Shoppers use trolleys to teach lesson to Jaguar driver who took up two spaces at Canberra Westfield

Furious shoppers teach an obnoxious driver a lesson after he parked his Jaguar across two whole spaces

  • A driver got their just desserts after they parked across two spaces at busy mall
  • Shoppers propped up empty trolleys surrounding the black Jaguar on Sunday
  • Social media users flooded social media with laughs and disgust at the parking

Angry shoppers have got their revenge on an inconsiderate driver who parked across two parking spaces at a busy shopping centre.

An observer snapped pictures of the black Jaguar straddled over two parking spots at the Belconnen Westfield in Canberra on Sunday morning.

The shopper shared images of an increasing number of trolleys being used to block the car in over a 30 minute period.

‘I love how petty Canberrans can be,’ she said.

Within 30 minutes, as many as five trolleys were chained up behind the Jaguar.

The post led one social media user to quip: ‘The trolleys have been chained together, surrounding the Jaguar where it will remain for all eternity.’

One commentator suggested tying a trolley to the car’s doors, while others lauded the shoppers for their act of revenge.

Another wag said bad parking wasn’t unusual in the capital – with an entire social media page dedicated to the ‘Parking Fails’ in the city.

Paul Green fondly remembered by Cronulla and Queensland teammate Mat Rogers

A shocked Mat Rogers says his former rugby league teammate, Paul Green, will be remembered as an “incredible competitor” who never took a backward step.

The rugby league world is in mourning following the sudden death of 49-year-old Green, who represented Queensland in State of Origin and was a premiership-winning coach.

Rogers spent the past weekend in Sydney with Green at a Cronulla players reunion, with the pair having been teammates at the Sharks for three seasons since 1995.

They were roommates in the Queensland Super League representative team in 1997, before spending two years together in the Maroons State of Origin side.

Green later enjoyed a successful coaching career, guiding North Queensland to its first NRL premiership in 2015.

Rogers said he and Green played golf and then sat next to each other to watch the Sharks beat St George Illawarra on Saturday night.

“It was great — we played golf on Friday together and spent time at the reunion together,” Rogers said.

“He was telling me about the new boat he’d just bought for the family and I was looking forward to going for a ride.

“I can’t believe he’s gone… it makes me appreciate that time I got to spend with him.”

Rogers said half-back Green — who stood at just 167 centimeters tall — played well above his diminutive size.

Minister apologises for system failing Defense and veterans

Keogh did not give a formal response to the report’s 13 recommendations, but said it was his view the government should get on with implementing them as quickly as possible.

loading

The commissioners said there was “a compelling case” for a permanent body to be established by the time the commission ends in mid-2024 to keep track of implementation progress. They will make a special report next year on what this should look like.

Research has found there are much higher rates of suicide among ex-service personnel than in the general population. But the commission’s report says existing data does not give the full picture and there are gaps.

Census data revealed for the first time there are more than 581,000 Australians who are either veterans or currently serving in the ADF. Approximately 6,000 people leave the ADF each year.

In June, the Department of Veterans Affairs had almost 62,400 claims on hand but was yet to assign 41,800 of them to be examined. The wait time on claims has also grown significantly over the past five years, with the median processing time more than 300 days in some cases.

Keogh said the government had already lifted a staffing cap, meaning the department could transfer temporary contractors to permanent positions, and begun work to recruit the 500 more staff promised during the election.

Commission chair Nick Kaldas said the backlog was unacceptable.

The 13 recommendations include several about sufficiently resourcing DVA to clear the backlog of claims. It also says the laws around veteran compensation and rehabilitation should be simplified by mid-2024.

The report says while change would not be easy, “the difficulties of reform provide no justification to delay any further”.

RSL Australia ambassador Pete Rudland said it was vital for government and ex-service organizations to work together on the “mammoth task” of simplifying the system.

Tasmanian Senator Jacqui Lambie, who gave evidence to the commission last week, warned the government had to be flexible if the department needed more than 500 people.

“When it takes two to four years to get a delegate, that’s before the claim is looked at, we have got massive problems,” she said.

She also urged veterans to speak to the royal commission, which runs for another two years.

