Nick Kyrgios Serves Past Mikael Ymer To Reach Washington Final | ATP Tours

Three years after one of the best tournaments of his career, Nick Kyrgios is back in the Citi Open final.

The 2019 Washington champion battled past Mikael Ymer 7-6(4), 6-3 on Saturday to reach the championship match of the ATP 500 for the second time. He will play top seed Andrey Rublev or Japanese lefty Yoshihito Nishioka for the title.

“Honestly I didn’t play anywhere near my best tennis today and I don’t know. The role was reversed, the past couple matches I’ve been on paper, rankings-wise the underdog in my past couple matches, but today I definitely felt like the favourite,” Kyrgios said in his on-court interview. “I served pretty solid. Obviously my winning percentage behind my first serve would have been high, but from the back of the court I didn’t play well at all.”

On Friday, the Australian won two matches and saved five match points in the second of those clashes, in the quarter-finals against Frances Tiafoe. Kyrgios did not have his back up against the wall again, but he did have to work hard to oust Ymer.

The Swede, who used former World No. 1 Andy Murray in the first round, used his speed and defensive skills to great effect throughout the week and did so again on Saturday, finding small openings with sublime backhand passing shots.

But the match was on Kyrgios’ racquet, and the 27-year-old relied on his big serving and baseline power in key moments to triumph after one hour and 35 minutes. He was not at his flying best of him, showing consistent frustration throughout the first set, but his use of him kept him out of danger as he did not face a break point. Kyrgios did not hit 35 aces like he did against Tiafoe, striking 10, but it was good enough for the victory.

“The difference was he stands on the fast and he makes you play that extra ball. He’s an incredible athlete and I really wasn’t expecting him to be that fast,” Kyrgios said. “Maybe next time I might have a couple different tactics when I play him, maybe not to try and out rally him, maybe come forward a little bit more. But it was a tough-fought semi-final and I’m just happy to be in the final once again.”

The first set could have gone either way, with the pair tied at 4/4 in the first-set tie-break. In an uncharacteristic Kyrgios rally, which featured plenty of slices between the two, the Australian prevailed after 24 shots to seize the mini break and eventually, the set.

Kyrgios struggled to break through on Ymer’s serve until 4-3 in the second set, when he finally earned the match’s only break by flicking a forehand half volley from no-man’s land crosscourt and out of the reach of the lunging Swede.

The World No. 63 is up to No. 42 in the Pepperstone ATP Live Rankings. If Kyrgios lifts the trophy on Sunday, he will climb to No. 37.

Did You Know?
Kyrgios has made the final of consecutive tour-level tournaments for the first time in his career. If he claims the Washington crown, it will be his first ATP Tour victory since 2019 at the same event.

Blues manage Pittonet for crunch AFL clash

Sydney veteran Josh Kennedy has again missed out on senior selection, while Carlton have opted to manage ruckman Marc Pittonet just one match after his AFL return.

The Blues made five changes from the team that suffered a shock 29-point loss to Adelaide.

Caleb Marchbank, Jack Newnes Paddy Dow, Jack Martin, and last week’s medical sub Jack Silvagni have all been named in the 22 for Sunday’s crunch clash with Brisbane at the Gabba.

Pittonet, who played his first AFL match since round six last week, has been rested, while Matthew Kennedy (concussion), Nic Newman (knee), Corey Durdin (shoulder), and Lachie Plowman (omitted) go out of the side.

The Lions axed Nakia Cockatoo and Mitch Robinson to make room for the returns of Daniel Rich and Brandon Starcevich.

Kennedy was the unused sub for Sydney in last week’s win over GWS, and he couldn’t squeeze his way into the 22 for Sunday’s encounter with North Melbourne at Marvel Stadium.

The Swans made just one change, recalling Logan McDonald for Joel Amartey.

Kennedy is an emergency and is a chance to be the sub again.

