The young Hawk who could be a top 25 player in the AFL in 12 months

Garry Lyon believes Hawthorn ruckman Ned Reeves is a chance to explode in 2023.

Reeves, 23, has had a promising year in the brown and gold, consolidating his position in the senior side as he looks set to claim the number one ruck title at the Hawks for many years to come.

Asked who he thinks could leap into the top 25 players in the competition next year, Lyon listed Reeves, tipping him to become one of the best ruckmen in the league next year.

“I think by the end of next year, Ned Reeves is going to be in that argument,” Lyon told SEN Breakfast.

“I think this bloke’s upside is enormous for the Hawks.

“They’ve put him away, he’s gone in for shoulder surgery, I think by the end of next year we’ll be talking about him as the next big coming ruckman in the competition.

“I love what he’s been able to do on occasions and I think he’s got huge upside.”

Agreeing with Lyon’s sentiments, Tim Watson believes if Reeves is to make that leap, he’ll need to work on his agility in the upcoming pre-season.

“I think you’re right, but I tell you what I would do, I’d put him in some spikes over the summer and I would be working on his agility and his movement,” Watson added.

“He’s a big kid and is probably still growing into his body but I think he needs to work in that area.”

Reeves will miss the final three games of the 2022 season after having undergone surgery on his shoulder this week.

Paddington’s Indian Home Diner allowed to trade until 3am after council reverses decision

A cult favorite Sydney diner has been “saved” after Woollahra Council reversed course and decided late-night Indian kebabs were in the public interest after all, agreeing to let the restaurant trade until 3am on weekends.

The Indian Home Diner on Oxford Street, Paddington, has become a Sydney institution with a loyal following among eastern suburbs partygoers en route home from the city. The “#5” garlic cheese is the go-to favorite for mopping up booze.

The beloved Indian kebab store has won its battle to stay open past midnight, after attracting some high-profile supporters.

The shop had been dishing out carby, butter-chicken filled naan rolls until the early hours for years, apparently in breach of its development consent. Following a complaint, the council cracked down earlier this year, enforcing a midnight closure.

Later, the council rejected the diner’s first application to extend its trading hours to 3am on Friday and Saturday nights, citing possible noise concerns and declaring it was “not in the public interest” for the diner to open until 3am.

Such was the restaurant’s cultural cachet that a popular community Instagram page, Bondi Lines, took up the fight, and was soon joined by the then candidates for the federal seat of Wentworth, Dave Sharma and Allegra Spender. Spender, now the MP, called the diner a “national treasure.”

The restaurant requested a formal review and at a meeting on Tuesday night, Woollahra Council relented and approved the diner to trade until 3am on Friday and Saturday nights. Planning officers said the proposal was in the public interest and would not have any adverse social impacts.

The popular community Instagram page Bondi Lines took up the cause to “save” the diner from the new rules.

Liberal councillor Sean Carmichael, who in May tabled a petition with more than 4000 signatures supporting the diner, said it was a magnificent result and “a well-loved slice of Oxford Street has, for a change, been saved”.

But he said the case was a lightning rod for “widespread public anger” about the decline of Oxford Street and Sydney nightlife due to excessive regulation.

Jan. 6 Text Messages From Defense Department, Army Officials ‘Wiped’

  • A watchdog group filed a FOIA request for Jan. 6 messages between top Pentagon and Army officials.
  • But the Defense Department and Army claimed all messages were deleted after employees left the agencies.
  • Some messages belonged to officials directly involved with the DoD’s response to the Capitol attack.

Text messages between several top officials in the Department of Defense and the Army were deleted shortly after they left the Trump administration, leaving a significant hole in correspondence that may have occurred on the day of the Capitol attack.

American Oversight, a DC-based watchdog group, had sought all communications related to the Capitol riot from several senior members of the Trump administration, including the former Acting Secretary of Defense Christopher Miller, former Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy, and former Acting Secretary of Defense Kash Patel.

The watchdog group filed a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit six days after the January 6, 2021, riot at the Capitol.

“The lawsuit seeks the release of communications those officials had with former President Trump, former Vice President Pence, former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, or anyone communicating on their behalf on Jan. 6,” the watchdog group wrote in a press release .

In March of this year, the Defense Department and the Army responded that any messages from former employees of their agencies could not be reproduced because the phones were “wiped” after they left, according to court filings.

“DoD and Army conveyed to plaintiff that when an employee separates from DoD or Army he or she turns in the government-issued phone, and the phone is wiped,” the court document stated. “For those custodians no longer with the agency, the text messages were not preserved and therefore could not be searched, although it is possible that particular text messages could have been saved into other records systems such as email.”

The Army did not immediately respond to a request for comment. An officer for the Defense Department said that the agency does not comment on ongoing litigation.

Some of the messages American Oversight is seeking belong to top officials who are seen as key witnesses to the Pentagon’s response to the January 6 attack.

Miller, who was deposed by investigators of the riot, previously said he was “never given any direction or order or knew of any plans” to deploy 10,000 National Guard troops — a claim Meadows once made to Fox News host Sean Hannity.

