Polymer blocks pave way to more sustainable construction — ScienceDaily

Firing bricks and making mortar and cement is very costly, but organic chemists at Flinders University are working on more sustainable alternatives — focusing on building materials made from waste products.

In another move into the circular economy, researchers from the Flinders Chalker Lab have used low-cost feedstocks to make lightweight but durable polymer building blocks which can be bonded together with an adhesive-free chemical reaction.

Their latest study tested the strength of these materials and explored ways they can be reinforced in construction.

Matthew Flinders Professor of Chemistry, Justin Chalker, says the need to develop sustainable building materials is increasingly important, with cement, iron and steel production accounting for more than 15% of global COtwo emissions each year.

“In this study, we tested a new type of brick we can make from waste cooking oil, mixed with sulfur and dicyclopentadiene (DCPD). Both sulfur and DCPD are byproducts of petroleum refining.

“The bricks bond together without mortar upon application of a trace amount of amine catalyst.

“All the starting materials are plentiful and can be classified as industrial waste.

“This research is part of a larger effort to move towards a sustainable built environment,” says project leader Professor Chalker.

The Chalker Lab’s new polymer research team at Flinders University’s College of Science and Engineering is collaborating with Clean Earth Technologies for further development. scale-up and possible commercialization.

The latest study, published as a cover feature in a special issue on Sustainability in the journal Macromolecular Chemistry and Physicsexpanded the research to test the new bricks’ mechanical properties and look at ways to reinforce them in construction, including with carbon fiber fillers.

Chalker Lab research associate Dr Maximilian Mann says as well as repurposing waste materials into value-added construction materials, the polymer bricks’ sulfur-sulfur bond means they can be bound together without mortar like traditional building method.

“The bonding in this novel catalytic process is very strong, producing a sustainable construction material with its own mortar which will potentially streamline construction,” Dr Mann says.

First author Paris Pauling says the research is an excellent example of new scientific developments in sustainable materials science.

Destiny 2 Chat Shut Off After Players Abuse It To Crash Games

Over the weekend, Bungie disabled destiny 2‘s in-game text chat across all platforms after trolls discovered a way to use it to crash other players’ games. Now, the chat still remains off and Bungie hasn’t provided an ETA for when it will return.

On Saturday, I hopped online to play some destiny 2 and was hit with a small message telling me in-game text chat had been temporarily disabled across all platforms. I didn’t think much of it as I primarily play on Xbox Series X and don’t really use text chat. But it turns out that a nasty and simple exploit had been discovered in Bungie’s online sci-fi shooter and to avoid players abusing it, Bungie disabled text chat completely.

The exploit, if done properly, allows a troll to crash someone else’s game (or their own game) by simply entering a specific string of text. An example of this can be seen in a video clip uploaded on July 30 by destiny 2 player ritz. (It should be noted the text seen in the video isn’t the entirety of what’s needed to cause the exploit to trigger.)

According to some reports, players were experiencing crashes when playing online in multiplayer, as those areas have public text chat and were vulnerable to this particular exploit. Shortly after its discovery, players began sharing clips of the exploit and reporting it online, leading to Bungie swiftly disabling all text chat in destiny 2 on all platforms. Bungie confirmed this on his Twitter account on July 30.

“We have temporarily disabled text chat on all platforms in destiny 2 while we investigate an issue causing Weasel errors,” tweeted Bungie. “Stay tuned for updates.”

Bungie has a hotfix planned to go live tomorrow following some maintenance today, but there’s been no confirmation from the devs on if this exploit is being fixed in this upcoming patch. Kotaku has reached out to Bungie about the exploit and if it has any updates on when players can expect a fix and for text chat to be turned back on.

Lawn Mowing Simulator Landmark Addition comes to PlayStation

A video game entirely focused on mowing lawns has received an upgrade that allows players to cut grass around the world – virtually of course.

Lawn Mowing Simulator is one of a handful of new video games taking the chores of life and making them fun.

From the new PowerWash Simulatora game where you power wash the dirt from cars and buildings, to Construction Simulatorwhere you take control of diggers and dump trucks – there’s something for everyone.

The Landmark Edition of the game includes a dinosaur theme park to maintain. (Skyhook Games)

Lawn Mowing Simulator: Landmark Edition released on PlayStation and PC this week and now allows players to hop aboard a ride-on mower and maintain the Great British countryside.

