Klonoa: Phantasy Reverie Series – 4 Essential Beginners Tips

Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series - 4 essential beginners tipsKlonoa: Phantasy Reverie Series bundles the original and sequel into one remastered package. Whether you’re new to the 2.5D platformer, returning after many years, or a bit rusty on the basics, we have four beginner tips for you. Equip yourself with these tips, and you’ll be on your way to defeating Ghadeus, the king of Sorrow and any bouncing bad guy who gets in your way.

Know Your Enemy

The ancient Chinese general Sun Zhu once wrote, “know thy enemy, and know yourself”. While Klonoa doesn’t require such leaps of military genius, having a firm grasp of the various enemy types will stand you in good stead, especially if you’re attempting to speed run visions (levels). Each buoyant enemy holds valuable properties to help you scale heights and dangerous drops. In contrast, others can open paths yet unexplored with a bang! Knowing how to use these creatures to your advantage will also help unlock many collectables that require extra effort.

In Klonoa, the enemy aren't there to simply be beating. They are a thing to be used to your advantage

In Klonoa, the enemy aren’t there to simply be beating. They are a thing to be used to your advantage.

The common enemy is the round creatures that’ll walk forward and backwards. These aren’t dangerous unless they have armor plating. You’ll want to use these guys to jump high for gems and collectables or as cannonballs to wipe out other enemies. Often you’ll have to jump to much higher ledges, and this is where the second enemy type comes in. These green birds fly upwards and downwards in formation, so time your jump carefully. Lastly, dog-like bombs can blast blockages, but be careful! Some have shorter fuses than others. You’ll encounter other creatures, but their usage is pretty apparent when you meet them.

Popping The Clock

You’ll come across large red clocks floating in bubbles at each level. These are not to be ignored and will make your experience much smoother. Pop these bubbles with an enemy or wind bullet, and your current progress will be saved. You will die a lot in Klonoa, whether through ill-timed jumps, eagerness to rush through a level or allowing an enemy to get too close, so this checkpoint system is invaluable.

If you see a clock, pop it! Checkpoints will help you avoid redoing difficult platforming sections

If you see a clock, pop it! Checkpoints will help you avoid redoing difficult platforming sections.

Be warned, however. Popping these clocks will have no impact if you exit the level. You’ll be sent back to the start if you rage quit because of a specific section’s difficulty. While neither game’s numerous levels aren’t tricky per-say, extra vision in Klonoa: Road To Phantomile and Chamber o’ Horror/Chamber o’ Fun in Klonoa 2 is very difficult. If you’re a completionist, you’ll have to beat all three, so if you see a clock, pop it and move on with the mission. Just don’t rage quit.

Don’t Ignore Collectibles

Klonoa is a hero, and what do heroes do? Save people! Specifically, in the first game, many citizens of the world have been hidden in bubbles that Klonoa must pop to liberate. These trapped citizens act as collectables, all of which must be found for total completion and the extra vision upon finishing the game. Luckily, there’s no need to get all these collectables in one go. Finish the main narrative, popping those you see and returning to the levels as often as you like once the credits roll.

Tracking down all collectibles will open extra visions that'll put your skill to the test

Tracking down all collectibles will open extra visions that’ll put your skill to the test.

Klonoa 2 takes a different path, but the goal and outcome are the same. A character called Moomet requires you to collect a total of twelve dolls, of which pieces can be found Strawen throughout almost every level. Returning six dolls will unlock a Chamber O’ Fun extra level. Bring all twelve back, and the last and most challenging, Chamber O’ Horror, will open. These two levels will put your platforming skills to the test.

Time Your Jumps

Knowing how and when to jump is critical in all platform games, and Klonoa is no different. Much of your time is spent shooting wind bullets to grab enemies and using them to propel yourself to the next platform. Sometimes you’ll have to chain together jumps, catching and jumping multiple times to reach higher places. These sections can be tricky, especially in later levels. The sequel adds snowboarding levels that demand precision jumps while staying on the path, but, thankfully, you also get checkpoints.

Catching some air!

Catching some air!

These snowboarding sections make for a refreshing change of pace from what is a homogenous experience throughout both games. Boss fights also take advantage of these sections, making things feel fresh, despite using the exact same method of defeating the boss as you would on foot. There are boarding levels late in Klonoa 2 that require near pinpoint accuracy or risk falling into the endless void. Ultimately, all this comes down to repetition and practice. Thank god for those checkpoint clocks mentioned above, huh?

