Dems support for Gibbs could backfire ‘in a spectacular way,’ defeated US Rep. Peter Meijer warns

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — US Rep. Peter Meijer on Sunday said a Democratic ad campaign to boost support for John Gibbs in the Republican primary for a West Michigan congressional seat could backfire “in a spectacular way” in the November election.

“It’s a dangerous strategy,” Meijer said, speaking on CBS’ Face the Nation. “Where President Biden is in his approval of him is so in the gutter… it is easy to see that strategy backfiring in a spectacular way, which is all the more reason why we should not be embracing the zero-sum idea of politics .”

The first-term congressman, who was targeted for voting to impeach former President Donald Trump after the Jan. 6 attack on the US Capitol, was defeated by Gibbs 52% to 48%.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee spent $435,000 in the final stretch of the Republican primary campaign on an advertisement that, while framed as an attack on Gibbs, sought to boost his credentials among voters who support Trump.

The ad highlighted Gibbs’ endorsement by Trump, his service in the Trump administration, and said Gibbs would support policies such as “crack down on immigration” and a pro “patriotic” education in K-12 schools. The idea behind the ad, from Democrats’ perspective, was that Gibbs would be easier to beat than Meijer in the November general election.

Gibbs, a former political commentator who worked in the Trump administration, will now face Democrat Hillary Scholten in the general election for Michigan’s 3rd Congressional District. The district, which was redrawn last year, includes portions of Kent, Ottawa and Muskegon counties.

The nonpartisan Cook Political Report has said the race between Gibbs and Scholten leans Democratic, but Gibbs has said he can win over Meijer’s supporters and keep the district in Republican hands. Gibbs denies the results of the 2020 election.

On Sunday, Meijer took responsibility for being defeated by Gibbs. However, he said he faced an extra hurdle when the DCCC released its ad to boost Gibbs, who grew up near Lansing and didn’t move to West Michigan until launching his campaign last year.

“So, we had a scenario where not only did I have the former president aligned against me, but in a rare showing of bipartisan unity, Nancy Pelosi and the House Democratic Campaign Committee, also united to try to knock me off the ballot,” Meijer said.

Ultimately, the impact of the DCCC’s advertisement is “unknowable,” Meijer told host Margaret Brennan.

But, he added, “The fact that we have the establishment left and the extreme right locking arms in common cause paints a very telling picture of where our politics are in 2022.”

Related: Trump impeachment vote followed Congressman Peter Meijer to election day

In other remarks, Meijer said his accomplishments in office have gotten “lost” in the current political environment. He mentioned, for example, that he was “proud that our office is on track to set a record for the most number of bills signed into law by a freshman.”

“That those type of accomplishments get lost in our current personality politics, get lost in a broader sense…I think that is one of the fundamental challenges that we have as a country, and that is, frankly, frustrating Michigan families,” he said .

“We are dealing with a politics that does not reward substance that does not reward, you know, reality.”

Video catches teens crash stolen Kia, take off running on highway

Video from traffic cameras on a Minnesota highway shows a group of teenagers crash a stolen Kia and take off running.

It happened Saturday on Interstate 35E northbound, according to Fox 9. Footage shows a stolen Kia smash into a median after the driver attempted to avoid police stop sticks. Four teens then jump out of the smoking car, run and dodge traffic to get to the other side of the road where state troopers were waiting. All four were arrested: a 14-year-old boy and three girls ages 15-17.

Two of the girls had minor injuries and were taken to the hospital, authorities said.

The incident began around 5:30 pm when a rental car company contacted St. Paul Police saying they had a GPS tracker on a 2021 Kia Forte that had been stolen in Minneapolis and was headed to St. Paul, a police spokesman said.

“St. Paul Police requested assistance from a State Patrol helicopter, and the pilot used the coordinates from the GPS tracker to locate the car as it came to a stop on Portland and Dale streets in St. Paul,” Fox 9 reports.

The teens got back in the car as police squad cars approached. Officers stood back as the car traveled through a residential neighborhood, but the helicopter continued to track the Kia as the driver drove erratically down city streets and onto the highway, the police spokesman said.

The crash occurred roughly 15 minutes after the incident first began.

Law enforcement in the area have expressed concern about a nationwide trend this summer involving Hyundai and Kia thefts. A viral Tiktok video from the so-called “Kia Boys” shows thieves how to use a USB cable to steal rides.

Video captured the teens running away from the stolen car.

The automaker is so familiar with the rash of thefts it has issued the following statement to media outlets, including Fox 29 Philadelphia.

