Woodstock 99 Deaths, How Many People Died And Were Injured At The Disaster As Netflix Documentary Is Released

A three-part documentary series on the music event Woodstock 99 has just been made available on Netflix, know about the total deaths at the disaster

As Woodstock 99 fell into chaos and yes, there were deaths in the end.

The Netflix series depicts how the event went awry and how audience members rebelled after feeling treated like “animals” and practically set the stadium on fire. The fact that three people ultimately lost their lives there is not mentioned in the television series.

Woodstock 99 Deaths, How Many People Died And Were Injured At The Disaster After Netflix Documentary Is Released

What Transpired At Woodstock 99 To Cause So Many Deaths There?

The disastrous Woodstock 99 festival will go down in history as one of the worst ever. It was called out due to the bad weather, the security measures, and the crowd’s violent, criminal, and unruly behavior. Three persons are said to have died as a result of Woodstock 99.

What Is The Percentage Of Woodstock 99 Fatalities?

According to Pitchfork, Woodstock 99 resulted in the deaths of three people.

In addition, there were 1,200 medical facility admissions on-site, 44 arrests, and numerous reports of sexual assault. Undoubtedly, many more injured persons did not seek treatment at the on-site medical facilities.

Four women reported rape while at the festival and stated the same. Some even witnessed more sexual assaults. Some took place directly in front of the stage, according to press footage incorporated into the documentary.

Interviewees for Trainwreck claim that although explosive performances by bands like Korn were present, Limp Bizkit’s performance of the song Break Stuff was the turning point. Throughout the weekend, many in the crowd were causing property damage.

Who Shut Down The Woodstock 99?

On Sunday night, Red Hot Chili Peppers played the festival’s final show, and people were given candles to start a candlelight vigil against gun violence. But then there was another fire because of which there was more trouble.

The Chili Peppers were the final act to perform despite rumors of a covered closing act, including Guns n’ Roses and Michael Jackson.

The documentary argues that this dissatisfaction contributed to the Sunday night crowd, which is shown in several images.

Thai cave rescue movie Thirteen Lives avoids cheap Hollywood tricks

You have to hand it to American director Ron Howard for resisting the temptation of “Hollywood-ising” the true story of the Thai Cave Rescue.

But when a tale is as extraordinary and as well-known as the 2018 rescue of 12 children and their football coach from a flooded cave, any cheap movie tricks to over-egg the events would’ve been patently obvious.

Everyone knows at least the broad strokes of those 18 intense days. More importantly, everyone knows the ending, so you can’t inject false suspense, especially when the real ones were already so insane.

As a dramatisation, Thirteen Lives follows an excellent Nat Geo documentary feature, a less successful indie film and precedes a Netflix miniseries. The Thai Cave Rescue is a great story so it’s catnip to storytellers.

Howard’s film is a restrained but still gripping retelling, led by a commitment to realism and a deep respect for all those involved. You can feel that belief in the best of people at the worst possible moment coursing through the veins of the film, and it powers Thirteen Lives‘ hold on the audience.

Starring Viggo Mortensen, Colin Farrell and Joel Edgerton, the narrative is primarily built around the two British cave divers Richard Stanton (Mortensen) and John Volanthen (Farrell) who first located the missing boys more than a week after they were last seen.

And that of Australian diver and anaesthetist Richard Harris (Edgerton) who was recruited into the mission because of his specialist skill.

Thirteen Lives delves into the ethical quandaries and hesitations over the agonizing decision to sedate the boys so they can be retrieved through a treacherous system of tunnels in the five-hour long dive.

While we know it was ultimately a successful mission, the personal cost to those involved have a particular punch in the hands of accomplished actors and Howard’s steady instinct skills and sound as a director.

Those scenes, while quiet and almost ruminative compared to the dive sequences, are what distinguishes Thirteen Lives from the best documentary takes on the events. The Nat Geo doco The Rescue is a riveting work but there is something distinct – not better, just different – about a dramatisation.

Of course, the signature piece of Thirteen Lives is those dive sequences. It’s not going for documentary verisimilitude but there is a realism to the underwater scenes.

Thai cinematographer Sayombhu Mukdeeprom, a frequent collaborator of the esteemed filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul, does a beautiful job in evoking the intensity of those moments.

