MAFS’ Daniel Holmes and Carolina Santos split – after Olivia Frazer and Jackson Lonie break up

Two Married at First Sight couples have called it quits in one night – with Daniel Holmes revealing he has broken up with Carolina Santos.

He shared the news on Instagram, just hours after Olivia Frazer and Jackson Lonie revealed they had split.

“I’m getting bombarded so much at the moment, considering all the articles outright know about the status of Carolina and I,” he wrote.

“I think it’s been obvious for a while we have gone our separate ways. There’s no right way to deal with these situations.

“I wish Carolina all the best and I know she feels the same for me. We had a very unique experience together full of every emotion possible, but life just has a different plan for us.”

Carolina had previously hinted at the end of their relationship, writing on Instagram: “Smile and no one will see how broken you are inside.”

Earlier on Monday night, Olivia and Jackson announced they were breaking up too.

“After a wonderful 10 months together we have decided to go our separate ways,” they said.

“There has always been a lot of love in our relationship and there will continue to be as we transition into a friendship.

“We have nothing but love and respect for one another, and no one is to blame for the end of this relationship. Simply a case of ‘almost perfect’.

“We hope you all can please show compassion as we navigate this privately.”

The pair were last seen together on Saturday as they attended a friend’s party, and they seemed to be getting their relationship back on track.

Olivia, 28, had taken a five-week trip to the UK after they hit the rocks when Jackson was seen getting close to another woman in Melbourne in May.

Jackie ‘O’ Henderson on Nigella Lawson’s ‘diva moment’ claiming she ‘stormed out’ over Woolies cake

Jackie ‘O’ Henderson has taken a dig at Nigella Lawson just days after the British cook failed to appear on her radio show.

Nigella, 62, reportedly refused to appear on the Kyle And Jackie O show on Friday, leaving her fellow My Kitchen Rules judge Manu Fieldel to face the radio duo alone.

Discussing Nigella’s no-show during Monday’s broadcast, Jackie told her co-host Kyle Sandilands: ‘I think she can be quite precious is what I’ve heard.’

Shock-jock Jackie ‘O’ Henderson, 47, (left) took a dig at Nigella Lawson, 62, (right) during Monday’s broadcast, days after the British cook failed to appear on her radio show

Jackie, 47, went on to speculate that Nigella may dislike their radio show due to an incident that occurred while they were working for Southern Cross Austereo back in the early 2010s.

‘I remember when we had an interview with her at 2Day FM… we were really excited about her coming in,’ she said.

Jackie claimed producers asked Nigella to participate in a ‘cake challenge’ where she would have to guess which cake was bought from Woolworths and which was bought from a patisserie.

‘That doesn’t seem like a hard challenge. That’s easy!’ Kyle interjected.

Jackie continued: ‘I know! Anyway, she walked out. And when I say ella ‘ella walked out’ I mean ella stormed out and said she would never, ever speak to the show again.’

Suddenly losing his temper, Kyle shouted: ‘She can shove it in her a** then!’

Jackie said she believes the cake saga is why Nigella hasn’t visited them for an interview about My Kitchen Rules.

‘I think that’s where it comes from, but I also think that’s being very precious. I mean, why would you get upset about that? It’s not like we’re trying to catch her out, it’s not like it’s [Nigella’s] own cake! It’s just two store bought cakes for a bit of fun,’ she insisted.

Kyle’s rage only grew, as he declared: ‘Who cares what she thinks? [She is] barely relevant anyway!’

Suddenly losing his temper, Kyle shouted: 'She can shove it in her a** then!'

‘Who cares what you think, cooking your pasta. Nothing a bit of KanTong can’t replicate. It’s the same thing,’ he added, referring to the budget Asian-style sauce brand.

It comes after Kyle slammed Manu on his radio show after the pair had a tense chat live on-air.

During the show, French chef Manu, 48, awkwardly said goodbye to Kyle after being grilled about his new co-host Nigella Lawson and why she didn’t want to do the interview with him.

