Archibald prize 2022: Jeremy Eden’s portrait of actor Samuel Johnson wins people’s choice award | Archibald prize 2022

A portrait of Australian actor and cancer charity campaigner Samuel Johnson by Jeremy Eden has won the 2022 Archibald prize people’s choice award.

Eden, a Sydney-based artist, first met Johnson over video in 2021 while the actor was recovering from a near-fatal car accident. Eden then flew to Melbourne for a live sitting with Johnson, before returning to Sydney where he painted for up to six hours a day for 10 weeks to complete the portrait.

The men bonded over their shared experience of losing close family members to cancer. Johnson, who founded the cancer research charity Love Your Sister with his late sister Connie before she passed away in 2017, encouraged Eden to include his own story of him in the painting; the portrait shows Johnson holding a photograph of Eden’s mother Annette, who passed away from cancer in 2008.

Eden, who wins a $5,000 prize, said it was “an honour”.

“This painting has been one I have been thinking about and wanting to make for 10 years,” he said. “Sam is a storyteller at heart, and it was really important to find a way to share my own narrative while still capturing Sam’s character and emotion from him in the portrait.

“It is inspiring to see what Sam and the team at Love Your Sister have accomplished, having raised so much money for cancer research. I’ve followed Sam’s journey from him with the charity for many years and it’s a privilege to be able to contribute in my own way. It is amazing to be a finalist in the Archibald prize but knowing the painting has resonated with so many people makes the experience even more meaningful.”

Love Your Sister has raised more than $15m in support of cancer research. In 2016, Johnson was awarded the Order of Australia Medal, for his service to cancer research and performing arts.

Johnson called Eden “exceptionally talented.”

“He is an extraordinary storyteller, he has a huge heart and deserves this acknowledgment so fully. To win the Archibald prize you have to satisfy a select group of people who really know their stuff. To win the people’s choice takes in the votes of everyone who sees the exhibition. The people have spoken and they loved Jeremy the most,” he said.

“Wow and phwoar. I’m stupidly happy for Jeremy. Such a well-deserved triumph.”

Maud Page, the Art Gallery of New South Wales’s deputy director and director of collections, said the portrait was a clear crowd favorite among visitors to the annual Archibald exhibition.

“We congratulate Jeremy Eden on capturing the hearts of our visitors with his powerful portrait of Samuel Johnson,” Page said.

Born in Sydney in 1988, Eden completed a bachelor of fine art at Queensland College of Art in 2015. He was also nominated for the Archibald prize in 2021, for his portrait of another actor, Firass Dirani.

First awarded in 1988, the people’s choice category this year was voted on by more than 35,000 people, the highest ever number of votes cast in the history of the category.

In May, the acclaimed Dhungatti artist Blak Douglas won the $100,000 Archibald prize for his portrait of Wiradjuri artist Karla Dickens, titled Moby Dickens, making him the second Indigenous Australian winner in 101 years, after Vincent Namatjira in 2020.

And Claus Stangl’s portrait of film-maker Taika Waititi won the packing room prize, which is judged by gallery staff who hang the entries each year.

Why Kylie Minogue only spoke five words in Neighbours’ finale

After 37 years on air, Aussie soap Neighbors ended last week – and many tuned in to see some of the early stars of the show make their reappearance.

Fans especially couldn’t wait to see Scott and Charlene – aka Jason Donovan and Kylie Minogue – return to Ramsay Street.

WATCH THE VIDEO ABOVE: Neighbors star explains his changed appearance

For more TV related news and videos check out TV >>

But they appeared only briefly, parking their red Mini on Ramsay Street before getting out and admiring their old home, then appearing later at Toadie’s wedding.

The pair was given next to no dialogue – in fact, Minogue spoke only five words all episode, three of which were “home sweet home.”

The other two? “Jane” and “Harold”.

Memes and jokes began flying: was Minogue being paid by the word and charging an exorbitant rate for each?

Having lived in the UK for so long, was her accent now too posh for mechanic Charlene?

Was she actually a DeepFake?

Were she and Donovan having trouble remembering their lines?

Now and then: Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan in Neighbors. Credit: AAP/Twitter

The answer to all these questions is no, according to the show’s executive producer, Jason Herbison.

