The redesigned Eve Aqua has improved mechanics and a new look to help HomeKit owners keep their gardens well-watered.

Following the release of the all-new Eve Motion, smart home accessory maker Eve Systems is out with its latest product. It has redesigned the Eve Aqua, with a refreshed design and durability improvements.

“Eve Aqua looks gorgeous and makes smart gardening easy, safe and joyful,” says Jerome Gackel, CEO, Eve Systems. “Thread eliminates the need for a digital bridge, while the brass faucet adapter ensures a rock-solid physical connection. And of course, our beautiful Eve app brings it all together, making scheduling, and monitoring consumption, a breeze.”

The new Eve Aqua has an IPX4 resistance rating and runs on a pair of AA batteries. It has a sleek new space gray body with a matte black front. The physical watering button has increased in size to make it easier to control.

It requires no bridge outside of your existing Home Hub and supports up to seven watering sessions per day.

On the inside, Eve has upgraded it to a brass faucet connector and magnetic valve that provides increased durability, helps prevents leaks, and is near-silent when opening or closing.

Like the second-generation Eve Aqua, the new model is able to connect via Bluetooth as well as Thread. This marks the 14th product Eve has released with support for Thread.

When Matter is released this fall, Eve Aqua (third-generation) will be updated for free to support the new standard and be compatible with other smart home platforms.

Overwatch 2 Could Start Trialling $45 Skins

Overwatch 2 is officially going to be free-to-play, which is great news for the game’s predicted concurrent players at launch – but some long-term fans aren’t so enthused. There are a lot of nerves that the fact the hero shooter won’t be making its income from the price of entry means that Blizzard could turn to shadier means to leech cash out of their fans.

Though Blizzard isn’t expected to make use of loot boxes in the upcoming sequel, its reluctance to let go of the practice in the first game doesn’t exactly spell good news for players who are trying to simply enjoy the game without being forced to shell out. And now, it looks like Blizzard is starting to think about really pushing its luck in Overwatch 2.

Will Blizzard Introduce $45 Skins In Overwatch 2?

According to some fans, a survey is being sent out to Overwatch players asking them if they’d be willing to fork out $45 for a Mythic grade cosmetic skin. Guess what they think about it…

The survey was first noted by Twitter user Portergauge – saying that their friend had been sent the questionnaire that indicates a severe uptick from Blizzard. It asks how likely the user would be to pay $44.99 for a Mythic Skin, a Legendary Skin for $24.99, a collection of 3 sprays for $4.99, and a weapon charm for $9.99.

This is something that a lot have fans have been nervous could be coming toOverwatch 2and it’s not exactly a great sign despite only being a theoretical survey – and now Blizzard has had to respond.

Blizzard Responds To Overwatch Skin Controversy

In a response issued to IGN, Blizzard has commented on what the survey actually means for Overwatch 2. “This survey is entirely intended to better understand player preferences for different types of Overwatch 2 cosmetics,” the statement reads. “Prices displayed in the survey were randomized per user and are not indicative of final pricing. We plan to share details on our shop and battle pass system closer to our Oct. 4 launch.”

Though it’s not a direct reflection of the skin pricing that’s yet to come, it’s still a little unnerving to see our worst fears for the game’s cosmetics come to life in an official survey. Here’s hoping Blizzard is good on its word, but given the shady dealings of developers and publishers in the past, we wouldn’t hold our breath on this one.

Linus Torvalds says he’s been waiting a ‘long time’ for this Linux laptop option

zd-software-development-bundle.jpg

Linus Torvalds has announced Linux 5.19, and this time released a version of Linux from an Arm-based Apple MacBook running Asahi Linux.

Torvalds says Linux 5.19 contains “nothing really interesting” and a “lot of random stuff”.

The most interesting thing about the release, according to Torvalds, is the fact he used an Arm64 development platform. Torvalds has been keen on using an Apple M1 MacBook Air, which he’s previously said would be “almost perfect, except for the OS.”

Last year the Asahi Linux project was working to bring the Arch Linux distro to Apple’s M1 architecture. But key Linux maintainer Greg Kroah-Hartman (gregkh) predicted it would be difficult, as no one outside of Apple had the official specifications for its Arm chips.

SEE: Best Windows laptop 2022: Top notebooks compared

“For ten years or so I’d be complaining about the fact that it’s really, really hard to find ARM hardware that is usable for development. They exist, but they have certainly not been real competition for x86 so far,” Torvalds said shortly after Apple Silicon announced.

Apple’s Arm hardware and a viable Linux OS for it has changed the status of Arm as a development platform, according to Torvalds.