After Jackie mentioned how uncomfortable the interview was, Kyle blasted the culinary star, saying: ‘Who gives as**t what he’s sick and tired of talking about!’

Kyle then ranted about Manu promising that ‘no topic was off limits’ on their KIIS FM show.

‘I’m not here to facilitate other people’s s**t. I like Manu, he can come on and I like the show [MKR]but I’m very shocked about the Nigella [Lawson] thing.’

‘The end was very awkward, I wasn’t sure what was going on there guys? But whatever,’ Jackie O said.

‘What do you mean? I think he felt embarrassed by his co-host (Nigella) let him down, ‘Kyle shot back.

‘Or he’s sick of talking about it,’ Jackie said.

During the chat, Kyle wouldn’t stop probing Manu about why Nigella was a no-show.

‘What’s her problem, apparently I hear, correct me if I’m wrong producers, the network is upset because Nigella’s team said “no way, you’re not going on that filthy show.” Our show, how does that happen?’ Kyle asked.

‘I have no idea, that’s news to me buddy! I will make sure she talks to you next time,’ Manu said with a laugh.

‘I think you’re just being upset for no reason, Kyle,’ Manu added, keen to get off the subject.

Kyle said he thought Nigella was a ‘sweetie’ but isn’t a fan of her management team.

‘Can you sort her team out…’ Kyle asked Manu towards the end of the chat, which was greeted with awkward silence.

Nigella is joining Manu on the My Kitchen Rules reboot this year, replaced disgraced chef Pete Evans.

My Kitchen Rules returns to Seven on Sunday at 7pm.

The Block 2022 recap episode 2: One team walks off and never returns and the judges choose the winner of the House Decider challenge

It’s only day two of The Block and the biggest ever season of the show is already making history.

For the first time a team quits leaving the remaining contestants and host Scott Cam shocked and confused.

Stream the latest episodes of The Block for free on 9Now.

Before we meet the replacement couple we head to Block HQ to find out what judges Shaynna Blaze, Neale Whittaker and Darren Palmer think of the House Decider challenge rooms.

And the teams choose the historic homes they’ll be renovating this year.

Scotty drops a bombshell on the contestants. (Nine)

But first let’s unpack that shock exit.

Scott Cam assembles all the teams for an impromptu meeting. But there’s one notable absence – influencer couple Joel and Elle.

“I’ve just found out that Joel and Elle are on their way to the airport,” he reveals to the remaining teams.

“They have left the show.”

After only just finding out the news himself, Scotty explains that Joel and Elle left the show without saying goodbye.

Sharon speculates that Joel and Elle’s exit could’ve had something to do with a family situation.

“But we knew that had happened before they got onto The Block because he [Joel] had told us that unfortunately his mum had a fall, but she was okay and they’d seen her the week before,” Sharon explains.

RECAP: Five new teams arrive in the country and realize their tree change will be tougher than they thought

The remaining teams want to know if everything is okay. Scotty assures them that all is well and that The Block simply “is not on brand” for Joel and Elle.

“And they also said the toilet paper was too scratchy,” Scotty jokes.

While everyone else is still in total shock from the bombshell Scotty’s just dropped, Sarah-Jane says she “saw it coming.”

“I had a huge ‘I told you so’ moment. I could see it coming from a mile away,” she says.

“They didn’t make any effort to get to know us. They looked miserable the whole time,” Sarah Jane adds.

Joel and Elle’s exit comes after the judges are left confused by their coastal style room in the House Decider challenge.

Before the pair decides to call it quits Joel and Elle gather at Block HQ with the other teams to find out what the judges thought of the challenge rooms and who would get first pick of the houses.

(Nine)

For the challenge Joel and Elle present a room that fits more in Bondi than in Gisborne, Victoria.

“They have smashed the life out of this home and that breaks my heart,” Shaynna says.

Neale advises Joel and Elle to “amp up the heritage in the old part of the house.”

