Cairns youth crime punishment warning as city endures record spate of car thefts

Amy Grant couldn’t stop worrying about the worst-case scenario as she drove around Cairns looking for her family’s stolen 4WD.

The keys to the LandCruiser had been taken from the Grant family’s caravan while they slept inside.

It was one of about 800 vehicles reported stolen in the Cairns region so far this year, eclipsing the yearly record set in 2021 in just the first three quarters of the year.

“Let’s have a think about a 13-year-old driving down the Bruce Highway in and out of traffic, going from suburb to suburb,” Ms Grant said.

“As a mum, for those first few days, I’m thinking there’s a likelihood my car could kill a family.”

The theft left her family and their caravan effectively stranded in Cairns, the final destination of an east coast road trip the Albury residents had been enjoying.

Deadly consequences

Car thefts in Far North Queensland have already ended in tragedy this year.

A 14-year-old boy was killed in February when an allegedly stolen car he was a passenger in crashed into a tree at high speed in suburban Cairns.

There have been near misses too.

Police said two pedestrians had to jump out of the way to avoid being hit when a 17-year-old girl drove a stolen car on to a footpath to get away from officers on Sunday evening.

Police have repeatedly pleaded with residents to make their cars more difficult to steal by ensuring their vehicles and homes were locked and keys kept in a secure place.

Alternatives needed

Criminologist Shannon Dodd, from Australian Catholic University, said taking a purely punitive stance against young offenders “could actually make it worse.”

“I understand why these issues cause a lot of community concern and certainly as a parent, I can understand wanting to feel safe,” Dr Dodd said.

“But as a criminologist and knowing the research, I couldn’t justify approaches which are aimed at taking a harsher stance toward these young people; throwing the book at them per se.

“I know that’s what a lot of people call for but unfortunately, what we might see as the likely result of that is individuals becoming entrenched in the justice system.”

Dr Dodd is helping lead a new six-week trial program for up to 20 young people aged 13 to 20 that aims to better understand why at-risk youth choose to go joyriding in stolen cars.

The program, to take place in Townsville, will combine educational sessions with hands-on activities “that get their heart racing”.

Mareeba Shire Mayor Angela Toppin said she wanted juvenile offenders sent to remote areas to take part in diversionary programs.

“These are young 10, 11, 12-year-olds, 13-year-olds maybe, [who] can be sent to gain both social and vocational skills rather than be sent to a youth detention facility,” she said.

Queensland Police and Corrective Services Minister Mark Ryan have been contacted for comment.

DEATH VALLEY NATIONAL PARK, Calif. — A main roadway into Death Valley National Park will remain closed into next week as crews clean up after record-breaking rains damaged the roadway and choked it with mud, rocks and debris.

Flash flooding in the park last week trapped hundreds of hotel guests and partially buried about 60 cars and trucks in mud. No injuries were reported.

The California Department of Transportation said about 30 miles (48 kilometers) of State Route 190 were partially or fully buried with debris and about 20 miles (32 kilometers) have been cleared.

However, the route will remain closed at least through Aug. 17 from Trona Wildrose Road/Panamint Valley Road to State Route 127 in Death Valley Junction, Caltrans said in a statement.

“As our crews continue to remove debris. They have found several damaged sections of highway with complete shoulder loss, damage to asphalt, and undercutting of the roadway,” Caltrans District 9 Director Ryan Dermody said.

Some of the debris collected will be used to fill in eroded road shoulders, Caltrans said.

On Monday, flash flooding from a monsoonal moisture system also closed a 5-mile (8-kilometer) stretch of road and prompted the evacuation of the southern portion of Joshua Tree National Park, another desert park about a 4-hour drive south of Death Valley.

No injuries were reported.

Death Valley National Park, located near the California-Nevada state line, has over 1,000 miles (1,609 kilometers) of roadway across 3.4 million acres (1.3 million hectares).

The record-breaking rains last Friday dumped 1.46 inches (3.71 centimeters) of rain at the Furnace Creek area. That’s about 75% of what the area typically gets in a year, and it is more than has ever been recorded for the entire month of August.

