Anne Heche is ‘not expected to survive,’ family says in statement

Anne Heche, who remains hospitalized after crashing her vehicle into a The Angels residence last week, is “not expected to survive”, according to a statement from her family and friends.

“Unfortunately, due to her accident, Anne Heche suffered a severe anoxic brain injury and remains in a coma, in critical condition. She is not expected to survive,” the statement read.

“It has long been her choice to donate her organs and she is being kept on life support to determine if any are viable.”

Anoxic brain injury occurs when the brain is deprived of oxygen.

Last Friday, Heche was in a car that was traveling at a high speed when it ran off the road and collided with a residence that became engulfed in flames, Los Angeles Police Public Information Officer Jeff Lee told CNN.

A woman inside the home at the time of the crash suffered minor injuries, but did seek medical attention, according to Lee.

He has remained in critical condition.

This week, a spokesperson for Heche told CNN the actress suffered “significant pulmonary injury requiring mechanical ventilation” and “burns that require surgical intervention.”

“We want to thank everyone for their kind wishes and prayers for Anne’s recovery and thank the dedicated staff and wonderful nurses that cared for Anne at the Grossman Burn Center at West Hills hospital,” the statement continued.

In their message, her family and friends also paid tribute to Heche’s “huge heart” and “generous spirit.”

“More than her extraordinary talent, she saw spreading kindness and joy as her life’s work – especially moving the needle for acceptance of who you love,” the statement read.

“She will be remembered for her courageous honesty and dearly missed for her light.”

She rose to fame on the soap opera “Another World”, where she played the dual role of twins Vicky Hudson and Marley Love from 1987 to 1991. She earned a Daytime Emmy Award for her performance on the show.

He followed that success with numerous films, including “Donnie Brasco,” “Wag the Dog” and “Six Days Seven Nights” opposite Harrison Ford.

In more recent years, Heche has appeared in television shows like “The Brave,” “Quantico,” and “Chicago PD”

Following the crash, there was an outpouring of support for the actress from the Hollywood community.

Her ex and former “Men in Trees” co-star James Tupper, with whom she shares one of her two sons, wrote on Instagram: “Thoughts and prayers for this lovely woman, actress and mother tonight Anne Heche. We love you.”

Selma Blair opens up about why she ‘stopped looking in the mirror’

selma blair has revealed she “stopped looking in the mirror” after starting her treatment for multiple sclerosis.

The 50-year-old actress has opened up about her approach to beauty, self and style in a new interview with InStyleadmitting that when her grueling treatment started for MS, she didn’t have much care for anything.

“After I had treatment, I’d honestly… stopped looking in the mirror,” she said. “My hair was short, I was bloated, I had alopecia on my lashes and my face.”

She adds: “It was all so much effort – I sometimes don’t see well – so I just stopped, and I didn’t think I missed it.”

When Blair was diagnosed with the condition in 2018, she experienced every symptom; vision loss is one of the first and most tell-tale signs.

MS sufferers can also experience muscle and joint pain, fatigue and impaired coordination, and these symptoms affect people at varying degrees across their life.

Though she had no interest in fashion or make-up while in the throes of her chemotherapy, the Cruel Intentions actress quickly realized that she was missing it a little bit.

Blair has always had a love for dressing up, regularly fronting red carpets with eye-catching numbers and chic silhouettes.

She likened the moment she decided to pick up a make-up brush in the midst of her MS to “waking up again”.

“It was a real turning point for me,” she says. “It was like, ‘OK, let’s start waking up again.'”

Blair’s emotional journey of diagnosis and treatment has been captured in the documentary Introducing Selma Blairdirected by Rachel Fleit.

The documentary follows Blair as she undergoes hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and as the world shifts due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The star is now in remission, but keeps things candid on her Instagram account, continuing to raise awareness of MS, and provide a safe space for others in the community.

Melbourne TikToker reveals her dad set her up with boyfriend

A television publicist who swore off dating apps has revealed the unusual way she met her current boyfriend.

Alice James took to TikTok in June while she was getting ready for a blind date when she revealed her father had set her up.

