Why the Reserve Bank and Philip Lowe has failed Australian people with interest rate, mortgage rises

Media commentator Alan Jones has accused the Reserve Bank of failing the Australian people by being too slow to raise interest rates.

The cash rate remained at a record-low of 0.1 per cent until May this year, even though inflation last year breached the central bank’s 2 to 3 per cent target.

But in May, June, July and August, borrowers have copped 1.75 percentage points of rate rises, taking the RBA cash rate to a six-year high of 1.85 per cent.

With borrowers copping the steepest rate increases since 1994, Jones blasted the Reserve Bank for being too slow to raise interest rates.

Media commentator Alan Jones has accused the Reserve Bank of failing the Australian people by being too slow to raise interest rates

‘The Reserve Bank has failed and the punter knows it,’ he said on his online ADH TV show.

‘Petrol’s up, food prices are up, electricity, gas, the mortgage.

‘This mob have failed in their job – they didn’t move quickly enough.

‘It’s now belting us with the highest, successive interest rate increases in 30 years and the governor says they’ll get inflation back to two to three per cent – quote – overtime – unquote.

‘What the hell does overtime mean?’

Inflation in the year to June surged by 6.1 per cent, which was the fastest pace since 1990 when the one-off effect of the GST introduction in 2000 and 2001 was taken out.

The consumer price index in June last year grew at an annual pace of 3.8 per cent, a level above the RBA’s 2 to 3 per cent target.

Despite that, Reserve Bank of Australia governor Philip Lowe in October 2021 said the cash rate would not increase, from 0.1 per cent, until 2024 when ‘actual inflation is sustainably within the 2 to 3 per cent target range’.

‘The central scenario for the economy is that this condition will not be met before 2024,’ Dr Lowe said.

Warwick McKibbin, who served on the RBA board from 2001 to 2011, last week said the Reserve Bank had made a mistake in delaying rate increases last year, only for Russia’s Ukraine invasion to push average petroleum prices above $2 a liter.

‘I was already arguing for rates to be rising by the middle of last year,’ he told Daily Mail Australia.

‘To make a statement that he had to wait for wages to change, if there was a war in Ukraine, that would cause inflation as well – of course, that’s not on the horizon until it happens.

‘So the uncertainty just isn’t communicated well enough.’

The Reserve Bank and Treasury are both expecting headline inflation later this year to hit a 32-year high of 7.75 per cent and remain outside the RBA’s 2 to 3 per cent target until 2024.

The ANZ back is expecting the cash rate to hit a 10-year high of 3.35 per cent by November with 0.5 percentage rate rises in September, October and Melbourne Cup Day.

All the big four banks are expecting the RBA to raise raises by another 50 basis points in September, which mark the fourth consecutive increase in that size.

The May rate rise was the first since November 2010, ending the era of the record-low 0.1 per cent cash rate that had been in place since late 2020.

The June rate rise of half a percentage point was the biggest since February 2000.

Surging inflation and a series of interest rate rises are making Australians feel gloomy, with the Westpac-Melbourne Institute consumer sentiment index in August falling by another three per cent to a two-year low of 81.2 points.

This was well below the 100 mark where optimists outnumber pessimists, with the monthly reading declining for nine straight months.

Sentiment is 22 per cent weaker compared with a year ago, despite unemployment in June falling to a 48-year low of 3.5 per cent.

Confidence in regional or rural areas fell by five per cent in August to a record low of 72.8 points – the lowest since January 1996 shortly before Labor prime minister Paul Keating lost an upcoming election in a landslide.

What borrowers could be paying by November every month compared with May

$500,000: Up $883 from $1,922 to $2,805

$600,000: Up $1,060 from $2,306 to $3,366

$700,000: Up $1,236 from $2,691 to $3,927

$800,000: Up $1,413 from $3,075 to $4,488

$900,000: Up $1,590 from $3,459 to $5,049

$1,000,000: Up $1,767 from $3,843 to $5,610

Calculations based on the cash rate rising from a record-low of 0.1 per cent in May to 3.35 per cent by November, as predicted by ANZ. Monthly repayments based on a popular variable Commonwealth Bank rate increase from 2.29 per cent to a projected 5.39 per cent

Olivia died Monday at the age of 73 surrounded by family at her California ranch after withdrawing from the public eye as her health deteriorated.

She had a roller-coaster 30-year battle with breast cancer, which she was first diagnosed with in 1992 and which came back in 2013 and 2017.