Herbison told TV Tonight that Minogue and Donovan didn’t want to overshadow some of the more recent cast members in the finale.

And the timing of their “secret shoot” meant it had to stand apart from any of the finale’s various story threads.

“Our discussions with Jason (Donovan) and Kylie were always about making a small appearance,” he said.

“They didn’t want to overshadow the current cast or make the finale about them.

“We also filmed their scenes before I’d written the episode, so whatever we filmed had to fit in with that.”

That meant they couldn’t be part of any bigger plot line in the finale.

“I hate to see Kylie coping with any criticism – she was nothing short of amazing on the day,” Herbison said.

The producer also quashed rumors that sets at the Nunawading film site in Melbourne were being demolished.

“We haven’t made any decisions about the sets and nothing has been demolished,” Herbison said.

“We are in the fortunate position of having the Nunawading studios for several more months and we will be using the site for other productions.

“This gives us plenty of time to make provisions.”

It begs the question: Could a Neighbors museum be in the works?

Borgen gets more than politics right

Acclaimed TV series Borgen, about a fictional first female prime minister of Denmark, has just “dropped” its fourth season, arguably the best yet. I devoured the box-set of seasons one to three a decade ago. Never had I imagined becoming so utterly caught up in a show about politics, set in a country about which I knew precious little.

Half the appeal lies in the performance of Sidse Babett Knudsen, who plays the titular role of Danish prime minister Birgitte Nyborg. I could watch the captivating Knudsen reading a phone book of bewildering (to this ignorant Anglo) Danish names.

Half the appeal of Borgen lies in the performance of Sidse Babett Knudsen who plays the Danish prime minister.

Half the appeal of Borgen lies in the performance of Sidse Babett Knudsen who plays the Danish prime minister.

The thing that sold me utterly on season four, however, was its startlingly realistic portrayal of a menopausal woman, without pandering to stereotypes. Sure, the ever-ambitious Nyborg is crankier than she used to be, but this is revealed to be less due to her hormones than her essential loneliness.

In one profoundly moving scene, where her adult son challenges her as to why power has recently become the most important thing in her life, she says, simply: “But back then, I had you guys.”

Hot flushes might be a cliche but there’s a reason for that. Nyborg has to leave a meeting and cool herself down in the bathroom, running her face and wrists under cold water, untucking and flapping her blouse. Most women who have endured menopause know only too well that desperate feeling akin to instantaneously spiking a temperature high enough to land you in hospital.

And who among people who menstruate have never messaged a friend or colleague, “tampon, urgent!” as Nyborg does at the start of a vital meeting with the Chinese ambassador, before racing to the bathroom and craning her neck to see if she has a blood stain on her skirt.

loading

She peers into the mirror to pull out stray facial whiskers. She even has a ball under her desk on which to rub the underside of her foot de ella, something I spent hours doing as a victim of plantar fasciitis, that painful condition which often affects women of a certain age.

I hope women everywhere are cheering as Nyborg so convincingly portrays a remarkable human being who happens to be enduring menopause. Welcome to our world fellas.

May there be many more realistic portrayals of how women live. Not many of us are in parliament, but menopause, menstruation, period pain, childbirth, breastfeeding, struggling to be able to afford pads – are the ordinary things my half of the population live with and, despite this, still manage to do all we do.

113 Eatery’s Owner To Close His Northcote Restaurant After a Scooter Stunt Goes Horribly Wrong

When Lorenzo Tron, owner of all-day diner 113 Eatery in Northcote, woke up this morning he received a message from his neighbor to let him know his shop window had been shattered. The police had already been called and Tron was advised that it’d cost $4000 to have the front window repaired in order to keep his Italian eatery operating.

Then, hours later, a video was posted on Brown Cardigan showing a person falling into the window after attempting a scooter stunt.

“The video started going viral and everyone started talking about it,” Tron tells Broadsheet. “It’s already very hard [to run a restaurant] after Covid and we’ve had staff shortages, so we’ve decided to close the shop as I can’t keep going. It’s not worth it.”

Become an Access member and receive free coffee each month and money off cinema tickets, wine boxes and Provider. From $6.50 per month.