The water is murky, the currents are forceful and sometimes you can’t see what’s going on, effectively recreating the challenging conditions which all the divers operated under, highlighting how near-impossible their mission was.

Thirteen Lives centers Stanton and Volanthen experiences because it’s their life rights the filmmakers have. But despite that, the film largely avoids any unsavory white savior complex narratives, casting its net wider by giving time to the many, many people involved in the rescue.

That includes the Thai navy Seals, including Saman Kunan (Sukollawat Kanarot), the man who died during the mission, Narongsak Osatanakorn (Sahajack Boonthanakit), the governor co-ordinating the operation and Thanet Natisri (Nophand Boonyai), the water engineer leading a large group of volunteers atop the mountain in trying to stem the water flowing into the caves.

The film captures the scale of the operation and the strength of that co-operation, even if it can’t give enough attention to every experience. There are sections that feel rushed and stories that seem untold, but not even a two-and-a-half-hour movie has the time for everything.

And the boys’ perspective will be the focus of the upcoming miniseries Thai Cave Rescue after the team struck a deal with Netflix for their life rights.

Thirteen Lives is not the complete story but it’s an enthralling piece of a phenomenal moment.

Rating: 3.5/5

Thirteen Lives is streaming now on Amazon Prime Video

Emma Thompson makes glamorous exit from Sydney theater following Q&A for her new film in which she appears nude

Dame Emma Thompson was all smiles and looked ultra-glamourous on Friday as she exited Sydney’s Cremorne Orpheum cinema.

She was in attendance at a Q&A for her new movie, the risqué comedy-drama Good Luck to You, Leo Grande.

The acclaimed actress, 63, goes nude in her role as a 55-year-old woman who forms a relationship with a younger male sex worker, played by Peaky Blinders star Daryl McCormack.

Thompson was clad in a stylish black unbuttoned jacket, black shirt, eye-popping neon gold leggings and box-fresh black shoes.

She accessorized her look with a stylish bob cut, fiery red lip stick and glowing foundation which beautifully complemented her own natural glow.

Excited Sydneysiders lined up for the chance to see the two-time Oscar winner in the flesh and Emma did not disappoint.

Emma was recently at the center of a debate surrounding her next movie, which sees her donning a ‘fat suit’ for the role of Roald Dahl’s Miss Trunchbull in a big screen musical adaptation of Matilda.

With the release of the trailer for the anticipated film last week came a debate about whether Emma was the right casting for the key character from Dahl’s beloved 1988 book.

Some commenters have said Emma, who wore a similar suit to play Karen in Love Actually, wearing body prosthetics is ‘offensive’.

One critic wrote on Twitter: ‘Yes, it’s offensive about Emma Thompson wearing a fat suit in Matilda. But the initial failure is that almost every woman Dahl wrote is either a sugar-sweet, pretty, good-natured Miss Honey or a haggard evil (and in his mind, physically disgusting) Miss Trunchbull.’

Another stated: ‘I love Emma Thompson. She’s amazing.

‘However, there are many wonderfully talented plus-sized actresses who are constantly disregarded & should be considered for these roles instead of making a thin actress wear a fat suit.’

Estelle made a brief appearance in the headlines back in 2020, when Sydney Confidential reported many of her fellow students had signed a petition calling for her not to move schools.

Collette had reportedly decided to transfer her daughter to New England Girls’ School (NEGS), a private school at Armidale that offered a unique equestrian center where students can take their horses.

Estella’s school pals apparently rallied behind her by signing a petition to campaign for the youngster, who was in Year 9 at the time, to remain at the school.

Judith Durham, lead singer of The Seekers, dies aged 79

Judith Durham, the lead singer of the legendary Australian band The Seekers, has died at the age of 79.

Athol Guy released a statement on behalf of the band saying their lives had “changed forever losing our treasured lifelong friend and shining star”.

“Her struggle was intense and heroic — never complaining of her destiny and fully accepting its conclusion,” Guy said.

“Her magnificent musical legacy Keith, Bruce and I are so blessed to share.”

Universal Music released a statement saying Durham “passed away peacefully” in palliative care on Friday night following a brief stay in the Alfred Hospital.

Her death was a result of complications from a long-standing chronic lung disease, the record label said.

