“10 on the trot” but are Magpies genuine premiership contenders?

Collingwood will find themselves at least one game clear inside the top four at the end of Round 20 after they picked up their 10th straight win with a six-point victory over Port Adelaide on Saturday.

With a win-loss record of 14-5, the Magpies may only have to win one more game from their last three to earn a double-chance and give themselves a genuine shot at contending for a premiership.

Having finished 17th last season, the rise has been a remarkable one under rookie coach Craig McRae, with a top-eight finish out of the question at the start of the season.

Now with a final spot locked up, the question has been asked of whether Collingwood could genuinely lift the cup on the last Saturday of September, something no one thought would even be a possibility with this group six months ago.

Tony Jones, Kane Cornes, Matthew Lloyd and Damian Barrett discussed how far the Magpies can go in 2022 on Nine’s Sunday Footy Show.

jones: “Can Collingwood win the premiership?”

Cornes: “I’m a skeptic, I’m more of a skeptic and I don’t think they’ll be there on Preliminary Final weekend.

“I think if they win a final that’s an extraordinary year, I’m looking forward to the test of the next three weeks.

“I’m concerned around their forward line and a lack of key targets there.

“I think their defense is a bit loose with (Jeremy) Howe and (Darcy) Moore.

jones: “But they’ve own 10 on the trot.”

Cornes: “You asked me the question, I’m answering it honestly, I don’t think they’ll be there on Prelim Final week, I could be wrong.”

Lloyd: “What if they beat Melbourne on Friday night?

“I’m with Kane at the moment and I’m expecting Melbourne to win but if they win that one then everything changes.”

Cornes: “I think you’re right on that so I’m looking forward to the test.

“Can they win the premiership?”

jones: “Yes, because they play without fear, and I don’t think they listen to this sort of stuff (doubters).”

One reason why Magpies fans are becoming bullish on their chances is the return of stars Jordan De Goey and Brodie Grundy from injury in the lead-in to finals.

Playing in his first game since Round 16, Lloyd was impressed with how the midfielder looked in a dynamic performance against the Power.

“We talked about De Goey earlier and how big he could be,” Lloyd said.

“Some players play at their best when they’re playing for a contract and he could make a few people nervous again.

“I’m one who was saying, ‘Move him on’, because you probably don’t get enough out of him across a season.

“But when you see games like this where he has 23 disposals, five clearances and kicks a couple of goals, he made a big impact.”

Barrett added that Collingwood has primed De Goey for a finals push with the star undergoing somewhat of a mini pre-season in recent weeks to build his fitness level.

“They did with him through necessity the program the Cats did with Patrick Dangerfield when he wasn’t playing,” Barrett explained.

“They got some fitness into him and he’s returned yesterday and was looking really fit.”

Collingwood will hope to make it 11 in a row when they face Melbourne at the MCG on Friday night.

‘Hold Hasim Rahman Jr. liable’: Jake Paul blasts rival as grudge match canceled

Jake Paul’s has savaged Hasim Rahman Jr. after the fight was called off at the last minute.

The YouTube star was due to fight at Madison Square Garden next weekend but a statement released on Saturday night slammed Rahman for apparently moving the goalposts, The Sun reported.

A statement from Most Valuable Promotions said Rahman’s team tried to change the fight weight from 200lbs to 215lbs.

And it read: “The boxing community must hold Hasim Rahman Jr liable for his lack of professionalism.”

Rahman and his team are said to have offered assurances that he was on track to make 200lbs at the weigh-in on Friday.

Paul claimed Rahman’s team went “as far as to provide a letter signed by a recognized nutritionist that his weight cut was progressing without issue”.

But in the last 48 hours, Rahman had lost less than one pound and the New York State Athletic Commission said it wouldn’t sanction the fight for less than 205 pounds.

Paul’s team claim they were prepared to raise the weight to 200 pounds, but say Rahman indicated he would come in at 215 pounds.

“Upon receiving this new contract Saturday morning, Rahman’s camp indicated for the very first time that he planned to weigh 215lbs. at the official weigh-in and would not agree to

weigh-in at 205 pounds and reporting Most Valuable Promotions that they are pulling out of the fight unless the fight was agreed to at 215 pounds,” the statement read.

“MVP and Jake Paul will not reward someone that has conducted themselves in such a deceiving and calculated manner.

“Therefore, MVP is left with no choice but to cancel the August 6th event. This forced outcome impacts Jake Paul, Amanda Serrano and every other fighter on this card who have trained tirelessly over the past few months for this event.