In an odd promotion, Five Star Games are allowing people to literally watch grass grow 24/7, with a chance every few hours to win a copy of the game and more. (Five Star Games)

There’s also a new mode that sees you trimming around T-Rex footprints, navigating herds of Brachiosaurus, and keeping up with the movements of other ‘roaming’ dinosaurs, as well as iconic locations such as Stonehenge.

Games like these are considered cozy and therapeutic by gaming communities, with entire social media channels dedicated to their simplicity.

It’s worth noting there’s more to Lawn Mowing Simulator than just mowing lawns.

If you’ve ever dreamed of mowing the lawns around a historic British castle – now’s your chance. (Skyhook Games)

Players must grow their lawn mowing empire, take up jobs, hire staff, upgrade machines, advertise, pretty much everything you need to do in real life to grow a business – minus the financial stress and fear of failure.

Aussie game distributors Five Star Games have taken their game promotion to the next level, creating a live stream on Twitch where you can literally watch grass grow.

While that might not have the same effect as mowing the lawns of a Jurassic theme park, there are a few surprises on the stream that viewers can look out for, including download codes of the game.

God of War: Ragnarok (2022)

The most anticipated video games of 2022 and beyond

The standard edition of Lawn Mowing Simulator is also available on Xbox GamePass.

Spotify wants users to pay for separate ‘Play’ and ‘Shuffle’ buttons – TechCrunch

Spotify is updating its app to address a long-standing user complaint with music playback — but it’s asking customers to pay for the fix. The company announced today it will introduce, at last, a separate Play Button and a Shuffle Button at the top of albums playlists to make it easier to play the music the way you like. This will replace the combined button available before, which had been inconsistent across platforms and frustrating to use. However, streamers may be disappointed to find out that what should be an app update in favor of better usability is oddly being sold to them as a reason to upgrade to Spotify’s paid tier — the company says the new button is only being offered to Spotify Premium subscribers.

This seems a bizarre choice given that customer complaints had correctly identified an issue with the overall design of the Spotify app’s interface and its user experience. As one review posted last year to Spotify’s Community forums had noted, the button offered was even different across Spotify’s apps. On mobile, playlists had the combined Shuffle/Play button, but on the desktop, the button was just a regular Play Button. This was confusing for users who switched between platforms, the post pointed out. The user suggested Spotify simply offer two separate buttons so people could choose how they wanted to stream music, instead of having to tap into Now Playing screen to enable or disable Shuffle mode.

The post received 647 upvotes and pages of comments from others who agreed. It was not the only complaint of this nature on the forum site. Others posted similar requests for separate Play and Shuffle buttons or even different solutions to the same problem. For example, one person asked Spotify to allow users to configure which button appeared in the app to make it a user’s choice.

Spotify has been working on this problem for awhile. It first introduced the Shuffle/Play icon in 2020 to reduce streaming to just a click, it said, and last year made Play Button the default button on all albums for Spotify Premium users (at Adele’s request, as you may recall). With this upgrade, the Play Button will remain the default, and Shuffle will be a separate option across the mobile Spotify experience.

While arguably a minor change to the app — it’s literally just a button — it’s clearly a feature that was in need of a fix in users’ minds not a premium offering. Other major music streaming apps, like Apple Music and Amazon Music, already include separate Play and Shuffle buttons, for instance.

It’s uncommon for app makers to charge for something like a different button, especially when the reason for the change is because users were unhappy with the app’s functionality and design. One somewhat related example could be Twitter’s subscription service, Twitter Blue, which allows users to customize the bottom bar of the app with buttons of their choosing. But in that case, the option is more about personal preference and quick access to favorite features — not usability. Even without paying, Twitter’s features are still easy to get to in the main navigation on the left side of the app.

Spotify tells us the idea to charge for the button has to do with how it perceives the benefits associated with a Premium Subscription. At its core, Premium users are paying for the option to listen to any song they want, on-demand. The button is somewhat of an extension of that, as it’s allowing users to choose to listen on-demand in any way they want.

Diablo Immortal player spends $140,000, can’t match with others

A Diablo Immortal player dropped a heavy amount of money into the game — over $140,000 AUD — and is unable to match up with other players. The reason, the player claims, is that their power level is “so high” that they “literally can’t get a battleground.”