It released a statement from Durham’s “beloved” sister, Beverley Sheehan, who spoke of their closeness throughout life and shared love of music.

“Judith’s joy for life, her constant optimism, creativity and generosity of spirit were always an inspiration to me,” Sheehan said.

Durham’s nephew Tony Sheehan, speaking for his brother Ben and sister Belinda, said: “We have been blessed to share our lives with her.”

Music legends sold 50 million records

Durham joined The Seekers in the 1960s alongside Guy, Keith Potger and Bruce Woodley and released hits like I’ll Never Find Another You and The Carnival Is Over.

While huge in Australia, they also found success in the United Kingdom and the United States.

The group sold more than 50 million records.

They were joint recipients of the Australian of the Year award in 1967, but split up the following year when Durham left to pursue a solo career.

Twenty-eight years later in 1995, they were inducted into the Hall of Fame.

In 2014 they were honored as Officers of the Order of Australia.

Durham married her musical director, British pianist Rob Edgeworth, in 1969.

In 1990, Durham, Edgeworth and their tour manager Peter Summers were in a car accident in Victoria. The driver of the other car died and Durham suffered a broken wrist and leg.

The fan response made Durham consider reuniting with The Seekers for a Silver Jubilee show. During the meeting, Edgeworth was diagnosed with motor neurone disease. He died in 1994, with Durham by his side.

Durham suffered a stroke in May 2013, during the Seekers’ Golden Jubilee tour. The stroke meant she could no longer read or write, but she eventually made progress in rebuilding those skills. The stroke did not affect her ability to sing.

In July 2015, Durham was named Victorian of the Year for her services to music and number of different charities.

Tributes for ‘a force of nature’

In a statement, Durham’s biographer and The Seekers management team member Graham Simpson said: “This is a sad day for Judith’s family, her fellow Seekers, the staff of Musicoast, the music industry and fans worldwide, and all of us who have been part of of Judith’s life for so long.”

Universal Music Australia and New Zealand president George Ash said Durham was a force of nature.

“Great artists became part of our fabric and our extended family, and Judith Durham was no exception.

“She was a force of nature, constantly energized with a passion for music and life.

“We were all privileged to have known Judith and heard her heavenly voice. We are deeply saddened by her passing and will miss her dearly.”

Cyrus Meher-Homji, a senior vice president at Universal Music Australia and New Zealand, paid tribute to Durham’s “artistry” and told of discovering her brilliance when he was a child.

“How would a five-year-old understand the message and spirit of The Carnival Is Over? Perhaps not, but that is the age at which I first encountered Judith Durham and The Seekers, and I was entranced,” Meher-Homji said.

“In 2011, we at Universal Music Australia were lucky enough to sign Judith Durham to Decca Australia, at which time Judith wrote of her happiness, knowing that ‘the Universal/Decca family now also hold on to my dream and mission to uplift and bring happiness to music fans around the world’.

“High above, the dawn awaits you, Judith. Your artistry will forever be enshrined in our souls.”

Anger over private jet emissions: Tom Cruise, Kylie Jenner, Taylor Swift among A-listers named and shamed

Quaffing champagne at 40,000ft, flying from glitzy party to awards dos and back again in time for bed — it’s a hard life being an A-lister with your own luxury jet.

But the high life has come under fire this week, as celebrities are being named and shamed for their excessive use of private plans.

A single private jet emits as much carbon dioxide in an hour as the average person does in an entire year, with private flights 14 times more polluting (per passenger) than a commercial plane.

Yet their super-rich owners — many of whom boast about their apparent eco credentials — are hopping on and off their jets for trips that last less than 15 minutes. Using data compiled by an international flight tracker, British marketing agency Yard compiled a list of the worst offenders.

So whose plane is the worst polluter? And who’s the biggest climate hypocrite among the high fliers?

Kylie Jenner

THE JET: Kim Kardashian’s younger sister Kylie has been labeled a “climate criminal” for repeated short haul trips on her £60 million jet. Last month, the billionaire social media star, 24, shared a picture on Instagram showing two private plans — her own de ella and one belonging to her rapper boyfriend, Travis Scott — with the smug caption: “You wanna take mine or yours ?”.

She bought the all-white 59.6ft-long Bombardier Global 7500 on a reported spending spree in 2020.