113 Eatery, which serves classic Italian fare such as pizza, eggplant parmigiana and house-made gnocchi, will continue to operate for guests who’ve already booked into the restaurant for tonight’s service – however, Tron confirms it’s last service will be on August 14 .

“After the two years we’ve had and now this. We will shut for good. It’s challenging, demanding, frustrating, and while this video possibly gives this person more followers (he already has over one million followers), it will cost us our beloved restaurant,” he says.

Tron, who also owns Shop225 Pizzeria and Il Caminetto, says he is very pleased no one got hurt during the incident.

The person responsible has offered to pay the damages, says Tron.

“We’re going to try to operate until August 14 with the window blocked like that as there’s no other way,” says Tron. “I’m feeling defeated to be honest. Every time we get our head above the water something pushes us down again.”

113 Eatery will close on August 14.

First Nations designers and artists from across the country have come together in Darwin to showcase some of the nation’s leading Indigenous fashion.

The Country to Couture fashion show has been held on Larrakia Country, in Darwin, as part of the Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair.

Artistic director, Shilo McNamee, said 18 designers and artists took part in two sold-out shows.

“We’ve had so much interest from all these amazing designers, artists and creatives, so we’ve got two really big shows,” she said.

She said it was a pleasing experience to showcase Indigenous culture.

“Culture is a very important thing that we share with others … And you have to feel good to share your culture,” Ms Hubert said.

“To share and acknowledge ourselves, to be proud of ourselves, to have pride in yourself and be accountable.”

Wendy’s grandson Wimiya Woodley also took part in the show, and was his first time taking to the runway as a model.

“I’m feeling pumped to show my family’s culture, being around all these other First Nations people, it’s very empowering he said.

“We’ve come a long way as blackfellas… and to be in this venue in the capital of the NT… it’s very magical.”

‘Carrying our stories’

Creative Director Shilo McNamee said she had been blown away by the response to this year’s Country to Couture events.

“Audiences are really excited to come and support the show, support designers and artists,” she said.

“There are quite a few local people involved in the show, we’ve got local talent on stage as our closing performances… so it’s great that Darwin people could come get behind it.”

Bobbi Lockyer, a designer who also took part in the show, said she was encouraged by the response to the event.

“It’s so important because it’s a way of carrying our stories through and showcasing our incredible resilience and talent,” she said.

“It’s really incredible to be able to include my culture and include my art, and the storytelling through the pieces in my designs.”

The Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair continues with the National Indigenous Fashion Awards and a public program of events beginning on Friday.

Karly and Aaron are crowned winners following an emotional challenge

After weeks of epic challenges and heartwarming moments there are only three teams left in the Beauty and the Geek competition.

Anthony and Tegan, Karly and Aaron, and Christopher and Bri are set to take part in one final challenge called Leap of Faith, before they make a heartfelt pitch about their growth on the show.

And then what we’ve all been waiting for, Sophie Monk crowns the winner in one of the most emotional moments this season.

Catch up on the latest episodes of Beauty and the Geek on 9Now.

But before we get to the juicy details, our three finalists are faced with the most dramatic challenge which sees them put their past behind them and literally jump towards a new future.

“You’ll be jumping off the 18th floor of the Skye Suites building and descend side-by-side with your partner straight into the pool,” Sophie tells the contestants.

Sophie also brings back the eliminated pairs to observe the challenge before they pick a winner later. And many of the Geeks look unrecognizable with fresh makeovers.

It’s a daunting task ahead and both our Beauties and Geeks are feeling a mixture of emotions.

It was a reality check for usually confident Karly, who is riddled with nerves after stepping foot on the ledge.

“I’m so used to being the strong, confident one… but look at me now, I don’t know how I’m gonna get through this,” she says.

With her legs dangling off the 18th floor, Aaron notices the fear on the Beauty’s face and steps in to comfort her with a pep talk about how far they’ve come in the experience.

“Even though I’m absolutely terrified, I’m trying to hide it because I needed to highlight to Karly that it’s gonna be OK,” Aaron admits.

And his words resonate with the Beauty as she builds up the courage to jump off the ledge and the pair make their way down the building together.