“The boxing community must hold Hasim Rahman Jr. liable for his lack of professionalism.”

And drastic action was taken with the fight axed and refunds offered to ticket holders and PPV buyers.

Paul was due to fight British reality star and boxer Tommy Fury.

But Fury ran into visa issues and couldn’t fight the YouTuber at Madison Square Garden.

Paul had been sparring with former world champ Chad Dawson in build up to the fight.

He was set for one of the toughest fights of his young boxing career.

This was due to be the sixth professional fight for the younger Paul brother and he is undefeated so far.

Dragons v Cowboys, hair pull, video, score, result, Jaydn Su’A, Luciano Leilua

Dragons back-rower Jaydn Su’A reeled in Luciano Leilua with a hair pull on Sunday, but his side couldn’t rein in the Cowboys, who raced away to secure a 34-8 victory in Kogarah.

The final game of round 20 tossed up a bizarre talking point when Leilua hit a gap in the 54th minute, prompting Su’A to throw out an arm and deny the second-rower with a hair pull.

Leilua was brought to ground and coughed up the ball, but the referee awarded a penalty and the Cowboys opted for a fresh set of six.

“I think if the hair’s not there he’s gone,” said Storm legend Billy Slater on Nine’s coverage.

“There’s a plus for going bald,” Mat Thompson added, sparking laughter in the commentary box.

In a clash between the Bulldogs and Sea Eagles last season, Joe Stimson was penalized for a hair pull on Marty Taupau, leaving then Canterbury coach Trent Barrett raging.

In the Cowboys’ win over the Dragons on Sunday, crafty fullback Scott Drinkwater and rising second-rower Jeremiah Nanai bagged doubles as North Queensland broke a 19-year drought, winning its first game in Kogarah since 2003.

The Cowboys had lost three games at Kogarah Oval since 2003, but Todd Payten’s men thumped the Dragons to consolidate second on the ladder.

St George Illawarra lost a crucial game in its bid to snare a finals berth, leaving itself sitting precariously in 11th.

The Cowboys will face the Bulldogs, Roosters, Warriors, Rabbitohs and Panthers on the road to the finals, and the Dragons await clashes with the Sharks, Raiders, Titans, Wests Tigers and Broncos.

The Dragons are sitting one win outside the top eight and have a worse for and against than every team above them on the ladder.

Amanda Nunes beats Julianna Pena to regain UFC women’s bantamweight belt

Amanda Nunes won a unanimous five-round decision over Julianna Pena in the main event of UFC 277 on Saturday night to regain the women’s bantamweight championship that she lost last December.

Nunes (22-5), nicknamed “The Lioness,” also holds the featherweight belt. The judges’ scoring was 50-45, 50-44 and 50-43.

“Double champ again, baby!” Nunes yelled at the crowd after the fight. “This is the best day ever.”

Pena beat Nunes last December at Las Vegas to claim the title in one of the biggest upsets in UFC history.

Saturday’s fight was the first title defense for Pena (12-5) in the 135-pound division.

Brandon Moreno won the co-main event with a third-round TKO over Kai Kara-France in a scheduled five-round bout to take possession of the interim men’s flyweight championship belt.

Nunes dropped Grief three times in the second round, twice on right hooks and then with a left to the forehead.

Nunes took down Pena midway through the third round and kept her on the mat, punching to the head to open cuts along Pena’s hairline that left blood splattered on the mat.

Nunes had Pena on her back again for much of the fourth and fifth rounds. Her face was streaked with blood that stained much of the mat.

“I could have finished her, but I wanted to go five rounds with her tonight to prove I was better than her,” said Nunes, her right eye swollen nearly shut, using crutches to reach the interview session. “I could have gone six, seven rounds.”

Nunes came out and added a left-handed stance to her normal right-handed stance. She believes that she confused Pena.

UFC president Dana White said Pena was taken from the arena after the fight to see a plastic surgeon about damage to her forehead.

“Julianna has a big chunk missing from her forehead,” he said.

“She’s going to see a plastic surgeon right now. … She got pretty banged up tonight.

“Julianna’s tough as nails,” he added.

“Her will to win is second to none.”

Nunes owned the bantamweight belt for more than five years before the December defeat, which snapped a 12-match winning streak that included nine consecutive title fights.

Referee Herb Dean stopped the fight between Moreno and Kara-France at 4:34 after Moreno, sporting a deep cut under his right eye with blood streaming down his face and onto his chest, landed a liver kick that dropped Kara-France. Moreno then finished him off.