During her life she was an enthusiastic advocate for breast cancer research, even trekking over 228kms along the Great Wall Of China as a fundraiser to build a cancer and wellness center in Melbourne, where she was largely raised.

In 2020 Rebel embarked on a Year Of Health and lost almost 80lbs – nearly a decade after she starred with Olivia in the Australian comedy A Few Best Men.

After news of Olivia’s death spread around the world, Rebel, her fellow Australian, shared a touching Instagram post in memory of her.

She wrote to Olivia: ‘You were the most gorgeous lady inside and out, you are a true Aussie icon and to play your daughter on screen in A FEW BEST MEN was beyond an honour.

‘Seeing you star in the huge Hollywood blockbuster GREASE with your natural accent was so instrumental to me as a little girl, helping me to believe that it was possible for an Aussie girl to star in huge international musicals.’

Rebel went on to star in major Hollywood musicals herself when she became a scene-stealing presence in the Pitch Perfect films.

In her post about Olivia she recalled: ‘You were the reason I auditioned for my high school production of GREASE at 15 – I was only in the chorus, but it was a start!’

Rebel added: ‘You tried to teach me about health years before I took it seriously. You were so kind to me and it was such a blessing to know you Olivia.

‘I’ll never forget us singing at the piano in our lunch break on set together – what a complete legend you are! I am so sad you are gone Love and Light always to you ONJ, Rebel xoxo’.

Earlier this year Rebel revealed that her staggering 80lbs weight loss was inspired by her desire to eventually become a mother.

For years she has been candid about the fact that she was looking at the prospect of freezing her eggs, which was an influence on her decision to slim down.

Covering People this May, Rebel revealed that a fertility specialist ‘looked me up and down and said: ‘You’d do much better if you were healthier.”

Although her reflex response was to think he was ‘so rude,’ she eventually came to the conclusion the doctor ‘was right. I was carrying around a lot of excess weight.’

She has insisted her fitness journey ‘wasn’t a goal to get to a certain weight. It was just being the healthiest version of myself.’

Rebel, who is 5’3′, has previously credited Vivamayr, a luxury medical center and holistic retreat in Lake Altaussee, Austria, for her astonishing weight loss journey.

Now she has revealed that the process of improving her health involved ‘dealing with the emotional issues that caused me to emotionally eat, and that’s a process. You cry a lot, analyze things. I’d never done that before.’

Ben Affleck lists his Pacific Palisades mansion for $30M…one month after marrying Jennifer Lopez

Ben Affleck has put his Pacific Palisades mansion on the market for $30 million after rumors to have purchased a sprawling home in Beverly Hills with his wife Jennifer Lopez.

He first snapped up the stunning property, complete with seven bedrooms, nine bathrooms, a gym, screening room and spa, for $19.2 million back in 2018.

At the time, he bought the plush home in a bid to be near his ex-wife Jennifer Garner, with whom he remains amicable since their 2015 split, and the three children they share, daughters Violet, 16, Seraphina, 13 and ten- year-old son Samuel.

At the time, Realtor.com described the house as ‘an entertainer’s dream’, with the full listing for the home stating it has a spacious living room with fireplace, formal dining room with butler’s pantry, study with bar and more.

Additionally, it is equipped with a screening room, gym, family room with full bar, temperature controlled walk-in wine cellar and maid’s room.

The decision to list his home comes a month after the 49-year-old Batman star tied the knot with his new wife, 53, during an intimate ceremony in Las Vegas.

While he and J-LO have yet to confirm that they have purchased a property together, moving trucks were recently spotted outside each of their respective homes.

Lopez and Affleck’s rumored new abode was most recently owned by Australian billionaire James Packer, who’s the former fiancé of Mariah Carey. Other previous residents include DeVito and his ex-wife, Matilda alum Rhea Perlman.

DeVito and Perlman sold the seven-bedroom home in 2015 for $28 million to developers Stuart and Stephanie Liner. The Liners then made numerous upgrades to the estate and listed it for $85 million. Packer then bought the property for around $60 million in 2018.

It’s unclear what Lopez and Affleck paid for the house, and there’s a shroud of mystery surrounding the alleged deal, since the house was not even listed for sale when they reportedly bought it.

In fact, real estate experts told TMZ that it hadn’t even been shown off-market, with the exception, potentially, being to Lopez and Affleck.