“Kia America is aware of the rise in vehicle thefts of a subset of trim levels,” the statement read. “All 2022 models and trims have an immobilizer applied either at the beginning of the year or as a running change. All Kia vehicles for sale in the US meet or exceed Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. Kia customers with questions regarding their Kia vehicle should contact the Consumer Assistance center directly at 1-800-333-4542.

Former US ambassador predicts Griner will be released in ‘two-for-two’ prisoner swap

Former US Ambassador to the UN Bill Richardson predicted Sunday that US citizens Paul Whelan and Brittney Griner, who are imprisoned in Russia, will be freed in a “two-for-two” prisoner swap with Moscow.

“I’m optimistic. I think she’s going to be free,” Richardson said of WNBA star Griner on ABC’s “This Week.”

“There’s gonna be a prisoner swap, though, and I think it’ll be two-for-two, involving Paul Whelan. We can’t forget him.”

Griner was sentenced last week to nine years in a penal colony for drug possession and smuggling, after pleading guilty to drug possession charges. Whelan, a former US Marine, is three years into a 16-year sentence on spying charges, which he and the US deny.

Richardson dodged questions about whether educator Marc Fogel, who is facing 14 years for drug possession and smuggling, would also be included in swap talks.

“All of these that are wrongfully detained need to come home,” Richardson said.

He added that his foundation, The Richardson Center, is involved in talks about the release of three other Americans held by Russia, but that he was a “catalyst” for what would ultimately be a government-to-government agreement.

The Biden administration reportedly floated a potential prisoner swap last month in which Griner and Whelan would be released in exchange for convicted Russian arms trafficker Viktor Bout. Officials have publicly confirmed that they offered an exchange but have not explicitly said if it involved Bout.

President Biden on Friday said he’s “hopeful” about Griner’s situation, though White House officials declined to say if there were specific developments that led him to feel that way.

Richardson on Sunday commended Biden for considering the exchange with Bout, though he said “I would have done it quietly.”

“Our objective should be, despite prisoner exchanges that are not popular, to bring American hostages home. Some of these prisoner exchanges are not good. The optics are not good. But we have to do it sometimes,” he said.

More human remains found in receding reservoir near Las Vegas

Lake Mead, a federal park as well as the country’s largest reservoir, has unveiled yet more secrets as human remains were discovered at Swim Beach on Saturday, officials said.

The find was reported in the late morning at the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, the National Park Service said in a statement. Park rangers cordoned off the area while Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department divers helped with recovery, it said.

It was the fourth time since May possibly decades-old remains have been reported at the lake located in Arizona and Nevada 30 miles southeast of Las Vegas. The discoveries include the following:

  • May 1: Remains were found in a barrel. A victim had suffered a gunshot wound and his or her demise might be dated to the 1970s or early ’80s based on clothing, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said.
  • May 7: Remains were found in another barrel discovered along a shoreline, officials said.
  • July 25: Remains were reported at Swim Beach.

The Clark County Medical Examiner is responsible for determining identities, where possible, and cause of death.

A July 6 discovery of remains near the reservoir’s Bolder Islands turned out to be the body of a woman who had gone missing after she fell off a jet ski June 30, authorities said.

Authorities and experts say the four discoveries of possibly much older remains could be the result of the lake’s receding waterline, which has dropped its telltale white “bathtub ring,” made of drying minerals, more than 170 feet since 1983. The reservoir is at about one-quarter of its capacity.

In May, the Southern Nevada Water Authority announced that one of its water supply intakes was exposed to the lake’s descending surface and could no longer be used to draw liquid. The authority said it had long planned for the event, and had a deeper intake ready to take over.

Nearly continuous drought in major regions of the West and Southwest has plagued the Colorado River since at least the dawn of the millennium. Other symptoms have included the mighty Colorado’s longtime failure to reach the Gulf of California until last year, when a binational agreement put water back in Mexico’s delta.

The growing Southwest’s dependence on the Colorado River — which feeds taps and helps grow food for an estimated 33 million people — has also played a role in the lake’s shrinking presence. Last year the federal government announced mandatory water cuts for the seven states that use the Colorado.

In June, Lake Mead’s surface elevation was measured at 1,044.03 feet, its lowest since the lake was filled in the 1930s. In July, that number was bested by a new low: 1040.92 feet.

Some observers have speculated that the lake could reveal some long-held secrets buried by mobsters who killed for power and money in Las Vegas in the decades following World War II.

Historian and Mob Museum Vice President Geoff Schumacher told NBC News affiliate KNSV of Las Vegas that it was unlikely the mob would dump bodies so close to town because it was averse the kind of publicity and law enforcement attention that might have created.