Moreno (20-6-2), from Tijuana, Mexico, came in as the division’s top-ranked contender and Kara-France (24-10), from New Zealand, was second. Moreno was backed by a crowd that chanted “Mo-re-no!” and “Me-xi-co!” at times during the match.

Deiveson Figueiredo regained the flyweight belt from Moreno last January with a unanimous decision in a trilogy fight in the 125-pound division. But Figueiredo sustained a hand injury several months ago and could not make a title defense, resulting in the UFC creating an interim title fight.

After Saturday’s bout, Figueiredo entered the octagon carrying his championship belt and met with Moreno. Figueiredo said he’d like to host Moreno in his native Brazil for the undisputed title.

“I don’t care (where),” Moreno said. “Let’s go.”

Moreno said he would have told Figueiredo he didn’t appreciate his coming into the cage but didn’t want to set a bad example for his 8-year-old daughter.

Sergei Pavlovich was awarded a TKO in 55 seconds into a scheduled three-round heavyweight bout against Derrick Lewis, the oldest fighter on the card at 37 years old and a fan favorite from Houston.

Pavlovich landed a series of punches to Lewis’ head and upper body. Lewis finally went down but jumped right back up as referee Dan Miragliotta stopped it, as Lewis and the crowd both expressed their displeasure with the ruling.

White said the fight shouldn’t have been stopped.

“Miragliotta made a mistake,” White said. “It happens.”

Pavlovich (16-1) went in ranked 11th while Lewis (26-10) was fifth.

Alexandre Pantoja quickly finished off Alex Perez on a tap out only 1:31 into their scheduled three-round men’s flyweight matchup. Pantoja (25-5), ranked No. 4, got atop Perez (24-7), No. 6, along the fence and locked his arms across Perez’s jaw to force the submission.

Magomed Ankalaev scored a TKO at 3:09 of the second of three rounds over Anthony Smith in a men’s light heavyweight bout. Ankalaev (18-1), ranked No. 4, took down Smith (36-17), No. 5, in the first round and then pummeled him along the base of the fence early in the second round when referee Jacob Montalvo stopped the fight. Smith injured his left leg and was helped from the cage, but White said there was no fracture.

A day of suffering at Tour de France Femmes – 13 riders leave on stage 7

Stage 7 of the Tour de France Femmes was never going to be an easy day for the non-climbers with the mountains arriving in full force, but with so many carrying crash wounds and then a brutal long-range attack from Annemiek van Vleuten (Movistar ) to split the field early, the penultimate stage became a race ending day of suffering for many.

There were 13 riders who stepped out of the Tour de France Femmes on the day of the 127.1km stage to Le Markstein Fellering, which included three category one climbs. Even before the stage started the crashes of previous days had taken a toll, with stage 4 winner Marlen Reusser (SD Work) suffering from a concussion and therefore registering a DNS, as did sprinter Rachele Barbieri (Liv Racing Xstra).

Supercars 2022 | Thomas Randle Andre Heimgartner walk away from massive start line crash

By Damien McCarthy and Simon Chapman

Supercars drivers Thomas Randle and Andre Heimgartner have walked away from a big start line crash.

Starting from the front row, Randle stalled his Ford Mustang and was collected by a clearly unsighted Heimgartner, who then hit an innocent Nick Percat.

Both drivers were able to climb from their cars, although both are out for the rest of the weekend.

The race was immediately red-flagged.

Heimgartner’s car owner Brad Jones said he thought the Commodore would be a write-off.

“I don’t think that thing is going to be running again any time soon… he was certainly going pretty quickly when he hit him,” he said on Fox Sports’ coverage.

“Andre’s okay, which is the important thing, and then we’ll work out where we go from here.

“I’d be very surprised, as clever as my guys are, if we can get the thing going again. It just looks really badly damaged. Lucky no one was hurt.”

Tim Edwards, team boss at Tickford Racing said he was thankful both drivers were able to walk away from the crash.

“Thankfully both of them got out. Both of them look a bit sore, but anyway,” he said.

“The main focus is that he’s physically alright. We’ll talk about the mental side after today. It’s just one of those things – drivers stall. In those situations, you just hope everybody avoids them. It’s always a fine line.”

Off the race restart, pole-sitter Cameron Waters spun the rear tires on the oil-soak resin on the track surface at the crash site and was swamped into turn one.

Van Gisbergen then looked after his tires and took the lead via an undercut during the pit stop cycle. He won the race by 2.5secs.