Since 1936, the only single day with more rain was April 15, 1988, when 1.47 inches (3.73 centimeters) fell, park officials said.

Holden ZB Commodore brake booster recall

Holden has recalled almost 14,000 examples of the last car to wear the Commodore badge.

Sold to customers between 2017 and 2020, Holden’s ZB Commodore was a last roll of the dice from a brand clinging to life in Australia.

A recall notice for the European-sourced machine says the car’s brake booster may fail due to a manufacturing defect.

“If this occurs the stopping distance in the un-boosted condition would exceed the distance prescribed by the Australian Design Rule (ADR) 31/03,” the notice says.

“If the brake booster does not operate as intended, it could increase the risk of an accident causing serious injury or death to vehicle occupants and/or other road users.”

Holden finished assembly of locally-built VF Commodores in Elizabeth, South Australia in 2017. The German-built ZB Commodore took its place in showrooms until it was phased out when Holden decided to retire the Commodore name in December 2019.

Holden announced plans to end sales of all new cars in Australia weeks later in February 2020, before closing its local business at the end of that year.

The manufacturer still offers maintenance, repair and warranty work through a service network.

Models affected by the latest recall will receive a free software update that should address the issue.

Parallels Desktop 18 makes Mac gaming better than ever

Parallels has announced the release of Parallels Desktop 18 for Mac. This new version of the popular virtualization software brings several key optimizations for running Windows 11 on Macs, including enhanced gameplay when enjoying Windows games on Macs.

In total, there are four significant changes in the Parallels Desktop 18 for Mac standard edition. The biggest one is the ability to connect a game controller to a Mac, switch to Windows, and start playing by sharing the controller between native and guest operating systems. Parallels also promises that the release should bring better video playback and higher frame rates when gaming.

Other than gaming, Parallels Desktop 18 for Mac standard edition adds full support for Apple’s ProMotion display. This means you can enjoy automatic refresh rate changes. The performance changes are so good that you can assign more RAM and CPU cores and run Windows 11 up to 96% faster on the Mac Studio with Apple’s M1 Ultra chip, according to Parallels.

Two smaller changes in the standard release include improved compatibility of Intel (x86) applications when running Windows 11 on ARM, and improved USB 3.0 to support live data streaming devices, including video capture devices. These cap out the list of new features.

Note that there’s also the Parallels Desktop 18 for Mac pro edition and Parallels Desktop 18 for Mac business edition. These two releases have their own set of features. However, pro includes all features from standard, and business includes both pro and standard features

In the pro edition, you’ll be able to set up various network conditions for a virtual machine, isolate a VM network, use network boot with Linux ARM VMs, and analyze application performance.

In Parallels Desktop 18 for Mac business edition, there are three new functionalities. There’s now convenient SSO/SAML authentication that enables employees to sign in and activate Parallels Desktop with a corporate account. IT admins can also deploy or provision a Windows 11 VM on a Mac, as well as manage Parallels Customer Experience Program participation centrally.

If you’re using Parallels Desktop 17, you can upgrade to the standard edition of Parallels Desktop 18 for $70. New standard licenses are available for $100 a year on a subscription plan, or $130 a year for a one-time purchase. A 14-day free trial is also available.

Last year on an episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians, Khloe weighed in about her relationship with Caitlyn, reported Us Weekly.

The Good American founder revealed that she would talk to the former athlete, ‘probably every blue moon.’

A representative confirmed on Friday that Khloe and her ex, Tristan, had welcomed a healthy baby boy to the world.

The two had been working on having a second child via surrogacy back in 2021 and the announcement that a baby was conceived came to the forefront in November of last year.

That was before the news of the NBA star’s infidelity and fathering a son with Maralee Nichols became apparent in December 2021. The couple officially split following the cheating scandal in January of this year.

The businesswoman hasn’t given a name to her baby boy just yet, and wants to take time to choose the right one, a source informed People.

