Tyson Fury retires, Fury vs Anthony Joshua, Oleksander Usyk, Derek Chisora, news,

WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury said he is retiring from boxing on his 34th birthday on Friday, having previously performed a number of U-turns over his future in the sport.

“Massive thanks to everyone who had an input in my career over the years & after long hard conversations I’ve finally decided to walk away & on my 34th birthday I say Bon voyage,” Fury posted on Twitter.

The announcement has been greeted with skepticism as Fury has previously stated his intention to withdraw only to return to the ring.

He was expected to fight the winner of Oleksandr Usyk’s rematch with Anthony Joshua on August 20 for the chance to unify the world heavyweight titles.

As recently as Tuesday, Fury suggested his most recent spell in retirement was over in order to set up a trilogy fight against Derek Chisora and even claimed to have appointed a new trainer in Isaac Lowe.

However, he has now announced the intention to retire undefeated with a record of 32 wins and one draw from 33 bouts.

Fury went onto thank his wife, promoter Frank Warren and a series of other training partners and television companies who have bought rights to his fights over the years.

The Brit stated ahead of his win over Dillian Whyte in March that he would retire after that fight as he has “150 million in the bank and nothing to prove.”

However, earlier this week, Warren had cast doubt on the suggestion Fury will not fight again.

“I think what’s going to happen is, see what happens on 20 (August) and the outcome of that, and that’ll determine what he intends to do in the future,’ Warren told talk SPORT.

“I think he will (return), because he’s a fighting man and he misses it. That’s what he does, he wants to fight.”

Earlier this month, Will revealed he had ‘no plans’ to reach out to Will Smith after the actor issued a formal apology for slapping him at the Academy Awards.

The Fresh Prince of Bel Air actor, 53, said via Instagram that he had taken the last four months to ‘work’ on himself after hitting Chris at the Oscars in March.

A source has since reported the comedian isn’t currently ready to rekindle a friendship and said that Will’s apology was simply a bid to repair his public image.

An insider told ET Online: ‘Chris has no plans to reach out to Will’, before adding, ‘He [Will] needs the public’s forgiveness, not Chris’.’

Taking to Instagram, the King Richard actor said in his apology: ‘I’ve reached out to Chris and the message that came back is that he’s not ready to talk when he is, he will reach out.

‘So I will say to you, Chris, I apologize to you. My behavior was unacceptable and I’m here whenever you’re ready to talk.’ He also apologized to Chris’ mother and his entire family.

Understanding McLaren’s motivation to sign Piastri

Daniel Ricciardo

It wasn’t so long ago that McLaren was in a cash crisis, but it is now apparently prepared to spend millions to replace Daniel Ricciardo with Oscar Piastri for the 2023 Formula 1 season.

Sources revealed to Speedcafe.com earlier this week that severe negotiations between Ricciardo and McLaren had opened at USD 21 million.

The Australian holds a valid agreement for 2023, and it is understood that he alone has the right to terminate that early – something of an oversight on the team’s side when it comes to that particular contract.

To clear the path for his replacement, McLaren must therefore reach a settlement with Ricciardo.

The 33-year-old has not delivered what was predicted prior to his arrival in Woking, with Lando Norris having, for the most part, out-performed him since the start of 2021.

Aside from performance, over which there are never guarantees when hiring any driver (evidenced by Ricciardo himself in this instance), another motivating factor on McLaren’s side is likely to be financial.

It’s reasonable to suggest that part of the motivation for Zak Brown, McLaren Racing’s CEO, to change his driver line-up is to reduce the wage bill for a similar return in terms of on-track performance.

Ricciardo is no longer one of the sport’s highest earners, but by the same token, why spend more than one has to for the desired result?

By the same token, there’s no logical reason for the eight-time grand prix winner to settle for less than what his 2023 earnings would be. It can be reasonably assumed, then, the USD 21 million is somewhere north of that figure.

