toy.

However, others rightly revealed it was an egg cutter, which is used to chop the top off from hard boiled eggs.

Woolworths Senior Manager Continuity and Collectibles, Paul Stibbard said: ‘Since launching Fix-ems earlier this month, we’ve been inspired and impressed by the creativity of our customers who are giving their everyday belongings a bit of extra flair with Fix-ems.

‘As we begin to see many customers complete their collection, there are still dozens of ultra rare Fix-ems in circulation waiting to be collected.

‘We encourage collectors to double check their collection in case they have unknowingly already collected the ultra rare Infinity Gauntlet, and look forward to seeing even more creative ways our customers are using their Fix-Ems.’

The Block 2022: Elle and Joel gave up because the show wasn’t ‘on brand’

The Block quitters Elle and Joel gave up after 48 hours because the show wasn’t ‘on brand’ and the ‘toilet paper was too scratchy’, says host Scott Cam

The Block host Scott Cam has blasted contestants Elle Ferguson and Joel Patfull for their ‘p**s poor’ excuse for quitting the new season.

The couple’s time on the show was over before it really began, after they threw in the towel for ‘family reasons’ after just 48 hours on the building site in country Victoria.

As reported by TV Week, Scott told the other contestants Elle and Joel left because the show wasn’t ‘on brand’ for them as Sydney influencers.

He also said they had complained ‘the toilet paper was too scratchy’.

Elle, 36, a popular fashion influencer, and Joel, 37, a retired AFL player, have disputed this, insisting they quit because of a legitimate family emergency.

The pair downed tools in April – just two days into filming and after the first challenge – after Joel’s mother Trish fractured her neck during a fall at her home in Adelaide.

They initially tried to stay on the show but left after they ‘couldn’t get a definitive answer’ from producers as to whether Joel could ‘come and go’ from the construction site in Gisborne to visit his ailing mother in South Australia.

Elle later posted a cryptic message on Instagram: ‘Wherever you are in the world. Whatever you are doing. Family always comes first.’

Scott wasn’t convinced by this explanation, however, telling TV Week he hadn’t heard anything about Joel’s mother before the couple’s abrupt exit.

‘Of course, family comes first on The Block – we’ve stopped production before when people have had family emergencies,’ he said.

‘And of course, I wasn’t referring to somebody going to visit their sick mother… It was because they’d given us no reason.’

Scott previously said at the Logie Awards that Elle and Joel quitting so soon into the competition was ‘unAustralian’ and ‘p**s poor’.

The couple made the difficult decision to leave the Channel Nine renovation show in April, after Joel’s mum suffered the nasty fall.

After their exit, Elle shared this photo to Instagram of their suitcases at Melbourne Airport, and wrote: 'Wherever you are in the world, whatever you are doing, family always comes first'

Woman finds mold growing inside her car after leaving it covered during the wet season

Cleaning expert is horrified to find the inside of her car COVERED in dangerous mold after leaving it covered during wet weather

  • Sydney cleaning pro Anita Birges was shocked by what she found in her car
  • In a video she said the Mazda hadn’t been touched for months and was covered
  • No air flow and damp conditions made it the perfect mold breeding ground
  • The front seats, steering wheel and floor were all covered in green mold
  • Seeking help online, Anita has no idea how to tackle the situation

An organization expert has been given the shock of her life after finding mold growing inside her husband’s old car.

Anita Birges, who heads Mise en Place Professional Organizing, is on a mission to stop mold from growing in her home, but admitted she had no idea how to remove it from the Mazda.

In a video, Anita can be seen recording herself and her husband standing outside the car then shows the green mold infestation growing on the front seats, steering wheel and carpet.

'This is what happens when you leave a car in hibernation during the wettest year Sydney has ever seen,' Anita wrote online

In a video posted online on Sunday, Anita can be seen recording herself and her husband standing outside the car then shows the green mold infestation growing on the front seats, steering wheel and carpet

‘This is what happens when you leave a car in hibernation during the wettest year Sydney has ever seen,’ Anita wrote online.

The car hadn’t been touched for months and was kept for Anita’s husband’s teenage daughter who is expected to start driving at the end of the year.

‘Little did we know that when we went to move it out of the driveway today that we would get this beautiful surprise,’ Anita continued.

‘To say I was completely shocked is an understatement. I have NEVER seen mold like this in my life‼️’

Since the car was left untouched after months of rain, it became the perfect breeding ground of mold due to a lack of air flow.

Anita is known for sharing how to remove mold from leather jackets, bags, blinds, kids toys and lunchboxes, but was stumped at how to tackle the car.

As mold can significantly impact your health, it’s important to leave the clean to professionals if needed, which is what Anita chose to do.

‘You know me, I’m willing to give anything a red hot go and I love finding a good DIY cleaning solution. But I am not afraid to put my hands up and say that this is way too much for me to handle and I need some expert advice,’ she said.

Seeking help online she asked other social media users for recommendations and if the car is salvageable.

Supercheap Auto’s website warns mold can be a health hazard.

‘If you find mold growing in your vehicle then it is a sign that there is an excess of moisture build up – most often due to a leaky seal around a door or window,’ it says.

‘Not only is mold smelly and unsightly, but it can also be very dangerous. Mold spores can cause severe respiratory issues, especially in children, the elderly and people who suffer from asthma and other existing conditions.

‘For these people, mold can cause nasal stuffiness, throat irritation, coughing or wheezing, eye irritation, or, in some cases, skin irritation.’

How to remove mold from your home:

Anita recommends first cleaning the area with a homemade solution spray followed by a ‘prevention solution’

1. To make the cleaning solution, pour equal parts isopropyl alcohol and warm water into a spray bottle

2. Apply to the area and leave on for 10 minutes

3. Wipe over with microfibre cloth

4. Next make the mold prevention solution using 10 drops clove oil, 10 drops tea tree oil and 100ml white vinegar

5. Spray the solution onto surfaces and area around the home – such as the shower, windowsills, roller blinds, etc.