‘Khloe is on cloud nine. Getting a sibling for True has been such a journey. She is very excited to be a mom again,’ the insider explained, adding how thrilled she is to have a boy.

‘She is taking her time with the name. She wants it to be just right,’ the source close to the mom of two stated.

While she is still milling over a name for her second child, the TV personality took time to upload a tribute post to her daughter.

Khloe shared an adorable snap of True giving a big smile and added a short caption to the post. ‘My happy sweet girl.’

Although the TV star and NBA player have welcomed a second child, the two have not rekindled their relationship.

A source told People, ‘Khloe and Tristan are not back together and have not spoken since December outside of co-parenting matters.’

Weeks before the arrival of her second child, the star split from her private equity investor boyfriend, whose name has yet to be revealed.

A confirmed source of the separation to Us Weekly. ‘They split a few weeks ago, things just fizzled out between them.’

Serena Williams’ parting shot at Margaret Court, nod to Ash Barty in retirement announcement

Serena Williams sounded just the tiniest little bit salty as she reflected on likely finishing her tennis career with one less grand slam title than Australian legend Margaret Court.

Williams’ crusade to win an elusive 24th major title and draw level with Court has been a five-year saga that looks almost certain to end fruitlessly when she retires at this year’s US Open.

The 40-year-old American revealed her plans to end her career to focus on having another child in an article in Vogue Magazine published on Tuesday night (AEST).

Williams referenced Court twice in the piece, and while she was careful with her words left the impression she should be remembered as tennis’ greatest ever player.

“There are people who say I’m not the GOAT because I didn’t pass Margaret Court’s record of 24 grand slam titles, which she achieved before the ‘open era’ that began in 1968,” Williams wrote.

“I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want that record. Obviously I do. But day to day, I’m really not thinking about her. If I’m in a grand slam final, then yes, I am thinking about that record. Maybe I thought about it too much, and that didn’t help.

“The way I see it, I should have had 30-plus grand slams. I had my chances after coming back from giving birth. I went from a C-section to a second pulmonary embolism to a grand slam final. I played while breastfeeding. I played through postpartum depression.

“But I didn’t get there. Shoulda, woulda, coulda. I didn’t show up the way I should have or could have. But I showed up 23 times, and that’s fine. Actually it’s extraordinary. But these days, if I have to choose between building my tennis resume and building my family, I choose the latter.”

Williams stepped onto a hardcourt for the first time in a year and a half on Monday in the WTA Toronto tournament where she fought through to the second round with a straight sets victory over Nuria Parrizas Diaz.

It was her first singles victory since the 2021 French Open, some 14 months ago. The former world number one had played her first singles match in a year during a first round defeat at Wimbledon in June.

“I know there’s a fan fantasy that I might have tied Margaret that day in London, then maybe beat her record in New York, and then at the trophy ceremony say, ‘See ya!’ I get that. It’s a good fantasy,” she wrote.

“But I’m not looking for some ceremonial, final on-court moment. I’m terrible at goodbyes, the world’s worst.”

Another Aussie champion, Ash Barty, also got a mention in Williams’ self-penned article as she revealed how hard she was finding it to walk away.

Barty stunned the tennis world by retiring at age 25 earlier this year.

“I know that a lot of people are excited about and look forward to retiring, and I really wish I felt that way,” Williams wrote. “Ashleigh Barty was number one in the world when she left the sport this March, and I believe she really felt ready to move on. Caroline Wozniacki, who is one of my best friends, felt a sense of relief when she retired in 2020.

“Praise these people, but I’m going to be honest. There is no happiness in this topic for me. I know it’s not the usual thing to say, but I feel a great deal of pain. It’s the hardest thing that I could ever imagine. I hate it. I hate that I have to be at these crossroads. I keep saying to myself, I wish it could be easy for me, but it’s not.”

Push to have giant slide from Berry playground removed after toddler suffers broken leg

A petition has been started to remove a slippery dip at a playground on the New South Wales South Coast, where at least one family is pursuing legal action after more reports of serious injuries.