Youtuber “jtisallbusiness” posted a video debating refunding their expenses on Diablo Immortal, which they claim to be over $140,000 AUD. In the video, they said “I can’t do things that I spent money on this character to do, and I have no time frame of when things are going to actually be fixed, or even know if things are going to be fixed because I am the only player in the entire world with this problem.”

Diablo Immortal uses a matchmaking system that bases itself on your character’s power level. Players can spend real money on loot boxes in the game for a chance to win legendary items to increase that power level far beyond what they would obtain by playing the game for free — and spending over $140,000 on a character will bring it beyond what other players can attain.

Jtisallbusiness mentioned that they had requested help from Blizzard via their official forums and through Twitter, but the response they got was lacklustre. The developer stated that it was “aware of the issue,” but nothing has been done since. Thoroughly upset, jtisallbusiness mentioned in their video that they were considering bringing in attorneys to help iron out the business.

Previously, Blizzard CEO Mike Ybarra defended the microtransaction systems in Diablo Immortal, stating that the “vast majority” of players don’t spend any money on the game. “The philosophy was always to lead with great gameplay and make sure that hundreds of millions of people can go through the whole campaign without any costs.”

The expenses needed to “max out” your character haven’t stopped players from spending big on Diablo Immortal. It reached $140 million in revenue in the two months since its release. In other Diablo news, fans of Diablo can secure access to Diablo IV — if they get a tattoo. World famous tattoo artists will be visiting Sydney and Melbourne this September if you’re looking to demonify your skin.

Microsoft negs Activision Blizzard to push through $68.7 billion acquisition

Microsoft is taking an interesting approach to secure regulatory approval for its acquisition of Activision Blizzard. In a recent filing spotted by Rock Paper Shotgun, the company told New Zealand’s Commerce Commission the troubled publisher produces no “must have” games. Yes, you read that right.

“There is nothing unique about the video games developed and published by Activision Blizzard that is a ‘must have’ for rival PC and console video game distributors that give rise to a foreclosure concern,” the company says in the document. Put another way, Microsoft believes owning the rights to best-selling Activision Blizzard franchises like Call of Duty won’t prevent rivals like Sony from competing against it.

At first glance, that would seem to be a nonsensical argument to make about a company Microsoft plans to spend $68.7 billion to acquire. All the same, it’s a claim the tech giant is making in response to its rivals. In a filing with Brazilian regulators, Sony called Call of Duty “an essential game” and an AAA title “that has no rival.” It argues the franchise is so popular that it influences the consoles people buy. Sony is likely speaking from experience. In 2015, the company announced an agreement with Activision that saw some Call of Duty content arrive on PlayStation consoles first.

Downplaying the importance of Call of Duty is just one of the ways Microsoft has tried to placate regulators. In February, the company pledged it would continue to make the franchise available on PlayStation consoles beyond the end of any agreements Sony and Activision had in place before the acquisition was announced. More recently, the company announced a labor neutrality agreement with the Communications Workers of America, which has been organizing video game workers across the industry.

YouTuber Builds Gaming PC Out Of Working Toilet

A YouTuber built a PC out of a working toilet, creating what might be the first toilet capable of both handling your waste and playing Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. What a world we live in!

As spotted by Eurogamer, YouTuber Basically Homeless cut a deal with the electronics store Microcenter to create a gaming PC inside of an actual toilet, complete with all the plumbing and water that entails. It’s a wild thing, but not surprising. You see, for as long as we have had toilets and video games, many have tried to combine them. Even I have heard that siren’s call and attempted to poop and game at the same time. Countless others do so while playing games on their phones.

But Basically Homeless didn’t want to simply bring a Switch or phone or even a Steam Deck into the bathroom. Instead, he wanted to create a setup that would let him play 120hz FPS shooters with a mouse and keyboard while sitting on a toilet. And in his video documenting the entire processI was shocked both by the end results and the lack of planning.

Basically Homeless

The way this thing works is one half of the tank contains all the toilet bits and bobs along with the water. Then he built a “Water Wall” out of plexiglass and glue. On the other side of the wall are all the computer parts. The idea was to keep them separate, letting you flush the working toilet while playing games. Also, built into the lid is a fan to help keep the PC cool.

It probably won’t surprise you to learn that the first time he connected the toilet to the water supply his hacked-together “Water Wall” failed and he ended up having to use a whole can of Flexseal inside the tank to protect the valuable PC electronics. However, now that he’s gotten everything working (including the RGB lighting), the finished PC/toilet hybrid is oddly impressive. Thanks to a large cutout in the front, you can see both the functioning toilet and the running PC.

