Lake Mead: More human remains found in receding waters

CNN

More human remains have been found in the receding waters of Lake Mead, authorities announced Saturday.

This is the fourth time human remains have been found at Lake Mead National Recreation Area since May.

In the latest incident, park rangers got a call Saturday morning about skeletal remains at Swim Beach area, National Park Service officials said in a statement.

Rangers set up a perimeter at the beach to recover the remains with help from divers from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, according to the Park Service. A coroner was also called to determine the cause of death.

At least three different sets have previously been found at the lake, where water levels have plunged to unprecedented lows amid an unrelenting water crisis in the West.

The previous remains discovered, including a body that was found in a corroding barrel with a gunshot wound, were in advanced stages of decomposition and thus difficult to extract DNA from, officials said.

It’s unclear how long the latest remains found have been in the lake. The homicide division of Las Vegas Metropolitan Police is not currently handling the investigation, Lt. Jason Johansson told CNN.

The police department is, however, leading the investigation into a different body, one found in the barrel on the lake’s Hemenway Harbor on May 1. The body had an obvious gunshot wound and investigators immediately treated it as a homicide investigation, Johansson previously told CNN .

“Anytime you have a body in a barrel, clearly there was somebody else involved,” he said.

Since then, Clark County Coroner Melanie Rouse has preliminarily ruled the cause and manner of death a homicide by gunshot. The remains, dubbed Hemenway Harbor Doe by the coroner’s office, belonged to someone who died in the mid-’70s to early ’80s, according to police.

A second set of remains – found on May 7 at Calville Bay – are believed to belong to someone who was approximately between ages 23 and 37, according to Rouse.

It’s unclear how that person died. The Calville Bay remains are more skeletal than the other two sets, which both still have organ tissue available for examination, Rouse said.

A third set of remains – found at the lake’s Swim Beach on July 25 – are only partial and are still at early stages of examination, according to Rouse.

The lake straddles the border of Nevada and Arizona.

While the grim discoveries in the shrinking lake quickly generated theories of mob involvement, Johansson said those ideas are “mere speculation” at this point in the investigation.

A National Park Service spokesperson told CNN one possible explanation for the remains could be that they belong to people who previously drowned at the lake when water levels used to be high.

At its height in ’80s, Lake Mead – the largest manmade reservoir in the country – was 1,225 feet above sea level. But as the mega-drought persists, water levels have plunged this year to the lowest level since the reservoir was filled in the 1930s.

Lake Mead was filled to just 27% of capacity as of July 18, 2022, according to NASA.

Water levels have plummeted so much that, in addition to several bodies, they have exposed a sunken World War II-era vessel, the Park Service announced in early July.

Court records reveal more about Laurel’s quadruple homicide, suspect’s arrest | News

LAUREL — It took law enforcement less than 24 hours to arrest a suspect after four bodies were found in Laurel.

Jason A. Jones, 42, of Laurel was arrested Friday at 2:30 am in connection to four deaths found within blocks of each other, according to the Nebraska State Patrol. The four victims were found deceased in separate residences in the early-morning hours on Thursday.

Court records obtained by the Daily News have revealed more information about the alleged incident that led up to the victims’ deaths on Thursday.

According to the court records, a 911 call was made by a male around 3:30 am on Thursday after he heard an explosion that occurred at 209 Elm St. Laurel Fire and EMS arrived on the scene and located a woman lying inside the back door of the residence. She was pronounced dead on the scene after lifesaving attempts were unsuccessful.

Court records state that the woman appeared to have suffered two gunshot wounds. A bullet casing was found near her body.

The woman was later identified as Michelle Ebeling, 53, by the Nebraska State Patrol.

A fire also appeared to occur inside the residence after burn marks were observed on the floor, walls and furniture, according to the court records. The smell of smoke and gasoline was also present at the time, indicating that the fire had just occurred.

According to the records, a red fuel container could be observed and a discolored trail on the floor indicated that a fire accelerant was used on the scene.

A search warrant was later issued for Jones’ residence at 206 Elm. St, according to the court records. After entering the house, the Nebraska State Patrol SWAT team found several receipts in a black backpack.

Two receipts showed purchases from Cubby’s Gas Station and Rath’s Mini Mart in Laurel under Jones’ credit card, but it was not stated what he purchased from the gas station and liquor store.

However, another receipt found that a 6-gallon auto shutoff gas can, fuel tank and camping backpack were purchased from a department store in Sioux City, Iowa, under Jones’ credit card.