Their room earns them a score of 21.5 out of 30 – placing them fourth. At the time, Joel and Elle seem to take the criticism in their stride and say they were willing to learn from it. Maybe, not.

The judges are “very impressed” by Tom and Sarah-Jane’s guest bedroom. They love their copper and olive color palette and Shaynna says it feels like a boutique hotel. The judges score them 23.5 out of 30.

Dylan and Jenny are up next. The fact that they’re both trades is obvious in their near-perfect execution. The judges adore the VJ paneling in their room but think that their styling is a bit of a “mish mash”.

“They’ve made individually good choices, but all those individual choices don’t work together,” Darren says. Overall, it’s still a great effort that earns them a score of 22.5 out of 30.

Ankur and Sharon are nervous ahead of their room reveal and aren’t sure how the judges will feel about their very rustic approach to the country aesthetic. Sharon says she “just doesn’t want to come last.”

“It does feel country, but I’m not sure which continent that country is on,” Darren says. He warns that their very rustic approach will be “divisive in the market.”

Best friends Omar and Oz are last to be judged. The judges are happy to see that the boys preserved the original paneling but feel that’s where things stopped. Neale wants to see a room that is less generic and has more personality.

“Your room today is not luxe enough boys, but it’s not too far off,” Scotty reassures Omar and Oz before revealing their score of 21 out of 30.

With the scores in, that means Tom and Sarah-Jane take out the first challenge win of the season and get to pick the house they will renew for the rest of the season.

Despite raving about House 4, Tom and Sarah-Jane decide to stay put in House 1.

Runners-up, Dylan and Jenny choose the highly sought after House 4.

Ankur and Sharon pick House 3 – the biggest house on The Block. Joel and Elle choose House 2 which leaves Omar and Oz with House 5.

Of course, with Joel and Elle gone you might be wondering who will renovate House 2?

Enter Rachel and Ryan – a brand new couple that will pick up right where Joel and Elle left off.

They arrive on site with just a day’s notice and are greeted by Scotty. He brings Rachel and Ryan up to speed and they head straight to House 2 to get started.

Carlo Bonomi, the voice of Pingu’s original ‘noot noot’ dies, aged 85

Pingu-lovers are paying tribute to the cartoon character’s original voice actor, Carlo Bonomi, by recalling his iconic catchphrase.

“Noot noot,” echoed through living rooms across the globe thanks to Bonomi, who died on August 6, according to the Italian news site afnews.info, which broke the report.

The 85-year-old from Milan is remembered most as the original voice of Pingu, a cheeky little penguin from the South Pole.

loading

Claymation penguin fans have taken to Twitter to pay respects to Bonomi, who became an integral part of the “sound track” of his city by recording the announcements of the Central Station and Florence Santa Maria Novella Station used until 2008.

loading

American cartoonist Travis Bickerstaff paid tribute to Bonomi in a tweet, saying the “noot noot” would live on.

“If you’re wondering if this will be the end of Pingu, it’s not,” Bickerstaff wrote.

“Other voice actors in the Pingu franchise had carried on Bonomi’s legacy, since he established the ‘Penguinese’ language for the series.”

loading

The claymation children’s show followed the charming penguin, whose light-hearted creativity sometimes got him into trouble but equally as often got him back on his feet.

Bonomi helped earn a global following for Pingu and his family, voicing the first four series.

His cause of death has not been revealed.

Geraldton hairdresser Kim Tran takes a stand to stop harassment and requests for sexual favors

WARNING: GRAPHIC FOOTAGE

A Geraldton hairdresser is fed up with a regular barrage of vulgar harassment she is forced to deal with from men seeking sexual favours, and has called out those who see her as nothing but an Asian “stereotype”.

Mother of one Kim Tran owns a barber shop in the suburb of Rangeway and last week posted a confronting insight into the overwhelming objectification that comes her way.