Conclusion

I sincerely hope that these Klonoa: Phantasy Reverie Series beginners tips give you some idea of how to hit the ground running through the worlds of Phantomile and Lunatea. Both games still hold up well, but the extra lick of paint will surely help welcome new players and those looking for a dose of nostalgia.

Klonoa: Phantasy Reverie Series is available on PS5/4, Xbox Series S/X, and Nintendo Switch.

Judge BANS release of ‘graphic’ Naomi Judd suicide photos as it would cause family ‘pain’

A judge has sealed the release of Naomi Judd’s ‘graphic’ suicide photos after her daughters Ashley, Wynonna, and her widower, Larry Strickland, said making the sheriff’s records available would cause them ‘pain.’

The country superstar died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in April 2022 at the age of 76 – and now her family has filed for injunctive relief in Williamson County, Tennessee, to keep the investigation records into her death closed.

This follows revelations that Ashley, 54, and Wynonna, 58 – the other half of singing duo The Judds – were not included in their mother’s will after she passed away earlier this year.

The temporary order to ban the ‘graphic’ records, including photos, videos, and written documents, being put on public record, was granted on Tuesday.

According to documents seen by Fox News, the records ‘include photographs, video recordings, audio recordings, and written reports.’

But some of these records collected when investigating her death ‘contain Mrs. Judd depicted in a graphic manner.’

The order stated that if the records surrounding the country singer’s death were made public, her family would ‘suffer irreparable harm in the form of emotional distress, pain and mental anguish.’

It noted that the ‘entire family’ would feel pain for ‘years to come’ if the information was put on public record.

The order will be discussed in an evidentiary hearing on September 12.

Two weeks before her shocking death, Naomi stood on stage with Wynonna in a surprise reunion at the Country Music Awards in April 2022.

They sang a powerful song of reconciliation, written by Naomi – ‘Love Can Build A Bridge’ in what was her last public appearance before her suicide.

The Judds were the most successful country singers of the 80s, winning five Grammys, nine CMAs, and selling 20 million records.

This comes after details of Naomi’s will were recently brought to the surface – as the late country singer named her husband, Larry, as executor of her $25million fortune.

And according to sources, it caused discontent among the family.

Elder daughter Wynonna, 58, plans to contest her mother’s will, which made no provision for her or her half-sister Ashley, 54.

Wynonna’s decision to push back at her mother’s wishes was driven by a deep-seated sense of injustice and simmering discord that has plagued the family for decades.

Speaking to DailyMail.com, the source revealed that Ashley has sided with Strickland over her mother’s decision.

Country singer Naomi Judd left her two daughters, Wynonna and Ashley, out her will and instead appointed Larry Strickland, her husband of 33 years, as executor of her estate

Larry Strickland will have 'full authority and discretion' over Naomi Judd's assets 'without the approval of any court'

Elder daughter Wynonna, 58, is now grappling with her mother’s decision to exclude her from her will and instead leave her $25million fortune to husband Larry Strickland – despite building a successful music career together

‘Ashley Judd has no problem with her late mother Naomi leaving her entire $25million fortune to her second husband Larry Strickland,’ the insider said.

‘With Ashley it’s never really been about the money. She has a net worth of some $14million but she lives a relatively simple life.’

In contrast, the source added, the ‘finances are near and dear,’ to Wynonna, who has long had a troubled relationship with money, spending habits, and with her mother whom she called, ‘my beloved enemy.’

In the immediate aftermath of their mother’s death Ashley and Wynonna supported each other in their loss, attending her induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame, May 1, the day after their mother’s suicide.

But the sisters’ united front was allegedly short-lived. The source said, ‘[At first] Ashley and Wynonna really leaned on each other in their grief over Naomi’s death, but you knew it was only a matter of time before their ages-old sisterly issues would resurface.’

According to insiders, Wynonna feels entitled to a 'piece of the pie' as the 'lead singer' of The Judds and for taking Naomi from working as a nurse to being a star

The Judds at the Country Music Awards in 1985

According to insiders, Wynonna feels entitled to a ‘piece of the pie’ as the ‘lead singer’ of The Judds and for taking Naomi from working as a nurse in Nashville to being a global star

Naomi had a tumultuous upbringing – and in part she attributed her depression to the sexual abuse she suffered at the hands of an uncle when she was just three.

When she was 22, Naomi was raped and beaten by an ex-boyfriend, a trauma that saw her flee Los Angeles to rural Kentucky, where she lived with her children on welfare while training to become a nurse.