“It’s something I’ve been waiting for for a long time, and it’s finally reality, thanks to the Asahi team. We’ve had Arm64 hardware around running Linux for a long time, but none of it has really been usable as a development platform until now,” wrote Torvalds on Sunday.

“It’s the third time I’m using Apple hardware for Linux development – I did it many years ago for PowerPC development on a PPC970 machine. And then a decade+ ago when the Macbook Air was the only real thin-and-lite around. And now as an arm64 platform.”

Torvalds doesn’t clarify what Apple Mac model he’s currently using but does confirm it’s a laptop, so it’s possible he’s using Apple’s new M2 MacBook Air but also possible it’s the M1 MacBook Air.

He cautioned he hadn’t used the Apple hardware for “real work” yet, but would now get to try the Linux kernel on Arm64 the next time he’s on the road.

“Not that I’ve used it for any real work, I literally have only been doing test builds and boots and now the actual release tagging. But I’m trying to make sure that the next time I travel, I can travel with this as a laptop and finally dogfooding the Arm64 side too,” wrote Torvalds.

As for Asahi, the project last month released an update that brought support for Apple’s Mac Studio, Bluetooth and M2 support.

Torvalds notes that the next version of the Linux kernel will likely be 6.0 because he’s “starting to worry about getting confused by big numbers again.”

No Apex August starts with a lot of people playing Apex Legends

August is here and with it comes the planned boycott of apex legends. The plan gained steam near the middle of season 13 on Reddit and Twitter among disgruntled Apex players. The hashtag #NoApexAugust gained mobility, with players hoping to force Respawn to reckon with broken legend abilities, hit registration issues, cheating, and more long-standing problems like the game’s audio.

But now that it’s officially Aug. 1… well, it doesn’t seem like many people have actually stopped playing Apex at there.

While there’s no way to tell exactly how many people are playing Apex across all the platforms the game is available on, Steam Charts is a good way to gauge how popular or unpopular a game is, as one of the most far-reaching and popular PC platforms to play games. And according to that platform, Apex is just as popular as ever.

At the time of writing, Apex is the fifth-most popular game on Steam by concurrent players, with over 300,000 people playing the game. That’s almost double the number of people playing the sixth-most popular game, Grand Theft Auto V.

A lot of that probably has to do with Respawn fixing a lot of the issues that #NoApexAugust cited as a reason for boycotting the game. Loba’s teleporter bracelet has finally been corrected, as have the maddening hit registration issues on Wraith when she comes out of her ability usage. The game even may have added a new anti-cheat system in the latter half of the season.

With a new season coming up and a host of map and weapon changes coming in season 14, it seems like the #NoApexAugust movement ended before it actually started. It’s possible that a more concerted effort comes from players as the month wears on, but for now, Apex is back on the menu for August.

Season 14 of Apex kicks off on Aug. 9.

CSGO August 1 patch resets all players’ ranks with matchmaking fix

CS:GO is undergoing a major rank reset yet again after Valve pushed “multiple changes to the competitive matchmaking algorithm” in the game’s August 1 patch. All players will have to win a game to see their new rank, which has likely changed a few tiers.

CS:GO’s in-game matchmaking queues, especially for competitive, are seen as a bit of a meme. The matchmaker can often struggle to find balanced games, and players ranks are often skewed to the low side.

This isn’t helped by the presence of third-party programs like FACEIT or ESEA often taking the very competitive players off the public queues.

However, Valve is trying to entice players to push for Global Elite in CS:GO by making some major adjustments to in-game competitive matchmaking. In doing so, everyone has had their ranks reset somewhat.

“Typically when we ship changes to CS:GO’s matchmaking system, the adjustments are small enough that we don’t include them in our release notes,” developers told players on August 1. “However, today’s update affects all CS:GO players so it requires some explanation.”

“When you launch CS:GO, you’ll notice that your Skill Group is not displayed–you’ll have to win one more match to reveal your Skill Group. Most of you will notice a change to your Skill Group, but some of you may find that you were already in the right place.”

While Valve didn’t specify the exact matchmaking changes — only that there were “multiple changes to the competitive matchmaking algorithm” — players are hoping it can fix some of the issues with how skewed ranks are.

It’s not the first drastic rank reset CS:GO has gone under either. Valve pushed forward one very early in the game’s existence after players found themselves with highly-inflated ranks. Since that adjustment, players have been skewed very heavily towards Silver and Gold Nova.

To find out exactly where you’ll land, you need to win one competitive game. After you do that, your new Skill Group will be revealed.