“This is our one shot. If you don’t want to come forward for yourself, do it for your mates,” she said.

The commissioners also flagged further work will examine whether the support available to families is sufficient.

loading

Rudland said this was vital to getting better at helping veterans.

“Anything that happens to the soldier happens to the family… we should never separate one from the other,” he said.

Department head Liz Cosson told the commission the department had sought extra funding over the years but the money given to it in the budget hadn’t kept up with the volume of work.

Former veterans minister Andrew Gee, a National MP, also told the commission that despite the limited staffing for claims processing, he was made to cut $430 million from the department’s budget.

Beto O’Rourke calls heckler ‘motherf—er’ for Uvalde laughter

Texas Democratic gubernatorial challenger Beto O’Rourke lost his cool with a man who laughed while the former congressman was talking about the Uvalde school massacre — calling him a “motherf—er.”

O’Rourke, who has been vocal in his condemnation of local and state officials’ response to the tragedy at Robb Elementary School, which claimed the lives of 19 children and two teachers, was in the city of Mineral Wells on Wednesday arguing for stricter gun control measures when he heard a loud chortle coming from an audience member.

O’Rourke whipped around and immediately confronted the inappropriately jovial town hall attendee.

“It may be funny to you, motherf—er, but it’s not funny to me,” O’Rourke barked back.

O'Rourke, a Democrat who is running to unseat Gov. Greg Abbott, was talking about gun control in Mineral Wells, Texas, Wednesday, when he encountered a hackler.

The would-be governor’s potty-mouthed clapback drew loud cheers and applause from the crowd, culminating with a standing ovation.

The unnamed audience member was reportedly standing among a small clique of supporters of Gov. Greg Abbott who were dressed in black and displaying the Republican incumbent’s campaign signs.

Videos of O’Rourke’s salty retort quickly went viral on social media platforms.

After his fiery town hall speech, O’Rourke tweeted: “there was nothing more serious to me than getting justice for the families in Uvalde and stopping this from ever happening again.”

O’Rourke’s response was widely praised by Democrats on Twitter, while a few conservatives slammed him for using foul language.

“@BetoORourke captures the anger and frustration that so many of us feel when people like this heckler and @GovAbbott show no compassion for Uvalde victims and their families,” wrote the Texas state Sen. Roland Gutierrez, a Democrat who represents Uvalde.

Jaime Harrison, chair of the Democratic National Committee, applauded O’Route for “calling it like it is.”

A day after the school shooting on May 24, O’Rourke famously interrupted Abbott and local officials press conference, demanding action on gun control in what was widely perceived as an ill-timed campaign stunt.

“The time to stop the next shooting is right now, and you are doing nothing,” the liberal politician said, before he was escorted out.

The former congressman and 2020 presidential candidate will face off against Abbott at the polls in November.

Disney+ is getting more expensive… unless you want ads

The Disney+ new ad-supported subscription tier will debut in the US on December 8 at a cost of $7.99 a month, the company announced on Wednesday. If that price point looks familiar, it should. That’s what consumers are paying for Disney+ right now without the ads.

Disney+’s price increase comes as the service had a great quarter. The service notched 14.4 million subscribers in the third quarter, exceeding Wall Street expectations. The service currently has 152.1 million subscribers.

The results sent shares up as much as 6.5% in after-hours trading.

As for the company’s overall earnings, Disney (DIS) notched $21.5 billion in revenue for the second quarter, up 26% from last year, and reported a net profit of $1.4 billion, up 53% from a year ago.

Disney noted that it has 221 million subscribers across its multiple streaming offerings. Netflix has 220.6 million.

Disney also revised its long-term forecasts, which was 230 million to 260 million subscribers by the end of fiscal year 2024. On Wednesday, it provided a new guidance of 135 million to 165 million subscribers for its core Disney+ product, and as much as 80 million for its Disney+ Hotstar service in India.

“We had an excellent quarter, with our world-class creative and business teams powering outstanding performance at our domestic theme parks, big increases in live-sports viewership, and significant subscriber growth at our streaming services,” Bob Chapek, Disney CEO, said in the company’s letter to investors on Wednesday.