She resorted to publicly posting one of many text messages — with a phone number included — she has received from customers, requesting extra services. In this instance, the man asked for a “shave and a trim with a happy ending”.

Ms Tran has even put signs up around her store, reminding certain people she is a “hairdresser only”, but still gets these offensive requests almost on a daily basis, both in person and via text messages.

The 29-year-old works two jobs — running a farm with her partner supplying vegetables to Australian supermarkets, as well as her day job at the barber shop, where many of her clients are children and their parents.

Many people think that Asians are mostly prostitutes, so I am often texted or harassed by customers at the store.

She said she was losing sleep over the frequent abuse and vulgarity, and decided it was time to speak up so people know she’s just a hairdresser, no more.

“I am often looked down on by others because I am Asian,” Ms Tran posted. “Many people think that Asians are mostly prostitutes, so I am often texted or harassed by customers at the store.

“I believe there are many other women who have the same problem as me, but the difference is that they don’t dare to say it, maybe because they are shy or don’t want other people to judge them. I feel that isn’t right.”

She works in her salon alone and often keeps her door locked due to constant fear of abuse and break-ins.

“When I have customers I’m confident and keep the door unlocked, but when I’m in here by myself, or with children, I lock the door,” she said.

The Vietnamese woman said she believed the harassment was because of her culture and unfair stereotypes surrounding Asian women.

She claims men show her pornographic images on their phones to make her understand, and said there were instances when men would grope her, despite her not wearing revealing clothing.

“Lots of people come in here and sometimes try and touch me, grab me,” she said.

Ms Tran shared a shocking incident captured on her shop’s CCTV camera, showing a client trying to grope her as he exited the store.

Ms Tran said the text messages she received were taking a toll on her relationship with her partner, and she decided to speak up on social media to save her job and reputation.

“We had a massive argument last week and I told him I was going public. I was nervous because I was worried that they (customers) would make a problem with me. But I thought if I don’t speak it could affect my relationship or my job,” she said.

“What is my daughter going to think when she grows up? I don’t want her to think I am a sex worker or prostitute.”

Ms Tran said she feared if she reported the incidents to the police that people would take revenge on her or her family.

“Sometimes I feel like if I report them they might come back and do something to me,” she said.

Ms Tran said moving to a different location would be difficult because she had built a clientele over two-and-a-half years, and she had customers who supported her business.

I’m getting a little bit scared, and I don’t want to lose this business because I love what I’m doing.

She said many people misunderstood Asian people and often believed the assumptions or stereotypes associated with the culture.

“People go to Asia for a quick trip and be with a girl for a couple nights and pay cheap money. So people think ‘oh, she’s an Asian girl and maybe she does that’, ”she said.

“It has been very rough times here.

“I have so many local people come and support me. I love to cut hair for children, they are so happy when I cut a spiderweb or a design.”

Ms Tran said when she began at the store she felt comfortable working on her own, but now her emotions ran high and she constantly overthought scenarios.

To cope with the sexual harassment, Ms Tran visits a local counseling service and takes sleeping medication.

“I’m getting a little bit scared, and I don’t want to lose this business because I love what I’m doing. So I just ignore it and do what I’m doing,” she said.

Johnny Ruffo shares update on his brain cancer battle

Singer Johnny Ruffo has shared a heartbreaking update on his cancer battle, and says he is “still fighting” the disease.

The brave 34-year-old X Factor finalist shared a series of pictures showing how he has fought to survive his bout with brain cancer.

Ruffo, who also starred on Home and Away, included pictures of a large scar across his head after brain surgery, as well as images of his girlfriend Tahnee Sims offering him support.

“Exactly 5 years to the day since my diagnosis. Still fighting this son of ab***h,” he wrote.

“Thanks for all the support!”

Ruffo was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2017 after suffering blinding headaches.

He had a 7cm tumor removed from his right frontal lobe, and revealed that he would have died if he had not gone through with the operation.