North get back four players who missed last week due to entering the AFL’s health and safety protocols – Aidan Corr, Lachie Young, Paul Curtis and Aaron Hall.

Father-son draftee Jackson Archer has been ruled out with a hip injury, while Aiden Bonar, Kayne Turner and Phoenix Spicer were all axed.

West Coast welcome back forward Josh Kennedy for his 293rd and final AFL match in Sunday’s meeting with Adelaide at Optus Stadium.

Samo Petrevski-Seton and Zac Langdon are also back, but Jai Culley (suspended), Connor West (wrist) and Jack Petruccelle (hamstring) go out.

Adelaide have named an unchanged side following their impressive win over Carlton.

GWS made a late change for Saturday’s match against Adelaide, with Tim Taranto (possible concussion) replaced by Lachie Ash.

The Western Bulldogs lost Norm Smith medalist Jason Johannisen to an ankle injury.

He has been replaced by Laitham Vandermeer for Saturday’s clash with the Dockers.

Ashleigh Buhai closes in on Women’s Open title after taking five-shot lead | Women’s Open

Just when a glimmer of hope had been provided to the field, Ashleigh Buhai slammed the door shut in the style of a champion.

Buhai’s third shot to Muirfield’s par-five 17th had sailed long of the green. She had a dicey chip remaining. Not content to trickle her ball towards the hole and save par, the South African holed out for a birdie four. Her lead from her had been extended to six shots.

Only elements of the past are against Buhai in this Women’s Open. She has just one top 10 in 42 previous major starts, that coming in this very event in 2019. Buhai led by three at the halfway point of that tournament. Yet since this event was elevated to major status, nine players have held a 54-hole lead of three strokes or more. All have prevailed on Sunday. A dropped shot at the last means Buhai’s advantage was cut to five – she sits at 14 under par – but she has one hand and four fingers on the trophy. “You have to pat yourself on the back after that score in those conditions,” she said. “That is one of the best rounds I have ever played.

“You can never be comfortable in a major, whether you are leading or not. They say big leads are often more difficult. I’ve just got to keep doing what I’ve been doing.” Buhai revealed she was sent a message of encouragement by Gary Player, her compatriot who won the 1959 Open at Muirfield.

The sad thing was, precious few people were around to see Buhai and co finish their rounds. Galleries were distressingly sparse as play rumbled towards conclusion; the consequence, perhaps, of tee-off times after three o’clock in the afternoon for the leaders. This represented a bad look for a tournament which has been elevated in status by the R&A.

Buhai’s third round of 64 was without a bogey until she left a short putt on the final green. She reached the turn in just 31, having collected four shots in a row from the 4th. Hinako Shibuno, who shot 66, and Chun In-gee, who made a 70, are joint second. Inbee Park, seeking an eighth major win, is alongside Madelene Sagström at seven under.

Minjee Lee, the US Open champion, lurks at minus five after a 70. “I think with the position I’m in and considering how many shots back I am, I can be aggressive,” Lee said. “I think I can just try and make birdie every single hole. I think that’s pretty much what I can do, if I can go for the pin. I think with Ash, probably she has contended a few times but it’s the British Open and the final group, so I’m sure she’ll have a few nerves.”

In a week of Muirfield firsts, there was another at the start of day three’s play. Lindsey Garden, a female member at a course once infamously an all-male domain, played alongside Lydia Hall because of an odd number of players having made the cut. Garden, who holds a 1.6 handicap and is a former Scotland international, admitted to being “very nervous” on the opening tee.

“It’s fantastic,” she added of her membership at the Honorable Company of Edinburgh Golfers. “I’ve been a member a year. It’s just been a great year because since I’ve been a member, we have known we are hosting the Women’s Open. There have been lots of prep for that. There’s been some really fun stuff around that, media days and some interviews with various media people talking about what it is like to be a woman member at Muirfield, it’s the same as it is for a man. We’re equal.” Changed days indeed.

