ASX:ANZ ANZ boss Shayne Elliott hoses down fears of a recession

The banks have passed on all the RBA’s rate rises since the central bank started tightening monetary policy in May.

Despite the positive outlook about Australia’s ability to withstand rocky economic conditions, Elliott said he sometimes worried Australia’s “lucky country” mentality risked complacency or a lack of reform.

“I worry that in Australia … I worry that this ‘lucky country’ idea, which is true, it has been extraordinarily fortunate, sometimes makes it easy to walk away from really hard decisions and you think about reform, or lack of, over the last 10 or 15 years. Those things I worry about.”

Asked about what he wanted to see from the new federal Labor government when it delivers its budget later this year, Elliott said: “What we want is some aspiration.”

He said that ANZ was currently in the process of figuring out its own budget, and was grappling with similar questions about future outlook.

“I understand there are a lot of moving parts… the question is what are you going to do? What’s the aspiration? What are you going to do to change the future? How do you shape the future? he said.

“The government, part of their roles is to set signals so that people in rooms like this sit around and go that’s the rules of the game… I have some clarity about those aspirations and the future.

“I think the good thing about our economy in a liberal democracy is private sector then gets on with it and says ok, those are the rules.”

Elliott also joked that the government’s upcoming jobs summit, should be a “worker’s summit”, given ongoing labor shortages.

“There’s lots of jobs, we just need people to fill them,” he said.

ANZ recently announced a $4.9 billion deal to buy Suncorp’s bank, which will face regulatory scrutiny before it proceeds. On Friday, he said he was confident he continued to be confident about the deal and was “very optimistic” it would get the tick of approval.

Google NYC blitz wants Apple to get RCS ‘Message’

On Tuesday, Google kicked off its “Get The Message” RCS campaign online and will be continuing with digital billboards in NYC going after Apple.

Starting August 25, the pressure campaign will appear on over 500 digital billboards in Manhattan and Brooklyn. The examples we have today show the ads appearing on LinkNYC kiosks and their portrait displays, which fit the messaging thread nature of the advertisements. [Note: We were initially informed that there would also be “static billboards,” but we’re now told NYC is just a digital campaign running until October 6.]

Google is going after how Android to iPhone texting results in low-resolution images due to the old MMS standard, while noting the blue/green bubble phenomenon.

The green Android head appears in the bottom-left corner with a “Help Apple #GetTheMessage” and link to the Android.com website. There’s also a Chrome Dino QR code.

Until NYC goes live, Google will continue running digital Get The Message advertising on YouTube, Twitter, and TikTok targeting Apple. It also has “celebrity influencers” (like Keke Palmer, Vanessa Hudgens, and Madelaine Petsch) on Instagram and Twitter.

Google wants Apple to adopt RCS (Rich Communication Services) so that iPhone and Android users texting each other can benefit from read receipts, typing indicators, sending over data, higher-res video and images, and better group chats.

Messaging is how we stay connected with our family, allow our friendships to feel close enough to touch no matter how far apart they are, and how we get things done. However, conversations between people using iOS and Android platforms today are unnecessarily challenging and they emotionally pull us apart. From Google’s perspective, any platform that isn’t built to bring people together simply doesn’t represent the level of seamless communication and modern technology people deserve and expect. This campaign is intended to deliver a clear call to Apple to finally join us in adopting the latest messaging standards that provides the best possible messaging experience for everyone, both on iOS and Android.

Choice survey reveals Aussies are under the pump trying to pay their bills

New research has revealed nine out of 10 Aussies say they are struggling to manage their household budgets amid the rising cost of living.

A survey by consumer group Choice found 90 per cent of more than 1000 participating households said their bills had increased since 2021 – with the biggest financial burdens health insurance and utilities.

Choice editor Marg Rafferty said almost all Aussie households were feeling the pressure of price rises, with the report highlighting how difficult it’s become to manage the household budget.

“Among the biggest financial burdens, the research found, was health insurance and utilities,” she said.

“Cost of living pressures continue to be a major issue for Australians.”

Almost three in five respondents reported concerns about their disposable income, with pulse data revealing 23 per cent of households are struggling to get by, which is up from 18 per cent in June last year.

Ms Rafferty offered advice to Australians struggling to keep up with their bills, saying “there’s a chance you could be getting a better deal elsewhere”.

“Our research shows you can save up to $935 a year on hospital cover by switching to a similar policy with a different provider.” she said.

