What Is Bluetooth Multipoint?

Earbuds next to a phone and a computer
Kris Wouk / How-To Geek

Multipoint Bluetooth aims to let your earbuds, headphones, or portable speaker pull double duty, switching between taking calls on your phone and watching a movie on your laptop. But how does that work, and how can it work for you?

The History of Multipoint Bluetooth

While Bluetooth makes life easier in a few ways, it’s incredibly frustrating in others. Pairing a Bluetooth device isn’t a fun process when it works seamlessly, and it’s just plain painful when your devices aren’t cooperating. Bluetooth multipoint was created to help alleviate this issue by letting you connect to multiple devices with one headset or speaker.

While multipoint has been around for longer than you may think, Bluetooth itself predates multipoint by 10 years. The first Bluetooth devices launched in 1999, and Bluetooth really began to take off in 2000.

The Bluetooth Special Interest Group, or SIG, introduced Bluetooth multipoint in 2010, but you probably didn’t hear of it until long after. Initially, multipoint Bluetooth was aimed at professionals making calls, and it’s only relatively recently multipoint has made it into consumer devices.

What is Multipoint Bluetooth Good For?

As mentioned above, Bluetooth’s pairing process isn’t one most people are keen to repeat. Multipoint Bluetooth lets you connect one headset or speaker to two playback devices. The Bluetooth device then switches between devices depending on a variety of contexts.

For example, imagine you’re wearing a set of earbuds connected to your phone. With multipoint, you can pair with your computer as well and use your earbuds to watch YouTube videos. When your phone rings, you can answer it and your earbuds will automatically switch over to take the call.

The above example is how most people tend to use multipoint Bluetooth, but as mentioned above, it was originally meant for people who spent most of their time making calls. Multipoint lets you easily switch between a work phone and a personal phone, for example.

How Does Multipoint Bluetooth Work?

All Bluetooth devices work by an ad-hoc mini network. This lets you use multiple wireless mice, game controllers, or other devices without needing to have any sort of hub, as you would with a Wi-Fi network. The downside is that Bluetooth is limited to a relatively short range, around 30 to 100 feet depending on the technology used, but that’s plenty of range for most cases.

When it comes to Bluetooth audio devices in a typical connection, there would only be two devices on the network: your Bluetooth audio device, and your playback device. The audio device would be your headset or speaker, while the playback device is your phone or computer.

Bluetooth multipoint slightly adjusts the above by allowing multiple source devices connected to the playback device. The playback device controls both source devices, choosing which one to play audio from.

WIth the above example of earbuds connected to a phone or a computer, tapping the pause / resume button would pause and resume your video. Once your phone rings, however, tapping the same button would pause the video, switch audio to your phone, and answer the call. At least, that’s how it should ideally work.

Limitations of Multipoint Bluetooth

In every scenario we’ve looked at, there is a single audio device like a speaker or headphones, then multiple playback devices. This is the only way that multipoint Bluetooth works.

Multipoint Bluetooth doesn’t let you connect a speaker and a headset to a computer, then switch back and forth based on which one you press play on. While this may be possible, it’s not part of the multipoint Bluetooth specification.

Multipoint is also typically limited to a pair of source devices, though with a version of multipoint known as Triple Connectivity, that number goes up to three. That is the upper limit, and so far, there is no version of multipoint that lets you connect four or more source devices.

Another limitation of multipoint Bluetooth is that it won’t play sound from each source device at the same time. This isn’t something most people would use very often anyway, but keep in mind that this may mean your earbuds will stop playing audio from a YouTube video to play a notification chime from your phone, for example.

Finally, multipoint Bluetooth doesn’t come free. Manufacturers need to build it into their headphones or other audio products, and this raises the overall cost of the product.

For this reason, you didn’t find multipoint in many consumer devices for years. Even now, while multipoint is available in more products than ever, it’s still far from ubiquitous.

If you’re wondering if you already have multipoint built into a device you already own, it can be tricky to find out. There isn’t just one way to pair with multiple devices using multipoint, so you can’t always just try and see if it works. The easiest way to find out if a product you own supports multipoint is to check via the manufacturer’s website.

Different Types of Multipoint

The most basic form of multipoint Bluetooth is known as simple multipoint. This lets you connect to multiple devices, including multiple phones, but answering a call on one while connected on the other will hang up the other call when it switches. Simple multipoint is the type you find most often in consumer devices.