Shoalhaven’s all-ages Boongaree Nature Play Park at Berry opened in January and since then dozens of parents say the giant slide has left their children with broken bones, facial fractures and burnt skin.

On Monday Mitchell Liddicoat launched a petition urging Shoalhaven City Council to get rid of the slide after his three-year-old daughter, Harlow, broke her leg when they slid down in tandem.

“I couldn’t believe the speed and the force that we actually went down with,” Mr Liddicoat said.

“There’s quite a large kink in the middle of the slide, so we went up one wall and it pretty much catapulted us into the other wall.

“I can’t forget Harlow’s scream.

“It will be with me forever—it was absolutely bloodcurdling.”

Four-year-old’s legs broken

Mr Liddicoat’s concerns echoed those raised by Tisha Fleming, whose four-year-old daughter broke both her legs on the same piece of equipment at the multi-million-dollar playground in April.

According to signs erected at the park by Shoalhaven Council, the slide is designed to “challenge” children “physically and mentally”.

It also warns parents not to assist their children to access or use the equipment.

Mr Liddicoat said the sign was not located near where his daughter accessed the slide.

He felt her injuries could have been much worse if she had not been with her on the slippery dip.

“The main thing for me is the kink in the middle of the slide — if it was a gradient curve that went around, or they could make it a bit smaller, it might stop other kids from getting hurt,” Mr Liddicoat said.

“I think the rest of the park seemed great and I’m not trying to take fun away from other children.

“But you do expect your kids to be safe and not walk away with a broken leg.”

The online petition had attracted about 100 signatures so far.

The ABC is aware of at least one family that is pursuing legal action against the council, as well as another family that has contacted a law firm.

Loopholes ‘hard to activate’

James Govan from Wollongong’s Acorn Lawyers in Wollongong says under the state’s 2002 Civil Liability Act the council has little legal culpability if warning signs are erected.

“It is quite clear in the legislation … there is a particular section in the act which is headed ‘no duty of care for recreational activity where risk warning is given,'” he said.

“If an appropriate risk warning is given the defendant has, at least potentially, a complete defense to any claim.

“It doesn’t have to be a specific warning — it can just be a very general warning and it has to be placed in such a way that it is reasonably likely to bring it to the people’s attention before they use the equipment.”

Mr Govan said waiver forms used at private operations were an even more “powerful force” for protecting businesses and organizations from legal challenges.

“There are loopholes, but it’s very hard to activate them,” he said.

“The claims will always be very strenuously defended by councils, by their insurers and their lawyers.”

Shoalhaven Council has been contacted for a response.

In a previous statement it said the play equipment had been designed and certified as compliant with the relevant standards.

Pelosi says Taiwan trip ‘worth it,’ calls Xi ‘a scared bully’

WASHINGTON — House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Tuesday defended her decision to visit Taiwan despite an aggressive response from China that has included live-fire military exercises in the Taiwan Strait.

“Yes, it was worth it,” she said in her first interview since returning from Asia last week on NBC’s “TODAY” show. “And what the Chinese are doing is what they usually do.”

Pelosi, a California Democrat, said she had received “overwhelming bipartisan support” for her historic visit and reiterated that “China will not be allowed to isolate Taiwan.” She also questioned why her trip de ella has received so much attention, while a group of senators traveled to Taiwan several months earlier and it had no impact. “Did anybody make a fuss?” she asked.

“It was bipartisan, it was high-powered, including the chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee — nobody said a word,” she said. “If they can ignore a trip of five senators in a bipartisan way, why would they decide on my trip, that it would be different. … There’s something wrong with this picture.”

The speaker said Chinese President Xi Jinping “has his own insecurities” and she won’t let him control the schedule of members of Congress. In a separate interview Tuesday on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” Pelosi said Xi is “in a fragile place.”

“He has problems with his economy. He is acting like a scared bully,” she said, adding that Xi is focused on getting re-elected.

China immediately denounced Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, a self-governing island that Beijing claims as part of its territory, and announced it would launch “a series of targeted military actions as countermeasures” to “resolutely defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

China has said Pelosi’s visit violated the “one-China policy,” which is Beijing’s claim to be the sole government of both mainland China and Taiwan.