McCarthy has also been of interest for the House select committee investigating the Capitol riot. A senior Army official once wrote in a memo that the former Army secretary was “incommunicado or unreachable for most of the afternoon” on the day of the attack, according to Politico.

Retrieving communications from key Trump officials and players throughout January 6, 2021, has lately become a cumbersome task, faced with roadblock after roadblock.

When the January 6 House panel requested messages between Secret Service agents, Joseph Cuffari, who served as inspector general of the Department of Homeland Security, claimed that any correspondence was deleted as part of a pre-planned “system migration” process.

Members of the January 6 committee asked Cuffari on Tuesday to “step aside” from any investigation into the Secret Service after reports revealed that Cuffari’s office may have known about the deleted text messages earlier than was previously revealed.

Aquaman star Jason Momoa poses as flight attendant, hands out water to surprised Hawaiian Airlines passengers

If acting doesn’t work out for Aquaman actor Jason Momoa, he could pick up a career as a jet-setting flight attendant.

Lucky passengers on a Hawaiian Airlines flight were witnesses to Momoa’s first day on the job as cabin crew as he handed out bottles of his water, called Mananalu, from a trolly.

A woman named Kylee Yoshikawa, who goes by the username @livinglikekylee on TikTok, posted the clip which has now been viewed by 3.5 million people on the platform.

“My aunty sent me this vid, i just thought i’d share,” she captioned the video which had an instrumental version of Disney’s Under the Sea — very fitting — playing over the footage.

The 43-year-old even dressed the part in a gray suit complete with a pink flower tucked behind his ear.

He has since shared a behind-the-scenes clip on Instagram, introducing himself to passengers as the “water master” on board the flight.

“Mahalo @hawaiianairlines for allowing me and my team to capture this special moment,” he wrote.

“It’s a dream come true. My idea to create @Mananalu.water came to me while on a flight.

“I’m grateful for your support and it’s an honor to have Hawaiian Airlines be the first airline to partner with Mananalu. We’re on a mission to end single-use plastic. Drink one, remove one – For every bottle of Mananalu sold, we remove one plastic bottle from the ocean. We have removed 3 MILLION plastic bottles from the ocean this year. Don’t stop making waves to save our beautiful planet. hello j”

Cronulla Sharks face battle to play semi final at Shark Park

The Sharks may be locked out of their traditional home ground during the NRL finals, with concerns over the venue’s facilities.

It seems that Cronulla will finish in the top four, and with the minor premiership all-but out of reach, they would have to finish second on the table in order to host a match at Shark Park.

NRL guidelines require teams that are hosting finals in the second and third weeks to play at a major venue in their city – meaning Cronulla would be shunted to Moore Park in the event that they don’t get a chance to host a finals match until either of those weekends.

But if they were to finish second, they would be entitled to play at Shark Park in week one – should the facilities meet NRL standards.

At the moment, that remains up in the air.

“If we win a home-ground advantage, we would want to play at home,” Sharks chief executive Dino Mezzatesta told AAP.

“That’s our starting point and given we are a fair bit out we will continue to have dialogue with the NRL.

“We have had no problem selling out our games regardless of the timeslot.”

Due to renovations in the Shire, capacity for recent games has been capped at roughly 11,500 people. Last weekend’s thriller against the Rabbitohs was sold out several days in advance, with an official attendance of 11,492 announced.

For context, in 2008 when the venue last hosted a finals match, the crowd was 18,252.

The ongoing renovations at the stadium have been a hot topic in recent days, with ARLC boss Peter V’landys and NSW premier Dominic Perrottet trading barbs about funding allocated to Shark Park, along with Brookvale and Leichhardt ovals.

NRL head of football Graham Annesley said that the governing body hadn’t yet “reached any conclusion that we would relocate the Sharks should they qualify for a home semi-final”.

Corruption watchdog investigates Queensland Building and Construction Commission as complaints almost double

The state’s corruption watchdog has revealed the number of complaints about the Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) or its board has almost doubled in the past year, and one investigation has been launched.

Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC) chair Bruce Barbour outlined the figures while appearing at a budget estimates hearing at Queensland Parliament on Wednesday.

The details and nature of the complaints are not known.

“It would be inappropriate for me to discuss any specific matters that are currently, or may be currently, before the commission,” Mr Barbour told the committee.

“What I can indicate is that in the past year we’ve received 30 matters raising complaints regarding the QBCC and/or the board.

“This was an increase from 16 in the previous year.”

The session heard the majority of the complaints came from the QBCC, another four were made by members of the public, and two were “self-generated” by the CCC.

Of those 30 complaints, one matter is currently under investigation by the corruption watchdog, Mr Barbour said.

“[Another] nine are currently subject to reviews and monitoring by the CCC, 11 were referred back to the QBCC, and eight were deemed to require no further action,” he said.

“Of the nine matters that were selected for monitoring, one has resulted in the dismissal of the subject officer.

“One matter was finalized managerially, two matters were not substantiated, and five matters are ongoing.”