McLaren F1 slammed over Ricciardo treatment

Formula One is famous for people making ruthless decisions. Hamilton was about to be ditched by Ron Dennis when Brawn and Mercedes came calling in the nick of time. Daniel Ricciardo has now been sacked by Zak Brown mid way through his 2 year contract with the team. Yet the Aussie should not take it personally given the historic tales of how the ‘Piranha Club’ operates.

Damon Hill was given his marching orders by Frank Williams during the season while he was in the process of winning the drivers’ world title for the team in 1996.

Frank who founded the Williams team admitted some years later, “I probably thought at the time, almost certainly did: ‘Great, great. Thank you, Damon – we need to do better.’ And I thought the guy we chose would do better and in fact it was a serious error of judgment. For which I’m responsible.”

Damon Hill remarkably became the fourth Williams driver in 9 years who won the drivers’ title but was subsequently released the following season. Frank was indeed ruthless in pursuit of the next great ‘thing’.

Nelson Piquet, Nigel Mansell and Alain Prost were all similarly sacked by Williams the year they became F1 world champions driving for the Grove based team.

Heinz Harald Frenzen from Sauber replaced world champion Damon Hill at Williams in 1997 but the German provided a huge disappointment despite Hill’s former team mate Jacques Villeuve taking the drivers’ title.

The moral of the story is – this is not the end for Daniel Ricciardo. as they say ‘Form is temporary but class is permanent.’

Mercedes 2023 regulation change demands rejeter by FIA

Daniel joined the big boy Red Bull team replacing Mark Webber in 2014 alongside 4 times world champion Sebastian Vettel. That season the Aussie dominated his 4 time world champion team mate and finished 4th in the drivers’ title. Vettel was 8th and suddenly on his way to Ferrari.

In 2015 Ricciardo was joined by Russian driver Daniel Kyat. The Red Bull car was less competitive that year and Ricciardo scored the only team’s podium in Hungary. Kvyat finished P8 in the drivers championship with Ricciardo in P9 close behind.

The following year Kvyat was dropped after 4 races and the young Max Vertsappen was drafted in from Torro Rosso. Ricciardo finished 3rd in driver’s championship with a win and 3 podiums 2 places ahead of young gun Verstappen.

2017 saw Ricciardo win a race for Red Bull together with 7 podiums but the team performance was poor as they were just third as a constructor. Verstappen again finished a place behind Ricciardo in the drivers’ title in P6.

Now having been Red Bull’s lead driver for 4 seasons Daniel Ricciardo faced his toughest year for the Milton Keynes team. Following a collision with team mate Verstappen in round 4 of the championship which saw both cars eliminated,. Ricciardo went into a spiral.

FIA’s crafty new tire regulations for 2023

It appeared the team blamed him for the contact in Baku with Verstappen and that loss of confidence and support was something Ricciardo never recovered from. The Aussie racer actually landed two wins for Red Bull that season to Verstappen’s 1. However the Dutchman scored 249 points at the seasons end to Ricciardo’s 170. This would not have proven to be fatal for Red Bull’s Australian driver and the team wanted him for the following year.

Yet Ricciardo was fatally wounded mentally over the blame the team laid on him for the Baku double DNF and decided his time was up at Red Bull.

With hindsight it’s easy to see the mistakes F1 drivers make in their careers, but leaving Red Bull for Alpine in 2019 was Ricciardo’s biggest mistake at that point. He had matched and beaten Verstappen and seen of the Red Bull team’s 4 time world champion Sebastian Vettel. Baku his fault from him or not, he should’ve have been handled better by Horner and the team.

After 2 successful ears at Alpine including a P5 in the drivers’ championship in 2020, Ricciardo was lured by McLaren to replace Carlos Sainz who was on his way to Ferrari.

The rest is woeful history for the talented and likeable Australian.

When Sainz left McLaren he remarked, “their car is very difficult to drive”. Riiciardo replied, “thanks for telling me now mate” having signed for the Woking team.