Advanced Multipoint Headphones

Bose Quiet Comfort 45

Bose QuietComfort 45 wireless headphones feature advanced multipoint, making them perfect for busy professionals who want to make the most of their downtime.

Advanced multipoint is meant more for business users. It’s mostly similar to simple multipoint, but when switching calls, this type of multipoint puts the first call on hold instead of simply hanging up. Triple connectivity, as the name implies, allows three source devices instead of two.

Finally, you have proprietary solutions that do what multipoint Bluetooth does, only in a different way. Both Apple and Samsung, for example, have an alternative that uses your account details to intelligently switch audio to whichever device you may be using at a given moment.

Triple ConnectivityBluetooth Headset

Jabra MotionOffice

If you don’t need music or entertainment, but you’re just looking for a headset to get serious work done, the Jabra Motion Office’s lets you communicate from three different devices.

As mentioned above, multipoint doesn’t allow audio from one source to play on multiple devices. That said, Bluetooth 5.0 introduced a feature that allows just this. This feature may have different names from manufacturer to manufacturer, but it’s part of the core Bluetooth 5.0 specification.

Spectralink DECT devices now integrated with Microsoft Teams SIP Gateway

Spectralink DECT devices are now integrated with Microsoft Teams SIP Gateway to help create better results for business-critical frontline workers.

The DECT devices integration with Microsoft Teams SIP Gateway is now available in Australia and New Zealand through local distributor Wavelink.

The integration comes at a time when sectors such as healthcare, manufacturing, retail, and logistics, are relying more heavily on business-critical deskless workers (workers who have to go to a business location to carry out their roles).

It is clear that enterprise businesses globally have also embraced the significant business benefits of cloud-based collaboration tools, leading to more demand for better technology.

In today’s climate, deskless workers must be able to communicate and collaborate easily with their colleagues who work across locations, shifts, and time zones from anywhere. This is often enabled by cloud-based communication and collaboration tools like Microsoft Teams.

The new integration will further enable enterprise customers to migrate to Microsoft Teams while keeping those business-critical deskless workers connected through and after the process.

“Open integration is part of Spectralink’s DNA and this latest integration proves our commitment to the objective of providing customers with choice over their preferred systems,” says Spectralink Corporation managing director EMEA Julien Bertheuil.

“As more and more businesses were coming to us asking for support migrating to the cloud to improve worker collaboration and safety, our experience in enterprise-grade DECT, combined with our knowledge of the Unified Communications as a Service (UCaaS) market, meant we We were ideally placed to develop this much-needed integration with Microsoft Teams. Galaxy ZFlip4? Watch5? What to Expect at Samsung’s Aug. 10 Unpacked Event

Samsung is holding a big fall event on Wednesday, Aug. 10, where we expect to see two folding phones—the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4—along with two Galaxy Watch 5 watches and new Galaxy Buds earbuds.

Super-leaker Evan Blass recently published a massive gallery of all the new devices(Opens in a new window) on the Indian website he works with, 91Mobiles. He shows every device in an array of different colors. I encourage you to go to Evan’s story to see the full array.

The event will be virtual, held at 9 am ET on Aug. 10, and you can watch it on Samsung’s website(Opens in a new window) or on YouTube(Opens in a new window). But folks in New York City get a special surprise: A massive, mysterious Samsung pop-up space has appeared on 10th Avenue near the High Line in Manhattan (photo above), and the hours on the currently closed door say it will be open from Aug.11-31.

If you aren’t on ET, here are some other time zones for the Unpacked event:

  • 6 a.m. PT

  • 2pm BST

  • 3 p.m. CET

  • 7 p.m. in Mumbai

  • 9 p.m. in Taipei

  • 10 pm in Seoul

  • 11 p.m. in Sydney

When Will These Products Be Available?

You can currently “reserve” the new Samsung products to get a special coupon, with no commitment necessary. They are anticipated to go on pre-sale shortly after the event ends, with a sale date of Aug. 26.

They will be available at all the major US carriers as well as Samsung, Best Buy, and Amazon. Samsung will almost certainly have aggressive trade-in deals for your old phones and watches.

How Much Will They Cost?

One of the big questions around the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 and Z Fold4 is how much they will cost in the US.

Samsung’s mobile head TM Roh says he’s aiming to make foldables “mainstream” this year, which may signal more affordable prices. The Galaxy Z Flip3 cost $999.99 and comprised 70% of last year’s Samsung foldable sales; the Galaxy Z Fold3, at $1799.99, was the other 30%.