The surgery took 11 hours and there was 20 per cent chance he would die on the operating table.

The procedure was a success and in 2019 he was told he was in remission, something he described as the “greatest day of his life”.

But heartbreakingly, the talented performer was told in 2020 that the cancer had returned.

“It is with a heavy heart that I have to let you know I now have another huge battle ahead of me as my brain cancer has returned, though I will dig deep and beat this s*** disease again #f*ckcancer,” Ruffo said at the time.

At one point Ruffo had four seizures in 11 days and he started forgetting the lyrics to songs.

The 2011 X Factor finalist won Dancing with the Stars in 2012, and made an emotional return to the show last year during the season finale.

“I forgot how hard it was but I also remember how much fun it was,” Ruffo said of his performance.

“It was hard to get through it but we ended up getting through there. Thanks for having me back.”

Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie banished by Princess Diana after fallout with Fergie | Royal | News

Princess Beatrice dons floral dress to attend Wimbledon

Princess Beatrice celebrates her 34th birthday on Monday. The royal, who remains largely out of the spotlight, is likely to spend the occasion privately, likely in the company of her husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, daughter Sienna and step-son Wolfie. Beatrice and Edoardo divide their time between St James’s Palace in Westminster and the Cotswolds.

Their London residence is just a two-mile walk from the current home of Kate, Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William, although it has been reported that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will soon be relocating to the Windsor estate.

The relationship between Beatrice and her sister Princess Eugenie and the Cambridges has been the subject of speculation in recent weeks.

Royal commentator Neil Sean claimed that the two princesses have been “struggling” with the Duke and Duchess after the removal of Prince Andrew from public life.

He told Express.co.uk: “There is a big story breaking in the Royal Family that has remained largely under the radar, and it’s to do with Prince William, the Duchess of Cambridge, and William’s father Prince Charles.

Harry ‘not welcomed’ by Anne and Sophie Wessex at Philip’s funeral — unearthed accounts

“According to very good sources, Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice are seemingly struggling to remain cordial with Prince William, Catherine and Charles.

“It stems from the deal organized by William, the Queen, and Prince Charles to remove their father Prince Andrew from royal duties following his disgrace in recent years.”

Beatrice and Eugenie are believed to have once been close with their cousin, with royal biographer Tina Brown describing the pair as the “favorite cousins” of the Duke and his brother Prince Harry.

However, in her 2022 book ‘The Palace Papers’, Ms Brown recounted an earlier obstacle in the royals’ relationship, claiming that the princes’ mother Diana, Princess of Wales “banished” the York sisters from seeing her boys.

Ms Brown noted how important Diana’s sons were to her, referring to the times the princess took the two boys “to theme parks, shooting ranges, films,” and mentioning Diana breaking royal protocol as she “kicked off her shoes and ran barefoot in the mothers’ race” at Harry’s nursery.

Princess Diana with William and Harry

But, the royal biographer also claimed that “there was a destructive side to Diana’s mothering,” adding that a “rampant insecurity” dictated that the Princess of Wales “always needed to be first in her boys’ hearts”.

Ms Brown described Diana’s “pattern of cutting out people” the two princes cared about, which “continued throughout their childhood”.

She claimed a falling out between Diana and Sarah Ferguson saw the princess “banish” the boys’ “favorite cousins” — Beatrice and Eugenie.

The late princess allegedly “fatwa’d her sister-in-law for revealing she had developed verrucae after borrowing Diana’s shoes.”

Diana and Sarah — affectionately nicknamed Fergie — had a complicated relationship, which over the years saw them as rivals, best friends and all that comes in between.

Long before the two women married into the Royal Family, the pair had a friendship, given that they were fourth cousins and their mothers went to school together.

However, they only became close in 1980 — when Diana was 19 and Fergie was 21.

Fergie was invited to the Royal Wedding of Diana and Prince Charles in 1981, and soon became a confidant for the new princess as she came to terms with all things royal.