They lived in a home with no electricity, phone, television or indoor plumbing.

Naomi moved to Nashville when she qualified and ultimately became head nurse in an intensive care unit.

It was there that she learned a patient’s father was in the music industry. She made a tape of herself singing with Wynonna, gave it to him and ‘The Judds’ career in music was launched.

On May 29, one month after her mother’s death, Wynonna wrote an emotional Instagram post in which she spoke of her unbearable grief and her fear that she would never be able to ‘surrender to the truth’ of the way her mother left this life.

She wrote about ‘personal healing,’ her sense of being ‘helpless’ and the few things she knew in the face of such despair and drama.

She said she would continue to fight for her faith, herself and her family, to continue to ‘show up & sing.’

And she vowed to ‘break the cycle’ of addiction and dysfunction that has stalked the Judd women and, with Grace’s incarceration, threatens to tumble into yet another generation.

The Batgirl you’ll never see: why some films disappear for ever | batgirl

There was a time when being sent straight to video was about the most ignoble fate a would-be movie blockbuster could suffer: the vision of its makers confined to the dimensions of a television screen, never to be enjoyed by more than a sofa-full of people in one sitting. In the modern age, that fate became less tangible still: demoted to streaming, many good films even now float in a strange digital purgatory, sometimes connecting with sizeable audiences, yet rarely acquiring the tangible cultural currency of a hit in cinemas.

Still, such films-like Preyfor example, a surprisingly good predator prequel that skipped cinemas to premiere last week on Disney Plus – can at least be seen, and widely so, by those inclined. Right about now, the creative team behind Warner Bros’ addled comic-book film batgirl would gladly accept that outcome, after being dealt a far rarer and more egregious humiliation. Last week, it was announced that the near-complete film, having already racked up a budget of $90m, would not be released at all – not even on the Warner-owned streaming service HBO Max.

Scoob!: Holiday Haunting
Scoob!: Holiday Haunt – was it bad or did the numbers just not add up? Photograph: Warner Bros.

Also scrapped in the same announcement was the streaming-oriented animated Scooby-Doo prequel Scooby!: Holiday Haunting, though that unsurprisingly generated fewer headlines: in this age of superhero saturation, the industry was immediately abuzz with questions about how Batgirl’s wings could have been so brutally clipped. “Just how bad is it?” people asked, as reports of chilly test-screening reactions were dredged up. trade rag the wrapping reported that Warner’s new management team, led by CEO David Zaslav, felt the film “simply didn’t work”: once conceived for HBO Max, then lined up for theatrical distribution, it was allegedly felt that the Batman spin-off didn’t have the event-movie heft the studio required of its DC Comics properties.

Others suggested the issue wasn’t one of quality but cold hard numbers, which weren’t tracking well enough to justify the expense of marketing and releasing the film at any level: taking a tax write-down on batgirl and Scoob!: Holiday Haunting was, reported Variety, seen as the safest way to recover their costs. “We are incredibly grateful to the film-makers and their respective casts and hope to collaborate with everyone again in the near future,” read the studio’s bland statement, though you have to wonder why the talent involved would follow up on that tentative invitation.

Batgirl’s directors, Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah – a flashy Belgian-Moroccan duo who had a 2020 smash with bad boys for Lifeand whose far smaller-scale arthouse provocation Rebel premiered at Cannes in the spring – have been vocal in their blindsided dismay; the film’s Latina star, Leslie Grace, has limited herself to thanking her fans and collaborators. Industry watchdogs, meanwhile, wonder whether the studio’s accounting gambit is worth the ugly optics of junking a superhero film made and headed by people of color. El Arbi, Fallah and Grace can’t even count themselves in especially distinguished or plentiful company: the list of major films produced but never released in any capacity is not a long one.

It is not the first superhero property, however, to be barred from release. In 1993, Hollywood B-movie master Roger Corman helped produce a bargain-basement adaptation of another Marvel comic, Fantastic Four – a world apart from the vast, corporate Marvel machines filling multiplexes today. Made on a budget of $1m with a no-name cast, it was scheduled to premiere in 1994 and even had a trailer go out – before the studio abruptly canceled all plans to screen it publicly and confiscated the negatives. The late Marvel chief Stan Lee fed rumors that a release was never planned, and the film was made solely for the purposes of retaining the rights to the property; Corman has insisted otherwise. Albeit at a very different price point from batgirlit seems the film was also ultimately scuppered in the name of bookkeeping, but bootleg leaks readily available on YouTube indicate that no great art was lost in the process.