A recent leak of a Dutch Amazon page(Opens in a new window) for the Z Fold4 claims that the phone will cost $10,374. I can say with 100% confidence that the Galaxy Z Fold4 will not cost more than $5,000.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 looks a lot like the Z Flip3, according to renders and leaks. The biggest immediate change is what looks like a less protruding hinge, which will make the whole device feel slightly smaller in your pocket.

A writer for 91Mobiles claims to have specifications for the phone. The most important is a bigger battery: 3,700mAh versus 3,300mAh in the Z Flip3. I cited the Z Flip3’s battery life as its biggest minus in my review. He also says the front screen is a touch bigger, going from 1.9 to 2.1 inches.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4

Reliable leaker Ice Universe showed a Fold4 (right) next to a Fold3 (left) and calls it “a further optimized version of Fold3.” You can see in his comparison that the Fold4 is slightly shorter and wider, giving the front display a more natural aspect ratio; the bezel also appears to be slimmer.

Ice also tweeted some other specs earlier this year, including a new camera system with 50MP, 12MP ultra-wide, and 10MP 3x zoom cameras. Maybe I just like Ice right now because it’s 90 degrees in my home office.

One Twitter leaker who I don’t know, has been endorsed by Ice Universe, a leaker I trust. He gives good news about some performance improvements with the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor, but points out that charging is still limited to 25 watts.

Samsung Galaxy Watch5

A French website, Dealabs, appears to give many of the details(Opens in a new window) on the new watches, which go on sale on Aug. 26. The main Watch5, which replaces the basic Watch4 model, will come in 40mm and 44mm sizes in Bluetooth and 4G models. The Galaxy Watch5 Pro, a more rugged device, will come in only a 45mm size.

The watches run Google’s Wear OS on Samsung Exynos W920 processors, according to the site, and are IP68 rated for waterproofing.

Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 Pro

German website WinFuture claims to have full information(Opens in a new window) on Samsung’s Galaxy Buds 2 Pro earbuds. According to the site, the buds will have eight hours of battery life per charge, with a total of 29 hours in their charging case.

The Buds will have 10mm main drivers and a 5.3mm high-frequency tweeter. They’ll offer a 33dB reduction in ambient sound with their active noise cancellation. They’ll be expensive, though: at $233 in Europe, they’re competing with Apple’s AirPods Pro.

We hope to have hands on with these new devices right after the launch event.

Fitbits will soon lose the ability to sync with computers

The Fitbit Ionic currently lets you download music to the device.
Enlarge / The Fitbit Ionic currently lets you download music to the device.

Valentina Palladin

Fitbit owners who like to sync their fitness tracker with a computer to enable offline listening of downloaded music without a monthly fee will soon need to change their approach.

As spotted by 9to5Google on Saturday, Fitbit will no longer allow users to sync their devices over a computer starting in October.

“On October 13, 2022, we’re removing the option to sync your Fitbit device with the Fitbit Connect app on your computer,” a Fitbit support page reads. “Download and use the Fitbit app on your phone to sync your device.”

The Fitbit Connect desktop software lets you transfer music from your computer to the wearable if you have a supporting watch. Newer devices, like the Fitbit Sense and Versa 3, cannot store downloaded music.

After October, owners of older Fitbits, like the Fitbit Versa and Versa 2, will also have to rely on subscriptions to not-so-popular services for offline music. “After the Fitbit Connect app on your computer is deactivated, you can continue to transfer music to your watch through the Deezer app. Customers in the United States can also use the Pandora app,” Fitbit’s support page says.

Deezer and Pandora both require monthly subscriptions for music downloading and offline listening, with fees starting at $10 per month after any eligible trial periods.

Remember, Fitbits still don’t let you add music you’ve downloaded through streaming services, though you can control music on your smartphone with a Fitbit.

The new limitation shouldn’t last forever. When Google acquired Fitbit in 2021, the fitness tracker company confirmed that Fitbits running Google’s Wear OS are on the way. Wear OS has offline support for subscribers to Spotify Premium and YouTube Music.

The death of the Fitbit Connect desktop app will mean that Fitbit wearers who have managed to avoid the brand’s mobile app have fewer options. An increasingly subscription-focused marketplace has been coming for a long time now. Fitbit Connect is still downloadable on Windows 10 and Mac OS X, but the company says the Fitbit app for iPhone and Android provides the “best experience.”