The Palace Papers by Tina Brown

Sarah later wrote in her 1996 autobiography: “She was two years younger than I, and I strove to support and protect her as I would a younger sister — as I still do today, as a best friend.”

It was Diana who introduced Sarah to Prince Andrew, and as her friend entered the royal fold, the Princess of Wales took on a protective and guiding role.

Sarah brought out the fun and cheeky side of Diana, which often got the royal sisters-in-law in trouble with the Firm and criticized by the press.

But as sisterly relationships often go, beneath the close bond was a certain amount of rivalry.

Fergie impressed the Queen Elizabeth II with her pilot’s license, won over Prince Philip by taking up open carriage driving, one of the Duke of Edinburgh’s favorite past-times, and excelled at the kind of sports that the royals love, but Diana wasn’t good at, including skiing and horseback riding.

The Princess of Wales revealed to her biographer Andrew Morton, that Fergie “wooed everybody in this family and did it so well. She left me looking like dirt,” adding that Prince Charles told her “I wish you would be like Fergie — all jolly.”

But when both of their relationships broke down, the two women leant on each other for support.

By 1992, when they both officially separated from their husbands, Diana and Fergie were closer than ever.

However, 1996 saw Diana stop speaking to Fergie altogether, allegedly because of the way her former sister-in-law wrote about her in her autobiography, which came out in the November of that year.

When Diana tragically died in August 1997, the pair had not reconciled.

Princess Diana and Sarah Ferguson

Sarah attended her old friend’s funeral and later told Harper’s Bazaar: “Because we were like siblings… we rowed. And the saddest thing, at the end, we hadn’t spoken for a year.”

She continued: “I tried, wrote letters, thinking whatever happened didn’t matter, let’s sort it out.

“And I knew she’d come back. In fact, the day before she died she rang a friend of mine and said: ‘Where’s that Red? I want to talk to her.'”

Some 25 years later, it is understood that Beatrice and Eugenie are particularly close with their cousin Harry and his wife Meghan Markle.

Eugenie is the only member of the Royal Family to visit the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in Montecito, California, and until recently resided in their former royal residence Frogmore Cottage.

‘It was lockdowns and not being able to see my family, not being able to have the support, living in AFL hubs, having a husband that was on the road constantly and having to live under all these strict guidelines in order for him to continue to play football.’

The mother-of-two went on to say she felt ‘mentally and emotionally depleted more than anything else’.

‘It’s probably taken me till about now to come right,’ she added.

In December, Jesinta revealed that welcoming two children in the last two years has ‘tested’ her marriage to Buddy.

She confessed to Stellar that both she and Buddy have struggled to spend quality time together due to their duties as parents.

What is Postnatal Depletion?

According to Bellybelly.com, postnatal depletion is a condition that involves both physical and emotional fatigue.

It often involves:

– Intense fatigue and exhaustion – and falling asleep without meaning to

– Lethargy

-Hyper vigilance

– Difficulty concentrating

-Anxiety

-Poor memory

– Loss of libido

– Worsening of pre-existing medical conditions

– Poor immune function

‘A lot of people don’t talk about how hard it is on your marriage having children,’ she said.

‘We really haven’t had much time just us two without the kids, but we’re a very tight-knit family.’

She continued: ‘It’s definitely not perfect, but we try to focus on being a team and facing the challenges together,’ she said of herself and Buddy.’

Jesinta also praised her husband for being a proactive and doting father to their children.

‘Bud is so hands-on and supportive, and I really missed that when he was gone. I’m really lucky to have a partner who is such an amazing father,’ she said, referring when he was away for the footy season.

Meanwhile, the couple are reportedly planning to sell their luxury home in Sydney’s eastern suburbs and relocating to the Gold Coast.

The rumors come amid reports Buddy is looking to either leave the Sydney Swans for a new club or retire from footy altogether, after he was asked to take a 50 per cent pay cut in 2023.

Jesinta, who hails from the Gold Coast, has also recently expressed her desire for the couple to live closer to family.