There are suggestions an accelerator exists in Ricciardo’s contract that would see his salary increase next year, further motivating Brown, though as that specific information is contained in a confidential contract, it’s impossible to validate such claims.

Paying out Ricciardo therefore only makes sense for McLaren if it’s saving money, or netting significantly better results to ensure greater prize money and to increase its attractiveness to sponsors.

The latter is something of a long shot given the gulf that currently exists to the likes of Ferrari and Red Bull, and so it’s most likely the former is the key motivator.

We can therefore discern that the intent is that, whatever it spends on the drivers at the end of next year, after forking out a settlement plus any costs associated with the acquisition of a new driver, must be less than it was otherwise going to.

In Piastri’s case, there could be significant additional costs.

There is a strong probability that Alpine will look to recover what it’s spent in running a series of Formula 1 tests for last year’s Formula 2 champion.

Otmar Szafnauer, Team Principal for the Enstone squad, has mooted potential legal action in the high court if Piastri does not drive for his team next season.

Figures ranging from USD 15 million to USD 25 million have been quoted to Speedcafe.com with regards to the figure Alpine will pursue.

That sum would presumably be sought from whichever team he ends up joining since it’s unlikely the Melburnian himself would be able to stump up that sort of money.

Should Ricciardo remain firm on his termination value, and Alpine get top dollar, that could put McLaren on the hook for as much as USD 46 million, and that’s without considering any salary aspect it might have agreed with Piastri.

One can understand the intent for Brown to reduce the business’ cost base, given it’s in something of a rebuilding phase, with significant investment taking place off track (a new wind tunnel and simulator), not to mention that McLaren Group has faced some financial challenges in the recent past.

It came perilously close to running out of cash in July 2020 before the injection of a GBP 150 million loan courtesy of the National Bank of Bahrain, which has links to Mumtalakat, the sovereign wealth fund of Bahrain and also McLaren’s largest shareholder.

That came after the British Government rejected a request for a loan in May 2020, which prompted the company to consider mortgaging its historic car collection which was, at the time, estimated to be worth in the region of GBP 200 million.

In December 2020, a 15 percent stake in McLaren Racing was sold to a consortium led by MSP Sports Capital for GBP 185 million, that slice potentially rising to a maximum of 33 percent by the end of this year.

It’s a deal that, at the time, put a valuation on the racing operation of GBP 560 million.

Since then, the McLaren Campus, which houses the company’s Formula 1 operation within the McLaren Technology Centre, has been sold for GBP 170 million as part of a lease-back agreement with Global Net Lease in April 2021.

Finances have now seemingly stabilized, but McLaren has divested both assets and equity in the process, while the Group is on a seemingly perennial round of capital raising to support the Automotive side of the company.

A potential bill in the region of USD 50 million to hire a new driver will therefore be noticed.

Even in the best-case scenario, and Ricciardo’s settlement is reduced and there is nothing payable for Piastri beyond a salary, it’s difficult to imagine a scenario where that total figure is less than it would have paid out in 2023 without the current kerfuffle.

That would appear to defy the financial motivation for the move, leaving only a disruptive and expensive way to procure a new driver without any guarantee of returns.

It’s a seemingly high-risk strategy, even in F1 terms.

2023 Volvo Embla: XC90 electric successor leaked

Volvo’s first new XC90 in eight years has surfaced early in patent renderings – but it won’t be called XC90, and it isn’t expected to be available with petrol engines.

The all-electric successor to the current Volvo XC90 – expected to wear the 2023 Volvo Embla badge – has made an early debut in patent images, ahead of its global unveiling due before the end of this year.

Pictured in patents posted to Instagram by Kurdistan Automotive Blog, Volvo’s new large SUV blends elements of last year’s electric Concept Recharge, with the proportions and key design cues of today’s petrol XC90.

The Concept Recharge similarities are evident in the slim headlight design, sharp shoulder line, and lower front bumper design – but the concept’s sloping roof has been stretched upwards to boost headroom in all three rows.

Elements familiar to current XC90 owners include the new car’s overall proportions, and the shape of its side windows.