The house sprawls across 29,000-square-feet, which would allow ample space for the couple’s blended brood of five children.

The Jenny from the Block songstress shares 14-year-old twins Max and Emme with ex-husband Marc Anthony, while the Good Will Hunting star is the father to daughters Violet, 16, Seraphina, 13 and son Samuel, 10, with ex- wife Jennifer Garner.

The massive estate is also said to have many luxury amenities and perks, including an at-home movie theater, a hair salon, a gym, an entertainment room, a wine cellar, a sprawling pool, and even multiple guest houses.

Tracy Grimshaw dramatically stops interview with Olivia Newton John’s grieving niece

Tracy Grimshaw was forced to abruptly end an interview with Olivia Newton-John’s niece after admitting she’d pushed her grieving relative ‘too much’.

The iconic Grease star died peacefully at the age of 73 at her home in southern California on Monday, surrounded by her family and friends.

Tottie Goldsmith, 59, revealed her aunt Olivia’s health had deteriorated in the days leading up to her death after decades of fighting breast cancer and was ‘really skinny and unwell’ in the days before her passing.

The former Neighbors actress broke down when asked what Olivia was ‘most proud of’ after more than eight minutes of intense grilling from Grimshaw.

‘Hang in there, are you OK,’ Grimshaw said after Goldsmith burst into tears.

Goldsmith replied that Newton-John was proud of her 36-year-old daughter Chloe Lattanzi.

‘She loved her girl so much, and her husband, and all of us. And the hospital, the work she did, but Chloe, she loved her girl so much.

‘Chloe is doing it really tough, but she is amazing. I’ve been in touch with her a lot, and she is incredible.’

Grimshaw replied: ‘I’m going to let you go because I think I probably pushed this too much with you.’

However, the A Current Affair host threw in one last question, asking if the family would accept Victorian Premier Dan Andrews’ offer for a state funeral.

‘We will on behalf of the family, but I think Australia needs it, she’s so loved. I think our country needs it, so we are going to accept it, but I won’t cry at that. I’m so sorry, it’s just happened today’ Tottie said as she broke down again.

‘Darling, you can cry. I won’t let you cry anymore, but it’s good to see you, and it’s a terrible day,’ Grimshaw finished the segment.

Earlier in the interview, Tottie revealed Olivia’s final days when the legendary singer’s health had taken a turn for the worse.

‘It’s not a shock, we’ve known how sick she’s been, especially in the last five days,’ she told host Tracy Grimshaw of her passing.

Tottie then went on to reveal her heart-wrenching final moments with Olivia, continuing: ‘I couldn’t get to America in time and I wanted to say goodbye, so I asked [her husband John] if he could hold the phone up to her ear… But he got me on FaceTime so I managed to see her.’

‘I told her all the things I needed to say,’ Tottie continued. ‘She was leaving us… but I feel like she got it.’

Tottie went on to reflect on Olivia’s decades-long battle with cancer.

‘There was one day at the Olivia Newtown John Center and she was really skinny and unwell and I said to her, “Are you afraid of dying”, and she said, “Plonker, I’m not afraid. I’ve done more in my life that I could have ever imagined.”‘

‘She’s struggled with a lot of pain and it’s been a tough road,’ Tottie added.

‘It wasn’t just the cancer that got her. It was other complications and being in a hospital with a very susceptible immune system.’

‘I couldn’t get to America in time and I wanted to say goodbye, so I asked [her husband John] if he could hold the phone up to her ear…’ Tottie continued. ‘But he got me on FaceTime so I managed to see her’

Tottie is best known for her turn in the pop group, Chantoozies, who had hits with their songs Witch Queen, He’s Gonna Step On You Again, Wanna Be Up, and Love the One You’re With in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Her father Brian Goldsmith, a renowned night club owner and restaurateur in Melbourne, died in 2020. Her mother is Olivia’s sister, Rona.

Tottie appeared with her aunt at G’day USA in LA in 2020 – where Olivia candidly spoke about beating her cancer.

‘Gosh, life is a gift and I’ve had an amazing life and I intend to keep going with it and I want to help other people with cancer of course,’ she told DailyMail.com in the January 2020 interview.

‘I have my wellness center in Melbourne and I want to see an end to cancer in my lifetime so other people don’t have to suffer.’

Olivia was first diagnosed with the disease in 1992 but announced she had overcome the cancer in 2013, the year after her Wellness Center first opened, but in May 2017, she was told cancer had metastasized and spread to her bones.