“It always helps to spend some time comparing what’s on the market.”

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, household spending in June was up more than 10 per cent compared with the same time period last year.

But household bill hikes are not the only thing Aussies are spending their money on, with residents feeling the pinch of an additional 15 per cent increase on services and 5 per cent rise on goods.

The monthly figures, which were released on Tuesday, revealed both discretionary and non-discretionary spending increased following an inflation rate of 6.1 per cent.

Non-essential costs rose by 10.8 per cent, driven by spending in recreation and cultural activities, while essential spending rose by 9.8 per cent, due to the rising cost of transport.

The most significant area of spending was on transport, up 22.7 per cent, driven by higher oil prices due to the ongoing war in Ukraine and the demand for air travel.

Spending at hospitality businesses like hotels, cafes and restaurants was up 17.1 per cent in what is viewed as a positive return to pre-pandemic levels.

There was also strong growth in spending on clothing and footwear – up 16.3 per cent, as well as a 15.5 per cent increase in recreation and culture.

Jacqui Vitas, from the Australia Bureau of Statistics, said June marked the 16th consecutive month of through-the-year increases in total household spending.

“This was off the back of consistent decreases in total household spending from March 2020 to February 2021, as responses to Covid-19 were experienced across the country,” she said.

“Spending categories most impacted from Covid-19 responses – transport, hotels, cafes and restaurants, and clothing and footwear – have now returned to pre-pandemic levels.”

Does Google Think Gen Z Is the Answer to Its Green Text Woes?

This week, alongside a massive unveiling of brand new foldable devices and accessories from Samsung, Google put out its own ad campaign in an attempt to rally the troops against Apple’s tyrannical reign on messaging. Google’s #getthemessage campaign hopes to stoke the flames of millions of bothered Android fans so that Apple might be encouraged to support RCS messaging, the cross-platform standard recently adopted by Google Messages.

The Get The Message website reads like a Bible class handout from my old Christian school. It has all the talking points Google wants me to use to remind people that it’s Apple’s fault that I, as an Android user, don’t have access to the full resolution and capabilities afforded by Apple Messages. Google brings up that, sometimes, group messages get broken because they include a mixture of Apple and Android-using folks, often leading to “social frustration.” It even links to past coverage pointing to evidence that children and teens dread carrying around Android devices for fear of being denoted an uncool Green Bubble.

I immediately knew what Google was going for when I saw the ad campaign go live. I remember covering Google Senior Vice President Hiroshi Lockheimer’s first tweet storm about the inefficiencies of Apple’s proprietary messaging standard. And then the second time, months after when he called on Apple to make it easier on everyone.

But the latest #getthemessage campaign seems a little all over the place. I’m struggling to understand precisely the demographic that is supposed to go after Apple to make things play nice. Is it Android olds like me who are crotchety and have complained about the lack of parity in messaging since the early days on the platform? Or is it Gen Z-ers on TikTok who have no problem taking in the weirdest Riverdale storylines and running with whatever horror shitshow the CW is allowing to show over there? (I hear it’s very good.)

Why is Madelaine Petsch, who plays Cheryl on Riverdalepart of this advertising campaign? Is she supposed to inspire the youngins to help drive the point home? Furthermore, why is Vanessa Hudgens part of this ad campaign, when her last relevant IMDB entry is The Princess Switch, a Netflix-exclusive Christmas movie with nothing on my Lifetime favourites? I have absolutely no emotional connection to these people as an Android user. Not to mention, you can tell they’re reading off a script from their screens. I don’t believe these famous-ish people know what my life is like wielding an Android phone and hanging out in Apple land.

What’s the problem with iMessage?

There’s indeed fragmentation in text messaging among the major mobile platforms. Apple Messages app runs on the iMessage service to send texts between iPhones and other iOS-enabled devices. It supports end-to-end encryption, better support for group chats, and high-resolution images and videos. But when an Apple user texts an Android device with the default texting application, the message is sent out as an old-school SMS or MMS message, often deprecating the experience of the text on the Android user’s side.

Google adopted RCS, or Rich Communication Services, to try to fix this dichotomy, and it’s already in use in other markets. RCS enables encrypted messaging, high-quality media sharing, and other modern features like bigger character limits and read receipts. If you have access to RCS on Android Messages and are chatting with another Android user, you already have access to some of these features. That’s what life could be like with your iPhone-using pal.

