Hamstring injury could spell “season over” for Kennedy as Cunnington makes VFL return

Sydney midfielder Josh Kennedy may not play again in 2022 after injuring his hamstring in Sunday’s VFL win against North Melbourne at Arden Street Oval.

While the Swans prevailed 75-95, Kennedy was only able to muster the 10 disposals as he limped off the ground early in the game.

Kennedy’s year has been hampered by hamstring issues as he last played at senior level in Round 10 against Carlton.

It’s unfortunate timing for the 290-game veteran who was nearing a return as signaled by his selection as the Swans’ medical substitute in last weekend’s win over GWS.

In better news, North Melbourne champion Ben Cunnington fared well in his long-awaited return for the Kangaroos.

Cunnington last played at any level in Round 19 of last season having battled testicular cancer.

After more than a year out, the 31-year-old picked up 18 disposals and three clearances.

For Sydney, James Bell (two goals, 25 disposals), Sam Wicks (three goals, 27 disposals), Peter Ladhams (26 disposals, 17 hitouts) and Joel Amartey (three goals) were standouts as they look to return to AFL level ahead of endings.

As well as Cunnington, Tarryn Thomas (one goal, 20 disposals) and Atu Bosenavulagi (20 disposals) were strong in defeat for the Kangaroos