On Thursday, investigators met with an employee at Rath’s Mini Mart and viewed camera footage, which showed Jones pumping gas into two red gas cans, court records stated.

Shortly after the first incident was reported, a 911 call was made regarding smoke coming from a residence located at 503 Elm St.

Laurel Fire and EMS arrived on the scene and discovered soot damage consistent with fire, court records indicated.

According to the court records, three individuals were found in the residence, and all appeared to have gunshot wounds. The victims were Gene and Janet Twiford, 86 and 85, respectively, and Dana Twiford, 55. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

A firearm was found at the residence, which was purchased by Jones, according to the court records, which also stated that the gunshot wounds were consistent with the firearm found. However, the gunshot wounds to Ebeling appeared to have been shot by a different caliber firearm that has not been located, authorities said.

According to the court records, Jones will be charged with 10 felonies: Four counts of first-degree homicide, two counts of first-degree arson and four counts of use of a firearm to commit a felony.

The Nebraska State Patrol said on Friday that Jones was transported to CHI St. Elizabeth in Lincoln because of serious burn injuries. It is unclear at this time when his first court hearing will be.

It’s been more than a century since tragedy struck the Northeast Nebraska town of 1,000 people, according to Brenda Whalen, a resident of Laurel.

According to Whalen, the last time murder that happened in Laurel was during a 1918 shootout.

“Hopefully that was that century’s big news and this is this century’s big news and it never happens again,” Whalen said.

Whalen, who grew up in Laurel, said she was first aware that something had happened in her hometown when the fire whistle blew at around 3:14 am on Thursday. However, she didn’t hear about the day’s events until around 7:30 am

“It hurts your heart that something like this can happen in your little town because it’s safe here,” Whalen said.

Whalen said that she felt reassured for her safety when she saw the number of law enforcement authorities and firefighters in town. But at the same time, it also alarmed her to see that many law enforcement personnel.

“It still just didn’t feel real,” Whalen said. “It felt like it wasn’t a real event that was really happening here. It just felt like you were in a movie. It’s very hard to comprehend that it even happened yet.”

John Bolduc, superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol, said in a news conference on Friday that more than 60 law enforcement officers were reportedly in town.

Whalen later found out that Jones had been arrested in connection to the quadruple homicide on Friday morning.

According to the state patrol, Jones lived across the street from one of the victims’ homes. He was later arrested at his residence, 206 Elm. St.

“It’s very shocking that the suspect could have been there across the street the whole entire day,” Whalen said, “while the police were present in the neighborhood.”

Whalen said that although she didn’t know Jones, she knew the victims well. She knew the Twifords from church, and Ebeling was a frequent customer in her store, Laurel’s Hometown Market.

“We are a very safe community, tight-knit community; we’ll make it through this,” Whalen said. “It’s not going to be over for a while. And I think learning more about what and why it happened will be helpful to help the community heal.”

Swanbourne: Ginger Owl’s cacti ‘hacked down by vandals’ for second time in just over a year

A Perth cactus which has provided the backdrop for countless photos has been hacked down for the second time in little more than a year.

Staff at Swanbourne fashion boutique Ginger Owl vented their fury after the four-meter tall plant was damaged on Friday night.

“Our beautiful cactus has been targeted again… one year on but this time it’s worse,” a post from the business on Instagram read.

Your local paper, whenever you want it.

“Two low-life a**holes decided to hack, steal and vandalize our beautiful plant just after midnight (Friday).”

The cactus was planted over three years ago and at the time was barely one meter tall.

It has now quadrupled in size since then – and garnered quite the following.

“This cactus has become iconic. The love and attention it gets is unbelievable,” Ginger Owl’s post read.

“We have witnessed wedding parties in front of it, bloggers, brides and grooms, fashion labels, influencers and the general public.

“It was the perfect backdrop and specimen.”

Staff rounded out the post by saying the plant needed to be protected from “low-lifes” who think “they can hack an arm or two off it”.

It is understood that no official complaint has been made to the police. Ginger Owl management were sought for comment.

MORE:

In July last year police were called to investigate after a thief was caught on camera carving off a large branch from the plant.

Police said a man got out of a car on North Street with a machete before getting to work.

“He just gets out a machete and he’s gone,” Senior Sergeant Peter Gilmour said at the time.

“In my time in the western suburbs I’ve investigated wildflowers and rose bushes being stolen, so it’s quite common here.”