Sometimes, a perfectly seaworthy film is simply sunk by the individuals involved. In the wake of the #MeToo movement, many have had to change course because of toxic talent; some have given up entirely. gore, a Gore Vidal biopic shot in 2017 with Kevin Spacey in the lead, was in post-production when Netflix pulled the plug on the entire project. (Spacey’s role in the expensive Ridley Scott drama All the Money in the Worldon the other hand, was small enough to make a reshoot with a recast Christopher Plummer viable.)

Very occasionally, a film can be scotched even after it’s out in the world: Louis CK’s I Love You, Daddy, a dark comedy hinging on a teenage girl’s seduction by a sixtysomething film-maker, had premiered, to some warm reviews at the 2017 Toronto film festival, when the indie distributor the Orchard dropped it a week before its scheduled cinema release, as sexual misconduct allegations against its director-star emerged. Louis CK bought back the distribution rights. Rose Byrne, one of its stars, stated, “It’ll be a while before the film can be seen, and I think that’s right” – though such sentiments didn’t stop the film popping up on torrent sites.

Here in the UK, the ill-fated hippie hippie shake has become the ultimate cautionary tale for the vagaries of British film financing and production. Intended as a jaunty trip through the radical magazine publishing scene of the swinging 60s, the film was first announced in 1998 by Working Title Films – then in their post-Four Weddings and a Funeral glory days – before cycling through a procession of directors and additional writers; the cameras finally rolled in 2007 under director Beeban Kidron, with Cillian Murphy and Sienna Miller heading the cast. Nearly two years later, Kidron quit during post-production; a scheduled 2010 release date came and went before Working Title announced it would be shelved for ever. Reports vary among the few who have seen it as to how much of a misfire it is. But how the film, which was never going to be a blockbuster, could warrant such veil-drawing treatment remains an industry mystery.

If it’s hard to see on paper how hippie hippie shake could be unreleasable, the same can’t be said for The Day the Clown Cried, for decades regarded with morbid fascination as a kind of white whale of old-guard cinema. The European-produced 1972 Holocaust drama was written and directed by goofball comic Jerry Lewis, who also stars as a German circus clown imprisoned in a Nazi concentration camp and charged with leading children into the gas chambers. Aghast testimonies from the few who saw a rough cut at the time suggest it was every bit as misguided as it sounds; Lewis himself later admitted to being “embarrassed at [his] poor work”. In a rare case of a film being suspended by its own maker rather than by studio enforcement, it has been kept under lock and key for half a century, though Lewis donated the negative to the Library of Congress in 2015, two years before his death , requesting that it not be shown for at least a decade.

Will we eventually see the wreckage? Films buffs should be careful what they wish for. More often than not, even the most cursed productions eventually find their way to the light, and it is rarely for the best. Directed but disowned by David O Russell, the political satire nailed had a troubled, disrupted shoot that eventually ran aground in 2008, leading to years of financial disputes. In 2014, an independent distributor bought it from its bankrupted studio, cobbled together a final cut and released it as Accidental Love, directed by one “Stephen Greene”; the result was not a film anyone would want their real name attached to.

The glowing exception, meanwhile, is Kenneth Lonergan’s sprawling, knotty, rather magnificent Manhattan morality drama margaret, which sat in legal limbo for six years – with the director and studio Fox Searchlight locked in tortuous disagreement over a lengthy final cut – before it was finally freed in 2011, to critical acclaim that it has only escalated over the years. At present, it seems unlikely that batgirl – or, less likely still, Scoob!: Holiday Haunting – is in line for quite such a redemption. But such fairytales keep hope in a cutthroat industry alive.

Senate passes Democrats’ sweeping climate, health and tax bill, delivering win for Biden

Washington— The Senate on Sunday passed Democrats’ sweeping economy package designed to combat climate change, address health care costs and raise taxes on large corporations, marking a crucial achievement for President Biden and his party as they look to maintain their hold on Congress in the November midterm elections.

The plan, called the Inflation Reduction Act, cleared the upper chamber by a vote of 51 to 50 along party lines, with Vice President Kamala Harris providing the tie-breaking vote in the evenly divided Senate. Democrats used a fast-track legislative process known as reconciliation to pass the measure in the face of unanimous opposition from Republicans.