For now, you can still download and listen to music from your Fitbit; you just won’t be able to add more songs after October.

Less than 1 percent of Netflix’s subscribers are playing its games

Netflix’s entry into the gaming market is off to a slow start. According to an analysis performed by Apptopia on behalf of , the streaming giant’s games have been downloaded a total of 23.3 million times and average about 1.7 million daily users. Put another way, less than one percent of Netflix’s 221 million customers are taking advantage of the games included in their subscriptions.

Netflix did not immediately respond to Engadget’s request for comment. In the past, the company indicated it did not expect its gaming division to be profitable immediately. “We’re going to be experimental and try a bunch of things,” Netflix COO Greg Peters told investors during the company’s fourth-quarter earnings calls last year.

Still, the question that’s probably on everyone’s mind is how long Netflix is willing to wait to see if it made the right bet, especially after it during its most recent quarter. Other lofty bets — like the company’s in-house fan blog, Tudum — were the subject of cutbacks after only a few months of spending.

The company has shared precious few details on how much it has spent expanding its portfolio beyond TV shows and movies, but most signs point to a significant investment. Earlier this year, the company paid $72 million to , the studio behind Stranger Things: Puzzle Tales. More recently, it secured exclusive mobile rights to beloved indie titles like Spiritfarer and . The company is unlikely to make similar investments in the future if its current ones don’t pan out.

Solar-powered coating repairs car scratches in just 30 minutes of sunlight

ULSAN, South Korea — A new transparent coating can actually get rid of those ugly scratches in your car after just 30 minutes, scientists reveal. A team in South Korea says the protective material “self-heals” damaged surfaces using nothing but sunlight!

Until now, researchers say it’s been difficult for manufacturers to create a coating that’s colorless, transparent, and has a high level of durability. The new material fills all of those needs, according to Dr. Jin Chul Kim, Dr. Young il Park, and Dr. Ji-Eun Jeong of the Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology (KRICT).

“The developed technology is a platform technology that synthesizes self-healing coating materials using both inexpensive commercial polymer materials and photothermal dyes. It is expected to be widely used not only in automotive clearcoats but also in various applications,” says Dr. Jin Chul Kim in a media release.

To examine their invention’s performance, researchers coated a lab-scale model of a car using a spray-coating machine. The team then exposed the scratched car to midday sunlight for a half-hour. Results reveal that the scratches completely disappeared, with the surface of the coating material fully restored.

How does the coating work?

When the material absorbs sunlight, its surface temperature rises as light energy turns into thermal energy. The higher temps make it possible for the self-healing to begin through the dissociation and recombination of chemical bonds in the surface polymers.

Study authors combined a commercial coating resin with a dynamic chemical bond (Hindered urea structure) that allows this process to occur. They also mixed it with a transparent photothermal dye, so the chemical bonding starts after exposure to sunlight.

Although this is not the first time scientists have experimented with photothermal dyes, previous studies mainly used inorganic materials that are hard to apply industrially while maintaining a clear and transparent color. Moreover, study authors say inorganic materials need more light energy to trigger a photothermal effect than their urea coating does.

The team also used transparent organic photothermal dyes that absorb near-infrared light. This type of light consists of long-wavelength energy and accounts for less than 10 percent of natural sunlight.

Researchers add that there are several perks to using organic photothermal dyes in commercial coatings. These include not affecting the product color, easily blending with various types of paints, and being generally cheap to use.

Aside from repairing car surface, study authors say this new coating can become a protective material for mass transit vehicles, electronic devices like smartphones, and even buildings in the future. Since the material uses fewer harmful organic solvents, the team says their invention would likely be carbon neutral, unlike repainting a scratched vehicle.

The Most Annoying Microsoft Edge Features Everyone Should Disable

Now that Microsoft Edge is based on the Chromium engine (the same engine that powers Google Chrome), it’s actually a good browser. You can think of it like Chrome, but better for privacy and battery life. But it’s still a Microsoft product, and it has the affinity to pick up some bloat and annoying features. Thankfully, it’s nothing that a couple of minutes on the Settings page won’t fix. If you use Microsoft Edge as the default browser on your Mac or Windows PC, consider disabling these features to make browsing even easier.