Fourth Muslim man murdered in New Mexico in ‘targeted killings’

Aug 6 (Reuters) – Police in New Mexico and federal agencies were probing the murders of four Muslim men to determine if the killings, the latest of which happened on Friday evening, were linked while the state’s governor described them as “targeted killings.”

Albuquerque Police Chief Harold Medina told reporters on Saturday that a “young man who is part of the Muslim community was murdered.”

The victim’s name and the circumstances of the murder were not disclosed. In the previous three cases, the victims were ambushed and shot without warning, police said.

Medina said the killing was possibly linked to the previous three murders.

Police in New Mexico had said earlier that the other three Muslim men murdered in the state’s largest city in the past nine months appeared to have been targeted for their religion and race. read more

“The targeted killings of Muslim residents of Albuquerque is deeply angering and wholly intolerable,” New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham tweeted late on Saturday. She also said she was deploying extra state police officers to Albuquerque to assist in the investigation.

Two of those murdered men were members of the same mosque, who were shot dead in Albuquerque in late July and early August. Police said there was a “strong possibility” their deaths were connected to the November killing of an Afghan immigrant.

Muhammad Afzaal Hussain, 27, a planning director for the city of Espanola who came to the United States from Pakistan, was shot dead on Monday outside his Albuquerque apartment complex while Aftab Hussein, 41, was found dead of gunshot wounds on July 26 near the Albuquerque’s international district.

Those deaths are likely linked to the shooting of 62-year-old Mohammad Ahmadi in a parking lot by a halal supermarket and cafe on Nov. 7 last year, police said.

New Mexico State Police, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the US Marshals Service are among several agencies involved in probing the murders.

Man accused of mass shooting in rural Queensland is 59-year-old Darryl Young

The man accused of murder after mass shooting in rural Queensland has been revealed to be local farmer Darryl Young.

The 59-year-old has been charged with murdering his neighbours, Mervyn Schwarz, 71, his wife Maree, 59, and her son Graham Tighe, 35.

The neighbors had a long-running dispute about boundary lines at their properties, in the rural town of Bogie, police say.

It is alleged that Young invited his neighbors to meet him at the edge of his Shannonvale Road property on Thursday.

Young is accused of then shooting the couple, and Maree’s sons Graham and Ross Tighe, ‘execution-style’ with a rifle.

On Friday, Young was charged with three counts of murder and one count of attempted murder.

He is due to appear in the Proserpine Magistrates Court on Monday.

Acting Superintendent Tom Armitt said the property where the shooting allegedly took place was “tens of thousands of acres”.

“It’s actually a 45-minute drive between the neighbours,” he said.

“At the crime scene, which is at the front gate of one of the premises, it is a 3km drive between the gate and the house at that location.”

Armitt said because Ross had been so far from the crime scene, and it was unclear whether the alleged gunman was still at large, police were cautious in their approach to the property.

“At that time, not knowing whether the armed offender was present or not, putting their lives in grave danger, especially when the report was that the people had been shot with a rifle,” Armitt said.

“So that was slow and meticulous work and extremely brave of the officers who were involved at that time.”

The charges come as new tragic details emerge that Graham’s partner Lucy had only recently given birth to their second child.

Graham’s uncle, Greg Austen, told 7NEWS the father had only spent a few days with the newborn before the baby was taken to Brisbane to visit Lucy’s mother.

“It’s just devastating shock that things can happen so quickly in the blink of an eye and ruin so many lives so quickly,” he said.

Lucy had been stuck in Brisbane, as she was unable to fly on commercial airlines weeks after giving birth.

On Friday, the charity Angel Flight arranged a charter for Lucy and her two young children to fly home to north Queensland.

Ross was initially in a critical condition but since undergoing multiple emergency surgeries is now reported as serious but stable.

“He was able to speak to us overnight and provide us details of what occurred at the incident yesterday morning,” Armitt said.

“And detectives will be speaking to him again this morning.”

Community in shock

Merv and Maree are being remembered as a “lovely, hardworking” family as loved ones try to make sense of the tragedy.

“We’re lucky we still have Ross with us,” Austen told 7NEWS.

“To see the trauma that would have unfolded in front of him and then be able to go that far to raise the alarm, it’s a mighty effort.”

Graham leaves behind two young children, with partner Lucy stuck in Brisbane, unable to fly on commercial airlines as she gave birth a few weeks ago.

7NEWS understands after desperate efforts from family and friends, a charity will put Lucy and her children on a charter flight home.

Whitsunday Regional councilor Jan Clifford said the tight-knit community would be devastated.

“To my knowledge, nothing like this has ever happened in the Whitsunday region before,” Clifford said.