Why Disney+ is going up in price

Disney+ isn’t the only Disney streaming service that’s going up in price.

Hulu, which is majority owned by Disney, will also get a price bump, up $1 to $7.99 for its ad-supported tier and $2 to $14.99 for Hulu with no ads.

One plan that’s not getting a price hike is the premium Disney Bundle, which ties together the company’s streaming offerings of Disney+ and Hulu with no ads alongside ESPN+. Its cost remains $19.99.

R-rated movies have come to Disney+

This move appears to be Disney’s way of pushing consumers to sign up for its entire slate of services rather than just one. And from a pricing perspective, it’s hard to say no to a bundle that has three services that’s just $9 more per month than Disney’s largest service.

Disney (DIS) is also introducing two new bundle plans: One is Disney+ and Hulu with ads for $9.99; the other is all three services with ads for $12.99.

Tying streaming services together looks to be a new focus of media companies.

Take Warner Bros. Discovery, for example. CNN’s parent company announced last week that it would combine its two streaming services, HBO Max and Discovery+, next summer.

If the first phase of the streaming revolution, which started around 2017, was the “Streaming Wars” the next phase could be considered the “Rumble of the Bundles.”

So why is your streaming pocketbook about to take yet another hit? It’s because building a successful streaming services is really, really expensive.

Services like Disney+ spend millions of dollars, if not billions, creating fresh content that appeals to old and new subscribers as well as for the costly infrastructure to hold it all together. Exhibit A: Disney’s loss in its direct-to-consumer unit was $1.06 billion in the third quarter — roughly four times what it was a year ago.

Disney CEO Bob Chapek gets new three-year contract
Streaming growth has also shown signs of maturity, ie slower growth. Netflix (NFLX)the king of streaming, lost subscribers two quarters in a row this year.

Across the industry, attracting new subscribers has become harder and if subscriptions are slowing down then revenue needs to come from somewhere. Raising prices is one easy way to do that.

And Disney can get away with this type of price increase considering the breadth of their library.

Disney+ is home to some of the most popular brands in all of entertainment, including Marvel Studios, Pixar, Disney Animation and Star Wars. Hulu also has featured films from 20th Century Studios and shows from FX, among other buzzy content.

Kareem Daniel, chairman of Disney media & entertainment distribution, said in a statement Wednesday that the new ad-supported offering as well as the company’s new lineup of streaming plans will “be providing greater consumer choice at a variety of price points to cater to the diverse needs of our viewers and appeal to an even broader audience.”

More than just streaming

Disney’s strong third quarter wasn’t just on the back of Disney+.

The company’s parks, experiences and products unit had a very strong quarter, bringing in revenues of $7.3 billion, up 70% over the same quarter last year.

Disney said that this was the result of “increases in attendance, occupied room nights and cruise ship sailings.”

“Our domestic parks and resorts were open for the entire current quarter, whereas Disneyland Resort was open for 65 days of the prior-year quarter, and Walt Disney World Resort operated at reduced capacity in the prior-year quarter,” the company said.

The new version of Inertial Drift for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S will include a new soundtrack and four new cars.

POV: you’re going for a night drive in your old, beat-up Honda, the sun is setting along the horizon and you pop in a cassette with your favorite ’90s music.

Some vibey Eurobeats, to be exact.

NEW CARS

  • king bison – This car looks like an NFL running back: a bit on thicker side, with a strong hood (almost Camaro-esque), fancy spoiler and piercing flashers
  • terra rai – Picture the rear of a Honda S660; that’s exactly what the Terra Rai reminds us of with a bubbly exterior and almost futuristic look while speeding away
  • Urus – The Urus gives off an exoskeleton-like aesthetic with a light surface and darker outlines around each individual feature of the body
  • XX-82 – Does anyone remember the cartoon Darkwing Duck? This car has that same feel of a disguised superhero with a bit of a devious side and a fascinating spoiler

The line-up of cars, updated content and freshly squeezed soundtrack from Turbo will be accessible to pre-existing PC (via Steam or Epic), Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch users as a new DLC, coming later this year.