Rumors of the pair’s move to the sunshine state were published in The Daily Telegraph last week.

The publication contacted real estate Paul Biller from Biller Property agency, who listed the couple’s previous home in the affluent suburb of Rose Bay in 2020.

He sold their semi-detached property in an off-market deal for $3.8million and denied reports that the couple’s home was publicly listed.

Jesinta said she felt 'mentally and emotionally depleted more than anything else. It's probably taken me till about now to come right,' she added

The Franklins currently live in a luxury ground-floor apartment located nearby, which they also bought off-market.

Jesinta sparked rumors of the move after she spoke to Body+Soul in May about her husband’s football career and the family’s future plans.

‘I think there’s still a lot of good football left in him, but it’s our dream, whether that’s in five years or 10 years or whenever, to be able to live closer to one of the grandparents and have quality time.

Reel lives: how I tracked down the class of NME’s C86 album | indian

Yot was in the last box I looked in. I reached in and there was the treasure I sought: a cassette tape, battered and scratched, but its gold cover nonetheless shining through the murk of the attic. The cassette – called C86 – was one of three dozen compiled by NME during the 1980s, sold to eager readers in exchange for a £2.95 postal order to cover post and packing. It was money well spent. Several of the bands included on C86 would subsequently gallop forward in their careers – the likes of Primal Scream, the Soup Dragons, the Wedding Present and Half Man Half Biscuit.

But, by including tracks by shorter-lived lesser lights such as Miaow, the Servants and the Mackenzies, it became a reliable barometer reading of the bands in NME’s orbit in the spring of 1986. These groups laid the foundations for later outfits such as the Stone Roses, Oasis and Arctic Monkeys who took indie “overground”, swapping upstairs rooms in pubs for headline slots at the biggest festivals.

Sign up to our Inside Saturday newsletter for an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the making of the magazine’s biggest features, as well as a curated list of our weekly highlights.

Although conceived to be simply the latest of NME’s cassettes, C86’s immediate impact was to accidentally give birth to a subgenre of indie music – imaginatively titled C86. Quickly reduced to a sneering, single-line stereotype that described such bands as either jangly, fey or shambling (or a combination of all three), any scene that may or may not have existed was quickly dismissed. Some bands managed to sidestep the C86 tag and carry on their way; these were the less jangly, more discordant outfits such as Stump, Bogshed and Big Flame. Others that fitted the stereotype would forever feel confined by its straitjacket.

The cassette’s rediscovery in the attic set in motion the idea of a book: to hunt down members of all of its 22 bands more than 35 years on. I was fascinated to find out what cards life had dealt them. As several months of subsequent detective work would uncover, his alumni had taken many and varied paths through life. Some became pop stars: Primal Scream’s Screamadelica won the first ever Mercury prize in 1992, the Soup Dragons played to 20,000 people at Madison Square Garden and the Wedding Present scored 18 Top 40 hits. But most of the other 19 bands could only watch on in envy at these successes as they headed back to Civvy Street.

In the age of social media, there was a danger that these musicians would be too easy to find – a message sent in 10 seconds flat, an answer received within the hour. But, thankfully, a fair proportion of the class of C86 had gone to ground, requiring an old-fashioned means of detection: trawling through phone directories. This was my main tactic for tracking down the four elusive members of Glossop’s most famous musical sons, the Bodines. Similarly, the lead “He runs a bike shop in the Highlands” was the dangling carrot that led me to pinpoint the whereabouts of Shop Assistants guitarist David Keegan.

One by one they agreed to be interviewed. Invariably, they would ask who else had confirmed. If, say, members of the Pastels or Age of Chance or the Mighty Lemon Drops were on board, that was enough for them. Some would tend old phone numbers of their former bandmates, keen for each of these missing persons cases to be solved. In the end, no band wanted to be left out, for their story not to be told. When I secured an interview with the drummer from the 22nd and last band to respond, I punched the air in delight. Relief, too.