“We are all deeply saddened by the tragedy.”

Clifford said the incident was bound to have a big effect on the tiny community of Bogie, which has a population of 207 according to the latest census data.

“It’s a little village. Everyone will know everyone… It’s just awful.”

One woman working in nearby Collinsville said the entire community was in shock.

“The whole town is a bit rattled that something like that could happen here,” she told AAP.

“It’s a small town, everyone knows everyone.”

Queensland Police reveal victims organized to meet with alleged gunman before mass shooting killed three people in Bogie

Queensland Police have revealed new details about the shooting in a rural town that left three members of the same family dead and another critically injured.

Married couple Mervyn and Maree Schwarz, 71 and 59, and their son Graham Tinge, 35, were gunned down at their cattle farm property in Bogie, about 35 minutes from Bowen in the state’s north on Thursday morning.

Their other son, Ross, was shot in the abdomen and bleeding heavily but managed to flee the scene in a ute where he alerted police about the shooting.

Mackay Detective Inspector Tom Armitt revealed in press conference on Friday that the alleged offender and the victims had organized to meet the night before the shooting.

“What we do know is that all parties are neighbours, some conversation has occurred between the parties and resulted in a meeting up at the parties’ boundary line earlier that morning when the incident occurred,” he said.

“We understand that there was a conversation the night before that was the reason they met the next morning.

“What I can say is that there was an invitation for them to go there and discuss.”

Police said the distance from the properties is a long 45-minute drive and is a three kilometer drive from the gate to the front of the house.

Ross underwent surgery at MacKay Base Hospital on Thursday night and has been well enough to speak with police.

A 59-year-old male neighbor of the Schwarz’s is being held in custody with charges expected to be laid late on Friday afternoon.

“He will be remaining in our custody and we expect to lay criminal charges in relation to the matter some time later on this afternoon,” Superintendent Armitt said.

He also revealed the Schwarzs’ had purchased the property “some time” in the last 12 months while the 59-year-old was a long-term resident of the area.

Police took five people who were on the property at the time of the incident into custody overnight with all but the alleged shooter released.

Emergency services received a call around 9am on Thursday by the lone survivor who had driven about 40 kilometers away from the crime scene.

Superintendent Tom Armitt said there was confusion about where the shooting had occurred with the call coming from a far distance away but praised the officers who placed themselves in danger during the response.

“At that particular time we had a report that three persons had been shot. I believed that they had been killed but we needed confirmation on that,” he said.

“At that particular time whilst we had made requests of our CERT team to come and make clearances and armed clearances at those properties we needed to push forward with police to determine the safety of the people on the ground.

“We had a small team of police who drove forward into the crime scene at that time not knowing if the armed offender was present putting their lives at grave danger especially when the report was that people had been shot with a rifle.

“They were in danger of being shot at any distance whilst approaching the crime scene so that was slow and meticulous work and extremely brave from the officers who were involved at that time.”

Police are yet to determine a motive for the incident with investigations into the incident ongoing.

Anyone in the area with information who has knowledge, information of any issues in the area, or spoke with either family, should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

New Mexico parade injuries: Driver of car accused of DWI

CNN

An SUV driver who on Thursday evening allegedly struck people along a parade route in Gallup, New Mexico, has been accused of aggravated DWI and other charges, according to the New Mexico State Police.

In total, 15 people with non-life-threatening injuries were transported to hospitals from the Gallup Intertribal Ceremonial Centennial Celebration event, state police officials said Friday in a news release.

Gallup police were told several people in a Chevrolet Tahoe parked along the route of the Ceremonial Night Parade were drinking alcohol, according to state police. As officers approached the SUV, the driver took off and both officers were injured, state police said.

“The Tahoe continued eastbound on West Coal Avenue toward parade participants while officers attempted to move spectators out of the Tahoe’s path,” the release says.

A video taken by witness Sean Justice shows a group of people performing in the street when the crowd burst into screams, with people leaping up and rushing in the opposite direction of what appears to be a moving SUV.

A statement from Gallup city officials said the SUV hit pedestrians, vehicles and a business before it was stopped.

Another video captured by witness Keisha Joe shows what appears to be the SUV which was driven through the parade. In front of the SUV is a damaged car on the sidewalk, its front door crumpled in.

A 33-year-old man who was allegedly driving was arrested and is accused of aggravated DWI, one count of accident involving injury/great bodily harm, 14 counts of accident involving injury/not great bodily harm and other charges, according to state police . The man, a resident of Pinedale, had a suspended/revoked license, the news release said.