Team Selection: Round 22

Adelaide has made two changes for its Round 22 clash against North Melbourne at Adelaide Oval on Saturday.

Defend Tom Doedee returns to the side after spending the past two weeks on the sidelines, as I have addressed niggling injury concerns.

young-forward Riley Thilthorpe has also been named in the team after missing the past two AFL games while recovering from a rolled ankle.

backman Will Hamill comes out of the side under the AFL’s concussion protocols, while forward Elliott Himmelberg you have been omitted.

“Doedee will come into the side refreshed after two weeks out recovering from various ailments,” Crows Head of Football Adam Kelly said.

“In what was a tough decision, especially given our team performance over the past couple of weeks, we have opted for Riley Thilthorpe, who was in good AFL form before being a late withdrawal for the Carlton game due to an ankle injury.”

Kelly also said Hamill would be ruled out for the remainder of the season, given he would not qualify to play in the upcoming SANFL finals.

“We have actually made the decision to rule Will out for next week as well,” Kelly said.

Andrew Forrest’s FMG lodges mining applications in WA’s south

Mining tycoon Andrew Forrest’s Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) has lodged applications to explore vast tracts of WA’s south coast for critical minerals.

The WA billionaire owns FMG, which has lodged almost two dozen applications through the mining regulatory body this month.

The 21 applications are for tenements in an area stretching from Gnowangerup to Ravensthorpe and Lake King.

FMG is a West Australian mining company that focuses on the exploration, development, production and processing of iron ore, with most of its assets located in the state’s Pilbara region.

FMG remained tight-lipped when questioned by the ABC about which minerals it was looking for in the Great Southern, but it has been ramping up its search for lithium.

Lithium is in high demand because it is used in batteries for technology and electric vehicles.

The commodity is valuable because of its high charge and low atomic mass.

Other minerals in Ravensthorpe include nickel and cobalt.

Battery minerals in high demand

MineLife senior resource analyst Gavin Wendt said FMG would be looking for battery materials and other metals that could go into renewable energy.

“Fortescue is increasingly positioning itself as a renewable energy company, and it’s looking towards these future-facing commodities as the world moves towards renewable energy,” he said.

“There’s a real growth opportunity out there for resource companies.

“We’re starting to see the world’s major miners … realize that they need to get their hands on these strategic materials because of the increase in demand that’s going to come through over the ensuing decades.”

Biden plans to go on offense against GOP’s inflation barrage

President Biden plans to go on offense against Republicans’ drumbeat about rising prices by arguing the GOP has repeatedly sided with special interests — “pushing an extreme MAGA agenda that costs families,” according to a White House memo shared first with Axios.

Why it matters: The GOP plans to try to make November’s midterms a “gas and groceries” election — all about inflation. Biden can’t undo the pain families have felt as everyday prices skyrocketed. So this is his inflation jujitsu from him — using Republicans ‘force against them.

Zoom out: Biden is expected to sign Democrats’ climate-health-tax bill, the Inflation Reduction Act, soon after House passage, expected late this week. Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and the cabinet then will fan out across the country with this message.

  • The White House believes the bill puts Democrats in a position of strength heading into Labor Day.

The memo — from White House communications director Kate Bedingfield and senior adviser Anita Dunn — argues that Biden’s wins have dealt blows to a parade of entrenched interests.

  • Among the targets: the pharmaceutical industry, big corporations, the gun lobby and oil and gas companies.
  • “This is the choice before the American people,” the memo concludes. “President Biden and Congressional Democrats taking on special interests for you and your family. Or Congressional Republicans’ extreme, MAGA agenda that serves the wealthiest, corporations and themselves.”

Between the lines: The special-interest messaging attempts to counter the narrative that Democrats are becoming the party of the economic elite.

  • It’s a message that Democrats running in swing states — including Pennsylvania, Ohio and North Carolina — are already embracing, in an effort to win back rural and working-class votes Dems lost in 2020.

Both parties are now fighting for the working-class mantel.

  • House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy argues: “President Biden and House Democrats’ radical policies have caused inflation to soar to a 40-year high. They’ve pushed out-of-touch policies that have caused energy prices to rise and real wages to go down.”