“It’s been a long, tough and winding road but at last, at last, we have arrived,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said in remarks on the Senate floor as members prepared to vote for final passage. “Today, after more than a year of hard work, the Senate is making history. I am confident the Inflation Reduction Act will endure as one of the defining legislative feats of the 21st century.”

The vote came after a marathon session that lasted through the night and into Sunday afternoon, with Democrats breaking into applause as members cast their final votes. In a process known as a “vote-a-rama,” Republicans offered a slew of amendments that Democrats successfully swatted down over nearly 16 hours of debate.

GOP senators did manage to block a provision that would have capped the price of insulin at $35 a month for those covered under private health care plans. Democrats needed 60 votes to waive reconciliation rules and keep that part of the bill, but it failed 57 to 43, with seven Republicans joining Democrats in support of the measure.

House Democratic leaders announced last week the lower chamber will return from its month-long recess on Friday to take up the legislation, which is expected to pass.

Mr. Biden praised Senate Democrats for passing the plan and acknowledged it required “many compromises.” He urged the House to swiftly approve the bill.

“Today, Senate Democrats sided with American families over special interests, voting to lower the cost of prescription drugs, health insurance, and everyday energy costs and reduce the deficit, while making the wealthiest corporations finally pay their fair share,” the president said in to statement. “I ran for president promising to make government work for working families again, and that is what this bill does — period.”

The package is the culmination of months of negotiations over Mr. Biden’s domestic policy agenda, which at times appeared to be on life support but was revived late last month with the surprise announcement of an agreement between Schumer and Sen. Joe Manchin, a moderate Democrat from West Virginia.

While the legislation is much more narrow than the sprawling $3.5 trillion proposal put forth by Mr. Biden last year, the tailored package had the backing of Manchin and Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, a Democrat from Arizona whose support was crucial.

Still, Democrats praise the plan as their answer to addressing rising consumer prices and for its nearly $400 billion investment in fighting climate change, the largest ever. The package allows Medicare to negotiate prescription drug prices, a key Democratic priority that is expected to save hundreds of billions of dollars over the next 10 years. It also extends enhanced health insurance subsidies that were set to expire at the end of the year, and imposes a 15% minimum tax on most corporations that make more than $1 billion each year.

The corporate tax provision emerged as a point of contention as senators neared a final vote on Sunday. Seven Democratic senators — Sinema, Jon Ossoff, Raphael Warnock, Catherine Cortez Masto, Maggie Hassan, Mark Kelly and Jacky Rosen — joined Republicans in backing an amendment put forward by GOP Sen. John Thune of South Dakota exempts some firms with private equity backing from the 15% minimum corporate tax rate. That amendment passed 57 to 43.

To boost clean energy, the measure includes tax credits for buying electric vehicles and manufacturing solar panels and wind turbines. It also provides rebates for consumers who buy energy efficient appliances and provides $4 billion for drought relief.

Schumer lauded the bill as the “boldest climate package” in US history, and called it a “game-changer” and “turning point.”

“It’s been a long time coming,” he said.

One piece of Democrats’ drug-pricing plan — imposing penalties on drug manufacturers that raised prices beyond inflation on private insurers — was removed after it was reviewed by Senate parliamentarian Elizbeth MacDonough. Her approval of the rest of the package, however, cleared the way for the upper chamber to move forward with its consideration of the bill.

The Congressional Budget Office estimates the legislation will cut the deficit by $102 billion over the next 10 years. Republicans, though, argued the plan will have little impact on inflation and instead raise taxes while leading to job losses.

in an interview with “Face the Nation” on Sunday, Sen. Rick Scott, a Republican from Florida, claimed Democrats’ drug pricing plan will harm seniors, while the tax component will increase taxes on Americans.

“Why would you be increasing the cost of government? We’re increasing taxes,” he said.

Black Ops 4 Will Cause Gamers to Choose an Xbox Over a Playstation.

Microsoft is within the method of exploiting Activision Blizzard, however, the large trade has got to overcome some vital hurdles. numerous regulatory bodies around the world can need to plow ahead before it’s formally passed.

Alternative corporations within the computer game trade are asked to form statements on the impact of Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard, with Sony’s victimization the chance to voice their considerations, particularly because it involves the decision of duty selection.

New record label raises profile of forgotten female composers | Music

LIza Lehmann, Alice Mary Smith and Adela Maddison were British composers of the 19th and early 20th centuries, but few today will know their names, let alone their music. Now they have been singled out by a new classical record label dedicated to raising the profile of female composers, many of whom have never been recorded and whose works have been “lost over time”.