Reflecting on her fight to beat the condition, she admitted: ‘I don’t see it as a battle. I don’t think about it a lot, to be honest.

‘Denial is a really good thing and I’m getting stronger and better all the time! I am doing well!…I am feeling wonderful.’

She also admitted that she had hope for her future, adding: ‘I’m winning over and living with it well and that’s how I see it.’

Newton-John also reflected on her delight at still being remembered for Grease more than four decades after its release.

She confessed: ‘We did something very special together. That movie is still loved.’

She recalled how caring co-star John Travolta was during the filming of the musical romantic film.

Asked about her favorite memory on set, she relied: ‘His kindness to me. When there was one scene in the movie – it was my close up, when Rizzo pulls me forward in the bonfire scene – and in the middle of my take, he stopped it and came over to me and whispered in my ear: “I think you can do better.”

‘So that’s really generous. For an actor to do that for another actor. I wasn’t as experienced as him. He was very nurturing and sweet.’

During that same event, lifelong friend Travolta praised her positive outlook on life, despite her health worries.

He said: ‘Olivia is a survivor and she’s smart and she’s got a lot of life in her and I think she looks at it from the glass half full always and that’s her beautiful, natural approach towards life and I think we all need to do that.’

By the time she got around to filming the Netflix miniseries, Anya admitted she was in bed by 8pm every night, yet struggled with the fact she wanted to be out socializing and partying like her friends in their 20s.

‘It’s: go home, have a bath, get up for work. I sound mental, but that’s what’s working for me right now,’ she added.

Dressed as the titular character, Furiosa, the American star looked worlds away from her usually polished, stylish self while filming in front of a green screen in Sydney’s South on Wednesday, August 3.

Swapping her trademark platinum locks for a messy, matted brown hair-do and tatty clothing, the smiling star was unrecognizable on set as she got stuck in to her latest role.

Her costume consisted of a dirt-stained brown T-shirt which had one sleeve missing and loose trousers. She also wore a green glove, which will be used in post-production to create her character Furiosa’s prosthetic arm.

Anya has enjoyed a stratospheric rise to fame in recent years thanks to her role in Netflix drama The Queens Gambit, as well as films Emma and The Northman, in which she stars alongside Alexander Skarsgård and Nicole Kidman.

Anya arrived in Sydney in May ahead of filming Furiosa, accompanied by her partner Malcolm McRae, who she secretly married in June.

Mad Max: Furiosa is scheduled for release in 2024.

‘We know it’s a sad day for you and so many people, but we wanted to show this photo from quite a few years ago of you, Olivia Newton-John and Tina Arena,’ Natalie said.

‘Can you talk us through those memories, that time, Vanessa?’

Vanessa replied: ‘Both of these women are women I have looked up to since I was a kid… I don’t know. I’m actually very sad about Olivia, to be honest. It’s…’ she trailed off before raising her hand to signal the end of the interview.

‘I don’t particularly want to think about it, because I’ll get very emotional,’ Vanessa said.

‘I just literally had one of the highest endorphins that just happened out there [at the closing ceremony], to being extremely sad coming offstage and checking my phone. I don’t think I’ve really processed it yet,’ she said.

Olivia’s death was announced by her husband John Easterling on Monday on her social media pages. The Australian icon passed away at the age of 73 after battling stage four metastatic breast cancer.

‘I really don’t. Everyone goes through something. We all have something we need to go through in life. This has been my challenge.’

Earlier this year, Olivia said how she tries to keep positive amid her battle, telling Who magazine: ‘I focus on the positive side of things, no matter what the challenge.’

In light of her diagnosis, Olivia said at the time that she doesn’t focus on statistics or time limits.

Channel Seven has been slammed for airing the 2018 miniseries Hopelessly Devoted to You, following the death of Olivia Newton-John at age 73.

The 2018 unauthorized biopic starring Delta Goodrem as a young Olivia didn’t go down well with grieving viewers on Tuesday night, and they were quick to vent on social media.

‘We should be honoring Olivia, not have this horrible wood duck imitation on,’ one disgruntled fan tweeted.

‘Australia doesn’t want to see Delta Goodrem as Olivia, you insensitive idiots,’ quipped a third, before adding: ‘We want to see the original music featuring Olivia.’