Google has attempted to bridge the gap between iOS and Android messengers despite the repeated pleas for Apple to do the work. Emoji reactions, which used to be limited to iPhone users, became available earlier this year after the company added support for them on Android.

The fragmentation will persist unless Apple wants to get on board with RCS. But Apple is committed to keeping its walled garden coifed and gated up, because it helps sell its hardware, where it makes the bulk of its cash. The iOS 16 Beta already has iPhone-only abilities to edit and delete delivered iMessages. That sort of feature is possible precisely because of the tightly-knit nature of the iOS platform.

Anyway, I wouldn’t be surprised if this campaign fizzles out because Android users have already moved on. Meta’s Messenger and WhatsApp have a stronger hold on the market, and many other messaging apps work with your phone number. Even I’ve moved on from Android Messages and find most of my daily correspondence happening exclusively inside Instagram DMs.

Why the Grease star made it in the US when so many others didn’t

“In pre-Beatles British pop, the bosses were Australians,” Walker says. “I do n’t know how Gormley picked up on Olivia, but he took her in de ella, and then of course, when Pat Carroll and John Farrar went over there, Farrar formed a band with those Shadows guys [Welch, Hank Marvin, and Farrar].”

As a duo, Carroll and Newton-John made small waves on the UK TV and cabaret circuit but after Carroll returned to Australia, her husband Farrar became the key songwriter and producer in Newton-John’s story. It was he and Welch who arranged the traditional murder ballad Banks of the Ohioand produced her debut studio album in 1971.

“Farrar was guitar player and singer in the Melbourne band the Strangers,” explains Melbourne music historian Ian McFarlane, author of The Encyclopedia of Australian Rock and Pop. “They were massive in the ’60s and they were the house band for The Go!! Show ” – the Channel 10 pop show hosted by Ian Turpie, a former boyfriend of Newton-John’s.

Bizarrely, it was a British shoe salesman named Lee Kramer – “he made millions of pounds importing cowboy boots into England,” Walker says – who managed her crucial leap to Los Angeles to capitalize on her deal with MCA Records in the early ’70s.

loading

But the gumnut mafia connections would continue. Farrar was Newton-John’s producer until 1989, teaming with Stigwood’s RSO to produce the grease phenomenon, and writing a string of No. 1 hits including Have You Never Been Mellow, You’re the One That I Want, Hopelessly Devoted to You and magic. It was Steve Kipner, a Bee Gees associate from way back, who co-wrote Physical in 1981. By that time, Newton-John was managed by Australian powerhouse Roger Davies, in the midst of his epic journey from Sherbet to Pink.

Still, great business connections can only explain so much in the rise of a fair dinkum global superstar. “I don’t know,” says Walker. “I don’t know how they marketed her, how they made it all work. I guess they had some good songs. I suppose it’s just that incredible breath of fresh air that she was.”

40 years on from the death of Clyde Fenton, the larrikin lifesaver’s legacy lives on

He flew in his single-engine Gipsy Moth on moonless nights or in torrential rain, often unlicensed, and at least once in his pajamas, with only a magnetic compass for navigation.

His name was Clyde Fenton – the tall, bespectacled doctor who, in the 1930s, clocked up 3000 hours and a quarter of a million miles, tending to the sick and injured across the Northern Territory.

This year marks 40 years since Dr Fenton’s death, and his legacy as one of Australia’s “original” flying doctors continues to live on.

It was 1934 when Dr Fenton arrived in Katherine to establish an aerial medical service and it wasn’t long before his services became relied upon.

Indian students come to Australia for work, not education

A new survey of education agents by education company Navitas found that the top five factors influencing student choice of study destination globally are: cost of study, quality of education, access to post-study work rights, opportunities to work while studying, and opportunities for permanent migration.

However, for students from South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa, they are most concerned with gaining post-study work rights, and are the least concerned about the quality of education:

Important issues for international students

Students from South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa care more about work rights than quality of education.