Carlton Blues Adam Saad addresses alleged racial slur by Adelaide Crows supporter AFL joins investigation

Adam Saad has spoken out as the AFL joined the Adelaide Football Club in investigating reports of an alleged racial slur made towards him during Carlton’s loss at Adelaide Oval on Saturday night.

In a Tweet circulated on social media, the Carlton cheer squad claimed a female Crows supporter called the Blues defender “a terrorist.” Saad is a first-generation Lebanese Muslim – the only practicing Muslim player in the competition.

The post also labeled the subsequent action taken by Adelaide Oval ground staff as “absolutely disgraceful”, after the accused woman was spoken to but allowed to remain in her seat for the remainder of the match.

According to Adelaide Oval’s code of conduct, any person who engages in racial abuse “may be removed” from the venue.

“Depending on the severity of the behaviour, anyone evicted may incur a ban, suspension of membership and/or police charges,” the code says.

Addressing the media on Sunday, Saad said he wanted to use the incident to educate people on the peacefulness of his religion.

“[I’m] always grateful to be in this position, can’t complain,” he told reporters.

“Those things shouldn’t be said but hopefully the AFL and the clubs will deal with it.

“It’s disappointing, I guess we’ve just got to educate around making comments like that.

“At the end of the day I know who I am as a person and us as a Muslim community.

“As long as we can educate the person and move things forward.”

The Blues said in a statement they were comforting impacted members of their community.

“The Carlton Football Club is working with AFL Integrity and all relevant parties regarding an allegation of racial vilification in the crowd during Saturday night’s game at the Adelaide Oval,” it read.

“The club is fully aware of the seriousness of the alleged comments, and has been providing the appropriate level of support to its people as the matter is investigated.

“The club makes clear that vilification of any kind is disgraceful, unacceptable and has no place in society, let alone our game.”

In a separate statement, the Crows said they would not stand for any type of anti-social behaviour.

“We do not tolerate and strongly condemn any form of discriminatory behavior and it has no place in football or society. Adelaide Oval should be an inclusive and family friendly environment,” it read.

This latest occurrence of racism at the footy comes just months former Adelaide captain Taylor Walker completed a six-match ban for making a racist slur towards North Adelaide’s Robbie Young in a SANFL game last August.

In response to the incident, AFL House said the league would continue to advocate for diversity and inclusion.

“Football is a place of inclusion and belonging and there is no place for racist behavior in our game,” a statement read.

“Nobody in our game or in the community deserves to be discriminated against and vilified against due to their faith or race and there is simply no excuse for it.”

South Australia Police have confirmed officers and Adelaide Oval security took down the details of people allegedly involved in the incident.

2022 Hungarian F2 Sprint Race report and highlights: Jack Doohan wins Budapest Sprint Race in style

Virtuosi Racing’s Jack Doohan emerged to his second victory of the 2022 Formula 2 season, dominating the Sprint Race around the Hungaroring.

At the start, the Australian lost his advantage from pole to Enzo Fittipaldi, who had lined up alongside him on the front row. Into the second corner though, Doohan capitalized on a lock-up by Fittipaldi to retake a lead he wouldn’t forfeit again.

Juri Vips was able to capitalize on the Brazilian’s Turn 2 moment to secure a second in the race but had a much tougher time fending off the Charouz Racing System driver. The Estonian managed to keep Fittipaldi at arm’s length despite his rival having DRS for the majority of the 24 laps.

Felipe Drugovich survived contact with Logan Sargeant at the first corner to end up in fourth place by the checkered flag. Dennis Hauger was also involved as the trio went three-wide at the first corner, but the PREMA Racing driver and Carlin came off worse. The Norwegian was tipped into a spin and was out on the spot, while Sargeant recovered to the pits but forced to retire at the end of Lap 1.

Frederik Vesti rounded out the top five for ART Grand Prix, but could have been fighting for a P2 finish. Following Fittipaldi’s lock-up, the Dane attempted a move into Turn 4, but was forced to the run-off by the Charouz racer, dropping him behind Drugovich in the process.

Liam Lawson, Marcus Armstrong and Ayumu Iwasa completed the top eight and points-paying positions in sixth, seventh and eighth respectively.

The result hands Drugovich a growing advantage in the Drivers’ Championship, now up to 44 points over next-best, Theo Pourchaire, who finished outside of the top 10. Sargeant remains third ahead of Daruvala, but Doohan’s victory lifts him into the top five on 88 points.

ART Grand Prix continue to head up the Teams’ Standings on 213 points, ahead of MP Motorsport on 204 and Carlin on 200.