The exterior features her name and a Barbie-pink strip, while the interiors have white seats, pink satin pillows and eye masks (bearing ‘Kylie Skin’, the name of her make-up range) and colored lights that can be set to different hues depending on the time of day. There are Hermes blankets for guests, two bathrooms, a master suite and an on-board wardrobe.

FLIGHTS TAKEN: 64 this year.

SHORTEST FLIGHT: 12 minutes (Van Nuys to Camarillo, both in California).

CO2 EMITTED: 1,682.7 tons — 240 times the average person.

ECO BOASTS: Kylie prides herself on buying eco-friendly products for her daughter Stormi, four, and made her make-up range vegan last year, telling followers she was going ‘vegan and clean’ because it was ‘time to elevate’ for the planet.

TAYLOR SWIFT

THE JET: The 32-year-old singer — worth an estimated £470 million — bought her private plane, a £33 million Dassault-Breguet Mystere falcon 900, in 2011. With its plush cream interiors and in-built flat screen TVs, it features 18 fully reclining seats and a distinctive number 13 on the side (her lucky number and birth date in December).

She used to own two jets but sold the smaller one (worth a mere £4.9 million) in early 2020.

FLIGHTS TAKEN: 170 this year

SHORTEST FLIGHT: 36 minutes (Missouri to Nashville, Tennessee).

CO2 EMITTED: 8,293.54 tons — 1,185 times the average person’s annual carbon emissions of seven tons.

ECO BOASTS: in 2020, Taylor was branded a “sustainable fashion influencer” by Vogue. In another interview that same year, she branded climate change a “horrific situation.”

A representative defended her apparent air miles, saying that her jet is “loaned out regularly to other individuals”. They added: “To attribute most or all of these trips to her de ella is blatantly incorrect”.

OPRAH WINFREY

THE JET: With an estimated net worth of more than £2 billion, it’s no wonder TV host Oprah has her own posh plane. The 68-year-old bought a £62 million Gulfstream G650 in 2016, reportedly after becoming irritated when a female fan asked her for a hug while she was waiting in an airport queue.

The opulent jet, which can comfortably fit 16, is divided into four themed areas: dine, work, entertain and relax.

There’s a double bed, a conference room and a dining area as well as an on-board chef.

FLIGHTS TAKEN: 68 this year.

SHORTEST FLIGHT: 14 minutes (Van Nuys to Santa Barbara, California).

CO2 EMITTED: 3,493.17 tons — 499 times the average person.

ECO BOASTS: “The future of life as we know it is being determined by everything we’re doing — and not doing — now,” wrote Oprah, in a 2019 post calling on fans to do their bit for the environment.

MARK WAHLBERG

THE JET: actor Mark, 51, owns a £9.9 million Bombardier global Express jet, which he bought in 2016. The top-of-the-range model — which he had renovated at vast expense last year — has a large ‘W’ on the tail and such a spacious cabin that the fitness-obsessed star can do workouts on board.

Pictures from his social media show soft beige furnishings and polished wood, as well as several screens so his four children can benefit from the high-speed wi-fi. Mark came under fire last month for taking a series of short flights from London to Dublin (48 minutes) and then on to Shannon (23 minutes) for a round of golf.

FLIGHTS TAKEN: 101 this year.

SHORTEST FLIGHT: nine minutes (Los Angeles to Van Nuys, California).

CO2 EMITTED: 3,772.85 tons — 538.9 times the average person.

ECO BOASTS: in 2020, Mark publicly pledged to give up meat and dairy to reduce its impact on the planet. Yet he has said his jet from him is his “personal 21st century transporter” that takes him “anywhere in the world”.

Kim Kardashian

THE JET: Bedecked in cashmere, the reality TV star’s £124 million jet, ‘Kim Air’, is as gaudy as you might expect. Kim, 41, owns a Gulfstream G650ER, a blingier version of the plans belonging to Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk.

Hers has been customized inside and out, masterminded by interior designer Waldo Fernandez, whose clients have also included Elizabeth Taylor and Brad Pitt. The 18-seater jet features wood paneling, two beds and two bathrooms as well as ‘enhanced air ionisation’, which recreates a fresh breeze at high altitude.

Guests wear slippers from Skims, Kim’s underwear brand, lest they muddy the carpet.

FLIGHTS TAKEN: 57 this year.