The United States has long abided by the policy, which means it does not have official diplomatic relations with Taiwan, but does maintain an unofficial embassy on the island.

NAIDOC Week and pay rise negotiations

Each week, Dr Kirstin Ferguson tackles questions on the workplace, career and leadership in her advice column “Got a Minute?” This week, a question about being paid for attending a workshop, corporate box-ticking on NAIDOC week, and what to do when you’re not happy with the pay rise you got.

I have been invited to attend a strategy workshop in an area where I have experience but is outside my day-to-day work. It is being run by a government training provider and the organizers expect me to contribute my ideas for free, even though they end up being used by others without acknowledgement. Most, if not all attendees will be paid directly or indirectly to attend the weekday event but as a Disability Support Worker with private clients, I will lose a day’s wages to attend. I have floated the option of consulting the training provider but have been declined and they say this will be a “good opportunity to network”. I see no value in this and resent losing money and my ideas not being valued. How do I navigate this situation and respond in a way that will leave the door open for future involvement?

Networking and exposure aren't sufficient payment if you're being asked to contribute heavily to a workshop.

Networking and exposure aren’t sufficient payment if you’re being asked to contribute heavily to a workshop.Credit:Dionne Gain

Ah, that old chestnut of “networking opportunity”. You should ask the government training provider if they are forgoing their wages on that day for the “networking opportunity” (only, just kidding, don’t really ask that but you know what I mean!). There are rare occasions when the opportunity to do something far outweighs any payment you might receive. It does not sound like this is one of those opportunities.

My advice is to work out your day rate – at a minimum what you make as a support worker and then some, since the work you do as a consultant will be quite different – and let the training provider know this is your fee for the day . If they decide not to use you, that is up to them. I expect that if you have a certain expertise they can’t replicate, they will understand they will need to pay you to be there. You will then set the expectation with them and anyone else who wants to engage you with that you have a daily rate for your expertise. It is important that you are paid and respected for the value you offer.

My company emailed everyone about the NAIDOC week celebration, which I was looking forward to. Turns out the “celebration” was basically a table with non-Indigenous-inspired snacks and some materials explaining Indigenous culture. Our line manager did not know what to do and the whole thing was lacking to say the least. It reminded me of an International Women’s Day celebration with pretty cupcakes and cute stickers – just another corporate box-ticking exercise with no substance to it. There could have been Indigenous speakers or the very least internal panel to discuss and bring awareness to the organisation. Why the lame effort for something so important? I would have much preferred if they just sent out an email and be done with it, instead of a disjointed and uninspiring celebration.

It is critically important we avoid turning NAIDOC week – or any other efforts to celebrate diversity and inclusion – into just another corporate box-ticking exercise, as you have identified. Sadly it sounds like your employer simply wanted to be seen to be doing something rather than taking the time to think through the purpose and meaning behind NAIDOC week.

Given the theme for NAIDOC week 2022 was Get Up! stand-up! Show Up! I wonder whether your letter is the first step in that process and you have the opportunity now to pass on your feedback and suggestions to your employer for what can be done differently (and not just during NAIDOC week but every week). Does your employer have a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) or other ways to recognize and celebrate Indigenous employees or the Indigenous lands you work on? There are many resources available at naidoc.org.au you can also direct your line manager to if they are unsure of how to proceed.

I have been working in a business I really like it for three years. The people and culture are great. I have recently been offered a promotion but the salary offer was quite disappointing compared to what I am paid now. I was only offered a few thousand dollars more but extra responsibility. To be honest I felt offended by the offer and have told the business owner but I don’t think anything will change in that regard. Considering the market situation I am truly considering moving on. Should I approach them with a final counter offer and advise if that is not met at some point soon, should I be open to new opportunities?