RECAP: Top three pairs decided as Beauties and Geeks are put to the test

Chris and Bri are up next and the jump ahead holds symbolic meaning for the Beauty, who has been battling a difficult past throughout the experiment.

“This challenge is about leaving all the negative energy behind me, it’s about letting go of what has happened in my past,” she reveals.

Bri starts to tear up when she’s about to jump off the ledge, but she remembers that it’s time to move past her fears and use what Chris has taught her in the past three weeks.

And just like that, they take the leap of faith and end up in the pool, cheering each other on the whole way down.

For Anthony and Tegan, it’s a tough challenge ahead as the Geek admits he’s terrified of heights. Worried about the worst that could happen, Tegan eases the Geek’s nerves and tells him it’s his final battle that they will overcome together.

After a failed first attempt, Anthony is about to face his biggest fear, and while he’s still terrified, he finally overcomes his toughest obstacle yet and makes that huge leap of faith.

With the challenge a success, the last hurdle for the final three pairs is to head back to Beauty and the Geek headquarters to make their final pitch about why they should win.

Chris and Bri are first to have their say about why they should win and there isn’t a dry eye in the room, including Sophie Monk.

They are raw with their emotions as they talk about their personal growth and overcoming hurdles together. Both also express how the other has taught them they are good enough and have self-worth.

Anthony and Tegan are the second pair to make their pitch.

Tegan talks about their unlikely friendship and how much Anthony has taught her to believe in herself. Her biggest take away from the experience is to never give up.

Anthony expresses how Tegan helped him break down his walls and to embrace who he is.

Finally Aaron and Karly have their say, which results in tears for almost everyone in the room.

Aaron reflects on his experience and how Karly has helped him realize he is worthy of being loved, and that he has plenty to offer. He reflects on his personal growth of him from being shy and awkward, to a more confident version of himself.

“I wouldn’t be where I am today without you, you’ve come into my life and impacted it in the most positive way possible,” he tells Karly.

“I now know what it feels like to be loved and have people genuinely care about you. Now when I’m looking into that mirror, I no longer see average, I see awesomely amazing… with a touch of hotness and sexiness.”

Karly then speaks of how Aaron has helped her see her true value after admitting she has never felt good enough.

“You have accepted me for exactly who I am. You’ve taught me it’s OK to be strong and soft at the same time. I’m so grateful for you,” she tells him.

The winner of Beauty and the Geek 2022 is announced.
The three couples wait anxiously for Sophie to announce the winner. (Nine)

It’s now time for the eliminated pairs to cast their votes to crown the winner of Beauty and the Geek. Sophie gathers everyone together in the room for the announcement.

“The winners of Beauty and the Geek Australia 2022 are… Aaron and Karly,” Sophie announces.

The room roars with cheers and applause as tears flow down both Aaron and Karly’s faces.

The pair are speechless before finding the words to thank the contestants for seeing how much growth they’ve shared together. Aaron then steps out of his comfort zone and shows the whole group his biggest insecurity about him. He pops out his false teeth, which he lost during a sporting accident, and turns around with a big grin on his face.

“Originally I was afraid to show it but this experience has given me so much more confidence, and what I’m planning to do is use that money towards fixing everything and making myself feel better,” he tells the group.

Find out exactly how the pair felt when they were crowned the winners of the show by reading their exclusive exit interview.

Grant Denyer’s wife reacts as star stuns with revelation: ‘I never knew’

Grant Denyer has shown off an unexpected Kermit the Frog impersonation, stunning his wife Chezzi.

Despite being married for 12 years, Denyer, 44, had never before shared his “exceptional” vocal talent with his partner.

While recording their podcast It’s All True, Chezzi asked her husband if he had a favorite Disney character.

“Maybe not a Disney character,” Denyer began, “but if I was a Muppet I’d be Kermit, you know, nice, friendly, likes to sit on a log.”

He then broke into an unexpectedly accurate impression of the muppet’s character.

“Oh my god,” Chezzi said.

“That’s exceptional. Sign him up,” the podcast’s producer George Sargent said.

Chezzi told her husband, “That’s your next job. I never knew that you could do that.”