“Three weeks ago I made the decision to get off all the dating apps – I just wasn’t having fun, I was feeling like crap and it was taking it’s toll,” she said.

“Fast forward, last week I was with my dad at the local pub, having a drink and talking sh*t and Dad was like ‘I don’t know if you notice but there is a real hottie sitting at the bar,’” she said.

Ms James, from Melbourne, revealed she had noticed the man as soon as she and her dad had walked into the pub.

“Dad said, ‘Leave it with me’ and he just started chatting about footy with the guy,” she said.

“Then Dad asked, ‘Are you was single’, and the dude was like yeah I am, and Dad was like “My daughter is single, she’s right over there.’”

She said the trio began to chat but when the man went to leave, Ms James’ father insisted the younger duo swap numbers.

She said following exchanging numbers the duo continued to speak and set a plan to meet.

A month later, Ms James broke the news to her dad the pair were officially a couple, calling the man she met at the pub her “boyfriend”.

Followers of Ms James’ account were over the moon, congratulating her on the status of her relationship.

“So good! I bet your dad will love to brag about this,” one person commented.

Another said: “I need your dad as my wingman!”

One person said their own father needed to step up his game and help her out.

Introvert or extrovert: Everyone on TikTok thinks they’re an introvert, but the truth is ‘layered’

There’s been a weird trend on my social media pages of late – and it’s time to talk about it. Everyone is claiming to be an introvert, and all those people clearly think they’re better than others because of it.

It’s become so much so that it’s really starting to feel like people claiming to be introverts are the new hipster … except that no one seems to know what an introvert actually is.

For example, on of the most popular TikTok videos under #introvert on TikTok says the four things you should never do to an introvert are invite other people to something without telling them, video chat out of nowhere, take them to a gathering then just ditch them and finally to volunteer them to speak in front of a group.

Am I a secret introvert, or are these all just common social expectations and courtesies you should follow for any type of person?

It’s just a bit rude to invite someone else to an intimate gathering without a heads up. Calling or video chatting out of nowhere if you’re under the age of 35 is straight up serial killer behaviour.

I love being social and meeting new people, but if my friend took me to a party where I didn’t know anyone and then proceeded to ignore me for the rest of the night, I could only assume they weren’t a very good friend .

And finally, I can talk to absolutely anyone at a party, but put me on stage in front of those people and my brain freezes – so is anyone actually forcing people to speak in front of groups against their will?

Maybe the problem is that people are confusing bad friends for their own introversion.

But I’m getting ahead of myself – let’s narrow down what being an introvert or extrovert actually means.

What is an introvert?

“Introverts and extroverts basically refer to personality types that operate on each side of the spectrum when it comes to personality traits and their approach to socializing,” explained psychologist Nancy Sokarno from online counseling service Lysn.

“Introverts by nature are typically quiet and reserved, and often prefer spending time alone. Extroverts on the other hand operate on the opposite end of the spectrum and are considered outgoing, loud, and enjoy attention from others, along with socializing with others.”

Pretty simple really, yet my socials tell me there are a lot of myths around introverts and extroverts that we need to just nip it in the bud.

Why are we seeing a rise of self-proclaimed introverts?

According to Ms Sokarno, it’s yet another change brought on by the global pandemic.

“The past three years with the pandemic meant that many of us were forced to spend our lives that way,” she explained.

“The pandemic meant we couldn’t really socialize. We even had to cover up a bit of our faces with masks which meant many of us weren’t connecting with people in a way we are used to, or even were avoiding interactions altogether.

“That in itself meant some people got used to spending their time in the same way an introvert might (even if they previously didn’t consider themselves someone who would do that).

“Some people also found that they preferred spending time alone and may now have decided that they are in fact an introvert.”

Neither is superior

You may be wondering why this introvert trend has rubbed me up the wrong way, and the answer is: because of the strong “pick me” vibes these videos come along with.

In exactly the same way self-proclaimed empaths did before them, and hipsters did even before that, self-proclaimed introverts on TikTok talk about introversion like an exclusive club of unique and deep-thinking people. Their videos come with a clear message that they believe they’re “not like other people”.