On top of the matchmaking changes, Valve also updated the cannons on Ember as part of the CS:GO August 1 patch. You can find the full notes below.

CSGO August 1 patch notes

Miscellaneous

  • Multiple changes to the competitive matchmaking algorithm, which will require Skill Groups to be recalibrated for accuracy. Your Skill Group will not be visible until you win your next match.

  • Game instructor floating hints are disabled in competitive matches.

The Future Of… General Practice • The Medical Republic

Soon you’ll be able to consult your GP 24 hours a day, through the magic of computers. And brains in vats.

Welcome to The Future Of series.

In this week’s episode we’re going to be looking at the future of general practice.

One day you won’t need to drive or walk or even take a helicopter to see your GP. Bricks and mortar like this will become a thing of the past.

In fact the only thing you’ll need is one of these.

That’s right, it’s a computerxenerrarrium. Or “computer” as its better known. The computer will allow you to speak with your doctor when you are seriously ill, without ever having to leave the comfort of your own living room.

Charles Babbage invented the first computer tens of decades ago and called it the difference engine. The difference engine was used to calculate polynomial functions. Apart from Charles Babbage every body else thought that polynomial functions and the difference engine were really boring.

You couldn’t even use it to play Pong.

But nowadays, you can do almost anything you like on a computer. You can even watch other people having intercourse.

The Future Of spoke with Geoff Benzos, the brain-daddy of Amazin.com, who believes that computers will forge the future of General Practice.

In an exclusive interview Geoff told The Future Of: “Late one evening I was in my office when a book shelf fell on top of me. I was trapped under it for three days with only the Reader’s Digest and a ham sandwich for company. Ever since then I’ve had a morbid fear of book-shops, and ham. And so I made it my life’s ambition to destroy every single book shop on the planet, which is why I founded Amazin.com.”

Since then the company has continued to grow and diversify. Geoff has been to outer space, where luckily there aren’t any book shops, and he’s even started buying up GP practices and on-line pharmacies in the United States.

We asked Geoff to explain the basic concepts that underpin Amazin’s vision for Australian healthcare.

“Once Amazin.com has bought up all the general practices in the whole of Australia we plan to smash them all up with a wrecking ball, set fire to them and grind their ashes into the dirt.

“Once we’ve done that we’ll surgically remove the doctors’ brains and wire them up to the internet. Patients will then be able to interface with their GP remotely at any time of day or night!”

This is one of the GPs’ brains floating in nutrient jelly. The GP’s brain is screaming “Arhhhhcchhhhhch!” which is future-speak for “How can I help you today?”

Geoff believes that his system will improve accessibility and patients’ overall level of satisfaction with general practice.

But what do the patients themselves think? The Future Of met Greg.

Greg can’t get out much because he has a very rare condition which causes him to compulsively play 1970s board games.

“I have to play Connect 4 and Battleship for at least 18 hours a day,” Greg told The Future Series. “But thanks to Amazin.com I can now use the app to speak directly with my doctor’s brain and get my medication delivered straight to my door. I can also order spare Hungry Hippos parts from Amazin, so Geoff and his team from him certainly get the thumbs-up from me! ”

One day it won’t just be Connect 4 addicts like Greg who’ll benefit from this new approach, it will be all of humanity.

The future’s bright, the future’s Amazin!

next week on The Future Of: can bats really predict the weather? and we’ll be asking a computer if she can tell the difference between a big happy cat and a small angry dog.

VMLY&R Australia and New Zealand, Squeak E. Clean Studios Recruit For Aussie Navy

VMLY&R Australia and New Zealand, Squeak E. Clean Studios Recruit For Aussie Navy

Global audio company Squeak E. Clean Studios and agencies VMLY&R Australia and New Zealand created a challenge which serves as a sophisticated recruitment effort for the Australian Navy.

Squeak E. Clean Studios’ head of sound in Melbourne, Paul Le Couteur, converted an image into sound and then embedded that into an audio message complete with voice and sound effects which challenged prospective Navy recruits to find the hidden visual message. The coded message appealed to these would-be intelligence professionals who had to recognize the puzzle and then find the tools required to solve it.

To reveal the hidden missive, the audio, discovered by only the most clever, had to be processed in a spectrogram, which is often used in sound production to repair background noise, crackles, hums and glitches or to isolate elements within a sound file. This is the same technology used by the Australian Navy to intercept, analyze and identify threats at sea. The message connected a tech audience to Navy intelligence roles and targeted the narrow field of intelligence professionals suited to work in the Navy.

This behind-the-scenes film explains “The Audio Ad You Can See.”