Vettel job with FOM management

After a season and a half of struggling with the badly balanced McLaren F1 car, Riccardo is facing the sack. Zack Brown has decided its time for something new and signed Alpine’s academy driver Oscar Piastri.

The response over the treatment of the likeable Aussie driver half way through his contact has been remarkable.

ESPN’s Nate Saunders reported four teams have sounded Ricciardo out recently to “see where his head is at” and slammed McLaren for its treatment of the Aussie.

“It reflects very poorly on Brown and McLaren how they have treated Ricciardo over the past six months,” writes Saunders.

“Ricciardo, the only McLaren driver to have won an F1 race since 2012, has been the first to admit his performances have not been up to the standards he set at Red Bull and Renault but it feels as though he has been made as a scapegoat to deflect away from deeper problems at the team.”

Saunders isn’t alone in his praise for Ricciardo who is suffering tough times.

“Amid all the rumpus and pressure you have to commend Ricciardo on his grace and professionalism over these last few months,” tweeted Tom Gaymor.

“Says everything about him as a man, he is a class act and I hope he keeps smiling and doing it his way.”

Daniel Ricciardo is a proven Formula One winner and top driver. He finished P5 in the drivers’ championship for Alpine in 2020 before he joined what he thought was a progression to McLaren.

In just 18 months he has not ‘lost it’, Ricciardo just needs a team where he can be the heart and sole of the garage. He also needs a car not so on the very edge where it breaks away from the driver without notice.

Renault’s Alain Prost admitted the team loved having Ricciardo as their driver due to his positivity and professionalism. Further he scored Renault’s best results for almost a decade.

Surely it is a no brainer that Alpine recruits the scorned McLaren driver for next season. Because seriously the other options after they cocked up the Alonso/Piastri situation – are bleak indeed.

Dew admits “big incentive” for Rankine move after mammoth Adelaide offer

Gold Coast Suns coach Stuart Dew has admitted he is unsure where star forward Izak Rankine will be playing his football from 2023.

It was originally reported by Chief Sports Reporter at SEN Sam Edmund that the 22-year-old was comfortable in Queensland and was close to recommitting to the club in the wake of buying a new house on the Gold Coast, however, a $4 million deal over five years from Adelaide has thrown a spanner in the works.

Taken with pick number 3 in the 2018 draft from West Adelaide, the return-home factor was always of concern for Stuart Dew and his men, and after 47 games and 55 goals, it may have eventuated sooner than previously hoped.

Speaking in the post-match press conference after the Suns’ seven-point defeat at the hands of Hawthorn, Dew was pragmatic about the future of Rankine.

“He’s obviously got a decision to make, like a lot of guys out of contract at this time of year. There’s a big incentive for him to stay, there’s also a big incentive for him to leave as well,” he said.

“What we’re confident on is that Gold Coast is a great spot for Izak (Rankine( to play his footy and live his life, we’re really clear on that and he knows that.

“But again he’s 22, he’s going to have a decision to make, not unlike (Luke) Jackson at Melbourne and different players around the league so he’s focused on finishing the year, and that’s what’s most important to all of us.

“Our job and the players’ jobs are to be professional and finish the year off, but we still firmly believe that we are the best place for him to play his footy.”

Rankine received a similar offer from Essendon that was centered around his involvement in Dreamtime at the ‘G and The Long Walk, which he later rejected.

The Suns and Rankine face the red-hot Geelong at Metricon Stadium next round.

Kyle Chalmers lands at Adelaide airport after Commonwealth Games Cody Simpson and Emma McKeon drama

Kyle Chalmers is collected by his mum as he returns to Australia after threatening to quit swimming during the Commonwealth Games over ‘love triangle’ drama with Cody Simpson and Emma McKeon

  • The swimmer won three golds and a silver at the Commonwealth Games
  • Chalmers was greeted by his mother, sharing a laugh as they walked
  • Chalmers considered leaving the sport over ‘love triangle’ claims at Games

Champion swimmer Kyle Chalmers was all smiles arriving home from a successful Commonwealth Games, looking to put the ‘love triangle’ drama that almost derailed his campaign in the rear-vision mirror.