The way you like to socialize has very little to do with your level of creativity, your ability to think, or even necessarily if you like to unwind alone after a social gathering – so everybody just calms down.

“Everyone’s psychology is incredibly layered, so it really depends on the specific person,” says Ms Sokarno.

Social anxiety doesn’t necessarily equate to introversion

Despite what my TikTok feed wold have me believe, you can have social anxiety no matter what end of the personality spectrum you lie on – especially after two years of on-again-off-again lockdown.

“It’s actually a lot more nuanced than we think,” said Ms Sokarno.

“For example, you might have someone who is considered an introvert, yet they love public speaking. Someone who has social anxiety wouldn’t be as comfortable getting up on stage talking to people. There are many factors that can be at play, it isn’t as black and white.”

For that matter, needing time to unwind on your own after being social isn’t a trait reserved for introverts either.

“Generally it’s said that introverts often need time alone after being social,” continued Ms Sokarno. “It might be in the introvert’s nature to find solace by themselves, but this doesn’t mean they’re more prone to needing to be alone after every social event.”

Even introverts crave social connections

Being an introvert doesn’t mean shutting yourself off from the world entirely, says Ms Sokarno.

“As humans, we do crave social connections and it is important for everyone’s wellbeing – including introverts,” she said.

“It’s important to make sure we are giving ourselves what we need, while not forgetting about our fundamental requirements of being a human. We need others, so from time to time, we have to socialize.

“Ultimately, it’s all about finding the right balance and what works best for your personality type.”

Most people are a bit of both

Nothing ever made more sense to me than when I first heard of the term “ambivert”.

The fact is, while introvert and extrovert may be opposite ends of the personality spectrum, most of us exist somewhere in the middle, with a mix of both that inform our preferences and tendencies.

Which probably explains why I love to go out and be around people, but after a busy week of socializing I spend the next week talking to as few people as possible.

It also explains why most people would call me outgoing, but some people have only known me as a shy and quiet person.

Basically, the only thing that really pays off, in terms of being an emotional healthy human, is “honoring your true feelings”, according to Ms Sokarno.

Lisa Kudrow addresses lack of diversity on Friends

Lisa Kudrow has weighed in on the lack of diversity in Friends and claimed the show’s creators had “no business writing stories about people of colour”.

The actress, who played Phoebe Buffay for 10 seasons, said David Crane and Marta Kauffman likely wrote the series about their own lives and therefore did not have the experiences of being a person of color.

Lisa has previously admitted the series lacked representation, stating that if the hit show was made today, it would include a more diverse cast.

“I feel like it was a show created by two people who went to Brandeis and wrote about their lives after college. And for shows especially, when it’s going to be a comedy that’s character-driven, you write what you know,” Kudrow, 59, told the Daily Beast.

“They have no business writing stories about the experiences of being a person of colour. I think at that time, the big problem that I was seeing was, ‘Where’s the apprenticeship?””

Show creator Marta Kauffman has also publicly expressed the “embarrassment” of how she “didn’t know better” about diversity 25 years ago.

“I’ve learned a lot in the last 20 years,” Kauffman said in an interview with The Los Angeles Times.

“Admitting and accepting guilt is not easy. It’s painful looking at yourself in the mirror. I’m embarrassed that I didn’t know better 25 years ago.”

“It took me a long time to begin to understand how I internalized systemic racism.

“I’ve been working really hard to become an ally, an anti-racist. And this seemed to me to be a way that I could participate in the conversation from a white woman’s perspective.”

Kauffman has since pledged $4 million to support African American students in the US.

The Marta F. Kauffman ’78 Professorship in African and African American Studies “will support a distinguished scholar with a concentration in the study of the peoples and cultures of Africa and the African diaspora” and “assist the department to recruit more expert scholars and teachers , map long-term academic and research priorities and provide new opportunities for students to engage in interdisciplinary scholarship,” the Waltham, Massachusetts-based university announced.