Study finds saturation in images is key to marketing menu items — ScienceDaily

An appealing photo of a pizza or other menu item can help a restaurant increase sales — especially if the right filter is used, a new study suggests.

Photos high in color saturation make food look fresher and tastier to viewers, which increases their willingness to order the menu items, researchers found.

Color saturation refers to the intensity of the color in the image — the vividness and richness of the reds and greens and blues.

But how well color saturation works to make food appealing depends on the visual distance of the food in the photo — and even on whether consumers plan to dine alone or with others.

In the cutthroat restaurant business, these results provide a simple method to increase sales, said Stephanie Liu, lead author of the study and associate professor of hospitality management at The Ohio State University.

“On Instagram, it means using the ‘X-Pro II’ filter on your food photos rather than the ‘Earlybird’ filter,” Liu said. “It is not difficult and doesn’t cost a tell me, so it is an easy win for restaurant marketers.”

The study was published online recently in the Journal of Business Research.

The researchers did two online studies.

In one study, 267 participants were asked to imagine themselves browsing through options on an online food ordering platform.

They were shown photos of a poke bowl, a Hawaiian dish featuring chunks of raw, marinated fish, vegetables and sauce over rice. They were from a fictitious restaurant named Poke Kitchen.

Study participants were randomly assigned to view one of the four different photos with either high or low color saturation and either close or farther away visual distance.

The photos with high color saturation were edited with professional graphic design software to be 130% more saturated than the low-saturation photos. The up-close photos were 130% larger in radius and appeared closer to the observer than the more distant photo.

Participants were asked to rate how fresh the food in each photo looked, how tasty it looked and how likely they would be to purchase it.

The food in the more highly saturated photos looked fresher and tastier to participants, and that led them to be more likely to purchase the food, results showed.

But color saturation had a stronger effect when the food appeared more distant in the photos, Liu said.

“When the food is shown close up, it is already easy for viewers to imagine how fresh and tasty the food would be,” she said. “Color saturation is not as necessary.”

The second study involved 222 online participants. In this case, the participants were asked to imagine they were browsing Instagram and came across images of pizza from a fictitious restaurant near their home named Pizza City. They were shown photos either high or low in color saturation.

People in the study were also told they would either be eating alone or with family that night and were again asked to rate the pizza on perceived freshness and taste and on whether they would likely purchase the menu item.

As in the previous study, the food in the color-saturated photo was always seen as fresher and tastier and one that people would be more likely to buy. But that effect was stronger for people who were told they would be eating alone and weaker for those who would be eating with family.

“When people are eating with others, the social experience is a big part of what people look forward to,” Liu said.

“But when they anticipate eating alone, they focus more on the food itself. They want the food to be fresher and tastier and that’s why color saturation is more important in this context.”

These findings are more important now than ever before, with people ordering online and looking at photos to help them decide what to eat, Liu said.

“Restaurants have to post pictures of their food on social media and online ordering platforms,” she said.

“They should be paying as much attention, or maybe more, to the photos they post as they do to the text. Color saturation is one key element they need to focus on.”

Co-authors on the study were Laurie Luorong Wu of Temple University, Xi Yu of the City University of Macau and Huiling Huang of the University of Macau in China. Xi Yu and Huiling Huang are recent doctoral graduates of the hospitality management program at Ohio State.

Apex Legends plans out gifting system, cross-platform progression, and Charge Rifle nerfs

At a recent preview event for Apex Legends Season 14: Hunted, Respawn Interactive spoke about some of the back-end changes it is making to the game past this huge update.

One of the most requested features is cross-progression, the ability to play on either PC, Xbox, Switch or PlayStation and level up your account — and we can confirm that this is in the works. Design director Evan Nikolich spoke candidly about wanting to play on his Switch while he travels, and use that progression on his PC when he gets home.

Apex Legends wasn’t built with this in mind — when Apex launched back in 2019, cross-progression was not a thing developers planned for usually — so it will take time to implement correctly. The team is unknown, however, and believes it will get it working in the future.

Another requested feature is “gifting”. Theoretically, this will allow players to gift skins, voice lines, and even Apex Coins to your friends — if, for example, you happen to have a bunch of Wattson skins that you never use, you could trade with someone that has something you want .

Lastly, the Charge Rifle was talked about briefly, due to how popular it became in Season 13. While Respawn has no plans to touch the rifle in Season 14, the developer is looking at what it can do to make it “less spiky”. But for fans of the Charge Rifle, you can rest easy knowing that for Season 14, it most likely won’t receive any changes.
