MIT boffins make AI chips a million times faster than brains • The Register

inbrief In the early days of AI research it was hoped that once electronics had equaled the ability of human synapses many problems would be solved. We’ve now gone way beyond that.

A team at MIT reports that it has built AI chips that mimic synapses, but are a million times faster, and are additionally massively more energy efficient than current designs. The inorganic material is also easy to fit into current chip-building kit.

“Once you have an analog processor, you will no longer be training networks everyone else is working on. You will be training networks with unprecedented complexities that no one else can afford to, and therefore vastly outperform them all. In other words, this is not a faster car, this is a spacecraft,” said lead author and MIT postdoc Murat Onen.

“The speed certainly was surprising. Normally, we would not apply such extreme fields across devices, in order to not turn them into ash. But instead, protons ended up shuttling at immense speeds across the device stack, specifically a million times faster compared to what we had before. And this movement doesn’t damage anything, thanks to the small size and low mass of protons. It is almost like teleporting.”

Now that’s some intelligent design.

Why results from machine learning models are difficult to reproduce

Princeton computer scientists Sayash Kapoor and Arvind Narayanan blame data leakage and inadequate testing methods for making machine-learning research difficult to reproduce by other scientists and say they are part of the reason results seem better than they are.

Data leakage occurs when the data used to train an algorithm can leak into its testing; when its performance is assessed the model seems better than it actually is because it has already, in effect, seen the answers to the questions. Sometimes machine learning methods seem more effective than they are because they aren’t tested in more robust settings.

An AI algorithm trained to detect pneumonia in chest X-rays trained on data taken from older patients might be less accurate when it’s run on images taken from younger patients, for example, Nature reported. Kapoor and Narayanan believe practitioners need to clearly describe how the training and testing datasets do not overlap.

Models aren’t sufficient by themselves, however, the code needs to be readily available too, they argued in a paper [PDF] released on arXiv.

AI contract between Palantir and US Army Research Lab extended

The US Army Research Lab has extended its contract with Palantir to continue developing AI technologies for its combatant commands, worth $99.9 million over two years.

Both parties began working together in 2018. Palantir’s software is used to build and manage data pipelines for platforms used by the Armed Services, combatant commands, and special operators. These resources, in turn, power machine learning systems deployed by various military units for combat.

“We’re looking forward to fielding our newest ML, Edge, and Space technologies alongside our US military partners,” Shannon Clark, senior veep of Innovation, said in a statement.

“These technologies will enable operators in the field to leverage AI insights to make decisions across many fused domains. From outer space to the sea floor, and everything in-between.” ®

Scissor-doored MG Cyberster EV showcases the future of sports cars

Chinese brand MG has previewed its new Cyberster roadster in a new video, with the new electric roadster set to arrive before 2024.

Posting the video on social media, MG showcased the future EV’s sleek body styling, electric canvas roof, yoke steering wheel and two-tone seats.

Elements of the car such as the rear lights have been designed using inspiration from the Union Jack flag, highlighting the brand’s British past.

The video also suggested the drop-top EV could have scissor doors.

MG’s two-seater electric sports car was first previewed in 2021 and was only considered for production after 5,000 potential buyers expressed an interest in the concept.

The Cyberster’s recently revealed design patents show that the roadster will effectively serve as an electric rival to the Mazda MX-5, while competing with other ICE-powered sports cars.

MG has offered no insight into the Cyberster’s powertrain, pricing or performance, but said its concept was based on a bespoke EV architecture, offering a claimed range of 497 miles and a 0-62mph time of less than 3.0 secs.

The Chinese firm recently unveiled the MG 4 hatchback which will arrive in the UK at the end of the year. The MG 4 will be the first of a number of EVs based on the new Modular Scalable Platform – from MG’s parent firm SAIC – which is likely to be used by the Cyberster.

This could mean that the future roadster could be offered with either a 120kW or 150kW single-motor, rear-wheel-drive powertrain, with a range topping 330kW, dual-motor set-up also an option.

The MG 4 is available with either a 51kWh or 64kWh battery which should offer a range of more than 200 miles.