“The mob doesn’t want murder victims to be found in the city because it creates bad publicity in a tourist town,” he told the station in July.

However, Schumacher said in May a body in barrel is a different story.

“A barrel has a signature of a mob hit,” he said. “Stuffing a body in a barrel. Sometimes they would dump it in the water.”

Lake Mead was created by Hoover Dam, completed in 1935 and officially opened the next year. It held up the Colorado River’s flow through Black Canyon and pushed water into four basins that can help it hold two years’ worth of the river’s flow.

How R9X Knife Bomb Became Prime Weapon for Hard-to-Reach Terrorists

  • The US killed Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri in a precision airstrike this month.
  • The circumstances of the strike suggest the US used the R9X variant of its Hellfire missile.
  • The R9X is basically a missile packed with swords, and the US is very secretive about its use.

The US killed Ayman al-Zawahiri, the leader of Al Qaeda and a deputy of the late Osama bin Laden, in a precision airstrike earlier this month.

One of the most wanted terrorists in the world, al-Zawahiri was killed as he stood on a balcony of a house in Kabul. The early morning strike was conducted by a drone that fired two AGM-114 Hellfire missiles.

Unlike past drone strikes in Afghanistan, including one in the final days of the US withdrawal last year, this strike is believed to have only killed its intended target and caused little collateral damage — suggesting that the CIA-led attack made use of one of the most secretive weapons in the US arsenal.

Developed in an attempt to reduce collateral damage and civilian casualties, the R9X Hellfire missile is probably one of the most, if not the most, precise munitions of its kind in the world.

While other versions of the Hellfire take out targets in the expected ways — through explosive force or with shrapnel — the R9X crushes or slices a target to death. It is essentially a flying bundle of swords that can kill the occupant of a car without harming people around the vehicle.

The missile itself is about 6 feet long and 100 pounds with six 18-inch blades that pop out of its midsection seconds before impact. Propelled by the missile, they can slice through most anything in their path and have a reported kill radius of 3 feet.

Precision drone strikes are nothing new in the US-led war on terror. Since 2001, US leaders have turned to unmanned aerial systems to monitor, track, and take out terrorists all over the world.

The heavy reliance on drone strikes in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Somalia, Yemen, Syria, Iraq, and elsewhere led to increased civilian casualties. That, along with terrorists’ attempts to surround themselves with civilians to avoid US airstrikes, prompted development of the R9X during the Obama administration, according to US officials who revealed the ammunition’s existence to The Wall Street Journal in 2019.

The US military has used the AGM-114 Hellfire for decades. Several variants tailored to different operational circumstances have been developed and become some of the most frequently used precision-guided munitions. In 2015 alone, units assigned to US Special Operations Command fired more than 1,000 Hellfire missiles of all variants, primarily against ISIS targets in Iraq and Syria.

The R9X variant is reserved for the most important and hardest-to-reach targets and doesn’t appear to be used often.

Some prominent cases of his employment include a 2019 strike in Yemen against Jamal al-Badawi, an Al Qaeda terrorist behind the USS Cole bombing in 2000; a 2017 strike in Syria against Ahmad Hasan Abu Khayr al-Masri, deputy leader of Al Qaeda; and a 2020 strike in Syria against Sayyaf al-Tunsi, a senior Al Qaeda member.

The strike on al-Zawahiri was carried out by the CIA, but the US intelligence community isn’t the only one using the R9X.

US Special Operations Command is “the first purchaser” of the missile, the Pentagon says. SOCOM and the secretive unit within it, Joint Special Operations Command, have used the missile several times in the past to take out high-value targets across the Middle East.

The US special-operations community as a whole heavily invested in aerial drones after seeing early in the war on terror that they offer immense utility and flexibility to commanders. Today, all special-operations units use drones of all sizes.

The strike on al-Zawahiri was reportedly conducted with an MQ-9 Reaper, a newer, heavier version of the MQ-1 Predator. Another Predator variant, the MQ-1C Gray Eagle, remains in use with the “Night Stalkers” of the US Army’s 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment.

Energy Experts Say Climate Bill Could Help Consumers Cut Utility Bill Costs

The Inflation Reduction Act that was passed by the Senate on Sunday could lower electricity bills for consumers and the prices of things like rooftop solar panels, energy-efficient appliances and electric vehicles, Democrats and some energy experts said.

Under the legislation, a home improvement credit for energy efficiency would allow households to deduct from their taxes up to 30 percent of the cost of upgrades like heat pumps and insulation. Another provision extends a program that allows households that are installing solar or battery storage systems to deduct 30 percent of the cost of those projects from their taxes.