“It took me a long time to begin to understand how I internalized systemic racism,” Kauffman, who is reportedly worth nearly $600 million, told Brandeis.

“I’ve been working really hard to become an ally, an anti-racist. And this seemed to me to be a way that I could participate in the conversation from a white woman’s perspective.”

Kauffman told the LA Times that she has received “nothing but love” since announcing the pledge along with “people acknowledging it was long overdue.”

“In this case, I’m finally, literally putting my money where my mouth is,” Kauffman said. “I feel I was finally able to make some difference in the conversation.”

“I have to say, after agreeing to this and when I stopped sweating, it didn’t unburden me, but it lifted me up. But until in my next production, I can do it right, it isn’t over.

“I want to make sure from now on in every production I do that I am conscious in hiring people of color and actively pursue young writers of colour. I want to know I will act differently from now on. And then I will feel unburdened.”

Gogglebox star Di Kershaw is farewelled at funeral by grieving husband Mick

Di Kershaw enjoyed the fame she found late in her life on Gogglebox Australia, happily posing for selfies with fans of the show.

She liked a lot of things in her 77 years: shopping, trashy gossip magazines, fashion and kombucha and vodka on the rocks in a wine glass.

But as mourners heard at the part-time TV star’s funeral in Sydney on Friday, most of all she was devoted to her husband Mick, children Alex and Victoria and six-year-old grandson Harvey.

To those who knew Di only from Gogglebox she was the stylishly dressed master of withering put-downs as she and Mick dissected television shows on their couch.

The art dealing couple would have celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary last Thursday and had been together 60 years all up.

Mick and Di had been on Gogglebox since its first season in 2015 and were among the most identifiable participants in the Channel 10-Foxtel program.

Diane Lesley Kershaw died of stomach cancer aged 77 on July 22 and chose to be farewelled in a plain timber coffin at the the Garrison Church at Millers Point.

Son Alex, 45, and daughter Victoria, 43, came to the Anglican service to celebrate a life well lived with their 80-year-old father.

Mourners from the art world celebrated the life of Di Kershaw

Alex Kershaw said Mick and Di did everything together – movies on Sunday nights, travel, collecting art – and were out more nights a week than most of his hipster students.

After a long courtship they tied the knot in 1967, the same year Johnny Cash and June Carter released the classic country song Jackson.

‘They got married in a fever, hotter than a pepper sprout,’ Alex said, quoting the opening lyrics of the hit single.

The art lecturer described how Mick and Di did everything together – movies on Sunday nights, travel, collecting art – and were out more nights a week than most of his hipster students.

‘Di’s friends all know she knew how to throw a bloody good party,’ he said.

Alex recalled how his mother liked a glass of red wine – as viewers of Gogglebox would know – ‘but she could not care less if it was a $10 bottle or a $100 bottle’.

She was a woman who did not suffer fools gladly and could run roughshod over anyone who got in her way but cared deeply about all those she loved.

‘She liked to be in control and she wasn’t particularly happy when she wasn’t,’ Alex said.

The service heard Di was an extrovert who stood out in any crowd. She did not watch the nightly news, she believed in astrology and ‘arranged’ food rather than cooking it.

She had always seemed indestructible.

Alex told a series of anecdotes that summed up his mother’s character from all stages of her life.

A natural beauty who had modeled as a teenager, Di described herself before meeting Mick as ‘a gal from Newport that couldn’t be caught’.

She had been expelled from school at 15 after being found at an arts students ball at the old Trocadero dance hall in George Street.

On a 1976 trip to San Francisco she was approached by singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell who wanted to buy the Victorian night dress she was wearing. Say told her she couldn’t have it.

‘Life is for living,’ she used to say.

‘There was a vitality that you could call infectiously effervescent,’ Alex said. ‘She was a warrior queen who walked her talk about her.’

Mick and Di were approached to be on the show by a production scout for EndemolShine at a cocktail party for the opening of an art exhibition at Paddington.

The couple was unfamiliar with the original British Gogglebox but the scout saw they had something together that would appeal to audiences of a local version.