SHORTEST FLIGHT: Ten minutes (Van Nuys to Camarillo, California).

CO2 EMITTED: 4,268.5 tons — 609.8 times the average person.

ECO BOASTS: The reality star has spoken in the past about wanting her businesses to be more environmentally-friendly. In 2019, she praised climate activist Greta Thunberg, and, a year later, she tweeted: ‘Climate change is real’ alongside an emoji of a broken heart.

TOM CRUISE*

THE JET: The Top Gun star, 60, owns not one but five private jets — the most opulent of which is the 19-seat Gulfstream IV, worth around £16.5 million.

The aircraft, nicknamed the limousine of the jet world, is decked out with a Jacuzzi and top-of-the-range cinema room, as well as elegant soft furnishings. The actor often flies his private plans himself, having qualified for his pilot’s license in 1994. He also sends them on gratuitous gifting missions around the world.

Last Christmas, he reportedly flew 300 cakes by private jet from his favorite bakery in California to London for the cast and crew of the Mission: Impossible film franchise — a round trip of 5,500 miles.

FLIGHTS TAKEN: 20.

SHORTEST FLIGHT: 12 minutes (Shannon to Killarney, Ireland).

CO2 EMITTED: 149.6 tons — 21.4 times the average person.

ECO BOASTS: In 2019, Tom was among the A-listers criticized for flying privately to Google’s climate change camp in 2019, a faux pas he repeated this May when he took one of his jets to the eco-friendly Cannes film festival.

* Flight data only collected since June 10.

FLOYD MAYWEATHER

THE JET: One of the ‘richest sportsmen of all time’ (his career earnings top £900 million) the 45-year-old retired boxer owns a £50 million Gulfstream G650 jet called ‘Air Mayweather’.

Floyd bought it for his 41st birthday and shares images enjoying massages, haircuts and poker games aboard.

On the outside, the 12-seater jet features the boxer’s surname alongside the letters ‘TBE’ — ‘The Best Ever’.

Floyd also has a fleet of personal pilots, who wear branded uniforms with the insignia ‘TMT’ or ‘The Money Team’.

FLIGHTS TAKEN: 177 this year.

SHORTEST FLIGHT: Ten minutes (within Las Vegas).

CO2 EMITTED: 7,076.8 tons — 1,011 times the average person.

ECO BOASTS: Floyd makes flippant comments about his jet, such as: “When you live this lifestyle, you just wing it”.

The Seekers lead singer Judith Durham died at 79, six decades after the formation of the group

Judith Durham, one of Australia’s best-loved entertainers, has died at the age of 79.

Born in Essendon in Victoria, Durham recorded her first EP at 19 and went on to worldwide fame as the lead singer of folk music group The Seekers selling more than 50 million records.

As part of The Seekers, Durham was one of the first Australian artists to achieve international success, with songs like Georgy Girl, I’ll Never Find Another You and The Carnival Is Over.

loading

The Seekers — comprising Athol Guy, Bruce Woodley and Keith Potger in addition to Durham — moved to the UK in 1964, having formed in 1962.

After recording I’ll Never Find Another You at EMI’s Abbey Road Studios, The Seekers went to number one on the UK and Australian charts.

On their return to Australia in 1967, The Seekers set an Australian record when a crowd of more than 200,000 watched their performance at Melbourne’s Sidney Myer Music Bowl.

They were later named joint Australians of the Year for 1967.

But just over a year later, Durham stunned the music world by leaving the group at the height of its success.

loading

Over the past three decades, The Seekers played a series of comeback concerts.

In 1995, they were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame, with I’ll Never Find Another You added to the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia’s Sounds of Australia registry in 2011.

In 2013, during The Seekers’ Golden Jubilee tour, Durham suffered a stroke, which affected her ability to read and write, while not diminishing her singing skills.

Members of The Seekers, including Durham, were honored as Officers of the Order of Australia in 2014.

In 1967, the band members were named as joint recipients of the Australian of the Year award, the only group to be honored to date.

The band disbanded a year later when Durham left to pursue a solo career but reunited for shows over the coming decades.

In 1995, The Seekers were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame and, almost two decades later, the members were individually honored as Officers of the Order of Australia.