The label, which is called La Boîte à Pépites (the jewel box), will discover and record compositions that have rarely, if ever, been heard before, yet deserve “a good position in the standard musical repertoire”.

Recent research by Donne, a charitable foundation focused on gender inequality within the music industry, found that only 747 out of almost 15,000 works performed by 100 orchestras from 27 countries in 2020-2021 were composed by women – a total of 5%.

Asked why female composers are overlooked, Gabriella Di Laccio, a soprano and founder of the Donne Foundation, told the observer: “There are several reasons. One very important one is ignorance of the repertoire. People in positions to include this music either don’t have time or their focus is not directed to learning what is available.

“Also, there is a fear of audiences not coming and, I’m sorry to say, prejudice. Unfortunately, we’ve been raised to believe that only men were genius composers. The unconscious bias is still present, which is very surprising.”

The new label has been founded by French cellist Héloïse Luzzati, who says that unearthing and studying original manuscripts has enabled researchers to “exhume” some extraordinary compositions. “Too few of them are published and therefore even fewer recorded,” she said.

The label’s first release, to be launched in the UK on 30 September, is devoted to French composer Charlotte Sohy, who died in 1955. Luzzati described her music as “amazing… impressionist… with the colors of Ravel, Debussy or Chausson”.

Asked why it has been ignored, she said: “If she had been a man, her music would have been known.”

A 3CD boxset features world premiere recordings of piano, chamber and orchestral works, performed by the National Orchestra of Avignon-Provence, among others.

In the sleeve notes, Alexis Labat, the orchestra’s executive director, writes: “The classical repertoire for symphonic formations covers over four centuries, and almost all of it is devoted to men … How can we explain this incredible deficit of women composers in our concert seasons and our recordings?”

Luzzati said: “A few years ago, the question of the role of women in the history of music began to gain a certain importance in my life as a musician. How could I have spent so many years without ever having played a piece composed by a woman?”

It inspired her to establish the project “Elles – Women Composers”, promoting female composers through a festival and a video channel.

The new record label is “expanding this mission” with a series of albums, each devoted to a single female composer. Its initial release in France in April proved “huge for someone who is unknown”, Luzzati said.

Extensive research is yet to be done into various British composers, including Lehmann, who wrote hundreds of solo and ensemble songs, many of which were well-received in their day.

Scholar Derek Hyde has described her as one of the three “most outstanding women songwriters” of the 19th century.

Luzzati said that Lehmann has been unjustly forgotten. She praised her emotion of her music, noting that “the quality of the writing is extraordinary”.

Next year, she plans to launch a music publishing-house: “Today, for example, we can hear Sohy’s music but, if a musician wants to play it, they must first write to us. You cannot find sheet music on a website or in a sheet music store. Editing works that are not yet published is essential to rehabilitate the works of female composers.”

She believes that, through such “positive discrimination”, forgotten female composers will finally be appreciated – eventually doing away with the need for their own record label. “Today this is not yet the case and there is still so much music of female composers to discover.”

Katherine Cooper, classical editor of Presto Music, who will be selling the recording, said: “I can’t think of another label solely devoted to female composers. It’s a great idea that someone is amplifying that and dedicating themselves to it. They are shining light on a lot of composers that are really poorly represented, if they’re represented at all.”

Shedding colonial ties can take time, but the TikTok clock is ticking

Labor’s Senate President Sue Lines (who last week said we should ditch the Lord’s Prayer at the opening of each day’s sitting) directed Thorpe to say the oath properly. Thorpe did so, but in a tone of such naked sarcasm that no one could mistake her in her contemplation.

It was a stunt, sure. But it is pretty wild that Australian parliamentarians are made to declare allegiance to the Queen.

And while Liz may never have donned a pith helmet herself, it’s undeniable she is the figurehead of an ex-colonial power which has a great deal of blood on her hands. The confrontation of this history means even royal tours these days are fraught.

Once, royals could rely on polite silence when visiting the Commonwealth outposts their forebears exploited. No more – in March, when Prince William and his wife Kate, our future queen, took an eight-day tour of Belize, Bahamas and Jamaica, it wasn’t all flag-waving children and military parades.

In Belize, they faced protests. In Jamaica, the prime minister told the Cambridges his country would be “moving on” to become a republic (just as Barbados did in 2021), and in the Bahamas a government committee urged the royals to make a “full and formal apology for their crimes against humanity”. Yikes.