Rewiring America, a nonprofit group that promotes energy efficiency, said it estimated that those and other measures in the legislation could save households $1,800 a year.

The package also continues an incentive for families to replace their gas-powered vehicles with electric. It extends a current $7,500 tax credit for new electric vehicles and $4,000 for a used one. Couples who earn less than $300,000 a year or individuals who earn less than $150,000 a year would be eligible for the credits, and consumers would get the discount at the dealership.

“This bill will help create jobs and lower costs for many American families,” in addition to slowing climate change, said Senator Thomas R. Carper, Democrat of Delaware.

Republicans said they expected the measure to drive up inflation and said the credits would not help Americans.

“They’re not into buying an electric car any time in the near future,” Senator Marco Rubio, Republican of Florida, said of his constituents. “They’d like gas prices to come down because we’re producing more oil.”

Mayor pushes back as Texas sends more than 4,000 immigrants to NYC

The mayor spoke to the media outside of the busy bus terminal Sunday morning, adding that some of the families on the bus wanted to go to another city. But when they tried to explain, they were given no choice, the mayor asserted.

“It is unimaginable what the governor of Texas has done. When you think about this country, a country that has always been open to those who are fleeing persecution and other intolerable conditions,” he said. “We’ve always welcomed that. And this governor is not doing that in Texas. But we are going to set the right message and the right tone of being here for these families.”

Abbott involved New York as a means of trying to force President Joe Biden’s hand on enacting stricter border security measures.

“New York City is the ideal destination for these migrants, who can receive the abundance of city services and housing that Mayor Eric Adams has boasted about within the sanctuary city,” Abbott said in a statement. “I hope he follows through on his promise of welcoming all migrants with open arms so that our overrun and overwhelmed border towns can find relief.”

Abbott claimed a bus that arrived in New York on Friday with 54 immigrant passengers was the first to be sent by Texas, but New York City officials said they were skeptical, pointing to a considerably larger number of people who have arrived in the city in recent months, though not all by bus.

Manuel Castro, the city’s immigrant affairs commissioner, said Abbott was using immigrants “as political pawns,” and urged the Biden administration to provide federal relief.

“Our budgets are impacted because no one plans for [4,000] or [5,000] or 6,000 or even more people to arrive, so they need a shelter,” Castro said in an interview with Gothamist. “And so of course, that’s the assistance we are seeking the federal government to step in.”

Although the city is asking the federal government for emergency relief, it is not talking to officials in Texas.

“Frankly, they’re not communicating, coordinating at all,” said Castro. “This is meant to be disruptive, and that’s unfortunate. Because we’re talking about people’s lives.”

Nurse Involved in Deadly Windsor Hills Crash Could Be Charged Monday – NBC Los Angeles

Charges could be filed as early as Monday against a registered nurse from Houston who is suspected of speeding a Mercedes through a Windsor Hills intersection, sparking a fiery crash that killed six people — including an infant and a pregnant woman.

Nicole Lorraine Linton, 37, was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence.

Linton was released from Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center Saturday and is in police custody being held on a $2 million bail, according to police records.

District Attorney George Gascón said Friday that his office would be “working with law enforcement throughout the weekend,” and the investigation could be presented to his office for consideration of charges “as early as Monday.”

“Preliminary investigation indicates Nicole Lorraine Linton was driving a dark-colored Mercedes, traveling southbound on La Brea Ave. at a high rate of speed,” a CHP statement said.

“While driving the Mercedes, Linton proceeded through a red light and collided into multiple vehicles traveling eastbound and westbound on Slauson Ave. As a result of this collision, multiple parties were ejected and two vehicles were fully engulfed in flames. Following the collision, involved parties were transported to (Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center) by ambulance and six individuals were declared deceased on scene,” the CHP reported.

“Due to extensive fire damage, it is unknown at this time the make and model of the involved vehicles and which vehicles the involved parties were traveling in,” the CHP reported.

Kaiser Permanente issued a statement Friday saying, “Everyone at Kaiser Permanente is deeply saddened by Thursday’s horrific crash. It’s impossible to imagine the pain those involved are experiencing. Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragedy. At this time, we are not able to comment on what has been reported as a criminal investigation.”

The pregnant woman who died in the crash was identified Friday by the coroner’s office as 23-year-old Asherey Ryan of LA. She and her de ella male fetus were among the victims killed in the crash that occurred just before 1:40 pm Thursday at La Brea and Slauson avenues, near Ladera Park.