“What, impersonate Kermit?” Denyer laughed.

“Standing on a street corner just doing that?”

“And then people asking, ‘Why does Grant Denyer have a weird voice and why does he have a guitar case open collecting coins?’

“We’ll paint you green,” Chezzi joked.

“Oh my god. I never knew you could do that – I loved Kermit.”

“I’ve never done that before,” the former Dancing with the Stars contestant said of his impression.

“We’ll you’re very good,” Chezzi added.

‘Fear of failure’

Last month, Denyer suggested he was “a work in progress”, opening up about his personal struggles in a revealing Instagram post.

“Defs no expert at this but I’m always open to new ideas on how to feel/do better. Or even ancient ones for that matter,” the candid post from July 8 said.

“Meditation isn’t easy for me but it certainly does chill me out more.

“I really suffer from a racing mind that makes a hell of a lot of noise.

“My self-talk can get pretty savage, I beat myself up, worry about the future, hang on to regrets about the past and get bogged down in fear.

“Fear of failure, fear of not being liked, not being good enough.

“Generally a busy mind that makes it hard to be present for those around me.”

He added that his “mental distractions” could make it hard for him to be present and “enjoy the moment.”

“This is not meant to be a preach or a ‘look at how balanced I am’ – it’s an ‘I’m flawed, I have many weaknesses, I struggle’… and I hear you, if you do too,” he said .

The post drew hundreds of likes and comments from fans and followers, including some fellow celebs.

“Absolutely loved this post and you,” Chrissie Swan wrote.

“Love this mate,” comedian Dave Hughes added.

One fan added: “Intuition tells me that you’re witty, caring, resilient, generous and I personally love your posts.”

“Grant, you are always loved and always enough. You are a beautiful human,” another follower added.

Prince Harry reportedly snubbed by Prince Charles over refusing to share details of upcoming memoir

Prince Harry was reportedly ‘snubbed’ by his father Prince Charles after he refused to discuss details of his upcoming memoir.

The memoir ie yet to be released but it is already causing tensions among senior members of the Royal Family.

The icy father-and-son moment occurred after the Duke of Sussex and his wife, Meghan Markle, stopped by to visit Windsor Castle on the way to the Invictus Games in Holland earlier this year.

According to royal expert Neil Sean, a source told him that “Harry refused to talk about what he put down in his book” during their brief meeting.

Stay up to date with the latest news on the British Royals with Flash. 25+ news channels in 1 place. New to Flash? Try 1 month free. Offer ends October 31, 2022 >

It reportedly resulted in Prince Charles brutally “icing” his son and stopping the meeting after just 10 minutes.

“We know Prince Charles spent very little time with his son Prince Harry,” Mr Sean said, according to The Daily Express.

“Charles wanted to have a one-to-one chat, but that ended up being a very brief meeting.

“According to a very good source, allegedly, Prince Harry refused to detail anything about his forthcoming memoir to Prince Charles.”

“The big sticking point this year, being the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and the 75th year of Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, Charles doesn’t want any negativity.

“According to that good source, Harry refused to talk about what he put down in his book and how this will pan out.

“It has been pushed back, and Charles will have to wait and see like the rest of us.”

Last year, Harry announced that he’s writing a tell-all book about his life.

In a statement, the prince said he was excited to share an account of his life that’s “accurate and wholly truthful”.

“I’m writing this not as the Prince I was born but as the man I have become,” he said.

“I’ve worn many hats over the years, both literally and figuratively, and my hope is that in telling my story – the highs and lows, the mistakes, the lessons learned – I can help show that no matter where we come from, we have more in common than we think.

“I’m deeply grateful for the opportunity to share what I’ve learned over the course of my life so far and excited for people to read a firsthand account of my life that’s accurate and wholly truthful.”

The appearance from Princess Charlotte comes after she and her father Prince William made a sweet video for the English women’s soccer team, the Lionesses.

Along with William, Charlotte wished the Lionesses luck for their final game against Germany in the Women’s Euro 2022 competition on Sunday.

“We both want to wish the Lionesses the best of luck tonight, you’ve done amazingly well in the competition and we’re rooting for you all the way!” The Duke of Cambridge, 40, began the message.