Authorities said there is no evidence of a hate crime.

The two male passengers in the SUV were taken to the Gallup Detox Center.

Police cordon off the site where an SUV driver was taken into custody after people were struck Thursday night at a parade.

“We are deeply saddened by this incident. We encourage everyone to attend the remaining Gallup Inter-Tribal Ceremonial events,” city officials said. “The city is working with multiple agencies to ensure safety is of the highest priority. We will begin healing together in this celebration of cultural connections.”

The Gallup Intertribal Ceremony will continue as scheduled. Thursday was the first night of the 11-day-long event. Another parade is scheduled for August 13, according to the event website.

“We’re incredibly saddened and shocked by the life-threatening and traumatic incident that took place last night when a vehicle drove through the Ceremonial Night Parade,” Melissa Sanchez, the executive director of the New Mexico Tourism Department Intertribal Ceremonial Office, said in the release. “We await as law enforcement continues to gather the facts regarding this ongoing situation. Right now, safety is the top priority for community members, participants, travelers, and event staff and volunteers.”

Gallup is in northwestern New Mexico, a little more than a two-hour drive west of Albuquerque. It is home to the Navajo Regional Office Bureau of Indian Affairs.

“We are grateful that no lives were lost due to this senseless act by a few individuals. The perpetrators must be held accountable to the fullest extent. My family and I, as well as many of our Navajo people, witnessed the tragic events firsthand,” Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez said in a news release. “We saw children who were shedding tears and people shaking with fear and we did our best to comfort them and let them know that everything would be OK.”

Navajo Nation Council Speaker Seth Damon released a statement saying, “The Navajo Nation stands with resilience against any acts of violence and sends prayers of protection to those affected. This was a traumatic and triggering event for many, especially for our youth, elders, and our veterans who acted quickly.”

“Hold Gallup in your prayers tonight as we come together in faith and strength for one another. May the Creator and Holy People bless you all tonight as we move forward together,” he said.

Yaser Said’s ex-wife slams ‘devil’ father for ‘honor killings’ of daughters

A Texas man on trial for murdering his two daughters in “honor killings” because they were dating American boys was called the “devil” in court Thursday by the girls’ mother, who detailed 15 years of abuse during their marriage.

Patricia Owens, Yaser Said’s former wife, had not seen him since New Year’s Day of 2008 — when he took their daughters Amina, 18, and Sarah, 17, to dinner and insisted on going alone so they could talk.

Instead, prosecutors say, Said shot the girls multiple times in the cab he drove and left them for dead outside a hotel in suburban Irving.

Owens testified that she and the girls had just returned to their home in Lewisville, Texas, from Oklahoma, where they had gone to get away from Said. She testified she knew the girls were dating — and that Said would have become enraged if he knew about it.

“I just thought he would, like, punish them, like take their phone away and stuff like that,” she said.

But long before 2008, Owens testified, she and her daughters were abused by Said. She told the jury how she married Said in 1987, when she was just 15 and he was 29. She gave birth to Amina, Sarah, and their brother Islam in the first three years of their marriage.

Patricia Owens called her ex-husband Yaser Said the "evil" for allegedly murdering their two daughters at his trial in Dallas, Texas on August 4, 2022.

Owens claimed she left Said multiple times during the marriage and described him as controlling.

In 1998, while living near Waco, Texas, Owens filed a report with the Hill County Sheriff’s Office accusing Said of sexually abusing the two girls. She took all three children and left him for months, before returning and telling the girls to recant their story.

“I felt scared not to go back,” Owens explained. “Yaser was abusive.”

In late 2007, Owens and her daughters fled again to Tulsa, Okla., after the girls feared their father would kill them if he learned they had both become engaged to their boyfriends. Owens said Said had previously threatened Amina with a gun.

The mother and daughters returned to Texas to finish their schooling on the promise that Said would leave the family home. Even then, Amina refused to go back to the house, fearful of the repercussions.

When prosecutors asked Owens if she knew what would happen when they returned, she replied, “Part of me did. Part of me didn’t.”

Earlier this week, prosecutors played a recording of a 911 call placed by Sarah after she had been shot, but was still alive.

“My father shot me. I’m dying,” Sarah said in the recording.

Said, who was arrested in August 2020 after more than a decade on the lam, has maintained his innocence and his lawyer has argued that he is being targeted by law enforcement for being Muslim in a post-Sept. 11 world.

He will serve an automatic life sentence if he’s found guilty.