Where possible, I aimed to interview each person in the context of their life now, ideally before the backdrop of some aspect of their everyday existence. So Keegan was lightly grilled over the counter of that shop in Kingussie as he advised customers about obscure bike parts, while former A Witness singer Keith Curtis, now tour manager for PiL, was interviewed during the din of a soundcheck in Manchester. In Lancaster, I spoke to the Bogshed bassist who became a caricaturist at weddings, while down in Croydon I found the ex-member of the Shrubs who later trained as an actor and found gainful employment as Jeremy Irons’s body double.

I was happy to go the extra mile, often at unsociable hours. I spoke to the Wolfhounds’ frontman David Callahan, now a noted ornithologist, when we went birdwatching on Rainham Marshes at the crack of dawn. At other times, for other people, a cuppa in a sitting room or a pint in a saloon bar sufficed. The book has a tremendously varied cast, with those still able to make their living through music by joining teachers, shopkeepers, scientists, novelists, social workers, security guards, academics, radio producers and more in my time machine.

Whatever the vocation, I heard stories told with warmth, candour and, fairly frequently, regret. There were many such of “could haves” and “should haves”, of wrong turns taken in the flush of floppy-fringed youth. But most had now made peace with those times. They showed a middle-aged, mellowing pride at how far they had traveled along the road to whatever promised land they were aiming at, be it a big record deal, appearing on Top of the Pops or even just securing another session for John Peel. As the former Wedding Present guitarist Peter Solowka, sacked from the band in 1991 but holding no grudge, told me: “It’s not what might have been. It’s what was.”

A few interviewees’ reminiscences were initially hazy, requiring some encouragement to bring them into focus. Others were instantly pin-sharp in their memories as they recalled precise details from back in the day. The names of long-lost venues and recording studios. Verbatim quotes from a precious live review. The amount of Enterprise Allowance cash they received each week that allowed them to keep dreaming their musical dreams.

Traveling from Hove to the Highlands, from Whitstable to Wirral, the quest became – as the book’s subtitle suggests – something of an odyssey. An overblown description? Possibly. But I did at least have an encounter with a cyclops – namely Fred, the one-eyed pooch belonging to ex-Soup Dragon Sean Dickson, which we took for a walk in the local cemetery.

There were, though, no sirens trying to lure me to my death through song. The nearest I came was when sitting in on the first rehearsal since pre-pandemic times of the Birmingham five-piece Mighty Mighty, reconvened to play to an audience of just me. But five follicly challenged men on, or just over, the brink of turning 60 do not make seductive sirens. Still, they sounded just as sprightly and glorious as they had several decades earlier, even if they now needed to take fistfuls of painkillers afterwards to ward off the effects of a four-hour rehearsal.

I zigzagged my way up and down the country, supping decaf hot beverages in the West Midlands with the still-lively pop-punks We’ve Got a Fuzzbox and We’re Gonna Use It, and perusing the wares of the vintage/retro shop in Harrogate run by Steve Elvidge, the ex-singer of Age of Chance. The plans for a bike ride with Nigel Blackwell, Half Man Half Biscuit’s resident sage, were scuppered when a monsoon-like downpour fell on Birkenhead. We stayed indoors instead.

Others were found farther afield. The Mighty Lemon Drops’ guitarist Dave Newton was hunted down to California where he’s a record producer for hire, operating out of his studio in his double garage. He even formed a covers band – the C86 All Stars – to play the indie hits of the mid-to-late 80s. Dave was clearly still happy to be associated with C86. For many of the bands, the cassette provided their careers with a springboard, often involving signing for a major label. For others, it was a millstone that was hard to shed, a pigeonhole impossible to escape.

“There was an upside as well as a downside,” concludes Stephen McRobbie, of the Pastels. “There’s no doubt that it helped us to reach a larger audience. We probably benefited. But it became more of a signifier than any of us imagined…”