The one-piece vertical tail-lights signature to the XC90 range since the first generation launched in 2004 have been ditched, in favor of a C-shaped lower sections and vertical LED strips on either side of the rear window.

The patents don’t provide a look inside the Embla’s cabin, however the Concept Recharge (below) previewed a minimalist look with a slim instrument panel mounted to the steering column, and a large Tesla-style center touchscreen.

Volvo recently announced a deal to use Unreal Engine software from Epic Games – developers of the popular Fortnite video game – for the infotainment and instrument cluster software in the Embla, driven by more powerful processors than past Volvo models.

Few details of the new Embla – the name it’s widely tipped to wear, based on trademarks and comments from Volvo’s previous CEO – have been revealed to date.

The new large SUV is expected to ride a new platform known as SPA2 (Scalable Product Architecture), and is slated to offer electric power only.

Previous Volvo CEO Hakan Samuelsson told Automotive News in February the new electric SUV will be sold alongside the existing XC90, as demand for traditional petrol-powered cars – and plug-in hybrids – remains strong in the US and China, among other regions.

Above: The current Volvo XC90.

The new 2023 Volvo Embla is slated to be revealed before the end of this year, ahead of an overseas launch sometime next year. Australian showroom arrivals are unlikely to begin before the second half of next year.

The car will be built in Volvo’s factory in Charleston, South Carolina, alongside the current S60 sedan, and the Polestar 3, a twin to the Embla from Volvo’s electric spin-off brand Polestar.

However, it’s unclear if the car will also be built in China, given the Polestar 3 will be built there for Australia, as well as China – and an increasing number of Volvo models in Australia, including the S60, are switching to Chinese production where available.

Google employees express concern about lay-offs

Google executives are telling their employees to shape up or ship out, warning that lay-offs are coming if results don’t meet expectations.

Employees who work in the Google Cloud sales department said that senior leadership told them that there will be an “overall examination of sales productivity and productivity in general.”

If third quarter results “don’t look up, [then] there will be blood on the streets,” according to a message conveyed to the sales team. The warning was first reported by Insider.

Employees told the news site that they are fearful of lay-offs after the company quietly extended its hiring freeze this month without making an announcement, the New York Post reports.

The Post you have sought comment from Google.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai told his employees in an all hands meeting late last month that they needed to improve their focus and productivity due to fierce economic headwinds that have forced widespread belt-tightening all throughout the technology sector.

Mr Pichai said that he wanted to solicit ideas from his employees on how to get “better results faster.”

“It’s clear we are facing a challenging macro environment with more uncertainty ahead,” Mr Pichai said.

“There are real concerns that our productivity as a whole is not where it needs to be for the head count we have.”

The search engine also announced a two-week hiring freeze last month, but so far it has not reversed its decision — prompting employees to fear the worst, according to Insider.

Since Mr Pichai’s comments, “everyone has been talking about the company tightening its belt,” one employee told Insider.

Google isn’t the only tech company that has put its employees on notice.

Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO and founder of Facebook’s parent company Meta, blamed “one of the worst downturns that we’ve seen in recent history” for a series of cost-cutting measures, including a hiring freeze.

Mr Zuckerberg also made it clear that the company will part ways with employees who do not perform up to par.

“Realistically, there are probably a bunch of people at the company who shouldn’t be here,” Zuckerberg told an all hands meeting in late June.

Facebook’s social media rival Twitter recently rescinded a job offer to a Palo Alto man as part of the San Francisco-based company’s cutting back on hiring.

Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal informed employees of the hiring pause in a message earlier this year, citing a recent lag on growth and revenue targets.

The company has been thrown into turmoil since Tesla CEO Elon Musk agreed to buy it for $US44 billion — only to back out of the deal. Twitter is now suing Musk in an effort to enforce the terms of the agreement.