Chalmers was met by his mother at Adelaide airport and appeared in good spirits.

He donned a black hoodie with a pair of Australian swim team tracksuit pants.

The Commonwealth Games gold medalist beamed at waiting media as he wheeled his luggage through the airport alongside his mother.

Chalmers left Birmingham with three gold medals and one silver.

During the game he said he was considering quitting the sport after the drama surrounding the reported swimming ‘love triangle’ between himself, former girlfriend Emma McKeon and her new beau Cody Simpson.

The drama made headlines when the 4×100 mixed relay team won gold on the opening night but the celebrations appeared tinged by awkwardness as McKeon and Chalmers did not shake hands after securing victory.

Speaking at a press conference in Birmingham, Chalmers threatened to quit swimming altogether if ‘false news’ continued to circulate that he was in a feud with McKeon and Simpson.

After taking gold in the 100m freestyle on Tuesday, Chalmers put his fingers to his lips in a gesture that suggested he was silencing his critics after taking gold.

He had also said there were moments he had felt like he ‘could not continue on’ and said he hoped his latest win was ‘a learning point for everybody’ – including the media.

Chalmers also rubbished reports of a rift in the team, saying after his last race at the Games he was ‘relieved’ it was now over.

‘There’s so many things to be grateful for: being part of the team, it’s special,’ he told Channel 7 after swimming the anchor leg for Australia in their 4x100m mixed medley.

‘And we are all so close and it’s been a very, very successful week in the pool for us and, hopefully, we’re able to celebrate a little bit tonight as a team and, obviously, we all depart tomorrow.’

Tariq Sims tackle, Dragons, Connor Tracey, Sharks, Ashley Klein, no bin, charge sheet, James Fisher-Harris

Tariq Sims’ time at the Dragons appears to be over with the second rower looking at a minimum of four weeks on the sidelines for a high shot on Connor Tracey.

NRL referee Ashley Klein has been blasted as “gutless” for failing to send off Sims after the Dragons enforcer knocked out the Sharks winger in their 24-18 loss on Saturday.

Tracey’s game ended after just 12 minutes after running the ball out of his own half when Andrew McCullough took his legs and Sims came over the top.

Sims’ shoulder caught Tracey flush on the jaw the Sharks winger appeared to be unconscious before he hit the ground.

Sims immediately called for Tracey to be helped by trainers and he looked visibly uncomfortable as the Cronulla star was being treated by medical staff.

The game was held up for more than five minutes as Tracey was placed onto a stretcher and driven off the field.

Sims has been charged with a grade three careless high tackle and given it is his third and subsequent offence, he is looking at four games on the sideline even with an early plea.

Should he fight the charge unsuccessfully, Sims will be banned for five matches.

Either way, it looks like Sims’ career at the Dragons is over, with the 32-year-old set to join the Melbourne Storm next season.

speaking on Fox League During commentary of Saturday’s game, experts questioned whether Sims should have even been allowed back on the field.

“Oh, there’s a hit here that is going to get the attention of the bunker and it’s Connor Tracey. That had the concern of the Dragons players as well,” Dan Ginnane said on Fox League.

“I think he knows he’s about to be punished but also some concern for the player he struck. We’re not seeing Connor Tracey again tonight.”

Sims was binned which several commentators deemed fortunate for the 32-year-old leaving the club at the end of the season.

“That was the best case scenario for the Dragons,” Ginnane said.

ABC Grandstand commentator Andrew Moore exploded at Klein while Sims was in the bin.

“That is a gutless decision, and is not in the best interest of the game. I find that absolutely disgusting,” Moore said.

Sims showed plenty of remorse and Tracey was soon back up and walking in the sheds.