‘In the haste to put something on tonight Olivia Newton John related, Channel Seven miss the mark with the Olivia biopic starring Delta Goodrem,’ wrote another.

‘I’d rather watch something ACTUALLY starring Olivia, not someone pretending to be her!’ they added.

Young woman reveals Hinge date’s bizarre text messages inviting her to a ‘rooftop bar’

Young woman reveals date’s bizarre text messages inviting her to a ‘rooftop bar’… but when she Googled the address it was something else entirely

  • A young woman has spoken about her run-in with a strange man on Hinge
  • She connected with ‘Jake’ on the dating app and he asked her out to dinner
  • I have suggested a ‘rooftop bar’ that ‘not many people have heard of’ for it
  • Quinn discovered that what he actually meant was the roof of his apartment
  • She found the conversation to be bizarre and decided not to go

A young woman has shared the bizarre conversation she had with a would-be match on a dating app and how he tried to coax her to his apartment on the very first date.

Quinn Martin, who lives in New York City, took to TikTok on July 21 to share screenshots of a text message exchange she had with a man named ‘Jake’ after meeting on Hinge.

‘There’s a rooftop lounge that just opened that’s BYOB not many people know about that we could try,’ he asked her, which she initially thought was a good idea.

‘A couple of hours before the date I asked for the address because I wanted to see what the place was all about and he sent me the address of an apartment complex,’ she said.

‘Maybe I was missing something, I thought, so I asked him if it was a restaurant and three minutes later he says “haha no” with no other explanation.’

Quinn was starting to believe ‘Jake’ was trying to trick her into coming to his apartment building for a drink on their first date.

‘Turns out that’s exactly what he was doing,’ she said.

Jake wrote to her: ‘Haha I thought I did a good job selling it. The views are pretty sweet but we can hit a bar if you’d rather.’

Quinn explained to her potential match that she didn’t feel comfortable with the proposition and asked if he was even going to tell her it was his place before she got there.

‘Jake’, to his credit, apologized for the forward behavior and that it had ‘come off the wrong way’.

Quinn captioned the footage of her explanation with ‘quite literally escaped my own episode of SVU’.

Her fans on the social media platform were quick to point out that her comments were a huge red flag.

‘I wonder if this has ever worked for him before,’ one woman replied.

‘Lmao that’s bad enough, but he also wanted you to bring your own alcohol to his apartment on the first date,’ said another.

A third added: ‘Do men think we’re just gonna say “yeah see you there” without investigating for our literal safety?’

The Masked Singer: Abbie Chatfield reveals who she DOESN’T want to see on the show

Abbie Chatfield says there is one Aussie celebrity she never wants to see again or appear on her show The Masked Singer

Abbie Chatfield is not a fan of one certain Aussie celebrity.

The reality television star, 27, says she never wants to see celebrity chef Pete Evans beneath one of the costumes on her show The Masked Singer.

‘I narrowly missed having an interaction with him on I’m A Celebrity two years ago when he uploaded that Nazi meme, so I was hoping he wasn’t back,’ she told Yahoo Lifestyle.

‘That was kind of the only person that I thought, “God I hope it isn’t Pete Evans.”‘

The My Kitchen Rules judge, 49, was slated to appear on season seven of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! alongside Abbie.

However, he was dropped by Channel 10 after he posted the Black Sun, a neo-Nazi symbol, to social media, later claiming he didn’t know what it meant.

Celebrity chef Colin Fassnidge took his place at the last second after Pete had commenced his pre-filming quarantine.

The disgraced television chef was a judge on My Kitchen Rules for a decade alongside French chef Manu Feildel.

Seven dropped him from his $800,000 contract in May 2020 after being involved in a string of controversies.

Pete previously claimed COVID-19 was a ‘f**king hoax’ and that the pandemic ‘doesn’t compare to what is happening in the world on a large scale’.

Among his false claims about the pandemic, Pete previously declared he’s immune to coronavirus, and blamed the health crisis on 5G technology.

He also endorsed fellow conspiracy theorist David Icke, a Holocaust denier who was barred entry into Australia last year after protests from the Jewish community.

He was dropped by 15 sponsors and companies in the space of 48 hours in November 2020.

MKR had once been a juggernaut ratings for Seven, but its popularity nosedived in recent years as viewers flocked to Channel Nine’s Married At First Sight instead.

In April, it was announced that home-cooking sensation Nigella Lawson would replace Evans as a judge on a revamped new season of My Kitchen Rules.