Mick and Di didn’t think about the proposition for long. They had sold their Indigenous art galleries in Darlinghurst and Cairns and had some spare time in semi-retirement.

The pair grew up close to the production staff they invited into their loungeroom, welcoming births and attending the wedding of one member.

They had been looking forward to settling back into the couch to appear on the next season of Gogglebox which begins airing on August 25.

I spent nine weeks in St Vincent’s Hospital at Darlinghurst in Sydney’s inner-city and the last fortnight in the Sacred Heart Hospice next door.

‘Mick is certainly going to miss being bossed around.’ She was ‘giving lip’ right to the end.

Mick previously told Daily Mail Australia that Di’s cancer was inoperable and she chose to stop being fed intravenously.

‘Part of that decision was thinking about us,’ he said. ‘A big part of that decision was not wanting to put us through that.’

Filming of the next season of Gogglebox began early this month and Mick said he would not be doing the show without Di: ‘We were a couple’.

Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke: Who’s who in the House of the Dragon cast?

Audiences are about to plunge into the world of House of the Dragon, and just like its predecessor Game of Thrones, its ensemble cast is made up of well-known stars and “where have I seen them before?” faces.

Here are the main thesps and the roles that brought them to this moment in their professional lives.

matt smith

Character: Prince Daemon Targaryen

English actor Matt Smith is probably most famous face of House of the Dragons‘ ensemble cast, having played British cultural icons Doctor Who and Prince Philip.

Before nabbing the role of the Eleventh Doctor, Smith’s most prominent role had been in 2007 miniseries Party Animals, portraying a political staffer. As David Tennant’s time traveler replacement, Smith was catapulted into the stratosphere when he became the youngest actor to take on the Doctor. He was in the role for three series and five specials.

He followed that up by stepping into Prince Philip’s very expensive, custom-made shoes for two seasons of The Crown, for which he was nominated for an Emmy Award. Smith was praised for capturing the Duke of Edinburgh’s hautiness as well as the royal’s vulnerability to her as the Queen’s mostly powerless consort.

But his time on The Crown was embroiled in controversy when it was revealed Smith had been paid more than his co-star Claire Foy, despite Foy having the larger, more demanding and title role. Foy’s salary was later upped to match his.

Smith parlayed his TV celebrity into movie roles in Terminator Genisys, Charlie Says (where he played Charles Manson), His House and as villainous creeps in Edgar Wright’s stylish thriller Last Night in Soho and comic book vampire flick Morbius. Most recently, he took on the role of a wealthy party host in The Forgivenwhich also starred Jessica Chastain and Ralph Fiennes.

Olivia Cooke

Character: Lady Alicent Hightower

Treading the boards since she was eight years old, Olivia Cooke got her start through a local theater workshop in her hometown of Oldham.

Her first big break came when she landed the role of Emma Decody in Bates Matela prequel series to Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho. Her character de ella had started the show as Norman Bates’ love interest and managed to survive the whole five seasons.

Cooke followed that up as William Thackeray’s scheming social climber Becky Sharp in the 2018 TV adaptation of Vanity Fair – great experience for her role as the manipulative Alicent in House of the Dragon.

On the silver screen, Cooke has been in a raft of studio and indie movies including Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, Thoroughbreads, Sound of Metal, pixie and as one of the leads in Steven Spielberg’s big budget sci-fi epic Ready Player One.

HOTD isn’t Cooke’s only prominent TV role this year – she was also one of the leads in Apple TV+’s spy show Slow Horsesopposite Gary Oldman and Kristin Scott Thomas. Slow Horses has already been renewed for four seasons.

Paddy Considine

Character: King Viserys I Targaryen

A constant presence in film and on TV, English star Paddy Considine has had memorable roles over the years, including as the doomed journalist weaving his way through Waterloo Station in the Bourne Ultimate – it was one of the most suspenseful sequences to feature in a spy thriller, so that’s saying a lot.

His most high-profile film projects have included Justin Kurzel’s Macbeth, The Death of Stalin, Miss You Already, Cinderella Man and two of Edgar Wright’s Cornetto Trilogy, Hot Fuzz and The World’s End.