I can understand your disappointment if, in your mind, you think the new role is worth a lot more. However, sometimes it can be short-sighted to move. The grass is definitely not always greener. You are working somewhere you love and you said the people and culture are great. That is worth something – maybe not money – but it is worth something for the moment. The other opportunity you have is to take on a promotion with extra responsibility. The experience you gain in your new role will help you down the track apply for and hopefully obtain jobs that might pay even more.

Vol. 3 Is Live, Here Are All The Skins For The Game’s Last Seasonal Event

With Overwatch 2 on the horizon, it’s almost time to say goodbye to the original game once and for all. There’s no time to be sad just yet though, since Blizzard is throwing a farewell party with Overwatch Anniversary Remix: Vol. 3. The event is now live on all platforms and it runs until August 30.

MORE FROM FORBES‘Overwatch 2’ Won’t Have Another Beta Before Launch

That’s an important date, because Blizzard will no longer sell loot boxes after that time. Loot boxes are going away in Overwatch 2 in favor of a battle pass. You’ll still be able to earn loot boxes in Overwatch in the meantime. Blizzard will automatically open all your remaining loot boxes for you after Overwatch 2 launches on October 4th. (Remember, all your cosmetics carry over to Overwatch 2.)

MORE FROM FORBES‘Overwatch’ Won’t Make You Manually Open All Your Loot Boxes Before ‘Overwatch 2’

But I would recommend opening up your boxes ASAP, especially if you’re running low on credits, like I am. That’s because Anniversary Remix: Vol. 3 has some new twists on some classic skins and some of them are bangers.

Legendary Skins

There are six remixed Legendary skins available during this event. They each cost 3,000 credits in the Hero Gallery. Alternatively, you might get lucky and snag them from the very last Anniversary loot boxes. Of note: if you log in once during the event, you’ll get a free Anniversary loot box.

Tagged Tracer (pictured above)

Graffiti Tracer is my second-favorite Tracer skin. Or at least it was my second fave. The remixed version, Tagged Tracer, is even better. This skin is sick. I need to hurry up and finish writing this post so I can go unlock it.

Genjiman Genji

An obvious play on Ultraman, this is a fresh spin on Genji’s Sentai skin with red and yellow replacing the green. It’s dope, and I must have it in my collection.

Proteus: 76 Soldier: 76

Are you kidding me?!? This is a cleaner take on the Cyborg: 76 skin with a sharper black and gold theme. I love it very much. I don’t know that it will permanently replace Grillmaster: 76, but I will absolutely rotate this in from time to time.

Mechatron Pharah

And it is. Very much yes. This black and purple version of Pharah’s Mechaqueen skin ticks all the boxes for me. Great job on this one as well, Blizzard.

Varsity D.Va

This is a tweak on the fan-favorite Academy skin and I dig this one too. I don’t feel a massive sense of urgency to get this one, though. I can’t stop using the Cruiser skin anyway.

Arctic Ops Baptiste

This is, unfortunately, the least exciting one of the bunch. It’s a mostly-white version of Bap’s Desert Ops skin, which I actually think is cooler than this one.

Challenge Skins

Along with the six Legendary remixes, you’ll have one more chance to snag a few previous weekly challenge skins. Play 27 games across each weekly period in Arcade, Quick Play and Competitive to unlock them. Wins count for double. Play nine games for a related player icon and 18 for a spray.

The skins you can unlock are:

As I’ve mentioned before, Comic Book Tracer is one of the best-ever skins in Overwatch. Yo sees it the comic book-esque sound effect that plays when you nail a melee attack. It’s the greatest.

Along with all these skins, Overwatch Anniversary Remix: Vol. 3 brings back the brawls from seasonal events: Overwatch Archives Missions (and more difficult challenge missions), Lúcioball, Junkenstein’s Revenge (plus the challenge missions), Freezethaw Elimination, Mei’s Snowball Offensive, Snowball Deathmatch, Yeti Hunter, Capture the Flag and Bounty Hunter. These will be available in the Arcade on a rotating basis.

I’m feeling a little melancholic that this will be the last-ever Overwatch 1 event, so I’ll be playing all the limited-time modes over the next few weeks.