According to Basically Homeless, he had to learn basic plumbing and how to cut porcelain to create this bizarre PC. The end result is both a conversation starter and a man who can now fix his own toilet. Truly a win, win situation.

Game Broke After Spending $100,000

A screenshot of Diablo Immortals shows jtisallbusiness' Barbarian fighter.

screenshot: Blizzard / jtisallbusiness / Kotaku

Devil Immortal‘s pay to win mechanics have been controversial since the game launched back in June. Now they’ve also apparently broken the game for at least one YouTuber who reportedly spent over $100,000 on beefing up his Barbarian character. The player’s win rate is seemingly so good the game won’t even match him against other players, torpedoing his prospects of competing in the latest Rite of Exile end game event.

over the weekend, Devil Immortal YouTuber jtisallbusiness asked viewers if he should try to refund his $100,000 account as a result of the issue. He claimed that he spent so much money immediately following the game’s release that he was able to easily overpower almost every opponent in the game’s PVP Battlegrounds mode. As a result, he had hundreds of wins and only a few losses, pumping up his MMR (match-making rank) so high it became impossible to queue with anyone else.

“I would say it’s probably around, somewhere around 48 to 72 hours somewhere in between that of only trying to queue for a Battleground and never being able to get one,” he said.

Jtisallbusiness contacted Blizzard about the issue almost a month ago, and said he was eventually told the problem would be addressed in a couple weeks. Now, however, his clan of him OneTimes is competing in the Rite of Exile to defend its Immortals title against other players as part of Devil Immortals elaborate end game. The only problem is Jtisallbusiness can’t join them. Part of the questline requires participating in a standard Battlegrounds PVP match, but because of his matchmaking limbo he was unable to qualify.

“So basically I’m stuck as the clan leader in the Immortals clan not being able to queue us up for Rite of Exile at all,” he said. “I can’t do anything about it.” Adding to his frustration from him is the fact that he’s trying to make money off Devil Immortal as a streamer and content maker, an effort now seemingly stymied by his early spending spree (other videos are devoted to showing off his collection).

For many other players in the community, however, it’s a chef’s kiss moment for everything they hate about the game’s monetization. “Congratulations, you just ‘won’ in a p2w game,” reads one of the top comments on his YouTube video discussing the issue. “Can’t complain about that, you got what you paid for.” Others shared similar sentiments, and the video itself was downvoted thousands of times.

Players on Reddit, where links to it were being passed around, were equally unmoved. “I know it’s his money from him and people can do whatever they want with theirs but come the fuck on man. 100k?! On Devil Immortal?!” wrote one person. “When someone’s Devil character is worth close to my entire mortgage,” wrote another.

Blizzard and jtisallbusiness didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. It’s also not yet clear how the situation will affect the rest of his clan, which includes players he said have each poured thousands of dollars of their own into the game. Once the Rite of Exile is completed, the top 30 challengers are pitted against a single Immortal who is transformed into a raid boss. One thing seems certain: It will not be Jtisallbusiness.

‘Stray’ Speedrunners Are Already Beating The Game In Under An Hour

I had a great time with stray, so much so that I stuck it out long enough to earn the catinum…sorry, platinum trophy. The last trophy I snapped up was for finishing the game in under two hours on my second run. I’ll admit, I was sweating things a bit toward the end, but I finished with around 15 minutes to spare.

MORE FROM FORBES‘Stray’ Has Trophies That Could Leave You Tearing Your Fur Out

There are no such concerns for players who have been studiously plotting the best routes through stray, though. Some speedrunners are already able to complete the game in under an hour. As spotted by GamesRadara French runner named Erims now holds the record of 54:21 on PC (they have the PS5 record too at a significantly longer 1:12:18).

That zippy time includes the length of various unskippable cutscenes. However, Erims does take advantage of some glitches, including wall clips and near-instant dialogue skips. The glitchless records, according to speedrun.com, stand at 1:19:06 on PC, 1:23:21 on PS5 and 1:39:33 on PS4. With a few optimizations, I think that PS4 record is prime for the taking.

I’m both impressed by the ways players are able to break a game that hasn’t even been out for two weeks and how they’re able to find optimal routes through the entire thing. The glitchless runs are certainly putting my speedrun time to shame.