We are living through an exciting period when history is being re-examined, and there is a heightened awareness of the damage wrought by colonialism.

In 2021, Scott Morrison’s government announced that the words “young and free” would be swapped for “one and free” in the national anthem (interestingly, the change was made by proclamation of the governor-general, the Crown’s representative).

It now seems astonishing how easily Aboriginal history was erased when the anthem was proclaimed in 1984 (again, by the governor-general).

Living royals are not the only ones feeling insecure – historical figures are also falling victim to this spirit of reappraisal, a trend that has picked up speed following the Black Lives Matter protests of 2020.

Winston Churchill is still venerated by many politicians, and seen, by older generations at least, as a symbol of anti-fascist defiance and patriotic heroism.

New biographies change the lens – a 2021 book on Churchill by Geoffrey Wheatcroft portrays Churchill as “not just a racist but a hypocrite, a dissembler, a narcissist, an opportunist, an imperialist, a drunk, a strategic bungler, a tax dodger, a neglectful father, a credit-hogging author, a terrible judge of character and, most of all, a masterful mythmaker”, in the words of the New York Times. oof.

Another recent biography by Tariq Ali argues that the post-war veneration of Churchill represents a nostalgia for empire.

Churchill led the fight against Nazi Germany, and saved the world from fascism.

But there is no doubt he was racist – he used the n-word and he called Chinese people “pigtails”.

Ali points out that in 1937 the great man said indigenous people in North America and Australia had been colonized by a “stronger race, a higher-grade race”.

The BBC coverage of the current Commonwealth Games has been tinged with skepticism, with one studio presenter asking her sports panel: “What does the Commonwealth mean in modern society?”

The diversity of the new parliament has been much commented upon.

Lidia Thorpe and Chandler-Mather are Greens politicians, and Thorpe is Indigenous, but perhaps the real “diversity” they represent is their relative youth. Thorpe is 48, a member of Generation X, and Chandler-Mather is just 30, a Millennial with a more relaxed concept of masculinity.

After he was chastised for his nude neck, he posted a TikTok video highlighting the fact that his question, once he was allowed to ask it, had been about public housing.

Likewise, the new teal independents are largely Gen X women.

They look young compared to the older male politicians who have traditionally dominated our politics, in their suits.

And their ties, of course.

Adams condemns Texas governor for busing migrants to New York

Adams said migrants were being forced onto buses — even if they wanted to go to destinations other than New York. Some were falsely told they would be taken to their desired destination, only to find themselves bound for New York, he said.

“Some of the families are on the bus that wanted to go to other locations, and they were not allowed to do so. They were forced on the bus,” Adams said. “Our goal is to immediately find out each family’s needs and give them the assistance they want.”

The city estimated last week that 4,000 asylum seekers have entered its shelter system since late May. Adams pointed to the influence when he revealed last month that the city violated state law by failing to timely place indigent families in city shelters.

Abbott has ordered the Texas Division of Emergency Management to charter buses to transport migrants from Texas to both New York and Washington, DC, where thousands of new arrivals have been sent since April.

“Because of President Biden’s continued refusal to acknowledge the crisis caused by his open border policies, the State of Texas has had to take unprecedented action to keep our communities safe,” Abbott said in a statement.

“In addition to Washington, DC, New York City is the ideal destination for these migrants, who can receive the abundance of city services and housing that Mayor Eric Adams has boasted about within the sanctuary city,” the statement said. “I hope he follows through on his promise of welcoming all migrants with open arms so that our overrun and overwhelmed border towns can find relief.”

Fourteen people were dropped off at the bus station morning Sunday, after three days of travel. Adams said officials expected 40 people to be on the bus, but others appear to have gotten off at other stops along the route.

“It is unimaginable what the governor of Texas has done, when you think about this country, a country that has always been open to those who were fleeing persecution,” Adams said. “We’ve always welcomed them. And this governor is not doing that in Texas. But we are going to set the right tone of being here for these families.”

The migrants who wish to remain in New York will be placed in shelters if needed, while volunteers will attempt to assist those who want to travel to other cities where family members are awaiting them.

Adams repeated his plea for federal aid to deal with the influence of asylum seekers.

“We need help, and we’re reaching out to the federal government to tell them that we need help,” he said. “We’re going to get through this.”

Abbott recently invited Adams and DC Mayor Muriel Bowser to the southern border — an invitation that Adams declined.