Get rid of the search icon on every image

Google Chrome added a fantastic feature that lets you search for similar images using Google Lens (with OCR, too). Microsoft Edge got the same feature, but uses Bing instead of Google Images. To make matters worse, Edge shows an icon for Image Search when you hover over any image (in the top-right corner). That alone would get annoying. You can disable the feature though. Go to Settings > appearance > Visual Search and disable the “Show visual search on image hover.” If you want, you can still use the feature from the right-click menu.

Get rid of Bing search

If you’ve just started using Microsoft Edge, you might have noticed the default search engine is Bing. If that’s not your jam, go to Settings > Privacy, Search and Services > Address bar and search > Search engine used in the address bar. Here, you can switch to “Google” or “DuckDuckGo.”

Disable all the annoying coupon popups

Coupon add-ons are great, but Microsoft’s built-in Shopping tool will pop up every time you visit any storefront. If you want to disable them, go to Settings > Privacy, Search and Services and disable the “Save time and money with Shopping in Microsoft Edge” feature.

Remove all the junk from the start page

Screenshot: Khamosh PathakScreenshot: Khamosh Pathak

The start page in Microsoft Edge is great once you get rid of all the junk. You can begin by going to the start page and clicking the Settings icon. Here, you can switch to the “focused” mode to only keep the search bar. You can also go to the “customized” section, keep the “Quick Links” section, and enable the “Background of the day” feature. Make sure to disable the “content” feature to get rid of Microsoft News panels.

Get rid of the pop-up Downloads panel

The era of the Downloads bar at the bottom of the browser is behind us, but Edge still likes to remind us by popping open the Downloads drawer every time you start a new download. If you’re ok finding your way to the Downloads button at the top (which shows the progress visually), disable the pop-up feature. Go to Settings > Downloads and disable the “Show downloads menu when a download starts” feature.

Stop Office files from opening in the browser

Because Edge is made by Microsoft, it insists on first opening Microsoft Office documents or files in the browser instead of the dedicated apps. You can reverse this by going to Settings > Downloads. Here, disable the “Open Office files in the browser” feature.

ASRock Intel Arc A380 Challenger ITX Graphics Card Benchmarked in Games & 3DMark

ASRock’s newly launched Intel Arc A380 Challenger ITX graphics card has been benchmarked in several games and 3DMark benchmarks.

ASRock Gives A Spin To Its Intel Arc A380 Graphics Card In Various Games & 3DMark Benchmarks

Launched last week, the ASRock Intel Arc A380 graphics card is a small form factor solution for the ITX segment. The GPU is based on the Alchemist ACM-G11 SKU, featuring 8 Xe-Cores or 1024 ALUs. The card comes rated with a 500W PSU requirement and features a single HDMI 2.0b and three DisplayPort 2.0 (w/ DSC) ports. There’s 6 GB of GDDR6 memory which is the highest we have seen on this gen’s entry-level cards and since the whole thing is designed around the ITX form factor, it measures 190 x 124 x 39 mm.

ASRock Intel Arc A380 Challenger ITX Graphics Card Gallery (Image Credits: ASRock Weibo):

ASRock decided to test the card itself and we can see that while the card features an official clock speed of 2250 MHz, the GPU was actually running at 2450 MHz. Within the Furmark stress test, the chip produced a maximum temperature of 78C which is decent considering this is a conservative cooler with a singular fan and a small heatsink underneath its shroud.

The ASRock Intel Arc A380 Challenger ITX graphics card was tested in various games and 3DMark benchmarks. You can see the results below but what is surprising is that the card actually delivered lower performance than the GUNNIR Intel Arc A380 Photon which features the same 2.45 GHz GPU clock speed and a TDP of 92W which is fed through an 8-pin connector. The ASRock variant also has a single 8-pin connector but we don’t know the actual TDP of the graphics card as it wasn’t revealed by the manufacturer.

In 3DMark Time Spy, the graphics card scores 4426 points whereas the GUNNIR model with the same clock speed scores over 5000 points so it looks like there is some power or clock frequency disparity that isn’t visible going on in the background since we can’ Don’t make of any other thing that would affect the performance so much. Even the driver used is the latest one that reviewers had been using to test the GUNNIR model. Pro applications being a strong suite of Arc GPUs show that the card is able to outperform the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 by 23% in the Puget Systems Photo-Shop benchmark.