These results should be no surprise. A recent study by IDP Connect revealed how the prime motivation for Indian students to study in Australia is to gain permanent residency and work rights:

IDP Connect’s New Horizons research shows international students consider migration incentives and employment opportunities when choosing where, what and how to study. “We’ve seen a significant decrease in interest from Indian students looking to study in Australia,” said Wharton, who said a key motivation for Indian students’ decision to study abroad include migration and face-to-face learning opportunities…

Wharton said if Australia can communicate a roadmap towards a large-scale return of international students, with clear pathways towards employment and migration outcomes, Australia could be in a good position to retain its status as a leading study abroad destination…

The former vice-chancellor of Macquarie University, Professor Steven Schwartz, also admitted that many international students only study in Australia to gain working rights and permanent residence:

[Professor Schwartz] said foreign students flock to courses likely to lead to jobs and permanent residence…

“Permanent residence is one of the main motivations to study in Australia’…

“If suddenly permanent residence was given to people who study poetry, it’s likely they’d all be doing poetry.”

New Delhi-based education consultant Gauravdeep Bumra noted similar:

“Most Indian students choose to study abroad, often at the cost of thousands of dollars, because they have a long-term goal of getting permanent residence, be it in Australia, Canada or the UK”.

“The day they open their borders, the student intake numbers will uptick…”

so you have The Australian’s international education correspondent, Tim Dodd:

“Too many of the expanding numbers of students from India and the subcontinent were in low quality, generic business courses, and hoping for permanent residency without having in-demand skills.”

Thus, any move to lift international student numbers will necessarily require Australia to reach further down the quality barrel and erode entry standards even further. Doing so would be detrimental to the long-run productivity and prosperity of Australia, which relies upon quality education and skills.

Instead of lowering the quality bar even further to increase numbers, Australia’s international education system should instead target a smaller intake of high quality students via:

  1. Lifting entry standards (particularly English-language proficiency);
  2. Lifting financial requirements needed to enter Australia; and
  3. Removing the link between studying, work rights and permanent residence.

These reforms would raise student quality, would lift genuine export revenues per student, would lift wage growth by removing competition in the jobs market, and would lower enrollment numbers to sensible and sustainable levels, in turn improving the experience for local students.

Sadly, we all know these reforms would never happen. If work rights and permanent residence were scaled back, the numbers of arriving students would collapse.

Our policy makers will instead crater standards even further to entice as many warm bodies into Australia as possible. Because the edu-migration industry rent-seekers demand it.

Mike Tyson’s Ferrari F50 up for auction, could fetch $US5.5 million

All ears? A rare Ferrari F50 once owned by boxing champion Mike Tyson is heading to auction, and it could eclipse current records.

A low-mileage 1996 Ferrari F50 previously owned by former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson is tipped to set new auction records for the V12 supercar.

Listed by auction house Gooding & Company, the Rosso Corsa red Ferrari F50 is estimated to sell for a hammer price between $US4.5 million to $US5.5 million (between $6 million and $7.8 million in Australian currency) at next weekend’s Pebble Beach auctions in California.

Built by Ferrari’s Maranello factory in February 1996, this chassis is the 73rd of 349 examples of the F50 to roll off the production line, and one of 55 built for the US market.

According to the listing, this particular Ferrari F50 was first delivered to Beverly Hills Sports Cars in Los Angeles, where it was purchased by car broker Nadir Amirv before it was sold to Mike Tyson.

It is not clear whether Tyson had purchased the Ferrari F50 before or after his infamous fight with Evander Holyfield, in which ‘Iron Mike’ bit a portion of his opponent’s ear off.

Tyson owned the supercar for a number of years before it was sold in 2001 to Kevin Marcus, the co-founder of the early search engine website InfoSpace.

Numerous collectors have owned the Ferrari F50 since Marcus sold it a handful of years later, however the odometer currently reads 6193 miles (9966 km).

The listing states the Ferrari F50 was given a comprehensive service within the past six months, consisting of a new clutch, tires, air-conditioning system and refurbished Alcantara door cards – all of which set the current owner back roughly $US75,000 ($ AU105,000).

While the Ferrari F50 may not have received the praise of its F40 predecessor when it was launched in 1995, it is now appreciated as a modern classic.

The F50 was one of the first road-going production cars to use a carbon-fibre monocoque, tipping the scales at just 1223kg fully laden.

Its 4.7-liter V12 engine was based on the 3.5-liter unit which Ferrari used to power its 1990 and 1991 Formula One cars, although in the F50 it only produced 382kW and 471Nm – all of which was sent to the 355mm-wide rear tires via a six-speed manual gearbox.

Values of the F1-derived V12 supercar have been increasing in recent years, as the F50’s auction record was reset earlier this year.

If this particular example sells at the lower end of Gooding & Company’s estimates, it could set a new Ferrari F50 auction record.