“Some good news on Connor Tracey’s welfare, he’s up and about in the sheds… but obviously will not be back tonight,” Fox League sideline reporter Lara Pitt said in the 22nd minute.

In other match review committee news, Panthers front rower James Fisher-Harris is looking at a minimum of two weeks on the sideline for a high shot on Joseph Tapine.

Fisher-Harris was charged with a grade three careless high tackle and faces three weeks out should he fight the ruling and be found guilty at the panel.

The Panthers are set to play the Storm and Rabbitohs in the next fortnight and are already without halves Nathan Cleary and Jarome Luai.

Raiders winger Nick Cotric is also set for a stint on the sideline for his careless high tackle on Dylan Edwards, facing one game out if he takes the early plea.

Like Fisher-Harris, Cotric was sent to the sin bin for his high shot and is looking at two weeks should he fight the charge and be found guilty at the panel.

Raiders team mate tapine was also charged for a grade one crusher tackle but will escape with a fine if he takes the early plea.

NRL 2022, Cronulla Sharks v St George Illawarra Dragons match report round 21, match highlights, injuries, media conferences

The Sharks climbed to third spot on the ladder with a 24-18 win in the local derby against the Dragons at PointsBet Stadium on Saturday night.

With four games to play the Sharks are in the box seat to snare a crucial top-four position while the season appears to be over for the Dragons.

The Sharks needed only three minutes to open the scoring when Nicho Hynes strolled over from close range before the Dragons hit back in the ninth minute when a Ben Hunt bomb was spilled by Ronaldo Mulitalo and Jack de Belin picked up the scraps to score.

The Dragons went down a man in the 12th minute when Tariq Sims was sent to the bin for high contact on Sharks winger Connor Tracey.

The Sharks looked to have crossed again in the 21st minute through Mulitalo but the final pass from Wade Graham was ruled forward.

Sims sent to the bin

It took the home side just four minutes to make amends when stand-in five-eighth Braydon Trindall bamboozled De Belin and Talatau Amone with a show-and-go and crossed to make it 12-6.

Coming into the starting side when Matt Moylan withdrew with a quad strain, Trindall looked right at home, laying on a try Teig Wilton with a sweet pass close to the line.

The Sharks went down to 12 men when Blayke Brailey was sin binned on the stroke of half-time for laying in the ruck too long and the Red V capitalized in the 44th minute when Amone put Tautau Moga over with a long cut-out pass. Zac Lomax’s sideline conversion made it 18-12.

Trindall’s tricky treat

When Mat Feagai finished off crisp lead-up work by Ben Hunt and Jack Bird in the 55th minute the Dragons were back within two points.

With the game in the balance it was a spilled bomb by Tyrell Sloan opening the door for the Sharks, with Briton Nikora picking up the scraps and linking with Brailey who found Graham for the try. Hynes converted for 24-16.

An offside penalty against the Sharks with two minutes to play handed Lomax the chance to get the Dragons within six points but that was as close as the Red V would get, Moses Mbye dropping the ball at dummy half to put paid to their last shot at points.

The Dragons now find themselves four points outside the eight with a points differential of -130, the worst of any of the sides scrambling for eighth spot.

Match Snapshot

  • Dragons forward Tariq Sims was put on report and sin binned in the 12th minute for high contact on Sharks winger Connor Tracey, who left the field on a stretcher.
  • Cronulla hooker Blayke Brailey was sin binned in the 39th minute for a professional foul.
  • PointsBet Stadium was a sell-out for the local derby, following on from Friday night’s sell-out at 4 Pines Park for Manly and Parramatta. The ‘house full’ sign will also go up at Bundaberg’s Salter Oval on Sunday for the Bulldogs and Cowboys.
  • Sharks debutant Kade Dykes had 13 runs for 96 meters from fullback.
  • Dragons hooker Andrew McCullough came into the game averaging 35 tackles per game and came up with 32 tonight.