The merged Google Meet app lets you host group Spotify and YouTube sessions

Google’s merger of Meet and Duo may be confusing, but it should deliver some useful upgrades in the bargain. The company has added a live sharing beta feature that lets users of the revamped Meet share Spotify and YouTube streams during chats. You can play games like One Mobile and kahoot, too. The functionality will sound familiar if you’ve tried SharePlay, but you can’t use Spotify or YouTube with Apple’s media feature.

The Meet upgrades include scheduled recurring meetings, virtual backgrounds and in-meeting chats. As with the Meet features coming to Duo, live sharing has been rolling out over recent weeks. The rebranding of Duo as Meet will take place throughout August for mobile devices, and is coming later for everyone else.

Google has pitched the Meet-and-Duo union as an adaptation to the modern realities of video calls. Live sharing clearly reflects this. I’s an acknowledgment that many people use video chats as social spaces, particularly when remote hangouts are more common than they were before the pandemic.

The iconic Grease star died peacefully at the age of 73 at her home in southern California on Monday, surrounded by her family and friends.

Having grown up amid the glitz and glam of Hollywood, away from the camera the two women cemented their friendship as they bonded over their love of nature and horses.

Writing for The Mirror, Susan recalled the pair meeting as teens and growing a lifelong friendship, remarking that the film star ‘filled my heart and head with pride.’

Detailing Olivia’s rise to fame thanks to her role as Sandy in Grease, Susan said: ‘I was with her through the making, and at the premiere in London and when our stretch limo was mobbed, she was staggered and playfully humbled by all the amazing attention. Did she ever know how beautiful she was? No, never, and that was part of her magic.’

She went on to say that while Olivia enjoyed the swanky premieres, parties and lunches that fame brought, the Australian beauty felt happiest when she was surrounded by horses, calling Susan’s stud farm her ‘sanctuary’.

The TV star went on to remember several funny moments they shared throughout the years, including a hilarious moment that she struggled to control Olivia’s Shetland ponies – the Grease star filmed and Susan still has the ‘precious video’.

She added that despite the pair living far apart, they were ‘always there for one other’ no matter what, through the ‘good times and bad’.

Speaking of when Olivia was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992, Susan told how Olivia had a ‘sort of acceptance’, adding that the star ‘knew’ that she could use her battle as a ‘platform to help others’, and had ‘ no seed of doubt’ that she’d survive it.

Indeed Olivia did go on to survive, having battled the disease twice more before finally succumbing to it earlier this month.

Detailing their last phone call, Susan said: ‘We spoke a few weeks ago and had the longest talk about times past and present, laughed a lot and I worried that it might have been too tiring, but she insisted not.

‘She seemed to have things she wanted to get out and share and I will always treasure what was devastatingly to be our last conversation.’

North Melbourne CEO’s job is “bordering on untenable”

North Melbourne CEO Ben Amarfio’s job at the club is “bordering on untenable”, according to SEN Chief Sports Reporter Sam Edmund.

Amarfio and the club in general have been in the spotlight all season following the parting of ways with former coach David Noble amid a 2022 campaign which so far has only seen two wins.

The club is currently dealing exclusively with four-time premiership coach Alastair Clarkson as it looks to land the coaching great as the successor to Noble, a process that is largely being spearheaded by President Sonja Hood.

Edmund is reporting that if Amarfio remains in the job once the club’s new coach is appointed, they will struggle to attract “high-end” football department figures.

“I’ve been told that Ben Amarfio’s position is bordering on untenable at the moment and that’s all intertwined with Alastiar Clarkson or whoever comes on as coach,” he said on SEN’s Crunch Time.

“They will struggle to attract the high-end football department personnel while Ben (Amarfio) remains in that position.

“North Melbourne have some big announcements coming up, next week we think Mazada is going to re-sign with the club.

“There aren’t many football CEOs out there and North Melbourne are actively hunting in this space at the moment.

“I think Ben Amarfio might use this opportunity to say ‘I’ve done my bit and I’m off to pursue other opportunities’.”

Amarfio has been CEO at North Melbourne since late 2019, taking over from Carl Dilena who had previously held the role for nearly seven years.