‘An astonishing figure’

Shadow Public Works Minister Tim Mander called the tally of complaints “an astonishing figure.”

“The CCC mentioned this morning that somebody is under investigation. Minister De Brenni needs to ensure that person is stood down while the process takes place,” he said.

“He also needs to call a royal commission – nothing short of a royal commission will allow whistleblowers to speak freely.”

At a media conference, Public Works Minister Mick De Brenni said it was the first time he had heard of the numbers of complaints.

“And of course, when you make a complaint those matters are kept confidential, they’re certainly not briefed to me,” he said.

A Battlefield From 1777 Yields a Dozen Mercenaries’ Remains

Archaeologists working at Red Bank Battlefield, a site along the Delaware River south of Philadelphia, have uncovered the remains of 13 Hessian mercenaries who were killed during a bloody Revolutionary War battle.

The remains were found in a former trench that was part of the defenses of Fort Mercer, where 500 American patriots were stationed to prevent British ships from supplying troops in the city. On Oct. 22, 1777, a contingent of 2,000 Hessian soldiers fighting for the British set out to overwhelm the small force, but the day ended in a resounding defeat, with 377 Hessians killed but only 14 American casualties.

“Finding bone, finding Hessians was not on my radar,” said Jennifer Janofsky, a historian at Rowan University in Glassboro, NJ, and the director of Red Bank Battlefield Park. “We have documentation from that period showing where mass graves are. This was not on the map.”

Genetic studies are being conducted on the remains, which include isolated body parts. The hope is to eventually connect these to the names of soldiers known to have been killed in the battle and cast a finer light on life and death during the Revolutionary War.

Some of the bones display wounds from musket balls and from grapeshot that would have been fired from cannons inside the fort or from ships in the river. “These guys were being hit by all kinds of things,” said Wade Catts, principal archaeologist for South River Heritage Consulting in Newark, Del., who led the scientific fieldwork. “What a horrible place this would have been.”

Mr. Catts said he believed that the Hessian remains belonged to members of the Regiment von Mirbach, which is known to have attacked the center of Fort Mercer’s defenses. He was excited by an additional discovery: a British gold coin, worth about one month’s salary for the average soldier, that may have belonged to Lieutenant Colonel Ernst Rudolf von Schieck, who commanded the Hessian regiment and died in the fighting.

“This is really an opportunity to expand our knowledge of the Hessian forces — about their material culture, about the men themselves,” Mr. Catts said.

The American soldiers defending the fort were from the First and Second Rhode Island Regiments, the Sixth Virginia Regiment and included a small number of New Jersey militiamen. The Rhode Island regiments were among the nation’s first integrated military units. Ten to 15 percent of the force was made up of Black soldiers and members of the Narragansett Indian Tribe. The fort was further supported by 13 ships of the Pennsylvania Navy, with cannons that fired chain and bar shot — typically used to damage a ship’s sails — at the Hessian attackers.

For Dr. Janofsky, the human remains add poignancy to the story of the battle. Among the dead was a man between the ages of 17 and 19, the same age as many of her history students. “Very few of us have seen the violence of the battlefield, and it’s what we’ve been looking at for the past months,” she said. “I feel like we are charged with helping our visitors understand that moment.”

TV presenter Erin Molan is spotted with mystery man after split from husband

TV presenter Erin Molan has been spotted with a mystery man at an event in Canberra.

Todd Selby was spotted alongside Ms Molan at a book launch for her father Jim Molan at Parliament House in Canberra on Wednesday before the pair stopped to pose for a photo together.

Newly welcomed onto Sky News with her show ‘Erin’, the mum-of-one told media earlier this year that she was ready to share more about herself and her private life.

Ms Molan confirmed she had met a special someone in May after revealing she was back on the dating scene earlier this year following her shock break-up with finance Sean Ogilvy in September 2021.

The 39-year-old told the Hughesy, Ed and Erin radio show that happy with her new man, but that dating with a kid was “complex.”

The pair were pictured together as Mr Molan launched his new book Danger on our Doorstep in Parliament House.

“It’s still early-ish days. It’s really nice actually. I think anyone who’s been in a long-term relationship, when that ends – particularly if you’ve got kids – you kind of go through this stage where you don’t know if you’ll ever meet anyone again,” she said.

The presenter also revealed the unexpected way she met her partner, saying it seemed like ‘fate’.

“I was driving into the car park, he was driving out. That’s the first time we saw each other but we didn’t meet until a couple of months after that,” she said.

“I’m not a believer in fate… but the timing of it was pretty incredible. We locked eyes and I felt something.”

Erin’s co-host Hughesy described the mystery man as looking “like he might have played rugby league.”

“He’s tall and strong and fit. He’s handsome and he’s got a very deep voice. He’s got a great sense of humour,” he said, adding that the pair look really happy together”.

The former sports reporter who has had her fair share of controversies.

In 2020, Ms Molan put a spotlight on the harms of cyber bullying, tearing up on 60 Minutes as she recounted the horrifying abuse she experienced at the hands of online trolls.