Blizzard Asks Overwatch Players If They’d Pay AU$64 For A Skin

Those dastardly loot boxes containing randomized goodies might be a thing of the past come Overwatch 2‘s launch later this year, but a recent survey suggests the hero shooter’s monetization may become more aggressive elsewhere.

apparently, Overwatch 2’s in-game store might charge you up to $US45 ($AU64) for an individual skin–or at least, Blizzard appears to be testing the idea. Recently, Twitter user porter gauge uploaded screenshots from a survey their friend received from Overwatch asking them how much money they’d be willing to pay for skins and other rewards in Overwatch 2. The survey asked players whether they were “very likely,” “somewhat likely,” “neither likely or unlikely,” “somewhat unlikely,” or “very unlikely” to be inclined to purchase new rewards in the game.

Image: BlizzardImage: Blizzard

The asking prices in the survey are as follows:

  • Mythic Skin–$US44.99 ($AU64)
  • Legendary Skin Bundle (including weapon charm, player icon, victory pose, voice line, name card, and spray)–$US29.99 ($AU42)
  • Legendary Skin–$US24.99 ($AU35)
  • Emote Highlight Intro Souvenir–$US19.99 ($AU28)
  • Weapon Char– $US9.99 ($AU14)
  • 3 Spray Bundle–$US4.99 ($AU7)

“This survey is entirely intended to better understand player preferences for different types of Overwatch 2 cosmetics,” an Overwatch spokesperson told Kotaku via email. “Prices displayed in the survey were randomized per user and are not indicative of final pricing. We plan to share details on our Shop and Battle Pass system closer to our Oct. 4 launch.”

Since the survey emails were sent out, its asking prices haven’t gone over well with players.

“Yo, I’d literally at any price would prefer buying Overwatch 2 instead of it being free to play with money grabs everywhere,” one Twitter user said.

“And here I thought I was already getting gouged in halo-infinite lmao,” another Twitter user said.

“I know some people [are] going to defend the prices and say ‘Don’t buy etc it is[ a free to play] game,’” a Reddit user said. “People like you who choose to defend this crap is why the gaming industry [is] going into [an] abyss.”

Image: BlizzardImage: Blizzard

During the Overwatch 2 “reveal event” –which detailed the game’s seasonal roadmap and featured a cinematic trailer for its newest tank character, Junker Queen–the Overwatch team clarified that Overwatch 2 won’t have any loot boxes. The event teased that a battle pass and an in-game store is coming to the game.

Back in the old Overwatch days, players unlocked skins, emotes, voice lines, and sprays by leveling up and unlocking loot boxes. If players wanted to unlock a specific skin, like say the Totally ’80s Zarya skin (her only good one), they would either have to accumulate enough in-game coin from receiving duplicate items in loot boxes to unlock the skin from her character gallery or run the gamut of purchasing a bunch of loot boxes in hopes that the skin would be among their spoils. Overwatch also has a dedicated in-game store where players can purchase loot boxes with real currency. In comparison to Overwatch 2‘s asking price for one mythic skin, buying 50 loot boxes cost players $US39.99 ($56), exactly five dollars less.

Chances are the prices of Overwatch 2 skins in the survey won’t be the final price come the game’s release later this year and that it was the Overwatch team’s way to gauge how much players are willing to spend on cosmetic items. However, it’s not a good indication when a game is asking you to cough up the same amount of money for a full-game for a single skin.

Overwatch 2 is scheduled to release on October 4.

In a first, new device developed to investigate origins of Milky Way

In an interesting achievement, scientists have supercharged the William Herschel Telescope (WHT) in La Palma, Spain with new technology that will reveal how our galaxy has formed in unprecedented detail. The supercharged telescope will now be able to survey 1,000 stars per hour until it has cataloged a total of five million.

According to the reports, the super-fast mapping device linked up to WHT will analyze the make-up of each star and the speed at which it travels. This information tracked, will help scientists understand how our Milky Way galaxy assembled over billions of years.

In efforts to track the development of the Milky Way, Professor Gavin Dalton of Oxford University has spent more than a decade developing the instrument, named as ‘Weave’.

Weave installed on WHT

Weave has been charged on the WHT in order to track the movement of stars. The developed instrument, WHT Enhanced Area Velocity Explorer (Weave), sits high on a mountain top on the Spanish Canary Island of La Palma. Notably, the newly developed instrument weave has 80,000 separate parts and is being considered a miracle of engineering in today’s era.

The Milky Way galaxy is a dense spiral swirl of nearly 400 billion stars, but it took billions of years to form a galaxy as it eventually started out as a relatively small collection of stars. Multiple small galaxies came together over years to form one galaxy.