The mayor said Texas officials have not communicated about the busing push, and his administration has not been informed when buses are leaving or been given information about the passengers.

“It’s unfortunate that the governor of Texas isn’t coordinating,” he said. “They’re not giving us any information.”

Adams declined to call for any changes to federal immigration policy, saying he was focused on getting assistance to provide for arriving migrants.

“What Gov. Abbott is doing is cruel, misleading people,” said Manuel Castro, commissioner of the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs. “But we won’t fall for these scare tactics, and we are going to make sure asylum seekers have the resources and support they need here in New York.”

Use Your iPhone’s Hidden Microphone Effects to Improve Your Audio in FaceTime, Zoom, and Other Video Calling Apps « iOS & iPhone :: Gadget Hacks

Being seen clearly is an essential part of any video call you’re on, but being heard is equally important. Lousy audio from your side can ruin the experience for others on the call if they can’t understand you or hear the sounds they need or want to hear. To improve your audio feed during FaceTime, Google Meet, Instagram, WhatsApp, Zoom, and other video calls, unlock your iPhone’s hidden audio filters.

Mic Mode processing was first introduced in iOS 15, iPadOS 15, and macOS Monterey, alongside Video Effects, as a new FaceTime feature. But you can use it in almost any audio and video calling app as long as it adds support.

With the hidden Mic Mode effects, Apple gives you control over how the audio processor interprets the signal from the microphones on your devices. The effects use machine learning to either dampen ambient sounds around you to isolate your voice or include even more audio around you without any distracting echoes.

There are three modes that you can choose from:

  • Standard (default): This uses standard digital signal processing (DSP) for audio, the same processing available for all apps on your device.
  • Voice Isolation: This prioritizes your speech and removes unwanted ambient noise such as typing on keyboards, mouse clicks, lawn mowers, construction work, etc. Use it when your voice is the only important thing others need to hear. It’s most useful during group video conferences and work meetings where you don’t need to highlight sounds around you.
  • Wide Spectrum: This minimizes audio processing to capture your voice and all sounds around you better but still includes echo cancellation to keep calls smooth. Use it when you want others on the video call to feel like they’re right there with you. It’s most helpful when chatting with family, so they don’t miss out on anything, and when conducting music and other audio-based lessons, such as teaching someone to play guitar or understand music history.

Which Apps Support Mic Mode?

Any app that uses the Voice over Internet Protocol background mode automatically supports Mic Mode without any code changes, but only for video calls.

That means it won’t work in audio-only calls or when recording video in a camera app. So for apps like FaceTime, Google Meet, Skype, and Zoom, you can use Mic Mode in any video conference. But for other apps that don’t focus on video conferencing, like Instagram and WhatsApp, you’d only be able to use it for video calls — not for audio messages or stories.

When recording video stories in apps like Facebook, Instagram, or Snapchat, the Video Effects tool may work but Mic Mode will be unusable. Developers can manually disable support in their apps, and those who don’t use the VoIP background mode can incorporate the feature.

Which Devices Support Mic Mode?

Mic Mode works on any iPhone running iOS 15 or later with an A12 Bionic or newer chip. The chip requirements are the same for iPad, and you should be running iPadOS 15 or later. It is also available on 2018 Mac models or newer running macOS Monterey 12 or later. You can see the complete list of compatible Apple devices at the end of this article.

How to Enable Mic Mode Effects in Supported Apps

Start a video call or conference in whatever app you usually use for it, then open Control Center. If the app supports “Video Effects” and/or “Mic Mode,” you’ll see two new buttons at the top for them. By default, Mic Mode is always set to “Standard” and has to be switched by you manually — apps can’t change it for you.

To change modes, tap “Mic Mode,” and a new menu with the different options will appear. Choose between “Voice Isolation,” “Wide Spectrum,” or “Standard.” Then, tap on the background to return to Control Center’s main screen, and you should see your selected filter named inside the Mic Mode button. Exit Control Center, and continue your call with better audio.

Tap the Mic Mode button (left) to switch to a different audio filter (right).

An app may support Video Effects but not Mic Mode, in which case the Mic Mode button would display “Off,” and nothing would happen when you tap it. In some cases, you’ll see “Standard,” but you won’t be able to choose a different audio filter when you open the Mic Mode selector. Instead, you’ll get a “Voice Isolation and Wide Spectrum are currently unavailable” alert.

When Mic Mode is disabled (left) and when Standard is only available (right).