On the smaller screen, Considine had starred in a series of TV movies called The Suspicions of Mr Whicher and had been making a splash in recent years as a recurring character on Peaky BlindersStephen King adaptation The Outsider and Jude Law series The Third Day.

He’s also a filmmaker, having written and directed Tyrannosaurusa feature he adapted from his own short film, and which starred Olivia Colman, Eddie Marsan and Peter Mullan.

Emma D’Arcy

The humble one-bed flat London Olivia Newton-John called home almost 50 years ago

Residents living in flats in a property where Olivia Newton-John bought her first London home – before she found global stardom – have called for a blue plaque on the building to commemorate her life.

The singer, who died at the age of 73 on Sunday, invested in the humble one-bed apartment almost 50 years ago.

The modest one-bedroomed property in upmarket West Hampstead is a far cry from the £4m luxury ranch in Santa Ynez, Southern California where the star spent her final days with her husband John Easterling, surrounded by family and friends before her death this week.

Deeds show that on March 19, 1973, Newton-John, then aged just 24, spent £19,500 on the second-floor flat with its own small roof terrace just off West Hampstead’s main thoroughfare West End Lane.

A copy of the title deeds and 99-year lease for the property is kept in storage at the Land Registry along with millions of others. The flat’s value, in Dennington Park Road, now rented out, is estimated at around £600,000 these days.

One current occupier of the five other flats in the same building said he was intrigued to notice that groups of people on walking tours would stop outside in the street and gaze up at the second floor.

‘I popped outside and asked them why they were there,’ he said, ‘and they told me Olivia Newton-John used to live there. I went back and looked at the property deeds, and there was her name de ella, barely legible.

‘I think there should be a blue plaque marking this as the first flat she owned in London, which I’m sure it must be.’

In 1973 Olivia’s fledgling career was going well, but she was still nowhere near the superstar status she would enjoy with her starring role in Grease, playing Sandy opposite John Travolta’s Danny, five years later.

Born in England in 1948, Olivia was aged just five when her parents emigrated to Melbourne, and she said in later life that she always regarded herself as an Australian.

However she returned to London in 1966 after winning the plane ticket and (Aus) $300 in a talent competition called Sing, Sing, Sing the previous year while still at school.

By then her parents, Brin and Irene, had divorced and Olivia’s mother accompanied her daughter to London for her crack at the big time.

Online sources suggest Dennington Park Road was Olivia’s first home in London, as early as 1965, but our research shows she lived in a succession of other rented properties before buying the flat.

Initially Olivia and mum Irene lived in a £9-a-week flat in Perons Court, Hampstead and struggled to get by as Olivia worked the club circuit, later forming a duo for a spell with a friend from Down Under, Pat Carroll.

Olivia’s debut solo single in 1966, Till You Say You’ll Be Mine, written by US songwriter Jackie DeShannon, was recorded at Decca Studios and duly released by the label as part of the prize for winning the Australian television talent competition.

The one-off single was a flop, and it was not until 1971 that Olivia’s first big break came with a cover of Bob Dylan’s If Not For You.

For several years she was in a relationship with The Shadows’ Bruce Welch, living at his flat in London, after working as a support act for the group and Cliff Richard on stage and TV.

Also in 1971 she became a regular guest singer on the prime-time Saturday night BBC TV variety show, It’s Cliff Richard.

Hits followed by Olivia with the country ballad Banks of the Ohio and Let Me be There, both of which did well in the United States.

In 1974 she was chosen to sing the UK’s entry at Eurovision, Long Live Love, coming joint fourth to Abba’s massive debut hit, Waterloo for Sweden.

Dame Olivia, as she would become in the 2020 New Year’s Honours, became a prominent campaigner for breast cancer research, after being given the first of three cancer diagnoses in 1992.

Following her initial battle with the disease, she had a partial mastectomy and reconstruction. Subsequent diagnoses followed in 2013 and 2018, when she told fans she was treating the illness ‘naturally’ and was using cannabis oil for the pain.