With the help of weave, scientists will be able to calculate the speed, direction, age and composition of each star. The device also creates a motion picture of stars moving in the Milky Way by watching it. According to Professor Dalton, with the help of extrapolating backward, it will be possible to reconstruct the entire formation of the Milky Way in detail.

According to the professor, the device will be able to trace the galaxies that have been absorbed while the spiral galaxy was being built up. The instrument will help us understand how galaxies are formed. It is considered that weave is going to make big revelations and answer queries that astronomers and scientists have been trying to find for years.

Riot MMO Lead Greg ‘Ghostcrawler’ Street Explains Why They Announced Early, Expectations, and Change

When it comes to game announcements, they are usually done when there is substantial work already completed and rumors are already flying. This is part of the point of why Riot Games MMO lead Greg “Ghostcrawler” Street took to Twitter to answer questions about why Riot announced that it was working on an mmo and when more “real” info is coming.

Street says that announcing their plans early was done for strategic reasons by the CEO. They wanted to “low-key announce to help with recruiting (we need a lot of MMO vets), to excite players, and because we thought it would likely leak anyway.” Even though there were already people already wanting a Riot MMO and seeing the developments and investment in narrative and more shared stories coming and wondering if it would come to pass, announcing themselves did put the momentum and focus on Riot.

Yet, you have to be careful with early announcements. As Street continues, noting that “The other big risk of announcing early is sustaining the momentum. It’s hard to keep players engaged and excited for years”. This decision by Riot to announce without the usual work completed, teasers ready, promo in swing from the start does a couple of things. It does risk people getting bored, sure, but it also helps control expectations, especially if the team finds they have to make major pivots from any plans they had in place.

Saying that they haven’t even solidified 100% of their direction yet with confidence is something we don’t normally see. Important too for a game that, with nearly nothing known, expectations are already high, and Street knows you want to know more and understands the feeling. The team wants to talk about it more, but it’s still not time yet.

He ends with gratitude and empathy for those who want to know more, putting a sense of trust in the community to know how to deliver effective feedback when the time comes. Additionally, I tease the eventual team announcement too.

“I couldn’t do it without this amazing team that we have assembled. Some of the names you know and some you don’t know yet and more will join all the time.”

Hackers stole passwords for accessing 140,000 payment terminals

Hackers had access to dashboards used to remotely manage and control thousands of credit card payment terminals manufactured by digital payments giant Wiseasy, a cybersecurity startup told TechCrunch.

Wiseasy is a brand you might not have heard of, but it’s a popular Android-based payment terminal maker used in restaurants, hotels, retail outlets and schools across the Asia-Pacific region. Through its Wisecloud cloud service, Wiseeasy can remotely manage, configure and update customer terminals over the internet.

But Wiseasy employee passwords used for accessing Wiseasy’s cloud dashboards — including an “admin” account — were found on a dark web marketplace actively used by cybercriminals, according to the startup.

Youssef Mohamed, chief technology officer at pen-testing and dark web monitoring startup Buguard, told TechCrunch that the passwords were stolen by malware on the employee’s computers. Mohamed said two cloud dashboards were exposed, but neither were protected with basic security features, like two-factor authentication, and allowed hackers to access nearly 140,000 Wiseasy payment terminals around the world.

Payment systems are frequently targeted by financially driven hackers with the aim of skimming credit card numbers for committing fraud.

Buguard said it first contacted Wiseasy about the compromised dashboards in early July, but efforts to disclose the compromise were met with meetings with executives that were later canceled without warning, and according to Mohamed, the company declined to say if or when the cloud dashboards would be secured.

Screenshots of the dashboards seen by TechCrunch show an “admin” user with remote access to Wiseasy payment terminals, including the ability to lock the device and remotely install and remove apps. The dashboard also allowed anyone to view names, phone numbers, email addresses and access permissions for Wiseasy dashboard users, including the ability to add new users.

Another dashboard view also shows the Wi-Fi name and plaintext password of the network that payment terminals are connected to.

Mohamed said anyone with access to the dashboards could control Wiseasy payment terminals and make configuration changes.

When reached by TechCrunch, Wiseasy chief executive Jason Wang would not comment. In a separate email from Wiseasy spokesperson Ocean An, the company confirmed that the issues were remediated and that it had added two-factor authentication to the dashboards.

It’s not clear if the company plans to notify its customers of the security lapse.