In 1990, the couple and their tour manager Peter Summers were involved in a car accident in Victoria, resulting in the death of the driver of the other car, as well as Durham suffering a broken wrist and leg.

The response from fans prompted a meeting of The Seekers for a Silver Jubilee show. During this meeting, Edgeworth would be diagnosed with motor neuron disease, dying in 1994.

In May 2013, the band reunited again for a Golden Jubilee tour. However, Durham would suffer a stroke that impacted her ability to read and write – including reading music sheets.

Her singing was not impacted by the stroke.

In 2015, she was named Victorian of the Year for her services to music and involvement with charities.

The Sandman: ingenious TV that will inspire an entire generation of goths | Neil Gaman

Nothing lets me know I’m in for a week of tedious emails like being tasked to write about a big-budget fantasy series for this fun TV column. So it is with a heavy heart that I must announce that I have watched The Sandman (available now on Netflix), the Netflix x Warner x DC crossover event of the summer. Do you feel it, sire? A disturbance in the email realm. It can’t be – no! Thousands of people who still have DVD collections are yelling at me in unison about lore!

Anyway, you can stop telling me which subreddits I need to subscribe to, or what arcane maps I need to get out of the library, because I actually like this one. I have a potted history with fantasy television: we had a lot of it a couple of years ago, almost all of it bad, because they ignored the two primary rules for fantasy that I have made up and never actually bothered to tell anybody. Those rules are: good fantasy should ask the question “What if this thing happened? That’d be weird, wouldn’t it?” then set out some uneasy rules to govern that weirdness. That’s it. With that canvas stretched taut, you can tell intriguing human stories over the top of it. What if every man on Earth died in an event? What if a supernatural cabal actually ran the government but started getting nosebleeds and died? What if a book could predict the future? You can paint a vivid world that tells interesting stories from many angles, or you can have a character who is basically on a road trip looking for some golden trinket that magically solves everything, and stretch that story out for exactly as long as the studio is willing to fund it. The former is a lot rarer than the latter, sadly, and culturally we are poorer for it. Anyway, I’m not here to kick Westworld season 4 again.

We should talk about The Sandman though, which is good – possibly very good, and edging on very, very good. It helps that there is rich source material to pull from – a 75-volume comic series, an 11-hour audio adaptation, all coming from Neil Gaiman, who knows how to tell a good goth story – and one that has wisely resisted adaptation thus far. We meet Dream, an endless being older than the gods, who gets captured for 100 years by Charles Dance. While that is happening, his sleepy realm crumbles, and starts to affect the waking world. Jenna Coleman is bouncing around doing something cockney. Stephen Fry does a really good Stephen Fry. There’s a raven that can talk. Boyd Holbrook is having an awful lot of fun playing the Corinthian, a devilish nightmare with teeth instead of eyes. GGwendoline Christie is obviously – perfectly! – Lucifer, the ruler of hell. Dream’s various siblings – Death, Desire, Despair – are whirring around him like little cogs. David Thewlis is, and there’s actually no other way of saying this, “really Thewlissing”.

But two key decisions make The Sandman stand out. As you can probably tell from above, the casting is spectacular. But there’s a great balance of those serious spit-when-they-talk actors alongside light-touch British comedians who temper some of the more po-faced storylines (Asim Chaudhry and Sanjeev Bhaskar, as Cain and Abel, are excellent against Dream’s Tom Sturridge who is very good – and doomed to inspire the sartorial decisions of an entire generation of goths – but playing the whole thing very seriously). This helps too because a lot of the scenes are, well, just a load of computer rendering talking to itself – you can’t really do “gates the height of heaven that lead to a realm of dreams” on a soundstage, can you? – and actors with that levity about them stop it from feeling too soulless. At no point do you think: I am watching a person who is talking to a tennis ball.

Second, while there is a fair amount of “I must go into hell and ask about my helm” trinket-getting, that’s not the only thing going on, and my two favorite episodes were standalone stories within a richer gods-and-monsters world . These two episodes – one set in a diner, one set in the same pub at hundred-year intervals – really show what you can do with one story and one character and one hour of ingenuity, and give the whole series more of an anthology feel than an endless story where someone does hand gestures a lot and magic comes out. I know you’ve been hurt before. I have all the emails to provide it. But here is a modern fantasy series that is worth investing your time in.