According to Ryan’s family, the woman’s year-old son, Alonzo Quintero, was also killed, along with Ryan’s boyfriend, who was the father of her unborn son. Ryan’s boyfriend was driving the car that was struck, according to a video posted online by Ryan’s sister of hers, Shoshanna Kerr.

Kerr identified him as Reynold Lester, 24, of LA who worked as a security guard.

Another person killed at the scene has been identified as Craig Pitchford, 66, a possible pedestrian, according to the coroner’s office.

In the video, Kerr said Ryan was 8 1/2 months pregnant, and she was on her way to a doctor’s appointment when the crash occurred.

The family was planning to name the unborn infant Armani Lester, according to the LA County coroner’s office.

“She left the house at 1:30. She woke me up,” Kerr said. “She woke me up and told me she was going to go to her doctor’s appointment, that she loved me and she’ll be right back. “

She said that 15 minutes later, she saw video of the car crash. “And for some reason, as soon as I saw that video, it hit me. It felt different. I felt connected,” she said.

Kerr said she cried throughout the night.

“I didn’t sleep one bit,” she said. “I’m all raised out.”

Shoshanna Kerr also told reporters that Ryan’s family forgives the driver who caused the crash.

“I just want to tell her that we forgive her,” she said. “She will have to live with this for the rest of her life. That’s why she was spared. We understand it already.”

A GoFundMe page established on behalf of the family had raised over $127,000 as of Sunday morning.

On Friday and again on Saturday night, friends and family gathered at the crash site to remember and say goodbye to the victims. Lighted candles dotted a memorial near the site of the fiery crash. Saturday’s gathering included some LA County firefighters who were among the first to respond to the crash.

Earl Ofari Hutchinson, a nearby resident and president of the Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable, told reporters the intersection has been historically dangerous with speeding vehicles, as well as the scene of occasional street takeovers.

Dramatic surveillance video from the scene Thursday showed the Mercedes plowing through the 35 mph zone on La Brea at a speed authorities estimate neared 100 mph — speeding through a red light at Slauson and broad-siding a vehicle.

The crash ignited an inferno as the sedan struck by the Mercedes was pushed into at least one other vehicle, and both wound up against a gas station sign on the corner. A trail of fire was left burning in the intersection as the vehicles struck by the speeding driver were engulfed in flames.

CHP reports indicate eight vehicles, including Linton’s, were involved in the collision. The heavily damaged Mercedes ended up near a bench down the street.

According to the fire department and the CHP, three adults and one infant died in the collision, and there were multiple ejections due to the crash. Ryan’s male fetus was also being counted among the deceased.

The CHP reported a sixth victim was later found dead in the burned wreckage of one vehicle, but further information about that person has not been released.

Eight others were injured in the collision, including seven occupants of a Chevrolet Traverse. The 33-year-old driver, a year-old boy and three teenagers suffered moderate injuries, while two other teens inside the vehicle had only minor injuries.

The eighth victim — the 19-year-old driver of an Audi A3 — also suffered minor injuries.

Democrat after final passage of climate bill: ‘Now I can look my kids in the eye’

Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) was visibly emotional after the Senate passed a sweeping spending bill Sunday afternoon, emphasizing the importance of what Democrats are heralding as the largest climate investment in US history.

“This is a planetary emergency and this is the first time that the federal government has taken action that is worthy of the moment,” Schatz said outside the Senate chamber minutes after the bill passed.

“This is the biggest climate action that any country has ever taken, and now I can look my kids in the eye and say we’re really doing something about climate,” he added.

The Senate passed the mammoth bill shortly after 3 pm on Sunday, capping off a marathon session that featured more than 15 hours of debate. Vice President Harris cast the tie-breaking vote to send the measure to the House, where it is widely expected to pass.

The bill, titled the Inflation Reduction Act, provides $369 in energy security and climate investments. The measure includes $4,000 and $7,500 tax credits for purchasing used and new electric vehicles, but the funds cannot go towards vehicles that have batteries made from minerals processed in China.

The legislation is expected to bring down climate-warming emissions by 40 percent over the next 10 years.

Schatz, chief deputy whip for the Democratic caucus, told reporters “we’ve been fighting for this for decades.”

Democrats approved the bill through budget reconciliation, an arcane process that requires a simple majority vote for passage. The process allowed Democrats to avoid a GOP filibuster.

During a press conference shortly after passage of the bill Sunday, Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (DN.Y.) said the upper chamber “has now passed the most significant bill to fight the climate crisis ever.”

“It’s gonna make a difference to my grandkids. The world will be a better place for my grandchildren because of what we did today. And that makes me feel very, very good. Very, very good,” the Democratic leader added.