ASRock Arc A380 Challenger ITX Gaming (AAA) Benchmarks:

ASRock Arc A380 Challenger ITX Gaming (eSports) Benchmarks:

Gaming numbers are also provided in various titles which show the Arc A380 delivering over 60 & 100 FPS in most eSports titles at 1080P. Running actual AAA titles results in lower performance at around 50-60 FPS at 1080p which is still playable enough for most budget-tier gamers. The card is currently priced at 1299 RMB which doesn’t help its case considering the GUNNIR Intel Arc A380 Photon can be bought for the same price and delivers better cooling and also offers better graphics performance.

FIFA 23 Closed Beta Release Date Leak, Code, Invite Time And How To Sign Up

There are a few steps you need to take to sign up and perhaps acquire an entry ticket. The leaked release date, time and code for the FIFA 23 closed beta are quickly approaching

The beautiful game this year is incredibly thrilling. The return of Juventus by EA has been confirmed, the Barclays Women’s Super League will make its debut, and the PC version will eventually be the same as the next-gen versions on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

FIFA 23 Beta Release Date Leak, Code, Invite Time, How To Sign Up

You might be fortunate enough to play next week even though the entire game as well as its early access equivalent is planned to premiere in September.

WHAT DATE WILL THE FIFA 23 BETA BE RELEASED?

The FIFA 23 closed beta is scheduled to launch on August 11th, according to a rumored release date. This information is provided by the frequently trustworthy FUTZone on Twitter in addition to other trustworthy sources like DonkTrading. As of this writing, EA has not, however, confirmed the date.

Despite being unconfirmed, FUTZone was accurate in predicting the game’s release date of September 30th before EA’s official announcement on July 20th.

Follow the instructions below to register and perhaps receive a FIFA 23 closed beta access code after logging into your EA account:

  • Open your EA account
  • Change region to either United Kingdom or the United States
  • Proceed to email preferences
  • Check the box, Yes, email me about products, news…
  • Under preferred games, select FIFA 22, FIFA 21, FIFA 20, FIFA Competitive Gaming, Ultimate Team, FIFA Mobile and more if you wish
  • Choose your preferred platform between either PlayStation and Xbox
  • selectupdate

Unfortunately, only residents of the UK and North America will have access to the closed beta. The chances of acquiring a code are usually minimal. And if it’s anything like FIFA 22, it will only be available for PlayStation and Xbox. This is sad news.

The release times for the invites to the leaked FIFA 23 closed beta test is 10:00 PT, 13:00 ET, and 18:00 BST on August 10.

This is provided by FIFAUTeam (via JayJay20091). The second round of invitations will be distributed on August 24th, according to the source. None of the aforementioned is official, and this article will be updated if anything changes.

99 percent of Netflix subscribers haven’t tried its games yet

As Netflix continues to build out its portfolio of games, the streamer’s seeing less than 1 percent of its subscribers interact with them on a daily basis. According to data obtained by CNBC from app tracking group Apptopia, Netflix’s games average 1.7 million users per day, a sliver of Netflix’s 221 million subscribers globally.

Apptopia found that Netflix’s games have been downloaded a total of 23.3 million times since Netflix announced a push into mobile gaming in November 2021. The streamer started with just five games, a collection that it has since expanded to over two dozen titles, including a game based on the Exploding Kittens card game, the League of Legends spin off Hextech Mayhemand the strategy title Into the Breach. Netflix also plans on adding a game based on its original series The Queen’s Gambit.

Netflix wants to double its current offering of games to 50 titles by the end of 2022 and has acquired three indie game studios to help it meet this goal. Previous reports show Netflix’s game downloads slowly growing over the course of the (almost) one year that the games have been available.

In January, Apptopia recorded 8 million total game downloads, while data from analytics firm Sensor Tower showed total downloads hitting 13 million in June. Subscribers on Android devices can access and download the games for free from either the Netflix app or Google Play Store, while Apple’s rules require Netflix to direct users on Apple devices to the App Store for downloads.

Netflix reported losing subscribers for the first time in over a decade in April and lost 1.3 million more globally between May and the end of June. The streamer’s collection of games could play an increasingly important role as Netflix reverses the trend on subscriber losses and finds ways to make more money from those subscribers beyond raising prices on the video services they already have. Netflix already plans on rolling out an ad-supported tier by the end of this year and is also exploring ways to crack down on password sharing.

Disclosure: TheVerge recently produced a series with Netflix.