Wilton scores with his first touch

  • Mat Feagai is now the Dragons’ leading tryscorer for the season with seven.
  • The Dragons have won only two from 12 against top-eight opposition in 2022.
  • Nicho Hynes was outstanding for the Sharks with a try, four goals, 145 running meters and five tackle breaks.
  • The Sharks made 17 errors to the Dragons’ nine and completed at just 68 per cent (34 of 50).
  • The Sharks have won eight from nine at PointsBet Stadium this season.
  • The Sharks have won their past five games against the Dragons.

Play of the Game

With the Dragons nipping at their heels with 15 minutes to play the Sharks capitalized on a Tyrell Sloan error to get some breathing space at 24-16. Briton Nikora put pressure on Sloan and then put the loose ball on his boot and did well to scoop it up before finding Blayke Brailey in support, the hooker delivering the final pass to Wade Graham for the try. The four-pointer was Graham’s first from him since round 20 of the 2020 season against Canberra and was just reward for his tireless support play.

What They Said

“We had a lot to overcome during the week, a lot of hurdles to jump there but we still found a way and whoever came in did their job, so I’m happy about that. More changes throughout the game as well so there’s a lot of positive stuff with character and toughness but we need to play better than that. Lucky for us we had Lachie Miller there today who was a pretty handy replacement for us [when Connor Tracey] went off. You don’t want to see that happen to anyone but Lachie got the job done again for us.” – Sharks coach Craig Fitzgibbon

Sharks: Round 21

“We gave everything but at times we just didn’t execute, catching kicks and then we had our chances in good ball we were just a little clunky at times. Over the past three weeks we have played some really good football apart from probably 15 minutes against the Cowboys at the back end of last week. That’s why it’s frustrating because we’ve played three really good sides and put ourselves in a position to win every game. We did a lot of things right to try and win that game today so we have to dust ourselves off and keep coming at it next Sunday [against the Raiders].” – Dragons coach Anthony Griffin

Dragons:Round 21

South Sydney Rabbitohs put Latrell Mitchell in cotton wool in big win over NZ Warriors

After last weekend’s chaotic golden point loss, South Sydney sorely needed a comfortable win – and got exactly what it was looking for.

Such was its dominance against a disinterested Warriors team, superstar Latrell Mitchell was taken off at the hour mark with the Bunnies 38 points in front.

“It’s a big step in the right direction,” Mitchell told Fox League after the 48-10 win.

“Last week didn’t work out how we wanted, but we played the way we wanted… all the boys kicked another gear, which we wanted.”

While speaking, he put an arm around halfback Lachlan Ilias and praised him for his performance – another, like Mitchell, who needed a bounce-back game after last week.

Ilias got the opening try of the day while Mitchell collected two of his own, the first particularly impressive as he skittled several Warriors players on his way to the line.

Then there was the basketball pass to Alex Johnston, and the no-look cut-out ball to debutant Izaac Thompson, who crossed for a four-pointer in his first NRL game.

But it’s telling how much they rely on their fullback, the Rabbitohs not scoring a point in the final 20 minutes of the game after he was subbed off.

The only real point of interest in the dying stages came as a pitch invader delayed the final siren, as an excited Souths bench cheered him on, led by Mitchell.

Origin stars combine for incredible try

The decision to move games away from home can always end poorly – but not so here for Souths, who moved operations up to the Sunshine Coast five days in advance to prepare for this game.

“I’m really enjoying the training and the boys’ time,” Mitchell said.

“We came up here on Tuesday to connect a bit more and I think it showed tonight.”

But with the Warriors in the rear-view mirror now, they’ll stay in Sydney for the final four matches of the season – a murderer’s row of Parramatta, Penrith, North Queensland and arch-rivals Sydney awaiting them.

But if Mitchell can play like this – as he did in previous wins over the likes of the Eels, Storm and Bulldogs – it’s hard for other teams to match Souths’ attacking output, and hard to see many teams stopping the Rabbitohs on the charge in Sept.
